The series premiere was written by Akiva Goldsman with the story by Akiva Goldsman, Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet. Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers serve as co-showrunners, with Goldsman directing the premiere episode. Goldsman, Kurtzman and Lumet serve as executive producers in addition to Alonso Myers, Heather Kadin, Frank Siracusa, John Weber, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth and Aaron Baiers. Star Trek: The Original Motion Picture 6-Movie Collection Review: The definitive TOS film release has arrived

star trek 6 trailer

Star Trek: The Original Motion Picture 6-Movie Collection

For the past year, fans have enjoyed the first four Star Trek films on 4K in high-dynamic range (HDR) thanks to The Original 4-Movie Collection . That release marked the first time those movies were available on the top-tier home media format that is 4K/HDR, and we called it the definitive way to watch those movies. But, as they say, good things come to those who wait. One year to the day after that four-movie collection was released, Paramount Home Entertainment has unleashed what is now, for sure, without a doubt, the definitive Original Series movie collection: Star Trek: The Original Motion Picture 6-Movie Collection.

What’s in the box?

Forgetting the wordy name, bundled in this impressive box set are the first six Star Trek feature films. Excitingly, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country marks their debut in 4K/HDR with this release. Fans everywhere will be overjoyed at seeing some of the most important moments in Star Trek , such as Spock toasting a marshmellen or Kirk wrestling with himself, in all the fidelity 4K/HDR offers!

Star Trek: 6-Movie Collection

Let’s get the main contents of the box set out of the way:

  • Additional Blu-ray with bonus content
  • Star Trek: The Motion Picture (Theatrical Cut)  – Ultra HD & Blu-ray
  • Includes  Director’s Cut (as released in 2016)
  • Star Trek III: The Search for Spock  – Ultra HD & Blu-ray
  • Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home  – Ultra HD & Blu-ray
  • Star Trek V: The Final Frontier  – Ultra HD & Blu-ray
  • Includes  Director’s Cut (as released in 2004)

Importantly, The Motion Picture – The Director’s Edition included in this release is the remastered version that was released earlier this year only on Paramount+. You can check out our interview with producer David C. Fein about what it took to bring this impressive version of the classic movie to life.

This box set also includes digital copies of all six films, as well as 1080p Blu-ray counterparts. Remember, you can only watch these movies in 4K/HDR if you have a 4K/HDR-capable TV and a 4K/HDR Blu-ray player. Game consoles such as the Xbox One X, Xbox Series S/X, and PlayStation 5 will play 4K/HDR discs.

(A side note: what did Walter Koenig or George Takai ever do to Paramount? Theirs are the only faces not seen on the covers of both the four-movie and six-movie collections outside the case!)

Special Features

Yes, there are also a plethora of extras – basically all the previously released special features, and a few new items – so please get comfy as we list them all.

Video Quality

Does the video quality of these movies stand up to high expectations? They sure do! (For context, we watched these movies on an LG C2 OLED television). We already know the theatrical cut of Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan look fantastic in 4K/HDR thanks to last year’s release, and it’s safe to say the transfers of Star Trek V and VI from 1080p, which was the highest resolution available before today, to 4K is striking. It’s four times the number of pixels, after all. And the addition of color-boosting high dynamic range, which resolves a film’s colors in more natural quality, is the icing on the cake. If you haven’t seen these movies in a while, now is the perfect time to rewatch them. Likewise, newer fans who haven’t had the opportunity to see these classic movies now can do so in the most modern way possible.

A major attraction of this set is the inclusion of the recently released The Motion Picture – The Director’s Edition, which is itself a thorough remaster of 2001’s The Motion Picture – Director’s Edition, which added new VFX and trimmed scenes to make the movie flow more nicely. Before today, this remastered The Motion Picture – Director’s Edition was only available via Paramount+. No more! The inherent visual benefits of on-disc playback compared to streaming make this disc-based The Motion Picture – Director’s Edition an incredible treat for fans. We already knew an astonishing amount of time and effort went into making the 2022 version of The Motion Picture , and now the work of David C. Fein and his team can be seen in all its glory. Watch this one on the biggest screen possible.

(If you’re a Motion Picture superfan, there is a special, more elaborate release dedicated solely to this movie that includes a multitude of extras, including the first-ever widescreen presentation of the Special Longer Version of Star Trek: The Motion Picture , originally created for broadcast television in 1983.)

We want to take a moment to note our experience with The Final Frontier. That movie, released in 1989, is famous (or infamous) for less-than-ideal visual effects, even compared to its predecessors. If you see this movie in 4K/HDR, some scenes, like the journey across the Great Barrier or Sybok’s introduction in the desert, will look fabulous, with bright, vivid colors that show off landscapes and the creative but lower-budget visual effects done by Associates and Ferren.

On the flip side, some of the bad VFX, like some orbiting shots of the Enterprise or Kirk battling God, will look particularly bad thanks to the higher resolution and lack of any remastering work like The Motion Picture – Director’s Edition. Of course, that’s not a reason to skip what’s objectively the best Star Trek movie (especially considering Strange New Worlds seems to be inspired by the film ), just a heads-up that you should expect to see some ugliness. Star Trek V is really the only TOS film with this problem, as the beautiful model-heavy VFX done by Industrial Light and Magic for every other Star Trek movie other than The Motion Picture look fantastic in this collection. You’ll want to sell your old Star Trek movie discs, that’s for sure.

Star Trek: 6-Movie Collection (2022) vs. Star Trek: 4-Movie Collection (2021)

But I bought the Four-Movie Collection last year!

A quick note for those a little angsty about buying the four-movie collection last year, only for the six-movie collection to come out this year: we understand your pain. But just know each of these movies has its own standalone release. So, if you have the four-movie collection, you could buy Star Trek V and Star Trek IV individually to complete your TOS -era movie collection. Just know The Motion Picture included in last year’s collection was the theatrical cut only, and not the recently remastered Director’s Edition. You can get the remastered Director’s Edition individually here .

The fact that Paramount Home Entertainment is double-dipping with releasing a partial Star Trek movie collection last year only to release a complete collection this year is understandably frustrating for consumers. (The salt on the wound is that the six-movie collection and the four-movie collection share almost the same box art, albeit with a dark background for the newer collection along with a few new elements to reflect the additional movies.) The individual Blu-ray releases help soften the blow a bit, but we still must question why the back-to-back releases. Sure, they were probably trying to hit a sales mark by releasing the incomplete TOS movie collection last year, and perhaps the Star Trek V and VI transfers weren’t completed yet, but this release schedule likely just makes fans weary of any future movie collections Paramount wants to sell. We would have liked to see a discount given to verified owners of the four-movie collection, but alas…

What does a Star Trek fan need with this box set?

There’s no beating around the bush: if you are someone who values the disc-based video quality upgrade over streaming, and the ownership stability that comes with home media, there’s no reason not to get this collection. Not only does this set include every TOS movie and all available director’s editions, along with every extra feature under the sun, but these decades-old films will look as best they can if you have the necessary hardware. It’ll make the perfect addition to your home media cabinet, and the Star Trek fan in your life will thank you. It’ll certainly satisfy us media hounds until Paramount releases a TNG movie collection, which surely must be in the works.

The 6 Original Star Trek Movie Trailers

Compare JJ Abram's Trek trailer to the originals

In case you somehow missed it, the new trailer for JJ Abram's reboot of Star Trek has been finally been unveiled. And it's different, to say the least.

To illustrate how different it is, we've compiled the original theatrical trailers for every one of the classic movies. Spanning 1979 to 1991, some of them seem dated, some of them miss the mark and some of them are just plain awesome, but every one feels like Star Trek.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

"...this is the return of Captain Kirk," says the voice over artist in a fashion not dissimilar to Shatner's unique delivery, and boy does it feel like it. The movie might have been a let down, but this trailer almost makes up for it.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)

Ironically, the much improved second movie has a trailer worse than the first movie. Heavy on the action and light on the plot, but it gains points for realising Kirk's scream of his adversaries name is Shatner's career high point.

Star Trek III: The Search For Spock (1984)

Paramount's marketing department finally starts to find its footing, using Star Trek music and focusing on Kirk's humour, the crew and the stakes of their situation. It's actually cut much like a contemporary trailer too, which helps.

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986)

And so Star Trek enters the era of every Hollywood ad conveying the plot of the entire movie. A brilliant trailer for a brilliant movie, but there's no real point in seeing the movie after watching it.

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989)

Shatner's directorial effort was a much-troubled production and consequently a muddled movie. Looking at the trailer though, you wouldn't think it.

It wisely avoids mentioning the ridiculous God subplot that taints the finished project and instead concentrates on the relationships and characters that had become more integral to the series than any story could ever be.

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991)

The last original movie... and the best trailer by far. George Lucas himself couldn't have cut together a more perfectly balanced ad, highlighting the story, themes, characters and action in equal measure.

Interview: Wilson Cruz On How “Jinaal” Sets Up The Rest Of The Season For Culber On ‘Star Trek: Discovery’

Oh, for crying out loud… another sci-fi take on Groundhog’s Day. That is SUCH a cliche. It’s been done so many times.

That, and Discovery already did a time loop episode all the way back in its first season. Don’t recall the episode name, but I do recall it involved Lorca getting killed and then the ship would blow up.

I don’t know. I’m not entirely opposed to the idea, but… eh.

Yeah it’s the Harry Mudd episode from season 1 again although I will point out that’s my favorite episode in season 1 to this day.

So I’m a little excited about it but yeah it’s been done over again and again in sci fi (pun intended).

I do miss these types of stories in Star Trek but I understand why it’s different for others.

The Harry Mudd time loop episode was a good one. I think this one will be different though as it seems, in the preview, that they are going to random points in time.

Ah good point! I’m more excited about it now.

My favorite episode of the show to date, so ditto.

Wow cool. There are a few episodes I like more but can safely say it’s somewhere in my top 5.

Having watched it, it is not a time loop episode. At all. This reaction was premature.

The episode preview shows the original Discovery uniforms. Will this possibly have the tie-in to Calypso?

Looks like it will be an exciting episode.

Yes! I was just thinking the same thing. And the fact that they flash to San Francisco. I have a feeling that Discovery is going to reset its own timeline, which is why they’re being so hush hush with Starfleet Academy, and why it will take place on Earth.

Wondering if this episode somehow explains the events of Calypso — they need to abandon the ship for some reason in a possible future. (wouldn’t explain the registration change to 1031-A) but might be that Calypso takes place in a POSSIBLE Disco future.

Calypso was one of Zora’s dreams.

Oooo…. I like that!

“Face the Strange New Worlds.”

Let’s do an odd crossover, hah.

Looks interesting, which I don’t often say about Discovery.

This one looks good and the advance review I read suggests it’s the best of the season so far.

Yes I read the same! Really looking forward to it.

Lets do the time loop again? It’s just a mycelium jump to the left!

I watched it early this morning. Spoiler Free!! A great bottle show. They build on their OWN canon and we get a neat surprise (character-wise) Raynham and Burnham have some character development. My fav so far, this season.

Worked late so I could watch when it came on. Very strong and entertaining!

LOL at “Raynham.”

Someday, I hope SMG comes to learn that whispering is not always a valid acting choice.

You understand that actors follow the instructions of the script and director right? Because that is where the instruction to whisper usually comes from.

Did your complaint have any basis beyond criticizing an actor you dislike for doing her job? That makes as much sense as the people who blamed Jessica Alba for being nude in both Fantastic Four films. When that was in the script at the insistence of the director and is cited by Alba as one of the main reasons she quit acting.

Oh and don’t tell me no one ever said that about Alba. I saw it first hand right here in Trekmovie comment sections. The “discussion” involved a poster called Rose Pinenut.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Lower Decks

“ Star Trek : Strange New Worlds,” currently in production on its third season, has been renewed by Paramount+ for Season 4. Meanwhile, “ Star Trek: Lower Decks ,” the first animated “Star Trek” comedy, will conclude its run on the streamer with its fifth season, which will debut in the fall.

Popular on Variety

“Lower Decks” charted brand new territory for “Star Trek” when it debuted in 2020, as both an animated comedy and a series that focused on the junior officers of the USS Cerritos: Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid), D’Vana Tendi (Noël Wells) and Sam Rutherford (Eugene Cordero). Set in the years following the feature film “Star Trek: Nemesis,” the series has included voice cameos from many beloved “Star Trek” alumni, like George Takei, Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, John de Lancie, Will Wheaton, Armin Shimerman, Nana Visitor and Robert Duncan McNeill.

Given its premise, concluding “Lower Decks” make sense considering the main four characters all received promotions in Season 4. But in a message to fans, Kurtzman and executive producer and showrunner Mike McMahan left the turbolift doors open for continuing the characters’ stories following their time at the bottom of the Starfleet pecking order.

The “Star Trek” TV universe, overseen by Kurtzman through his Secret Hideout production company and produced by CBS Studios, has enjoyed a robust expansion since “Star Trek: Discovery” first premiered in 2017. Along with “Strange New Worlds,” the made-for-television movie “Star Trek: Section 31” recently concluded production with star Michelle Yeoh, and the new series “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” will begin shooting later this year.

“It has been incredibly rewarding to continue to build the Star Trek universe, and we’re so grateful to Secret Hideout and our immensely talented casts and producers,” said Jeff Grossman, executive vice president of Programming at Paramount+. “‘Strange New Worlds’ has found the perfect blend of action, adventure and humor. Similarly, ‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’ has brought the laughs with an ample amount of heart to the franchise across its four seasons. We can’t wait for audiences to see what is in store for the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos in this final season.”

“‘Lower Decks’ and ‘Strange New Worlds’ are integral to the ‘Star Trek’ franchise, expanding the boundaries of the universe and exploring new and exciting worlds,” said CBS Studios president David Stapf. “We are extraordinarily proud of both series as they honor the legacy of what Gene Roddenberry created almost 60 years ago. We are so grateful to work with Secret Hideout, Alex Kurtzman, Mike McMahan, Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers and the cast, crews and artists who craft these important and entertaining stories for fans around the world.”

First 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Season 2 Trailer Takes the USS Enterprise to Such Great Heights

Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, and Ethan Peck return alongside the ensemble cast for 'Strange New Worlds' Season 2 this summer.

Paramount+ has finally released the first teaser trailer for Season 2 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , and it looks like the crew of the USS Enterprise are ready for their next great adventure. Strange New Worlds is a prequel to the original Star Trek series, following Captain Christopher Pike ( Anson Mount ) and his crew of both established Trek characters and new faces as they boldly go where no one has gone before.

In the new footage, released today, we're treated to a new voiceover from Number One, Una Chin-Riley ( Rebecca Romijn ) highlighting the unity of Starfleet's beloved found families going on their own journeys together, which is echoed by Uhura ( Celia Rose Gooding ) saying she never feels alone on the Enterprise. Set to a stunningly cinematic version of "Such Great Heights" by The Postal Service , we get just a taste of the wonder ahead in Season 2. It looks like Una is reinstated in Starfleet fairly quickly, following her arrest in the Season 1 finale. Though the new footage doesn't give any indication as to how Pike gets her back on the ship we can assume that one of his rallying, awe-inspiring speeches may come into play. We also get a closer look at Carol Kane , who'll be playing Pelia , the new Chief Engineer filling the gap left by the loss of Bruce Horack 's Hemmer.

Strange New Worlds brings back Star Trek' s episodic format that dominated the franchise's offerings of the 90s and early 2000s. In the new teaser trailer, we also get a lot of humor, with Erica Ortegas ( Melissa Navia ) shooting a hole through an asteroid in order to fly the ship through it, Spock ( Ethan Peck ) not having a cool Captain's chair catchphrase, and Kirk ( Paul Wesley ) not understanding how revolving doors work. We also get a hint of a possible romance between Nurse Chapel ( Jess Bush ) and Doctor M'Benga ( Babs Olusanmokun ) as well as the lingering tension between Chapel and Spock, and some heated looks between Kirk and La'an ( Christina Chong ).

What to Expect From Season 2 of Strange New Worlds

While little has been revealed about each episode's specific plot or the overall arc of Season 2, there are a lot of exciting teases to look forward to when the show returns this summer. The new footage shows Spock drinking with Klingons, breathtaking alien worlds, and an abundance of emotional character moments. We can also look forward to the highly anticipated crossover with Star Trek 's adult animated series Lower Decks , with Tawny Newsome and Jack Quaid making guest appearances as Ensigns Becket t Mariner and Brad Boimler. The episode will feature a mix of live-action and animation and will be directed by none other than Star Trek legend Jonathan Frakes .

Strange New Worlds returns on June 15 and it has already been renewed for Season 3 . While we wait for the show's return you can catch up on the third and final season of Star Trek: Picard right now on Paramount+. Check out the first Strange New Worlds teaser trailer down below.

Renewed tv series 2024: a photo gallery.

“Our incredible cast, crew and artists have given you everything they have because they love the characters they play, they love the world we’ve built, and more than anything we all love love love Star Trek. We’re excited for the world to see our hilarious fifth season which we’re working on right now, and the good news is that all previous episodes will remain on Paramount+ so there is still so much to look forward to as we celebrate the Cerritos crew with a big send-off,” they added.

Star Trek: Lower Decks is an animated comedy series following the support crew serving on one of Starfleet’s least important ships, the U.S.S. Cerritos. The crew residing in the “lower decks” of the U.S.S. Cerritos includes the voices of Tawny Newsome, Jack Quaid, Noël Wells and Eugene Cordero; the bridge crew is voiced by Dawnn Lewis, Jerry O’Connell, Fred Tatasciore and Gillian Vigman.

The series is produced by CBS’ Eye Animation Productions, CBS Studios’ animation arm; Secret Hideout; and Roddenberry Entertainment. Executive producers include Alex Kurtzman, Mike McMahan, Aaron Baiers, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth. Titmouse serves as the animation studio for the series which streams exclusively on Paramount+ in the U.S. and Latin America and is distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution.

It stars Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, Ethan Peck, Jess Bush, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Melissa Navia and Babs Olusanmokun, along with special guest stars Paul Wesley and Carol Kane. The series is produced by CBS Studios, Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment. Alex Kurtzman, Akiva Goldsman, Jenny Lumet, Henry Alonso Myers, Aaron Baiers, Dana Horgan, Davy Perez, Frank Siracusa, John Weber, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth serve as executive producers.

“On behalf of the cast and crew of Strange New Worlds, we are thrilled and grateful to continue our voyages together. We can’t wait for you to join us and the crew of the Enterprise on another season of exploration and adventure,” said Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers and Alex Kurtzman in a statement.

The expanded world of Star Trek on Paramount+ also includes the fifth and final season of Star Trek : Discovery, currently airing; the original film Star Trek : Section 31 starring Michelle Yeoh, which recently wrapped production; and the new original series Star Trek : Starfleet Academy, slated to begin production later this year.

I came to yuck yuck near 1/4 of these shows – strange reality spin-offs, why?

Then, I saw Elsbeth shuttled to Fridays. This ‘year’ of scripted tv has been so rote and dry, why abandon possible gems (even where they shine familiar)?

CBS you recycle and reform as the norm. NBC will shatter without wolf and ABC is lowering the Shonda mast (you see what happens there?)

  • Trivia When the cast decided to lobby for a salary increase, Wil Wheaton 's first offer from the producers was to instead have his character promoted to Lieutenant. His response was, "So what should I tell my landlord when I can't pay my rent? 'Don't worry, I just made Lieutenant'?!"
  • Goofs It is claimed that Data can't use contractions (Can't, Isn't, Don't, etc) yet there are several instances throughout the series where he does. One of the first such examples is heard in Encounter at Farpoint (1987) , where Data uses the word "Can't" while the Enterprise is being chased by Q's "ship".

Capt. Picard : Engage!

  • Crazy credits The model of the Enterprise used in the opening credits is so detailed, a tiny figure can be seen walking past a window just before the vessel jumps to warp speed.
  • Alternate versions The first and last episodes were originally broadcast as two-hour TV movies, and were later re-edited into two one-hour episodes each. Both edits involved removing some scenes from each episode.
  • Connections Edited into Reading Rainbow: The Bionic Bunny Show (1988)
