A Chicago man was ordered held on $1 million bail for allegedly shooting a man Saturday evening at a Villa Park amusement park in the presence of several young children.

Meco Norris, 25, pulled out a gun and shot a man three times at Safari Land indoor amusement park, 701 North Ave., according to the DuPage County state’s attorney’s office.

The man was taken to a hospital with gunshots to his chest, shoulder and elbow and was released that evening. Prosecutors did not say what led up to the shooting.

After the shooting, Norris ran into a residential area and was arrested around 3 a.m. Sunday at a home in Chicago, police said.

The shooting happened in the presence of several children, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said.

“Mr. Norris’ alleged actions, with multiple children literally just feet away, demonstrate the most horrifying disregard for public safety I have seen in my 30-plus years as a prosecutor,” Berlin said in a statement.

There were also hundreds of other people inside the venue who witnessed the shooting, Villa Park Police Chief Michael Rivas said.

“While one person was physically harmed in this incident, there are hundreds of more victims, from very young children to grandparents, who will bear scars emotionally and psychologically for a long time,” Rivas said in the statement.

Norris, who lives in the Logan Square neighborhood, faces a counts of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm and reckless discharge of a firearm.

His next court date is Dec. 17.

The successful apprehension of the suspect in this case would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of the Villa Park, Lombard and Chicago Police Departments. I also thank DuPage County State’s Attorney Bob Berlin and his office for their legal guidance and support with this case.” — Villa Park Chief of Police Michael Rivas

Norris’ next court appearance is scheduled for December 17, 2021, for arraignment in front of Judge Reidy.

Initial Response to Shooting Emergency

Police and paramedics from Villa Park responded about 7:00 p.m. Saturday, November 13, 2021 to a shooting at Safari Land, 701 West North Avenue in Villa Park. On arrival police discovered one male shooting victim and secured the scene as they assessed that the shooter had fled the scene (Meco Norris was taken into custody in Chicago around 3:00 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 14, 2021).

Ring.com | Resident says this is the man police are looking for, “he came through my yard. If you see him call police”

Police described the suspect as a male/black, wearing a black jacket with white writing, blue jeans, and a black baseball cap. The suspect was seen running into the residential area near Lincoln and Roy, and was also possibly seen running eastbound on Plymouth from Yale Street.

A Ring video at 6:59 p.m. captured an image of a male/black subject walking through a backyard, wearing a dark jacket with white lettering across the chest and a large logo similar to the Las Vegas Raiders logo that was visible on the back of the jacket. The jacket also had a white band at the bottom of the jacket near the waist line, and white near the collar area of the jacket. He was carrying a GAP store shopping bag (dark bag with white GAP letters) and a white or light colored bag in his right hand. He was also wearing (backwards) a dark baseball cap with white or light lettering. While walking in the backyard, the subject stopped suddenly — apparently to prevent being seen at an opening at the driveway and wait for a car to pass on the street.

At 10:06 p.m. Saturday Villa Park stated on their official Facebook page that the police department believes the suspect had left the area.

Police reported that one male victim was shot three times, and is being treated at a local hospital. His injuries are initially believed to be non-life-threatening. Police said the shooting appeared to be an isolated incident Saturday night.

Shooting at Safari Land in Villa Park; Suspect in custody; incident remains under investigation

The Villa Park Police Department, with the assistance of the Chicago Police Department, took a suspect into custody early Sunday morning following a shooting at the Safari Land indoor amusement center in Villa Park Saturday night.

According to the Daily Herald , Meco M. Morris, 25, of Chicago, was charged with aggravated battery/discharge of a firearm and reckless discharge of a firearm after he allegedly shot a man shortly before 7 p.m. on Saturday at Safari Land, located at 701 W. North Ave.

The victim was allegedly shot three times and treated at a local hospital. The injuries were described as not life-threatening, according to a statement released by the Villa Park Police Department on Facebook.

The shooting appeared to be an isolated incident, the statement said.

Following the shooting, police said the suspect—described as a black male, wearing a black jacket with white writing, blue jeans and a black baseball cap—was reportedly seen running into a residential area just south of Safari Land, near Lincoln Avenue and Roy Drive. An additional alert issued by police noted that there had been a possible sighting of the subject running eastbound on Plymouth Street near Yale Avenue. That location is about one mile southeast of Safari Land.

The suspect was reportedly taken into custody at around 3 a.m. Sunday in Chicago at an apartment complex in Logan Square.

Safari Land, which has eight indoor attractions, 12 bowling lanes and more than 100 arcade games, was closed on Sunday. It released the following statement on Sunday:

“Safari Land wishes to extend its heartfelt sympathy to all who were impacted by last night’s [referring to Saturday night] senseless violence at our facility. While this was an isolated and targeted incident between two individuals who knew each other, it is still inconceivable that someone could commit such an act at Safari Land.

“We wish to extend our thanks and appreciation to our staff who handled themselves as professionally as possible under stressful conditions as well as the Villa Park Police Department, [the] DuPage County States Attorney’s Office and all the law enforcement agencies that brought this incident to a successful resolution with the arrest of the offender as quickly as possible.

“Safari Land continues to work with law enforcement and is committed to ensuring and providing a safe environment for all our customers.”

Police said the incident remains under investigation.

Man shot to death near Exposition Park street vendor

By Matthew Rodriguez

Updated on: April 10, 2024 / 8:23 PM PDT / KCAL News

Detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department are searching for the suspect who killed a man next to a street vendor at Exposition Park Tuesday afternoon.

The deadly shooting happened at about 5:05 p.m. at the intersection of Martin Luther King Boulevard and Vermont Avenue, near the southwest corner of the park. Investigators believe the suspect walked up to the victim and began firing before running away.

The victim died on the road near a local street vendor. He was identified as 26-year-old Los Angeles resident Jonathan Orellana-Lozada by the Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner on Wednesday.

Officers could not locate the suspect nor a murder weapon when they arrived. The LAPD set up a perimeter in the area and closed off a few roads to start canvassing.

Investigators did not release a motive or the suspect's description as of Tuesday afternoon.
