5 Great Sci-Fi Movies Starring Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise may be best known for his performances in Mission: Impossible and Top Gun, but he has also played complex characters in sci-fi films.

Tom Cruise is considered one of the greatest movie stars of all time, thanks to his tremendous work as Ethan Hunt in the Mission: Impossible franchise, as well as his iconic roles in Top Gun and Risky Business . However, Cruise has also found success in big-budget sci-fi films, including a couple of them directed by Steven Spielberg.

While characters like Hunt and Maverick are portrayed as invincible men who can't be defeated, the protagonists that Cruise embodies in his sci-fi epics are vulnerable individuals who get caught up in complicated situations, such as going to war against alien forces, getting involved with murder cases, or trying to regain important memories. Cruise also has strong interactions with female characters in terms of working with them to understand the main conflict, which sometimes includes messing around with the conventions of time and space.

Updated May 26, 2022 by Mark Sammut: Tom Cruise is back in the headlines with the release of Top Gun: Maverick, and the sequel has garnered an incredible reception so far. Over the course of his storied career, the actor has tested his skills by diving into a wide range of genres and styles, including science-fiction. This article has been expanded to include more information about Tom Cruise's best sci-fi movies , including where they can be streamed. A section regarding the movie star's upcoming projects has also been added.

Vanilla Sky

This sci-fi picture reunited Cruise with Jerry Maguire director Cameron Crowe, which also combines psychological thriller with romance. Cruise plays David Aames, a publicist with plenty of privilege who appears to have everything: a successful job, a beautiful partner, a nice home, a fast car, etc. However, when a car accident nearly kills David, he (and the audience) tries to solve a complex puzzle that questions what is real and what is fantasy (similar to Christopher Nolan's complex film Memento ).

RELATED: Underrated Sci-Fi Movies From The 1980s & Where To Stream Them

Along with having a heavily disfigured face and needing to wear a mask to help him heal, David also finds himself in a love triangle with two seductive women: his partner Julie (portrayed by a wild Cameron Diaz) and Sofia (played by Penélope Cruz). David also has reflective conversations with a psychologist (played by Kurt Russell), who tries to help David figure out if he murdered anyone after being charged with a murder he doesn't remember nor believe he committed. Like Memento or Inception , this feature is a test for its protagonist to question his sense of reality and to figure out what makes his life happy and enjoyable.

This action-packed sci-fi film features an apocalyptic future in which Cruise portrays Jack Harper, one of the last remaining humans on Earth in 2077 after alien scavengers destroy the Moon and leave the planet in turmoil. Harper uses combat drones to encounter all the scavengers left on Earth, but when he learns that the scavengers are actually humans trying to defeat the alien artificial intelligence threat called Tet (which controls the drones), Harper also discovers that there are clones of him (and several other humans) who are loyal to Tet and become a major threat to humanity.

There are eye-opening images of a broken-down New York (including the New York Public Library in ruins, and the Empire State Building and city bridges left uninhabited and in darkness). As Harper, Cruise's character is reminiscent of Arnold Schwarzenegger's role in Total Recall due to the fact that Harper has dreams based on his past, which involve memories of previous missions he's had as a commander for NASA. Harper's dreams help him remember his true identity and the love he shares with his wife Julia (also a soldier). Along with Cruise's complex role, Morgan Freeman also stars as a rebel leader, and there are high-octane action sequences that include shootouts and chases involving big space aircraft.

War Of The Worlds

Steven Spielberg's adaptation of H.G. Wells' novel is intense and hard-hitting as Cruise plays Ray Ferrier, a dockworker who is divorced and spends time with his children during a weekend gathering at his home. Ray is considered a flawed husband and father, but he is put to the test when blue spaceships with sting rays invade Earth to take out humanity. Ray does everything he can to protect his teenage son Robbie and young daughter Rachel from harm.

RELATED: Things That Early Sci-Fi Got Right About The Modern World

While the effects involving the alien creatures are massive and loud, what makes this sci-fi feature effective is the drama surrounding Ray and his family. Ray proves to his kids that he is capable of providing safety for them, even if that involves bumps along the road (running out of food and water, trying to find shelter to keep warm, etc.). The paranoia surrounding the human characters also provides plenty of drama, especially in a scene where Ray has to fight numerous civilians who intend to steal his minivan or another moment in which a paranoid man (well played by Tim Robbins) believes everyone is going to die. The best action scene occurs when Ray is grabbed by one of the alien tripods but manages to slip a pack of grenades inside, destroying it before the pod can take him away.

Edge Of Tomorrow

The Bourne Identity director Doug Liman crafts a unique spin on time travel in this ingenious sci-fi picture involving William Cage, a U.S. Army Major who is skilled in providing public affairs to an army called the United Defense Force (UDF) in their fight against powerful aliens called "Mimics." However, when Cage is ordered to fight aliens with a squad in France, he fears for his life and ends up dying and repeating the same day over and over again ( a nod to Groundhog Day ).

This is one of Cruise's most vulnerable roles because his character isn't a professional when it comes to combat and fighting in a war. However, by reliving the same day repeatedly, Cage manages to get better at facing the aliens and anticipating their every move. His partnership with Sergeant Rita Vrataski (a tough Emily Blunt) is also engaging because as she helps him become a skillful warrior, Cage provides Rita with information about how to destroy the Mimics. While the film is most intense, there are comedic scenarios in which Rita kills Cage many times whenever he fails and messes up during training, or when Cage constantly meets the same members of a squad and memorizes their actions and personal histories.

Minority Report

Before War of the Worlds , Spielberg and Cruise collaborated for this sci-fi action thriller based on Philip K. Dick's short story of the same name. The story revolves around Chief John Anderton (Cruise), a cop who works for a police program that solves murders and crimes before they occur. When Anderton finds out that he is wrongly accused of murder, he becomes a wanted fugitive.

This is Cruise's best performance in a sci-fi feature because he manages to portray an intelligent but conflicted detective who intends to clear his name, as well as a husband who misses his wife. The scenes in which Anderton and his unit use advanced technology in his "Precrime" police program to track down would-be killers is fascinating because it's all so far ahead of its time, along with flying police cars and vehicles used in elaborate chase sequences when Anderton is a suspect being hunted down by fellow cops. The film effectively combines elements of the noir and chase film in a whodunit thriller with cool tech, along with strong supporting work from Colin Farrell and Max von Sydow (who aren't what they seem).

These sci-fi features are not only filled with action and/or psychological tension, but they also display Tom Cruise's versatility as an actor, portraying characters who go through tremendous obstacles. Audiences will have to wait and see what type of film Cruise will do in space with Elon Musk .

Upcoming Sci-Fi Movies Starring Tom Cruise

Throughout his career, Cruise has periodically dappled in science fiction, but he is not exactly synonymous with the genre. However, that might be set to change as the actor is reportedly working on two sci-fi projects, one of which is particularly ambitious.

SpaceX Project

In 2020, a rumor hit the rounds stating that Tom Cruise will be teaming up with Elon Musk's SpaceX to film a movie in space, specifically the International Space Station. Information regarding this project was scarce for quite a long time, but recent reports state that production is likely to start once the actor completes his work on the upcoming Mission: Impossible sequels.

Doug Liman is attached as the movie's director, and he also shares writing credits with Christopher McQuarrie. Universal Pictures will be handling the production. Nothing about the story has been revealed, so it remains to be seen whether this feature opts for a more grounded or extravagant tone.

Live Die Repeat And Repeat

A sequel to Edge of Tomorrow is in the pipeline, with reports even suggesting that the script is complete. Unfortunately, as exciting of a prospect as this is, the likelihood of it coming to fruition is not that great. Despite most key members showing interest in producing this follow-up, Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, and Doug Liman have struggled to align their schedules to make it happen. Live Die Repeat and Repeat is also likely to be an expensive undertaking, and while the 2014 release did not bomb at the box office, it was also not a runaway hit.

In this extremely unfortunate musical about ‘80s hair metal, Tom Cruise plays a karaoke version of a rock and roll god named Stacee Jaxx.

Released the same year as Risky Business , Tom Cruise plays the hunk in this high school sex comedy that time forgot. Get it? They’re "losin’ it"—as in their virginity.

Nearly a decade before Trump coined the term “Fake News,” Tom Cruise plays a morally corrupt senator making a presidential bid by planting a story through a journalist played by Meryl Streep. In the end, this pretentious and convoluted plot says very little about its moving parts.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back

Hand, Arm, Technology, Finger, Room, Gesture, Art, Media, Vacation, Interior design,

Though the tagline warns to never go back, Cruise unfortunately did go back to play the titular Jack Reacher, in a sequel that plays out like dumb, less tech-savvy Mission: Impossible.

Romance, Human, Interaction, Organism, Love, Adaptation, Photography, Scene, Movie, Cg artwork,

Tom Cruise and Mia Sara try to protect the last of the unicorns from Tim Curry, who is some sort of awesome devil muppet. It’s also the only straight-up fantasy movie Cruise has ever done—and it’s pretty obvious why.

Far and Away

Romance, Interaction, Forehead, Love, Fun, Photography, Gesture, Scene,

Seven years before they co-starred in Eyes Wide Shut (and two years after their wedding), Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman played star-crossed lovers and Irish immigrants trying to make it in America.

In this post-apocalyptic sci-fi thriller, Cruise is a drone repairman who’s also into American sports. When he finds a group of survivors (led by Morgan Freeman), he begins to question the nature of his entire reality. As always, Cruise holds down what is otherwise a pretty clunky plot.

Tom Cruise plays a German officer with an American accent who leads a group of German soldiers with British accents in a plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler during WWII. It’s based on an actual military plot that could have entered some intriguing territory, had it not settled for being average historical escapism.

Knight and Day

Gun, Firearm, Shooter game, Airsoft gun, Airsoft, Trigger, Movie, Games, Recreation, Shooting,

In this action comedy, Cruise is once again a secret agent who accidentally ropes Cameron Diaz into an international conspiracy. For all his macho spy stuff, Cruise proves in Knight and Day that he can take this hero stuff lightly too.

Mission: Impossible II

Blue, Water, Light, Fun, Photography, Liquid bubble, Glass,

Paramount+ Netflix

The worst of Cruise’s six Mission: Impossible movies, this one sees Ethan Hunt trying to stop a deadly weaponized virus that’s going to be released by terrorists. Unfortunately, director John Woo’s style didn’t quite fit with the international espionage of this franchise.

Jack Reacher

Movie,

In his first of two movies playing the titular former military police-officer-turned-vigilante-drifter, Cruise’s character tries to stop a military sniper on a killing spree. Of course, Cruise also did all his own driving stunts.

The Outsiders

Social group, People, Youth, Friendship, Fun, Team, Photography, Leisure, Jeans, Family,

Coming down from the golden phase of his career, Francis Ford Coppola assembled an incredible upcoming cast for The Outsiders that included Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Matt Dillon, Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Ralph Macchio, and Diane Lane.

Vehicle, Car, Fictional character, Family car, City car,

In his second-ever onscreen role, Cruise plays David Shawn, one of the military cadets who attempt to protect their academy from being torn down for local condo developers. Pretty low stakes as far as military dramas go.

War of the Worlds

Human, Jacket, Outerwear, Beard, Facial hair, Leather, Fictional character,

In this Steven Spielberg re-imagining of the H.G. Wells novel, Cruise plays a father attempting to keep his children safe throughout an alien invasion. Though it has all the highlights of a Spielbergian sci-fi, it wasn’t quite enough to cause riots like Orson Welles’s infamous radio broadcast.

The Last Samurai

Recreation, Musical instrument, Team,

Amazon Netflix

A white savior complex brings down what is otherwise a well-acted period period piece about an American Civil War veteran sent to train a 19th century Japanese army.

Mission: Impossible III

Romance, Interaction, Love, Human, Photography, Gesture, Scene, Happy, Flash photography, Dance,

Before he was put in charge of both Star Wars and Star Trek , J.J. Abrams’s big Hollywood blockbuster movie directorial debut was at the helm of Mission: Impossible III , which saw a retired Ethan Hunt brought back in the game to stop an excellent Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Vanilla Sky

Barechested, Chest, Muscle, Human, Arm, Human body, Neck, Flesh, Photography, Trunk,

Cruise stars in this philosophical thriller as a man haunted by the specter of a former flame after becoming disfigured in a car crash. (Fun fact: Penelope Cruz plays the same character in this remake of her Spanish film, Abre los Ojos .)

Days of Thunder

Vehicle, Car, Tire, Automotive wheel system, Motorsport, Automotive tire, Compact car, Team, City car,

NASCAR moved into the mainstream thanks to this movie in which Cruise plays a promising driver hoping to making it in the big leagues.

War of the Worlds

Author

Tom Cruise made his first appearance in the science fiction/fantasy genre nearly 30 years ago in a film more fantasy than sci-fi. Here is a rundown of Cruise’s adventures in these movies:

LEGEND (1985): Director: Ridley Scott. Cruise is Jack, who must take a break from teaching Princess Lili (Mia Sara) the language of the animals when Darkness (Tim Curry) plots to have the world turn to ice. Jack must track down Lili and the unicorns needed to restore the world to better living conditions. Along the way, he encounters the elf Honeythorn Gump (David Bennent, voiced by Alice Playten), the fairy Oona (Annabelle Lanyon), and dwarves Brown Tom (Cork Hubbert) and Screwball (Billy Barty). The film picked up an Academy Award nomination for Best Makeup.

VANILLA SKY (2001): Cruise is David Aames, a wealthy owner of a publishing company in this English-language remake of “Open Your Eyes,” Alejandro Amenabar’s 1997 Spanish film. It is a complex mix of incidents that may or may not be real, including a romance between Aames and the beautiful Sofia Serrano (Penelope Cruz), along with a jilted lover, Julie Gianni (Cameron Diaz), who tries to kill him in an auto accident. Now disfigured, Aames meets a man in a bar (Noah Taylor), who informs him he has been in a cryonic sleep for 150 years, after he killed himself with a drug overdose. He soon learns that when he signed a contract with the cryogenics company preserving him, he opted to start the lucid dream shortly after his drunken night when Sofia left him under the “vanilla sky” from a Monet painting. However, during his sleep, the dream has gone horribly wrong and attempts to incorporate elements from his subconscious. Director: Cameron Crowe.

MINORITY REPORT (2002): In this movie based on a Philip K. Dick short story, Cruise’s Chief John Anderton is the leader of a Precrime force that uses Pre-Cogs, people gifted with the ability to see into the future, to arrest people before they commit crimes. Things go awry when the Pre-Cogs predict that Anderton will be committing a murder in the next 36 hours, and Anderton does not even know the pending victim. He decides to solve the mystery by finding the “minority report” — the prediction of the female Pre-Cog Agatha (Samantha Morton) — that might tell a different story and prove Anderton innocent. Director: Steven Spielberg.

WAR OF THE WORLDS (2005): In Cruise’s second collaboration with Spielberg, he plays Ray Ferrier, a divorced dockworker with a barely amicable relationship with his son Robbie (Justin Chatwin) and daughter Rachel (Dakota Fanning). During a weekend visit with his children, Ferrier finds himself and the world under attack with huge mechanical beasts bent on taking over the world, thrusting him into a role of being resouceful or perishing, along with his family. This remake of the 1953 classic film, which, along with Orson Welles’ earlier, terrifying radio broadcast, was based on the H.G. Wells story, earned three Academy Award nominations in technical categories.Director: Steven Spielberg.

OBLIVION (2013): Cruise plays a guy named Jack Harper in the year 2077. With the Earth ravaged after years of war with the Scavs, Harper and his partner/lover Vika Olsen (Andrea Riseborough), in addition to providing maintenance of drones on Earth, are assigned to protect from Scav attacks the gigantic offshore fusion energy generators that provide power to the Tet, a large space station used as a launching pad to transport humans to the Saturn moon Titan for relocation. Jack has had visions of himself and a woman during prewar days visiting the Empire State Building. One day while checking out a signal he discovers the pre-invasion spacecraft Odyssey that finally has crashed on Earth, and inside he finds the woman of his visions, Julia (Olga Kurylenko). When she is revived she knows Jack, but before he can investigate further he and Julia are attacked and captured by Scavs, who turn out to be human survivors, led by Malcolm Beech (Morgan Freeman). Beech urges Jack to help them by destroying the Tet using a number of unstable fuel cells, telling Jack that everything he knows is a lie. Director: Joseph Kosinski.

Whereas some actors enjoyed massive success early in their careers before fading into obscurity, Cruise's star power has endured throughout many decades . Whether because of his acting chops or the movies' overall quality, many of the projects in Cruise's extensive body of work rank among some of the best films ever made.

10 Interview With The Vampire (1994)

Tom cruise plays lestat de lioncourt, interview with the vampire.

Tom Cruise is primarily known for heroic roles, but Interview with the Vampire sees him play a villainous character, and despite the controversy over his casting, he absolutely nails the part. Based on the novel by Anne Rice, the movie focuses on an 18th-century vampire who tells his story to a modern-day reporter in order to make peace with his past. Cruise portrays Lestat, another, once-charming vampire who finds himself regretting his near-immortality after turning an innocent girl into one of their kind. The adaptation takes a uniquely sobering approach to vampirism , and its cinematography and set design are among the most convincing and immersive ever seen in a film.

9 Risky Business (1983)

Tom cruise plays joel goodsen, risky business.

Starring Tom Cruise when he was a relative newcomer, Risky Business sees the actor play an over-achieving high school student who is left home alone while his parents go on vacation. Risky Business made Cruise a star with one iconic scene where he jams out to the song "Old Time Rock and Roll." The lasting appeal of this moment speaks to its quality and impact as well as Cruise's suddenly clear magnetism. Risky Business is notable for its screenplay by Paul Brickman, who also directed the movie, as it perfectly showcases the challenges of a popular teenager whose parents and teachers constantly push him to be the best.

8 The Color Of Money (1986)

Tom cruise plays vincent lauria.

Directed by Martin Scorsese and adapted from the Walter Tevis novel of the same name, The Color of Money is a late sequel to the 1961 film The Hustler . Paul Newman reprises his role as Fast Eddie, a pool hustler who recruits Cruise's character, Vincent, to help him swindle other players. The Color of Money is about greed and how it changes people, and the effects of Vincent and Fast Eddie's intense rivalry on their personal lives is a strong reinforcement of the theme. Released shortly after his blockbuster success with Top Gun , this is a cool, entertaining movie and an early showcase of Cruise's talent as a dramatic actor.

7 A Few Good Men (1992)

Tom cruise plays lt. daniel kaffee, a few good men.

A Few Good Men is a legal drama that stars Tom Cruise as a military lawyer defending two U.S. Marines charged with murder. One of the best movies based on a stage play , it marks the screenwriting debut of Aaron Sorkin, adapting his own work, and showcases some of the best dialogue ever written . At the movie's center is the theme of valor in the face of uncertainty, as Cruise's character bravely fights the case despite the seemingly infinite odds stacked against him. Cruise brings a certain intensity to his role, and his ability to rile up Jack Nicholson's Col. Jessep in the film's iconic courtroom scene also speaks volumes.

6 Rain Man (1983)

Tom cruise plays charlie babbitt.

Rain Man follows a heartwarming story about the power of family over financial worth and features a surprisingly nuanced take on the complex nature of brothers. Tom Cruise plays Charlie, a charming schemer obsessed with money who attempts to manipulate his way into his autistic older brother's good graces upon discovering their father cut him out of his will. A film about solidarity, compassion, and love, Rain Man successfully gets its messages across in a way that's heartfelt and believable .

5 Magnolia (1999)

Tom cruise plays frank t. j. mackey.

Written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, Magnolia tells a series of seemingly unrelated stories that follow the same themes of loss and regret. While the subject matter makes for challenging viewing, its reprieve comes in the form of its ability to make its drama compelling. Tom Cruise's usual charm and intensity are in full effect in the movie, but his heart-breaking scene with his father (played by Jason Robards) on his deathbed is one of the strongest performances the actor has ever delivered , and out of all the movie's different characters and storylines, his best reinforces the film's themes.

4 Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)

Tom cruise plays imf agent ethan hunt, mission: impossible - dead reckoning.

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One delivers tons of action , as is expected from the franchise. Mission: Impossible is famous for its stunts, and this installment is no different as it sees Tom Cruise's character — and the actor himself — again defying the laws of physics to accomplish his latest world-saving operation. This time, his character, IMF agent Ethan Hunt, works with his team of operatives to stop the influence of a powerful rogue AI. Despite the movie ending on a cliffhanger, it offers enough thrills to make it one of the best movie sequels ever made .

3 Edge Of Tomorrow (2014)

Tom cruise plays major william cage, edge of tomorrow.

Based on a manga, Edge of Tomorrow sees Tom Cruise as Major William Cage, a public relations officer with minimal combat experience who is forced by his superiors to aid in fighting an alien-occupied Europe in a dystopian future. Moreover, Cage dies and reboots repeatedly throughout the movie after discovering he's caught in a time loop. One of the best sci-fi movies of the 2010s , Edge of Tomorrow offers a unique take on its source material with its intense action and sharp humor .

2 Collateral (2004)

Tom cruise plays vincent.

Michael Mann's Collateral is a neo-noir thriller that sees a burned-out taxi driver pick up a mysterious man who turns out to be a hired killer. As one of Michael Mann's most memorable characters , Cruise delivers an exceptional performance in the role of the hitman, Vincent, with his usual charisma making the assassin all the more threatening. He also has excellent chemistry with Jamie Foxx, who plays the driver, Max; together, they almost make viewers forget that they're actors during some of their more intense scenes in the movie. Collateral also features Mann's signature moody, atmospheric depiction of Los Angeles, which effectively draws viewers into the film's unique neo-noir world .

1 Top Gun: Maverick (2022)

Tom cruise plays cpt. pete "maverick" mitchell, top gun: maverick.

Another one of the best sequels of all time, Top Gun: Maverick sees Tom Cruise's Pete "Maverick" Mitchell return to the titular school to train the next generation of graduates while also dealing with some of his longstanding demons. This is a movie that's just as much about family and trust as it is about exhilarating dogfights, which makes it a surprisingly deep and thoughtful blockbuster. Top Gun: Maverick cemented Cruise's status as one of Hollywood's biggest stars as its heartfelt story and creative action scenes helped the sequel gross over $1 billion.

The Best and Worst Tom Cruise Sci-Fi Movies

Maurice Mitchell

Here are Tom Cruise’s best and worst sci-fi movies. Last weekend the latest Tom Cruise movie ,  The Mummy (2017), opened and it looks like this is going to be his latest flop. The movie has a dismal 17% rating on Rotten Tomatoes  and pulled in a pathetic $57.2 million in the North American box office.

Cruise has an amazing career as a dramatic and action star, but he’s made a few science-fiction movies. Some have been brilliant, but some have been awful.

Here are all Tom Cruise’s science fiction films ranked from best to worst.

1. Minority Report (2002)

Based on the 1956 science fiction short story by the late Philip K. Dick Tom Cruise stars as a future Washington D.C. policeman with a unique organization that stops crimes before they happen. In the year 2054, a group of mutant psychic children has the ability to see visions of future murders. Using that information the “Procog” division arrests people before they can commit crimes. But then the precogs predict he will murder a man he’s never met. He goes on the run to discover if the infallible psychic predictions are ever wrong.

Directed by Steven Spielberg the movie is thought-provoking without being preachy and visceral with arresting visuals. Minority Report shows a future grounded in reality. It also predicts future technology like the gesture recognition in your cell phone.

Tom Cruise is lovable and cocky but a tortured soul. The movie has all of the things you expect from a Cruise movie, including fast action, high emotion, and a strong character arc, but it also does what all good science fiction should do. Great science-fiction makes you think. Minority Report asks “does free will exists if the future can be predicted”?

2. Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

Tom Cruise has played a military man in many films like Top Gun (1986), A Few Good Men (1992), and  Born on the Fourth of July (1989).  Edge of Tomorrow  (2014)   turns the concept on its ear. Cruise stars as Major William Cage a public relations officer who’s never been in combat. Suddenly he’s forced into a war zone against aliens called “Mimics”. After he’s killed, he wakes up to discover he’s stuck in a time loop and forced to relive the day over and over again. Together with revered Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski, played by Emily Blunt , they search for the reason for his predicament and a way to end the war once and for all.

Edge of Tomorrow is based on the popular 2004 Japanese light novel All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka . It captures many of the themes of the manga. It’s action-packed and has lots of light humor and clever twists.

A brilliant premise and brilliant acting make this story work perfectly. It’s not a movie you’d watch over and over again, but it’s entertaining. The biggest complaint is the ending, which is completely different from the heart-breaking ending of the novel. In true Hollywood fashion, they shoehorn in a happy ending. It ruins a great film.

3. War of the Worlds (2005)

The Mummy isn’t the first time Cruise has starred in a remake. He also sang in Rock of Ages (2012) based on the 2006 rock jukebox Broadway musical. That one did OK, but this one didn’t fare as well.

In this remake of the 1950’s classic Cruise plays a divorced dockworker named Ray Ferrier fleeing from an alien invasion. While struggling to protect his son and daughter he witnesses the devastation of humanity.

Directed by Steven Spielberg it’s a decent disaster movie and captures some of the thrills and paranoia of the original film. Cruise has a surprisingly shocking scene where he kills a man and it’s hard to say if it’s justified or not. That gives the character a dark side that Cruise just isn’t good at.

This movie has a nice twist by focusing on the character arc of the everyman. But this is Tom Cruise so he still manages to be a larger-than-life hero. It delivers on the promise of a typical Tom Cruise action film. The story is muddled and weak though and doesn’t really add anything new to the film. It’s a nice film, but not a great one. Cruise’s performance was nominated for a Saturn “Best Actor” and a Raspberry “Worst acting” award. Both are deserved.

4. Oblivion (2013)

On an Earth abandoned after an alien invasion Cruise plays a security repairmen named Jack Harper. He plans on completing his mission and leaving Earth, but he’s haunted by dreams of another time and a woman that seems familiar. In his travels, he finds a crashed ship that has the woman from his dreams. It makes him question his understanding of the world he lives in.

Joseph Kosinski’s direction makes this the most beautiful film you’ll ever see. But the story is pathetic and falls apart halfway into the film. This is one of the few Tom Cruise movies based on an original story, but it turns out that’s the biggest mistake.

Cruise does an OK job on this mind-bending story. But the ridiculous twists leave you more confused than inspired. It’s a terrible movie but makes great wallpaper for your computer desktop.

Agree with you about Oblivion on both counts – the plot is weak and the visuals are strong. That's not just Kosinski's direction BTW although I imagine he had a strong sense of vision, it's also the work of several talented designers led by Darren Gilford – who was also a production designer on Tron Legacy and The Force Awakens. Come to think of it, both of those films have also been described by some as having weaker plots and stronger visuals.

Oblivion retro review: is Tom Cruise sci-fi movie underrated or rightfully forgotten?

Initially overlooked, how does Oblivion hold up 10 years later?

Tom Cruise in Oblivion

The 2010s were up and down for Tom Cruise. His Mission: Impossible franchise was successfully revitalized, but just about everything else — save for Edge of Tomorrow — has been pretty much forgotten. But should they have been? Considering that one of those movies, Oblivion , celebrates its 10th anniversary in April 2023, let's examine it.

Oblivion is a sci-fi/action movie that stars Cruise, Andrea Riseborough , Olga Kurylenko, Morgan Freeman, Melissa Leo and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. The movie was Directed by Joseph Kosinski, who would later go on to direct Tom Cruise to much success in Top Gun: Maverick .

The Top Gun sequel proved that Kosinski and Cruise make a good team, so is Oblivion an underrated gem from the pair that should be given more respect? Before we answer that, let’s look at the key details about Oblivion , which will include some spoilers for the movie.

What is Oblivion about?

In addition to directing, Oblivion is based on a graphic novel story from Kosinski, which was adapted by by Karl Gajdusek and Michael Arndt. Here is the official synopsis for the movie via Peacock , where it is currently streaming:

"Before departing from a devastated planet Earth, a drone repairman rescues a woman from a downed spaceship, triggering a battle to save mankind."

Giving a little more detail, the movie takes place in 2077. Cruise's repairman Jack Harper explains in voiceover that an alien invasion took place around 2017. They destroyed the moon, which caused numerous natural disasters, and then launched a ground attack. He says nukes were used to win the war, but their devastation forced humanity to resettle on Saturn's moon Titan, with key resources for their survival still being mined from Earth's water supply.

That is what Jack and his partner Victoria (Riseborough) are doing on their five-year mission, protecting and repairing the machines that help with this from the last remnants of the enemy aliens still on Earth.

However, Jack finds a crashed ship with human survivors, one of which resembles a woman (Kurylenko) he has dreams about but has no other memory of. Later, he is captured by the enemy, only for it to be revealed they are human, continuing the fight against the enemy aliens who have manipulated Jack into doing their bidding. Jack's search for the truth of who he is and what side he should be fighting for is the crux of the movie.

Oblivion's most iconic moment

After learning that he has been lied to and wanting answers, Jack becomes the target of the drones he has been in charge of repairing. When a chase sequence results in him crash landing in what has been labeled a deadly radiation zone, he gets an even bigger shock: not only is the radiation zone not deadly, but he sees another version of himself, fixing drones in this area.

Jack soon learns that he is a clone, and the alien enemy has made hundreds (if not thousands) of copies of him to serve their purposes on Earth. But what makes this sequence stand out is not the reveal, but the fact that we get to see some Cruise vs Cruise action in a fun little fight scene:

The legacy of Oblivion

Despite Oblivion having Tom Cruise and being a big-budget sci-fi movie, it was not given the summer blockbuster rollout that you may expect. The movie hit US theaters on April 19 (a little earlier in many other parts of the world) and was greeted with a very mild shrug.

Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes has the movie scored at a 54% from critics, which gives it a "Rotten" score. Inkoo Kang , writing for Screen Junkies, said "Ultimately, Oblivion is aptly named — no other movie so far this year has been so instantly forgettable," while New York Magazine's David Edelstein wrote "Was Cruise trying to beat out fellow Scientologist John Travolta for the honor of starring in the dumbest sci-fi epic ever?" Even the reviews that are labeled as "Fresh" didn’t exactly give the movie a ringing endorsement. Richard Roeper called it "the equivalent of a pretty damn good cover band," and CNN's Tom Charity classified it as "glossy, derivative, ambitious and fatally underpowered."

Audiences at the time didn't boost the movie's reputation either. It earned $89.1 million at the US box office, which put it as the 41st highest grossing movie of 2013, below the critically-panned Armie Hammer and Johnny Depp movie The Lone Ranger . It did better internationally, earning $286 million globally, but it still earned less than movies like Smurfs 2 and G.I. Joe: Retaliation .

There have been those making the case that Oblivion is an underrated entry in Cruise's filmography and harkens back to the type of sci-fi movies you don't see as much anymore . Now that we've re-watched Oblivion , here's our take on whether those arguments hold water.

Is Oblivion underrated?

Tom Cruise in Oblivion

Short answer? No, not really. While we'll give the movie credit for a cool, post-apocalyptic Earth look (it was filmed primarily in Vatnajökull National Park, Iceland) and its story has some twists and turns that can be engaging, Oblivion fails truly dive into its concept or characters.

There's the old adage of show don't tell, which Oblivion does not adhere to. Cruise opens with a voiceover monologue about what happened to Earth and why they are there, only to then explain it all again to Kurylenko's character again when she arrives on the scene. Then, when the final twist of the movie explaining what happened to Jack is revealed, we've already basically been told by Morgan Freeman's character. Sure, we get some added depth, but not enough to make the moment truly hit. Exposition can be necessary, but not when it is spoon feeding the audience stuff rather than trusting the story.

Beyond the story, the cast is going through the motions. Cruise is pretty flat and there's no real chemistry with Kurylenko. Meanwhile, this is pretty much a waste of Morgan Freeman. The MVP is Andrea Riseborough's Victoria, who is the only one that brings any kind of spark or depth to her character.

The best thing that we can say for Oblivion is that it failed so Top Gun: Maverick could eventually fly. Oblivion was Joseph Kosinski's second movie and his first collaboration with Cruise. You can see some bits in Top Gun: Maverick that are reminiscent of Oblivion (mostly the sequences of flying through canyons), but everything is more engaging and in service of a stronger, more impactful story in the Top Gun sequel.

Is Oblivion a bad watch? It's not the worst way to spend two hours if you're looking for something new. And credit where credit is due, it is an original sci-fi idea, which yes, would be nice to see more of these days. But by no means does it belong in the realm of Tom Cruise's better movies.

Tom Cruise Wanted to Play Rorschach in Zack Snyder’s Watchmen Movie

Tom Cruise Wanted to Play Rorschach in Zack Snyder’s Watchmen Movie

By Maggie Dela Paz

Speaking with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Watchmen director Zack Snyder confirmed that Tom Cruise wanted to play masked vigilante Rorschach in the 2009 movie adaptation of Dave Gibbons’ DC comic book series. The role eventually went to Oscar-nominated actor Jackie Earle Haley (Little Children, Alita: Battle Angel), who Snyder described as “unbelievable.”

“I wanted Tom Cruise for Ozymandias. Tom wanted to play Rorschach,” Snyder recalled. “He wanted to play Rorschach, which I mean, obviously he could have done. But yeah, we had Jackie [Earle Haley] already, and Jackie is like, unbelievable. But I certainly would have considered Tom, in retrospect if I hadn’t had Jackie.”

The 2009 movie was directed by Snyder from a screenplay written by David Hayter and Alex Tse. It also starred Billy Crudup, Malin Åkerman, Matthew Goode, Patrick Wilson, Carla Gugino, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and more. During its theatrical run, the film received mixed reviews and an underwhelming box office performance.

What’s Next for Tom Cruise?

Following the blockbuster success of Top Gun: Maverick , Cruise is expected to reprise his iconic role in a third installment, which is still currently in development at Paramount Pictures. At the moment, the action star is filming the next sequel to his long-running spy franchise Mission: Impossible. Early this year, Cruise was also cast in Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s untitled Warner Bros. movie.

Exciting New WB Sci-Fi Movie Is The Perfect Replacement For Tom Cruise's $370M Sequel I've Wanted For 10 Years

  • "Mickey 17" is an exciting sci-fi thriller with a star-studded cast that includes Robert Pattinson, Steven Yeun, and Mark Ruffalo.
  • The film's plot, based on the novel "Mickey7," involves a character who can die repeatedly and return with memories intact.
  • "Mickey 17" shares similarities with "Edge of Tomorrow," offering a potential substitute for the long-awaited sequel to Tom Cruise's film.

At the beginning of 2025, Warner Brothers is releasing Mickey 17 , which is not only exciting for its unique concept and star-studded cast, but also because it is the perfect replacement for a sci-fi sequel that is taking more than 10 years to happen. Directed by Bong Joon-ho, Mickey 17 is a sci-fi thriller following Mickey, an "expendable" who goes on a mission to colonize an ice world, however when he unexpectedly dies, his new body forms with almost all his memories intact. Mickey 17's cast includes Robert Pattinson, Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo, and Thomas Turgoose.

Mickey 17 has a lot going for it, even so far away from its release date. The movie's cast is outstanding , with each actor coming off of huge successes, like Mark Ruffalo's Poor Things, Steven Yeun's Beef, and Robert Pattinson's The Batman. Furthermore, this film is the first for writer and director Bong Joon-ho since his Oscar-winning film, Parasite. However, Mickey 17 is not just strong due to its cast and crew. Its story, based on the 2022 novel "Mickey7," by Edward Ashton, is also something to anticipate, especially because of its striking similarities to another beloved science fiction film .

Bong Joon-Ho Explains Why Mickey 17's Title Is Different From The Sci-Fi Book It's Based On

Wb's mickey 17 sounds similar to tom cruise's edge of tomorrow, both movies use repeated deaths in a sci-fi setting.

Part of the excitement surrounding Mickey 17 is the commonalities it has with Tom Cruise's movie , Edge of Tomorrow. Not only are both movies deeply ingrained in the sci-fi genre, but they also use a fairly similar plot device . Where Mickey 17's main character is an "expendable," which can die repeatedly but return via "human printing," Edge of Tomorrow's Cage enters a time loop which allows him to die and resurrect himself over and over again. Both characters face these horrible circumstances, and yet, it seems that their memories are the key to their stories .

What is especially great about Mickey 17 and Edge of Tomorrow's similarities is that the 2025 movie can be a sort of replacement for the Edge of Tomorrow sequel that still has yet to happen.

Although Edge of Tomorrow 2 was discussed soon after the first movie's release, it has been ten years and a movie still has yet to occur . In this way, Mickey 17 can be a stand-in for what has yet to happen. Mickey 17 can delve into a new yet similar world that, hopefully, can appease the impatient fans of Cruise's Edge of Tomorrow.

Will Edge Of Tomorrow With Tom Cruise Ever Happen?

Edge of tomorrow 2 is still in the works.

Edge of Tomorrow 2 is definitely happening. The movie was jumpstarted in 2015 when Tom Cruise claimed he had a strong idea for a sequel . Director Doug Liman signed on, and since then, has been the film's biggest advocate. From 2016 to 2019, the script went through various rewrites, and was headed toward production when the COVID-19 pandemic hit . Emily Blunt then cast doubt on the film, mentioning its high budget. However, in Janaury 2024, it was revealed that Tom Cruise would be starring in various Warner Brothers movies and Edge of Tomorrow 2 would be one of them.

In 2016, Doug Liman noted that Edge of Tomorrow 2 would be a sequel that is a prequel.

Exciting New WB Sci-Fi Movie Is The Perfect Replacement For Tom Cruise's $370M Sequel I've Wanted For 10 Years

Tom Cruise Was Once Considered For Iron Man, But There Was Another Superhero Movie He Also 'Flirted' With

Two very different flavors of Cruise could have been present in the world of comic movies.

Tom Cruise in Collateral and Jackie Earle Haley in Watchmen, pictured side by side.

You don’t get to be an acting talent like Tom Cruise without racking up an obscene amount of “what if” stories. While we know the man as the lead of the Mission: Impossible movies , and a stunt performing daredevil extraordinaire, there were a couple times in his career that comic book movies came a calling.

And while we already know about Cruise’s potential role in the then developing Iron Man franchise, it turns out that Zack Snyder’s Watchmen was apparently another project that could have seen the star of some of the best action movies in the world playing an anti-hero.

The Watchmen cast

The Watchmen Characters Tom Cruise Was Considered For

As if Zack Snyder’s bombshell about Leonardo DiCaprio being considered for the role of Lex Luthor wasn’t enough of a shock, the director’s Happy Sad Confused interview also yielded this juicy gem. And apparently, while the Rebel Moon director wanted Tom Cruise to play one role, the man behind Ethan Hunt was gunning for the polar opposite. Take a look for yourself:

Tom Cruise wanted to be in WATCHMEN. But only as…wait for it…Rorschach. Another bombshell @ZackSnyder dropped in our chat. The full chat: https://t.co/qDTvcxgxfu pic.twitter.com/uLeM7UMESw April 18, 2024

I’m going to set aside the fact that, like Josh Horowitz, I consider the casting of Watchmen to be perfect. I can’t see either Jackie Earle Haley or Matthew Goode not playing Rorschach or Ozymandias at this point, but for the sake of academic curiosity, I’m going to pretend I can. With that caveat in place, I’d honestly have a hard time picking which role Tom Cruise would be better suited for.

Cruise’s Rorschach feels like it’d be a modified version of his Vincent character from Collateral , whereas Ozymandias would be a variation on his aloof killer archetype as Lestat from Interview with the Vampire . That second scenario would have been a particularly good showcase for Tom, as that character basically launches into a Watchmen ending explained monologue in the third act.

Both characters hold echoes of some of Tom Cruise's best movies. So to all of a sudden hear that Zack Snyder had met with the man to try and cast him in this epic comic adaptation has replaced Iron Man as the greater “what if” for Cruise’s potential career in comic movies. Which, after all this time, is no easy feat.

That Time Tom Cruise ‘Flirted’ With Playing Iron Man

If anyone ever wanted to know how forward thinking Tom Cruise is when it comes to movies, consider this: the man was flirting with comic book movies before the boom had truly taken off. While the ultimate reason for Cruise’s Iron Man refusal was classic Hollywood dealing, the man was circling these sorts of opportunities before they were cool.

History shook out the way it did, and Robert Downey Jr .’s iconic casting won out. That hasn’t stopped people from pondering over how a Cruise-led Iron Man could have looked. Especially since, on the Tom Cruise Continuum of Characters, Tony Stark feels like a more cavalier and grown up version of Risky Business’ Joel Goodsen.

Twice before we almost saw Tom Cruise landing a comic book movie icon on his resume; and who knows? We might just see him land that sort of role in the future, provided he wants to go down that road. The Multiverse of both DC and Marvel are vast, and there's surely someone Cruise would be down to play in the name of four paneled fun.

As it stands, the Watchmen we have at home is a sterling example of comic book adaptations done right. So should you want to revisit that movie, with or without visions of Tom Cruise participating, you can do just that. At the time of this publication, a Max subscription is all that’s required to catch up once again with those costumed heroes.

Dakota Fanning and Tom Cruise

Dakota Fanning has revealed the one date every year that Tom Cruise never forgets: her birthday!

During a recent interview for  Harper’s Bazaar  with her  Ripley  co-star Andrew Scott, the actress shared that she got her first mobile phone as a gift from the Top Gun: Maverick star.

“Oh, my God, I was so excited,” the Twilight actress recalled, before noting that she “didn’t have anybody to call or text at that time,” so she wasn’t exactly sure how useful the present was for her.

“You know, I was 11,” she quipped. “But I loved having it. I loved it. I felt so cool.”

The birthday presents didn’t stop with the memorable flip phone either, as Fanning said she still gets gifts from the Mission: Impossible actor.

“Tom sends me a birthday gift every year, and has since that birthday,” the Equalizer 3 actress explained, noting that the latest one arrived on her 30th birthday earlier in April.

Scott proceeded to joke, “So thoughtful. Really, really nice. He’s never given me   anything.”

Cruise isn’t the only Hollywood star to give Dakota a present. Earlier this month, during Elle magazine’s “Ask Me Anything” video series, Fanning shared that her Dreamer co-star Kurt Russell gave her a horse once.

Zack Snyder Has Plans For at Least 6 ‘Rebel Moon’ Movies

The second part of his new sci-fi universe, 'The Scargiver,' releases this Friday.

The Big Picture

  • Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon Part One quickly became a hit despite mixed reviews, setting the stage for a potential cinematic epic.
  • The upcoming Part Two, The Scargiver , continues the story of Kora and her allies defending their home against the Realm.
  • Snyder has big plans for the Rebel Moon universe, potentially expanding to six films if the fan support and Netflix backing align.

The second half of Zack Snyder 's long-awaited space opera Rebel Moon is only days away, yet the director's mind is already on the future of the burgeoning sci-fi universe beyond that. Although Part One: A Child of Fire earned an icy critical reception upon its release in December, it also raced to the top spot on the streamer's viewership charts after release and scored 34 million viewers through its first full week. The franchise has wasted no time expanding its world with a prequel comic , novelization, a video game , and fleshed-out director's cuts of both parts. However, Snyder has said that he hopes to build upon the cinematic side of things with his Star Wars -inspired epic.

Ahead of the release of Part Two: The Scargiver this Friday, April 19, Snyder spoke to RadioTimes.com about a potential sequel to the pair of films and offered a very ambitious answer to their questions. Snyder has made it no secret that he's eager to make a third Rebel Moon movie if he gets the green light, but he's now talking about as many as six installments by the time everything's said and done. "I guess four makes sense," he said. "Four or six movies, depending... I guess it's whether or not every time we make one of these movies we make two, that's the question. "

Rebel Moon ended up as two films because Snyder had too expansive a story to tell through one title at Netflix's desired length. Assuming he stays at Netflix, six films could mean two more two-part stories on the streamer that build off the ending of The Scargiver and explore the other threats that await Kora ( Sofia Boutella ) and her allies . He and his team have also been weighing the fan response if future sequels weren't two-part epics like the first. "We were talking about it the other day and I was like, would an audience be disappointed if they only got one movie now from Rebel Moon? Would they be like, 'Oh, it's one now? Great.'" Nothing appears to be set in stone, but it could mean a massive film franchise by the time Snyder's done with the story he wants to tell.

Zack Snyder Already Has a Story Set for a Third 'Rebel Moon' Film

Of course, getting the opportunity to make those films will require the support of Snyder's fans to prove that such an ambitious plan is financially tenable. He previously told Collider's Maggie Lovitt that one of the best ways to prove to Netflix that the franchise is worth the investment, aside from simply watching it, is to employ the streamer's built-in rating system. "Probably just in general, a double thumbs up would probably do it." If that call comes from the platform to return to Veldt for a third time, he's already prepared a story for the follow-up and could get work underway relatively quickly. "We absolutely have the story all set, we did all that work . We wrote a treatment for the movie so we'll see how we go ahead," he told RadioTimes.

Picking up from the climactic battle at the end of Part One , The Scargiver continues Kora's quest as the rebellion faces the full might of the realm, with Atticus Noble ( Ed Skrein ) leading the charge to put the insurgency down. Together, her group has united the people of Veldt to defend a once-peaceful village from the wrath of the Motherworld which has already taken so much from its people. Before the final battle begins, however, everyone has to confront their pasts and determine why they fight, forging unbreakable bonds along the way. Djimon Hounsou , Michiel Huisman , Doona Bae , Ray Fisher , and Anthony Hopkins also star alongside Staz Nair , Fra Fee , Cleopatra Coleman , Stuart Martin , Ingvar Sigurðsson , Alfonso Herrera , Cary Elwes , Rhian Rees , E. Duffy , Sky Yang , and Charlotte Maggi .

Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver releases on Netflix on April 19 . Extended director's cuts for both films are expected to be released sometime later this year. Stay tuned here at Collider for more news on potential sequels to Snyder's new universe as it comes out.

What Tom Cruise's Weirdest Sci-Fi Movie Gets Wrong About Time Travel

Are time loops possible according to physics?

tom cruise films sci fi

The wacky, high-octane sci-fi 2014 movie Edge of Tomorrow has it all: Tom Cruise, alien invasions, the U.S. military-industrial complex, and a shaky grasp of the concept of time.

But how realistic is its view of time travel? First, we need to dive into the movie a bit.

In a Groundhog Day scenario from hell, the battle-inexperienced Major Bill Cage (Tom Cruise) finds himself stuck in a time loop that reboots the same day again and again — but with aliens known as “Mimics” that are hellbent on destroying humanity. Each day, Cage dies on the battlefield between aliens and mankind, and each day he awakens in the same training camp surrounded by tough soldiers capable of deploying massive robotic “mech suits” to slaughter the invading alien army.

One of these soldiers is none other than Sergeant Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt). With the help of particle physicist and biologist, Dr. Carter, Vrataski explains to Cage how he acquired his time loop skills from the very aliens they’re trying to kill.

Basically, an alien hive mind known as Omega is the brains behind this military invasion. Whenever another type of alien — known as Alpha — dies in battle, the Omega resets time, starting the invasion over again. When Alpha attacked Cage with a ghastly blue goo, he absorbed the same time rebooting abilities from Omega.

“How do I control it?” Cage asks.

“You have to die. Every day. Until the Omega’s destroyed,” Vrataski tells a dismayed Cage.

The rest of the movie shows how Cage uses the skills and knowledge he gleans during each reboot to eventually defeat the invading aliens.

By now, the time loop concept has become wildly familiar to Hollywood and has been featured in wide-ranging projects from Happy Death Day to Russian Doll . But at the time of Edge of Tomorrow’ s release, the concept still felt pretty fresh. But this kind of time travel is more the domain of the screen than anything feasible in physics.

“The sort of loops that appear in Edge of Tomorrow are not physically possible, even given the most speculative physics,” Nikk Effingham , professor of philosophy at the University of Birmingham and an expert on the philosophy of time, tells Inverse .

Reel Science is an Inverse series that reveals the real (and fake) science behind your favorite movies and TV.

How Does Time Work?

Tom Cruise on the battlefield in Edge of Tomorrow

Edge of Tomorrow features Major Cage (Tom Cruise) as an experienced soldier stuck in an absurd time-loop scenario involving aliens.

As a movie that explores the concept of time loops, Edge of Tomorrow falls squarely in the time travel movie genre. So before we can explain the physics of time loops, we have to understand the differing perspectives on travel and, indeed, the nature of time itself. We like to think of time’s arrow proceeding in one direction — forward — but it’s not really that simple.

“Physics tells against the idea that time has a direction,” Effingham says.

John Friedman , physicist and professor emeritus at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, tells Inverse that the “direction” of time we humans observe simply proceeds in a direction of increasing entropy — thermal energy or disorder — which has its origins in the “smooth initial conditions in the early Universe.”

The perception of time depends on where you stand. Effingham says it's possible to imagine that there are “time-reversed” people who are proceeding backward in time from our point of view while they’re traveling forward in time according to their perception. In other words: time is a finicky beast to wrap your head around.

“ Edge of Tomorrow is sheer fantasy.”

Apart from physics, there are two general philosophical schools of thought on the nature of time: A-theory and B-theory. Both have differing takes on how we view the present, past, and future in relation to each other. A-theorists believe we can delineate events as taking place in past, present, or future, whereas B-theorists view temporal events in relation to each other.

“According to the A-theory, there are real facts about who is present, and who is past/future,” Kristie Miller , joint director of the Center for Time and philosophy professor at the University of Sydney, tells Inverse . “Likewise, the B-theorist thinks that all events exist, and that the present is just where you happen to be, and the past is just times earlier than that.”

Time travel in Edge of Tomorrow is logically possible whether you subscribe to an A-theory or B-theory of time — but the physics behind it is more debatable.

There are typically two different kinds of time travel stories we see in pop culture. In the first, you go back and change the past; this kind of movie violates what Seth Lloyd , a professor of mechanical engineering at MIT and co-founder of startup Turing , which devises time travel-inspired quantum computing applications to solve societal problems, calls the self-consistency principle. In the second kind of time travel story, you go back in time and your past actions are consistent with what we know happens in the future, so that kind of time travel logically works.

In Edge of Tomorrow , Cage is obviously trying to change the past, so this doesn’t really square with what we know about the physics of time travel.

“You can't actually go back into the past and then change it because you have to be consistent with what happened,” Lloyd says.

Is There A Scientific Basis For Time Loops?

Abstract reactor. Reactor core room. Device for carrying out a controlled thermonuclear reaction. Me...

On their surface, time loops seem to superficially resemble a physics concept known as a closed timelike curve.

Let’s get this out of the way first: the term “time loop” is a general fictional invention to describe the repetition of a segment of time and is not technically a scientific concept.

“We should just make a distinction between what we know about the physics of time travel in quantum mechanics and then just, you know, the notion of a loop in time,” Lloyd says.

It’s true that, on their surface, time loops seem to superficially resemble a physics concept known as a closed timelike curve.

“So when you say time loop, the thing that comes to mind is a closed timelike curve,” Nicole Yunger Halpern , author of Quantum Steampunk: The Physics of Yesterday's Tomorrow , tells Inverse .

“The entire Universe might form a time loop if it rotated in the correct way.”

Closed timelike curves are effectively trajectories through space-time that depart from a point in time and return to that same point in time through a closed loop via a mechanism like a wormhole. Yunger Halpern says closed timelike curves are compatible with Einstein’s theory of general relativity, which delineates the physical rules around space-time and gravity. It’s possible the creators of Edge of Tomorrow were inspired by the concept of closed timelike curves and tried to mimic a proposed physics concept with a fictional time loop conceit.

Lloyd suggests imagining entering the handle of a coffee mug and exiting through the same handle back to an earlier point in time. In theory, closed timelike curves would let you return to an earlier point in time and eventually wind back in the future — such as in other time travel movies like Looper . (Lloyd’s research group also simulated one kind of model of closed timelike curves .)

“There are some physicists who thought that certain kinds of time loops might be possible. For instance, Kurt Gödel suggested that the entire Universe might form a time loop if it rotated in the correct way,” Effingham says

Is Edge of Tomorrow Realistic — At All?

Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt in The Edge of Tomorrow.

Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt in The Edge of Tomorrow .

While Lloyd thinks time loops serve as fun narrative devices, he’s not sure about how they fit into our current understanding of physics.

“We don't know how to make them consistent with the laws of physics,” Lloyd says, adding, “the physics version of it doesn't really allow you to reset time.”

Lloyd says it doesn’t make sense that you would have different memories every time you go through the loop — as in Edge of Tomorrow . For her part, Yunger Halpern would logically expect the dead body of Tom Cruise’s character, Cage, to end up in the past — not a living version of him.

“The problem there is that if you die at the end of the loop, then you're not available to go through the loop again. So that's my sticking point,” Lloyd adds.

“It is not known whether the laws of physics allow time loops (closed timelike curves) on very small scales,” Friedman says. He says that incredibly tiny loops smaller than a proton — lasting 10^-43 seconds or with size 10^-33 centimeters — could theoretically be possible, but it’s unknown. He explains that macroscopic time loops to transport a human require negative energy — a difficult feat to achieve.

“I think its highly unlikely that there are macroscopic time loops,” Friedman adds.

Other experts are even more unequivocal.

“In the same way physics doesn’t allow for mind control and possession — even outside of time travel scenarios! — Edge of Tomorrow is sheer fantasy,” Effingham says.

Effingham says physics typically speculates about whether physical bodies can go back in time, but in Edge of Tomorrow , Cage is “psychically” time traveling and his future consciousness takes over his past body — a concept far beyond the bounds of physics.

The Mimic aliens in Edge of Tomorrow .

Samuel Kuypers , a postdoctoral researcher in theoretical physics at the USI (Università della Svizzera italiana) who is researching a model of time travel, tells Inverse the only way Edge of Tomorrow makes sense from a physics perspective is if it’s “some kind of time travel where maybe his consciousness is the thing traveling back in time — maybe it's just pure data that's sent back on the closed timelike curve.”

So, if the aliens had some kind of superior technology that allowed them to send Cage’s memories back on a closed timelike curve, the movie can clear at least one logical hurdle. But Kuypers has an even more interesting theory: Edge of Tomorrow isn’t actually a triumphant action movie where the good guys save the day — at least not in every universe.

According to physicist David Deutsch’s model of closed timelike curves, we can avoid logical problems with time travel — like the grandfather paradox — by assuming there are parallel timelines, which physicists refer to as Everett’s “ many worlds theory .”

“Time travel can only be made sense of because you travel to another timeline,” Kuypers says.

Applying this logic to Edge of Tomorrow , it naturally follows that Cage only succeeds to save the world from aliens in one timeline. In every other timeline, he dies in vain and humanity gets obliterated by blue-goo-dumping alien beings.

“My main observation about the movie is that we might have watched a tragedy without knowing that’s what we watched,” Kuypers says.

But whether you see Edge of Tomorrow as a tragic attempt to defeat aliens across time and space or a heroic Hollywood victory, one thing’s undeniable: It’s one hell of an entertaining reboot of the time loop genre.

Edge of Tomorrow is streaming now on HBO Max.
