A highly popular and sought-after Vintage travel trailer we are reposting for your perusal. Shasta’s Airflyte is still very popular in searches and (hopeful) purchases. Their reissue included lots of current updates that are, 3 years later, still very useful and current enough for most of our current technology as well. Enjoy the original overview and video walk-through at the end by Shasta’s owner.

For 2015, Shasta has created a nearly exact replica of it’s iconic 1961 Shasta Airflyte 16SC Travel Trailer complete with the legendary Shasta wings! Shasta started in 1941 and to commemorate their 75th anniversary they are producing a limited construction of 1,941 trailers and will be available in all three original colors; Matador Red, Seafoam Green, and Butternut Yellow.

Shasta has paid close attention to duplicate every small detail down to the original Shasta logo magazine rack. The new Shasta Airflytes will also feature an all-in-one bathroom with a toilet and shower in place of the closet to meet the desires of today’s campers.

The Airflyte “canned ham trailer” has a vintage interior that remains close to the original, but with all modern appliances and plumbing. Some tweaks have been made though: for example, instead of a twin-size bed, the reproduction accommodates more people by allowing for a full bed. A bunk bed option is also available. This will feature the same full bed/dinette and bunks.

It comes with a dog-bone pattern Formica on the counter tops, and birch cabinet doors, as well as LED lighting. Tuck-and-roll pleather matching the exterior color, that looks old, is on the bench seating in the dining area. The floor is also made of black-and-white vinyl.

This new travel trailer boasts tons of storage throughout with sleek finishes! The Shasta weights roughly 2,270 pounds, making it easily tow-able behind most SUVs, sedans, and mini vans. So, enjoy the finer things in life with this 2015 Shasta AirFlyte 16.

This Shasta 16 Airflyte reissue travel trailer is ready for any adventure you find yourself on. You will love the vintage appeal with all the original detailing of 1961. Inside find a 54" dinette in front with overhead cabinets that sport the same detailing. The 32" table folds down at night to easily make into a sleeping space for two. There is a refrigerator to the left of the entrance and a three burner cook-top opposite along with a single sink and counter space with storage overhead for dishes and things. There is also more storage beneath the counter-top including a few drawers. The rear left corner features a wet bath with toilet and shower. There is also a pantry in the far back corner for more dry good storage needs. Across the rear find a goucho seating pullout with storage above for plenty of seating and sleeping space at night, plus so much more!

Vintage Airstream Trailers

Airstream trailers can be identified by their rounded aluminum tops and bodies. The seemless rounded top offers better aerodynamics and protection from the rain, preventing water damage that affects many of the flat-top trailers.

In 1936, a lawyer and magazine operator named Wally Byum introduced the Airstream Clipper, the first of the silver, sausage-shaped trailers that went on be such a huge success.  Airstream’s success continues to this day, making it the oldest trailer manufacturer in the industry. One of the most popular lines of trailers is the Shasta. Easily recognized by its distinctive wings and “canned-ham” shape, the Shasta trailer was the best selling travel trailer brand from the 1950’s to the 1980’s.  They quickly became a favorite of campers all over the United States due to their low price and high quality. They remain very popular with vintage travel trailer restorers and collectors.  Shasta travel trailers were manufactured from 1941 until 2004, then again since 2010.

Vintage Aristocrat Trailers

Manufactured from 1956 to 1974, the Aristocrat travel trailers advertised garage storage with their Lo-Liner series.  Aristocrat vintage travel trailers were able to be equipped with optional metal wheels which lowered the overall height, allowing them to be stored in a garage.

Vintage Avion Trailers

Avion travel trailers were first introduced in 1957 and are some of the highest quality trailers built.  The body is two complete aluminum riveted shells with treated fiberglass insulation between them.  Avion’s high standard for quality can also be found in its hardwood floors and dovetail cabinetry.

Pre-1963 Avion trailers have an aluminum skin that can be polished to a mirror finish. Shells made after 1963 have a satin finish and are more durable.

Aloha manufactured economic travel trailers from 1954 to 1970. They were a smaller comapany but quite popular.

Vintage Kenskill Trailers

Kenskill manufactured travel trailers from 1946 to the mid 70’s.  A larger company, Kenskill had made 18,000 travel trailers by 1959.  These  trailers were designed to be stood up in and offer plenty of head room.

 Vintage Airfloat Trailers

Airfloat travel trailers were built from 1930 to 1957 and featured an aluminum body with round port-hole windows which are unable to be opened.  Later models included openable square windows to improve air flow.

Vintage Spartan Trailers

Spartan travel trailers were manufactured from 1945 to 1961 by the Spartan Aircraft Company. Owned by one of the richest men in America at the time, J. Paul Getty, no expense was spared in the creation of these high quality travel trailers.  They were built with the same techniques used in the manufacturing of their airplanes. The result was some of the highest quality travel trailers available, and their price reflected that.

Shasta Airflyte 16 Layout The 2016 Shasta Airflyte 16 is a redesign of the 1961 Shasta Airflyte travel trailer that has a goucho pull out in the rear along with overhead cabinets. A second goucho pullout is located in the rear along with a toilet and a shower. The kitchen in this trailer comes with a pantry, refrigerator, cooktop, microwave and an overhead cabinet. A large dinette and a 32-inch table complete this travel trailer. Shasta Airflyte 16 Features Shasta has created a nearly exact replica of it s iconic 1961 Shasta Airflyte 16SC travel trailer complete with the legendary Shasta wings. Shasta has paid close attention to duplicate every small detail down to the original Shasta logo magazine rack. The new Shasta Airflytes will also feature an all-in-one bathroom with a toilet and shower in place of the closet to meet the desires of today s campers. The Airflyte canned ham trailer has a vintage interior that remains close to the original, but with all modern appliances and plumbing. Some tweaks have been made though: for example, instead of a twin-size bed, the reproduction accommodates more people by allowing for a full bed. A bunk bed option is also available. Years built

How to tell the year of your trailer.

On the top of the hitch rail, numbers are stamped directly into the metal, possibly rusted/painted over. The first digit is the year, so if the first number is a “3”, then it was a 1963, etc. The last two digits indicate the model. If the last two digits were a “14” then it was a 14 foot unit. A 17T (T for toilet) would have “17T” at the end of the entire number. If the last digit is a “L” , this is a “Low” height model, such as the CUB models.

Other ways of dating your trailer.

Oftentimes the vin# cannot be read off of the hitch rail due to rust/paint ect & the date cannot be determined. You may have to date the trailer indirectly by dating the parts the trailer was made from. Marvel Co , mfg of the FORESTER hitches, dated the connecting tongue hitch directly by stamping the top with very small digits. These hitches were dated with the numeral equivalent of the month and year, “2-67” would be February – 1967. These dates only reflect when the hitch was made and not necessarily the date the camper was made, although most of the time the camper was made the same year as the hitch. The HYDRO-FLAME Furnace sometimes has a quality control inspection sticker that is dated. Remove furnace access panel, look inside using a flash light, check all parts and surfaces for these stickers. The HOLIDAY Stove/Oven, Range Hood, Icebox/Fridge, LP Lighting or the main Electric Fuse Box may also be dated or may have these types of inspection stickers.

Early Forester travel trailers (1959-1968)kept the classic canned ham shape. They are one of the last small trailer manufacturers to keep this classic shape through the 60’s.
