Old Legs Zanzibar Tour 2023

Zanzibar Old Legs Tour

Welcome to the 2023 Old Legs Zanzibar Tour.

My name is Eric de Jong a.k.a. Chicken Legs and I’m part of something called the Old Legs Tour. Every year we ride our bikes to somewhere ridiculously far away, on roads less travelled, looking to have fun, to do good and to do epic. We’re called Old Legs because it sounds more polite than bloody ancient, and because we ride to raise money and awareness for Zimbabwe’s pensioners. We’ve ridden to Cape Town and Kilimanjaro, to Uganda and the Skeleton Coast, and from Bulawayo to Bulawayo, braving elephants, lions and tsetse flies, and the Zambezi Escarpment more than once. This year, we’re heading to the tropical island of Zanzibar. But I can hear you ask where exactly is the epic in lolling about on a beach under palm trees, sipping long and lazy pink cocktails with little umbrellas? Well, first we have to get to Zanzibar on our bikes, and that involves 2800 kilometers of tough, hard riding, climbing massively harsh mountains and through some of Africa’s wildest bush. On May 27 and armed with only a Portuguese-English phrasebook, a smattering of Swahili plus a mountain of other kit, our Old Legs peloton of 10, plus support crew of 6, will leave Harare headed in the general direction of Mozambique and beyond. Because I’ve been involved in route plotting and navigation, it could get interesting. NB We’ve taken the precaution of packing 2 Frenchmen in our peloton, lest we bumble into Francophone Africa.

Zanzibar Ride Route

The plan is to cross the Zambezi River at Tete, then we turn right towards Malawi, turn left before the Zomba plateau, then down to Lake Malawi for our first rest day and a sneak preview of the pink cocktails complete with umbrellas, fingers crossed. Then down to Mangochi, east back into Mozambique, north over some very tall mountains around a town called Lichinga, back down to the Lake for another rest day, more pink cocktails, umbrellas, etcetera, before plunging back off the beaten track into the vast unknown that is the Niassa Province. NB The vast unknown is a geographical term that happens often when I’m navigating. Google reliably informs me that the Niassa Province is home to some even taller mountains, elephants, buffalos and tsetse flies, and not much else apparently, apart from 12000 sable, 350 wild dogs, and assorted lions, etcetera, etcetera. To give you an idea of the vastness of the Niassa Reserve that we will ride alongside, it is the same size as Wales or Denmark, or twice the size of the Kruger National Park. We’ll then cross the Rovuma River into Tanzania, ride east for plus minus 600 kilometers, plus minus being another of my oft used geographical phrases, briefly passing through the bottom of the iconic Selous Game Reserve, unless of course we hit sand, whence upon briefly will take forever. Then on to the Indian Ocean, apparently a large expanse of open water in front of us, and we can’t miss it. NB If we hit the Atlantic Ocean, we’ll know that we have gone horribly wrong somewhere and we’ll blame the Frenchmen. When we hit the ocean, we’ll turn left a.k.a. north to follow the Swahili Coast for 300 kilometers to Dar es Salam, lots of big, tall buildings on our left and in front. Thankfully, we remain fluent in Swahili from our Kilimanjaro Tour 4 years ago, provided the conversation doesn’t stray much beyond slow, slow, and hallo. Another rest day in Dar with more cocktails and pink umbrellas, plus an introduction to our kayaks. And then our penultimate leg, 40 kilometers in the kayaks across the ocean. NB I am reliably informed that I will not be able to see land for long stretches. Also NB, I swim like a brick and am petrified of sharks. When and if we land on Zanzibar, we get back on the bikes to pedal the length of the island to our finish line on Nungwi beach, Zanzibar’s most northerly point. And then we loll about under palm trees, enjoying pink cocktails with little umbrellas. And man, are they going to taste good. We are riding to Zanzibar to raise money and awareness for Zimbabwe’s pensioners. After 30 years of ruinous economic policies and 2 bouts of hyperinflation, the generation that built our country, the doctors and the engineers, the teachers and the farmers, especially the poor farmers, have been with nothing, no pensions, no savings, no nothing, leaving them entirely dependent upon the charity they are too proud to ask for. Alas. Please help us help them by following the donate prompts on www.oldlegstour.com. And please be invited to join us on our adventures up through Africa, but be warned, we ride slow like paint dries, and we paddle even slower. The Old Legs Zanzibar Team a.k.a. Al Watermeyer, Zack Patinois, Pete Brodie, Rafe Wetzlar, Angus and Rowena Melrose, Clem Henon, Cedric Breda, Kim Parker, Eric and Jenny de Jong, Hanny Swart, Brian Goodman, Vicky Bowen, Gary de Jong and George Lockhart.

Till Lindemann of Rammstein announces 1st U.S. solo tour. Get tickets

Till Lindemann is leaving Rammstein behind in 2024.

Starting in September, the bombastic frontman will embark on his first solo U.S. tour with special guests Twin Temple and Aesthetic Perfection in support of his 2023 solo album “Zunge.”

Midway through the fall run, the 61-year-old drops into New York’s The Rooftop at Pier 17 on Tuesday, Oct. 1.

While this will be Lindemann’s first solo stateside jaunt, it won’t be the first time he’s performed without Rammstein.

Most recently, he wrapped an international 2023-24 solo tour in Mexico, according to Set List FM . On that run, he regularly performed 19 songs — including two encores — per show.

While we can’t guarantee what he’ll bring to the stage on his forthcoming North American tour, we do know the best way to find out is live.

Ccan’t wait to see the lively Lindemann?

You’re in luck. Tickets can be snagged for all of his 2024 U.S. and Canada concerts and festival appearances as soon as today.

Although inventory isn’t available on Ticketmaster until Friday, April 26, fans who want to ensure they have tickets ahead of time can purchase on sites like Vivid Seats before tickets are officially on sale.

Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event.

A complete calendar including all tour dates, venues and links to buy tickets can be found below.

This September and October, Lindemann will lend his talents to a pair of heavy multi-day musical extravaganzas.

For a closer look, here are the dates, venues and fellow headliners at both festivals.

As noted above, Lindemann wrapped his 2023-24 in Mexico on Jan. 4.

Here’s what he performed that night, courtesy of Set List FM .

01.) “Zunge”

02.) “Schweiss”

04.) “Altes Fleisch”

05.) “Allesfresser”

06.) “Golden Shower”

07.) “Tanzlehrerin”

08.) “Ich weiß es nicht”

09.) “Sport frei”

10.) “Blut”

11.) “Praise Abort”

12.) “Platz Eins”

13.) “Fish On”

14.) “Gummi”

15.) “Steh auf”

16.) “Knebel”

17.) “Ich hasse Kinder”

18.) “Skills in Pills”

19.) “Entre dos tierras” (Héroes del Silencio cover)

On Nov. 3, 2023, Lindemann dropped his solo album “Zunge.”

Comprised of 11 tracks, the heavy rocker stretches his musical muscles and alternates between intimate quiet and chaotic, epic loud — the sound Rammstein is known for — with ease.

Highlights include the quirky “Sports Frei,” thumping “Altes Fleisch” and warbly anthem “Du hast kein Herz.”

Personally, we were most taken with the Ennio Morricone-esque “Tanzlehrerin” with its guitar licks, yearning vocals and gifted yet pained backing singer giving her all behind Lindemann.

Don’t sleep on the shockingly fun album closer “Selbst verliebt,” either. It’s an unexpected pop delicacy.

Want to hear for yourself?

You can listen to “Zunge” in its entirety here .

On Christmas 2023, Lindemann followed up the album release with the whirly, tongue trilling single “Entre dos tierras” en español.

It has our stamp of approval as well; the song is quite a bit of fun.

At all shows, Lindemann will be joined by a pair of opening acts.

To make sure you’re acquainted with their sounds, you can find each band’s most-streamed song on Spotify below.

Twin Temple: “Lucifer, My Love”

Aesthetic Perfection: “Spit It Out”

Lindemann was accused of sexual assault by a female fan last June over social media. She alleged he drugged her at a pre-show Rammstein VIP party in Lithuania and later approached her fox sex during intermission.

This led to backlash against Rammstein’s “VIP Experience;” fans believed Lindemann was using the ticket tier to bed fans.

After looking into the case, German prosectors dropped the case due to lack of evidence and testimony.

“The rapid termination of investigative proceedings by the Berlin state prosecutor’s office shows that there is insufficient evidence that our client allegedly committed sexual offen(s)es,” Lindemann’s lawyers said.

Rammstein drummer claimed Lindemann “has distanced himself from us in recent years and created his own bubble” and “things seem to have happened that, although legally ok, I personally don’t think are ok.”

If Lindemann’s brief jaunt isn’t coming to a venue near you, we have just the solution.

Here are five metal acts that might be headed to your city these next few months.

•  Limp Bizkit

Miles Russell, 15, receives sponsor exemption into Butterfield Bermuda Championship

Exemption awarded as reigning ajga boys junior player of the year.

Change Text Size

Miles Russell, 15, made waves last week on the Korn Ferry Tour, earning the right to play again this week. He'll also compete on the PGA TOUR this fall.

Russell will play the Butterfield Bermuda Championship in November on a sponsor exemption, the American Junior Golf Association announced Monday in a release. This marks the first tournament exemption in a partnership where the reigning AJGA Rolex Junior Player of the Year will receive an exemption into the PGA TOUR event at Port Royal Golf Course.

Miles Russell, 15, discusses final-round 66 at LECOM Suncoast Classic

Last year, Russell became the youngest AJGA Boys Junior Player of the Year, surpassing Tiger Woods’ long-standing record. He joined 2009 AJGA Player of the Year Jordan Spieth and 2013 AJGA Player of the Year Scottie Scheffler in finishing top 25 in their TOUR-sanctioned debut; Spieth finished T16 at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson in 2010, while Scheffler finished T22 at the same event in 2014.

This year’s Butterfield Bermuda Championship, part of the FedExCup Fall, is slated for Nov. 14-17 at Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton, Bermuda.

“I am honored to be receiving an exemption into the 2024 Butterfield Bermuda Championship,” Russell said in the AJGA release. “I have dreamt of playing on the PGA TOUR my entire life and to have that dream coming to fruition later this year is a feeling that I cannot describe. I am grateful to the tournament and the AJGA for their partnership that is allowing me this incredible opportunity.”

Russell’s 2023 season included back-to-back victories at TaylorMade TP5 Junior All-Star and Moon Golf Junior All-Star, in addition to a seven-shot win at the Junior PGA Championship and a three-shot win at the Junior PLAYERS Championship at TPC Sawgrass. The native of Jacksonville Beach, Florida, is currently a high school freshman, attending online school.

He'll make his second Korn Ferry Tour start this week in Texas, knowing he’ll have a PGA TOUR start later this year as well.

“The AJGA is excited to offer a PGA TOUR exemption to our Rolex Player of the Year,” said Patrick Cansfield, AJGA director, Development, in the release. “We are proud to partner with the PGA TOUR and Butterfield Bermuda Championship to help our juniors grow on and off the golf course.”

Miles Russell, 15, makes history again, ties for 20th on Korn Ferry

Two days after he became the youngest player ever to make the cut on the Korn Ferry Tour, Miles Russell notched another pretty cool achievement for a 15-year-old.

He finished tied for 20th in the event.

Russell, the reigning American Junior Golf Association Player of the Year, closed with a 5-under 66 on Sunday at the Lecom Suncoast Classic in Lakewood Ranch, Florida, finishing 6 shots behind winner Tim Widing . He became the youngest player since at least 1983 to finish in the top 25 in a Korn Ferry Tour or PGA Tour event.

An amateur playing on a sponsor's exemption, Russell won't pocket any money for the finish. But he did qualify for next week's Korn Ferry event, the Veritex Bank Championship in Texas, as a result of finishing in the top 25.

What a week for Miles Russell 👏 pic.twitter.com/eWqa8CmQjD — Korn Ferry Tour (@KornFerryTour) April 21, 2024

"It was an awesome week," he said. "It was a blast."

Russell was outside the top 25 entering Sunday, but he surged 28 spots up the leaderboard thanks to a final round that included seven birdies in a 10-hole stretch.

"You're always nervous," he said of the final round. "So definitely the start of the round [I had nerves], but they kind of relaxed as we got kind of settled in and maybe a little bit more toward the end. But it was good.

"I just kind of try to go with the flow and take it as it comes to me and just try and stay cool."

The closing 66 matched his low round of the event; he posted the same score Friday to make history on the PGA Tour's developmental circuit. At 15 years, 5 months and 17 days, he became the youngest ever to make the cut; Gipper Finau , the younger brother of PGA Tour star Tony Finau , had the previous record, doing so at the 2006 Utah Championship, when he was 16 years, 20 days.

Big achievements on the golf course, though, are nothing new for Russell.

In 2023, the left-hander from Florida won the Junior PGA Championship by 7 shots and became the youngest winner of the Junior Players Championship. He won the AJGA Player of the Year award at a younger age than Tiger Woods .

Last month, he lost out in a playoff in a Monday qualifier for the PGA Tour's Puerto Rico Open.

Product recalls, warnings increased in 2023, report finds

There were 323 product recalls for household items and appliances in 2023.

(InvestigateTV) — 2023 had the highest number of household product recalls in seven years , according to a new study by the U.S. Public Interest Research Group (PIRG).

“We’re not nearly as safe as what we think we should be, and what we deserve to be, frankly,” Teresa Murray with PIRG said.

PIRG analyzed 323 product recall announcements from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and found a more than 10% increase in the amount of recall notifications from 2022 to 2023.

The types of products recalled the most were children’s sleepwear, small vehicles like ATVs and golf carts, toys, infant sleep products, furniture, and small kitchen appliances.

PIRG’S analysis also found that dangerous products were connected to more than 550 injuries, ranging from minor cuts and burns to even paralysis and permanent brain injuries.

15 people died in connection with products before they were recalled.

“Those people aren’t coming back,” Murray said. “And the thing that really gets me is that in a lot of these cases with the recalls, the process has gone on for months or years. Like, some of the initial complaints were filed YEARS ago, and it takes so stinkin’ long to get a product recalled and to get the word out to the public. It’s just tragic.”

Murray said the CPSC doesn’t have mandatory recall authority without going through years of legal battles, making it an obstacle to instantly put a product on the recall list.

Murray urged people to go to the CPSC’s website to search recalls and look at what’s listed.

“They generally post recalls every Thursday, and it’s usually about half a dozen recalls a week,” Murray said. “Just bookmark it. Look at it every Thursday or Friday, or the weekend and see if anything has been recalled is something that you own!”

She also encouraged people to visit saferproducts.gov .

“There it’s really interesting because that includes complaints about products that have not been recalled, but names names. And that’s one of the ways the CPSC figures out what kinds of products need to be investigated,” Murray explained. “So you and I, we can go on there and see, ‘hmmm. Maybe I don’t want to buy that thing for my child.’”

She encouraged people to do their homework and research items before purchase.

Consumers who have experienced an issue with a product are encouraged to file a complaint so others can be warned about defective product.
