The Forks Winnipeg: One Of Canada’s Hippest Urban Parks Is Waiting For You

The Forks Winnipeg

Located at the junction of two of Manitoba’s most important rivers, the Forks Winnipeg has developed into one of Canada’s hippest urban parks.

The Forks Winnipeg

The Forks Winnipeg may not jump to mind when you’re thinking about the best urban parks in Canada. But this once-overlooked junction of the Red River and Assiniboine River has become one of the most talked-about urban attractions in the country. And after hearing so much excitement about Winnipeg’s up and coming tourism industry, I just had to go and check it out for myself. I packed up my 5-year-old son D and we hopped on a flight to check out the Forks Winnipeg and all of the rest of the amazing things to do in Winnipeg Manitoba .

We booked ourselves into one of the most sought after hotels in Winnipeg , situated right in the Forks. Once we were checked in and unpacked, I threw open the window, and from that view alone, I understood. The Forks in Winnipeg is one truly special place. And after doing some research, I learned that not only is it one of the most popular spots to visit in Winnipeg now, but it has been for the last 6,000 years!

What Is Winnipeg’s The Forks?

Table of Contents

Long before the Europeans colonized Canada, the Indigenous people of Manitoba would us the confluence of the Red River and Assiniboine River as a meeting place. The waters gave access to many nations for social and trade partnerships. With the arrival of the Europeans, the rivers gave convenient access to fur traders. This led to the development of some of the earliest Hudson Bay Company fur trading posts back in 1670.

Before long, Winnipeg had become one of Canada’s fastest-growing cities. But over time, the Forks were abandoned as a social area. Large rail yards and warehouses sprung up and the area was industrialized. The Forks was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1974 which led to some protections by Parks Canada. Since then a revitalization has occurred leading to what is now one of the best urban parks in Canada.

Some of these revitalizations have included the development of the Museum For Human Rights, the update of the rail buildings in The Forks Market, and the building of the gorgeous Louis Riel Bridge linking downtown Winnipeg with the nearby St. Boniface French Quarter across the Assiniboine River.

What To Do In The Forks Winnipeg

Whether you live in the city, traveling to Winnipeg, or transiting through to other Manitoba destinations like Churchill, a visit to the Manitoba Forks must make your list of things to do in Winnipeg . There are just so many great things to do in the Forks that it is worth a whole day of your time. In fact, you could easily spend more than a day here and still not see it all. But here are some of my top choices for attractions in the Forks Winnipeg.

Canadian Museum For Human Rights

The Canadian Museum For Human Rights is the crown jewel of The Forks in Winnipeg. This absolutely stunning building is an artistic masterpiece. The Human Rights Museum in the Forks was designed by Antoine Predock in a Gerryesque style that is not only visually gorgeous from the outside, but the inside takes visitors on a journey from the darkness and into the light.

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights is filled with thought-provoking exhibits telling the story of both human rights abuses, and successes in modern history. These presentations serve to both humble and inspire visitors to the museum. And as an added bonus, the high point of the museum offers the best panoramic view of the Winnipeg Forks. The exhibits may have flown above the head of my 5-year-old, but older kids will leave with many questions. And the professional staff of the CMHR Winnipeg does a wonderful job of helping kids come to their own answers.

The Forks Winnipeg Skateboard Park

The Winnipeg Forks isn’t just for cool people like you and me. Apparently when Canada’s largest urban skateboard park attracts riff-raff like professional skateboarder Tony Hawk too! In fact, the Hawk even landed his patented McTwist here in 2007. The Forks Skateboard Plaza covers over 4087 sq meters (44,000 sq ft) of bowls, stairs, plaza, and rails. During the summer the Forks Plaza is filled with people of all ages testing their mettle.

Oodena Celebration Circle

Situated directly across from the Inn at the Forks near the confluence of the Red River and Assiniboine River is the Oodena Celebration Circle. A glimpse at this special part of the Winnipeg Forks and you instantly realize that it has seen ages of history. The Oodena Celebration Circle fulfills the history of the Forks as a destination for cultural celebrations. In fact, the name Oodena, in Ojibwa, means “Heart of the Community.” And the Forks is truly the heart of Winnipeg.

The Oodena Celebration Circle circle consists of a series of detailed walls facing inward toward a ceremonial fire pit. Each wall is carved with celestial markers from civilizations throughout the history of the world. It’s worth spending some time exploring each unique design, and even coming back to experience the Circle at night time.

The best of Manitoba The Forks Winnipeg

Johnston Terminal

If you’re looking for great shopping experiences at the Winnipeg Forks, Johnston Terminal is where the action is. This four-story former railway warehouse is now a funky shopping center. Johnston Terminal in The Forks is filled with cool boutiques, stores, cafe’s and restaurants. Make sure to head to the basement of Johnston Terminal to explore the endless rows of fascinating antiques.

Esplanade Riel

The Esplanade Riel is arguably the most attractive bridge in Winnipeg. This beautiful, gleaming-white pedestrian walkway connects the Forks to St. Boniface on the opposite side of the Assiniboine River. The bridge was named in honor of Louis Riel , a Canadian hero, and leader of both Manitoba and the Metis First Nation.

Esplanade Riel is the only bridge in North America that also houses a restaurant. Currently, Mon Amis Louis brasserie makes it home on one of Winnipeg’s most iconic landmarks.

Esplanade Riel The Forks Winnipeg

The Forks Rail Cars

As anyone who has driven along the Trans-Canada Highway through the prairies knows, trains are as much a part of the landscape of Manitoba as the wheat fields. The Forks has long been and still is, a central hub for the railways in Canada. To commemorate this, the main area outside the Forks Market is lined with restored railcars. Kids of all ages will love climbing on and exploring around these monuments to the industrialization of the nation.

Splash Dash Boat Tours

Along the River Walk in the Forks is the marina for the Splash Dash Boat Tours . Jump on this 30-minute Winnipeg river cruise to experience the city from a unique angle. The Splash Dash Tour in Winnipeg offers a humourous and historic glimpse into what has made Winnipeg such a central (pardon the pun) part of Canadian history for the past 350 years.

Winnipeg Legislative Assembly Hermetic Code Tour

The Forks River Walk And Historic Port

There are a hundred different ways to walk through the Forks Winnipeg. One of those ways that you shouldn’t miss is the Forks River Walk. The Forks River Walk follows the edge of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers from the Forks Historic Amphitheater to the Legislative Building. The walk offers scenic views of the St. Boniface Cathedral and goes right through the Forks Historic Port, a perfect spot to stop for a beverage.

Things To Do In Winnipeg The Forks With Kids

If you’re like me and you’re visiting Winnipeg with kids, make sure to check out these family-friends things to do in the Forks Winnipeg. D and I had a riot exploring all of these fun attractions in the Forks.

Manitoba Children’s Museum

The tilted design of the Manitoba Children’s Museum stands out from the antique buildings that dominate the Winnipeg Forks. But far from being a new design, this building is actually the oldest surviving train repair facility in Manitoba. And this indoor children’s playground in Winnipeg keeps that locomotive flowing through its veins.

At the center of the Winnipeg Children’s Museum is a 1952 train engine linked to a 1920 passenger coach. Kids will love running through the train and seeing all of the great activities throughout. And far from being a classic antique coach, this thing is lit up inside like the Delorean from Back to the Future. But that’s not all there is to do at the Forks children’s museum. There is a water lab, physics stations, building yards, and multi-story playgrounds to explore.

Manitoba Children's Museum Winnipeg The Forks

Fort Parka Parks Canada Playground

If you’re looking for a great place to burn off some of that pent up childhood energy, the Fort Parka Parks Canada Playground is as good as it gets. This free children’s playground in the Forks has everything from group see-saws, complex climbing structures, and a children’s splash pad among many other fun things to do for kids in the Forks.

Where To Eat In The Forks

Whether you’re looking to tour the amazing things to do or not, you can bet that the Forks in Winnipeg is one of the best places to eat in the city. Not only are many of the restaurants set up throughout the historic rail terminals, but you can often take your food and drink and enjoy it by the river.

The Forks Market

The Forks Market is one of the most popular spots to eat in the Forks Winnipeg. This converted rail house now is now filled with shops, restaurants, and attractions. The Forks Market houses some of Winnipeg’s most popular restaurants including NuBurger , Passero , and the Common beer garden. If you’re hitting the Forks for breakfast, check out the giant pancakes at the Original Pancake House .

Anything that you order at the Forks Market can be enjoyed within the attractively antique building or outside among the summer revelers by the Assiniboine River. As the night wears on the Forks Market transforms from a casual dining area with an awesome hipster vibe into an attractively lit social destination, sometimes with live music and DJs.

Where To Eat In The Forks Market Winnipeg

The Old Spaghetti Factory

The Old Spaghetti Factory is an Italian Chain restaurant that can be found in a lot of great destinations in Canada . If you’re exploring the Forks with kids though, this restaurant is always a hit. They have decent prices and a great selection of classic Italian fare. You can either sit inside and enjoy the classic Tiffany lamp style of the chain or enjoy the outdoor patio for those cozy Winnipeg nights.

Smith Restaurant

If you’re looking for something upscale, but the busy atmosphere of Passero in the Forks is too much, check out Smith Restaurant inside the Inn at the Forks. The sizeable portions here are perfect for sharing. But you’ll have a chance to enjoy some great twists on modern cuisine. I love the “tasting table” style of food presentation that they offer. It makes for an intimate meal for couples or a small group.

Where To Stay In The Forks In Winnipeg

You may have guessed this from my earlier comments, but there is really only one place to consider if you’re interested in staying at the Forks in Winnipeg. The Inn at the Forks , which is home to the popular Riverstone Spa and the Smith Restaurant. The views from Inn at the Forks alone are worthy of the stay here. Many rooms look out over the Forks and onto the famous Museum for Human Rights and colorful Winnipeg sign.

Visiting The Forks in Winnipeg, Manitoba: Where the Past and Present Merge

The Forks, located where the Red and Assiniboine Rivers meet, has been a meeting place for over 6000 years. It has a storied history, but over the last 30 years, the city and province has turned this place into one of the province’s foremost destinations for tourists and locals alike.

The Forks in Winnipeg, Manitoba

Two families arrive at the juncture of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers to renew acquaintances with friends they have not seen for a year. During their visit, they make purchases of items they want and need for the weeks and months ahead as they wander near the forks of these two great rivers–more and more visitors arrive from throughout the nearby region–and before long, it resembles a full-on party—with dancing and revelry going deep into the night.

The year is 4000 BC, and it is at this place, which was the Aboriginal gathering place for a number of Manitoba tribes of that day.

A New Day Dawns at The Forks

The Oodena Celebration Circle is where indigenous culture comes alive for all to experience.

Between the early aboriginal occupancy and when the leaders of all three levels of government eventually made the commitment to revive what was becoming an abandoned and derelict part of the city, it was the centre of the early fur trade, the exchange yards for a number of railways, and an immigration centre welcoming new settlers from Europe and beyond.

Fast forward 6000 years from its early foundations, and in many ways, not much as changed from its core purpose. It is still one of history’s longest lasting trade centres.

Today, about four million people visit The Forks annually. Now a major riverside development, it has become not only the place where Manitobans meet but also a destination few visitors to the city of Winnipeg are likely to pass up when they are in town.

The Forks is a Place for Families and Friends

The Forks, Manitoba

In the same manner, my own family has a shared history of going to The Forks often to partake in many of the multitude of activity options available.

It began with pancakes for my children and later grandchildren in the Original Pancake Hous e (celebrating 65 years in 2023) when we visited the Forks Market. Later, it was regular visits to the Children’s Museum or skating in The Plaza, recognized as “Canada’s best and largest urban skate plaza and bowl complex.”

As skateboarding became uber-popular, the new “SK8 Park” was built to offer a safe and exciting venue for this ever-growing sport.

There is no season when my wife and I don’t meet friends for drinks, to watch entertainment in the Festival Plaza outdoor theatre, or to welcome in a New Year at Canada’s and Manitoba’s biggest celebration.

The Forks is “Manitoba Made”

Shops at The Forks

In the shops—we can always find “Manitoba Made ,” where new entrepreneurs offer locally created unique items and art.  The Forks Market Food Hall mirrors Manitoba’s welcoming multicultural nature–with menu items originating from the four corners of the globe, prepared by Manitoba’s newest and oldest brand names—some of which, like the pancake house, have been the foundation of Manitoba’s food scene for decades.

Zach Peters, The Forks Communications and Marketing Manager, outlined the nature of shops and food outlets they prefer to welcome, in addition to established favourites.

“We are always trying to be innovative,” he said. “Our shops, similar to our food vendors, we see as the entrepreneurial incubation space where owners feel they can test out an idea to see if it works.”

Wandering around the grounds of The Forks, at any given time, you will find a rotating selection of food trucks, with plenty of space to sit and enjoy these unique taste treats.

In this place, from whence the history of the city, the province–and even the west evolved, it is easy to enjoy The Forks experience over a number of days.

A Meeting Place Where History Is All Around You

With the Museum as a backdrop, visitors enjoy a concert in the Festival Plaza outdoor theatre.

New Canadians Arrive En Masse Via Rail

It’s immigration sheds, which operated between 1870 and 1920, processed thousands of people monthly, and the site became known as “The Gateway to the West.” Situated close to the original (and still an operating CN Station), arrivals from the east and the south could quickly make their way to share out their information to the agents who welcomed them.

Many of the greatest railway companies of the time helped make Winnipeg the connecting and transfer point for travellers, as well as for goods on their way to market.

Step inside any one of the still existing buildings (now part of The Forks Market), and you will appreciate why Winnipeg in its day was known as “Chicago of the North.”

It was only the building of the Panama Canal (which meant goods did not have to be loaded and offloaded to be shipped over land) that prevented Winnipeg from becoming as large as Chicago—and a great commerce center to the world.

This important link to history is part of the reason The Railroad Museum has been located at The Forks.

While The Forks may still be an active trade centre for visitors and locals, the range of activities and discoveries for people within The Forks are immense.

Honouring First Nations

The Forks was the traditional gathering place of the Cree, Ojibwe, Assiniboine, Dakota and Oji-Cree.

The history of its First Peoples—Cree, Ojibwe, Assiniboine, Dakota, and Oji-Cree–have been honoured in this, their traditional territory. As has the recognition that it is also recognized as the Birthplace of the Metis Nation–and the home of perhaps Canada’s most famous Metis, Louis Riel.

The Oodena Celebration Circle , meaning the heart of the city, is one of the areas where indigenous culture comes alive. Pow Wows and other entertaining and informative events are scheduled regularly. When programs are not taking place, it is also a quiet area in which to contemplate the importance of this confluence of rivers even to this day.

A few steps away, a curved wall marked with plaques along the way shows the foundations of this history. Using audio tour headphones, with narrations by those whose fore-parents have been the foundations for this history, they will lead you through the proof of the past and the promise of tomorrow on this sacred land.

Explore The Forks On Your Own Terms – By Foot or Boat!

Perhaps the most popular stroll, appropriately called the Riverwalk, follows the wind of the Assiniboine until it reaches the seat of Manitoba’s Government, the Provincial Legislative Buildings . It provides an introduction to the St Boniface Cathedral—located in the heart of what helped make Winnipeg one of the largest French communities outside of Quebec.

Saint Boniface is one of Winnipeg’s most exciting neighbourhoods , by the way.

The water taxi tour gives visitors a different view of the legislative buildings and an introduction to St. Boniface.

Don’t feel like walking? Hop aboard one of the Riverboat Tours , which will cruise you through these historic waters–giving a different view of the city and some of the wildlife that is often spotted along the shores, or sitting perched on some of the trees as you sail past.

Be there in winter, and in addition to the skate plaza, you can skate your way on the river, which has become one of the longest skating trails in the world. With a number of award-winning warming huts along the way, it truly is a different way to capture a feel for the city of Winnipeg.

Building the area into a tourist destination, with lots of unique attractions throughout the property is important, says Peters, but the goals are bigger than that.

Around The Forks, and inside The Forks Market building, there are spaces created just for people to rest, read, and play games like chess or checkers.

Zach Peters reinforced that these spaces are part of the culture The Forks has created as a centre “where the communal drive is hugely important–where people can come in and not spend a dime. We are Winnipeg’s meeting place. You and I could sit here for hours chatting and not have any issues—or we could choose a meal and spend a few bucks.”

For tourists, this is the place to come if “they want to come to a place where the locals hang out,” he added.

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights

A father walks with his son towards a stylish reflective building

Recognized world-wide for its unique design, it is what is inside that recognizes how important it is for us to stand up for the rights of all peoples. Even with an overview of past atrocities, it resonates with how our hopes for the future can be more brightly illuminated through the knowledge of what we must all do to prevent abuses of all kinds.

This February was my second visit to the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. The first was an interesting but superficial walk-through. This time, I spent almost six hours, and I could have stayed longer. There is no doubt the messaging will stay with me forever.

It does not hide or whitewash Canada’s sins in its history—Residential Schools, the expulsion of Acadians, and others—but it also demonstrates how Canada has stepped up to pass laws that have led to the capture and deportation of known criminals who have engaged in crimes against humanity.

Where to Stay

There is only one hotel right on The Forks property, but it is a good one. It is within minutes of every on-location attraction. The Inn at the Forks is a locally owned boutique-style hotel with a spa, banquet rooms, and, arguably, one of the best restaurants in the entire city. There are lots of free parking spots available, and for families, it is directly across from the Children’s Museum.

As much as there is to see and do at The Forks today, Peters indicates that this is only the first chapter, with many more exciting plans for the future.

Located at the junction of the Red and Assiniboine rivers, found artifacts like bones and stone tools are evidence of The Forks being a meeting place for more than 6,000 years. • The Top 10 Spring Things To Do at The Forks

Posted on Mar 29, 2016 by The Forks Market

We've said goodbye to our beloved Red River Mutual Trail (and winter), but it isn't quite time for soaking in the summer sun. So - what's there to do during the spring?! Here's a round-up of some fan favourites we think you'll love — whether this is your first time visiting The Forks, or you've lived here your whole life and you're due for a refresher.

1) Try the cinnamon buns from Tall Grass Prairie Bakery OR the mini donuts at The Mini Donuts Factory.

Both are sweet, soft and sugary classics. The Tall Grass Cinnamon Buns are baked fresh every single day (the smell is absolutely heavenly in the mornings), and they are made with ingredients from Manitoba (Manitoba organic cold-pressed sunflower oil, whole grain flour, and organic unbleached white flour). Mini donuts are little sugar-covered deep-fried rings of heaven, not to mention they are portable so you can walk and snack at the same time.

If you're not in the mood for something sweet, you can check out some of the other food kiosks and 6 full-service restaurants on site.

2) Visit the Travel Manitoba Visitor Information Centre

The place to go to find out about all the great things and hidden gems our province has to offer. This new building has interactive exhibits, including a "Heart Wall" to help you create a custom travel plan. Whether you're from out of town or just need a new adventure, Travel Counsellors are available to point you in the right direction. The Travel Manitoba Visitor Centr e is open daily from 9:30 am to 6:30 pm, and 9:30 am to 9 pm on Fridays.

3) Contemplate the world around you at The Canadian Museum for Human Rights

The exhibits and galleries in the nationally acclaimed Canadian Museum for Human Rights will leave you speechless, and the view from the tower will leave you breathless. Spend a day learning about human rights, walking through history in deep reflection, envisioning the future, and inspiring change. For hours and admission, visit their website for more information.

4) Rent a bicycle from White Pine Bicycle Co.

When your own two legs just won't do, rent a bike or unicycle from White Pine Bicycle Co. inside Johnston Terminal, and trek all 56 acres of The Forks on one or two wheels. Take your bike for a trek down the riverwalk, one of Winnipeg's most scenic urban walkways. If the riverwalk is flooded, don't fret, there are still plenty more paths to take!

5) Adventure through the Manitoba Children’s Museum

Crummy weather? Bored kids? Bring em' to the Manitoba Children's Museum to burn off some energy and learn something new! This award-winning museum has twelve permanent galleries with super-interactive exhibits, like the tumble zone, splash lab, and lasagna lookout. Open Sunday to Thurs 9:30 am to 4:30 pm, and Friday & Saturday 9:30 am to 6:00 pm.

6) Shop at The Forks Market

The Forks Market is full of independently owned and operated shops that all have something special to offer. You'll find wine, skateboards, soap, action figures and moccasins — talk about variety! Pop in for a walk about, you might be surprised what you'll find.

Bonus: The Forks Trading Company on the second floor sells strictly Manitoba made merchandise, including our "Roasted Nuts and Warming Huts" collaboration candle with Coal and Canary (check to see if it's in stock because it seems to keep selling out). They have a great selection of locally made goods you can't get elsewhere.

7) Listen to the buskers

Phil Natividad and his ukulele (singing his heart out in the picture below) is one of the buskers who adds to the ambience in The Forks Market. Nearly a hundred buskers audition in front a panel of judges each year, and a select group are chosen and awarded with busker passes to perform at The Forks. Grab a coffee and enjoy the sounds from all sorts of musical backgrounds. Fiddlers, guitar players and singers park themselves at our busk stops daily to play music for your enjoyment.

8) Relax at The Inn at The Forks

Need a day to relax? Check yourself in at Inn at The Forks for the full treatment: start your escape at Riverstone Spa with a spa treatment, followed by some fine comfort food and craft cocktails at SMITH Restaurant, and cap it off with getting some rest in a room with a view. Who says you can't find peace and quiet in downtown Winnipeg?

9) Take the kiddos to a play at Manitoba Theatre for Young People

With musicals and plays catered to kids, MTYP will spark their imaginations and entertain them. MTYP also offers theatre school for the little ones who want to get into acting. Visit the MTYP website to see this season's lineup and to buy tickets.

10) Take in the view of the city from the tower

Take the elevator, or hike up the stairs up for the best view of The Forks and downtown Winnipeg from our look-out tower. Bring a camera to capture the experience.

BONUS: Come to The Forks and choose your own adventure! Mix and match from the list above, or go for a walk around the site and explore The Forks to find your own hidden jem.

Located at the junction of the Red and Assiniboine rivers, The Forks (also known as Nestawaya in Cree) has been a meeting place for over 6,000 years – located on the original lands of the Anishinaabe, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota and Lakota peoples and resides in the homeland of the Red River Métis. This place also has deep ties with Dene and Inuit peoples, operates with water from Shoal Lake 40 First Nation, and has welcomed people from all walks of life to trade, visit, and build community. In this spirit, all staff and administration here respect the Treaties that were made on these territories, acknowledge the harms and mistakes of the past, and dedicate ourselves to move forward in partnership with Indigenous communities in a spirit of reconciliation and collaboration.
