Bought £2,000 worth of US dollars

Used an internet comparison site for best Dollar/GBP exchange rate- eurochange the best for collection in local area. Ordered and paid online and collected the next day. Very quick and easy process.

Staff member in Redhill branch (Jake PR) was very polite and helpful. Was a good experience, will definitely use again.

Sold currency

I had a great experience with Rajesh P. at the Eurochange location just outside the Paddington Underground station in September 2023. I went to him in a rush since I was on my way to Heathrow Airport and the Tube machines wouldn't accept my remaining coins to pay for my return fare to the airport. Rajesh noticed the pound coin and the 50 pence coin I was using were actually one no longer in circulation in England (!) - how I ended up with very old coins out of circulation for years after having only been in town one week I'll never know. But he was so kind in helping me out and was so friendly in doing so. Great customer service! Thanks to him.

Thank you for your 5-star review, we really appreciate it!

We're absolutely delighted to hear that Rajesh provided you with such friendly and helpful service during your time in need!

We have passed on your feedback to Rajesh's management team, and we hope you have a wonderful day.

Bought £1 worth of Euros

I researched the best exchange rate and eurochange came up at 1.16, when I got there it was only 1.12, but as I had made a special journey I thought I would proceed. I asked to exchange my cash and was asked for my passport! I didn't have it, so he turned me away. I scrolled through the images on my phone in case I had taken a photograph of it, but I hadn't :-( then I remembered I had 3 types of photographic ID. I queued again and was told no, only a passport. The man serving was also quite abrasive. So after spending money on petrol and parking, I ended up with no euros and being left disappointed and angry.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. The rate offered via Compare Holiday money is a promotional rate, to receive this rate you would have to go through the link on the website. Regarding being turned away for your ID, we accept the main government issued photographic ID’s such as a Full UK/EU driver’s license, National ID card and Passport. The level of service you described is not what we expect and we would love to have the opportunity to make things right, if we could please ask that you reach out to us by sending an email to [email protected] and we can begin looking further into your visit.

We look forward to speaking with you.

Kind Regards,

ordered first thing in the morning, you get a choice of dates for delivery or collection from a branch, I had them delivered for the following day by special delivery which was free for my 850 euros, got a good mix of 50s,20s,10s and 5 notes, they arrived on time at 930 am, they had the top rate on the day in question on the comparison website

Ordered a prepaid currency card

Wanted information and help with transferring money into an American bank and setting up a card. I went to the exchange in Bury, the staff there were terrific and went above and beyond to assure that I understood everything. Thank you so much Sarah xxxx

Bought £600 worth of Turkish lira

Ordered Turkish lira

Was worried about ordering online for such large amount but received special delivery at 10am

Very happy customer will use service again

7 August 2022

Bought £580 worth of Euros

Dreadful service. They messed up and sent Euros by post instead of to the shop in Kings Heath, Birmingham. This was an easy mistake to make...

I went in to pick them up, and even though I was travelling the next day and would have missed delivery of 600 Euros, they were unable to help. Escalated to regional manager....they said no. So I was left having to pay for another 600 Euros there and then (they did at least match online rate which saved me about .20p). Oh, and they offered me free parking, but I was on the bike. A truly laughable service.

5 June 2022

Ordered Euros online to click and collect from Sunderland Bridges store. Went to the shop when instructed by email, to find the place in darkness, although the shutter was up. Waited for a little while but no one came. Rang the number on the email several times but no response. Wandered around the shops for a while and returned to find still no one there. Checked the opening times, apparently Sunday hours are 11am until 5pm. I'd initially arrived around 12. I now need to come out of work early to dash back to town before closing time during the week. The worst of it was, I could have got the same rate over the counter at a shop a few doors up as the 'boosted' online rate I'd paid for with eurochange.... Never again.

Good Afternoon Nicky,

Please accept our apologies for the issues you faced getting your order collected and the branch being closed when you went to collect.

We would like to investigate this further so we can find a suitable resolution for yourself, can you email us some further details about your experience to [email protected] including your order number.

19 March 2022

Changed £2000 into dollars all done online for next day delivery. Varied in all notes $100 dollars and down. Was delivered next day by Royal mail although they did put it in my outside postbox and not handed to us. Report to Eurochange and apology given and vouchers for next use. Very impressed on how it was dealt with

28 February 2022

Have used Eurochange many times over the years usually without issue. However the last 3 times I have not been happy. The money wasn't delivered by the Royal Mail one time which meant I either had to travel 15 miles to another location or go on holiday without. In November 2020 I got a text saying my money was ready to collect followed by another text shortly after telling me the branch would be closed all over the weekend. I again could travel to my next nearest location (15 miles) or wait till Monday. I went Monday and the money wasn't there!! I finally got it on the Turesday. Then this Feb. I gave them 1 last chance. I ordered £1600 of Euros, got the text to say it was in store, went to collect only to find it was in 10 & 20 Euro notes (no 50s or 100s!!). Not a happy customer.

Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review.

I'm sorry to hear that you where dissatisfied with the notes provided in your recent order.

We offer a mix of denominations in our orders unless requested otherwise prior to delivery/collection.

We would like to discuss this further with you, please email [email protected] or call us on 0333 240 1687.

We hope you continue to use eurochange for your future currency needs.

Kind regards,

Automatic Refunds and No More Hidden Fees: D.O.T. Sets New Rules for Airlines

The Transportation Department issued new requirements on refunds when flights are canceled or delayed and on revealing “junk” fees before booking. Here’s what passengers can expect.

A blue airport screen showing extensive cancellations and delays is shown in close up with a man standing in front of it.

By Christine Chung

The Transportation Department on Wednesday announced new rules taking aim at two of the most difficult and annoying issues in air travel: obtaining refunds and encountering surprise fees late in the booking process.

“Passengers deserve to know upfront what costs they are facing and should get their money back when an airline owes them — without having to ask,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in a statement, adding that the changes would not only save passengers “time and money,” but also prevent headaches.

The department’s new rules, Mr. Buttigieg said, will hold airlines to clear and consistent standards when they cancel, delay or substantially change flights, and require automatic refunds to be issued within weeks. They will also require them to reveal all fees before a ticket is purchased.

Airlines for America , a trade group representing the country’s largest air carriers, said in a statement that its airlines “abide by and frequently exceed” D.O.T. consumer protection regulations.

Passenger advocates welcomed the new steps.

Tomasz Pawliszyn, the chief executive of AirHelp, a Berlin-based company that assists passengers with airline claims, called it a “massive step forward and huge improvement in consumer rights and protection” that brings the United States closer to global standards in passenger rights.

Here’s what we know about the D.O.T.’s new rules, which will begin to go into effect in October.

There’s now one definition for a “significant” delay.

Until now, airlines have been allowed to set their own definition for a “significant” delay and compensation has varied by carrier . Now, according to the D.O.T., there will be one standard: when departure or arrival is delayed by three hours for domestic flights and six hours for international flights.

Passengers will get prompt refunds for cancellations or significant changes for flights and delayed bags, for any reason.

When things go wrong, getting compensation from an airline has often required establishing a cumbersome paper trail or spending untold hours on the phone. Under the new rules, refunds will be automatic, without passengers having to request them. Refunds will be made in full, excepting the value of any transportation already used. Airlines and ticket agents must provide refunds in the original form of payment, whether by cash, credit card or airline miles. Refunds are due within seven days for credit card purchases and within 20 days for other payments.

Passengers with other flight disruptions, such as being downgraded to a lower service class, are also entitled to refunds.

The list of significant changes for which passengers can get their money back also includes: departure or arrival from an airport different from the one booked; connections at different airports or flights on planes that are less accessible to a person with a disability; an increase in the number of scheduled connections. Also, passengers who pay for services like Wi-Fi or seat selection that are then unavailable will be refunded any fees.

Airlines must give travel vouchers or credits to ticketed passengers unable to fly because of government restrictions or a doctor’s orders.

The vouchers or credits will be transferable and can be used for at least five years after the date they were issued.

Fees for checked baggage and modifying a reservation must be disclosed upfront.

Airlines and ticket agents are now required to display any extra fees for things like checking bags or seat selection clearly and individually before a ticket purchase. They will also need to outline the airline’s policies on baggage, cancellations and changing flights before a customer purchases a ticket.

The rules, which apply to all flights on domestic airlines and flights to and from the United States operated by foreign airlines, have varying start dates.

For example, automatic refunds must be instituted by the airlines within six months. But carriers have a year before they’re required to issue travel vouchers and credits for passengers advised by a medical professional not to fly.

Norwich Parking and Car Parks: Affordable & Convenient Options

When planning your visit to Norwich, understanding the Norwich parking landscape is key to a stress-free experience. This article provides information on individual car parks in Norwich, while considering affordability and convenience, including free parking in Norwich options. Whether you’re in the fine city for shopping, leisure, or business, knowing where to park in Norwich can significantly save you time and money.

Chantry Place

Chantry Place is a central hub for parking in Norwich centre, offering over 1,000 car park spaces. This multi-storey car park is ideal for those looking to shop at nearby stores or visit attractions like Norwich Cathedral. With live parking Norwich updates signposted on most illuminated signs as you enter the city, you can easily check space availability. The Chantry Place car park is also a great option for cheap parking in Norwich, with rates starting at £1.65 for up to an hour. It also has a flat £3 evening rate from 3pm onwards.

The Chantry Place parking systems were recently upgraded to ANPR technology meaning there’s no need to mess around with tickets, just visit the pay machines on your exit to pay with your car reg. Alternatively, we’ve noticed that when the machines are heavily queued up by people trying to remember their car registration numbers, you can still drive to the barriers without visiting the pay machines and simply use a contactless card to transact at the barrier.

Castle Quarter

The Castle Quarter car parks are a stone’s throw away from the city’s shopping district, providing parking in what used to be known as The Castle Mall . It’s a convenient choice for those seeking Norwich city centre parking and is literally underneath the historic Norwich Castle, making it one of the most strategic spots for parking spaces Norwich has to offer.

Open 7 am to midnight, evening visitors can benefit from the Castle Quarter evening rate of £2 after 6pm. There is, however, no overnight parking Norwich rate in this car park. It’s also important to note that Castle Quarter is split into two different car parks, and both entrances are within around 150m of each other. There’s exclusive 24 hours parking access for members of Pure Gym located in the facilities. For £15.99 per month, members get not only gym membership but also 2 hours free parking making this a potentially savvy investment if you’re in the city regularly.

St Andrew’s

As the evening rate from 6:30pm is just £3.20, this can be stacked with the max day rate of £10.80 to give 24 hour parking, in the city centre, at just £14.

While it is not a free parking facility, Riverside car park provides a cost-effective and convenient solution for those using the Riverside Entertainment Complex. This added perk makes it an even more appealing option for those planning to enjoy the entertainment offerings and restaurants located along the riverside and looking for cheap parking Norwich options.

Norwich Train Station

Q: Where can I find information for Norwich Parking that is live?

There are a number of websites that suggest they offer live parking updates such as Parking Canary, Scenic Norfolk and HowManySpaces.com – It’s important to realise that not all these websites reliably pass on accurate live parking data as they pull through public data that doesn’t always refresh correctly. Other places to travel solo we considered

We compiled our list of the best places to travel alone by evaluating global destinations based on safety, affordability, cultural and historical sites and convenience, among other factors.

Although the following destinations didn’t make it into our top list, they’re still worth considering as you plan your travels.

Reykjavik, Iceland

  • Close to beautiful natural landmarks
  • It's possible to see the Northern Lights when conditions allow
  • Home to many museums and several Michelin-starred restaurants
  • More expensive than other popular travel destinations
  • The region's weather can be bleak
  • Long periods of darkness and sunlight can interfere with your sleep schedule

Reykjavik is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, with stunning mountains and beaches everywhere you look. However, it’s an expensive destination and experiences prolonged periods of darkness and sunlight that may be difficult to adjust to.

  • Some of the best food in South America
  • Miles of beautiful coastline to explore
  • Friendly locals - many of whom speak at least some English
  • Travelers can suffer from altitude sickness in some popular attractions
  • The city is sprawling, which can increase travel times and make traffic worse

Lima is a beautiful South American destination with picturesque beaches and affordable accommodations. It’s also a foodie’s dream, with a wide variety of tasty local and international restaurants available at budget-friendly prices.

Just remember that traffic congestions are common and can make it hard to get around. Additionally, some travelers may experience altitude sickness in high-altitude locations like Cusco and Machu Picchu.

Knoxville, Tennessee

  • Has beautiful outdoor settings
  • Minimal traffic
  • Moderate prices for accommodations
  • There isn't as much to do in Knoxville as in other travel destinations
  • Public transportation options are limited

Knoxville is the third-largest city in Tennessee, but it maintains a small-town feel. It’s home to beautiful attractions, such as the Great Smoky Mountains and the World’s Fair Park, and has enough cultural exhibits and museums to keep you busy.

Nevertheless, there isn’t quite as much to do here as in other cities, and public transportation is comparatively limited.

Places to Travel Solo Guide

Traveling alone can be intimidating, but a little preparation can go a long way. This guide covers some of the best travel tips to help you plan your next solo trip.

Why travel solo?

As with everything, there are pros and cons to traveling alone.

Some of the benefits of solo travel include:

  • The ability to plan trips according to your schedule
  • Paying less for dining and experiences
  • Stepping out of your comfort zone and getting to know yourself better
  • Having more time to reflect and relax in peace

Of course, to enjoy your solo vacation to the fullest, practice general safety precautions. Be aware of your surroundings at all times, do some proper research before visiting new places and consider hiring a guide if you’re doing outdoor activities in remote locations.

How to travel alone

Traveling alone can be a wonderful experience. But it often requires more planning and initiative than group trips. The following tips for traveling alone should help you make the most of your next solo trip.

Research your travel destination extensively

The more research you do before visiting a destination, the more prepared you will be to enjoy it. Pay close attention to the following:

  • Climate : Be aware of the weather conditions at your destination to avoid potential hazards, pack the right gear and plan appropriate activities.
  • Top attractions : Plan your itinerary by mapping out the attractions you want to visit and checking their distance from your accommodations. This will help you create a realistic schedule and determine if you need to book transportation for any day trips.
  • Cost : Consider the average cost of accommodations, meals and attractions to create a realistic budget.
  • Public transportation : This is an important consideration, as visiting a destination with insufficient or unreliable public transportation translates into additional expenses.
  • Language barrier : Consider downloading translation apps or learning basic phrases in your destination’s native language if English isn’t widely spoken there.
  • Food : If you have any dietary restrictions, check the availability of suitable food options at your destination and plan your meals.

Stay connected with your friends and family

When traveling alone, keep your loved ones informed of where you’ll be and what you’ll be doing. That way, your family can call for help if they don’t hear back from you in a reasonable timeframe.

Depending on your destination, you may consider purchasing an international SIM card or an international phone plan with your existing carrier to text and call your people back home.

Finally, you can register your trip with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) through the U.S. State Department. STEP is a free service that allows you to receive automatic safety and travel updates from the U.S. embassy in the country you’re visiting. It also makes it easier for friends and family to reach you in an emergency.

Consider travel insurance

If you’ve spent quite a bit of money on non-refundable travel expenses and it hasn’t been that long since you made your initial trip deposit, consider travel insurance to safeguard your investment. A travel insurance policy can help you recoup a portion of pre-paid travel expenses if you cancel or interrupt your trip for a covered reason.

Travel medical insurance could also be worthwhile if you’re going on an extended trip, as it would cover some of your medical expenses in an emergency, including medical evacuation and repatriation. And some plans even include additional services like language support, which could be helpful if English isn’t widely spoken where you’re visiting.

If this sounds like something you’re interested in, check out our guide to the best travel insurance companies .

Try new things

Now that we’ve covered some of the most important things to do before leaving for a solo trip, let’s explore how to get as much enjoyment out of your travels as possible while you’re there. The best advice we can give you is to get out of your comfort zone and try new things.

If you genuinely want to experience everything other cultures have to offer, you can’t spend your days doing the same things you do at home. So take a chance and live as the locals do. You’ll be happy you did.

Interact with the locals

The best way to forget you’re traveling alone is to befriend the locals. Your new friends can keep you company, guide you to the best places in town (the ones that aren’t in any tourist guides) and help to make your trip more enjoyable overall.

Meeting locals is much easier to do now than before the Internet. A wide variety of online resources can connect you to local events and groups where you can meet people. Some of the best options for this include:

  • Facebook expat groups for the destination you’re visiting
  • The subreddit for your destination (such as r/Paris and r/Chicago)

Some professional and religious groups may have international meetups as well. This can be a fantastic way to meet locals with whom you already have something in common.

Take plenty of pictures (with you in them)

Last but not least, make sure you take plenty of pictures to share with your people back home. Landmarks can be great, but you should also be in some of the photos. Most people will happily snap pictures of you if you ask nicely.

What to do when traveling alone

Traveling alone can be one of the best experiences of your life or a challenge that quickly loses its appeal. To give yourself the best chance of having an ideal trip, remember the following strategies during your travels:

  • Be flexible : Flexibility is a must for solo travelers. You’ll have more fun if you take advantage of chance encounters and throw away your schedule when necessary.
  • Take group tours and classes : Just because you arrive at your destination alone doesn’t mean you must spend every minute there alone. Group tours and classes will help you meet people and give you a chance to socialize when you’re feeling lonely.
  • Stay in places that encourage talking : If you’re concerned about feeling lonely, consider staying at a hostel or bed and breakfast. Shared accommodations like these are more affordable than the best hotels and can be a great way to meet people.
  • Gather first-hand advice : You can use Reddit and other resources to read about the experiences other solo travelers have had at your destination. These firsthand accounts can alert you to problems you may not have considered otherwise and new opportunities for fun.
  • Sign up for free rewards programs : Airlines , hotel chains and third-party booking sites often have reward programs that help you save money if you’re a frequent traveler. You may also want to look into the best airline credit cards and best travel credit cards if you plan on traveling alone regularly.
  • Prioritize your safety : Traveling alone can make you a target, so prioritizing safety is important. Be proactive about telling others where you’ll be and take yourself out of situations you feel unsure about to enjoy your trip without incident.

Staying safe is a critical consideration for solo travelers. One way to do that is by avoiding reckless behavior, such as drinking excessively and venturing alone into places locals deem unsafe.

Take the time to thoroughly research your destination, share your travel plans with friends and family and prepare an emergency plan.

Finally, consider travel insurance. If something does happen while you’re traveling alone, it will provide financial support so you can go to the hospital without worrying about breaking your budget.

You could save up enough money to make the cost of travel insurance negligible by signing up for one of the best airline rewards programs .

A History of Moscow in 13 Dishes

Featured city guides.

Introduction

As a first step, we want to tell you one Russian joke.

In Moscow, one man takes his smartphone and says, “Ok Google, I need to go to the toilet. Where I can find it?”. A voice of the smartphone answers, “Hey man, you are in trouble.”

The toilet problem is very strong in Moscow, and foreign tourists suffer more than Russians. You have almost no chances to find public WC, and no matter are you ready to pay or not. We will give you a few advices on this page. As locals, we know everything about this problem.

Many tourists try to find WC in subway stations. If you follow this idea, you will fail and will lose your time. There are toilets in the Moscow subway, but they are available only for personnel. We do not know any precedent when they let somebody in.

Every year we have a same comedy. The Moscow government declares their new plan of creation public WCs at every station. Every year nothing change. We the Russians usually say in such situation, “a cart is still standing on its place.”

Maps of Moscow WCs

The Google Maps knows a few of WCs, but it is not a decision of the problem.

WCs in trading centres

It is also a good idea. You should remember a few features.

Not every trading centre has own WC. The Sanitary Rules of Russia demand it from every trading centre larger than 10700 square feet (1000 square meters). We also do not know how some trading centres drive a coach and four through. No comments.

The Rules say every trading centre must have a WC, but the Rules do not say how many. So, you will probably get into a situation when there is only one toilet in a large trading centre. In this case, you will need to search for it.

We made a few photos of public WC in one of trading centres in Moscow. See our small gallery below.

WCs in restaurants

There is no any law in Russia that force a restaurant to let everybody using the WC. So, if you enter a restaurant and want to use a toilet, you will need to ask for a permission. Fortunately, Russia is a civilized country, and we never saw a precedent when somebody rejected.

Even if your request is rejected, you will order a cup of coffee, became a client and use the WC. We ask our readers to respect the law and act according to the law.

How to ask about WC in Russian

It is easy. The English word “toilet” sounds very close to the Russian word “tualet”. Even if you say in English, everybody will understand you. Do not hesitate to ask; Russians are usually ready to help.

We have only one advice for this situation. You should show that you a foreigner. If you will not do this, then people will be thinking you a local and will be explaining you something in Russian. Just say something in English to show you are a foreigner, and say the word “toilet”. You will receive an answer by a finger same as it shows the photo on the left.

Of course, it was a joke above. By the way, nowadays, you can find a few monuments to Vladimir Lenin in Moscow, but we do not recommend to follow in the direction he is showing. We the Russians walked in this direction for 74 years, and we still do not understand, where we were going and why.

You can think Russia is a wild country because of this toilet problem. This opinion is wrong. If you visit any private business centre, you will see a fine WC. If you visit a flat of ordinary Russian citizen, you will also find it is clean and in order.

But, if the government is in charge of something, then you will see a long list of problems that are not resolved from year to year. This is Russia.

We write this website to make your voyage to Russia perfect. Read other articles ( look for the list of links below and on the left from the text of every article )

Izmailovsky Flea Market: The Best Souvenir Shopping Place in Moscow

By Claudia Looi Leave a Comment

Matryoshkas

For discerning travelers who want the best souvenirs at rock bottom prices, Izmailovsky flea market is a must-visit place in Moscow. It is located in the outskirts of Moscow, a 15-minute train ride from Kremlin and three minutes walk from the Izmailovo Hotel Complex. A far cry from the upscale stores of GUM in Red Square and Petrovka Boulevard, Izmailovsky is a down-to-earth shopper’s paradise.

Our travel leader Erik from Tucan Travel bought an ushanka for his brother in his last trip. He suggested my son should save his money and get the ushanka from the same vendor at Izmailovsky too on the Saturday before we left Moscow to take the Trans Mongolian train to Irkutsk.

Izmailovsky is open every day but the best shopping days are during the weekends. That’s when you’ll find hundreds of vendors selling almost the same things like the lacquer boxes, matryoshkas (nesting dolls), mink hats (some of them are fakes), T-shirts, magnets, unique artifacts and cheap coffee in a shopping cart.

More choices but we bought from the man recommended by Erik.

The art of haggling is necessary at the Izamilovsky and better yet if you go with someone who speaks Russian you can put your haggling techniques to the next level. For me it was the best place to mingle with the locals and migrants from the Central Asia, formerly a part of the Soviet Union.

There is a food section in the market where all the vendors sell the same lamb kebabs and grilled lamb with flat bread. Seating is limited and you’ll need to share with strangers.

Izmailovsky flea market is located next to the Kremlin Izmailovo, a colorful complex for events and wedding ceremonies and receptions. The Izmailovo area was the Romanov family’s estate in the 1600s. The Museum of History of Vodka, The Bread Museum and The Museum of Russian Folk Toys are located in the Kremlin Izmailovo complex.

We walked through the complex to get to the Izmailovsky flea market. There was no charge to walk through the complex. You may have to pay entrance fee to the flea market if you enter the through the black iron gate in front of a parking lot.

If you are going without a guide from the city, use the metro line 3 that takes you to Partizanskaya metro stop.

View when driving from Yelisovo airport to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky

The first myth I want to disprove is that getting to Kamchatka is extremely costly. It’s not. Going between February and April, a return flight from Moscow can be had for 11,000 roubles (US$380 / £220). Not bad for 18 hours total flying time. In summer the flights are more expensive but still, if you book them a few months in advance, can be got for 16,000 roubles return.

It’s true, many people will tell you that March and April are the worst months to visit because the snow is starting to melt and everything’s a bit sloshy and dirty in settlements. On the other hand, these are great months for the independent traveller! During winter zimniki (temporary winter roads made of compacted snow or simply frozen river surfaces) open up all over Kamchatka, granting access to communities that in summer are totally isolated. Hitch hiking is possible right from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky to the very north of the peninsula. Alternatively, vehicles can be hired in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky from tour firms. Also in the winter or early spring months places can be reached that are away even from the zimniki, either by snowmobile or by the use of cross country skis. For example, Klyuchevskaya Sopka, Eurasia’s largest active volcano, can be accessed from the village of Klyuchi without the need even for a guide by a traveller with a pair of cross country skis. Bears do not wake up until mid-April so this is not a danger, but bears almost never attack anyone anyway.

The main disadvantages of winter travel in Kamchatka are that it is cold, there is no greenery and there are no bears, which some people come here especially to see.

The second myth I’d like to dispel is that travel around the peninsula requires hiring a helicopter. As mentioned above, in winter you can get almost anywhere by hitch hiking. I even hitched a lift with bear hunters on snowmobiles from their village to a reindeer herder encampment 100km away. In summer snowmobiles are replaced by horses, and transport is reduced from long distance ice-road journeys to irregular inter-settlement all-terrain vehicle trips. Hitch hiking is possible on these all-terrain vehicles though.

Throughout the year there are fairly expensive public helicopter flights to all settlements which are nevertheless much cheaper than hiring your own helicopter. There is also one permanent, year-round dirt road leading halfway up the peninsula. Some distance after the town of Milkovo, about 350km north of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky , it forks. The right fork leads to Klyuchi , site of Eurasia’s largest active volcano, and further to the port town of Ust-Kamchatsk. The left fork leads to the indigenous Even villages of Anavgay and Esso. Daily buses go from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky to Klyuchi , Anavgay and Esso, costing about 1000 roubles each way. In winter a zimnik passable by lorries heads north from Anavgay 36 hours to the otherwise isolated town of Palana. From Palana more zimniki head further north to yet more isolated settlements. From the peninsula’s very northernmost settlements there are even EXTREMELY irregular snowmobile and all-terrain vehicle connections with Magadan Oblast and Chukotka. Another zimnik, only passable by all-terrain vehicle, heads from Anavgay to the village of Ust-Khayryuzovo on Kamchatka’s west coast.
