A LOCAL charity is marking its 40th anniversary this year by inviting people to get on their bikes for an exciting challenge in aid of compassionate care and support that positively impacts families affected by terminal illness.

The popular Tour de Moor biking challenge raising much-needed funds for St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth, which cares for patients in the Tavistock and Tamar Valley areas, returns to the rugged wilderness of Dartmoor in the autumn.

Sponsored by Print Copy Scan, a local supplier of printers and copiers, the event on Sunday, October 9 which starts and finishes at Yelverton , offers cyclists an adrenalin-packed adventure: the hill-filled, 52km mixed terrain route of mud, sweat and gears. Cycling at its fiercest for those aged 12 and above!

Alternatively, participants of nine years or older can take it down a gear and saddle up for 30km of tough riding over hills and through woods, and there’s also the ‘mini moor’, a gentle 11km ride along the tarmac paths of Drake’s Trail that’s suitable for all the family.

Not only does Tour de Moor cater for all cycling abilities, it also raises vital funds for the specialist care St Luke’s provides for patients and ensures they can make precious memories with loved ones in their final months, weeks and days. Funds raised will also help the hospice continue providing essential bereavement support for patients’ family and friends.

Having welcomed its first patients to Syrena House in Plymstock in 1982, today the hospice cares for patients in their own homes, at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust and at Turnchapel. Its critical service runs 365 days a year, covering Plymouth, South West Devon and East Cornwall.

Penny Hannah, head of fundraising at St Luke’s, said: ‘If ever there was a time to get on your bike to help keep the wheels of our specialist service turning, it’s this one – our charity’s 40th anniversary year.

‘Over the four decades since St Luke’s began, it has been our privilege to have made a difference to many hundreds of local families. So, if someone special to you was looked after by our team, taking on the challenge of Tour de Moor is a fantastic way to pay tribute to them.

‘Regardless of your motivation for participating though, our epic event is a great combination of fitness and muddy fun. With three classic routes to choose from, it’s ideal for families as well as more experienced cyclists who really want to push themselves.

‘Every hill climb will be worth the extra effort because the sponsorship money Tour de Moor raises is needed more than ever to help St Luke’s meet the rising demand on our service. We want to be here for the next 40 years – and beyond – to ensure that no-one in the local area misses out on the high-quality care they need, and deserve, at the end of their lives.’

Director of Print Copy Scan, Karl Welburn, said: ‘St Luke’s has given four decades of superb service, helping local families who rely on the team’s care and support at the toughest time of their lives, but as a community we must never take what the charity provides for granted.

‘We’re proud to sponsor Tour de Moor again, especially with this year being the 40th anniversary of the hospice. All the money raised by those taking part goes directly to bespoke care for terminally ill people living in the local area.’

The Tour de Moor challenge departs from 8.30am at Harrowbeer Airfield, Yelverton, and finishes there.

BLOG: Tour de Moor: Cyclists’ support that helps keep the wheels of local hospice care turning

Cyclists’ support that helps keep the wheels of local hospice care turning.

It was big, it was bold and it turned Dartmoor blue, raising vital funds for our compassionate care.

On Sunday 9 October, over 1,000 cyclists of all ages and abilities proudly donned their branded blue tee-shirts and took to the saddle for our annual cycling challenge, Tour de Moor , in support of the vital care we provide for local families affected by terminal illness.

Located on the rugged wilds of Dartmoor, participants pitted themselves against the toughest, hill-filled terrain for 52km, taking it down a gear for the 30km route or opting for the more gentle, 11km ride along the tarmac paths of Drake’s Trail.

Sponsored by local company Print Copy Scan Ltd , Tour de Moor helps support the specialist services we provide free of charge to our patients, reaching across Plymouth and into rural areas, including Tavistock, Dartmoor and the South Hams.

Taking on the 52km for his second year was Steve from Tavistock “There’s downhills, a lot of uphill’s, the climbs are horrible but when you get to the top at Princetown the views are amazing and it is so rewarding when you get to the finish. This year I am taking in part in memory of my Grandad who died a few weeks ago of cancer. St Luke’s were there from the start of the diagnosis, to treatment and until his passing. I must say St Luke’s were with the family step by step and provided an unbelievable service, you couldn’t ask for a better charity. It was unbelievable”.

Joining him was Steve Hodge from Plymouth “I’m cycling today for a good friend of mine, Matthew Reynolds who had his 50 th birthday in late August and died the week after. He had such great care in St Luke’s, they made it more comfortable for him and extended that support to the whole family. It is such a great local charity, getting involved in an event like this is just nice to give something back”.

But it is not all mud, sweat and hills, Tour de Moor also has a more gentle 11km family route along Drakes Trail. Making it a family day out was English folk singer, songwriter Seth Lakeman and his son Morley. Seth cycling in memory of a good friend, said: “It is so important to support a charity like this, St Luke’s have touched people in so many different ways. I can’t imagine a Devon without St Luke’s, the end of life care and what they achieve is almost hard to fathom. I think these sort of moments when you are pushing yourself physically I felt quite emotional crossing the line and thought of those people who aren’t around anymore and how St Luke’s have helped them”.

And, with 2022 marking 40 years since we welcomed our first patients, in 1982, for each and every Tour de Moor participant there was the pride of receiving a special commemorative medal on their completion of the challenge.

tour of the moor 2022

St Luke’s Head of Fundraising, Penny Hannah, said: “It was incredibly moving to see so many cyclists turn out in support of our charity’s compassionate care for families going through the toughest of times.

“All our Tour de Moorers should feel incredibly proud because it is their support – and that of everyone who fundraises and volunteers for us – that will help us keep doing what we do for the next 40 years and beyond. Huge thanks to everyone who took part in this year’s challenge, our volunteers, Dartmoor National Park, Maristow Estate, David May Motor Service’s, The Hire Shop, Appleby Westward and Rapid Relief Plymouth all for whom we could not put on an event of this scale. You have done your community proud!”

2024 Zurich Classic leaderboard, scores: Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry among leaders after Round 1

Mcilroy and lowry headline a crowded leaderboard as the competition moves to foursomes for friday.

rory-mcilroy-shane-lowry-round-1-2024-zurich-classic-g.jpg

There aren't many firsts left for Rory McIlroy to achieve in his PGA Tour career, but he checked one off the list Thursday at TPC Louisiana. Making his debut appearance in the Zurich Classic, the 34-year-old looked like the seasoned veteran he is alongside Ryder Cup teammate Shane Lowry. The two fired an 11-under 61 in the four-ball format amid the windy afternoon conditions to sit with the teams of Ryan Brehm and Mark Hubbard, Aaron Rai and David Lipsky and Ben Kohles and Patton Kizzire atop the leaderboard after Round 1.

While this week marks McIlroy's first attempt at claiming the PGA Tour's annual team event, it also represents his 11th start of the year as he continues to play through some relative early season struggles. McIlroy had no issues in the first round as he drove the ball beautifully, struck towering iron shots and picked apart the par-72 layout in unison with Lowry.

"You know that you sort of need to get off to a good start, and thankfully we did," McIlroy said. "We were 4 under through 4, which was really nice to see, and from there you've got some momentum and you're just trying to keep it going. But for the most part today, we kept both balls in play. We were having two looks basically on every hole at birdie, and that's the way you need to play better ball. Everyone thinks it's maybe a bit more gung ho than that, but as long as you have two balls in play off the tee, two balls on the green, I think you're always going to do pretty well in this format."

The two began their days with four birdies out the gate and tacked on a couple more to turn in 6-under 30. A birdie on No. 10 was followed with a disappointing par on the par-5 11th, but that did nothing to dampen their spirits. McIlroy struck his best iron of the day into the 12th when he feathered an 8 iron against the wind and to tap-in distance.

Rory McIlroy drops it close from 163 yards to set up birdie and move Lowry/McIlroy 8-under and three back. 🎯🤌 📺: Golf Channel & @peacock | @Zurich_Classic pic.twitter.com/Z4Bv95PD8m — Golf Channel (@GolfChannel) April 25, 2024

Lowry picked him up on the very next hole with a birdie of his own to get the team to 9 under and added another on the difficult par-3 14th to get to double digits under par. With four holes remaining, the two appeared likely to overtake the clubhouse lead, but a couple middling pars to go along with one last birdie on the par-5 18th meant there will be four teams sleeping on the lead tonight before the competition transitions to foursomes on Friday.

Let's take a look around the rest of the leaderboard after the first round in Louisiana.

The leaders

T1. Rory McIlroy/Shane Lowry, David Lipsky/Aaron Rai, Ryan Brehm/Mark Hubbard, Ben Kohles/Patton Kizzire (-11)

Outside McIlroy and Lowry, the top of the leaderboard is surprising, to say the least. Hubbard has notched a couple top 20s, a top five and has yet to miss a cut this season while Rai has been solid, but the rest of the lot haven't seen the weekend with much consistency. Hubbard's teammate, Brehm, has seven missed cuts in 11 starts. Rai's teammate, Lipsky, has missed eight cuts in 11 starts and is without a top 40. Kizzire has six missed cuts and a withdrawal in nine starts, and Kohles has six missed cuts and a withdrawal in 11 starts. Four-ball can hide deficiencies, but the same cannot be said for foursomes, which will be played Friday and Sunday.

"Just like usual, we ham-and-egged it," Hubbard said. "I don't think either of us were feeling amazing about our games coming into the day, but we just feed off each other really well. We relax each other out there, and best ball is just a fun format. I didn't putt great last week, but he had a lot of holes where he snuggled it up there nice and close for par and it really freed me up. You just kind of get confidence that way, and I think even you watching me make some putts gave you confidence and you poured them in at the end."

Other contenders

T5. Davis Thompson/Andrew Novak, Thomas Detry/Robert MacIntyre, Cameron Champ/MJ Daffue (-10) T8. Sam Stevens/Paul Barjon, Garrick Higgo/Ryan Fox, Luke List/Henrik Norlander, Corey Conners/Taylor Pendrith, Zac Blair/Patrick Fishburn, Marc Meissner/Austin Smotherman, Callium Tarren/David Skinns, Keith Mitchell/Joel Dahmen (-9)

Detry and MacIntyre got off to a dream start by playing their first four holes in 4 under. After hitting a lull, the two turned it on and carded six back-nine birdies to shoot 10-under 62. MacIntyre has the team experience from this past fall's Ryder Cup, while Detry has been enjoying a very solid 2024 campaign. The staying power of all these teams on this leaderboard is interesting given the volatility of foursomes, but the two Europeans should be up to the task.

I think it's about leaving each other to it," MacIntyre said regarding Friday's strategy. "We're both good players, both know what we're doing with the golf ball. It's just trusting each other. If I hit a good shot, you hit a good shot. If you hit a bad shot, don't say sorry, you're not meaning to do it. You just keep walking forward and keep trying to hit good shots and committing to them and see where we end up. Can't really do anything about it. It's difficult because you might not hit a 5-foot putt until the 17th hole. It's completely different. All you can do is try your best."

2024 Zurich Classic updated odds, picks

Odds via Sportsline consensus

  • Rory McIlroy/Shane Lowry: 13/5
  • Xander Schauffele/Patrick Cantlay: 10-1
  • Aaron Rai/David Lipsky: 15-1
  • Thomas Detry/Robert MacIntyre: 16-1
  • Andrew Novak/David Thompson: 16-1
  • Nick Taylor/Adam Hadwin: 18-1
  • Corey Conners/Taylor Pendrith: 18-1
  • Joel Dahmen/Keith Mitchell: 20-1

Let's roll with the 2022 champion at 10-1. Schauffele and Cantlay burned a ton of edges on Thursday but kept themselves in it with a late flurry of birdies. They now transition to foursomes for two of the next three days where they were dominant a year ago. In 2023, the two fired a 9-under 63 in Round 2 and a 6-under 66 in Round 4 in this format. If they card something similar in the mid 60s tomorrow, they should be in business heading into the weekend.

Celine Dion was diagnosed with Stiff Person Syndrome in 2022 and is opening up about how she’s learning to live with the rare autoimmune neurological disorder.

In a new interview, the Canadian singer discusses her health and says if she’ll return to touring.

Celine Dion Makes Surprise Appearance At The Grammys Amid Stiff Person Syndrome Diagnosis

She continued, “Five days a week I undergo athletic, physical and vocal therapy. I work on my toes, my knees, my calves, my fingers, my singing, my voice… I have to learn to live with it now and stop questioning myself. At the beginning I would ask myself: why me? How did this happen? What have I done? Is this my fault?”

Dion says she doesn’t have the answers as to why she got this illness and she only has two options, “Either I train like an athlete and work super hard, or I switch off and it’s over, I stay at home, listen to my songs, stand in front of my mirror and sing to myself. I’ve chosen to work with all my body and soul, from head to toe, with a medical team. I want to be the best I can be. My goal is to see the Eiffel Tower again!”

The “My Heart Will Go On” singer says that it’s her family, children, and fans that keep her strong and is grateful she has the means to have good doctors and treatments, adding, “I have this strength within me. I know that nothing is going to stop me.”

Since being diagnosed with SPS, Dion has been largely kept out of the public eye. In February of this year, she made a surprise appearance at the Grammys and presented an award to Taylor Swift .

When asked about getting back on stage and touring again, Dion said, “I can’t answer that… Because for four years I’ve been saying to myself that I’m not going back, that I’m ready, that I’m not ready… As things stand, I can’t stand here and say to you: ‘Yes, in four months’ [I will return]. I don’t know… My body will tell me.”

Scottie scheffler 10th all-time in pga tour money by winning often but also winning the big ones, share this article.

tour of the moor 2022

AUGUSTA, Ga. — There’s winning and then there’s winning at the right time. Scottie Scheffler continues to do both.

With his second Masters victory, good for $3.6 million, and yet another signature event win, the 2024 RBC Heritage, Scheffler has amassed $61,258,464 in career on-course earnings on the PGA Tour. That figure has put him into the top 10 all-time , jumping him two spots past Matt Kuchar and Jason Day.

Tiger Woods leads the list at $120 million and while Scheffler has a long way to go, he’s now more than halfway there as a six-year veteran.

Then again, Scheffler is playing in this big-money era of signature events and elevated purses, but to his credit, he’s also winning the bigger-money events.

His 10 wins include two Masters, two Players (the richest event on the PGA Tour), two Arnold Palmer Invitationals, two WM Phoenix Opens (one of which was a signature event) as well as a Match Play and now the RBC.

Scottie Scheffler’s 10 PGA Tour wins

  • 2022 WM Phoenix Open: $1,476,000
  • 2022 Arnold Palmer Invitational: $2,160,000

Whos up for more Tour of the Moor?

We are currently looking at a mid May date again to keep the costs down. Nothing set in stone yet.

Just wanted to know from you guess, were you happy with the length (miles) of the 2022 Tour ? I've got a route in mind, just don't wanna go too big.

Will keep you all updated when the date is confirmed and tickets go on sale.

I’d be up for it and would be looking at staying the following week on holiday if I can park my car and trailer somewhere safe.

Are you looking for somewhere safe on site, or somewhere local to leave it? If the latter  welcome to leave it with us for a week.

Thanks Scott, we were so impressed with the coastal/ village part of last years run it would be nice to spend a bit more time down there. It’s a bloody long haul down then the the tour and then back up again in 3 days. I’ll PM you a bit more closer the the date if that’s ok.

No problem Col. It won't be inside but we have space behind gates and are fairly secluded.

Ahhhhhh nuts......

Classic ford have announced thier show on the same weekend we was gonna do the tour.

I know which one I'd prefer to do.

Tricky one.......

Eggplant

I am def up for this, regardless of any possible clash with Classic Ford. Myself and my kids had a great time on the 2022 Tour. Great Tour, Great Campsite, Great people. What's not to like ? I know one or two others that may join too.

It is and it isn't. I think a lot of the scene has moved on from static shows and want to enjoy their cars out in groups on the road. The problem is if we go later, the campsite is into mid and peak seasons so the costs are much higher

I’m definitely up for the tour, there are enough local static car shows throughout the season to keep me happy with a good variety of makes and models, It takes me nearly 2 hours just to travel out of Cornwall sometimes so the closer the better for me!

I think thats for driving it all the way? I dont think it counts most of the journey in a cargo container and then I have to arrange the car to get there as well. 🤔

Tour of the Moor would be the obvious choice for me, the 'classic' cars are getting more modern at every show........ pluss 2 hours to escape!

I have what's considered to be both, with a Mk2 Escort and a Mk3 Mondeo ST.  However, we went to Ford Fair at Silverstone this year and said that would be the last time we attend, for the exact reasons you have stated.

Definitely up for this. we look forward to it every year, last year we did a scenic car tour to Belgium. Which was expensive and OK ish. then we did totm and it was substantially cheaper and much much much much better,

Thanks

Rafael Nadal advanced to the third round at the Madrid Open after his victory over Alex de Minaur on Saturday.

Rafael Nadal Nets First Top 20 Win Since 2022 With Victory at Madrid Open

  • Author: Tim Capurso

Rafael Nadal defeated world No. 11 Alex de Minaur 7–6 (6), 6–3 in the second round of the Madrid Open on Saturday, earning his first ATP Tour victory vs. an opponent ranked inside the top 20 since November of 2022.

Nadal, 37, at times showed flashes of the form that helped him win 22 Grand Slams in his career. The Spaniard had his signature, lefty forehand-down-the-line shot working well, in addition to his crosscourt backhand, which he fired for winners multiple times.

Nadal, with a raucous crowd behind him, won a thrilling, 77-minute first set in a tiebreak, then quickly broke de Minaur's serve to grab a second set lead he would not relinquish.

When told during a post-match interview that it seemed like "the old Rafa Nadal was back," Nadal pushed back on the notion.

Are we beginning to see the return of the old Rafael Nadal? 🤩 @RafaelNadal #MMOPEN pic.twitter.com/cKrwHWYYmN — Tennis TV (@TennisTV) April 27, 2024

"No, no, no not yet," Nadal said with a laugh. "It needs time, and I think for moments have been good level of tennis. I was able to do positive things but still on and off."

Nadal missed nearly the entire 2023 season after requiring surgery on his hip, an injury that had the decorated tennis pro pondering retirement going into 2024. On Wednesday, Nadal would not fully commit to playing in the French Open, a tournament he has won a record 14 times.

If he can maintain the form he displayed Saturday while staying healthy, it's likely he'll be on the court at Roland Garros when the French Open begins on May 20.

New Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Foreigner will bid farewell to Missouri this summer

tour of the moor 2022

In the sports world, fans rarely have a chance to see a star play after being named to their game's hall of fame.

In music, the opportunity remains rare but comes around a bit more often. Classic-rock fans will get that chance — at least three of them — starting this summer when newly-minted Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Foreigner swing through the Show Me State.

The hall's 2024 class was named Sunday; Foreigner joins the likes of A Tribe Called Quest, Cher, Dave Matthews Band, Mary J. Blige and more to be inducted in a future ceremony.

Foreigner's three scheduled Missouri dates are part of a farewell tour running through the end of 2024, and possibly beyond. Closest to home here in Columbia, the band will play the Missouri State Fair in Sedalia Aug. 8 with Maggie Rose. Tickets are $50-$60.

First though, the band will play Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre in the St. Louis area June 18; Foreigner will also play Ozarks Amphitheater in Camdenton Oct. 4.

Before the band hits its final stride, here's a quick look at Foreigner, by the numbers.

Foreigner, by the numbers

1976: The year British guitarist Mick Jones formed the band in New York City.

1: The highest American chart position achieved by one of Foreigner's singles; "I Want to Know What Love Is," the band's only No. 1 stateside hit, topped the charts in 1984.

9: The amount of Top 10 hits the band scored in the U.S., starting with 1977's "Feels Like the First Time" and ending with "I Don't Want to Live Without You" in 1988.

2009: The date of the band's most recent album release, "Can't Slow Down"; AllMusic scribe Stephen Thomas Erlewine said the record "sounds like it could have been a hit in the late '80s."

2003: The end of star singer Lou Gramm's official run in Foreigner, though he has popped up and on stage with the band on a few occasions.

1: Number of original Foreigner members left: Jones is the only remaining founder, though several of the current members have been around for some time, including singer Kelly Hansen since 2005.

Jones' touring role has been limited for some time by Parkinson's disease.

"As to whether I get up on stage and perform hasn’t really been decided as yet," Jones told Billboard about the forthcoming Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony . "In some ways it might be nice just to be there to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy being inducted."
