Responsibilities

As a Vagabond Tours Sales & Reservation Executive you will:

• Manage each lead throughout the customer journey using a structured lead management process.
• Using a blend of the company booking and CRM systems, enter guest details as required for tracking, visibility and tour allocation.
• Liaise with the Operations team to ensure the right people are on the right tour at the right time and in the right place.
• Prepare documents for each tour, outlining hotels, guest details and activities planned or booked.
• Book accommodations and activities, as requested.
• Participate in and/or lead cross-department projects. For example, our sustainability Green Team.

Our tours come in two distinct styles:

• 🛶 Vagabond Adventure Tours  - Fast-paced, adrenaline-filled and active.

VagaGuides are expected to deliver both experiences to guests.

No matter which tour style you lead, we are passionate about the fantastic experience delivered to our guests, requiring the highest level of dedication and professionalism from all our team.

In return, we invest considerable time and effort into developing people into our guiding roles.

Our customers come from all over the world and across a wide spectrum of ages and backgrounds. But what they have in common is that they are all here to relax, unwind and enjoy Ireland.

Each Vagabond or Driftwood Tour lasts between 5-12 days. It is hard work and you will be away from home, but it is also great fun, a healthy way of life and very rewarding (you also get a great tan).

Plus the pay is OK too. (Season runs from mid-March to the end of October).

Duties include but are not limited to:

• Preparation of vehicle for trip including
• Ensure it is clean, has all required kit and equipment
• Performing and submitting morning and evening checks
• Ensuring vehicle is kept in a roadworthy condition throughout the tour and timely reporting of defects
• Safety (including safe driving) and contentment of your groups
• Excellent all round knowledge of Ireland - history, culture, education, economy and Irish life in general.
• Embarking guests and their luggage each morning
• Full delivery of tour information throughout tour
• Organising activities, walks etc on tour
• Accompanying customers on walks and at attractions
• Checking in guests to accommodations at end of each day
• Ensuring all admin tasks are completed in a timely fashion (e.g., double checking accommodation allocation)
• Timely reporting of all incidents involving customers or which may impact on the company
• Cleaning of vehicles to expected standard
• Cleaning vehicle inside and out
• Ensuring all vehicle fluids are topped up (fuel, oil, water, additives, coolant and brake fluid)
• Post tour vehicle checks
• Other duties as required: These may vary, and activities outside the role of driver-guide would be optional.

Requirements

Class D or D1 Passenger Carrying Vehicle Licence - If you are looking for work for the 2023 and 2024 season, don't yet have a D or D1 licence, but have begun the process, then feel free to apply. (Vagabond will also partially assist financially with the cost obtaining the D1 licence. This support is paid after the successful applicant’s first touring season).

Tourism or touring experience would be an advantage but not essential. Customer service experience is also handy.

A ‘People Person’- Patient, outgoing, independent, with initiative, reliable, punctual, personable. You don’t have to be the life and soul of the party, but good interpersonal skills are a must.

• Successful candidates will be provided with extensive training including:
• 4-5 weeks in house training, including
• Team Training Week (great craic)
• On the road training (also great craic)
• Further training, if required:
• First aid training
• Manual Handling
• Lowland Leader or Mountain skills training

So let’s get down to the nitty gritty of what land tour guides and tour directors earn. This industry is by far catered to those who have a passion for travel as opposed to becoming rich, but there are some exciting benefits for those who work hard and acquire various skills over the years, including learning new languages, receiving advanced training, and learning some sporting skills for adventure tours.

Generally speaking, tour guides can earn between $50 and $150 per day taking a lot of factors into consideration such as experience, locations, training, type of tour, and others. Aside from this, many tour companies encourage their passengers to tip the tour guides, so this can bump up your salary dramatically. Some of the more experienced tour guides earn anywhere between $30,000 and $60,000 per year. A regular tipping policy offered is explained by this tour operator:

“ Tipping is a big part of the job – the pay anyway. Our policies differ depending on the tour, and we’ve got two types. The first is the all inclusive tour, where the company gives the guide extra pay as tips and the guests are not expected to pay any form of gratuities, as it is added into the price of the tour. The tips are normally $20 per day as a minimum, but you do get benefits, and these types of tours offer a salaried pay. The other type of tour is the one where guides get paid per day instead of a monthly salary, but then the guests will tip you at the end of every day according to how good you were. Customers almost always tip, and this is a great incentive to keep them happy the entire day of the tour. The last tour I worked, I made over $350 in just 5 days !”

Pay and Benefits

Receptor Service: This is where you meet tour groups at the airports or assist them at the train depot. This job normally pays around $10 to $15 per hour.

Tour Guide: An entry level tour guide or tour director without training will make about $8 to $15 per hour depending on the type of tour, and you get a free trip somewhere for the day. The more experienced tour guides will earn about $20 to $25 per hour with extra pay being offered after 8 hours.

Tour Directors/Managers: Trained and experienced tour directors normally earn between $250 and $350 per day and you also get paid time and a half if you lead overnight tour groups. These can last anywhere from 7 days to 27 days, so you are earning a good salary at the end of the tour.

The average hourly wage in the U.S for a land tour guide is $13 per hour, while the average annual salary for a tour guide is $23,000 in America.

‘Draconian’ council using learner driver parking wardens to issue fines

Labour-run Lambeth accused of exploiting ‘loophole’ to instruct moped riders who haven’t passed test to fight ‘war on motorists’

A Labour council is allowing “cowboy” parking wardens with learner plates to issue fines to fully qualified drivers.

Civil enforcement officers, being paid more than many nurses, are using mopeds without a full licence to drive around residential streets in south-west London and catch out motorists.

Lambeth has been accused of exploiting a “loophole” to rush wardens onto the streets collecting up to £35 million a year in parking penalties, by rolling out a fleet of learner mopeds.

Through a private contract with the parking firm Apcoa , wardens aged 18 and over are hired with CBT certificates – short for compulsory basic training – a foundation pathway towards a full moped or motorbike licence that is valid for two years.

The day-long course does not require a full practical or theory test and teaches a low level of riding skills.

The wardens are covered by higher-rate commercial insurance, but the private contractor and council have refused to confirm whether taxpayers are paying for this and renewal CBT certificates.

The Telegraph observed five hi-vis wardens riding these vehicles with red L-plates in the borough, enforcing rules around residential permits, visitors’ and parking tickets.

Richard Hughes, a pensioner, parked in Abbeville Village, an upmarket area of Clapham, to pick up food for his granddaughter.

The 75-year-old qualified driver of 40 years, who had parked in a bay that was suspended for building works which were nowhere to be seen, said it was “a bit odd” to be issued a ticket by a learner.

“It seems that there are loopholes and weaknesses in the system that means that it’s advantageous to them to be learners rather than to have passed their test,” he said.

“It’s a bit draconian... It’s a honey trap – they’re engineering it to catch people rather than improve the roads and improve the situation.”

The Telegraph observed how a warden on a learner moped issued a penalty on the unoccupied car around two minutes after it arrived, after trying to find the driver. The moped was also parked in a suspended bay with its L plate partially upturned, which could get six points on a licence under road laws.

Lambeth is thought to be one of a handful of councils using learner mopeds to issue parking fines, including for residents who have visitors. Job adverts show these wardens can be paid £29,000 a year, a higher starting salary than nurses.

Nearby Tory-run Bromley council is also advertising for a “Civil Enforcement Officer – Moped Rider”, paid £25,000 a year, which like Lambeth only requires a CBT certificate, carrying learner plates.

Both authorities have contracted Apcoa to run their parking services. In Lambeth, this contract since 2016 is valued at an estimated £35 million, raking in around the same amount in parking fines a year.

‘We use electric scooters’

Brian Gregory, policy director at Alliance of British Drivers, said: “It’s just more of this cowboy, Wild West enforcement mentality in local authorities – their attitude now is ‘let’s screw motorists and commercial vehicle drivers for every penny we can get out of them’.

“There needs to be, as there needs to be for speed enforcement cameras, an overarching objective regulatory body that can audit these people at a moment’s notice and if there is non-compliance then start fining them. That’s the only way to stamp this cowboy behaviour out.”

An Apcoa spokesman said: “Alongside foot patrols, scooters offer a low emission and versatile means for CEO’s to carry out their duties within a large borough – 80 per cent of the Apcoa mopeds operating in Lambeth are electric.

“These vehicles are driven in accordance with licence & DVLA regulations and all the Apcoa fleet is insured under a commercial agreement.”

The company said its mopeds were allowed to park safely in bays while issuing penalties and wardens “are not offered any incentive or reward based on the number of PCN’s they issue”, adding that they ensure “parking is fair and equitable for all” and provide a “reassuring uniformed presence”.

A Lambeth council spokesman said: “Our parking services help to keep the streets of our busy inner London borough safe and convenient. We use foot patrols and electric scooters to efficiently achieve that, all in line with relevant legislation.

“Penalty Charge Notices are only issued to people breaking the rules, and there are no targets attached to this work.”

A Department for Transport spokesman said: “Penalty charges related to parking in London are set by the Mayor of London, so this is a matter for Lambeth Council and TfL (Transport for London), however we expect all enforcement officers operating using a motor vehicle to comply with the law.”
