The Temple Run Tour

The Temple Run

Bout India tours planned our itinerary for a road trip across Southern India - covering historical places, temples, major cities and hill stations. We are very impressed by the Mysuru and Bengaluru palaces. We enjoyed visiting Hampi - learning the about the history of the Devaraya empire. Our guide Basava there was phenomenal. He is a local guy, passionate about the history and spoke very good English. We enjoyed the cooler places like Coorg along the way. Cave temples at Badami are a a sight to see. Will definitely use Bout Tours for our next trip in India.

Incredible South India

Overall, we were very pleased with this tour. It provided a fine introduction to south India , showing us a wide vareity of landscapes and historical sites. The driver, Loukesh, was excellent. Throughout there was a problem with the poor quality of spoken English, in particular on the part of the local tourist guides. Most of the hotels were adequate but in two cases we found them uinsatisfactory. (Details can be provided.)

The guides were friendly and explain things clearly and in great depth ( they really new there areas well ) . The trip did not take us to any shops etc we did not want to visit a really plus point . I would use this company again to book a tour .

Reviews of Small Group tours to Southern India

Excellent tour to wonderful places in Southern India. Very good guide.
Great tour! Excellent itinerary, good hotels and well paced. Our leader, Garima, was highly professional and friendly.
The Trip exceeded our expectations. We were lucky to have Jeshin as our tour Guide. He was well informed and was pretty clear with setting expectations about our BasiX tour package. We got a true cultural experience that included travel within India on Private Bus, Trains, Tuk-Tuks, Ferry and State Transport Bus. We even rode an Elephant in Periyaar. With the right attitude and patience, this is a rewarding tour. The food was exquisite in most cities (you should explore local options). Jeshin gave us multiple options in most cities. We enjoyed Trivandram, Kochi, Varkala, Hampi & Mysore. Mysore Palace was so crowded due to the Dec Holidays, we probably should have skipped it. The Mysore Silk saree shopping and eating at Mylaree & 'Frosting' made up for it. Hotels and Homestays in most places was pretty good. I think Mysore was probably the only bad one since there were so many choices, Interpid could do better. Hotel in Hampi was the best. The only complaint we have is regarding the Periyaar Sanctuary. That day could have been planned better by Intrepid. If they had made advance reservations when we were in Varkala, we would have been able to do the Govt Jungle Trips as opposed to private outside the Jungle trips. We didnt have any tickets left, by the time we reached Periyaar. We did d teh Kerala Martial arts, which was good, but left a sore spot about missing the jungle trek. Overall a really nicely planned tour and well worth its shoe string budget cost. Enjoy!!! we did :)

Popular south india tour packages, south india tour packages faqs.

Q. What are the places to be visited on a South India tour? A. When sorting through South India packages, make sure your research is complete and you have shortlisted some of its most stunning destinations. A stay in Karnataka can include a couple of nights in Bangalore, its green, bustling capital before proceeding to Coorg for a few days at a coffee estate. On your return you can stay a night or two in Mysore. Another idea is to proceed to Wayanad from Coorg before returning to Bangalore or continuing further into Kerala. You can club a Tamil Nadu and Kerala visit, by arriving in Chennai and continuing to Pondicherry and then to Madurai. Stay for a couple of days in Madurai to see its iconic temples including the Meenakshi Amman Temple and keep a day aside for Rameswaram known for the Ramanathaswamy Temple and the frontier town of Dhanushkodi. From Madurai you can proceed to Periyar National Park in Kerala, then travel further uphill to Munnar. From Munnar you can drive down to Kochi, then to Alleppey, Kollam on a houseboat before continuing to Kovalam. Spend a day in Trivandrum, see its temples and museums and take a flight out of there. Q. What are the most famous beaches in South India? A. Prior to closing one of the South India tour packages, be sure that it incorporates some of the best beaches in the region. A beach holiday in South India is incomplete if it does not involve a stay in the erstwhile French town of Pondicherry. Pondicherry’s Promenade Beach although rocky has an aura of its own and is also where the whole town meets in the evenings when the thoroughfare is closed to traffic and one can stroll on it, eat an ice-cream and watch a gorgeous sunset. Auroville Beach and Paradise Beach are its other pristine beaches perfect for lazing around or wave surfing. Kovalam Beach in Kerala is among its most famous beaches. The rocky promontory with its lighthouse lends it a picture-postcard quality. Visit Mahabalipuram for the shore temples from the Pallava dynasty. The rock-cut shore temples are iconic to Mahabalipuram and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Kanyakumari Beach is another significant beach you should round up on your South India tour. It is where the waters of the three oceans - Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean - that make up the Indian peninsula merge. There are boats leaving from it to the nearby Vivekananda Rock Memorial. The beach is bustling with souvenir shops and little eateries and houses the temple dedicated to the deity after which it is named, Kumari Amman. Q. What are the popular hill stations in South India? A. If you are going through South India holiday packages with the idea of rounding up some of its serene hill stations, you need to make sure it incorporates the below mentioned destinations. Tamil Nadu has its share of some very atmospheric hill stations such as Kodaikanal, Conoor and Ooty with the British-built Nilgiri Mountain Railway ascending the hills and passing through tunnels, offering you a ride you would remember for time to come. In Kerala you can visit Wayanad and Munnar and enjoy a breathtaking tea garden stay. Karnataka’s most popular hill retreat is Coorg which is home to its tallest peak Tadiandamole and a stay amid a coffee and spice estate. Among other popular hill stations across South India, you can travel to Yercaud, Yelagiri and Valparai in Tamil Nadu, Thekkady, Athirapally, Ponmudi in Kerala, Chikmagalur, Sakleshpur in Karnataka, Araku Valley, Horsley Hills, Tirumala that houses the iconic Tirumala Balaji Temple in Andhra Pradesh. Q. Which is the nearest airport to Hampi? A. To reach Hampi by air, you need to take a flight to Belgaum airport, which is located 270 km away and it takes about 6 hours drive. Belgaum is served by frequent flight connectivity from Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru and Jabalpur airports. Another nearest airport to Hampi is in Bengaluru, which has air connectivity from all parts of India. The airport approximately 350 km from Hampi and can be reached in a journey of six and a half hours. Q. When should I plan my trip to Kerala? A. Kerala being one of the most popular destinations in the south has something to offer all year round. However, the tourist season in Kerala starts from September and continues till April. The peak season is when the weather is slightly cooler and dry from December through February. If you are looking for Ayurveda treatments, monsoon is the best time to receive the therapeutic treatments. The cool, moist and crisp atmosphere helps the body open up its pores and, making it receptive to herbal oils and therapies. The rainy season is also an excellent time to find good hotel deals from May to September. Also, plan your trip when the state celebrates its festivals, June-September for snake boat races,  the state festival Onam between August to September, and elephant festivals ranging from January to May. Q. Is there a dress code to enter temples in South India? A. Temples like Padmanabhaswamy Temple have a strict dress code where men need to wear mundu or dhoti and should not wear shirts of any kind. Women need to wear a sari, churidar or a South Indian half sari. Tirupati Temple advises wearing traditional clothes or proper attire. In most cases, men can enter with a pant-trouser outfit and just can just put a dhoti over their trousers where required for the visit. Children are also expected to wear fully-covered clothes. Q. Which are the popular honeymoon destinations in South India? A. The hills of Ooty and Kodaikanal in Tamil Nadu, the jungles of Coorg in Karnataka and Thekkady in Kerala, the backwaters of Alleppey and Kumarakom or the tea town of Munnar in Kerala are some of the most romantic destinations for a newly married couple. These are mostly hilly destinations with scenic beauty and peaceful surrounding providing the much-needed solitude. Q. Are cameras allowed inside the temples in South India? A. Most temples in South India don’t allow cameras inside its premise although cell phones are allowed. Bigger and sacred temples like Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Kerala, Tirupati Temple in Andhra Pradesh and Meenakshi Temple in Tamil Nadu does not allow entry of camera inside its premises. You can, however, click the temples from outside. However, historical ruins such as Hampi and Mahabalipuram doesn’t restrict visitors from photography inside its temples. Q. Most tourists club Pondicherry and Mahabalipuram during their trip to Tamil Nadu because both are located close to each other about 96 km away, which is a two hour’s journey. You can arrive in Chennai and travel to Pondicherry from Chennai via the East Coast Road (ECR). En route, you can halt for sightseeing in Mahabalipuram followed by an overnight stay. The next day you can head to Pondicherry. Q. How to pack for my South India tour? A. Temperature is much warmer in South India. Pack comfortable footwear such as a slip-on, light cotton clothes, hats, sunscreen, etc. If visiting the hill stations, get warm clothes. Bring decent and conservative clothes for temple visits. Q. Is it safe for a woman to travel solo in South India? A. South India is a very safe place for women tourists. Solo female travellers can easily travel in popular tourist destinations such as Cochin in Kerala, Pondicherry in Tamil Nadu, Mysore and Bengaluru in Karnataka, and the city of Hyderabad. It is advisable you book your South India tour package with a trusted travel agent and always seek advice on the current situations of the place. Q. How to reach Tirupati temple? A. Southern India

15 days | travel to the cultural and scenic highlights of southern india..

Local woman picking tea in a tea field, India

Lush and tropical, southern India is inspiring and delightful. Beneath the green shade of a coastal paradise, meet with locals in their fishing villages and tribal homes. Join them in the bazaars, on buses and boats, or even on pilgrimage in Madurai. From cultural sights like the Maharaja's Palace in Mysore to French-influenced Puducherry and the vast landscape of Periyar, southern India's spirituality, friendly people, and wild animal sanctuaries make it a fascinating part of the country to explore.

Trip overview

  • Discover the waterfalls, tea plantations and spice markets of South India’s Western Ghats, a jungle-clad mountain range older than the Himalaya and one of the most biodiverse regions in the world.
  • Known as the ‘Queen of the Arabian Sea’, Kochi is a fascinating blend of Chinese, Portuguese, Dutch and English influences, and is best explored by ferry.
  • Step back in time among the iridescent hills of the very British ‘Snooty Ooty’ – home of snooker and the charming Nilgiri toy train.
  • Search for elusive wildlife, including elephants, sloths, and birds on safari around one of the best places in India to observe nature up close – Periyar National Park.
  • Experience a unique way of life with a family homestay and home-cooked meals in the idyllic backwaters of Kerala.
  • By travelling on this trip, you’ll directly support our Intrepid Foundation partner, Positive Change for Marine Life. Donations help them to nurture ocean health with community-led conservation initiatives that inspire coastal restoration, sustainable fishing practices and waste-managemen
  • This trip is packed full of sights and experiences, including many main highlights of southern India along with plenty of insights into local life. There is an extensive amount of travel and a number of single-night stays to ensure you can fit as much as possible.
  • This adventure uses a variety of transport options, including train and bus travel for up to 8 hours. There is also an included overnight sleeper train from Mysore to Mamallapuram, so be sure to have a book, some podcasts, and your best travel games ready.
  • Sleeper trains a quintessential Indian experience and a great way to travel long distances while still getting maximum time in each place. With the experience can come some unpredictability – there are occasional delays or even cancellations. Beds are padded berths with sheets, pillow, and blanket provided (although some people prefer to bring their own sleeping sheet). Please note that you may be sharing with locals of the same or opposite gender. See the Transport section of the Essential Trip Information for more detail about train travel in India or this guide for more about train travel around the world: https://www.intrepidtravel.com/adventures/overnight-train-travel-around-the-world/
  • Up in the Western Ghats, it can be surprisingly cool at night, especially in winter. Check weather reports before you go to help with your packing, and remember too to bring modest clothing (ie. pants or skirts that go below the knees and tops that cover your arms) for our visits to religious sites in particular.
  • Part of travelling with Intrepid means respecting local cultures and sensibilities. That way you get the most out of your interactions with local people and environments. You’ll be visiting a few temples throughout your adventure, so please ensure that you’re dressed appropriately with legs and shoulders covered.

Your Indian adventure starts today in Kochi with a welcome meeting at 6 pm. If you arrive in Kochi early, there are plenty of things to see and do. Once an important spice-trading centre, Kochi has been under Portuguese, Dutch and British rule at various times throughout history. Explore with one of our Urban Adventures or wander down to the shore and seek out the huge Chinese fishing nets dotted along the coast of Fort Cochin.

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

This morning, take on Kochi with a leader-led orientation tour. Take a local tuk tuk to Mattancherry and drop by the Dutch Palace, built by the Portuguese in the 16th century before it was renovated and presented to the Rajas of Cochin by the Dutch. Pay an optional visit to Paradesi Synagogue – the oldest active synagogue in the Commonwealth and home to many rare antiques. Then amble around the spice bazaars and antique stores of Fort Cochin. In the evening, experience a Kathakali performance. This Keralan dance is an ornately costumed display of storytelling, requiring complete control of the body.

  • Kochi - Leader-led Fort Kochi walking tour
  • Kochi - Dutch Palace
  • Kochi - Kathakali performance
  • Kochi - Jewish Synagogue - INR5

Buckle up, because most of today is spent travelling. Catch a 3.5-hour train to Coimbatore, before travelling by private vehicle to Conoor, where dinner is included at your accommodation tonight.

Spend the morning in Conoor with an orientation walk and a visit to a tea plantation to learn about the history of tea production. Later board Ooty’s renowned toy train for a ride along the Nilgiri Mountain Railway. Be sure to get a window seat for great views over the lush countryside. In nearby Conoor, visit a tea plantation to learn about the history of tea production. Spend the rest of the day exploring Ooty’s Botanical Gardens, which are home to over 650 species of plants and trees. Alternatively, get a little bit romantic with a boat ride on the lake.

  • Ooty - Nilgiri Mountain Railway & Tea Plantation visit
  • Ooty - Botanical Gardens - INR50
  • Ooty - Boat ride - INR200

Take a private vehicle for the short drive to Bandipur today. Set against the backdrop of the Nilgiri Hills, Mudumalai National Park was once the Mysore Maharaja's private hunting ground. In 1974 it was brought under Project Tiger and is now one of the best sanctuaries in India to observe wildlife in close proximity. Embark on a short safari in search of tigers, leopards, elephants, sloth bears, sambars, spotted deer, and much more. There's also an amazing variety of birdlife in the park. Tonight’s family-run accommodation in Bandipur is a mixed-gender dormitory style with a common bathroom. This dorm room is only open to your group.

  • Jungle Lodge (1 night)
  • Bandipur - National Park Safari

Travel by private vehicle across the scenic Karnataka plains to Mysore, stopping to share a biryani lunch with local Loval host and family. Mysore is an easy-going town with a pleasant climate, perfect for wandering around on foot. Your leader will provide an orientation walk for you to get your bearings. A visit to Mysore is incomplete without a look around Mysore Palace. One of the most ornate palaces in India, its interior is full of colour, mosaics, and mirrors.

  • Mysore - Home cooked lunch & family visit
  • Mysore - Maharaja's Palace
  • Mysore - Leader-led walking tour

This morning, head out of Mysore and climb Chamundi Hill to the Sri Chamundeswari Temple, dedicated to the Hindu Goddess Durga. Continue on to the Keshava Temple in the small town of Somnathpur – an excellent example of Hoysala architecture. You’ll also have some time to pay an optional visit to Tipu Sultan’s mausoleum in Srirangapatna, or instead, return to Mysore for a palm reading or to catch a film at the local cinema. Tonight, board an 11-hour overnight sleeper train to Chennai.

  • Overnight Sleeper Train (1 night)
  • Mysore - Keshava Temple
  • Mysore - Chamundi Hill & Temple
  • Mysore - Cinema - INR100
  • Mysore - Tipu Sultan's Mausoleum - INR500

Part of travelling with Intrepid means respecting local cultures and sensibilities. That way you get the most out of your interactions with local people and environments. You’ll be visiting a few temples today, so please ensure that you’re dressed appropriately with legs and shoulders covered.

Sleeper trains in India are clean and air-conditioned, and beds are padded berths with sheets, pillow, and blanket provided (although some travellers prefer to bring their own sleeping sheet). Please also note that on the sleeper train you may be sharing with locals of the same or another gender.

After arriving in Chennai, take a private vehicle along the scenic East Coast Road to Mamallapuram. Explore this ancient seaport town by tuk tuk, paying a visit to the seventh-century Shore Temple and the enormous bas-relief rock carving, known as Arjuna's Penance. There will also be time to inspect the town’s numerous mandapams (pillared temple pavilions), watch local stonemasons at work, or just to kick back and relax at a beachside restaurant.

  • Mamallapuram - Shore Temples guided tour

Travel by private vehicle for 5 hours through palm trees and rice paddies to Puducherry (Pondicherry). On arrival, head out with your group and leader on a walking tour to see local temples, the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, and the French Quarter. Once a French colony, you’ll see evidence of French influence in Puducherry's architecture, its wide town squares, and even in the uniforms of the police.

  • Puducherry - Leader-led French Quarter walking tour

Transfer by taxi to the railway station at Villupuram and board a train to the temple city of Madurai (approximately 6 hours). Madurai’s Tamil roots stretch back 2500 years, making it one of the oldest cities in India. Wander the lamp-lit labyrinth of the Sri Meenakshi Amman Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva and goddess Meenakshi. Visit the Gandhi Memorial Museum, which displays a detailed account of India’s struggle for independence along with the bloodstained dhoti the famous leader wore when he was assassinated.

  • Madurai - Sri Meenakshi Temple
  • Madurai - Gandhi Museum - Free

Part of travelling with Intrepid means respecting local cultures and sensibilities. That way you get the most out of your interactions with local people and environments. You’ll be visiting some temples today, so please ensure that you’re dressed appropriately with legs and shoulders covered. Also, please respect local guidelines and rules, including no cameras or photography.

This morning, travel by private vehicle along a winding road to the Periyar National Park and Tiger Reserve. High in the ranges of the Western Ghats, the park is set among stunning scenery and is the most popular wildlife sanctuary in Southern India. Both today and tomorrow, you’ll get to explore the national park on foot and will understand why Periyar is a popular wilderness sanctuary because of its lush surroundings. Enjoy a tour of a local spice plantation. And then join our hosts at a local family and try some authentic home-cooked flavors in Southern India.

  • Periyar - Spice plantation visit
  • Periyar - Home cooked meal

Venture back into the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary today for a guided nature walk. Encounters with animals in the wild are never guaranteed, and this is more of a jungle walk than an animal spotting tour, but do look out for tiger tracks, spotted deer, Indian elephants, or gaur – the world's largest species of buffalo. In the afternoon, unwind with an optional ayurvedic massage at your accommodation, or just relax in this scenic setting with a drink in hand.

  • Periyar - National Park
  • Periyar - Guided nature walk
  • Periyar - Boat trip - INR650

Please note that the nature walk is usually the Green Zone walk in the Periyar National Park. Even though this park is a Tiger Reserve, tigers are extremely rare and shy in Periyar. Your nature walk is nonetheless a fascinating experience, as the local guides are villagers who have lived in the area for generations and are very knowledgeable of the flora and fauna of the area.

Temperatures and humidity can be high in southern India, especially when walking around sites like the Periyar. Be prepared by taking plenty of drink breaks and wearing appropriate skin protection. Your nature walk will start early, but it does get quite hot and humid in the late morning.

Travelling by private vehicle, pass through the rubber, tea, and coffee plantations on the way to the backwaters of Kerala. Board a motorboat to cross to the island village where you’ll stay with a local family tonight. In the late afternoon, explore the island with a local English-speaking guide, and sometimes your homestay host! This is a great chance to meet locals and learn more about their unique way of life. Take a leisurely punt boat ride around the waterways and enjoy the scenery. In the evening, share stories and a traditional home-cooked Keralan meal with your host family.

  • Homestay (1 night)
  • Kerala Backwaters - Pole boat ride
  • Kerala Backwaters - Village walk

In Kerala, a homestay is similar to a local guesthouse where the family usually live on site. Accommodation is twin-share, with a private bathroom. Delicious local meals are cooked in-house by your hosts.

Wake early, before crossing the backwaters by private boat to Alleppey. From here, take a 2-hour local bus back to Kochi. The rest of the day is free for you to choose your own adventure. Perhaps you’d like to stroll down Princess Street for a spot of shopping, or book yourself into a southern Indian cooking class – your group leader will have some other recommendations, so be sure to ask them. Tonight, why not gather together with your group and have a night out at a local restaurant. Whatever you do, be sure to snack on a pazham pori (fried fritter of banana or plantain) while you explore the city.

With no activities planned for today, you are able to leave the accommodation at any time.

5 breakfasts, 4 lunches, 3 dinners

Located in South Bengaluru, the Lalbagh Botanical Garden is not only one of the largest botanical gardens in India, but also the first of its kind, with planned routes, glasshouses and ornamental flowers growing throughout the property. The garden itself is spread over an area of 240 acres and its construction was commissioned by the famous ruler Hyder Ali. It was finally completed by his son- Tipu Sultan- who designed the gardens keeping in mind the beautiful gardens of Sira in Tumkur District in Karnataka.Lalbagh is home to exotic flowers that were imported by the Sultan from countries like France, Persia, Arabia, Afghanistan, etc. Therefore, flowers that were previously never seen in India were first witnessed in this historical garden. Trees that were imported by Tipu Sultan from all over the world can still be found growing here.Apart from the exotic trees, visitors can also catch sight of some rare birds such as the Myna, pond heron, purple moorhen, parakeets, Brahminy kites, the common egret and much more. Apart from the stunning flora and fauna of the Lalbagh Botanical Garden, it has another striking attraction, which is the Lalbagh rock. This rock, which is said to be over 3000 years old, is one of the oldest rocks in the world and can be found in the center of the garden.

Bangalore Palace

In the technology-driven, futuristic Silicon Valley of India, monuments of historical significance boasting of a glorious past are also abundant. The historical heritage of the city is so magnificent and eminent that it rises to prominence on its own. One such landmark is the Tudor style Bangalore Palace. The Palace is a perfect representation of the lavishness and splendour with which India's most resilient dynasties ruled. Famous for its opulent architecture and amusement activities, the Palace is visited by several visitors every day. The colossal Palace boasts of massive courtyards, bright interiors, kingly grounds, splendid spiral staircases, stately towers and a luscious garden in a proud display of posh regality.Anyone who admires classic architecture and artistry would be delighted to experience it first hand at this Palace. It also houses an amusement park in its enclave to the delight of many younger visitors. Having been a private residence to the Wodeyar family, Bangalore palace offers a linear perspective into the royal life of the forepassed era. It is plush with a vibrant and varied collection of ancient royal artefacts, paraphernalia, hunting trophies and family photos. The Palace houses some of the most famous paintings of the 19th Century, including the works of one of India's most celebrated artists Raja Ravi Verma. The Palace grounds very often become venues for concerts and festivals. World-renowned artists like Enrique and Guns N' Roses have graced the palace grounds with their talent and presence. The Palace hence combines the richness and luxury of royal history with the vivacious and exuberant demeanour of the youth. Bangalore Palace HistoryOriginally a property of Reverend J Garrett, the principal of a school in the cantonment town at that time, the area where the Palace is now located was purchased from him by the British Guardians of Maharaja Chamarajendra Wadiyar for 40,000 rupees. The construction of the palace began in the year 1874. Mr John Cameron of Lalbagh was assigned the task of landscaping Palace along with its surroundings. The complete construction of the palace was completed in the year, 1878.The Palace saw many additions and modifications in its architecture in subsequent years. Maharaja Jayachamaraja Wadiyar added a few portions like the twin external staircase, the platform for musicians etc. outside the Durbar Hall. In 1970, HH Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar transferred ownership of the property to two companies, Chamundi Hotels and Shree Venkateshwara Real Estate Enterprises. However, this transaction was later shown to be fraudulent. A legal battle followed between this deal and Jayachamarajendra's son, Srikanta Datta. The five sisters of Srikanta Datta are now in possession of sections of the 28 acres of the Palace. In the year 1990 Srikant Datta finally compromised with the Chamaraju group and got back his part of the property including the main Palace except for 45 acres that the Chamaraju group still retains. Architecture:The Palace showcases exquisite wooden interiors surrounded by pristine walls. The Palace is enclosed within beautiful gardens. The architecture is a medley of Tudor style and Scottish style and has gothic undertones. A lot of physical artefacts inside are of British origin. It is said that the architecture of this building is inspired by that of the Windsor Castle and other architectural marvels of England and Normandy. The most prominent features of the Palace like the two-level granite structure of the fortified towers and turreted parapets take direct inspiration from the Tudor building styles. The entrance is decorated with grand Roman arches. The exterior of the building is covered in eccentric shapes and angles. The exterior walls are of a blushing cinnabar shade that gives the building a quaint Victorian vibe. The floor of the open courtyard of the Palace is adorned with granite seats covered with azure ceramic tiles. The ground floor also contains a beautifully decorated ballroom. The first floor of the Palace has a distinct chamber known as the Durbar Hall attached to an ornate staircase. This hall is famous for the enormous elephant head that is mounted in it and its gothic style tinted glass windows.

Tour Highlights

Itinerary details.

The itinerary as below is only suggested for your reference. You can choose to explore India in your own way. Just tell your travel advisor about your interests, requirements, and budget.

Your local guide and driver will escort you from the airport and transfer you to the hotel. The rest of the day is for you to spend as you wish.

Today, you will start your day by visiting the ancient Indian Buddhist art site — the Ajanta Caves. The drive will take about 2½–3 hours from Aurangabad. The Ajanta Caves are located in the Indian state of Maharashtra, facing Godavari River. The caves are famous for their mural art and represent one of India's unique artistic traditions known as rock-cut temples. Ajanta consists of 30 caves, filled with sculptures, wall murals, and ceiling paintings — all dedicated to the life of the Buddha.

In the morning, your guide will accompany you to the Ellora Caves — one of the best rock-cut temple cave complexes in the world. The temples were cut from basaltic cliffs and have elaborate facades and interior walls. The most famous among these is the Kailasa Temple in Cave 16. Unlike other temples at the site, which were first delved horizontally into the rock face, the Kailasa complex was excavated downward from a basaltic slope and is therefore largely exposed to sunlight.

You will take a flight to Mumbai in the afternoon, where your new guide will take you around the city.

Don't forget to visit the top tourist attraction in Mumbai — the Gateway of India. A prominent landmark in the city, the Gateway of India is a favorite gathering place for tourists and locals, bustling with photographers, tea vendors, and local food stalls.

Next, head off to the Prince of Wales Museum (now known as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya), which was built following a visit by the Prince of Wales to India in 1905. As you pass by Marine Drive, you will see Flora Fountain, which is a representative architecture of Mumbai.

Later, visit the Dhobi Ghat (Indian laundry), where you can see hundreds of people beat the dirt out of thousands of kilograms of soiled Mumbai clothes and linen in 1026 open-air troughs.

In the afternoon, you will visit Bollywood, or the center of Hindi cinema. It is one of the largest film production bases in the world. You will visit the Bollywood Museum, watch a dance show, see actors' makeup rooms, etc. If you are lucky, you may even see some live shoots and take pictures with stars.

Take a flight from Mumbai to Hubli in the morning, where you will meet your new driver who will transfer you to Hampi in about four hours. Once you reach Hampi, relax in the hotel.

Proceed to dig Indian treasure at Hampi — one of the most beautiful cities of the medieval world. There are two parts to Hampi: the Sacred Center and the Royal Center.

First, you will explore its Sacred Center, or, as it is popularly called, the Hampi Bazaar. Move on to visit Virupaksha Temple. The sculpture of Lord Shiva carved out of stone is the predominant feature of this spectacular temple. Built under the ruler Deva Raya II of the great Vijayanagara Empire, the temple is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Next, visit Hemakuta Hill, where you can enjoy the panorama of Virupaksha Temple. Don't miss the Vittala Temple for its unique architecture. Next, head off to Sule Bazaar, which was the most significant business center in ancient Hampi.

Next, discover Hampi's Royal Center. Enjoy the stunning carvings and a full view of the temple group in Mahanavami-diiba. Then head out to Zenana Enclosure, where you will see the Lotus Mahal. Climb up to the top to have a panoramic view of the 11 grand Elephant Stables. The most famous one is Queen's Bath, which will leave a lasting impact on you with its rich history and artistic carvings.

Your driver and guide will see you off at Hubli airport. Have a safe trip to your home.

South Indian Odyssey

Day 1 Tour Starts In Chennai (Madras) - Transfer To Mahabalipuram

south india group tours

The joining point of the trip will be at Chennai International Airport this morning, from where we will drive south along the shores of the Indian Ocean to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Mahabalipuram. The once great port city of the Pallava dynasty, Mahabalipuram can trace its ancestry back to the 7th century and is home to some 40 different monuments and temples, including the magnificent Shore Temple, one of the oldest stone buildings in India. This afternoon we take in some of the highlights of the area.

Day 2 Mahabalipuram

south india group tours

After breakfast we drive out to the city of Kanchipuram, on the banks of the Vegavathy River. An ancient centre of learning and a city of great importance historically to the Buddhists, Jains and Hindus, Kanchipuram lay at the heart of the Pallava, Chola and Vijayanagar Empires. One of the seven holiest Hindu cities in India, it has long been known as the city of a thousand temples and is renowned today for its saris, which are considered amongst the finest in India. Indeed, legend has it that the weavers of Kanchipuram are descended from the master weavers of the gods themselves. We also pay a visit to the heritage village of Dakshinachitra before returning to Mahabalipuram for our second night.

Day 3 Mahabalipuram - Gingee - Pondicherry

south india group tours

Heading inland slightly, we make for Tamil Nadu’s most spectacular fort at Gingee. Despite being protected by 20m thick walls in places, the fort was overrun on several occasions including in the 18th century by French and later British forces. We then head back to the coast to Pondicherry - a sophisticated city with strong French influences. Here you can sip a good French wine whilst looking out over the Indian Ocean. It is often referred to as the French Riviera of the East for its architecture and European ways, and as such provides a fascinating contrast to the rest of the state. On arrival we’ll take a short walk around town as well as an evening cycle rickshaw ride.  Driving distance 184km, 4 hours approx.

Day 4 Pondicherry - Kumbakonam

south india group tours

Departing Pondicherry, our journey takes us on to the pilgrimage city of Kumbakonam, a city that can date its origins back to the Sangam period of the 3rd century BC. En route we visit the Shiva temple of Chidambaram, as well as the 12th century Airavateswara Temple in Darasuram, a recognised World Heritage monument. Arriving in Kumbakonam later today we have a chance to explore this city of temples, a place renowned for its shrines and mathas (monasteries). There are some 188 Hindu temples within the city’s municipal limits, of which the Adi Kumbeswarar Temple is the oldest Shaiva (Shiva) shrine in the city.  Driving distance 140km, 4 hours approx.

Day 5 Kumbakonam - Karaikudi (Chettinadu)

south india group tours

Today we drive to the heritage town of Karaikudi, famous for its palatial limestone houses and its distinctive cuisine. The journey takes us via the superbly ornate Bridhadeswara Temple in Thanjavur, one of India’s most prized architectural sites. Part of the UNESCO World Heritage site “Great Living Chola Temples”, the granite temple dates back to the early years of the 11th century and boasts an impressive list of statistics. Its 66-metre-high temple tower is amongst the tallest of its kind anywhere in the world, whilst the Kumbam (the apex at the top of the temple) is carved from a single stone and weighs in at a hefty 80 tons. During archaeological digs at this impressive complex, many intricate bronze statues have been uncovered. The ancient art form of bronze statue making and gold painting continues today - a creative process that we will be able to see for ourselves at a short workshop.

Day 6 In & around Chettinadu

south india group tours

Surrounded by traditional villages, this region was once the homeland of the Nattukottai Chettiars, a prosperous banking and business community who left their stamp on the region in the form of a number of substantial mansions that still dot the landscape. We pay a visit to some of these 18th century palaces today; sumptuous creations in Italian marble and Burmese teak that were inspired by the grand houses of Europe. We also take time to explore a little of the traditional industry of the area, stopping to visit some Chettinadu cotton hand-looms and take a tour of the Aathangudi tile factory, whose beautiful designs and colours still hark back to a bygone age.

Day 7 Karaikudi (Chettinadu) - Madurai

south india group tours

Today we head into the cultural heartlands of the Tamil and Dravidian cultures. Our destination is the temple city of Madurai, a place that can trace its history back some 2,500 years. Laid out in the shape of a lotus along the flat, fertile plains of the Vaigai River valley, the city is built around the magnificent Sri Meenakshi Temple, a spectacular complex of towers, temples, courtyards and shrines that is considered one of India’s great cultural landmarks. We pay a visit to this spectacular 16th century temple today, as well as the Tirumalai Nayak Palace and Theppakulam. Later this evening we’ll enjoy an auto-rickshaw ride back to the temple to experience a traditional Puri ceremony.

Day 8 Madurai - Mysore (Overnight Train)

south india group tours

We will have time today to explore more of this most captivating of cities, home to the Gandhi Memorial Museum and a number of Hindu, Vishnu and Muslim temples and mosques. There will also be time to perhaps take a stroll through Madurai’s bustling streets, taking in some of its eclectic shops and bazaars, before heading to the railway station to take an overnight train all the way to Mysore in Karnataka.

Day 9 Mysore

south india group tours

This morning we arrive in Mysore, the stunning cultural capital of the Karnataka region, located at the base of the Chamundi Hills. Heading straight to our hotel, we have a little time to relax before an afternoon visit to the nearby town of Somanathapura, famed as the site of the 13th century Chennakesava Temple. Considered one of the finest examples of Hoysala architecture in India, the temple was built at the height of the Hoysala Empire and is richly carved with friezes, sculptures and intricate images from the Indian epics.

Day 10 Mysore

south india group tours

Long known for its festivals and palaces, Mysore can boast one of the most opulent and iconic buildings in southern India, the stunningly ornate Mysore Palace. Originally built in the 14th century, the palace of today is the result of a significant redesign by the British architect, Henry Irwin. A wonderful fusion of European and Indian influences, the palace is still the official residence of the Wodeyar dynasty, the royal family of Mysore. We take a walking tour around the city this morning, visiting the palace and the markets before driving out to the hills that surround the city. The Chamundi Hills are home to the impressive Sri Chamundeswari Temple and the sacred Nandi bull, one of the largest of its kind and carved from a single piece of rock. We’ll also stop off at the nearby impressive Srirangapatnam with its 18th century remains of Tipu Sultan’s fort, palace and mausoleum.

Day 11 Mysore - Kabini

south india group tours

Today’s journey takes us on to Kabini, our base on the edge of the Nagarahole National Park. This afternoon, once we have settled into our rooms, there will be the chance to head out on safari to spot some of the local wildlife that includes Asian Elephant, Samba Deer, Langur monkeys plus over 250 species of birds.

Day 12 Kabini - Calicut

south india group tours

Before breakfast this morning we will embark on another safari in the Nagarahole National Park in the hope that we may see tiger or leopard, the two species of big cat that are resident in the park. Later we depart for Calicut, across the border in Kerala, an important trading centre and the place where Vasco de Gama first set foot on the Indian Subcontinent in 1498. This evening should be a tour highlight as we visit a kalari (a special Keralan gymnasium) to witness kalaripayattu, a distinct martial arts discipline dating back over 1500 years.  Driving distance 138km, 4.5 hours approx.

Day 13 Calicut - Cheruthuruthy

south india group tours

Today we head south towards Cheruthuruthy on the Nila River. After a traditional lunch we will have the opportunity to meet some local artisans, including potters, weavers and toymakers. This evening there may be the opportunity to watch a performance of local folk song and dance.

Day 14 Cheruthuruthy - Kumarakom

south india group tours

We hope to make an early morning visit to a Kalamandalam – a performing arts centre - which prides itself on maintaining and teaching the great arts and traditions of Keralan society for which it is famed. We then drive south towards the famous Keralan backwaters and will spend the night in Kumarakum.  Driving distance 160km, 4 hours approx.

Days 15 - 16 Kumarakom - Alleppey - Backwaters of Kerala

south india group tours

This morning we drive to Alleppey to take to the waters of this most beautiful and unique of landscapes. Boarding our traditional houseboats, we will spend the next two days cruising the waterways and channels that honeycomb the coastal plains running parallel to the Arabian Sea. A unique ecosystem that is home to a rich variety of aquatic life, the backwaters present us with a time-honoured image of an India long forgotten, where scattered villages survive amongst the labyrinthine channels much as they have for generations. Kettuvallams (Keralan houseboats) once negotiated these canals carrying rice, grain and even royalty through the backwaters. Today they provide us with an ideal way to appreciate the tranquillity and tradition of this part of southern India. We’ll pass isolated communities and gardens of hibiscus and vegetables, hop off the boats to visit interesting sights en route, and spend our evenings moored up besides the lapping shores of these idyllic backwaters. Having two nights aboard our private chartered houseboats enables us to venture further into the backwaters to catch a glimpse of life rarely seen by foreign visitors to Kerala.

Day 17 Alleppey - Kochi (Cochin)

south india group tours

Disembarking our boats this morning, we drive to Kochi, the glittering ‘Queen of the Arabian Sea’. The oldest European settlement in India, Kochi is a vibrant mix of Arab, Chinese, European and Indian influences and home to the oldest church and synagogue in the country. Built on trade, the city began to prosper with the arrival of Jewish and Arab traders. With the later arrival of the Portuguese, and then the Dutch and English, Kochi went on to become a vibrant settlement, incorporating a rare fusion of European and Asian traditions and styles. This evening we will enjoy a sunset cruise on the harbour before learning to cook a traditional dinner with a local family.

Day 18 In Kochi (Cochin)

south india group tours

Today we will take a walking tour around the historic old streets of Fort Cochin and the red-tiled riverfront of Mattancherry, once the old capital’s main market area and the centre of the Malabar spice trade. The city is also famous for its Chinese fishing nets, as well as the Santa Cruz Basilica and the Church of St. Francis, where the body of Vasco de Gama was held before being returned to Portugal. Made from teak and bamboo, the huge cantilevered nets are a legacy of some of the earliest visitors to the Malabar Coast, whilst the 16th century Church of St. Francis has the distinction of being the oldest European church in India. After a free afternoon to enjoy some last minute retail therapy, we’ll enjoy our final dinner together tonight with a chance to reflect on our journey and experiences.

Supper with Neema & Tanjore

The best way to share stories and meet new people is over a plate of great food and a drink in hand. India is a diverse country, and this is reflected in the food. In Kochi, we will enjoy a cooking class at Neema’s home, which has been in the family for a hundred years. Supporting the local food industry in India not only maintains the cultural identity of India but connects cultures through the most ancient of pastimes, eating!

Bronze Workshop - Tanjore

Similarly, you will gain an insight into how the artisans of the past created bronze statues during a demonstration at a local workshop in Tanjore – still using ancient methods today. Visiting artisans not only provides income to them via providing the opportunity to sell their goods, but also ensures they are able to continue their craft and pass it onto future generations.

Reducing Single Use Plastic

We recognise the environmental issues and challenges around single-use plastic in many countries we visit and are actively working with our partners on the ground to reduce plastic waste on our tours and within the hotels and restaurants we visit. You can help to reduce your personal plastic waste by taking a refillable, filtered water bottle with you on your trip. Filtered water bottles can be refilled from water sources including your hotel room and restaurant taps, drinking fountains and refill stations. Every time you refill your bottle without the use of single-use plastic, you will be helping to reduce waste and protect the environment. IS THIS TRIP FOR ME?

It may sound obvious but Wild Frontiers tours are not always for everyone and it is important to us that the tour you choose is the most suitable. All our tours have a fitness rating as a guideline but you should check the day-by-day itinerary carefully. In certain instances we may ask you to complete a travel questionnaire before confirming your booking in order to ensure your suitability. Should you have any concerns about your ability to partake in any aspect of the tour then please contact the office.

KEY ASPECTS TO CONSIDER

Anyone in a reasonable state of health, with an open mind and a sense of adventure should be perfectly able to cope with this tour, as many of the activities are optional.

THE NATURE OF ADVENTURE TRAVEL

We feel that it’s worth pointing out that while we will always strive to stick as close to the stated itinerary as possible, it may be necessary from time to time to make changes to our itineraries or services (due to weather, political and religious influences etc.) and this can happen with little or no notice. This unpredictability can be one of the most exciting aspects of adventure travel and for many of our clients often leads to unexpected highlights as the tour-leader necessarily adapts the tour to the changing conditions. However we are aware that this lack of assuredness may not suit everyone. As such, with the greatest respect, if you are someone who needs to know that everything will happen exactly as planned, we would kindly suggest that perhaps our tours are not for you. Adventure travel can be infectious and once you’ve caught the bug, it is likely to never leave you, but especially if this is your first such tour we would strongly urge you to give us a call if you have any concerns whatsoever about your suitability for this trip.

TRAVELLING SOLO AND SINGLE SUPPLEMENTS

As a company approximately 70% of our clients are solo travellers, so it’s very unlikely you’ll be alone!

Our prices are typically based on twin-share accommodation, but single supplements are not compulsory for any Wild Frontiers tour. If you prefer not to pay a single supplement we’ll pair you with someone else of the same sex for you to share with throughout the trip.

On this trip, if you do opt to pay for a single supplement then please note that it will cover you for all nights of the tour apart from the overnight train.

Please note that paying a single supplement entitles you to lone occupancy of a single room. In many cases these rooms will be of the same size as a double/twin room, but in some cases they may be smaller.

Insurance that provides cover for emergency repatriation in case of a medical emergency is compulsory for all tours. You should be aware that due to some of the geographical areas visited and some of the activities included on certain of our trips some standard insurance policies may not always provide adequate cover. As such we strongly recommend that you purchase a policy that adequately covers your trip. Please see the Insurance section for more details.

what our clients say

We wanted an overview of South India and we certainly got that. The temples were marvelous. We saw so many wonderful things. Lakuma was a charming guide. She talked a lot about family life in India, which was interesting. She knew all the symbology of the deities and was familiar with the architecture and history. Often she would urge us to do something that she felt was special.

The itinerary was perfect, I loved the trip. Our guide was extraordinary, extremely knowledgeable and sensitive to our needs. I would hire this guide again

Frequently Asked Questions

How to plan south india tour.

A comprehensive South India tour that spans across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala typically extends beyond 20 days. Within this timeframe, it's possible to cover either the World Heritage sites of Karnataka and Kerala or delve into the temples and landscapes of Kerala alone.

Commencing the journey in Chennai and visiting Mahabalipuram, Pondicherry, Trichy, and Madurai, followed by exploration of Kerala's highlights such as Thekkady, Munnar, Kumarakom, and a leisurely stay of 3 to 4 days in either Kovalam or Marari Beach, shapes an exemplary South India tour. Direct flight connections from Europe, Malaysia, Singapore, and Australia to Chennai and Bangalore airports facilitate easy access, allowing travelers to commence the tour from either Chennai or Bangalore and conclude it at Cochin or Trivandrum airport.

How much Chennai to Kerala tour family packages by bus?

Regarding family packages for a bus tour from Chennai to Kerala, there are no such direct bus tour services available. Tour operators often curate customized tour packages, predominantly inclusive of private car services, which tend to be the most convenient option for families seeking a comprehensive tour experience.

When should I plan my trip to Kerala?

Kerala has three peak seasons, also known as tourist-friendly seasons; they range from September to March, April to May, and June to August. There are categorized as Peak season, Off-season, and Monsoon season. If you want to avoid the humidity and the monsoons, then you can plan your trip between September and March. This is because holiday destinations in south India have a comfortable climate, and there is little to no humidity. If you’re planning a family holiday as a part of a South India package, then ensure that you book it between September to March for the best experience.

Are cameras allowed inside the temples in South India?

When you take on the South India temple tour packages, especially temples, it’s a standard rule in most Hindu temples, which states that cameras are prohibited in the main prayer area. The temple authorities have the right to grant permits for photographs who want to take pictures on special occasions. You’re free to take pictures outside the main sanctum, but if you’re found clicking pictures inside the main sanctum, your device will be confiscated. Always ask the concerned authorities

India is a tropical country, and the South can be way more humid and hot than the north. So, if you’re planning to visit Kerala or Tamil Nadu during the peak seasons, then go for comfortable cotton clothes. Even though the cities are more tolerant of western wear, you should pack clothes that are respectful of the state’s culture.

Here are some of the essentials you have to pack for tourist places to visit in South India:

  • Long dresses or skirts
  • Caps or hats
  • Mosquito repellant
  • A hand towel

Is it safe for a woman to travel solo in South India?

If traveling by public trains and buses is not your cup of tea, then you can hire a reputed taxi service to take you from one place to another. Most parts of South India have good cell service unless you stay at hill stations. Ensure that you visit popular tourist destinations with the help of a reputed tourist guide.

Chettinad is the homeland of the Chettiars, a community of merchants who grew prosperous in the 19th century and spared no expense building huge palatial mansions. It has a very distinct character from the rest of Tamil Nadu and the style of cooking is unique to this area.

Approximate travel time and distance: 4 hours, 150 kms

This area is known for sightings of wildlife including elephants, Sambar deers and Indian bisons but nothing is guaranteed.

The rest of the day is at leisure to enjoy the hotel facilities including the gorgeous spa and swimming pool or maybe take part in some hotel activities. Alternatively enjoy some retail therapy in the nearby shops.

Today we leave the mountain region and travel past rubber and tea plantations to the picturesque village of Kumarakom, located on the south eastern shore of Vembanad Lake. There’s a tasty stop on route at a plantation bungalow in Kanjirapally where we are treated to a home cooked lunch

Kumarakom is an oasis of calm, hidden in the Kerala backwaters, a network of canals, lakes and coconut groves. The calm waters, verdant surroundings and abundant wildlife makes it the perfect spot to unwind. In the evening, simply relax and enjoy a sunset cruise over Vembanad Lake, where birds gliding across the calm surface of the lake can be spotted. The Coconut Lagoon is known for its cultural programme and there’s usually a performance to be enjoyed.

Approximate travel time and distance: 3.5 hours, 120 kms

Lunch, evening tea and dinner will be served on board by your own exclusive crew. At sunset the houseboat anchors to prevent getting tangled in the fishing nets. Experience a truly magical evening of being rocked gently whilst counting stars before finally going to bed. The air conditioning on board functions from 20:00 until 6:00.

On this afternoon’s sightseeing tour of Fort Cochin & Mattancherry, you can explore remnants of Cochin’s multicultural past by visiting St Francis’ Church and the local fish market. Later, proceed to Mattancherry to see the Jewish Synagogue and the Dutch Palace which houses murals depicting the Ramayana.

In the evening, you will witness a traditional Kathakali dance performance – we suggest arriving early if you want to experience the elaborate make-up preparation.

Approximate travel time and distance: 1 hour, 55 kms

Accommodation: fragrant nature fort cochin*, cochin.

This morning your tour includes a visit to the Kumbalanghi fishing village where you will experience traditional village activities such as catching fish, crab farming and coir making.

Following a home cooked lunch by the side of the backwaters you will be taken back to your hotel for some free time. You could relax and enjoy the hotel facilities such as the rooftop swimming pool, or maybe jump in a tuk tuk and explore the heritage quarter and pick up some last minute souveniers along Jew Street.

Another lovely memory will be this evening’s boat trip past Cochin’s waterfront. As the sun sets, you will see the famous cantilevered fishing nets. It’s fascinating to watch the fishermen skilfully dip the hammock-like nets into the water, silhouetted against the orange and pink sky. To round off an action packed day you can enjoy an interactive Keralan cooking demonstration and a farewell dinner with a local family.

In plenty of time you will be transferred to Cochin International Airport to board your return flight.

Introduction

This lively paced tour delves into the full range of sights and experiences unique to South India.

The diversity of South India is staggering. Every state speaks a distinct language and everywhere Hinduism manifests differently, in addition to vibrant Muslim and Christian communities. Physically, there are the extremes of the dry Deccan Plateau and the tropical Keralan backwaters.

On this tour you’ll visit a number of South India’s deservedly popular cities such as Mysore, Cochin and Pondicherry, while taking in some less commonly visited spots such as Hampi (one of India’s truly remarkable historical sites), Kumbakonam and Bandipur National Park.

The trip features a range of accommodation: charming B&Bs, a luxury wildlife resort and some special heritage hotels. Gentle walks, local activities and interaction make for an engaging and insightful experience.

Goa eases you into India. It has a laid back atmosphere, quiet beaches and delicious Portuguese-influenced cuisine.

You will be met on arrival and transferred to your accommodation in south Goa, Vivenda dos Palhacos. A lovely one hundred year old restored villa, located in the village of Majorda, the hotel is run by an English duo who stay on the property.  The front of the house is a modest Portuguese mansion, built in 1929; behind it the older Hindu house is made of thick-rammed earth walls.  The evocatively named rooms (Konnager, Alipore, Ballygunge, Chummery, Chanpara, etc) are all different – and all have fans, air-conditioners and en-suite bathrooms. At the back of the house there is a swimming pool, set in a tropical garden with private sun bathing areas. ([Image: Martin Frey].

Day 2 Hampi

This morning board an air-conditioned train bound for hospet. sit back and enjoy a cup of chai as the countryside rolls by, including some beautiful views as the train climbs into the western ghat mountain range..

You will be met on arrival and transferred to your accommodation, Uramma Cottages, located in the historical settlement of Anegundi.  Dating back to the 8th century, Anegundi is situated on the north shore of the majestic Tungabadra River directly across from the heart of the Hampi UNESCO World Heritage Site.  A unique eco friendly homestay experience, Uramma comprises seven charming cottages built in the traditional local style with thatched roofs; they are spread across a landscaped garden and farm, ensuring a quiet and restful stay within the bustling village life of Anegundi.

Day 3 Hampi

Spend today visiting the ruins in and around Hampi. Walk and auto rickshaw around the remarkable ruins of the ancient city of Vijayanagar which some claim is the world’s largest archaeological site. On its way to increased visitor numbers but still relatively unknown, this is one of the great ancient marvels of the world, in pristine condition, populated by no more than a few backpackers and banana farmers.

Day 4 Bangalore

Only on your second day in Hampi will you start to appreciate the magnitude of this once thriving city. Spend today exploring the most well-preserved and impressive remains.

Early this evening cross the river by coracle to have dinner in the Hampi Bazaar area, before driving to Hospet station to board an overnight train for Bangalore.

Day 5 Mysore

After arrival and breakfast in Bangalore drive 3 hours to Mysore.

The former capital of the region, Mysore was once led by a forward thinking Maharaja who gave the city electricity, universities and one of the most kitsch palaces you will ever see (half of which you can visit, the other half his descendants still live in). The city’s tree-lined avenues give it a laid back feel, while its bustling markets and central shopping area are great fun to explore.

If you are here on a Sunday, a visit to the palace in the evening is an absolute must: the 97,000 lights are switched on, which – along with the carnival atmosphere – make an awesomely illuminated scene.

Day 6 Mysore

Spend today sightseeing, beginning with a visit to the city’s most famous palace, the Maharajah’s Palace – an elaborate potpourri of Hindu, Islamic and Moorish styles.

Afterwards join throngs of Hindu pilgrims at Chamundi Hill – stopping at the Shiva Temple where devotees circumambulate the statue in a clockwise direction – and explore some of the smaller hilltop temples before returning to the city.

Of course, no trip to Mysore is complete without a wander through its lively Devaraja Market and a tour of its silk weaving and sandalwood oil centres.

Day 7 Bandipur

This morning drive approximately 3 hours through rolling fields punctuated with yellow sunflower patches, quaint village markets and forests, to Bandipur and your accommodation here, the secluded Windflower.  An eco resort, located very close to the Bandipur Forest Reserve, it strives to maintain the sanctity of the jungle environment and thus does not provide televisions in rooms and cannot guarantee mobile phone or Internet connectivity.

Bandipur, spread over an area of 874 square kilometres, is home to a wide range of wildlife, including the Four horned Antelope, Gaur, Asiatic Elephant, Leopard, Sloth bear, black napped hare, black leopard and a host of bird species such as the Barbet, Babbler, Warbler and the Indian Peafowl. It also has a small number of tigers – but don’t get your hopes up, sightings are rare.

This afternoon enjoy a safari through the national park in an open 4×4 jeep or Canter vehicle, accompanied by an experienced and knowledgeable driver and guide.

Day 8 Bandipur

Rise early this morning and, after a pot of chai, take another unforgettable jeep safari through the mist-laden national park. Return to the resort for a buffet breakfast spread in the open-air restaurant.

The afternoon is free to relax and enjoy your accommodation. Take a dip in the infinity pool, sit by the water’s edge at the Mangala reservoir, or indulge in an Ayurvedic treatment at the spa.

If you’re feeling more energetic, you can trek to a tribal community near Mangala village, and get a taste of local village life.

Spotting deer gathering at the reservoir at sundown makes for a lovely end to the day.

Day 9 Coonoor

After breakfast depart Bandipur for the 2 hour drive to Ooty, where you board the Nilgiri Mountain Train for the 19-kilometre ride to Coonoor, a small quiet town surrounded by hills and slopes of tea plantations. A slow, scenic journey, it passes over viaducts, through tunnels and across tall girder bridges in picturesque surroundings of rocky terrain, tea plantations, and forested hills.

On arrival you will be met and transferred to your accommodation – Tea Nest, a lovely mansion built in the 1800s, surrounded by lush tea gardens.  In this secluded and tranquil setting the house celebrates tea with its evocatively named rooms (Jasmine, Chamomile, Golden Tips, Lemon, etc); all are spacious and feature working fireplaces.

Day 10 Cochin

After breakfast begin the 6½-hour drive to Cochin and your accommodation in the historic Fort Kochi area of the city.

Fort Kochi has been in the hands of the Dutch, British, Portuguese and Chinese, with each having influenced the history and appearance of the Fort area in subtle yet unmistakable ways. With virtually no traffic, it’s the perfect place to explore by foot, or just relax and enjoy your heritage accommodation.

Day 11 Cochin

Spend this morning sightseeing with a local guide, including visits to the Dutch Palace, St Francis Church (India’s oldest church, built by Portuguese traders in 1503) and the iconic Chinese fishing nets.

This afternoon is free – the quiet streets around the Chinese fishing nets are filled with shops and restaurants, while a short auto-rickshaw ride away is Jewtown, which is full of antique shops and cafes.

This evening attend a Kathakali dance performance. Depicting the world of Hindu gods and demons these plays are based on the Mahabharata , Ramayana and Bhagavata Purana .  Heavily made-up and elaborately costumed men play both male and female roles.  Pay a visit to the dressing room before the performance to watch the colourful masks and makeup being applied (a process of several hours).

Day 12 Alleppey

Depart Cochin this morning for the 2-hour drive to Alleppey and your nearby accommodation, Green Palms. Idyllically situated on an island surrounded by rivers and rice fields, Green Palms is a homestay that affords a unique experience of the picturesque backwaters as you stay with a family and share their daily experiences on their property and in the wider community.

This afternoon enjoy a country boat trip through lovely palm-shaded canals and backwaters dotted with busy hamlets and lush green paddy fields.  Stop off at the local pub where you can sample the local “toddy” drink with the villagers.

Day 13 Alleppey

Green Palms organises eco-tourism activities that involve the local community.  Three activities are organised for you today.  Enjoy a leisurely walk along the river, canal banks and through the rice fields and learn about traditional methods of farming and harvesting. Also, take a slow bicycle ride along the smaller canal bank route that enables you to observe and experience village life. And, explore the nuances of traditional Keralan cuisine with a cooking class.

All activities are optional and you might find that after reaching Green Palms and settling in, you would prefer to take it easy with a book or do your own thing for the day.

Day 14 Madurai

After breakfast begin the 4½-hour drive up the steep ‘ghat road’ to Thekkady, where you break for lunch.  Afterwards you’ll have the opportunity to tour a spice plantation with a guide to see how well known spices such as cardamom, cloves, pepper and nutmeg grow, before resuming the journey to Madurai (a further 3½ hours drive).

Your first sight of the city of Madurai is likely to be the fourteen gateway towers called gopurams of the Meenakshi Temple which range in height from 45 to 50 metres, the tallest being the southern tower at 52 metres. This temple – the heart of Madurai – is a significant symbol for the Tamil people and attracts tens of thousands of Hindu pilgrims (as well as foreign tourists!).  [Image: Os Rupias].

Day 15 Madurai

This morning enjoy a 2-hour guided walk, ‘Vanakkam Madurai’. Created by local women to showcase the hidden charms of the city, it gives you an opportunity to hear about local life from a woman’s perspective and understand women’s roles in the family and community at large. Interact with local people, find out how their day dawns, what their livelihoods are and how they manage their families. Stroll through busy by-lanes, meet street vendors and observe how they do business; visit the flower and fruit markets, flanked by bananas, and gain an understanding of the challenges they face. Visit a pretty roadside salon and meet the local hairstylist.

The tour includes a wander down the age old ‘10 Pillar Street’; made of granite, these pillars are believed to be a part of the original grand entrance to the Rangavilasm, a now demolished portion of the Thirumalai Nayakar Mahal.  Today they stand tall amongst houses, huts, tea stalls, small shops, etc.  Here you can soak in 5,000-year-old legends!

Spend this afternoon sightseeing. Begin with a visit to the famous Meenakshi temple, probably the largest in India; its area, an approximate square, measures 245 by 228 metres and it contains a multitude of shrines, halls and colonnades – all teeming with colour, noise and people.

Afterwards visit the 17th century Nayak Palace – although only a quarter survives, it is still evocative of the splendour of the Nayak rule in Madurai. You also have the option to visit the insightful Gandhi Museum, which gives an overview of the Mahatma’s life through a variety of memorabilia.  You may like to spend some time at the bustling tailors’ market, which is great for sharpening your bargaining skills and stocking up on gifts for friends and family at home.

Day 16 Kumbakonam

In the morning drive 5 hours to Kumbakonam, making a stop en route at Tanjore.

Tanjore is dominated by the UNESCO World Heritage listed Brihadeeswara temple, where an 80 tonne piece of granite crowns the 60 metre high central vimana or tower. Your guide will explain the complex system of ramps and wheels used to construct the temple more than a thousand years ago.

After a short tour, continue on for one-hour to your resort-style hotel in Kumbakonam, which features traditional Tamil architecture.  The food here is a standout, especially the traditional south India ‘thali’ meal, served on a banana leaf. The lovely pool and sitting areas make for a very pleasant and relaxing afternoon.

Day 17 Pondicherry

Drive 4 hours to Pondicherry this morning.

Originally an 18th century French colony, this now bustling city – although very much Indian – represents the final bastion of French influence in India, particularly in the old quarters, with Rues and Boulevards lined with Mediterranean style houses and patisseries.

Check in to your hotel on arrival and the afternoon is free to relax and stroll through the quiet streets around the French quarter.

Day 18 Pondicherry

After breakfast – perhaps of croissants and coffee – set out for a morning of sightseeing.  Explore the heritage area and visit the Aurobindo Ashram – a peaceful place despite the thousands of visitors it attracts – and the Aurobindo Paper Factory, where you can observe the process of making handmade paper – and perhaps buy some last minute gifts.

The afternoon is at leisure.  You may like to indulge in some of the activities Pondicherry is known for – eating, drinking and shopping – and end the day with an evening stroll along the beachside promenade.

Day 19 Chennai

After breakfast you have a short drive up the coast to Chennai, with a stop en route to visit the 7th century UNESCO World Heritage listed monuments at Mahabalipuram.

Afterwards continue on to the airport for your flight home.

Lucy Cain

My Husband & I and our 8 year old son visited India for the first time. We reached out to a dozen travel companies but were most impressed how Indian Expeditions interacted with us.  We got immediate email response to our questions giving clear advice and information about the options available to us and were also offered a free tour place for our son. We chose the Essential South India journey.

The tour was absolutely fabulous and we got to see and experience so many things we definitely couldn’t have by ourselves. The itinerary itself is not rushed, and instead of trying to cram everything in, focuses on just the right things. We have a very hard time trying to pick out which day was the best – every day was just fantastic. Travel time is well thought off, the resorts we stayed in excellent, the food just incredible.

Chandan is a great guide and along with all his excellent historical knowledge about the places we visited gave us a wonderful insight into life in India.

I would highly recommend this tour.

Faith Augustus

An INCREDIBLY well organised trip, with an EXCEPTIONAL guide. Me and my two teenaged sons loved every minute of our adventure. And it was an adventure for sure – watching tigers in the wild, cooking with locals, helping out in a farm – just INCREDIBLE. My sons have learnt SO much from the trip and now want to pursue careers in history – that was how well the complex, ancient history of the region was bought alive to all of us on the Essential South India tour. We have been on many guided trips, but never enjoyed any as much as we did this one. Thank you Chandan and Indian Expeditions. You are all so wonderful. We will be back!

Indian Expeditions Comprehensive South India is most certainly an excellent way to travel and enjoy this wonderful part of India. It encompasses both the history and iconic religious sites to fantastic landscapes and getaways as well as allowing you to get close to the very friendly and interesting people who live there. You will be sure to both learn much of the fascinating country and be able to immerse yourself both in the vast history, present and the wonderfully diverse countryside and coastlines. A very well organised trip with an excellent group of travel companions.

John Trevor

An incredible trip, much better than we expected and without a doubt we have the best guide of all the trips we have ever been on – Seetharam.  The South India trip really has a brilliant mixture of history, culture, nature, beach and backwaters. I can’t believe we did and saw so much in this magical 14 days. The trip was extremely well organised from start to finish and the group we travelled with were all like minded and fun. We will keep coming back to do more trips with Indian Expeditions and recommend them to all my friends who’d like to visit India.

Brad Cooper

We had a fantastic time with Indian Expeditions and Chandan as our tour leader on a 14 day tour of the region. Chandan’s knowledge of the area and expertise were invaluable. On top of that, he was laid back and easy to talk to, all the while accommodating our unique expectations and special requirements as well as others in group. He also leveraged his connections to secure the best possible experiences everywhere we visited. In contrast, we did use another company while we were in Northern India and they were not nearly as good. It seemed like their primary goal was to get us in front of the merchants that they probably get kickbacks from. Indian Expeditions was not like that at all. It was like having a group of local showing us around.
