We visited Cairo and Alexandria on a private tour. The staff were very nice to us and we got to learn a lot about ancient Egypt. We had nice conversations with the tour guide and our journey was quite pleasant. The accommodation and food can be improved. The hotel we stayed in didn't have WiFi in the room and breakfast was bland. We also didn't get introduced to local Egyptian food and the choice of restaurants was not optimal (in terms of dining environment, value to money, taste). But these are not major issues to us, just some area for improvements. Overall the experience is good, especially with the price we are paying. I would recommend the tour to others.

Alexandria may be the second-biggest city in Egypt today, but that’s the least of its claims to fame.

The namesake city of Alexander the Great, the capital of Ptolemaic Egypt, the once largest city in the world, the battleground of Cleopatra and the Romans, the home of two ancient wonders of the world and a leading center of learning… those are just a few things that make Alexandria a city worth visiting. And we haven’t even gotten started on its modern history!

Alexandria today is a faded version of what was once called ‘the jewel of the Mediterranean’, and the modern city sometimes imposes on its old dated beauty, but it’s still a quirky mix of old and new/beautiful and ugly that’s worth seeing and learning about.

Here are some things you should definitely see and do while in Alexandria:

1. Citadel of Qaitbey

This medieval Islamic fort has stood sentry on the western coast of Alexandria since 1480, built by the Mamluk sultan Qaitbey to protect the Mediterranean port.

But before this spot of Alexandrian real estate was associated with the citadel, it housed something even more famous -- the world-renowned Lighthouse of Alexandria, Pharos, one of the seven ancient wonders of the world. The lighthouse was destroyed by an earthquake in 1303 and Qaitbey used its rubble 150 years later to build the citadel.

2. Bibliotheca Alexandrina

Speaking of ancient wonders of the world, Alexandria used to be home to two of the seven (Egypt as a whole had three of the seven, and the Great Pyramid of Giza is the only ancient wonder to still exist). Besides Pharos the lighthouse, the ancient Library of Alexandria was another marvel that put the Mediterranean city on the map.

The Great Library was destroyed during the Roman conquest of Egypt, but in 2002 the modern Bibliotheca Alexandrina was built as a nod to the ancient library and to recapture the spirit of knowledge and learning.

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina has a main library, six specialized libraries, four museums, permanent and temporary exhibitions, a planetarium, an exploratorium, twelve academic research centers and four art galleries.

3. Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa

These catacombs are a rare mix of Egyptian, Greek and Roman architecture and monuments and are considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages.

Dating back to the 2nd century AD, these catacombs are three subterranean levels made out of rock (the deepest level is now totally submerged in water). It was discovered in 1900 when a donkey accidentally fell through the access shaft at ground level (a great discovery, but poor donkey).

The second level of the catacombs is described as “eerily alive” due to all the sculptures there. It’s believed that it was originally intended as a tomb for a single family, but bones of other individuals and horses were also found there.

4. Pompey’s Pillar and Serapeum

First off: the name is kind of a lie. The ancient column, built in ~300 AD, actually had nothing to do with Pompey, who was a Roman general and Julius Caesar’s rival. It was built in honor of the Roman emperor Diocletian, who provided food for the starving city when Alexandria was under siege.

The Serapeum, which today is just ruins except for the pillar, used to be Alexandria’s acropolis dedicated to Serapis, Alexandria’s patron god. Legend has it that when Christianity gained strength in Alexandria, they destroyed the Serapeum and other symbols of paganism, around 400 AD.

There are also the remains of underground storerooms where they used to keep extra texts and manuscripts from the Great Library of Alexandria.

5. Abu Al Abbas Al Mursi Mosque

Or as the locals call it, Mursi Abu Al Abbas. This mosque was built over the tomb of the Andalusian Islamic scholar and sheikh, Abu El Abbas Al Mursi. He left his home country of Spain in 1242 for Tunisia, before moving to Alexandria, where he spent 43 years up until his death.

In 1307, the then-ruler El Sheikh Zein El Deen built a mausoleum, dome and a small mosque over the tomb. It became a popular pilgrimage spot for Muslims passing through Alexandria on their way to and from Mecca.

The present, much larger mosque that stands today was built in 1775 by Algerian sheikh Abu Hassan el Maghreby. It was renovated and ‘beautified’ multiple times since then, and remains to date Alexandria’s largest mosque.

6. Montazah Park

Montazah Palace Complex and its royal gardens are situated on the Mediterranean Sea on the eastern side of Alexandria. The former summer palace and residence of the Egyptian monarchy, the Salamlik palace was first built as a hunting lodge in 1892 by Khedive Abbas II, then its sister palace Haramlik was added in 1932 by King Fuad.

The palaces now aren’t open to the public, but you can explore the gardens, enjoy the sea views and eat at the restaurants and cafes in the park. There’s also a little island accessible by bridge.

7. Royal Jewelry Museum

Speaking of former palaces, the Royal Jewelry Museum lives in the former palace of Princess Fatma El Zahraa in the Alex neighborhood of Zizenia, built in 1919-1923.

The palace is an architectural gem in and of itself, and the royal jewelry collection houses more than 11,000 pieces, some dating back to the rule of Mohammed Ali Pasha, who became Khedive of Egypt in 1805.

Besides jewelry, the museum also has on display centuries-old coins, golden clocks, watches, portraits of the royal family in golden frames, dazzling crowns and King Farouk’s walking stick in ebony and gold.

8. Roman Amphitheatre (Kom el Dikka)

Discovered by coincidence in 1960 when workers were removing rubble to build a governmental building, the Roman Amphitheatre dates back to the 4th century AD and was used not only in the Roman era for performances, but the Byzantine and early Islamic eras as well, for public assemblies and summits.

To the north of the amphitheatre are the ruins of Roman baths dating back to the 2nd-4th century AD, and to the east are the remains of a 2nd century AD Roman villa, known as the Villa of the Birds due to its mosaic floor depicting birds. Both the baths and the villa are worth seeing when visiting the amphitheatre.

9. Alexandria National Museum

If you’re a bit fuzzy about Alexandria’s history (no shame -- it’s confusing even to us locals), the National Museum will help sort you out. The museum itself from an architectural standpoint isn’t that impressive, but don’t judge a book by its cover -- its contents definitely make up for what its facade lacks.

Its exhibits are divided chronologically into eras to help you flesh things out a bit: pharaonic, Greek, Roman, Christian, Islamic and modern. There’s also a section for underwater monuments (some monuments still exist till present day in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Alex!).

10. Walk down the Corniche

The heart of Alexandria is truly in its Corniche, the coastal road that hugs the Mediterranean Sea on one side and the city on the other. It’s by walking down the Corniche and seeing the fishing boats bobbing on the water that you can really imagine what the ancient city was like in its heyday over 2,000 years ago.

It’s also a great place to people-watch: you’ll see street vendors peddling all kinds of random stuff, parents pushing babies in their strollers, couples walking hand-in-hand, fishermen, and teenagers doing… well whatever it is that teenagers do.

11. Explore Fouad Street

While we’re on the topic of walking, make sure you take a stroll down Alexandria’s historic Fouad Street. Although you’ll find it under ‘El Horeya Road’ on Google Maps (Fouad Street’s new name after the 1952 revolution), locals still refer to it as Fouad Street, named after the former Egyptian king.

Fouad Street is a dated piece of Alexandria’s belle epoque, when the city was comprised of harmonious Egyptian, Italian, Greek, French, Armenian, Muslim, Christian and Jewish communities. The architecture, art, shops and even food were a unique melting pot of all the diverse communities, all of whom were Alexandrian first and foremost.

12. Try Alexandria’s famous patisseries

Alexandria is known throughout the country for its cafe and patisserie culture, with some of their beloved dessert shops dating back over 100 years, like Trianon near El Raml Station. Or Délices, which is still owned by the same Greek family since 1922.

13. Ride the tram

If you want to feel like a real local, hop on the Alexandrian tram, which has been in operation since 1860. It was the first collective means of transport not only in Egypt, but the whole of Africa. It’s one of the oldest tram systems in the world.

Today they’re a cheap and safe (if not particularly speedy) way of seeing the city and they’re one of the few trams in the world that uses double-deck cars. Similar to the metro in Cairo, they have women-only cars for any solo women who feel more comfortable in an all-women environment.

14. Have a drink at the Windsor Palace rooftop

The Windsor Palace Hotel, now Paradise Inn Windsor Palace, was established in 1906 and was in quite the enviable location back 100 years ago -- it was close to the Raml train station and Alexandria’s old port harbor, as well as the shopping district and seaside promenades.

The current hotel that stands today has seen much better days, but holds on to a timeless claim to fame -- the view from their rooftop restaurant and terrace, called Blue Harbor.

Local tip: if their 7th floor Sky Roof is in 'club mode' with obnoxious lighting and music, just stick to their restaurant terrace on the 6th floor -- equally good view.

15. Enjoy Alexandria's fresh Mediterranean seafood.

Seeing as you're in a seaside city, it only makes sense to indulge in the fresh seafood that Alexandria is known for. The Bibliotheca Alexandrina is one of Egypt's most important contemporary landmarks and the cultural heart of the city.

Its architecture is centered around a giant sun disk, which presides over the waterfront Corniche. Inside, the huge main library and its reading room can hold eight million volumes.

Downtown Alexandria's wide, waterfront Corniche Road is as much a symbol of the city as any of its monuments.

Strolling the Corniche, particularly the section between the main shorefront square of Midan Saad Zaghloul to Fort Qaitbey on the Eastern Harbor's western tip, gives you a real feel for the era of cosmopolitan elegance and decadence that marked this city in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Much of the architecture from this era still stands along the Corniche, though these days, much of it is heavily dilapidated and falling into disrepair.

During your stroll, the most famous landmarks along this stretch include the multiple-domed Abu Abbas al-Mursi Mosque and the still-standing heritage hotels, the Steigenberger Cecil Hotel and Paradise Inn Windsor Palace Hotel .

These were once the grandest addresses in town, and both are featured in Lawrence Durrell's classic Alexandria Quartet novels that are set in the city.

The Cecil, in its hey-day, is also famous for playing host to mystery author Agatha Christie, the British Secret Service and Winston Churchill during WWII, and Egypt's beloved singer Umm Khalthoum.

The Catacombs of Kom el-Shuqqafa are hewn from the rock on the southern slopes of a hill, in the Carmous district .

Thought to date from the 2nd century CE, they offer an admirable example of the characteristic Alexandrian fusion of Egyptian and Greco-Roman styles.

Discovered in 1900 (thanks to a donkey falling into them) they are laid out on several levels of sarcophagi and loculi (shelf tomb) chambers.

A spiral staircase leads down into the ground to the main rotunda.

To the right, you can enter the main burial chamber and also the Sepulchral Chapel with 91 loculi , each large enough to accommodate three or four mummies.

To the left is a large room known as the Triclinium Funebre, which would have been used for banquets in honor of the dead.

Walk the long shorefront Corniche road of the Eastern Harbor heading west, and you'll finally arrive at Fort Qaitbey.

It may be a poor substitute for what was once the site of the mighty Pharos Lighthouse –one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, which was toppled by a violent earthquake in 1303–but this squat fort has been standing guard over Alexandria since 1480.

Fort Qaitbey was built by Mamluke Sultan Qaitbey in an effort to fortify this important Egyptian port from attack, and rubble from the toppled lighthouse was used in its construction.

Inside, you can explore the series of stone-walled chambers and climb up to the roof to look out over the Mediterranean.

Nobody thought much of the ancient rubble mound in central Alexandria until, in the 1960s, they decided to clear the site to make way for new housing.

As work commenced, the area known as Kom el-Dikka ("Mound of Rubble") revealed a whole swag of ancient ruins buried beneath, including a small Roman theater.

Today the area is a small archaeological park with remains from Alexandria's Greco-Roman period.

As well as the theater, there are remnants of a Ptolemaic temple, a Roman bathhouse, and various Roman-era villas.

Excavation work on the Villa of the Birds here unearthed well-preserved 3rd-century mosaic floors, which have been kept in situ.

In Carmous, near the Catacombs of Kom el-Shuqqafa, is a hill littered with the remains of ancient walls, architectural fragments, and rubble on which Alexandria's only fully intact ancient monument is left standing.

Pompey's Pillar rises from the ruins of the ancient and famous Serapeion ( Temple of Serapis ), which was once used to store the overflow of manuscripts from the Great Library of Alexandria.

This column of red Aswan granite with a Corinthian capital, rising to a height of almost 27 meters, actually has nothing to do with Pompey and was instead set up in 292 CE in honor of Diocletian, who supplied food for the starving population after the siege of the city.

Underneath, there is not much to see of the badly ruined Serapeion, but you can clamber down some staircases into a substructure of chambers.

Alexandria's National Museum is a must-stop if you want to get to grips with the vast history of this famed city.

Inside, the collection guides you from the Pharaonic era (in the basement), to the Hellenistic heyday, when Alexandria and Egypt were governed by the Ptolemy dynasty begun by Alexander the Great (on the ground floor), and up to the Byzantine and Islamic periods (on the 1st floor).

The ground floor's exhibits of statuary and artifacts from the underwater archaeological explorations of the sunken port city of Heracleion-Thonis in Aboukir Bay are the museum's major highlight.

The museum does a fantastic job of bringing ancient Alexandria to life, including excellent map drawing exhibits that imagine what the classical city would have looked like, helping visitors understand the changing face of this city.

An oasis of calm on the city's eastern edge, Montazah is a lush haven of tall palm trees, trimmed lawns, and blossoming flowers that was once off-limits to all but the royal court and their hangers-on.

Built as a hunting lodge in the 1890s by Khedive Abbas Hilmi, it was later extended substantially by King Fuad and replaced Ras el-Tin Palace as the royal family's summer house.

The eccentrically designed Montazah Palace , with its ornate Florentine-inspired towers and Rococo flourishes, is not open to the public, but everyone is welcome to stroll within the sprawling gardens, which can be a welcome slice of nature after a day spent within Alexandria's hustle.

On the coastal end of the park is a small beach with a peculiarly whimsical bridge to a small island.

If you need a dose of tranquility, a trip to Montazah is just the ticket to restore your sanity before diving back into the inner city fray.

Minibuses heading west up the shore-front Corniche road all pass by Montazah. They charge between 1-2 EGP depending on where you board.

Many visitors come to Alexandria primely to dine on the city's fresh seafood.

The two best areas for restaurants serving fresh fish are the harborfront, where you get sea views with your meal, and the working-class district of Anfushi, which stretches west from Fort Qaitbey and the harbor in a warren of lanes.

Just after sunset, Anfushi is the city's liveliest area, with traditional coffeehouses spilling out onto the street, and the scent of sheesha (water-pipes) and grilled fish hanging in the air.

It's worthwhile exploring Anfushi beyond its restaurant scene. On Qasr Ras el-Tin Street are the city's shipyards , while farther along the street is the bustling Alexandria fish market, which is prime territory for photographers in the mornings, when the haggling is at full throttle.

Sumptuous Ras el-Tin Palace was once a summer escape for Egypt's sultans when the desert heat of Cairo got too much to bear.

It's also the famed location where King Farouk–Egypt's last king–officially abdicated in 1952 before sailing out of Alexandria's harbor and into exile in Italy.

Today, the palace is used by the Egyptian navy, which means its glorious interiors are out of bounds to casual visitors, but the monumental white façade, best viewed from the harbor waters, is a must-see.

Alexandria's main souq (market) stretches through the back streets, heading west from Midan Tahrir in the central city.

You'll find everything from fresh produce to silver trinkets by poking about in this district.

To be fair, there isn't much on sale to interest tourists; this is a real-deal local souq, and it's a place to visit more to capture an essence of Alexandrian life than to shop.

The entire souq area is a squiggle of lanes that flow off from each other, with each alley specializing in different products.

One of Alexandria's major landmarks, the Abu Abbas al-Mursi Mosque was built in 1796 over the tomb of the 13th-century Sufi holy man Abu Abbas al-Mursi.

Originally from Murcia (in Spain's Andalusia region), Abu Abbas became a highly esteemed religious leader in Alexandria, and his teachings are still revered in Egypt.

The mammoth cream-colored mosque that holds his name is a major pilgrimage site.

For non-religious visitors, the mosque's exquisite facade of swirling Islamic calligraphy designs and motifs is the major draw-card.

Those who want to enter to see the beautiful and intricate mosaic halls should dress modestly and leave their shoes at the main entrance.

The hardscrabble township of El Alamein, about 112 kilometers west of Alexandria, holds a fascinating place in modern world history.

It was across this parched piece of nondescript desert that the Allies' first decisive victory in World War II's North Africa campaign was won.

The bloody battles that took place here in October 1942 killed or wounded more than 80,000 soldiers from countries as varied as Australia, New Zealand, India, and Great Britain (Allies), as well as Germany and Italy (Axis Forces).

Today, the war memorials that stand are a poignant reminder of the 13 days of fighting that claimed so many lives.

The rather excellent El Alamein War Museum does a good job of giving an overview to the El Alamein campaign, with plenty of military memorabilia displayed.

The Commonwealth Cemetery is a beautifully kept tribute to the fallen, with the 7,000 tombstones in regimented rows between well-tended desert plants.

Just north of town, along the coastal highway, is the boxy German Memorial , where most of the 4,500 German dead are buried, and another couple of kilometers north is the Italian Memorial that is also home to a tiny, but interesting, museum.

This museum, just north of Stanley Bridge, is easily reached from central Alexandria by tram.

It is set in the palace that was once home to Fatma Al-Zahraa Haider, a descendent of Muhammad Ali Pasha–the first viceroy (pasha) of Egypt under Ottoman rule who went on to establish Egypt's royal family dynasty that ruled up to independence in 1952.

The palace itself, built in 1923, is an excellent example of the merging architectural styles of Islamic and European design.

The ornate plasterwork ceilings, gilded and frescoed, of some rooms are enough of a reason to visit, but the interiors are also home to a collection of jewelry, household items and art work once owned by various members of the Muhammad Ali Pasha dynasty.

Any visitor interested in Egypt's art scene should make sure to beeline to this Italianate villa, once home to Egyptian artist Mahmoud Said, which is now an art gallery devoted to his work.

Considered by many as the founder of Egyptian modern art, Mahmoud Said's work may be European in style but is infused with a distinct Egyptian identity.

The collection of his work, displayed within the rooms here, ranges from throughout his painting career and covers landscapes to nudes.

The museum is only a one-kilometer walk north from the Royal Jewelry Museum , so the two are easily combined together.

Presiding over a promontory, defended on all sides by old forts, the little fishing village of Aboukir , about 24 kilometers northeast of Alexandria, has an illustrious history that defies its small size.

This is where, on August 1st, 1798, the Battle of the Nile was fought, in which Nelson inflicted an annihilating defeat on the French fleet.

Here, too, in 1799, Napoleon defeated a numerically superior Turkish force; and here also, in 1801, Sir Ralph Abercromby defeated the remnants of the French army and compelled them to evacuate Egypt.

For naval history buffs, this military past of battles is enough of a reason to visit, but for the average sightseer, the main reason for a journey here is to sample some of Egypt's finest seafood .

Aboukir bay is home to a host of fabulous fish restaurants that locals flock to in the summer months. Stuffing yourself full of seafood while sunset sears over the Mediterranean is the perfect end to an Alexandrian day.

One of Alexandria's most famous sons, Constantine Cavafy (1863-1933), was a Greek Alexandrian poet who found fame and recognition for his writing after his death.

His apartment, on what is now Sharm el-Sheikh Street, is a tribute to his life and a major attraction for anyone on an Alexandrian literary pilgrimage.

Cavafy spent his working life as a journalist and civil servant, little recognized for his poetry outside of a small group of Alexandrian-based writers (including English novelist E.M. Forster, who was a champion of Cavafy's work).

His poetry, though, richly captures the vast history of Alexandria–particularly its Hellenistic origins–and he has become one of the greatly celebrated literary figures of the city.

The small museum contains many of his manuscripts and correspondence.

Alexandria is considered the cradle of culture and the land of history. Its sand is covered in antiquities and the footsteps of heroes, and its sea inhabited by sunken treasures. As for its air, its breezes are fragrant with the fragrance of “Cleopatra” and her lover “Antonio,” and before them the breath of Alexander the Great, its creator.  

Alexander the Great founded the city of Alexandria on January 21, 331 BC as a Greek city. It became the largest city in the Mediterranean. It is located on the sea above a coastal strip northwest of the Nile Delta. It was planned by the Greek engineer (Dinocrates) to be located next to an ancient village for fishermen that was called (Rakoda).  

And soon it gained its fame after it became a cultural, political and economic center, especially when it was the capital of the Ptolemaic rule in Egypt. Alexandria was characterized at the beginning by the military character as a city for the Greek soldiers. Then the days of the Greek Ptolemaic turned into a royal city with its gardens, white marble columns and wide streets.

Alexandria remained the capital of Egypt during the reigns of the Greeks, Romans and Byzantines until the Arabs entered it. And the capital moved from it to the city of Fustat, which was founded by Amr ibn al-Aas in the year 21 AH-641 AD.

The library of Alexandria consists of millions of books, in addition to other six libraries, including the Children's Library, which contains rare books. The library offers an unparalleled family experience in the interactive exhibition such as the chorama, which extends on a giant 180-degree screen and displays historical stories from both ancient and modern Egyptian histories.

The Roman Theatre

The Ancient Roman theatre is one of the most important Egyptian discoveries of the 20th century. This building was discovered by chance, during the search for the tomb of Alexander the Great by the Polish expedition in 1960, and upon discovering its marble steps, archaeologists called it the "Roman Theatre".

Since then, the theater has always sparked controversy over the nature of its use, especially after the discovery of some study halls next to it in 2004, which indicates that it was probably used as a large lecture hall for students, in addition to its use as a theater during celebrations.

The Citadel of Qaitbay

This Citadel is one of the oldest Islamic monuments and the most important tourist attractions in Alexandria, which receives large numbers of tourists throughout the year. This castle was built by Sultan “Ashraf Seif al-Din Qaytbay” on the Mediterranean coast in the same place as the old minaret, which was destroyed during an ancient strong earthquake.

The castle was built with high walls, about 4 meters high and about 2 meters wide. It took two whole years to build it, and some destruction occurred in the castle when the British occupation entered Egypt, but the Committee for the Conservation of Arab Antiquities restored it in 1904.

The Gardens of Montazah Palace

At the Montazah Palace you will be greeted by shrubs and flowers, the palace was built by the last Khedive of Egypt and Sudan, Khedive Abbas II in 1892. You can take the most beautiful pictures from the outer walls, which embody a mixture of Ottoman Turkish architecture and Florentine Italian design.

Serapeum and Pompey's Pillar

The Serapeum and Pompey's Pillar is one of the most important monolithic columns that saw the light throughout history. The pillar dates back to the Roman era in memory of Emperor “Docletian”, who saved the people of Alexandria from the revolution set up by the leader “Achilles”, so they built this column as a thank you to the emperor who restored stability and peace to the city.

The Alexandrian liver is one of the famous dishes preferred by many Egyptians and residents of the Arab world. It is one of the dishes that characterize the city of Alexandria, and there are a lot of restaurants dedicated to it, so don’t miss a chance to try it with a little bit of lemon and hot pepper.

Grilled Fish

Because Alexandria is a coastal city overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, It’s pretty much destined for it to be famous for its seafood. One of the most popular dishes in the city of Alexandria is grilled fish of various kinds, there are grilled tilapia fish, grilled mullet fish and it won’t be completed without Sayadiyah rice, and tahini salad.

Gandofli and Om-elkhulul (Arca noae)

Gandofli and Om-elkhulul are kinds of seafood, and they are very famous in the city of Alexandria. Gandofli is cooked by boiling it with hot pepper, and onion slices, On the other hand, Om-elkhulul are treated as snacks, so don’t be alarmed if you saw some people eating it from a paper bag in the street.

Molokhia with Shrimp

I’m Sure That you have heard of Molokhia before, but combining it with shrimps is not known anywhere else besides Alexandria, and it is considered one of the authentic Alexandrian heritage. It is a molokhia that is cooked on a soup of peeled shrimp, fried with garlic, and served with white rice.

Alexandrian sausage

The Alexandrian sausage is considered to have a distinctive taste. It is called Alexandrian (seduk), and it is cooked with pepper, onion, garlic, and hot pepper, which you might have realized now that no Alexandrian food is free from.

Alexandrian Hawawshi

It is made from dough, minced meat, or stuffed with sausage, and placed in the oven until fully cooked. Alexandrian hawawshi is also considered one of the dishes that is distinguished by its delicious and unique taste.

Al Qadisiyah

It is one of the most famous desert dishes in Alexandria. It is a dough that is cooked with steam, and milk, then the place ghee and sugar on top of it.

Fresca is also one of the rare sweets that Alexandria is famous for. It is a light biscuit stuffed with nuts, covered with honey, and it is widely sold in most of Alexandria's beaches.

One Day Trip to Alexandria from Cairo: Things to Do on a Self-Guided Trip

Thinking of taking a one day trip to Alexandria from Cairo , Egypt? Good idea. When deciding whether or not to go to Alexandria, we got mixed reviews at first. Some said not to go, and some said it was worth more than a weekend. So we decided to meet in the middle and spend one day in Alexandria Egypt – a very full one, at that.

We were lucky enough to have a local show us around the city on a jam-packed big day exploring everything Alexandria has to offer, from museums to historical sites to seafood (Thanks, Mina!). So the things to do below are from a local’s (and our) perspective! Check out my video below for a quick video travel guide.

Getting to Alexandria from Cairo

You can take a day trip to Alexandria from Cairo by bus, car, minivan, or train. The busses are sometimes faster, but we really enjoy the train experience (and the seats are bigger/comfier, too)! View your options and book online here – it’s easier booking online than in person in many cases!

Taking the Bus to Alexandria from Cairo

You can grab a bus from the Cairo Gateway bus station (West & Mid Delta or Superjet lines) in downtown Cairo, not too far from the train station, or the GoBus station near the Egyptian museum. The buses are pretty comfortable and should take about 3.5 hours depending on traffic at the time.

The bus station is a bit farther from town so you will need to negotiate a taxi or call an uber to get to the bus station.

If you plan on staying later in Alexandria, you might want to plan a bus ride back to Cairo afterward as the busses depart much later into the night than the trains.

Taking the Train to Alexandria from Cairo

I would recommend taking the train from Cairo to Alexandria simply for the experience. The trains in Egypt are surprisingly comfortable and even serve food. You can take a train from the Ramses train station, which will arrive to Alexandria’s Misr train station quite close to downtown.

Trains say they will take 2 hours, but the reality is that they’ll take at least 3.5 or 4 due to random stops and slowness that no one can explain. I mean, this is Egypt after all! The last trains go back to Cairo around 8:30 or 9pm.

an organized tour. But if you read this post and think you can’t be bothered, you can also book a day tour with a guide from $70 per person. You won’y see ALL of these things (in fact just a couple) but it will be hassle-free.

What to Bring on Your One Day Trip to Alexandria from Cairo

If you are arriving in the early morning and leaving late at night, you will at least need to bring a backpack with basic items for a day out – sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, comfortable walking shoes (important), a camera, and comfy clothes.

Depending on the time of year, you will want to have a swimsuit in case you want to take a dip in the sea (and a change of clothes if so), and possibly some warmer layers for after dark (Alexandria gets COLD in the winter).

You will need to have cash for entrance fees to historical sites, and something to cover your skin if you wish to enter any churches or mosques.

Things to Do in Alexandria in 1 Day: Attractions + Activites

Below are the best things to do on a jam-packed one-day trip to Alexandria from Cairo. It may seem like a lot, but you can do it! With a good pace and an adventurous spirit, you can accomplish most of the main sights in Alexandria today… but you WILL be tired (and will need to take a taxi sometimes)!

Royal Jewelry Museum

At first glance, the Royal Jewelry Museum might sound quite boring (at least it did for me anyway). But it is honestly worth a visit if you can conveniently visit the area (it’s a bit down the coast from downtown).

This museum is an old estate of the Egyptian Royal family, started in the early 1800s by Mohammad Ali Pasha. It’s full of absolutely incredible the jewels and gems that this family possessed – from diamond jewelry to precious jewel-encrusted items from chess sets to toiletry boxes.

It’s incredible to see the glimmer of the diamonds as you walk through the rooms of this Victorian estate, which also has incredible furnishings and touches as well.

Walk the Corniche

The ‘corniche’ anywhere in Egypt is the boardwalk along the water, and Alexandria has one of the longest corniches in the country. This walkable beachside path stretches from the Citadel ALL the way along Alexandria’s waterfront – over 15 kilometers!

It’s lovely to stroll along the Alexandria Corniche at any time of day. But if you are only there for a day trip, try taking the scenic walk along the corniche while walking in between Alexandria attractions.

Citadel of Quaitbay (on the Alexandria Lighthouse Site)

The Citadel of Quaitbay is one the most important military strongholds of the Mediterranean sea, built in the late 1400s and renovated in the 1800s. You can enter the citadel and climb up to see to a lot of the vantage points and cannons.

But the coolest part about the Citadel of Quaitbay is that it was built on the site of the ancient Alexandria Lighthouse – which is one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. They say that traces of the lighthouse are still able to be found deep underwater by scuba divers.

Serapeum and Pompey’s Pillar

Located a bit more inland from the coast, the Serapeum and Pompey’s Pillar are remains of an Ancient Greek acropolis and catacombs that used to occupy the area. The pillar is said to have supported a statue of the Roman Emperor Diocletian (290’s AD), but the original structure and catacombs are from a few hundred years earlier during the rule of the Greeks.

The catacombs are said to have contained a special storage of scrolls and information from the Library of Alexandria. You will see the spaces in the walls where they were placed!

Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa

The catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa are one of the most fascinating sites in Egypt because of the incredible mixture between Egyptian, Greek, and Roman figures and styles.

These catacombs held dozens of tombs, and the main tombs are adorned with carvings and hieroglyphs on the walls that have a uniquely blended style you can’t find anywhere else in Egypt.

Let me explain. You can see figures with the head of Egyptian gods (such as Anubis), Roman clothing/skirt, and the body of a snake… covered by Greek-style columns. You must walk down a huge spiral staircase to enter these tombs, and you can see the slots of the walls where dozens of people were buried. Creeeepy, but cool!

Alexandria Library “Bibliotheca Alexandrina”

It’s common knowledge that the ancient library of Alexandria is long gone – and with it, a lot of ancient knowledge was lost. But, it’s still cool to visit the site of this ancient wonder, and the incredible new library that now occupies the space.

The New ‘Bibliotheca Alexandrina’ is an architectural marvel, with picturesque open spaces and modern design. There’s also a planetarium on the site too! Check the Bibliotheca Alexandrina website for a current schedule – there’s always a lot going on.

Kom el Dikka Ancient Roman Theatre

You can actually find an amazingly well-preserved Ancient Roman theatre right next to the train station in Alexandria. It’s a very small one, but it’s worth checking out. As you only have one day in Alexandria, you might want to see it from the street if you are trying to save some money on entrance fees and time.

Cathedral of St Mark

Tucked inside downtown Alexandria, you can find the Cathedral of St Mark. This is the oldest Christian church in Alexandria and one of the oldest in the country (but not quite as old as the Hanging Church in Cairo).

As Alexandria was an important historic center for Christianity, this is a very important church and the seat of the pope of Alexandria. You can enter this church and walk around the beautiful old pews, and if you’re lucky you may be shown into the back where they say they have a piece of the palm of St Mark himself… which is equal parts fascinating and creepy.

Sidi Morsi Abo Al Abass Mosque

Don’t worry about trying to pronounce this one; it’s the main mosque near downtown Alexandria that you truly can’t miss. It’s a beautiful and ornate mosque with multiple domes and buildings that are as intricate on the inside as they are out.

Currently they only open the main mosque for men, but soon they might open it for females again (apparently they closed it for females due to c*vid, whatever that means).

Explore Downtown

Downtown Alexandria is full of surprises. You can find tucked-away cafes, restaurants everywhere, and also tons of shops from electronics to souvenirs to clothing.

It’s fun to get lost in the hustle and bustle of the downtown area, wander into a few shops, and really feel the Alexandria city vibe (which you can compare to the beach later)!

Explore the Souk District

The Souk District is visible on Google Maps and is home to streets and alleys of different kinds of shops. The souk district is organized into sections based on different items.

The ‘womens’ alley’ is a street selling material, lingerie, and dresses that used to be limited to women. You can find an electronics area, a kids’ market, a jewelry section, some more standard souvenirs, and more.

Try some Street Food After

In the souk district, you will find lots of vendors selling different kinds of street food. On your way around, don’t pass up grabbing some interesting snacks like freshly baked sweet potatoes, corn, and even PALM TREE to snack on. Yes, we tried sliced palm tree, and it tasted like healthy chips!

Watch the Sunset

Watching the sunset is a MUST in Alexandria, and the best places to watch it are from the corniche near the Alexandria Library, or near the Citadel of Quaitbay. There’s nothing better than a sunset over the sea, and Alexandria serves up lovely Mediterranean sea sunsets on a daily basis.

TRY SEAFOOD!

Alexandria unsurprisingly has some of the BEST seafood. The seafood here comes straight from the sea to the restaurants, where you can select your fish, squids, prawns, mussels, etc right as they arrive.

We went to a restaurant called Samakmak which was honestly our favorite meal in Egypt and maybe one of the best seafood meals I have EVER had. We picked out our fish right from an ice bed outside the restaurant and got 4 different dishes, each more delicious than the last. My tastebuds were doing dances all evening long. We got butter prawns, a fajita calamari, garlic fish, and more.

Visit the Beach

Alexandria is a popular beach destination for Egyptians throughout the summer, and still has good beach weather through about November. One of the BEST things to do in Alexandria is to relax on the beach!

The beaches on the north side are better for swimming, but if you just want to hang out along the water, there are some beaches right month corniche near the main mosque where you can catch a sea breeze and a great view.

Gleem Bay is a cool thing to do to wrap in your one day trip to Alexandria from Cairo. It’s essentially a long and skinny mall built onto a jetty in the ocean. It’s lit up in bright lights and is home to tons of restaurants, dessert bars, ice cream, bars, and places to sit and relax and enjoy an evening with the food of your choice.

It’s the busiest after dark, so it could be a great place to wrap up your day in Alexandria before heading back to the train or bus.
