OVER 850 FIVE-STAR REVIEWS!

We took our two grandsons out on the 2 hour whale watching excursion - perfect amount of time for the kids. Boat was super nice, and captain shared really good information about whales, dolphins, sea lions and more. Their use of a drone was also really cool! Saw at least 4 grey whales, and 2 different species of dolphins who raced under the boat with us! Great day on the water!

Amazing! Saw a bunch of dolphins and sea lions. It was such an easy process to board. Fun and super special. If you're looking for a great adventure, definitely take this tour!

Always enjoy the afternoon trips! We use to go from Dana Point but discovered Oceanside and now only go out with Oceanside Adventures! Today we saw a pod of dolphins playing all around the boat and also saw a gray whale. I got a shot of the fluke!

Best whale watching tour I’ve every been on. The crew was great and we saw all kinds of animals from a grey whale to different types of dolphins. We even saw a sea lion eat a small shark! Great experience overall!

I've gone out with Oceanside Adventures several times over the last two years, and every single trip has been a new experience... Shane the captain is incredibly friendly and informative and his crew is amazing. It's an experience I would recommend for anyone. Bring the whole family!

My wife and I loved our trip. Good, stable, safe, clean boat. Knowledgeable captain and mates. Leaving from Oceanside harbor makes for shorter trips - closer to the whales. We followed two whales and encountered multiple pods of dolphins. We plan to return next year.

The decision to pick this tour out of Oceanside turned out to be the best ever! The price was affordable, and one of the reasons I initially chose them, but the trip turned out to be far better than I ever expected. We saw what must have been hundreds of dolphins in 3 different species and 2 grey whales! We hung out with the whales for a long time and on the way back we took a detour and spotted sea lions hanging out on a buoy! The trip went quite a bit over the 2 hours we paid for and the crew went above and beyond to give us a memorable excursion! Well worth it! You won’t be sorry.

This is the second time we took the trip and we loved it each time. The crew is fantastic and kept us informed of events and sightings and they are super knowledgeable. The boat is very well maintained and the area is beautiful. We'll be back again and will be bringing our grandson and other family members next time.

Second trip with Oceanside Adventures and loved it. Friendly staff, knowledgeable. Captain extended out trip to catch a glimpse of a passing grey whale. Fantastic! Looking forward to our next trip.

My sister and I booked the whale watching tour while vacationing near Oceanside and we really enjoyed the experience. We saw thousands of dolphins, 2 whales, and a variety of other marine animals. We had a lovely day in terms of weather, so all around it was a wonderful, relaxing and fun way to spend a couple of hours on the water.

Whales and Dolphins of the California Coast

Gray Whales: Up Close

Gray whales are one of the most commonly-seen whales along the California coast. Their name is taken from the gray patches and white mottling on their dark skin. An adult Pacific Gray Whale can be 45 feet long and weigh up to 33 tons. To help you visualize, that's a little longer than an average school bus and as heavy as a half dozen fully-grown African elephants.

Gray whales migrate 10,000 miles round trip every year, traveling between their winter calving lagoons in Mexico and summer feeding grounds in the Arctic. It's the longest migration of any animal on earth. The 2011 population of California gray whales was thought to number around 28,000, and they all pass the coast as they migrate.

When seen off the California coast, they aren't stopping to eat or socialize, they're on their equivalent of a road trip, not even stopping to sleep.

When to See Gray Whales in California

Gray whales start swimming south from Alaska in October, generally passing the coast off San Diego from December through January and again in February and March when they return to their feeding grounds. They're closest to the shore when traveling south, in particular between Monterey and San Diego.

Where to See Gray Whales in California

You can see the gray whales anywhere along the California coast. Whale watching cruises operate from San Diego , Dana Point , Long Beach , Ventura, Santa Barbara, Monterey , Half Moon Bay and San Francisco .

You can also see them from land, especially from any part of the coastline that juts into the sea, where they typically come closest to land. Some good spots include Point Reyes, the Monterey Peninsula and Point Dume north of Los Angeles.

Use the California whale watching guide to get more information about how to pick the best whale watching cruises and how to enjoy them to the fullest.

Gray Whales: What You'll See

Because the gray whales are migrating and don't stop to eat on the way, you'll most often see them as they break the surface to grab a breath of air - or their flukes above the surface when they begin a deep dive.

Grey whales typically swim in a cycle. They take 3 to 5 breaths (which you will see as "blows" or sprays of water), 30 seconds apart, followed by a 3- to 6-minute dive, and they often show their tail flukes just before they dive. If they're swimming just below the surface and you're high enough to see the water's surface, they may leave a "trail" of circular calm spots on the surface as they pass, making them easier to track.

Your best bet for seeing a gray whale is to scan the ocean's surface, looking for a vertical spray of water. If you know which direction the whales are migrating (which you can find on the gray whales close up page) you'll have an advantage in predicting its next location. Expect it to spout again further along the direction it's moving. They swim about 5 miles per hour or the speed of a child on a bicycle. Keep binoculars handy, and once you get good at figuring out where they will be, you may be able to get a closer look.

Blue Whales: Up Close

Blue whales are possibly the largest animal that ever lived on the earth. Blue-gray in color, long and slender, they can grow up to 100 feet long and weigh more than 300,000 pounds.

These ocean giants feed almost exclusively on small, shrimp-like creatures called krill.

When to See Blue Whales in California

Blue whales swim and feed off the California coast from mid-June through October when krill is abundant. At that time, thousands of them can be found off the California coast.

Where to See Blue Whales in California

Blue whales feed off the California coast between Bodega Bay and San Diego. Whale-watching cruises are available from most of the larger coastal towns including Monterey.

Because they feed away from the shore, they're not easy to spot from land.

Find out more about blue whales  online.

Blue Whales: What You'll See

Blue whales feed on small, shrimp-like creatures called krill and you may see them near the surface, slurping them up - or you might see just a spout like this one. You can see about three-quarters of the length of their back when they surface. They're not diving deeply, and you can sometimes see about three-quarters of the length of their back when they surface - and their beautiful tail flukes at the end.

Fin Whales: Up Close

Fin whales are second only to the blue whale in size and weight, growing up to 70 feet long and weighing 70 tons. They're long and sleek, with a V-shaped head which is flat on top. A few thousand of them can be found along the California coast.

If stood on end, an adult fin whale would be as tall as a seven-story building, weighing as much as a fully loaded military tank. They can swim up to 14 miles per hour and can hold their breath up to 45 minutes between breaches, making them a very rare whale-watching sight.

Fin whales eat mostly small shrimp-like creatures called krill and schooling fish, and they travel in groups (called pods) of 2 to 10 individuals.

When to See Fin Whales in California

Fin whales are usually sighted in the winter.

Where to See Fin Whales in California

You can see fin whales on whale-watching trips from Orange County , San Diego, Long Beach, the Channel Islands near Ventura and Santa Barbara, Morro Bay, Monterey Bay and occasionally as far north as San Francisco .

Find out more about fin whales  online.

Fin Whales: What You'll See

Fin whales are big, they move fast, and they can stay submerged for a long time. If you're lucky, you'll get close enough to see their distinctive back fin as they swim. However, they seldom show their tail flukes when they dive.

Risso's Dolphin

Risso's dolphins are snub-nosed, gray animals with white scars. Their population off the California coast is estimated to be between 13,000 and 30,000.

Risso's Dolphins in California

They are most often found offshore but are also seen with some regularity in Monterey Bay. However, their range extends along the entire California coast.

Find out more about Risso's Dolphins  online.

Pacific White Sided Dolphin

These dolphins with a short, rounded, thick beak, black backs, and white bellies are playful, love to ride the bow waves of boats, and they're acrobatic jumpers. They eat squid and small schooling fish and live in groups (pods) that may include thousands of individuals.

Pacific White Sided Dolphins in California

You'll find these dolphins along the entire California coast, a small part of their range from the Gulf of Alaska to the Gulf of California. In winter, they're more commonly found toward the southern end of their range.

Find out more about Pacific white-sided dolphins  online.

Bottlenose Dolphin

Bottlenose dolphins are charming performers, often seen in films and television shows, including the 1964 television show "Flipper." They have short, stubby beaks and range in color from light to dark gray. They eat a wide variety of food. About 3,000 of them live off the California coast.

Bottlenose Dolphins in California

Bottlenose dolphins are most commonly seen along the California coast between San Francisco and San Diego. You can also see them in captivity at Sea World in San Diego.

Find out more about bottlenose dolphins  online.

Common Dolphin

The distinctively-marked common dolphin has a dark gray-to-black back with white hourglass markings on their sides. They feed at night on squid and small schooling fish.

Common Dolphins in California

You'll see common dolphins along the entire California coast, year-round, most often where surface water temperature is 50 to 70°C (10 to 20°C), offshore but in water shallower than 600 feet (180 meters).

Find out more about common dolphins  online.

When to Whale Watch in California: Whale Watching Calendar

Betsy Malloy Photography.

You go whale watching almost anywhere along the California coast. Use an online guide to find out about tour companies, seasons, and where to watch from land in the most-visited locations.

The graphic above shows the times of year that whales are usually seen along the California coast. However, they may not be found everywhere along the coast at those times.

Even more important is that the whales are free to go wherever they like, paying no attention to the calendars we humans create. Varying ocean currents, an "El Nino" or "La Nina" year with atypical water temperatures and location and availability of food can bring them into areas at times other than the typical ones shown above.

October through February: Grey whales southbound from Alaska to Mexico and can be seen along the entire coast, swimming offshore.

February through April: Grey whales are northbound from Mexico to Alaska. Mothers with calves travel last, staying closer to the shore and moving slowly, making this one of the best times to see them.

June through October: Blue whales and humpback whales can be seen along the Big Sur coast, and around the Channel Islands.

April to early November: Humpback whales along the central California coast.

July through October: Minke whales, mostly in southern California

April through June: Orcas from Southern California to Santa Cruz

Everyone is very friendly and helpful. Right after I purchased our tickets online, I received an email with detailed information on directions, parking, when to arrive, what to bring, etc. Our whale watching cruise lasted for 2 1/2 hours and we saw several groups of humpback whales. From the time we arrived to when we left, every employee was friendly, courteous, informative, and very helpful. We couldn't have asked for a better whale watching company.

An AMAZING experience. I've gone whale watching with Princess Monterey 5 times now and never disappointed. Staff is kind and great! We went on Wednesday Sept1st and Thursday the 2nd and both days we saw some spectacular scenes. Loads of lunge feeding and breaching!!!!

We had an amazing tour, about 3 hours, and we travel about 30 minutes into sea and we found a spot with lots of whales and sea lions feasting on anchovies! Our tour guides said our tour was one of the most sightings they have experienced in a while! This tour was really worth it! The boat is comfortable, with clean toilets and option for inside or outside seating. They also sell some snacks and drinks in the boat. I will highly recommend this tour!

This is my third trip with Princess Whale Watching. I highly enjoyed each trip. No two the same. I especially like the educational aspect and the biologist giving interesting information about the species of wildlife being viewed. All crew members were friendly and helpful. The boats are clean and well maintained. They know exactly where to take the boat to put you right in the middle of whale action. No complaints here!

Start off your day with a good breakfast to fill up your belly. Don’t bring binoculars because the boat brings you close. But do bring a nice camera with a nice lens to be sure you can get a nice shot of the whales. We saw a big feeding group of about 100 sea lions, 200 seagulls and about 6-10 whales. It was really awesome and something I’ll never forget. None of this would be possible without the great crew aboard the Princess Monterey! You won’t regret it!

We were 8 miles out, with fantastic views of humpback whales, Rizzo's dolphins, pelicans, and of course seals/sea lions. The commentator was clear and informative. I felt completely safe, and the crew clearly knew what they were doing. I would definitely do this again!

We had a great trip with Princess Monterey. We saw a great show and the naturalist on board did a great job of explaining the details of the whale and wildlife behavior. The captain also was very adept at positioning the boat for viewing multiple surfacing of the whales and their activity. We also followed the advice of others about layering for weather and were glad we had warm clothing!

The crew and the marine specialist were SO nice and knowledgeable. They made every effort to make sure we were enjoying ourselves and we learned a lot. AND we saw SOOO many whales, one of which went under our boat and came up right next to us! They were breaching left and right. We didn't know where to look and we didn't want to go back to shore! Thank you to everyone for making it such a special afternoon for my family!

That was an experience of a lifetime. We had water-spouts all around us. We had whales swimming in tandem and single animals seemed curious about us on the surface and came up right next to the boat. Great crew and boat, perfect for the family. We went out on the Sea Goddess and the crew was really great. The onboard naturalist gave us a lot of interesting facts and information about the bay and the whales. We saw several whales and one whale followed along near the boat breeching over 100 times! It was amazing to see. I have been on other whale watching trips and these guys are the best! Thanks for a fun time!

Definitely recommend The Sea Goddess Whale watching tour. The crew was very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. The boat was very clean. We saw quite a few whales, sea lions, sun fish and jellyfish. Thanks for an awesome trip!

What an amazing trip we had! 4 beautiful whale spots, with three of them cresting out from the waves at the same time! The staff was so friendly, great with the kids and their questions and full of awesome knowledge. I would highly recommend this tour!

"I had an absolutely incredible time during my first whale watching tour. It was very memorable. Within the first 15 minute of the tour, we spotted a couple of humpback whales. The crew was very knowledgeable and worked incredibly well as a team! Thank you all for making my first whale watching tour not my last and looking forward to coming back to SF again in the future!"

"My friends and I went on an afternoon trip with SFWT and it was amazing! The staff were extremely friendly and knowledgeable, and we had such a fun time. The boat isn't massive and they don't over pack it with people, so everyone has the ability to see all the whales! We saw 4 different humpbacks, porpoises, seals and sea lions - very successful. Would definitely recommend this company to others visiting SF!!!"

"Despite being a misty day on the day our trip, everything went without a glitch. The tour departed and arrived punctually. Managed to see a number of whales from a distance. Onboard naturalist was knowledgeable and articulate. Kitty Kat ship crew were friendly and helpful. All staff were mindful of the guests safety and respectful of the whales. As an added bonus, photos taken by the naturalist were available online on her website."

"My family and I took out of town guests on an adventure to watch whales and see the wildness that surrounds San Francisco on 3 sides. SF Whale Tours did a great job of helping all of us on board find whales, see them and identify them and learn about the local underwater geography and sea life. Kudos to Michael and the entire crew for an enjoyable excursion!"

Discovery Whale Watch

Current Season and Sightings

Summer / Fall Season (Mid-March through early December)

During the summer/fall season we are focusing on feeding whales that come to the bay to feast on small fish and krill. We expect to see humpback whales daily but we can also view blue whales, fin whales, gray whales (finishing migration), killer whales and a variety of other dolphin species. The summer / fall season can be very windy in the afternoon! The wind pattern we get from spring to mid-summer is great for the ocean, but can make it difficult for a boat ride. Please consider this when you choosing between your options.

We offer a morning tour (recommended) at 9am which is 3.5-4 hours in duration. We also offer an afternoon tour at 1:30pm which is 2.5-3 hours in duration. Whale sightings are consistent all day, but the morning sea conditions are usually more favorable. We like to take extra time searching a variety of areas around Monterey Bay in the morning, while the seas are calmer so that we can make our best route plan for the afternoon when the seas can be more choppy.

We typically run a 5pm Sunset whale watch tour in the summer months as well. For the 2021 season, we have also been running these for spring break. Enjoy the wildlife and then relax as you take in the beautiful sunset over the Monterey Bay!

The bay is always teeming with life! There are still opportunities to see several different species of dolphin, Humpback whales, Blue whales, and even Killer Whales on occasion!

Join us on a Monterey Bay whale watching trip and  Learn more about seasons in Monterey Bay.

Winter Season (December-Mid March)

During the winter season we are focusing on migrating whales. The one of largest movement of mammals on earth happens just off the coast of Pacific Grove, CA – the south end of Monterey Bay. Gray whales pass by the coast, about a 30 min ride from Monterey Harbor. Due to the short distance from the “gray whale super highway” our trips can be shorter in duration for the winter time. We depart at 10am and 1:30pm daily during this time of year.

Check out personal accounts of our trips on our review pages. We have reviews on Facebook , Yelp , and  Trip Advisor . Or read two of our recent reviews below the photos. Can’t get enough of Discovery Whale Watch? Check out the options for gift cards!

Why Choose Discovery Whale Watch?

Join some of the best in the business! Our crew is passionate about marine life and has been working in the whale watch industry for years. Our trips depart from Monterey Harbor, which is an ideal place for local activities before or after your trip such as Monterey Fisherman’s Wharf , Monterey Bay Aquarium , Cannery Row and the scenic coast line of Pacific Grove.  In addition, it is the most convenient area to see the whales. We can easily view whales in any part of the Monterey submarine canyon system from our location. All of our whale watch and nature tours include narration and personal time with a naturalist who is well versed in local wildlife. Our naturalist team also participates in opportunistic whale research and helps our whale watch passengers become citizen scientists in cooperation with Happywhale !   Learn more about our crew here.

You’re welcome to ask the Captain questions, too!

  • Chevron down ⚠️ IMPORTANT SAFETY & COMFORT INFORMATION

Minimum Age

The minimum age on public trips is 6 years old.

Health Conditions

Because of the high-speed and fun but bumpy ride, passengers must be in good overall health. Guests may not have head, neck, or back injuries. Guests who are pregnant are not allowed. If any of these conditions impact your ability to enjoy our Zodiac Safari, please consider our 2.5-hour Dolphin and Whale Watching Signature Safari instead.

Ocean Spray

The zodiac-style boats are very low to the water, and as a result, you may encounter ocean spray during our Southern California whale watching tours. Please keep electronics, camera equipment, and any other items you don’t want wet secure while the boat is underway. You’re welcome to bring a GoPro. To prevent loss or damage, please do not attempt underwater filming until after the boat has slowed down and your Captain gives the OK.

Personal Items

The boats have ample cushioned seating for all passengers. However, space for storing belongings is not available. Please do not bring oversized bags or coolers; limit what you bring to what you can fit on your lap. Waist-packs, mini backpacks, and small camera sling bags are good examples of what to carry your belongings in.

Food & Beverages

Because these vessels offer a fast and bouncy ride, we highly recommend beverages in reusable containers that can be closed and easy-to-eat dry snacks that won’t be swept away by the wind such as granola bars. To prevent spills please do not bring open cans of drinks on our Southern California whale watching tours aboard the Zodiacs.

Seasickness

The Zodiac Dolphin & Whale Watching Safari boats offers a very low center of gravity. For guests concerned about seasickness, this means the experience might feel more comfortable.

Bring Out Your Inner Jacques Cousteau

Have a GoPro? Bring it! The Zodiac Safari is extremely close to the water’s surface and perfect for capturing underwater shots during your Southern California whale watching tour.

Regular cameras are welcome too on your Southern California whale watching adventure. Just be sure to take precautions to keep expensive electronics safe from possible ocean spray.

Need for Speed

Reaching speeds of 30 knots or faster, our zodiac-style boats are the fastest in Dana Point for whale watching.

Book your tickets today and spend less time looking for animals and more time enjoying them!

Comfortable, Safe, and Stable

When it comes to Southern California whale watching tours, our Zodiac-style (rigid hull inflatable) boats feature heavily padded seats and seat backs as well as a large custom sunshade that provides protection from the sunny SoCal skies.

The vessels are also U.S. Coast Guard inspected and certified for safety.

The boat’s very low center of gravity offers passengers a higher level of stability. For anyone concerned about seasickness, this means the boat will feel more comfortable.

Cetacean Declaration – Our Sightings Guarantee

Sightings Guarantee Capt Dave's

You might be wondering, “What if I don’t see any animals?” Although we locate whales or dolphins on over 95% of our Southern California whale watching tours, there are rare occasions when we don’t see any marine mammals. So in the unlikely event of zero whales or dolphins, regular fare guests can return for FREE on a regular 2-hour safari within one year from the date of your trip. Dive deeper into what we see and when .

What do guests say about our zodiac whale watching cruises?

TripAdvisor logo

My two kids (11 and 13) and I had an incredible experience on the 12-seater FAST CAT boat. Wow. I wasn’t expecting much because I’ve whale-watched before with little success, and I even commented that even without seeing anything, it was fun just to be on a zippy boat. Moments later, we encountered a huge pod of dolphins that hung out with us, and we could take turns to lay on our bellies and put our hands in the water. It was a great perspective and fun experience! Our skipper seemed quite intent on finding the whales though…and we did: 2 humpbacks and 1 blue whale. It was an AMAZING experience, and I’d highly recommend it to anyone. Very cool. Another reviewer said it felt like the skipper went the extra mile… It felt that way to me, too. I hope to be back next time I visit Los Angeles.

Google review logo

From the moment our tour was booked until we were driving away from the Harbor, every moment was magical! Excellent customer service, superior communication and the best tour ever! We had Captain Gary driving Fast Cat for our tour and he was phenomenal! Excellent energy, knowledgeable and patient just to name a few of his qualities! While my husband and I have done many tours with Captain Dave’s, this was a first for our daughter and our first on one of the zodiak boats! Super close to the water and in the middle of all the action! We all had the best day ever! Great way to start off the new year!

Being on such a small, fast vessel, there isn’t a bad seat on the boat. We were able to cover so much ground and see so much more. We saw our first whale within minutes of leaving the harbor. We followed him for quite a while until we saw another one. So beautiful. I didn’t even take photos because I just wanted to be present in the moment. Then we went super fast. The ocean was blue and beautiful. We ended up in a pod of about 100 common dolphins. They were everywhere. We saw another breed of dolphins and more sea lions on our way back in. Steve and Daniel were excellent. They definitely deserve more triple chocolate brownies…. which were super killer, btw.

Yelp Logo

Captain Marie and Steve were AMAZING! I highly recommend the fast cat/zodiac. You are able to see everything up close and they do a great job of educating on the way! They are both so passionate about what they do!!! We saw whales, dolphins, sea lions! We saw it ALL! They communicate and work together !!!!! Highly RECOMMEND!!! We will be back in the summer!

I'd heard about the Fast Cat adventure last year, and wanted to try it ever since. The cost was certainly higher than your average whale watching tour, but this trip was worth every penny. I think this is going to be an annual thing for my husband and I. We had so much fun. The Fast Cat is the Zodiac adventure where you're right on the water. With such a small boat and group size, you're not limited to seeing off one side of the boat. You can see all around. Our captain, Marie, got us right to a huge pod of dolphins. Once surrounded, she slowed, allowing everyone to take turns looking over the bow of the boat. Here you can see the Dolphins so close that you can practically touch them. I wouldn't be surprised if some people actually did. You are that close. Captain Marie then located two greys, a mom and calf. We spent a good twenty minutes watching them. The boat ride itself is exciting. Lots of speeding and bumps. We were prepared to get wet, but we didn't. If you only make one whale watching trip, it should be with Captain Dave's. The other ships they have look awesome too. I'm happy we did the fast cat though.

Great tour, definitely recommend going on the zodiac boat. Staff and captain are very friendly and great.

This is our 3rd time going out. 1st time on the Fast Cat! Capt Steve and 1st mate Cheryl were outstanding. We saw dolphins, humpback and gray whale. Definitely recommend taking any one of their tours. Great!!

We went out on 2/20 2020, on the Zodiac. It was a fantastic whale watching experience. Our captain was Daniel; who took us immediately out about 5 miles from Dana point. We saw two large humpback whales who breached, gave us at least 20 instances of tail. These wheels were feeding, and very active above water. It was the best well watching experience I've ever had in my whole life! Very comfortable and safe. I highly recommend this whale watching service !

Captain Marie and her 1st mate Steve were awesome! Being on the Zodiac was a great choice because it was a great ride and got us super close to the water. The Captain worked with the other boats on the water to find a whale and several hundred dolphins. Captain Marie was also super knowledgeable about the sea life so I learned some new facts today. I also love that they took the time to grab some floating balloons, so they didn’t endanger wildlife later. Will definitely be back!

Hubby and I took the Fast Cat...the Zodiac boat...to see the whales. Even if we hadn't seen a whale, it was exciting to fly across the water. Captain Marie and her 1st mate were wonderful. The boat holds 12 but there were only 8 of us on the early morning ride. Space for moving around and meeting each other before we saw the whales. We found a great gray whale that became curious of our "little" boat and swam as close as 40 feet from us. Plenty of dolphins and seal lions, too. A GREAT 90 minutes of watertime.

Thanks to Captain Dave's whale watching tour, our trip to the OC started off spectacular. We went on the Zodiac Dolphin & Whale Watching Safari today with the amazing Captain Neal. We saw over 2,000 common dolphins, a humpback whale, and a fin whale. It was the most surreal experience! We would highly recommend taking a tour with Captain Neal, as his knowledge and expertise on marine life really made the trip worthwhile.

We took the zodiac tour 2 days ago and what a riot. Capt Steve was excellent and did his best to get us to see some whales, which we did get to see. But even if we hadn't seen any sea life, the ride in the zodiac was just plain fun. They went way out of their way to accommodate us and I would highly recommend this company for their class and fun.

Where do I start? My fiance and myself, Tom Ginn & Jennifer Gilbert were on a 7 day So California vacation with my daughter. Of course my daughter visited all the fun parks and we found an absolute gem in Captain Dave's. We were expecting to see any wildlife and we got more then we bargained for. I sure wish i could remember one of our captain's name. I believe it was Tim or Ken(Argggg). I do remember Captain Marie. These two were the most impressive captain's. We were hoping to see a dolphin or two but would have been satisfied with seeing any wildlife. We still are in AMAZED at what we encountered. A Minke whale, a Humpback whale, 1000's of Dolphin(Common) and a family of Sea Lion, we are still in AWE!!!!!!! Why they call these dolphins Common, is beyond me. They are everything but common. We have decided to make this an annual trip just for the fun. If we see wildlife then that is just an added bonus. This was the most incredible excursion of any type for both of us. The Fast Cat was absolutely incredible. They tell you that is is a little bumpy but fail to tell you that these are amazing fun bumps. They were not uncomfortable at all, just FUN! Make sure you bring plenty of room for lots of photos. This team at Captain Dave;s will make sure you see something. We want to thank you all again for the most incredible time we have ever had is a long, long time. I have a few more places to post my review so until we see you next year, thanks so much again.

It was a lot of firsts for us, including the first time on the ocean, first time whale watching, and first time in SoCal. Captain Dave's didn't disappoint at all. We went out on the smaller, faster pontoon boat (the Zodiac Dolphin & Whale Watching package), and we were not disappointed! We took the late morning tour, so the sun wasn't punishing at all. There had been sightings of a blue whale in the area, and the crew were eager to see if we could spot it as well. Part of the fun was in meeting the other passengers, who were mostly state locals that day, including one lady who was there as a birthday treat. We tracked and spotted a blue whale three times that day, and the crew of the vessel were happy to answer any and all questions. The boat is very sturdy, but you really feel the bobbing when sitting still on the water. (I'd recommend dramamine.) The two hours we spent on the water goes a lot faster than you would think once you've begun watching in earnest. Overall, it was exhausting, exciting, and worth the trip to California by itself! After disembarking, the captain passes out their famous brownies. Do yourself a favor and take one!

What a wonderful experience!! We went on the zodiac and had the joy of having Captain Marie and Stacy with us, who were both so friendly and knowledgeable about the ocean and marine life. We saw a handful of Pacific white-sided dolphins who swam right next to the boat and we could see them just by looking down on the sides! I think we saw four gray whales who gave us incredible flukes and Captain Marie and Stacy were so wonderful in making sure we all got a great view of them. You can tell they really cared about our experience and made sure to point things out to us and raced over to certain spots to ensure we all caught glimpses. I also definitely enjoyed the delicious brownies at the end--they were the cherry on top of an overall lovely time out on the water. I will definitely come back with Capt Dave's Whale Watching and maybe during a different month when other sightings may be more likely :)

The four of us plus eight others took the high speed Zodiac which cut through the water so nicely, no seasickness! Captain Gary was so amazing and he even kept us out a little longer than our tour so we could keep tracking this one whale! I would very highly recommend this tour to everyone !! One little thing: in the back of the boat you get great views but couldn’t hear Jess very well. Maybe if she turned around ?

The best local whale/dolphin watching in dana point! I highly recommend the tour on the zodiac, can't wait to get back out there again!

We chartered a private zodiac tour for a birthday celebration. Our party had people with a wide variety of ages and all of us had a great time. The charter boat during covid restrictions was a wonderful choice to not expose our elderly parents. It was an excellent value for the money and Captain Jim was a knowledgeable, friendly and professional guide. I feel it was well worth every penny we paid. Since it was a small boat we could quickly go to wherever the reports of sightings were, allowing us to see an abundance of sea life. Thank you Captain Dave's! Let's do it again sometime!

Tour Review: Lindblad Expeditions' Baja California: Among the Great Whales

I t’s a funny thing to know ahead of time that a trip will be a life-changing experience. But one look at the Lindblad Expeditions itinerary Baja California: Among the Great Whales made it clear this was one of those rare times. But as I packed for my trip , I wondered if I had built it up too much in my mind, and that the actual experience might not be able to meet these high expectations.

I needn’t have worried. This excellent expedition cruise helped me reconnect with awe, nature, and gave me space to push my personal boundaries in a safe manner. The ship, the National Geographic Venture, was comfortable, well-appointed, and quickly came to feel like home (always a nice trait on a cruise of more than a few days).

DEEP DIVE: What to know about Lindblad before you book

The primary focus of this seasonal sailing is on whales—it takes place during the time gray and humpback whales are in Baja birthing and nursing their young before taking them north along their migratory route. But whales are just a small part of the incredible spectrum of wildlife you’re likely to see on this tour.

On my early February sailing, in addition to humpback and gray whales, we also saw sea lions, sea turtles, so many fish, dozens of dolphins, and enough birdlife that the birders onboard were nearly always aflutter. There’s also a lot to learn about the Baja California Sur ecosystem.

The safety part felt well-tended, which gave me lots of room to push my personal boundaries. I snorkeled above a swirling school of thousands of shining fish, swam with adolescent sea lions, paddle boarded in uninhabited bays, and (with some help from motion sickness meds), bounced across the waves in a panga (a small local boat) to catch glimpses of gray whales spy hopping.

This cruise felt like a beacon for people who travel with care, curiosity, and a sense of environmental responsibility.

Things to Know About Baja California: Among the Great Whales

  • The staff is large and impressive, and includes a mix of hospitality pros, scientists, and guides, all of whom are professional, personable, and seem to really like their jobs.
  • The photos of the National Geographic Venture on the Lindblad site aren’t bad, but they don’t do it justice. Rooms on the ship are comfortable, feel upscale, and are tended to daily by hospitality staff that keeps everything in tip-top shape. I was way more impressed in person than I thought I would be based on the photos.
  • There’s snorkeling and whale watching, but there’s no snorkeling with whales. Whale watching happens from both the ship’s deck and from small local boats called pangas.
  • The onboard food is great. More on that below, but I was uniformly delighted by the meals.
  • I mentioned it above, but Lindblad’s culture of safety is next level. Whether it was going from the ship to a zodiac, stepping into the water during a beach landing, or snorkeling with sea lions, I always saw and felt the ways in which staff were actively keeping guests safe.
  • Short-sleeve wetsuits, fins, and snorkel sets are provided to each guest along with life jackets.

Tour Highlights

  • Snorkeling in Cabo Pulmo National Park
  • Sunrise snorkeling with sea lions at Los Islotes

  • Photography and naturalist walks on uninhabited islands
  • Learning sessions onboard the ship

Important Details About Baja California: Among the Great Whales

This eight-day expedition cruise trades off going eastbound and westbound around the tip of Baja California Sur. It includes time in Magdalena Bay on the Pacific side of the peninsula (a good jumping-off point to see gray whale mother and baby pairs), and an extended period on the Sea of Cortez.

PICTURE PERFECT: Whale photography tips from a pro

Every day, there’s at least one—and often two—big activities. Snorkeling, whale and wildlife watching trips aboard smaller boats (pangas and zodiacs), a city day in La Paz, and excursions to uninhabited islands and beaches are all on the itinerary. Note that the itinerary can shift depending on weather conditions (on my sailing, high winds meant some of our activities changed on the final day).

Each day felt interesting and varied, and naturalist talks and walks offered chances to learn a ton along the way.

Route Notes

On eastbound sailings, you fly into Loreto (on the Sea of Cortez side of the peninsula) and then take the two-and-a-half hour bus ride to San Carlos the Pacific side. On westbound sailings, you fly into Loreto and take a quick shuttle ride to the port to board the boat.

This is a pretty active cruise (though there’s always the option to hang out back at the ship). Activities include snorkeling, and on some of the snorkeling excursions, guests need to be able to use a small ladder to get in and out of the zodiac or panga (a small local boat style). There’s paddle boarding and kayaking, hiking and walking, and a city day in La Paz that includes a cultural performance and dinner. There’s also a lot of whale watching, both from the ship and aboard pangas.

Onboard, there are daily naturalist, photographer, and scientist talks, as well as a nightly meeting where guests and staff gather to recap the day and look ahead to the next day’s activities.

Accessibility

On my sailing, there were guests across the mobility spectrum. A number of the activities required getting into and out of zodiacs, doing water landings at beaches, transferring between boats (from a zodiac to a panga and back again), and some snorkeling excursions used ladders to get back up into small boats. But since it’s a cruise, guests could easily opt to stay on the ship, where there were lovely views, good food, an onboard library, and sun decks. The ship has an elevator, and when it was out of service, crew helped passengers with mobility issues move between the decks.

In my opinion, this sailing is a good fit for families with kids who are relatively responsible and good swimmers. On sailings during school vacations and on those where there’s enough families onboard, Lindblad has a certified field educator onboard who leads kid activities throughout the trip as part of the company’s National Geographic Global Explorers program. The ship has rooms that comfortably fit three, and also has a few adjoining rooms for two that can be configured as a suite for a family of four.

FAMILY ADVENTURES: Our top picks for family-friendly tour companies

The onboard food is great. Breakfast is served as a buffet and lunch and dinner are both a la carte multi-course meals. The vibe in the dining room is casual (no one dresses up) and friendly, and you can sit wherever you like.

Big windows offer great views of the scenery, and the dining room staff are all kind and friendly. Freshly baked bread is served with each meal, and there’s a nice variety of appetizers and main courses daily. The serving sizes are modest in an attempt to reduce food waste, but it’s always ok to ask for another portion or another item.

There’s also a staffed bar in the lounge for drinks (included in the price of the cruise), plus a snacks, coffee, tea, and water area that’s refreshed regularly (and is the place to find the delicious little bags of freshly baked cookies the kitchen puts out). The espresso machine is self-serve, and makes great drinks (including decaf versions of coffee drinks). On most evenings there’s also a cocktail hour with signature drinks and appetizers in the lounge.

The National Geographic Venture has a fitness room, and the wellness coordinator offers daily early morning stretch classes on one of the decks. There are also spa services available for a fee. One of the coolest things offered onboard is the Gear Locker , a treasure trove of cameras, lenses, and other photography equipment available for guests to borrow.

Also available in the lounge: binoculars, sea sickness medication, and ginger candies. The ship is also staffed with a doctor (on my sailing, the doc helped me one night when the waves got bigger and seasickness kicked in). And daily, there’s a paper digest version available of the New York Times (it’s in a cubby near the gift shop).

In each stateroom, bathrooms come equipped with shampoo, conditioner, and body soap; plus a little baggie with SPF lip balm, a bar of exfoliating body soap, a great little loofah thing, and some foot cream.

Best for/Worst for

This tour is absolutely magical for relatively active people who love seeing wildlife and have an interest in conservation. I wouldn’t say you need a high level of fitness, but being able to get on and off a small boat (with help from the very safety conscious crew) is a regular occurrence, and so you’d want to be fairly confident with your ability to do that.

This tour would be tricky for people with significant mobility issues as well as for families with very young children.

A note about seasickness: I am prone to seasickness, but used the scopolamine patch on my sailing and had good results (my only issues came when the patch came off in the shower without me noticing it and after I removed the final patch and had some rebound nausea for about 36 hours). Most people on my sailing didn’t seem particularly effected by the rocking, especially on the more sheltered Sea of Cortez side. Sailing up the Pacific side of Baja California Sur was a bit rough, but once we moved into the protected bays where we spent the rest of the trip, it was fine again.

One of few all-inclusive resorts in Florida, the resort offers luxuries spanning an in-town courtesy car to complimentary valet parking, along with amenities such as free cruiser bikes and daily yoga sessions. While here, go for a dip in one of two outdoor pools, relax on 1,000 feet of private beach, or get out on the water in one of the resort's kayaks or paddleboards. Twosomes who crave peace and quiet will love visiting Little Palm Island Resort & Spa , a Noble House property. Inside all of the British West Indies-inspired bungalow suites, visitors will discover details like vaulted ceilings, private decks and indoor-outdoor showers. Dial up the romance even further by adding on a turndown package that includes perks like a bottle of Champagne, a drawn bath for two and chocolate-covered strawberries. But while the resort is certainly laden with luxury, what makes Little Palm Island's suites ideal for couples is what they lack: Guests won't find TVs or telephones inside the accommodations, an intentional move by the resort to help travelers disconnect from everyday stress.

When you're ready to venture outside your digs, you can arrange off-site fishing excursions, scuba diving outings and more through the concierge or take advantage of the resort's countless amenities. The on-site spa offers a variety of treatments, including couples massages and an aromatherapy bath, while the beach is the place to go for activities like paddleboarding and kayaking. Upon entering the "Pink Palace," you and your sweetheart will feel as if you've stepped back in time thanks to the property's old-Florida details, such as retro tile floors, wicker furnishings and palm leaf print. This Roaring '20s vibe is especially apparent in the lobby bar, which plays live jazz music and serves a selection of sophisticated cocktails and small plates. For a more romantic setting, grab a sweet treat at the ice cream parlor before enjoying a sunset, or cuddle by one of The Rowe Bar's outdoor fire pits. Maritana, the main restaurant, is the place to go if your ideal date night involves dressing up and savoring gourmet seafood.

Later, you can go for a dip in one of two heated outdoor pools, pamper yourselves at the full-service spa or borrow loaner bicycles to check out nearby attractions like Fort De Soto Park, a 1,136-acre park that sits a little more than 5 miles south of the property. When it's time to bed down, you and your partner will enjoy charming digs decorated with blush-pink tones and beds dressed in plush linens. Some previous guests said basic rooms are small, so for more elbow room, reserve one of the hotel's penthouses, whose two-story layouts come with kitchenettes and furnished balconies.

Begin your vacation sunbathing at Lummus Park, or head north to Haulover Park for some fun in the sun sans clothing. If your stomachs start to grumble, sit down for an Italian-inspired meal in Casa Tua's garden; the tropical plants, hanging lanterns and candles will help set the mood. Another top dining option involves savoring plates of salmon tartare, wagyu beef gyoza or truffle risotto at the rooftop restaurant Juvia.

Where to stay: In the evening, hang your hats at Fontainebleau Miami Beach , one of the best hotels in the city. Past guests praised the attentive staff and clean accommodations (which include amenities like iMac computers and minibars) but said it was the property's on-site facilities that set it apart from the rest. Duos can swim in one of 11 pools, lounge on the beach and enjoy a luxurious spa treatment, among other activities.

The Breakers Palm Beach: Palm Beach

This colossal South Florida property – which has been a fixture in Palm Beach since 1896 and sits less than 2 miles from downtown West Palm Beach – features an extravagant appearance that pays homage to Rome's Villa Medici. After driving down the palm-lined driveway at  The Breakers , past manicured lawns and a Florentine Fountain, step into the grandiose lobby to admire beautiful Venetian chandeliers hanging from painted ceilings. Though standard accommodations come outfitted with everything you need for a romantic date night in (think: minibars, plush bathrobes and flat-screen TVs), you may want to upgrade to a Flagler Club room or suite to make your stay extra memorable. These accommodations, which sit on two restricted floors of the resort, come with exclusive perks like chauffeured Tesla car service, a cocktail hour, and access to a private lounge and rooftop terrace.

Outside your room or suite, you'll find numerous amenities made for twosomes. Head to the resort's private beach to enjoy activities like paddleboarding, kayaking and surfing; lounge by the adults-only infinity pool; tee off on the state's oldest golf course; or treat yourselves to a personalized couples massage at the spa. When you're ready to eat, sit down for a meal at the property's steakhouse or seafood bar, both of which earn rave reviews from past patrons. Another top dining option is nearby Renato's, an Italian-inspired eatery with an enchanting outdoor courtyard.

Different from the region's mega beach resorts , the White Elephant Palm Beach feels more like a private residence, with just 19 suites and 13 guest rooms. The aethestic varies from many local hotels, too, with black-and-white-striped awnings, terracotta roof tilings and hardwood floors throughout the property. Complete with a patio, pool and ice cream cart serving complimentary treats, the lush outdoor courtyard is the ultimate place to relax and recharge at this boutique hotel. And at the brand's signature restaurant, Lola 41, you can enjoy globally inspired cuisine and seafood specialties.

If and when you and partner are ready to dig your toes in the sand, grab your complimentary beach gear and hop on the hotel shuttle (also complimentary), which will transport you to the beach a few blocks away. For other romantic rendezvous in Palm Beach, you can borrow bikes, be chauffeured into town via a BMW 7 Series luxury sedan or book an exclusive excursion aboard a Barton & Gray yacht.
