What To Consider When Choosing The Best Photoshoot Locations In New Orleans

👉 Time of day and lighting. Look at where the sun is rising and setting from, and make sure the light is facing towards your subject to avoid shadows.

👉 Composition and character. You’re in New Orleans, so don’t be afraid to get those crazy angles, like diagonal shots or shots from low angles – just make sure the photo tells a story and has a main point of focus!

👉 Plan ahead when needed. If you know there might be crowds, going early is always the best option! You can also plan what you’re wearing to match the background or theme of what you’re photographing – for instance, if you’re doing a ghost tour, wear a spooky costume or a white dress!

In addition, New Orleans is one of the most beautiful places to take photos! 📸 Whether you’re coming for the beignets, bayou, Mardi Gras, Creole cuisine, distinctive architecture, jazz music, or something else entirely, New Orleans is a dream destination. 🎷

We can’t talk about New Orleans without at least mentioning … Mardi Gras! 🥳 The annual Mardi Gras celebration includes lively parades that originate in the Garden District of Uptown New Orleans along St. Charles Avenue …, but New Orleans is more than just beads and nightlife. New Orleans is filled with culture, beauty, and a rich and diverse history. Whether you’re strolling, cycling, or riding a streetcar, New Orleans is compact and accessible, making it awesome for visitors to see all the city has to offer without too tremendous or arduous an effort.

Royal Street in the French Quarter is one of New Orleans original streets, dating back to the early 18th century! Today Royal Street is one of our favourite Instagrammable spots; it’s a shopper’s paradise, home to antique stores and boutiques, art galleries, and delicious dining options, all just a block from Bourbon Street! 🤳 Royal Street is also a pretty residential stretch, with stunning homes and historical landmarks that aren’t just eye candy for tourists.

Swamp Landscape Photo Workshop

Ideal for any nature lover, this swamp and wildlife tour doubles as a Louisiana swamp photography workshop. Your guide, an experienced nature photographer, helps you capture some of the most beautiful landscapes and enticing wildlife in the region.

Most photography workshops are multi-day experiences that are costly and locked into set dates years in advance. Our workshops are set up for private groups and can be booked on a daily basis. We have the flexibility to run sunrise and sunset trips all year long. If you are a nature photographer in New Orleans and want to get out into the swamps but don’t want to be locked into a set workshop schedule, this is the trip for you.

The cypress swamps of Louisiana are beautifully scenic but can be difficult to photograph by car or on foot. You need a boat to access most of the photogenic areas and an experienced guide to get you there. We use high-quality kayaks and canoes to get you into some of the most backwater areas of the swamp that most boats cannot access. We offer transportation to and from your hotel in the city if needed. We can run trips for either sunrise or sunset.

Our Louisiana swamp photography tours run for 3-4 hours in the field and another 1 hour of transportation and load-out before and after the session. Depending on the conditions, we also have full outboard swamp boats available. This allows us to shoot in rainy or windy conditions. If you have mobility issues or cannot paddle and you think a boat is better suited for you, talk with us before your trip and we can potentially schedule this for an additional captain fee.

Our guides can help with camera settings and composition if needed, but it is not a focal point of the trip. Our main goal is to get you into the most scenic areas and accommodate you as you set up the shots you are after. If you have concepts for different images, it is best to reach out to us before your trip to discuss your ideas. Different times of the year allow for accessing different areas and can determine how different shots can be taken.

We cannot provide you with photo gear. you must bring your own. If you have any additional questions, feel free to email or call to discuss your trip. We also offer a 3-day photo excursion to the virgin cypress forests of the Atchafalaya Basin in the fall. Where do I leave my vehicle when I drive myself? If you drive yourself to the tour location you can leave your car at our store at 118 Gary Road, Laplace, LA. You can also follow us to our launch location down the road if you prefer.

What should I wear/bring on the tour? We recommend that everyone wear clothes that they don’t mind getting a little wet. Pants and shirts that are quick-drying help to make your experience more enjoyable. Hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen are recommended to protect you from the sun. We have drinks, snacks, dry bags, and other items available for purchase at our store on 118 Gary Road, Laplace, LA where we will be meeting for the tour.

What about bugs? Generally, mosquitos, flies, and other biting bugs are not very bad while on the water. If you have your own bug spray or would like to buy some to bring with you that is perfectly fine.

How far away are your tours/where are directions? If you will be driving yourself to the tour we provide you with turn-by-turn directions to our meeting locations. Once you book your tours you will receive an email receipt where detailed directions to tour locations will be included. All of our tours are a 30 – 40 min drive from downtown New Orleans. Our store and meeting location is at 118 Gary Road, Laplace, LA.

Can I drink alcoholic beverages on the tour? For insurance purposes, we are not allowed to start a tour with someone who appears to be intoxicated.

What if it rains? Our tours still operate in the rain as long as our guests’ safety is not compromised by inclement weather e.g. weather considered hazardous to tour member’s safety. This includes lighting storms, unsafe water conditions, wildfires, etc. A little rain in the swamp can actually be quite refreshing after a long paddle.

What time will I be picked up? 9:00 AM is the pickup time for our 10:15 AM tour.

11:45 AM is the pickup time for our 1:00 PM tour.

Is kayaking with alligators safe? The short answer is yes! Alligators are a much calmer version than their cousins the crocodile. Generally, alligators have a docile nature. Because they are cold-blooded they spend most of the day either cooling off in the water or sunbathing on the bank. Most of their feeding and activity is done at night. Many boat tours in New Orleans feed alligators to ensure guests will be able to see them every day. When alligators are not fed by humans they have a natural fear of humans, as we have hunted them for centuries. It is illegal to feed alligators in the nature preserve that we kayak in, so the alligators you see on our trips will not approach your kayak and have no interest in you at all. Many times we will take pictures of them from a safe distance and it adds to the wildlife experience of the tour!

Shooting out of boats and kayaks the majority of the time you will be shooting hand held. There are opportunities to setup a tripod in shallow water either from the boat or standing in the water with boots. If you have knee high water boots we recommend that you bring them, but they are not needed, as we can setup the tripods from a boat in certain locations.

Weather/Wind

The wind is one of the biggest determining factors on our ability to shoot in the swamp. In order to get to good sunrise and sunset locations for isolated cypress trees in the water, low wind is generally the conditions we are after. While there are locations to shoot during windy conditions, generally we will opt not to go out on high wind days so clients can get the most out of their trip. When booking we will try and coordinate with you the best weather days for shooting.

Wildlife like egrets, herons, turtles, snakes, owls, and alligators can be common sightings in the swamp. You will want to bring a variety of focal lengths from wide angle to telephoto to get the most out of your trip.

During the winter(Mid Dec- Early March), cypress trees lose their leaves. The swamp will have more of a grey appearance. The weather can be quite cool and fog is a possibility.

Spring(Mid March-Early June) is ones of the best times in the swamp. The weather is still mild, and wildlife is abundant. Wildflowers like iris and spider lilies can be a subject as well as abundant birds and alligators in the green cypress swamp.

The swamp is still green and lush but temperatures can be hot. Wildlife is less abundant as they seek shelter from the warm weather. Calm days and nice cloud activity is regular in the summer months.

Fall (Late October- Mid December) is another great time in the swamp. Wildlife prepares for winter and is active and abundant. The cypress trees can take on a rusty appearance and fog can be common in the mornings.

All new photos have been released from the North American tour of THE KITE RUNNER, a play with music based on Khaled Hosseini’s internationally best-selling novel.

The tour opened on April 9 at ASU Gammage in Tempe, AZ and will move on to nearly 20 cities, including Chicago, IL and Washington, DC. Prior to the launch, the show returned home to San Jose, co-presented by EnActe Arts and the Hammer Theater, for 7 performances from April 3-7.

Starring in the tour is Ramzi Khalaf as Amir. The cast also features Raji Ahsan, Danish Farooqui, Shahzeb Zahid Hussain, Hassan Nazari-Robati, Haythem Noor, James Rana, Jonathan Shaboo, Fawad Siddiqui, Kevin Stevens, Wiley Naman Strasser, Awesta Zarif, Jade Ziane, and Sophie Zmorrod. They join Salar Nader, the renowned musician who dazzled audiences in the Broadway production, who was previously announced to be reprising his role as tabla artist for the tour. 

The powerful stage production of THE KITE RUNNER tells a haunting tale of friendship spanning cultures and continents, following one man’s journey to confront his past and find redemption. Afghanistan is a divided country, and two childhood friends are about to be torn apart. It’s a beautiful afternoon in Kabul and the skies are full of the excitement and joy of a kite flying tournament. Such a great event! I am always a fan of starting off a Saturday morning with a cocktail. Drinks at the carousel bar was a nice way to begin. I enjoyed hearing about some of the history of the hotel as well. I have never seen the rooms at this hotel so it was nice to get a quick tour. The new rooms were awesome! Definitely would consider a stay cation here. I enjoyed the food..lobster Benedict was very flavorful. My potatoes were way too salty but everything else was tasty. The petite chef was cute. Would be a nice experience maybe for my nieces and nephews. Great event!

This event is exactly the reason I LOVE to be on the Yelp Elite Squad! -Delicious adult beverages. (check) And a spin on the carousel! -Gorgeous New Orleans business venue. (check) And a history lesson too! -Tour of 'not for the public' spaces. (check) That suite was SWEET! -Gourmet three course meal. (check) DEEEEEE-licious! -Animated dinner entertainment!! (MIND BLOWN!!!!) Honestly the best Elite Event that I have attended since the before times. Sa'Rah keep on doing what you do! This was an epic event, thank you!!

Wow another great Yelp Elite event! I had an amazing time. It's not everyday you get the first seating at the historic Monteleone Carousel Bar. I enjoyed learning more about the hotel and bar while sipping on a well crafted cocktail. I went with the French 007 and it was so good. The cocktail was a different twist on a French 75 one of my favorite cocktails. I will definitely order it the next time I stop by. We also had the chance to tour the newly renovated Iberville Tour of the hotel and wow! The rooms were gorgeous. I was ready to book my staycation that day. Not to mention the beautiful rooftop bar that has a bar and offers pool side bites and the hotel's new ice cream sandwiches. So good! Lastly, to end the afternoon an amazing 3 course brunch by the Le Petit Chef! I loved every moment of this brunch because it was truly an experience. Never a dull moment and the food was delicious. I look forward to telling my friends and family about this experience and about the great features of the Monteleone. Looking forward to my next visit to the Monteleone. Thanks again Sa'Rah and the Yelp Elite Team!

Saturday was a great day to be Yelp Elite! This event deserves a solid 10 out of 10 rating. Hotel Monteleone is an absolute gem. I was so excited to get a seat at the famous Carousel bar, I've been to this bar many times but never got to experience actually sitting at the bar. The drinks were delicious and it was nice hearing some hotel history while we sipped our cocktails. We took a tour of the hotel and like I said earlier, it's a gem! The suites are gorgeous and the pool area is a stunner. We ended the day with a three-course brunch at Criollo's. This was my first time experiencing an animation meal, very cool. Thanks Sa'rah for the Yelp swag and coordinating such a great day, can't wait for the next event!

I had never gotten to go to the Hotel Monteleone before, and it was such an awesome experience. Thank you Sa'Rah for putting this amazing event together!!! First we got to sit at the actual bar at their Carousel Bar. Apparently, it's usually very crowded and it's hard to grab a seat. The bar is literally a carousel turned into a bar and once the bartender flips the switch, it turns (slowly, so it's not going to make you too dizzy) at a rate of 15 minutes per rotation. The thing that makes this bar even more fun is that the bar is an enclosed ring, so the bartender has to jump over the bar to get in and out. Patrons will be asked if they don't mind stepping out of their seats for a minute if you sit at one of the spots where it's safe to hop over. Then, we got to tour their gorgeous, newly-renovated rooms in the Iberville tower and have some ice cream sandwiches poolside on the roof. The newly-renovated rooms are beautiful and luxurious. The showstopper for this event was, of course, the Le Petite Chef animation dining experience! We got to try the 3-course animation brunch menu. A projector embedded into the ceiling projects a tiny animated chef "creating" your meal for you. It's an added level of fun watching him grow veggies beside your plate, dive under the ocean to catch your lobster, walk through the snow to make your ice cream, etc.! The little chef made me a salad with fresh mozerella first, then a lobster benedict (Fancy and DELICIOUS! It comes with perfectly seasoned hash browns, house-made English muffins, and poached eggs topped with lobster meat, Béarnaise sauce, trout roe). The meal ended with a baked Alaska dessert. This was a phenomenal event. One of the best I've been to so far!!

Probably my favorite elite event I've ever been to. It had it all. Cocktails, history lesson, cocktails, spinning bar, poolside views, cocktails, delicious 3 course meals, more cocktails. It was great to finally meet Sa'Rah. If this is how she kicks things off I can only imagine what we have to look forward to. I've been to hotel Monteleone many times and even sat at the Carousel bar a couple times, but this was a truly unique experience.

This was really such a great event, thanks to Sa'Rah for curating it! Everything from the cocktails in the beginning to the dessert at the end was fabulous! This was hosted at the historical Hotel Monteleone located in the French Quarter. We started off w| drinks + history at the carousel bar, took a tour of the newly renovated Iberville Tower at the hotel, ended w| a three course animated meal at Criollo. Enjoyed every moment!

What an amazing event - just knocked it out of park from start to finish. First, amazing handcrafted cocktails at the Carousel Bar with an amazing introduction from the hotel staff. The staff shared a history of the hotel and stories of memorable events like an impromptu Jam session at the piano bar by Billy Joel. We got to enjoy our drinks, as the carousel bar continued turning. Second, a small group tour of the rooms in the renovated tower; followed by a visit to rooftop for ice cream treats. I tried the chocolate chip ice cream sandwich - one of my most favorite items to try all day. It wasn't too sweet - just simple flavors executed well. Thirdly, a fun, unique, animated three course brunch in a private room off the dining area. The service was top notch from start to finish. The wait staff team quickly took our orders and turned the courses deftly, so we could enjoy each animated snippet without obstruction. Many kudos to our new Yelp manager and the Monteleone staff for executing a flawless event!

In the top 10 of events that Ive been to since becoming an elite in 2012. Thank You to our new CM and to the Monteleone for putting on a great tour of their legendary hotel. From the carousel bar to the pool deck to the great brunch this was a truly elite event. The cocktails were superb and the the three course brunch with the cute projection was a great new dining experience here in the city. I bring friends to the Monteleone often now I am thinking of doing a staycation there. Thanks again for a great experience.

I had a great time at this Yelp elite event! It was one of the best events I've been to lately. We started at the Carousel bar which I have never been able to actually get a seat at despite living here for a long time. The drinks were amazing and it was fun to learn about the history of the bar. Then we went on a tour of one of the suites which was really nice! I liked visiting the pool too and getting to try a few bites of the ice cream sandwiches. Obviously the Petite Chef experience was the highlight of the day, I really had no idea what to expect but it was a great meal and obviously very entertaining. The staff at the Hotel Monteleone were great and very accommodating. Thank you Sa'Rah for such a great event!!
