Maiden Voyage - Rockschool Grade 3 Guitar
Here's an exciting indie-rock piece that is fun to play from the Grade 3 Rockschool guitar syllabus. It's called Maiden Voyage and is based on songs written by Coldplay, Arcade Fire and The Killers.
In this piece, you'll be learning to play some 3-note chord voicings, sometimes with open strings too. There's a bit of lead playing involved, so you can add a little bit of overdrive to let the guitar sing.
Some guitar techniques to look out for in this piece are:
Palm-muting
Left-hand muting
Barre Chords
Dynamic changes - crescendo
There's even an 8-bar section where you can be creative and write your own solo!
If you're learning some pieces to go towards your Grade 3 exam, why not give this one a try? And listen out for this lovely Aadd9 chord that pops up too!

Rockschool electric guitar grade 3 information and videos 2012-2018
The grade 3 exam is aimed at people who have been playing for approximately 18 months to 2 years. The exam lasts for 25 minutes. The pieces last for a maximum of 2 minutes and include an improvisation section of between 4 and 8 bars. The skills required are:
- alternative picking
- using double stops on adjacent strings.
- syncopated quavers (8th notes) and semi-quavers (16th notes).
- barre chords.
- picking hand damping techniques.
- use of dynamics.
- use of controlled bends.
- use of blues and pentatonic scales in solos.
Scales and arpeggios
There are 5 scales and 2 arpeggios to be played at grade 3. Each has to be learned in the keys of G, A and B. The scale/arpeggio shapes are the same for each key. All you have to do is change the starting note. Below is a fretboard with the root notes for the 3 keys you will need to play at this grade. As long as you start on the correct note and follow the scale/arpeggio pattern you will be playing in the right key.
The following barre chords are to be played in a sequence that can be found in the grade 3 book.
The following dominant 7 chords are to be strummed and then picked (arpeggiated).
In this YouTube online video is the first piece from the Rockschool 2012-2018 grade 3 electric guitar syllabus. This is an alternative rock piece in the style of bands like Foo Fighters and Biffy Clyro. It’s main focus is on open string pedal tones, octave melodies and slides. Make sure you slide both fingers together when playing the octave melodies. Watch the 3rd and 4th fingers to make sure they don’t lag behind.
For the recording I used my 1979 Gibson Les Paul Deluxe through a Boss ME-70 effects pedal straight into my iMac via a Focusrite Saffire 6 USB interface.
Overrated was written by Bob Graceful and Kung Fu Drummer. Copyright 2012 Rockschool Ltd. Backing track used with permission of Rockschool.
Old Bones Blues
In this YouTube online video is the second piece from the Rockschool 2012-2018 grade 3 electric guitar syllabus. This is a blues piece based around the I7 (E7), IV7 (A7) and V7 (B7) chords. It’s main focus is on swing feel, double stops and and quarter note bends. Try and listen to plenty of blues music to get a feel for the genre. Watch the quarter note bends. Don’t bend them too far!
Old Bones Blues was written by Kit Morgan. Copyright 2012 Rockschool Ltd. Backing track used with permission of Rockschool.
In this YouTube online video is the third piece from the Rockschool 2012-2018 grade 3 electric guitar syllabus. This is a pop punk piece in the style of American bands such as Blink 182 and Green Day. It’s main focus is on power chords, palm muting and pre-bends. Watch your barre chords at the beginning and aim for nice crisp rests Keep the plam muting chunky by keeping your fretting hand as close to the bridge as possible and keep it relaxed when doing the fast strumming from bars 17 to 23.
For the recording I used my 2007 Fender HSS Strat through a Boss ME-70 effects pedal straight into my Macbook via a Focusrite Saffire 6 USB interface.

Maiden Voyage
In this YouTube online video is the fourth piece from the Rockschool 2012-2018 grade 3 electric guitar syllabus. This is an Indie Rock piece influenced b bands like Coldplay and The Killers. It’s main focus is on open string drones, cross picking and palm muting. Think carefully about the chord voicings you want to use in section E. Watch the muted strings in the double stop palm muted melody in bars 21 to 28. Make sure you stay in contact with the strings and just release the pressure with your fretting hand.
For the recording I used my 1979 Gibson Les Paul Deluxe through a Boss ME-70 effects pedal straight into my Macbook via a Focusrite Saffire 6 USB interface.
Maiden Voyage was written by Joe Bennett. Copyright 2012 Rockschool Ltd. Backing track used with permission of Rockschool.
Rasta Monkey
In this YouTube online video is the fifth piece from the Rockschool 2012-2018 grade 3 electric guitar syllabus. This is a reggae piece in the style of reggae stars such as Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff. It’s main focus is on a reggae feel, palm muted riffs and off beat chords. Watch your barre chords in section C and aim for nice crisp staccato and rests. Relax the pressure on the chord for the muted strums. Remember to try and keep a relaxed feel!
NOTE: There is a typo at the beginning of the piece in bar 7. Two G notes (6th string, 3rd fret) need to be added to the TAB. You can see the corresponding notes on the stave.
For the recording I used my 2007 Fender HSS Strat through a Boss ME-70 effects pedal straight into my Macbook Pro via a Focusrite Saffire 6 USB interface.
Rasta Monkey was written by Noam Lederman. Copyright 2012 Rockschool Ltd. Backing track used with permission of Rockschool.
In this YouTube online video is the sixth piece from the Rockschool 2012-2018 grade 3 electric guitar syllabus. This is an metal piece in tribute to bands like Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. It’s main focus is on string bending, hammer ons and pull offs and blues scale riffs. Use a barre for the power chord pull offs in section A. Practice moving your power chords up and down the fingerboard. Stretch your fingers out slightly as you slide from the higher to lower frets as they are wider apart. Take your time learning the single line riff in section B. Remember to play in 5th position for the most part. This means your 1st finger plays the 5th fret, your 2nd finger plays the 6th fret and your 3rd finger plays the 7th fret. Don’t forget the vibrato in sections D and E. Don’t bend the string too much or it will sound out of tune!
For the recording I used my 1979 Gibson Les Paul Deluxe through a Boss ME-70 effects pedal straight into my Macbook Pro via a Focusrite Saffire 6 USB interface.
Fallout was written by Charlie Griffiths and Jason Bowld. Copyright 2012 Rockschool Ltd. Backing track used with permission of Rockschool.

Titanic II: The Modern Rebirth of a Legendary Ocean Liner
T he Titanic 2 ship is not merely a vessel; it's a floating homage to one of the most storied maritime legends in history. This ambitious project aims to resurrect the grandeur of the original RMS Titanic while ensuring adherence to 21st-century safety standards. The concept of Titanic 2 is to recreate the experience of the original ocean liner, which famously sank in 1912 after colliding with an iceberg, but with a modern twist that promises to captivate both history enthusiasts and sea travel aficionados.
The vision behind the Titanic 2 ship
The vision behind the Titanic 2 ship is a blend of reverence and ambition, a tribute to the unparalleled opulence of the original RMS Titanic while promising a safe and modern sea voyage. This ambitious project is not merely about replicating the physical dimensions of the iconic ocean liner; it's about capturing the spirit and grandeur that the Titanic represented in the early 20th century. The developers of the Titanic 2 ship are driven by a desire to offer passengers the opportunity to step back in time and experience the elegance and luxury of the golden age of ocean travel, complete with the grand staircase, lavish dining rooms, and period-appropriate attire.
Yet, the Titanic 2 ship is more than a floating museum; it's a statement of technological progress and a nod to the advancements in maritime safety. While the romance of the past is a significant draw, the team behind the Titanic 2 ship is equally focused on ensuring that the vessel honors the legacy of those who sailed on the original Titanic . The vision is to merge the historical allure with contemporary comforts, creating a unique travel experience that pays homage to the past while embracing the future.
Design and features of the Titanic 2 ship
The Titanic 2 ship is a remarkable feat of modern engineering that honors its namesake's luxurious design while incorporating the latest technological advancements. The vessel's aesthetics are a near-replica of the original Titanic , featuring the same grand staircase and opulent first-class cabins that exude the elegance of the early 20th century. Yet, beneath its vintage veneer, the Titanic 2 ship is thoroughly outfitted with contemporary amenities. Passengers can expect state-of-the-art navigation systems and the comfort of modern air-conditioning, alongside digital entertainment options that seamlessly blend into the classic decor.
Beyond its visual similarities, the Titanic 2 ship is engineered to offer more than just a nostalgic replica of the original Titanic . It's a fully functional, ocean-going cruise liner equipped with cutting-edge safety features, which will be discussed in detail later in the article. The ship also prioritizes environmental considerations, employing the latest in fuel-efficient engines and waste management systems.
Planned routes and maiden voyage details
The anticipation surrounding the Titanic 2 ship's maiden voyage is palpable among maritime enthusiasts and history buffs alike. This modern replica aims to pay homage to its namesake's fabled journey, with plans to sail the same transatlantic route that the original RMS Titanic attempted over a century ago. Departing from Southampton, UK, and bound for New York City, the Titanic 2 ship is designed to offer passengers the chance to step back in time while enjoying the safety and comfort of modern technology.
Details about the Titanic 2 ship's maiden voyage have been a topic of great curiosity. While the exact date has been subject to change, the journey is intended to closely mirror the original 1912 schedule , providing a sense of authenticity to the experience. Passengers will be able to traverse the North Atlantic, following in the wake of the original Titanic , but with the assurance that the Titanic 2 ship is equipped with the latest navigation and safety systems.
Safety measures and modern advancements on the Titanic 2 ship
The Titanic 2 ship is not just a replica of its ill-fated predecessor; it's a modern marvel equipped with the latest safety measures and technological advancements to ensure the well-being of all on board. In the wake of the original Titanic 's tragic sinking, the new vessel has been designed with a double hull and modern navigation and radar equipment that far surpasses the early 20th-century technology. These updates are crucial , as they provide enhanced protection against icebergs and other potential hazards at sea. Moreover, the lifeboat capacity on Titanic 2 exceeds the number of passengers, ensuring that in the unlikely event of an emergency, everyone can be accommodated safely and quickly.
Beyond the structural and navigational improvements, the Titanic 2 ship boasts cutting-edge safety protocols, including rigorous training for the crew in emergency procedures. Fire safety systems have been significantly upgraded, featuring the latest in smoke detection and water sprinklers. Additionally, the communication systems on board are state-of-the-art, ensuring that the Titanic 2 can maintain contact with the outside world, regardless of its location.

The journey of the Titanic 2 project is as intriguing as the historical tale it seeks to revive. As we navigate through the uncertainties and challenges that accompany this ambitious endeavor, one cannot help but feel a sense of anticipation for the potential resurrection of a bygone era. Whether the Titanic 2 ultimately graces the seas as a triumph of engineering or becomes a cautionary tale, its story serves as a captivating reflection on our collective fascination with the past.
