Here, the full power of the Pacific comes to rest on vast sandy beaches. Ancient forests calm the spirit with mist and mystery. Quiet inlets ripple with life.

Situated within the traditional territory of the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation, we’re surrounded by the breathtaking expanse of the UNESCO Clayoquot Sound Biosphere Region—cherished for its profound biodiversity.

We savour our acclaimed food scene and delight in the creativity of the coastal arts community, while treading softly and sharing respect for all who call Tofino home.

Because here, everything is connected. And, just like Tofitians, you’ll want to get up early to take it all in.

Captain & Owner Jens Kalwa

Growing up on the East Coast of Vancouver Island and on the water since he was 13 years old, Jens knows the ocean like the back of his hand. "learning from my father how to drive boats, catch fish and behave around ocean wildlife, was the start to my big interest in everything that involved the ocean. It became my passion to be in or on the water wether it was surfing and getting to know the changes of ocean swells and tides or being on the boat to observe marine wildlife". He made his passion to his Career in the year of 2007 when he moved to Tofino and started Adventure Tofino Wildlife Tours. With so many larger tour operators already established in Tofino, my goal was to provide a different wildlife experience for my guests, tours in smaller groups and with a more personal touch. "Right from the start I received great support. Friends which already worked in Tofino as tour guides would share their knowledge with me and people who liked what I was offering would sent their guests my way. This was a very positive start and I am very thankful for that".

Now with two boats in operation and with the support of a small team of great people, I am excited that together we can let people from all over the world be part of this adventure."

Captain Jeffrey Warden

Jeff joined our team in 2018 after guiding tours in Tofino's waters since 2016. Jeff is a real adventurer with a great personality and a huge love for the ocean and  wildlife.

When you are on a tour with Jeff and you listen to how he talks about the animals, with passion and in his deep and calm voice, you just don't want to stop listening!

His love for the ocean makes him want to be on, in and above it. He loves scuba diving,  flying airplanes and skydiving.

When Jeff is not on the water he is in 10000ft hight skydiving over Long beach and spotting whales from up there as a Tandem Instructor from Point Break Skydiving in Tofino.

Captain Jordan Koroll

Jordan was born and raised in a beautiful small lakeside town in Central Ontario, Canada. From an early age, watersports were an avid passion of his and through his travels wildlife became a great focus in his life. He paired the two by studying an Honors Bachelor of Health Sciences with a specialization in mammalian anatomy, physiology and biomechanics.

His inquisitive nature and deep passion for both the cultural and natural history of many areas of the world have allowed him to guide in some incredible places. Bouncing from Canada’s Sub-Arctic with the King of the North’s beautiful polar bears, to the ends of the earth guiding kayak expeditions around the Antarctic continent. Jordan always looks forward to heading back to BC’s beautiful West Coast for the summer seasons. The Pacific Northwest wildlife draws him back time and time again, but when he is not skippering on the water you can find him running along the local trails, enjoying a nice early morning paddle, or sipping a delicious cup of coffee in town.

Our two boats "Azonic" and "Guardian 2" which we use for all of our tours are open 26 ft Zodiacs which take up to 12 passengers.

Timberwolf Hiking and Kayaking on Vancouver Island: This was a well-organised and enjoyable tour. We were a group of 9, mostly single travellers, of different nationalities and ages. Our tour guide worked very hard, with both practical tasks, such as driving and organising meals and equipment, and in making sure participants had a fun and safe time. The kayaking with camp on the remote island was brilliant. It wasn't a relaxing holiday but it was great to be outdoors and active and was a fantastic experience. Definitely recommended.

Amazing tour with great, memorable stops and experiences throughout! Sabio and Megan were both great and handled everything extremely professionally. They went out of their way to ensure we had a great time. Also, the way they handled and maintained complete professionalism when dealing with one difficult person in our group was commendable. Absolutely no complaints!

What Our Guests Have To Say About Their Jamie's Experience

Jamie's Whaling Station & Adventure Centres

We are a family of 8 plus a baby and had a great experience on our day trip to the hot springs. The customer service from the front desk staff was excellent and they answered all our questions and booked us in easily. Chris was our captain on the 12 passenger covered vessel and did a fantastic job throughout the day. He was friendly, informative and ensured we knew plenty about the surroundings and the local wildlife. We saw lots of whales, enjoyed the hot springs and had a relaxing trip!

The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable about the bears. We encountered so much wildlife and saw 5 bears including a mother and her cub. The boat was comfortable and safe, the staff on the boat were very friendly and even shared some brilliant photos of the animals they had taken on our trip! Definitely worth every penny to see these beautiful creatures in the wild.

We went on a whale watching tour and saw a mama and baby gray whale and a humpback whale. The captain and guides were very informative. The guides took the time to approach all the guests to talk to them and share some facts. They went out of their way to make my 5 year old comfortable on the boat and also knew my oldest was big into birds so pointed out the different kinds of birds along the way. Great experience. We would definitely book a tour with them again!

We had a great trip bear-watching with our young children. Our captain and guide were friendly, professional, and informative. They were enthusiastic and keen to point out all kinds of wildlife. They showed a real love of the area and it was great to see the beautiful coastline from a different perspective. We saw loads of bears feeding along the shoreline. The boat stayed a reasonable distance from the bears so as not to disturb them, and our guides had a real respect for the animals. A very memorable experience!

What an incredible, once in a lifetime experience! We were very impressed with how much our guides knew and how they respected the ocean and its creatures. We got to see some humpback whales and grey whale. And if that wasn’t enough we spent almost half an hour watching a beautiful humpback whale breach over and over again! We couldn’t have asked for a better experience. You guys have officially ruined whale watching for us because you have set the bar so high on our first whale watching trip ever! Thank you for everything!

17 Best Things to Do in Tofino

With seemingly endless sandy beaches, rainforest hiking trails, natural hot springs, dreamy sunsets, and the best surfing in all of Canada… it’s hard to not fall in love with Tofino, BC.

Located on Vancouver Island’s western edge, Tofino is a small town that packs a big punch when it comes to natural coastal beauty. If you’re looking for fun things to do on the island, Tofino is one of the best places to head — especially if you love being outdoors!

Tofino captured our hearts from the moment that we first visited. We live in Victoria so we’re used to beaches — but Tofino is just something else. We keep going back every year because it’s just so beautiful!

From surfing some of the best waves in Canada to exploring the massive Pacific Rim National Park, there’s never a shortage of top things to do in the West Coast paradise of Tofino.

Below, we cover the best things to do and see, must-see attractions, and hidden gems in Tofino, BC. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveler, our guide will help you find the most unforgettable experiences in this stunning coastal town. Get ready to fall in love with Tofino, one of the most beautiful destinations in all of Canada!

Best Things to Do in Tofino

1. surf the waves.

A surfer carrying their surfboard as the sun sets in Tofino

Known as Canada’s surfing capital, Tofino is famous for having some of the best cold-water waves in the world.

Tofino’s reputation is well-deserved: the beach break waves here are consistently good year-round and the sandy beaches are massive and forgiving to wipeouts. Plus, there are surfing opportunities for every skill level, from the beginner-friendly waves of North Chesterman Beach to massive winter swells at Cox Bay.

Surfers from all over the globe travel to Tofino to ride the world-renowned waves at Cox Bay Beach or surf at the massive Long Beach in Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. When visiting Tofino, surfing is definitely one of the best things to do — you don’t want to miss out on this fun-filled experience!

Don’t worry if you’ve never surfed a day in your life, though — there are plenty of surf schools ready to teach you the ropes. Beginners have plenty of gentle waves and whitewash to practice on. Also, there are lots of spots to rent a surfboard and wetsuit if you don’t own your own cold-water surf gear .

Some of the most popular surf spots in Tofino are Cox Bay, Chesterman Beach, and Long Beach. All of these beaches are incredibly beautiful and offer excellent beach break waves that’ll have you out on the water until the sun goes down.

For those wanting to stay as close as possible to the surf, we recommend staying at Pacific Sands Beach Resort or Long Beach Lodge Resort . Both hotels are right on Cox Bay Beach so you can enjoy direct access to the ocean!

2. Relax at Hot Springs Cove

Hot Springs Cove is a must-visit for anyone seeking relaxation while experiencing the natural beauty of the West Coast.

With a number of geothermal pools surrounded by rugged coastal rock and lush rainforest, Hot Springs Cove near Tofino features some of the most beautiful naturally heated pools in all of Canada!

These geothermal hot springs are located in Maquinna Marine Provincial Park, northwest of Tofino by 27 nautical miles. To get there, you either need to take a 1.5 hour boat ride or 20 minute seaplane flight — or combine the two for a fantastic “Sea to Sky” experience!

When you arrive at Hot Springs Cove, you’ll have a 1.5-km walk along a rainforest boardwalk to reach the hot springs. Once there, choose between seven different pools that vary in temperatures, from the hot inland springs to the cooler oceanside pools.

A breathtaking place to visit, Hot Springs Cove is definitely worth a visit from Tofino. Remote and rustic, these half-day tours provide an unforgettable experience!

3. Go Storm Watching

A woman in a yellow raincoat standing on the rocks by the waves in Tofino

Storm watching is one of the best things to do in winter in Tofino.

From October to March, powerful storms regularly roll in off the Pacific Ocean, hammering the exposed coastline between Tofino and Ucluelet with epic, gigantic waves. Many people visit Tofino in winter just to watch these impressive displays of nature’s power.

The best way to experience these storms is from the comfort of a cozy hotel room with an ocean view. Here are some of Tofino’s best hotels for storm watching !

Not staying at an oceanfront hotel? You can safely watch storms from the observation deck at the K w isitis Visitor Centre on Wickaninnish Beach. Or, put on some rain gear and brave the stormy weather with a walk on Cox Bay, Chesterman, or Long Beaches.

The winter weather in Tofino can be unpredictable… but that’s part of the appeal! There’s something exhilarating about being out in the elements and feeling the power of the storm. Just be sure to stay away from the water when the waves are high!

4. Walk Long Beach in Pacific Rim National Park

A woman walking in the surf of Wickaninnish Beach in Tofino, with ocean mist

Expansive and beautiful, Long Beach is one of the crown jewels of Vancouver Island’s western coast. Part of the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, Long Beach is a must-see destination in Tofino.

As the name implies, Long Beach holds the title for the longest beach in all of Vancouver Island. The Long Beach Unit, which includes Schooner Cove, Wickaninnish, Combers, and Florencia Bay, spans over 16 kilometers!

Want to take a long walk on the beach? Head to Long Beach! The beach truly feels endless — perfect for those who love walking alongside the ocean.

For an 8-km adventure, walk between Incinerator Rock and Green Point on Long Beach. Along the way, stop to watch the surfers, go beachcombing, or sit on some driftwood and take in the beauty of the white sand, ocean mist, and waves.

The beach where Tofino’s surf culture was born, Long Beach is also quite popular for surfing in summer. Also, if you’re lucky, you can score a campsite at Green Point Campground to stay close to the waves!

5. Hike the Cox Bay Lookout Trail

The Cox Bay Lookout Trail is a hidden gem and one of our favorite spots to visit in Tofino.

Starting at Cox Bay Beach, this hiking trail is unmarked, muddy, and almost straight uphill — so why the heck do we consider it one of the best things to do in Tofino?!

Well, at the top of the Cox Bay Lookout, you’ll find some of the most spectacular views in all of Tofino. Trust us, these views really can’t be beat!

The Cox Bay Lookout offers panoramic views of the crescent-shaped Cox Bay Beach, the Esowista Peninsula, Clayoquot Sound, and beyond. You’ll even be able to watch the waves roll in to Cox Bay from far out in the ocean!

You’ll need a good pair of hiking boots and determination to get to the top of this short but steep 2.6-km trail — but it’s oh-so-worth it!

6. Go on a Whale Watching Tour

Tofino is a great place to go whale watching!

For an unforgettable experience, join one of the whale watching tours departing from Tofino daily, from March through October. You’ll have the opportunity to spot some incredible marine animals in their natural Pacific Ocean habitats.

From huge humpbacks to the iconic orcas, there are many whale species to spot around Tofino. Transient orcas hunt seals in the waters of the Clayoquot Sound. In spring, thousands of grey whales (over 20,000!) migrate past Vancouver Island, on their long journey to Alaska. Later, through the summer, about 6,000 humpback whales also swim through Tofino’s waters.

With some luck, you might also see smaller cetaceans, like harbour porpoises and Pacific white-sided dolphins. And, there’s a myriad of other marine species in the area so you’re bound to see other animals like sea lions, harbour seals, sea otters, and seabirds like tufted puffins and bald eagles.

The wildlife viewing tours cruise around the ocean in a zodiac, open, or closed boat to find the whales. They usually have a guarantee to see whales, with a 95% success rate. You may even be able to see the whales breach or spy hop out of the water!

7. Hike to the Canso Plane Crash

The Canso Bomber plane crash site in Tofino

Hiking to the Canso Plane Crash Site is one of the most unique things to do in Tofino .

In 1945, a Royal Canadian Air Force Canso 11007 plane crashed into the forest near Tofino after its engine failed. Despite carrying explosives, everyone on the flight survived.

Now, the crash site is a popular spot to visit and explore the ruins of the old WW2 plane. Despite how long ago the crash was, the plane’s remains are surprisingly intact!

The hiking trail for the Canso Bomber crash site starts near Radar Hill. Make sure to stop at the first parking lot that’s close to the highway (don’t go all the way to Radar Hill). Then, you’ll follow the multi-use pathway south along the Pacific Rim Highway until you find a trail that heads into the forest.

On the way to the crash site, you’ll come across an abandoned building. If you’re brave, you can walk through it — or go around it, if you don’t feel comfortable!

The path then takes you into a bog — this is where the trail gets muddy! But soon, you’ll spot your first glimpse of the plane. You can go right up the plane and explore the crash site!

8. Explore the Town of Tofino

A floatplane at a dock in Tofino

With its distinct bohemian feel and laid-back atmosphere, exploring the town of Tofino is a must-do when visiting this beautiful coastal destination.

Walking through Tofino’s quaint streets, you’ll discover an array of eclectic shops, cafes, art galleries, and restaurants — all with a surfer vibe, of course. While the town isn’t too big, there’s lots to see and plenty of things to do!

Those looking for a bite to eat can indulge in fresh seafood and other delicious local dishes at one of the town’s amazing restaurants. Souvenir stores scattered through town offer visitors the chance to take home a piece of Tofino’s laid-back lifestyle.

For any art enthusiasts visiting Tofino, the Roy Henry Vickers Gallery is one of the best places to check out. Designed like a traditional Northwest Coast longhouse with a painted eagle on its façade, this beautiful gallery really stands out from the rest of town. Inside, you’ll find the stunning works of renowned Canadian artist, Roy Henry Vickers, as well as other West Coast artists.

After exploring the gallery, continue your adventure to the marina, which is always buzzing with boats of all sizes coming and going.

Those wishing to explore further can book tours from town that’ll take you out onto the water for wildlife viewing, relaxation at hot springs cove, fishing adventures, or a visit to Meares Island. For a breathtaking view of the coastline, try one of the floatplane tours!

9. Eat at the Original Tacofino Food Truck

The colorful tacos from the original Tacofino food truck in Tofino

The original Tacofino — a Mexico-inspired restaurant with a West Coast feel — is unsurprisingly located in Tofino. In our opinion, any trip to this surf town is incomplete without stopping at this quirky eatery.

You’ll find the original restaurant based out of a food truck that’s absolutely plastered in stickers and parked in the back corner of a surf shop parking lot. To us, the entire experience just screams authentic surf town vibes.

While famous for its fish tacos, Tacofino offers a variety of other delicious tacos and menu items, such as burritos and gringas (like a large fried/grilled taco-turned-quesadilla).

When we visit, I almost always get the beef and vegan tacos, while my partner enjoys the tuna ta taco or vegan burrito. No matter what you get, you’ll probably enjoy it though!

Complete with only a few outdoor picnic tables, Tacofino is more of a takeout-style dining experience. It’s perfect for grabbing a bite to eat at the nearby Chesterman Beach or one of the other beautiful beaches around Tofino.

An incredibly popular place to eat, the line at Tacofino does get pretty long at times. Be prepared for a bit of a wait. But we guarantee it’s worth it!

10. Kayak the Broken Group Islands

Part of the Pacific Rim National Park, the Broken Group Islands are one of the most breathtaking spots to go kayaking in all of Canada.

Beautiful and remote, the Broken Group Islands are a cluster of over 100 islands between Ucluelet and Bamfield. The ocean around the inner islands is sheltered and calm, offering incredible sea kayaking opportunities through awe-inspiring marine wilderness.

Kayaking the Broken Group Islands requires planning and experience. You can paddle from Secret Beach in Toquart Bay, take a water taxi from Ucluelet, or go as part of a guided kayaking tour.

Want to explore the Broken Group but don’t feel like you have enough experience? Join this 3-day Broken Group Islands kayaking tour ! You don’t need much experience and they supply the kayak gear, camping equipment, and food. Starting from Ucluelet, your guide will take you safely through these magical and remote islands for a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

For those who aren’t quite ready for a full expedition to the Broken Group Islands, try one of the easier paddling locations around Tofino. We recommend the calm waters of the Tofino Harbour or try this guided Ucluelet Harbour kayaking tour .

11. Join a Bear Watching Tour

Watching a bear forage along the beach in Tofino

Did you know that Tofino is a great place to spot black bears?

From April to October, join a bear-watching tour to see wild black bears along the shoreline of the Clayoquot Sound.

Bear watching tours are about 2.5 hours long. You can choose to go in an open or semi-closed boat.

During low tide, the black bears emerge from the rainforest to feed on crabs, fish, and other marine foods. The tours are timed with the tides to give you the best opportunity to see bears. You might also spot other wildlife along the way, like whales, or if you’re lucky, sea wolves!

Even if you don’t go on a tour, there’s a chance you’ll see bears in the wilderness around Tofino and Ucluelet. We’ve seen them on the edge of Wickaninnish Beach, foraging among the rocks. It’s a good idea to bring bear spray when you’re going on hikes!

If you visit Tofino in fall, you might also spot black bears fishing for salmon at the Thornton Creek Hatchery near Ucluelet. The best time for spotting bears at the hatchery is during October.

12. Walk the Tonquin Trail

Looking for an easy but rewarding walk around Tofino? Try the Tonquin Trail!

Only 3 km long, this coastal hiking trail is well worth the effort. Despite its length, the trail stops at multiple beaches and offers breathtaking ocean views along the way!

Starting right in town, the Tonquin Trail winds through the lush rainforest and along the stunning coastline. The path takes you to the sandy Tonquin Beach, followed by the smaller Third Beach. For those willing to go a bit further, the trail was also extended in 2017, now crossing Tla-o-qui-aht traditional territory to the beautiful Middle Beach.

The Tonquin Trail is well-maintained and easy to follow, making it fairly accessible for all levels of hikers (there are some stairs though). Most of the trail is gravel through the forest, but there are boardwalks and viewpoints. There is parking for the trail at the Tofino Community Hall.

13. Watch the Sunset on North Chesterman Beach

The orange sunset over Wickaninnish Island from North Chesterman Beach in Tofino

Our favorite way to end a day of fun in Tofino is by watching the sunset on North Chesterman Beach.

Sunset absolutely transforms the coast, with the sun casting its last golden rays over the ocean and turning everything into hues of reds, oranges, and pinks. Combined with the soothing sound of the waves and the gentle sea breeze, it’s a truly magical experience!

We highly recommend bringing a blanket, snacks, and something to drink to fully enjoy this special moment. You can also warm up around a beach fire here — just follow these rules . And, if you enjoy surfing, you can even catch a few last waves as the sun sets!

North Chesterman Beach is not the only place to catch the sunset around Tofino. The town is full of other great spots to watch the sun go down.

Head to Cox Bay or Long Beach to watch surfers catch their last waves of the day while the sun sets behind them. MacKenzie or Middle Beach also are spectacular sunset-watching spots (we loved watching the sunsets from the balcony at Middle Beach Lodge ).

For those closer to Ukee, catch the last rays of the day at Wickaninnish Beach or Florencia Bay!

14. Camp at Green Point Campground

Camping in Tofino is a treat. There’s nothing like falling asleep to the sounds of waves as you’re cozy in your sleeping bag .

For those traveling on a budget, camping is a good way to make a vacation in Tofino more affordable, too.

The best place to go camping in Tofino is Green Point Campground. It’s the only campground along Long Beach in Pacific Rim National Park.

Located on an oceanside bluff, Green Point offers excellent access to Long Beach and Combers Beach. It’s the perfect place to stay if you want to spend lots of time surfing or exploring the beach!

Green Point Campground is open from May to mid-October. There are 94 drive-in sites, 20 walk-in, 1 group walk-in, and 1 Parks Canada oTENTik site.

Reservations are highly recommended. The campground is quite busy through most of the summer!

15. Visit the K w isitis Visitor Centre on Wickaninnish Beach

The Kwisitis Visitor Centre on Wickaninnish Beach in Tofino's Pacific Rim National Park Reserve

Standing on the edge of the sprawling Wickaninnish Beach, the K w isitis Visitor Centre is a magnificent sight to behold.

From its unrivaled vantage point, the centre features unobstructed views of the expansive Pacific Ocean. Moreover, the K w isitis Visitor Centre offers an exhilarating storm-watching experience , with its observation deck providing a front-row seat to witness the dramatic waves crashing onto the shore.

Inside, you’ll find that the educational facility is a treasure trove of information about the rich cultural heritage and natural wonders of Tofino and Ucluelet. Best of all, it’s free to visit!

Learn about the history and culture of the Nuu-chah-nulth peoples, with stories and replicas of a First Nations longhouse and traditional whale hunt. Get your photo in front of a whale tail, and learn how to identify the tracks of some of Tofino’s animals, like bears, wolves, and cougars. There’s also a First Nations Gift Shop and restaurant.

Note: The inside of the K w isitis Visitor Centre is currently closed due to infrastructure upgrades, but the outdoor observation deck is still open. Click here for details .

16. Water Taxi to Meares Island

Just off the northwest coast of the peninsula, Meares Island forms the beautiful backdrop to Tofino. From this scenic island, the peaks of Lone Cone and Mount Colnett rise above the waters of the Clayoquot Sound.

Opitsaht — a small Tla-o-qui-aht community — sits on the southwest end of Meares Island. Due to the conservation efforts of the Nuu-chah-nulth peoples in the “ War of the Woods ” against old-growth logging, the island is covered in undeveloped rainforest and home to some of BC’s oldest Red Cedar trees!

Visitors can take a water taxi to explore the beautiful Meares Island. The water taxi ride itself is short (only about 10 minutes long) but exciting! You’ll start from the Tofino Harbour, passing by ecologically-important mudflats and some of the many small islands that dot the Clayoquot Sound.

Once you arrive on Meares Island, we highly recommend checking out Big Tree Trail. This walking trail features some of the oldest trees in British Columbia. Don’t miss the Hanging Garden tree, a massive Western Red Cedar that’s over 2,000 years old!

For those seeking a more challenging adventure, the hike up Lone Cone is a must-do. The 3.6-kilometer trail takes hikers through old-growth forest and up to the summit of the mountain, offering panoramic views of Tofino, Vargas Island, and the Clayoquot Sound.

Note: The Lone Cone Hike is currently closed indefinitely. Check here for details!

17. Explore Ucluelet

The Ucluelet lighthouse behind the tree on the Wild Pacific Trail

One of the best things to add to your Tofino itinerary is a visit to Ucluelet , the small fishing village south of Tofino.

Known as Ukee by locals, Ucluelet is only separated from Tofino by 40 kilometers (25 miles). You can drive between the two towns in about 30 to 40 minutes. There’s even a multi-use pathway to bike between Tofino and Ucluelet, if you don’t have a vehicle!

While Tofino is the most famous of the two towns, Ucluelet is still pretty amazing and worth a visit. Ukee boasts a more laid-back atmosphere than its neighbor Tofino and has plenty of fun things to do .

One of the must-visit attractions is the Wild Pacific Trail, a stunning 8-km (5-mile) trail showcasing much of Ucluelet’s coastline. Along with breathtaking ocean views, the trail takes you through ancient Sitka spruce and giant red cedar forests, along beautiful beaches, and past the charming Amphitrite Lighthouse.

Ukee is also nearby the beautiful Florencia Bay and Wickaninnish Beach in Pacific Rim National Park. We really enjoy heading to Florencia Bay for some sunbathing!

Top Travel Tips & Resources for Tofino, BC

  • Travel Insurance – If you’re travelling internationally, travel insurance is a must for any trip. Being covered by insurance is especially important when you’re going to an adventure-filled place like British Columbia. If you injure yourself while adventuring, you want to have insurance! We recommend using SafetyWing for international travel insurance. They are affordable and have great policies for travellers, digital nomads, and remote workers. Also, SafetyWing provides COVID-19 coverage, which many other insurance companies don’t cover.
  • Car Rental – We find the best deal on vehicle rental prices using RentalCars.com . They compare the prices for different car rental companies so you can find the best deals.
  • Accommodations – We prefer booking all of our hotels, hostels, and other accommodations through Booking.com because they have a flexible cancellation policy. Also, there are lots of different options on their platform, from hotels to vacation homes. Alternatively, Expedia and Hotels.com are good for booking accommodations. For vacation home rentals, VRBO is an excellent choice (they have lower fees than Airbnb, many of the same properties, and are more ethical).
  • Flights – You’ll find many good flight deals on Skyscanner or Google Flights. You can book flights through these websites and they’ll help you find the best prices and flight times. If you fly at less popular times (e.g. mid-week or red-eye flights), you can also save some money.

Best Things to Do in Tofino, BC

Wondering what to do in Tofino? Tofino is one of the great outdoor playgrounds in Western Canada! In this guide, we have tried to cover all of the best Tofino activities and we are confident there is something for everybody on this list.

Surfing in Tofino

Tofino is renowned for its icy cold waves and laid-back surf culture. What better way to enjoy your time here than hopping in to the Pacific Ocean to ride some waves? Pull on a wetsuit (and depending on the time of year – booties, gloves and a hood) and enjoy catching some waves at some of the best surfing beaches in Tofino . The most popular beaches to surf here are:

  • Long Beach
  • Chesterman Beach

You can rent gear from any of the local surf shop and Surf Sisters even has a rental shop right at Cox Bay. Due to its prime location, Surf Sisters is slightly more expensive but you can also rent from other local shops such as Pacific Surf Co right in town for only $45-50 for a full day for both a surfboard and wetsuit rental.

If you have never surfed before or are still a beginner, why not take a surfing lesson in Tofino to help get you up on your feet and riding some waves. There are plenty of surf schools in Tofino that you can join for a group lesson or if you are really keen, try taking a private lesson.

Visit Hot Springs Cove Tofino

Update 2022: Due to continued concerns regarding the spread of Covid-19, The hot springs remains closed until further notice. We will update this page as soon as we hea r more .

There are plenty of epic day trips to choose from, but a trip to the hot springs is a top Tofino attraction. It is a 1.5-hour boat ride to reach the hot springs near Tofino and this boat trip is almost worth the money by itself. You’ll skim through the waters of Clayoquot Sound, passing tons of tiny islands and getting incredible views of the surrounding landscapes.

Consider this a 2-for-1 tour as you will look for whales both to and from the hot springs and it is quite common to see grey whales and humpbacks. You’ll also get the chance to see bears, wolves, sea otters and eagles on the boat ride.

Once you arrive at the dock for the hot springs it is a 30-minute walk through a beautiful old growth forest along a wooden boardwalk.  You’ll likely smell the sulphur of the hot springs before you see them as you eventually emerge from the forest to the springs which are located right by the ocean.

Enjoy a couple of hours soaking in the hot water and numerous pools. The water flows over the edge of a rock, creating the ultimate, all natural, hot outdoor shower. The top pool is the warmest and the water cools down the closer it gets to the ocean.

If you can , visit at low tide. During high tide, the waves can crash up into the bottom pool and if you’re sitting in here, you’ll get a shock as the freezing water flows in. There are many tour companies to choose from but we recommend  Ocean Outfitters . They offer a great service, are carbon neutral and continually fund conservation efforts in the local area.

Bear Watching in Tofino

Jump on a boat and explore the inner waterways of Clayoquot Sound as you go bear watching in Tofino. The local black bears in Tofino come down to the water’s edge at low tide to look for food. It’s awesome to watch them from the water as they slowly patrol the beaches, tossing rocks aside with their big paws in the hunt for food.

The local guides know exactly where to look and bear sightings are almost guaranteed. It’s really cool to see them in their natural habitat and they pay little to no attention to your boat. While bears are the main attraction, you’ll also get to enjoy some beautiful scenery while also keeping an eye out for sea otters, seals, wolves and eagles. Ocean Outfitters are also our go to for Bear tours in Tofino.

Bear watching Tofino

Fuel up at Rhino Coffee Tofino

Start your day off right by stopping in at Rhino Tofino for a killer cup of coffee and to grab breakfast on the go. While it feels crazy to list a specific cafe as a thing to do in Tofino, this locale is such a Tofino staple that it deserves to be a stand-alone Tofino attraction.

The staff are all so friendly and they offer a wide range of options if you aren’t a coffee lover. Add on a breakfast wrap or sandwich, house-baked donut, or our personal favourite, a chocolate brownie and you are ready for a day of exploring.

This is a go-to spot in Tofino as you can see by the number of people always milling about. When we lived in Tofino, Rhino was a breakfast staple for us and a trip wouldn’t be complete without a visit! You’ll find Rhino Coffee House right in the centre of town on Campbell Street.

Hike Cox Bay Trail

This might just be our absolute favourite thing to do in Tofino and we hike this trail almost every time we visit. It’s one of best hikes in Tofino . The viewpoint at the top gives you unbelievable 360-degree views of the surrounding landscapes. The best view is looking back towards the town of Tofino as you see all the way along Cox Bay and Chesterman Beach, as well as over to Lonecone Mountain and the islands on the far side of Tofino.

For the small amount of effort you have to put in to complete this hike, the payoff in terms of views is ridiculous!

The trailhead is located at the south end of Cox Bay, one of the best beaches in Tofino. It isn’t an official trail so it isn’t well marked but at the end of the beach where the sand meets the treeline, look for an opening with a small stream with a beaten earth path next to it.

This trail is muddy all year round , no matter what the weather has been like, so be prepared to get a bit dirty. We promise the views at the top are totally worth it. The climb isn’t too difficult and only takes about 30-minutes from the trailhead at the end of the beach. There is one slightly trickier section where there is a rope to help you up but otherwise, we would consider it easy/moderate.

Once at the top, you’ll get what we think is one of the best views in Western Canada, not just Tofino. You could spend ages up here watching the surfers below and admiring the beautiful scenery. Even though it’s one of the best Tofino hikes, there are never too many people up here which always blows my mind.

You can also follow the trail through the trees to the other side of the lookout where you can look south down towards Ucluelet. Once you have had your fill, you can follow the same trail back down to the beach.

Hiking to Cox Bay lookout will take around 2 hours round trip , if you are leaving from the parking lot at Cox Bay beach. While there are several hikes near Tofino this is one of the top things to do in Tofino that cannot be missed.

Cox Bay Trail, Tofino, Vancouver Island

Sea Kayaking Tofino

The inner waters of Clayoquot Sound are a wonderful maze of islands and waterways. While a boat tour is a great way to see slightly further afield, a kayak tour is the ultimate way to explore the waters just off of Tofino. When kayaking in Tofino we recommend going with  Paddle West Kayaking , which is based out of a tiny hut next to Jamie’s Whaling Station on the edge of town.

This is who we went with and they provide all the equipment you need and their guides are brilliant. They know everything there is to know about the wildlife and the ecosystem around here and they had loads of cool stories and answered all of our questions.

You can choose either a single or double kayak, but if you are going for a few hours as we did, we recommend a double kayak as you’ll cover a lot of ground. You’ll paddle straight out from shore and get to travel right passed many of the islands and even through some tiny hidden waterways. You’ll also get a chance to sample some of the local kelp which isn’t delicious, but we were assured it was nutritious.

Keep an eye out for wildlife as you paddle around as the guides have an eagle eye for spotting animals. You may end up with some sore shoulders by the ends of it but getting to see a different perspective of this amazing place is totally worth it.

Go Shopping and Visit the Galleries

Downtown Tofino BC is home to many boutique shops selling local goods, crafts and art. It’s always so impressive to see how many talented people live in this small corner of the earth but the quirky town of Tofino seems to attract creative and expressive people.

The nice thing about the shops in Tofino is they are not full of tacky souvenirs. Instead, they stock high-quality products from the local people.

There are plenty of cool places to check out when shopping in Tofino but one of our favourite little shops is Caravan Beach Shop . It’s only big enough for a handful of people to fit in at a time, but they stock a great selection of things from clothes, to local photographers’ prints, to funky camp equipment.

On our most recent trip to Tofino, we discovered Merge , a shop with Canadian-made goods including clothes, home decor, and self-care. The brightly coloured pink shop is definitely worth a visit!

If you want to take some incredible photos home with you then check out Jeremy Koreski and Kyler Vos’s studios. They are both local photographers and during their time spent living here have managed to capture some amazing images of the scenery and especially the local wildlife.

The Roy Henry Vickers Gallery is another cool spot with First Nations art made by long-time local Roy Henry Vickers. He even built the building his gallery is in with some of his friends.

Due to the surf culture here, there are also a few surf shops, all of which stock their own branded clothing as well as selling other brands and surf equipment. Storm Surf Shop Tofino and Pacific Surf Co. can both be found in Tofino town centre while Live to Surf Tofino is found a few minutes’ drive from town. While there are so many awesome shops, our favourite local merchandise comes from Tofino Brewing Co!

Fishing in Tofino, BC

With such a vibrant underwater world it’s no surprise that people travel from all over the world to get out on the water and go fishing. Tofino has a vibrant fishing scene for both locals and visitors. If you really want the full experience then you’ll need to take one of the many fishing charters Tofino has to offer.

You can go for half-day or full-day excursions and your local skipper will be able to take you to all the best spots depending on exactly what type of fish you are looking for. As well as getting to fish in some of the best waters in the world, you’ll also get amazing views as you travel passed the islands to your destination, plus you’re likely to see some wildlife on the journey.

Fishing enthusiasts should check out the Hatch at Tofino Resort + Marina for happy hour drink and to watch all of the fishing charters return for the day. There is a large scale at the end of the docks, which the patio overlooks, where proud fishermen come to weigh their catch at the end of the day.

Enjoy Some of the Best Restaurants in Tofino, BC

For such a small town, it always blows our minds how there can be so many incredible places to eat in Tofino. Foodies will find themselves in paradise when they visit here. Tofino is home to our favourite restaurant of all time as well as world-famous chefs, some of whom have appeared on Master Chef and they have access to the freshest ingredients right on their doorstep.

Here is a list of some of the best places to eat in Tofino:

  • Shelter Restaurant Tofino –  This is our favourite restaurant in the world. Period. The food is absolutely delicious and it also has a great atmosphere. Sit outside on the patio under one of the heaters. They just make simple and delicious food and never once have we been disappointed and we have eaten here A LOT! They also serve frozen daquiris which are the perfect way to finish off an epic day of exploring. Definitely the best food in Tofino.
  • Sobo Restaurant Tofino –  Sobo offers grassroots gourmet cuisine that focuses on wild, foraged and local ingredients. Their menu is mostly seafood and they source almost everything from local, independent businesses.
  • Wolf in the Fog –  The food here is great but it is actually the cocktails and drinks that led us to put Wolf in the Fog on the list. They have a huge range of speciality spirits and a killer cocktail menu. The upstairs bar is a great place to sit and watch the bartenders mix up a storm.
  • The Pointe Tofino –  If you are looking for a special fine dining experience, head to The Pointe Restaurant in the Wickaninnish Inn. It has spectacular views over the Pacific Ocean, a sophisticated menu featuring contemporary dishes inspired by fresh, local seasonal ingredients and they have an extensive wine selection so you’ll always have the perfect pairing.

Explore the Best Beaches in Tofino, BC

Tofino is home to some incredibly unique beaches. While it may not be the usual white sand and blue water combination that often make beaches so attractive, the beaches near Tofino have more rugged beauty about them where tall trees meet cold seas.

You’ll be spoilt for choice during your visit here and you could spend your whole trip hopping between the different beaches.

Long Beach –  A   20-minute drive from the town centre will take you to Long Beach. As the name suggests it is a long stretch of sand but one of the things that makes it special is Incinerator Rock, which sits a few metres off shore at the northern end of the beach. You can also surf along this beach as well. It is part of Pacific Rim National Park so you have to pay to use either of the parking lots here.

Cox Bay –  The most popular beach in Tofino for surfers, you’ll find consistent waves here and a large stretch of sand to relax and enjoy the sun. It’s usually quite busy here but the beach is so large that you can find a quiet spot to yourself very easily. Explore the rocky coves at the north end of the beach or hike to the Cox Bay Lookout  at the south end of the beach.

Chesterman Beach –  Another of the popular surfing beaches in Tofino. Chesterman Beach is cool as there is a point in the middle of the beach that you can walk out along and be surrounded by the water on both sides.

Tonquin Beach –  Follow a trail through the forest down to Tonquin Beach. This beach is right on the edge of town so it is very easy to get to. We often find it to be one of the quieter beaches and the short walk through the forest makes you feel like you are a million miles from the town of Tofino.

Best beaches in Tofino

Whale Watching

The waters along the West Coast of Canada are teeming with whales. You may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of whales from one of the beaches but to really get the full experience you can go on a whale watching tour.

Orcas are the type of whale that most people want to see, but they are transient to these waters so there is no guarantee you will catch a glimpse of them. Grey and Humpback whales are much more common in these waters and it’s fantastic to see them swimming in such a beautiful setting.

There are a wide range of tour operators and boats to choose from. You can head out on an open-air zodiac , to get the full experience of wind rushing through your hair, or if you would prefer something more comfortable you can take a covered boat instead . Our go-to tour operator for the best whale watching in Tofino is Ocean Outfitters.

Eat at Tacofino

I know we had a dedicated section to restaurants in Tofino, but Tacofino deserves its own special mention. While you can now find Tacofino in Vancouver and Victoria, there’s nothing like eating at the original. Enjoy some of their amazing Mexican food served right out of a food truck. You’ll find the food truck a 5-minute drive from town at the back of the parking lot where Live to Surf and Wildside Grill are located, just off the Pacific Rim Highway.

This has to be the most popular food in Tofino, so expect to find long lines when you get here. Luckily, due to the nature of the food they make, they pump it out quickly so you shouldn’t have to wait too long and it’s worth the wait.

Be sure to get a watermelon basil freshie to go along with your burrito!

Drink a Flight of Beers at Tofino Brewing Co.

Like everything else in this town, Tofino Brewing Co. has nailed it with its beers. While the brewery may have started from humble beginnings, you can now find their beer all over the West Coast of Canada. But there’s nothing like knocking back a few beers in the place the beer is made and we love the atmosphere and layout of the tasting room at Tofino Brewing Co.

You can order single beers or get a flight so you can try a range of their brews. The Tofino Blonde Ale is a simple but delicious beer and we are also fond of the Tuff Session Ale and the Kelp Stout (not as weird as it sounds). They have a wide range of beers to choose from plus you can even grab some beers to take home with you. Their branding has been done so well and they also offer a small selection of clothing that is constantly changing and makes for a great souvenir from your trip.

Have a Campfire on the Beach

Get some friends together and go and watch an amazing sunset while sitting around the campfire. There are few better places to enjoy this type of thing than on Tofino’s beautiful beaches.

In May 2021, Tofino made a change to its campfire policy. While you can still have beach fires, it is now required that you use a portable appliance rather than an old-school bonfire with driftwood.

Unlike much of British Columbia, you can often go all summer in Tofino with no fire bans in place due to its wet climate. Small campfires are allowed on Mackenzie and Chesterman Beaches from 8am to 10pm with a portable appliance.

Take a Scenic Flight

Tofino is beautiful from all angles, but there are few better ways to take in the scenery than from the air. As far as Tofino activities go, this one has to be the most impressive!

You can jump in a floatplane at Tofino Harbour and enjoy a short scenic flight over one of the most incredible landscapes in the world. You’ll be blown away by the sheer beauty of this place and you’ll get to fully appreciate the vast network of islands and waterways in Clayoquot Sound.

Things to do on Vancouver Island

Storm Watching Tofino

Storm watching in Tofino, BC is one of the best things to do in Tofino in the winter. Large storms roll in unobstructed across the Pacific Ocean and huge waves hammer the shores of Tofino throughout the winter. It’s a humbling sight to see the power of nature at work and it’s easy to see why the coastline is so rugged after thousands of years of being pummelled by the ocean.

The best time to storm watch in Tofino is from early November until the end of February. There are still some early storms in October and some late storms arriving in early March, but November to February is the peak time to visit to see nature at its wildest.

If you want the ultimate storm watching experience then you need to visit the Wickaninnish Inn . Located right out on the point at the north end of Chesterman Beach, you’ll get to experience the gale force winds, huge waves and turbulent skies first hand. You can even get some spa treatments in their Ancient Cedars Spa which has unobstructed views out over the water.

Walk Along the Forest Boardwalks

There are several boardwalks through the forest in and around Pacific Rim National Park that you can explore. They take you into the heart of the old growth forests and you’ll get a fascinating look at this amazing ecosystem.

One of the most popular choices is the Rainforest Trail , which offers two routes, A and B, which are on either side of the highway. Another great option is the boardwalk to Schooner Cove which leads you right through the forest and onto an often deserted beach.

Tofino Rainforest trail

A Few Final Things

If all of this isn’t enough to keep you busy then there are several other things to do in Tofino you can enjoy. You can play a round of golf at Long Beach Golf Club, hike the Bomber Trail or Lonecone Mountain, enjoy the views from Radar Hill or grab some delicious ice cream from Chocolate Tofino.

No matter how many times you visit here, there is always more to explore and you’ll never get bored. Plus, you will always want to return to your personal favourite places, like we do. Tofino really is a special place and we know you will fall in love with it just like we did.

Is Tofino BC all just beaches ? there’s nothing else for the tourist spot to see

thecoastalcampaign@gmail.com

There are a lot of beaches there but there are plenty of other things to keep you entertained. There are some great hikes, so many good restaurants, cool shops and different tours you can do. Even if you aren’t a big fan of the beach we would still highly recommend Tofino. It’s amazing!

Sarah

You mentioned you worked here one summer, do you have any recommendations on where to work in Tofino?

We worked in Tofino Resort & Marina. Finding work isn’t too bad, accommodation is the hard part. If you can find a job with accommodation that’s ideal!

I’m headed to Tofino in 2 weeks and this is a super complete guide! Thanks!

Tofino Birding & Bird Watching Tours

The west coast of Vancouver Island offers some of the finest birding in Canada. The total number of birds recorded here now stands at 350 species. From late April to mid-May, and again from July to October, tens of thousands of shorebirds pass through Tofino. Be prepared to be awed by the sight of 10,000 sandpipers taking wing, or by an incoming flock of Marbled Godwits bound for Alaska. All told, 44 species of waders have been recorded here, with at least 35 species passing through annually. Some, such as the Rock Sandpiper, Black Turnstone, Surfbird, Wandering Tattler, Sharp-tailed Sandpiper and Black Oystercatcher, are found only on the Pacific Coast.

Saw Whet Owl. Photo by Adrian Dorst

Late spring and summer bring western specialties such as Western Tanager, Black-headed Grosbeak, Townsend's Warbler and McGillivray's Warbler. Even fall and winter can be exciting and productive, for this is when waterfowl of numerous species arrive on our mudflats by the thousands.

Your guide, Adrian Dorst, will tailor his trips to your wishes. If you prefer casual and relaxed with a pleasant walk, that will be the order of the day. If you have a list of must-see birds, then we will travel to the best locations to conduct our search, keeping in mind that many birds are seasonal and cannot be conjured up when they aren't here. Be prepared to have a lovely time and you probably will.

About Your Guide: Adrian Dorst

Adrian Dorst has lived on the west coast since 1972. Since then he has conducted numerous bird surveys for a variety of agencies, and was a co-author of Birds of Pacific Rim National Park, published in 1978. He was also, for many years, a professional nature and wilderness photographer with several books under his belt, including the best-seller, Clayoquot; On the Wild Side and Reflections at Sandhill Creek; Meditations On the Wild West Coast. Since 2001, he has been leading bird trips and guided nature walks in the Tofino/Long Beach area.
