Anathema are a British progressive rock band. They formed in Liverpool, England in 1990, and their music has run the gamut stylistically, from death/doom in their early days to progressive and symphonic rock more recently.

Originally known as Pagan Angel upon their formation, they were comprised of three brothers - Vincent, Daniel and Jamie Cavanagh - as well as drummer John Douglas and singer Darren White. The current lineup is comprised of Vincent on rhythm guitar, Daniel playing lead, Jamie on bass - after a ten year absence between 1991 and 2001 - Douglas now on keyboards, his brother Lee on vocals, and Daniel Cardoso behind the drum kit. They’ve slowly transitioned not just through various lineups and reshuffles - Vincent originally took on vocal duties after White left in 1995 - but also through different genres, too, with their death/doom origins gradually giving way to a gothic metal period in the nineties and then, more recently, into full-blown progressive rock.

Despite all this upheaval, they’ve continued to tour and record with a sizeable cult fanbase keeping them going, and they remain a fixture on the European tour circuit. Their tenth album, ‘Distant Satellites’, was released in 2014, and incorporates aspects of all of their different sounds to date, underpinned by an undercurrent of new prog. The record was met with unanimous critical acclaim, with the reviews aggregator Metacritic awarding it an average score of 81.

Live reviews

Given the city’s long-standing association with the pop sounds of The Beatles, perhaps Liverpool isn’t the most obvious place for a progressive rock band to hail from - especially one so in thrall, over the course of a near twenty-five year career, to sounds that have included symphonic rock, death metal, doom metal and gothic metal, as well as more straightforward alternative rock. Anathema are precisely that, though; the current lineup involves Vincent, Daniel and Jamie Cavanagh - all brothers - as well as another set of siblings, John and Lee Douglas, together with Daniel Cardoso, a Portuguese multi-instrumentalist.

The band released their tenth album, Distant Satellites, earlier this year, and as usual saw it chart in Finland, Germany, Holland and Greece, countries in which they retain a strong cult following. That’s down in no small part to the amount of touring they’ve done in those nations, with their technically proficient live shows being the stuff of legend amongst their fans. They still have a cult following in the UK, too, and they’ll bring Distant Satellites to intimate rooms across the country this coming September, before setting off on a wider European jaunt that is currently set to last well into November, taking them all across the continent.

At the HiFi in Brisbane Australia on 21st August 2014 Anathema made their first appearance down-under. This was one of the best concerts I have ever been to (and I have been to many). From their opening song Untouchable Part 1 (Weather Systems) through to the last song Sleepless (The Silent Enigma). Anathema played with so much emotion, energy and commitment that it (almost ) made it worth waiting 2 1/2 decades to see . Highlights included a powerful rendering of the song Anathema (Distance Satellites). Some of the other songs they played were; Thin Air, Deep, The Storm Before the Calm, Closer, A Natural Disaster, Distant Satellites and A Simple Mistake.Vinnie and Lee sang with great harmony and emotion. Danny also sang and played piano but his prowess is firstly as a guitarist and did not disappoint. They played songs from most of their albums and recognised that some of their fans would want some of the older music as well as their recent. They played for two hours and had two encores. All of the band seemed genuinely pleased to be in Australia and in front of a grateful audience who were enthusiastic and included a wide range of people.

The 1st Anathema has sold out a show in Glasgow, and what a show! Opening the set with the lost song parts 1&2 set the standard for the rest of the night—utter class. Everything from vocals to keys were note perfect! Lee's vocals were just sublime. One of the best gigs I've been to in a while & I recommend Seeing anathema even if your not a fan,you will be after. A must see band & can't wait to see them again.10/10

Showcasing their latest album, The Optimist, Anathema' Sydney show was nothing short of spectacular. It was the third time I've seen them at The Metro, and the venue seems to be the perfect fit for them. Personal highlights were The Beginning And The End, A Simple Mistake and the first half of Looking Outside Inside.

The VIP experience was really well run, too. Best concert of 2017 for me.

This was one of the happiest days of my life!

I've been listening to Anathema since I was in early college years (about 12 years ago)... I used to listen to their Judgement non-stop! Especially in my graduation project... Lots of memories :)

The fact that they also were celebrating their musical life made the concert very special!

It was just perfect!

Geweldig concert, heb erg genoten. Teleurgesteld over slechte lichtshow.

How many superlatives would suffice for this tremendous show? Quite simply stunning. A real band making real music. Vinnie and Lee's vocals were brilliant, Danny was in superb form on guitar, vocals and backing vocals. And when the full band came on, the quality never wavered. Brilliant songs brilliantly performed in an outstanding venue.

It was a good gig but there was 2 issues that stopped it from being amazing. First one is, the bassist was not able to come so all the bass was automated. Second one was, the sound system at the Milyon Performance Hall was so bad that it even blasted off while the band playing Angelica, luckily it came back quickly so the show continued.

Anathema konseri bu işyeri yüzünden mahv oldu. 2 kelime ingilizce bilmeyeni işik başına koymuşlar.

nekadar FUCK dediler adamlar hak etti zaten.

Fişler sürekli çikiyordu. yani Vincent sorduğu gibi "izmirde başka çalabileçeğimiz yer yok muydu?"

umarım yeterinde kendisi sizlerle kavga etmiş bu rezillik için.

fantastic band, great song writers and amazing live show performers. I have been listening to them since 1998, still having fun in their live shows. no exaggeration; they are one of the best bands of all times. Boston has to be always in their U.S tour list! Finally, they deserve a larger venue with better acoustics in Boston.

About anathema.

Anathema are a British rock band from Liverpool. The line-up consists of singers and guitarists Vincent and Daniel Cavanagh, their brother Jamie Cavanagh on bass, siblings John and Lee Douglas, respectively drummer and singer, and keyboardist Daniel Cardoso since November 2012. The band was founded as Pagan Angel in 1990 by the three Cavanagh siblings, John, and singer Darren White, as a death/doom band. At the time White was the only singer of the band. The following year, Jamie left and was replaced by Duncan Patterson. Under this line-up, Anathema released their first EP, The Crestfallen (1992), and their first album, Serenades (1993). However, White left in 1995; Vincent decided to act as Anathema's vocalist in addition to his guitarist function in the albums The Silent Enigma (1995) and Eternity (1996), which were going into a more gothic metal direction. In 1997, John left the band, and was replaced by Shaun Steels for the album Alternative 4 (1998). Both Patterson and Steels left the same year, replaced by Dave Pybus and a returning John Douglas, while former My Dying Bride keyboardist and violinist Martin Powell also joined the band (Daniel Cavanagh was also acting as the band's only keyboardist, and shared this position since). The only album released with this line-up was Judgement (1999): the same year Powell switched positions with Cradle of Filth's keyboardist Les Smith who joined Anathema, and Lee Douglas, John's sister, was added to the line-up as a backing and occasional lead vocalist. The band released their sixth album A Fine Day to Exit in 2001, turning to an alternative sound. Shortly after the release, Pybus announced his departure and was replaced by the band's original bassist, Jamie Cavanagh, reuniting the three brothers in the band for the first time since 1991. There were no new members for the next ten years, with the albums A Natural Disaster (2003) and We're Here Because We're Here (2010) all being recorded and released by the same line-up, with the sound turning even more towards progressive rock; however, Daniel Cavanagh left Anathema in 2002 to join Antimatter, returning in 2003. Smith left Anathema in 2011, and Vincent and Daniel both assumed the function of keyboardist for the band's ninth album, Weather Systems, in 2012. The same year, Cardoso, the band's live keyboardist since 2011, joined as a full-time member. The band's tenth studio album, Distant Satellites, was released on 9 June 2014 via Kscope. Their eleventh album, The Optimist, won "Album of the Year" at the 2017 Progressive Music Awards.

ANATHEMA Announces European 10th-Anniversary Tour In Celebration Of “We’re Here Because We’re Here” Album

anathema tour

ANATHEMA  will celebrate the tenth anniversary of its iconic release  “We’re Here Because We’re Here” by taking the album on the road for a series of exclusive shows throughout Europe in March 2020. Tickets will go on-sale Friday at 10am BST via anathemamusic.com/tour-dates/

Upon its release,   “We’re Here Because We’re Here” was their first collection of new material in six years and they exploded back into action with a multi-coloured, multi-layered work of unbridled emotion, passion and intensity which saw it awarded Classic Rock ‘s “Prog Album Of The Year” as well as lauded by  Kerrang! ,  Metal Hammer  and many more.

Talking about the tour,  Danny Cavanagh  says: “We never usually do anniversary tours of particular albums, but in the case of  ‘We’re Here Because We’re Here’ , which is the album that began our rebirth, we feel this is something we want to do. What I love about this album and that time in our journey is the life affirming qualities in the music. It’s an album of hope, reflection, of summer, of an intense uplifting emotion. We will do all we can to augment the trip with a never before seen light and video show to enhance the experience. Join us in the dreaming light.”

Talking further,  Vincent Cavanagh  says: “Well, putting aside my incredulity that it has been almost 10 years, I’m really into the idea of this tour from a creative perspective. How will we play these songs live now? How will some songs have evolved in the meantime? What can we do with the visual production? It’s a great record to revisit as the themes are still as honest and personal as they’ve always been but there are more shafts of light that cut through the darkness. The plan is to do two sets: the ‘We’re Here Because We’re Here’ album in full and then a second set comprising the best stuff from the other records and maybe a brand new song or two… Hope to see you there!”

The award-winning alternative rock masters have released 11 studio albums of fearless and uncompromising beauty. Ever since their debut,  “Serenades” , in 1993, they’ve refused to be pigeonholed and have continuously evolved; all the way up to their most recent studio album, 2017’s conceptual masterstroke  “The Optimist” , which revealed some of the darkest, most challenging music they ever put their name to, as well as a series of live albums and compilations.  “We’re Here Because We’re Here”  has become an integral part of the bands journey so far, and next March gives the band and fans the chance to revisit the album of shimmering majesty and fully immerse themselves in the live experience.

The band recently announced that it has signed to the  Mascot Label Group  and will work on a new album to come in 2020.

Anathema Music | Liverpool Band. The Optimist out now!

optimist /ˈɒptɪmɪst/ noun: optimist; plural noun: optimists

1. a person who tends to be hopeful and confident about the future or the success of something. 2. a person who believes that this world is the best of all possible worlds or that good must ultimately prevail over evil..

The title for Anathema’s eleventh full-length would also serve well in describing the Liverpool sextet’s uncompromising dedication to fearless artistry since forming in 1990. They’ve continually evolved by placing hope in the future – from leaving the underground scene they were fundamental in establishing to continually mesmerising the world with stargazing post-progressive alternative rock that knows no borders. Led by brothers Daniel and Vincent Cavanagh, along with drummer John Douglas, singer Lee Douglas, bassist Jamie Cavanagh and keyboardist/drummer Daniel Cardoso – this is a band that have forsaken all notion of expectation – highly evocative music simply pours out of them. And in a world of plastic conformists so desperately awaiting their moment of recognition, it’s a potent truth very much needed…

“We’ve been honest with ourselves from the start in writing deeply personal music,” admits lead singer/multi-instrumentalist Vincent. “It’s just that in the earlier days, it was cloaked in heavier instrumentation. When you’re a teenager, it’s natural to want to go ‘all or nothing’. We had a 23-minute ambient piece, classical ideas, multi-layered guitar harmonies, acoustic folky stuff, reversed tape experiments, long psychedelic sections, spoken word… all of that. But we quickly learned that the best way to get to the core of emotion in music is to strip away the layers. Melody is everything, then lyrics, rhythm and bass. Is it meaningful? Does it move you? Start with that… if the answer is yes, then you can start to think about experimenting.”

Despite those early records being hailed as classics, the band left their heavier roots and transcended into a more emotional heaviness that resonated deep within the heart of the listener. Alternative 4 (1998), Judgement (1999), A Fine Day To Exit (2001) and A Natural Disaster (2003) marked an era of bold experimentation for the band – taking the notion of self-exploration to its furthest limits – before 2010’s We’re Here Because We’re Here truly cemented their stature as world-beating post-progressive kings.

“Any musical growth we have achieved has been a natural process,” says lead songwriter Daniel Cavanagh. “From our early bass player Duncan Patterson’s Pink Floyd-leanings onwards, we’ve never really looked back. We feel lucky to have developed into a writing team that at times can feel telepathic. Oh and by the way – if we wanted to sell out, we would never have changed at all.”

After 2012’s award-winning Weather Systems and 2014’s spellbinding Distant Satellites , the ambient rockers are back with their eleventh full-length, The Optimist : some of the darkest, most challenging and – quite frankly – unexpected music they’ve put their name to. It twists and turns like no album before it, bringing miraculous wide-eyed wonder to even the most well-versed of fans. Recorded in the winter of 2016 and produced by Tony Doogan [Mogwai, Belle & Sebastien, Super Furry Animals] at Attica Audio in Donegal and Castle Of Doom studios in Glasgow, the 11 tracks of The Optimist manage to somehow push more boundaries then ever before, yet remaining forever loyal to the heart of every song. It could very well be their greatest masterpiece yet – stemming from an idea first planted in the artwork for A Fine Day To Exit all those years ago. Daniel Cavanagh explains how its front cover became an unlikely source of inspiration…

“I suppose you might say the album is semi-autobiographical because this time we used a surrogate,” he says, of the character that is The Optimist. “We put sound, feelings and crucially, our own hopes and fears into another person and made him the subject of the songs. I also began to write with visual stimuli more this time, using the feelings evoked by a certain image or moment and then weaving my own internal monologue into the narrative of The Optimist . It was John’s idea to write a narrative, so I took A Fine Day To Exit as the starting point. The brilliant songs of Vincent and John fit right in… we were a single mind during this writing process.”

“The guy who disappeared – you never knew what happened to him,” shrugs Vincent. “Did he start a new life? Did he succumb to his fate? It was never explained. The opening track title is the exact coordinates for Silver Strand beach in San Diego – the last known location of The Optimist – shown on the cover of A Fine Day to Exit .”

The character’s unresolved destiny was something that fascinated the three songwriting members and together they meticulously brought the unfinished story to an end – and most strikingly of all – one which is decided by the listener.

“Most of the songs are happening within the mind of the character,” adds Daniel, “and we intentionally left things open to interpretation. His feelings, his path, his fate, are ultimately up to the listener. It is for others to fit in the missing pieces from their own narrative… these songs are ambiguous.”

From the screaming guitar-driven post-rock of Springfield to the filmscore jazz noir brilliance of Close Your Eyes to the cerebral electronica of San Francisco , The Optimist is a journey full of wonder – each track carrying a kaleidoscopic spell of its own. It also marks a darker sound for the band in quite some time – perhaps most notably Daniel’s spine-tingling vocals on Wildfires circling around haunting piano chords before Vincent warns ‘It’s too late.’ By their own admission, it’s a darkness rooted in themes around mental and emotional struggles – how all of us, in some way or another, are forced into battles we can’t tangibly see in front of us…

“There’s always been a stigma around mental health because it’s invisible,” says Daniel, “and thankfully that is changing. Many people go through this kind of thing. One in four of the population I believe… it is as normal as any other illness, there’s nothing to be ashamed of. Things are better now, but the last few years haven’t been too easy and it came out in the music. I kept writing these dark piano moments like Wildfires or Springfield, which Vincent and John felt was the best material I had.”

Vincent, who undertook all of the pre-production duties in London before the band began tracking in Donegal and Glasgow, agrees there are definitely moments that feel unusually bleak and ominous in comparison to their more recent meditations. “There are moments on every song that put you on edge,” he nods. “When everything kicks in it sounds fucking massive – which, in a large part, is thanks to Tony. The first thing he suggested was the drum sound. He knew we wanted something ‘big’ so he suggested Attica, which has this enormous stone-walled live room with a high ceiling. He didn’t need to do a lot of tweaking, it already sounded massive – from there we were on to a winner. The second thing he suggested was that we record as a live band, which we hadn’t done for years. Having played a few tunes on the last tour, we were ready for that. Tony wanted to capture that energy you can only get with everyone facing each other… it makes a big difference. He was a superb guy to work with and I learned a lot making this record.”

Whatever the secret is – with undoubtedly The Album Of 2017 under their belts, it definitely seems to be working. Theirs is a name built on the most soul-baring and introspective forms of artistic expression. Rightfully so, Anathema’s shooting star looks set to burn perpetually brighter and brighter.

  • Anathema is a must-have for Sorcerers in Dragon's Dogma 2, as it can Silence foes, turning the tide of battle in the player's favor.
  • The Archistaff is fairly easy to obtain by finding it in the open world, making it a valuable weapon for Sorcerers early in the game.
  • While Anathema may only have a 17% chance to Silence enemies, its unique passive ability and ease of acquisition make it worth using.

There are a multitude of weapons for players to find and use in Dragon's Dogma 2 , as the game allows players to take advantage of a wide variety of vocations (classes), most of which require players to use different weapons. For example, one of Dragon's Dogma 2 's spell-casting vocations, the Sorcerer, uses an Archistaff as its weapon, which, unlike the Mage's normal Staves, can unleash more powerful Magick attacks to defeat their foes rather quickly. As player Sorcerers make their way through the story and world of Dragon's Dogma 2 , they will likely come across many different Archistaves, some more powerful than others. One of those Archistaves is Anathema, and it happens to be one of the game's best.

Anathema may not be Dragon's Dogma 2 's best Archistaff, but it's one every Sorcerer should strive to obtain. This is primarily due to the special passive ability that comes with it, as there is no other Archistaff like it. Thankfully, it can be acquired fairly easily and then used for a considerable amount of time throughout the game until players can obtain a more powerful Archistaff, such as the Lion-Lord's Archistaff or those obtainable only in Dragon's Dogma 2 's endgame. In fact, almost all of Dragon's Dogma 2 's best Archistaves are available only in its endgame, which is another reason why acquiring Anathema as soon as possible is worth the journey.

Dragon's Dogma 2 Proves Its Next Entry Has One Less Feature to Worry About

Dragon's Dogma 2 sets one standard for the next installment, so now a sequel can focus on improving what the second game missed instead.

Why Anathema Is a Must-Have for Dragon's Dogma 2 Sorcerers

Anathema has the ability to inflict the silence debilitation on foes.

What sets Anathema apart from other Archistaves is not its Magick damage or its Knockdown power , but its ability to inflict the Silence Debilitation on foes. When an enemy is inflicted with the Silence Debilitation, it is unable to cast spells for some time. As such, this particular debuff can turn the tide of battle, even when players are affected by it. This can be especially helpful when fighting Drakes, as they can use spells against the player and their Pawns.

With Anathema equipped, Dragon's Dogma 2 Sorcerers need only perform a normal attack to potentially Silence their foes. Unfortunately, the chance of Anathema successfully inflicting an enemy with Silence is only 17%. However, there is a 17% chance with every attack, which is significant when considering the benefits it can bring. Such a low proc chance might lead some players to quickly dismiss the weapon, but it is a deceiving number and should be heavily considered before setting the Archistaff aside.

Anathema Is Fairly Easy to Obtain

Despite being one of Dragon's Dogma 2 's best Archistaves, Anathema is fairly easy to obtain, as players can simply find it out in the open world. There is a method for obtaining Anathema as an extremely rare drop from a Lich , but it is much easier to simply find it while exploring. That being said, finding Anathema is only easy in the sense that it doesn't require players to defeat a boss or an otherwise difficult enemy. Unfortunately, players will still need to make a rather long journey into a dangerous area to acquire it.

Anathema can be easily retrieved from a chest in Dragonsbreath Tower , which players will visit if they follow through with helping Sigurd defeat the Lesser Dragon that attacked Melve. Though obtaining Anathema simply requires players to open the chest containing it, they will still need to journey to the southern edges of Wyrmsblood Forest in South Battahl and then climb Dragonsbreath Tower. Near where the fight with the Lesser Dragon takes place, players can find the chest containing Anathema behind a breakable wall in the tower.

While better Archistaves can be acquired in Dragon's Dogma 2 's endgame area, the Unmoored World , Anathema is still one of the best to obtain beforehand. As such, Sorcerer players should strive to acquire it as soon as possible.

Dragon's Dogma 2: Why Anathema is a Must-Have for Any Sorcerer

NFL player Harrison Butker is correct about motherhood. He's wrong about our choices.

Butker is correct that motherhood holds far more value and worth for many women, including myself..

Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker delivered a controversial  commencement speech last Saturday, during Benedictine College's graduation ceremony in Atchison, Kansas. It sparked swift and furious backlash in news and on social media.

Butker, 28 , used his platform and opportunity to gloss over half a dozen hot topics, from the roles of men and women to the LGBTQ+ community to hurtful COVID-19 policies and abortion.

But what caught my attention was Butker's comments about the role of women, work and motherhood. As a working mom myself, Butker's comments highlighted an ongoing conflict moms have within themselves and society. It's not quite as simple as Butker portrays, but it's not as complicated as it seems.

Another view: Harrison Butker decries diversity, but he can thank Black QB Patrick Mahomes for his fame

Butker made a strong statement about women, work and motherhood

"For the ladies present today, congratulations on an amazing accomplishment," Butker said. "I want to speak directly to you briefly because I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolical lies told to you. ... Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world."

Butker also said his wife Isabelle seems to value her "vocation as a wife and as a mother" most and doesn't regret becoming either.

This seems to have made a lot of people mad. A petition at Change.org has been started, calling on the Kansas City Chiefs to dismiss its kicker due to his "dehumanizing" remarks.

Surprise! A lot of women value motherhood, but not all.

What Butker describes is an orthodox view of the roles of men and women, which holds that women are happiest and most satiated at home, raising children and being a wife.

For a lot of women, this is the case.

This activist was wrong: Yes, this anti-abortion activist's sentencing was extreme. But she was still wrong

These are also traditional Catholic views, and Butker spoke at Benedictine College, a Catholic private liberal arts school about 50 miles northwest from Kansas City, Missouri, where the Chiefs are headquartered.

For women who want to be homemakers and are married to kind, selfless and humble men who aren't obsessed with submission as a means of control, this lifestyle could be healthy for dedicated partners. It is certainly good for society for women to have babies, given the declining birth rate .

It's disheartening to see such a harsh reaction to traditional Catholic views. The extreme petition to "cancel" Butker or have him fired shows incredible ignorance and a lack of tolerance. It's fine to think that Butker is sexist, wrong or bigoted. But he has the right to hold orthodox views and should not lose his career over it.

It's exhausting to see a mantra of "diversity, equity and inclusion" in corporations, schools, colleges and organizations around the United States but see that it means only certain views are tolerated, only certain belief systems can be spoken of publicly.

Butker's views may not seem wise, progressive or healthy to women who want to have robust careers, who've suffered abuse in relationships or who simply don't understand more orthodox views. That's OK: They don't have to align with him or choose that path.

He's passionate about this, so he mentioned it in a speech. For women at a Catholic school's commencement wondering, in a world where women are breaking glass ceilings, if they can "just" stay at home and be a homemaker like they desire, perhaps they felt a sigh of relief or "permission" to follow their own calling in life. Butker did receive a round of applause after this portion of his speech.

Women might not have to choose as much as Butker thinks

Still, Butker's remark that all women will wish they chose motherhood over choosing a career is both a false binary and a bit more complicated. Not all women will want to become moms over becoming attorneys, and not all attorneys will be happier as stay-at-home moms or homemakers.

Butker can believe this based on his lived experience with his lovely wife, and that's OK − many people make life assessments from personal anecdotes.

The Met Gala was a joke: Yes, Zendaya looked stunning. But Met Gala was a tone-deaf charade of excess and hypocrisy.

What Butker did miss, perhaps for lack of time or nuance, is that women can be both great moms and have fantastic careers, though perhaps not simultaneously. In fact, a 2019 Gallup poll found that 56% of women preferred working to homemaking.

Women are also more likely to work part time than men. This could be because we're juggling raising the kids with wanting to help contribute financially to the family. For many families, especially "in this economy," as my teenage daughter is fond of saying, it feels absolutely necessary.

It's worth mentioning that given Butker's high-profile, lucrative career choice, his wife is likely not in a position to need to work, a privilege not all women have.

If I may interpret even further what Butker meant about "diabolical" lies being told to women, it's that there's only one way modern feminists think women can be happy, and that's climbing the corporate ladder. This is not true. But it's also untrue that women will only find motherhood rewarding (even if it's the most rewarding, which I think was his point). We can also find joy in careers and especially in doing both. Even though doing both is hard and a struggle many men don't have.

To women who want to be a mom and have kids, I say: Work toward doing both. Aim for a career that allows for the flexibility motherhood requires. This will eliminate some paths altogether but open up more, especially in today's post-pandemic world, where so many industries have embraced remote work. This will present challenges, but so would not having kids, or not having a career.

For me, motherhood holds more value than a career

As a woman who has lived a more orthodox, homemaker lifestyle (I used to home-school my kids) but who has also worked full time and then some, I can say I value being a mom the most.

My work, my calling as a writer, is important. I'm grateful for it. But my role as a mother is infinitely more treasured and worthwhile. There are millions of writers in the world. But I am only mom to four humans. It is this narrow, unique scope through which G.K. Chesterton suggested a mother know the " hugeness of her task ."

But if women want to become moms, have a career or do both, they should do it with gusto. Moms should have a lot of kids if they want them. I've heard many moms of one or two children wish they had more, but I've never heard a mom wish she had less.

The reaction to Butker's very Catholic speech to a Catholic college is not tolerance but a tyranny of ideology. Since when, in a post-modern world, can women not enjoy a career and motherhood? If anything, this is as backward as believing women should only have a thriving corporate career. This is anathema to feminism and the freedom American life offers.

People may choose to disagree with or even disdain Butker's views. This is their right as Americans. But it wouldn't hurt for people to realize millions of Americans hold orthodox views on women and family − and they're not all setting women back. Butker isn't entirely correct that all women should choose motherhood over work, but he is correct that motherhood holds far more value and worth for many women, including myself.

Florida shines under DeSantis' leadership. His liberal critics should learn from him.

Florida gov. ron desantis is proving that conservative policies can boost an economy and attract americans who want to thrive..

  • Florida has become one of the most popular and conservative states in America.
  • Florida has no income tax, and just last week, DeSantis signed additional tax relief for corporations.
  • Florida's economy is a huge draw. Its private sector job growth rate increased in January at double the national rate.

If you've wondered why folks are flocking to Florida and presume it's the sun, sand and surf, I have a better reason. Florida has much more to offer than its superior location and warmth. It has a great governor.

Florida has become one of the most popular and conservative states in America. Those two things are intertwined. While governors in blue states are losing residents by the thousands, hiking taxes and unable to fix crime, unemployment and homelessness, Gov. Ron DeSantis has turned the former swing state into a solidly red state.

That's exactly why Florida and its residents are thriving. The Republican party and voters should take note − and so should DeSantis. Their dance with each other may not be over yet.

DeSantis steers Florida's success in a masterclass of governing

Data shows that Florida is the second most popular state to move to, trailing Texas, and folks are coming from blue states like New York, Illinois and California. From 2022-2023, Florida gained 194,000 people from other states. While undoubtedly, some are retirees looking forward to spending their golden years on a beach somewhere, it looks like people are moving because they appreciate Florida's politics, spearheaded by DeSantis.

Though his presidential candidacy never really took off, it should have.

The Republican party dismissed DeSantis for two reasons: Trump's chokehold on the GOP and the awkwardness DeSantis displayed during debates. Trump's not much better in debates, but he wasn't there, so the GOP had to compare the debate performances of DeSantis, who is odd in public and seems anxious or stressed, to the version of Trump that lives voters minds.

Trump has such an obsessive hold on the party they couldn't forgive DeSantis' superficial flaws, like launching his campaign in a weird way online or smiling angrily during a debate.

DeSantis has led Florida's growth, pushing the state to new heights in the economy, education, low taxes and even crime. He's been so effective he's a prototype for other GOP governors to follow. Blue-state governors − Jared Polis (D-CO), Gavin Newsom (D-CA) and Kathy Hochul (D-New York), to name a few − should take note of what's working in Florida versus what's failing in their states. They just might see a better blueprint to use.

DEI is failing: Texas proves DEI programs aren't just wasteful – they've failed. Focus on merit instead.

When DeSantis won the governorship again in 2022, a massive red wave was predicted across the nation but didn't materialize, except in Florida. That year, DeSantis won by more than a million and a half votes, the largest margin of any Florida governor in 40 years . Incredibly, he flipped the solid-blue Miami-Dade County red − the first Republican gubernatorial candidate to win that county in 20 years. When he took office in 2018 , Florida had 300,000 more registered Democrats than Republicans. Today, Republicans hold a more-than 850,00 voter lead in the state.

Florida is a bastion of conservative policies that work

Florida basks in conservative policies, helmed by the former Naval officer who went to Harvard and Yale. He might have the pedigree of an "elitist," but he has the heart and soul of a conservative. Florida has no income tax, and just last week, he signed additional tax relief for corporations. He touts what he calls pro-family and anti-woke policies on education that families love. Together, these have boosted Florida's growth and economy.

For the second year in a row, U.S. News has ranked Florida No. 1 in education, specifically higher education. On violent crime , Florida is ranked 25th in the nation, somewhat below the national average. DeSantis is known for publicly and repeatedly backing law enforcement.

Florida's economy is a huge draw. Its private sector job growth rate increased in January at double the national rate and Florida’s workforce grew by 2.2 percent (+243,000) − faster than the national over-the-year rate. Democrat governors refuse to implement policies like lower taxes or ideas that promote job growth because they can't fathom such ideas actually work. It's anathema to their mindset. This is where they go wrong and why so many people are fleeing blue states .

Why critics are wrong or don't understand how DeSantis is effective

Critics quickly point out that DeSantis can be a lightning rod, instituting ideas they say are blatantly bigoted, far-right, unconstitutional or unreasonable. But those policies appeal to conservatives and haven't curtailed Florida's growth.

DeSantis signed laws that Vox declared "go further even than other red states" like banning gender-affirming care for minors, establishing a six-week  abortion  ban and permitless carry. While looked down upon in blue states as too traditional, alarming or scary, conservatives often want to live in a place that matches their values.

Leaning into his constituency and offering and implementing sound policies is where DeSantis is light-years ahead of liberal governors. While Newsom might find favor with his constituency, his policies are poor and continue to hurt California.

Same for Hochul. New York offered itself as a sanctuary state for migrants, which sounds altruistic, only to find itself overrun and New York Mayor Eric Adams stating angrily that they would destroy the beautiful city. Progressive policies often sound good, but Republican policies actually are.

DeSantis got a lot of heat for passing what critics called his “ Don’t Say Gay ” law. Dubbed dangerous and homophobic, the Parental Rights in Education Act required district school boards to adopt procedures that reinforced parental rights but also banned teaching about sexual identity to younger students. Critics said the language was vague and seemed to prevent teachers from discussing LGBTQ+ issues in class. In March, a settlement was reached and clarified the law. Teachers can discuss LGBTQ issues outside of formal instruction. Both DeSantis' office and LGBTQ+ allies dubbed the settlement a win.

DeSantis isn't just fighting 'wokeness.' He's fighting for policies that help his state thrive.

The Florida governor's most famous feud was probably with Florida's most famous corporation, Disney. After the company criticized DeSantis's parental rights law, he tried to strip Disney of its status as a special tax district. Two years of litigation later, the two reached a settlement in March over how Walt Disney World would develop in the future. While it's possible Disney should not have enjoyed its special tax status, and its progressive views infuriate Republicans, DeSantis does seem to have reached too far in suing the company in the first place. It looks too much like overreach and payback, something conservatives don't like when Democrats in power do it.

Still, DeSantis brags that he's fighting "wokeness," but in reality, his policy war has been so much more. He's really gone to fighting liberal policies that keep residents from paying high taxes, fumbling in a struggling economy, and failing to benefit from a good education. "Wokeness," in his mind, is the symptom, not the disease.

Florida is doing well because DeSantis embraced ideas that help Floridians thrive. Florida's example is why Republicans should have looked beyond DeSantis' superficial flaws and focused on what he's implemented. A DeSantis/Nikki Haley ticket could have rid the party of Trump, a fraudulent pariah, and paved the way for a new path forward.

Now, instead of seeing Florida-like policies everywhere, you have to move to the Sunshine State to benefit.

The Chinese government does not have US consumer interests at heart —

Biden set to levy 100% tariffs on chinese evs this week, both the us and eu are deeply concerned about heavily subsidized chinese oems..

Jonathan M. Gitlin - May 13, 2024 3:45 pm UTC

The photo is filled with row after row of new SUVs, all painted white or grey.

President Joe Biden is expected to levy new 100 percent tariffs targeted at specific Chinese industries, including electric vehicles, on Tuesday. The announcement follows growing calls from automakers, unions, and bipartisan efforts in Congress to address the problem of China unfairly subsidizing its own industries to undermine foreign competitors.

Why are Chinese EVs so cheap?

The Chinese government has been giving its green industries heavy direct subsidies for some time now, far in excess of those handed out by US or European governments . For EV makers like BYD, this has meant billions of dollars a year, in addition to the consumer-facing tax benefit for car buyers, similar to how EV sales are incentivized in the US.

Brands like BYD have concentrated on making their cars cheaper to build —only using one windshield wiper instead of two, for example—but also through vertical integration. Other than Tesla, automakers in the US, Europe, Japan, and Korea instead rely heavily on multiple tiers of suppliers, most of whom supply parts to more than one automaker.

Chinese EV makers have also embraced technology to a degree still not matched by other brands, with screens stretching across entire dashboards and online connected services ( plus the associated government tracking ) that are anathema to many Ars readers. (Indeed, in February, the US Department of Commerce opened an investigation into whether imported Chinese-connected cars pose a national security threat . The Chinese government has repeatedly restricted the places that Tesla drivers are allowed take their cars, as it considers them a threat to its own security.)

That has allowed Chinese automakers to sell their products in foreign markets at prices no one else can hope to compete with, undermining local industries in the process. This has been most relevant in Europe, where Chinese automakers like BYD and MG have already set up shop. Last year, 1 in 5 EVs sold in Europe were made in China; this year, it's expected this number will rise to 1 in 4.

What’s everyone doing about it?

Last year, the European Union began an investigation into anticompetitive behavior by Chinese OEMs, and stronger EU tariffs on Chinese EVs are expected to be levied in the next few weeks .

Chinese car imports to the US are already subject to an additional 25 percent import tariff on top of the 2.5 percent tariff that applies to any car imported to the US . And Chinese brands have yet to enter the US market. If enacted this week, the new 102.5 percent tariffs would apply to Polestar and Lotus , both of which currently build their US-market EVs in China. But that doesn't mean the industry isn't terrified.

"If there are no trade barriers established, they will pretty much demolish most other car companies in the world," said Tesla CEO Elon Musk in January.

"If you cannot compete fair and square with the Chinese around the world, then 20 percent to 30 percent of your revenue is at risk," said Ford CEO Jim Farley in February.

It probably goes without saying that the United Auto Workers also thinks protecting the US auto industry is worthwhile. "The transition to cleaner technologies cannot be used to intensify the global race to the bottom through offshoring and low wages. We need to see movement by the administration to protect these jobs. The nascent EV industry needs tariff protections—otherwise we are going to be awash in imports. The stakes of the transition are high for American workers," the union said in a statement in March .

US politicians have already passed laws to counter the threat of China dumping EVs here. The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 revised how the IRS clean vehicle tax credit works ; the consumer subsidy is now only eligible on vehicles assembled in North America. Each year, an increasing amount of the battery pack's content and value must also have originated in the US or a country with which we have a free trade agreement in order to be eligible, and EVs with Chinese batteries are explicitly not eligible .

This year, senators on both sides of the aisle—most recently Sherrod Brown (D–Ohio)— have called for a ban on Chinese EV imports . And pressure from the US Trade Representative has seen the Mexican government promise not to offer incentives to Chinese EV makers looking to establish a beachhead inside the United States-Mexico-Canada Free Trade Agreement.

Ars is weird. If United States is investing green technology and makes it cheaper for everyone, then it would be great for climate change and humanity. If China is doing the same? Oh it would be better to protect companies that only aim for short term profit by producing gigantic SUV and truck.

Rishi Sunak’s Dismal Task: Leading U.K. Conservatives to Likely Defeat

After 14 years of Conservative government, Britain’s voters appear hungry for change. And Prime Minister Rishi Sunak seems unable to persuade them otherwise.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and others sit around a large table inside a Downing Street room.

By Mark Landler

Reporting from London

A few days before Britain’s Conservative Party suffered a stinging setback in local elections on Thursday, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak recorded a short video to promote some good news from his government. In the eight-second clip , Mr. Sunak poured milk from a pint bottle into a tall glass, filled with a steaming dark beverage and bearing the scribbled figure of 900 pounds on the side.

“Pay day is coming,” Mr. Sunak posted, referring to the savings that an average wage earner would supposedly reap from a cut in mandatory contributions to Britain’s national insurance system.

The mockery soon started. He’d added too much milk, some said. His numbers didn’t add up, said others. And why, asked one critic, would Mr. Sunak choose a pint bottle as a prop days after the opposition Labour Party’s deputy leader, Angela Rayner, had skewered him in Parliament as a “pint-size loser”?

However partisan her jab, loser is a label that Mr. Sunak is finding increasingly hard to shake, even among his members of his own party. In the 18 months since he replaced his failed predecessor, Liz Truss , Mr. Sunak, 43, has lost seven special parliamentary elections and back-to-back local elections.

This past week’s local elections, in which the Conservatives lost about 40 percent of the 985 seats they were defending , were merely the latest signpost on what analysts say is a road to thumping defeat in a general election. National polls show the Labour Party leading the Conservatives by more than 20 percentage points , a stubborn gap that the prime minister has been unable to close.

The drumbeat of bad news is casting fresh scrutiny on Mr. Sunak’s leadership and the future of his party, which has been in power for 14 years but faces what could be a long stretch in the political wilderness.

For now, Mr. Sunak appears to have quieted talks that a cabal of Conservative lawmakers would try to oust him before the vote, which is expected in the autumn. The local results, while bad, were not as catastrophic as they could have been, averting a full-fledged panic among his colleagues. Having cycled through three prime ministers since the last election, the Tories are also running out of alternative leaders.

Embattled as he is, Mr. Sunak seems likely to limp to the general election as the standard-bearer of an exhausted, divided party.

“The broader view is that it’s probably better now to let Rishi stay in his post and absorb the defeat, and for successors to position themselves for what happens after Labour wins in a landslide,” said Matthew Goodwin, a political scientist at the University of Kent who has advised the Conservative Party.

Tim Bale, a professor of politics at Queen Mary University of London and an expert on the Tories, said, “He does look, to be honest, like a dead man walking.”

Defenders of Mr. Sunak say he is a victim of global economic headwinds coming out of the coronavirus pandemic, as well as the poisoned legacy he inherited from Ms. Truss, whose sweeping tax cut plan spooked the financial markets and tarnished Britain’s reputation for fiscal probity.

Britain’s persistent inflation, high mortgage rates and a stagnant economy all predated Mr. Sunak. The inflation rate has dropped to 3.2 percent from 11.1 percent when he took office, though credit for that goes principally to the Bank of England.

Mr. Sunak did win praise for steadying the markets and restoring Britain’s credibility after Ms. Truss. But critics said he never followed that up with a convincing strategy to recharge growth. Nor did he fulfill two other promises: to cut waiting times in the National Health Service and to stop the small boats carrying asylum seekers across the English Channel.

“Liz Truss cratered the party’s reputation for economic competence,” Professor Bale said. “But it’s also down to Sunak: He hasn’t got the grip, charisma or authority that someone doing the rescue job required would have needed.”

Part of that, critics said, reflects Mr. Sunak’s political shortcomings. He can be querulous in media interviews, and his attempts to connect with voters are often tin eared. He drew japes after posing in a pair of Adidas Sambas , an athletic shoe favored by celebrities like Rihanna and Harry Styles, while promoting his tax policies. “Sunak took an eternally cool sneaker, and ruined it for everyone,” said British GQ magazine.

Some say that Mr. Sunak, a onetime Goldman Sachs banker whose wife, Akshata Murthy, is the daughter of an Indian technology billionaire, is simply not a relatable figure. Before he was mocked for wearing Sambas, he caught flack for wearing £490 ($616) Prada suede loafers to a construction site.

The Labour Party leader, Keir Starmer, has taken aim at Mr. Sunak’s preference for flying across Britain to taking the train. “I’m sure from the vantage point of his helicopter everything might look fine,” Mr. Starmer said in Parliament, “but that’s not the lived experience of those on the ground.”

Mr. Sunak once posed with a “smart mug” for coffee, which retails for £180, on his desk — an image that stuck in the minds of those critiquing his milk-pouring video. “If anyone can afford a £900 cup of tea, it’s the prime minister,” the journalist Robert Hutton wrote on social media.

Others noted that Mr. Sunak’s claim that workers would save £900 in lower national insurance payments was misleading , because the government had frozen income tax thresholds. With inflation-adjusted wages, people are paying higher taxes without taking home extra money.

Mr. Sunak did not spend much time in the political trenches before becoming prime minister. He entered Parliament in 2015 and rose in just five years to be chancellor of the Exchequer under Prime Minister Boris Johnson. After helping precipitate Mr. Johnson’s fall, he was beaten in his first leadership contest by Ms. Truss.

However bumpy his tenure, Mr. Sunak insists that his government has made headway on the economy, immigration and defense, with a pledge to increase Britain’s military spending to 2.5 percent of economic output by 2030.

Writing in The Daily Telegraph on Saturday, Mr. Sunak drew a sharp distinction between the Tories and Labour. Voters, he said, would have a choice between “a plan versus no plan, bold principled action versus U-turns and prevarication, a clear record of delivery versus political game playing.”

Nowhere has Mr. Sunak invested more political capital than on immigration. He won passage of a divisive law that would put asylum seekers on one-way flights to Rwanda , and now vows to put planes in the air by July, before the election.

The Rwanda policy, which involves permanently deporting asylum seekers without hearing their claims for asylum, is anathema to rights activists, constitutional lawyers and the courts. But it is popular with rank-and-file Conservatives — calculated to win over the same voters in the Midlands and Northern England who turned against the Tories in the local elections.

Traditionally, these areas had been Labour strongholds, earning the nickname “red wall” after the party’s campaign color. But they swung to the Tories in 2019 because of Mr. Johnson’s promise to “Get Brexit Done.” Now, the coalition he cobbled together appears to be fracturing; the red wall is swinging back to Labour.

Consider Blackpool South, a seaside district in the north, where Labour won a Tory-held seat in a special election on Thursday. In 2016, the wider Blackpool region had voted in favor of Brexit by 67.5 percent.

Professor Goodwin faulted the Conservatives for not moving more aggressively to cut immigration. These results, he said, “underline just how much they’ve lost touch with the post-Brexit political realignment.”

To other analysts, however, Mr. Sunak’s struggles are evidence that this realignment was always something of a mirage. In the Conservative Party’s heartland in the south — known as the “blue wall” — voters want low taxes and stable government. Some are turned off by the anti-immigrant tone of the Rwanda policy.

These more free-market, socially liberal priorities are often at odds with what many voters in the Midlands and the North want. And that has confronted Mr. Sunak with a dilemma, the political equivalent of squaring the circle.

“He’s being asked to pursue two different strategies at the same time,” said Robert Hayward, a Conservative member of the House of Lords and polling expert. “Dealing with the blue wall on one side and the red wall on the other. And it’s not easy to identify a common strategy that will tackle both of them.”

Stephen Castle contributed reporting.
