GHOST is continuing to tour in support of its fifth album, "Impera" , which sold 70,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. in its first week of release to land at position No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart. It marked the third top 10 album — and fifth top 40-charting set — for the Swedish act.

"Impera" landed at position No. 1 in Germany and Sweden, No. 2 in the U.K., Netherlands, Belgium and Norway, No. 3 in Australia, No. 5 in France and Ireland, and No. 20 in Italy.

"Impera" was released on March 11. The 12-song effort was produced by Klas Åhlund and mixed by Andy Wallace .

GHOST mastermind Tobias Forge worked on the follow-up to 2018's "Prequelle" with Åhlund and Swedish co-writers Salem Al Fakir and Vincent Pontare , whose credits include Madonna and Lady Gaga .

In March 2020, at final show of GHOST 's "Prequelle" tour in Mexico City, Mexico, the band officially introduced Papa Emeritus IV , the new character who is fronting the act for its "Impera" album phase.

Forge performed as a "new" Papa Emeritus on each of the band's first three LPs, with each version of Papa replacing the one that came before it. Papa Emeritus III was retired in favor of Cardinal Copia before the release of "Prequelle" .

MASTODON was one of the "Best Metal Performance" nominees at the 64th annual Grammy Awards , which was held on April 3 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The progressive metallers were nominated for their song "Pushing The Tides" , the first single from their latest album, "Hushed And Grim" , which came out in October.

The follow-up to 2017's "Emperor Of Sand" , "Hushed And Grim" was recorded at West End Sound , which is located inside of Ember City , the rehearsal facility that members of MASTODON manage in Atlanta. Helming the effort was Grammy -winning producer/mixer/engineer David Bottrill , who has previously worked with MUSE , DREAM THEATER and TOOL , among many others.

The "Hushed And Grim" artwork was created by longtime MASTODON collaborator Paul Romano , who also designed the sleeves for "Crack The Skye" , "Blood Mountain" , "Leviathan" and more.

"Emperor Of Sand" debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard 200. That LP was nominated for the 2018 Grammy Award for "Best Rock Album," and its opening track, "Sultan's Curse" , won the Grammy Award for "Best Metal Performance."

Ghost announce huge tour with Mastodon and Spiritbox

Three of the coolest bands in metal today are hitting the road together!

Ghost band: Tobias Forge

Ghost have announced a blockbuster set of North American tour dates - and they're bringing along some heavyweight pals from the metal scene for the ride.

Joining Tobias Forge and his spooky crew on the next leg of the Imperatour worldwide trek are Atlantan riff beasts Mastodon and fast-riding modern metal hype machine Spiritbox (aside from two dates - Green Bay, Wisconsin, at which Mastodon will swap out for death metal legends Carcass, and Danville, Virginia's Blue Ridge Rock Fest, which will feature its own lineup).

The tour announcement also included a new chapter in Ghost's ongoing video series, featuring a somewhat awkward family dinner involving Papa Emeritus IV/Cardinal Copia, Sister Imperator and the ghost of Papa Nihil. Because of course.

Tickets for the tour go on sale this Friday (May 20) at 10 a.m local time via  Ticketmaster .

Ghost + Volbeat’s 2022 U.S. Tour to Kick Off Next Week

The countdown is on, as we're down to one week away from the start of one of 2022's most anticipated tours. Ghost and Volbeat will be co-headlining a U.S. tour that kicks off Jan. 25 in Reno, Nevada and continues through a March 3 finale in Anaheim, California. All dates, cities and venues can be seen at the bottom of this post.

As if that weren't enough, the 26-date run will also include a can't miss opening set from special guests Twin Temple . Tickets for the tour are currently available at this location .

“We are so incredibly excited to get back to these cities with a Volbeat headline show, but getting to do it alongside a headline show from our ghoulish friends in Ghost AND bringing the incomparable Twin Temple with us? How soon will it be January already!? Start getting ready, the thunder and lightning is coming to your town in 2022,” offered Volbeat in a statement at the time of the tour's initial announcement.

Both bands are already off to a hot start in 2022, as Volbeat's " Shotgun Blues " has climbed to No. 1 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock and Mediabase's Active Rock charts, while Ghost's " Hunter's Moon " has held the No. 2 spot on both charts. Volbeat's latest chart-topper, their tenth overall, has given the band a Billboard Mainstream Rock Chart record for the most No. 1 songs by an artist based outside of North America.

The two bands are also further whetting the collective appetites of their fanbases by teaming up on for a special limited-edition Double A-Side 7" that ties their respective covers for Metallica 's Blacklist charity album. For that release last year, Ghost took on Metallica's " Enter Sandman " and Volbeat put their stamp on " Don't Tread on Me ." The 7” will be pressed on crystal clear vinyl and limited to only 3,000 units with 115 copies available at each tour stop on a first come, first served basis. All proceeds from sales will be split between Metallica's All Within My Hands Foundation, Ghost's Camp Aranu'tia charitable choice and Volbeat's Børne Cancer Fonden charity designation.

The tour comes with Volbeat promoting the newly released  Servant of the Mind album, while Ghost are currently working up a new full-length record that's expected later this year. Be sure to catch Ghost, Volbeat and their support act Twin Temple starting next week. Tickets are available here .

band ghost tour 2022

Children of North America, rejoice… GHOST will once again bring the “euphoric spectacle” (ROLLING STONE) of its live ritual to North America for the next leg of its globally dominating IMPERATOUR. The North American IMPERATOUR will see the GRAMMY® Award-winning Swedish theatrical rock band headlining 19 arenas across the U.S. and Canada (plus an appearance at Virginia’s Blue Ridge Rock Fest), kicking off August 26 at San Diego’s Pechanga Arena and running through September 23 at the Resch Center in Green Bay. The newly announced dates will comprise Ghost’s first North American run since the March 11, 2022 release of its fifth album IMPERA via Loma Vista Recordings.

The announcement of IMPERATOUR’s North American swing completes a perfect storm of Ghost mania, coinciding with this week’s ascension of “Call Me Little Sunshine” to the top of the Rock Radio chart and the unveiling of Chapter 11: Family Dinner, the newest installment of Ghost’s long-running narrative series of webisodes. In this next chapter, we find Papa Emeritus IV, having returned to the Ministry, joining Sister Imperator, Mr. Saltarian, and the spirit of Papa Nihil for a meal of Chinese takeout.

Support on all dates (with the exception of Green Bay which will feature support from Carcass, and the Blue Ridge Rock Fest) will come from GRAMMY® Award-winning band Mastodon, who have quietly evolved into one of the most influential, inimitable, and iconic rock bands of the modern era. Tickets for Ghost’s North American IMPERATOUR will be on sale from May 20 at 10am local time at https://found.ee/Ghost_Tour . American Express® Card Members can purchase tickets in select markets before the general public beginning Wednesday, May 18 at 12pm local time through Thursday, May 19 at 10pm local time. Last night (January 25th) Ghost made their triumphant return to the stage, playing their first show in nearly two years at Nevada's Reno Events Center alongside tourmates Volbeat and Twin Temple. Papa Emeritus IV sashayed through an epic 16-song set that included the live debuts of "Hunter's Moon" and the group's Blacklist comp cover of Metallica's "Enter Sandman" plus the world premiere of new song "Kaisarion." Ghost's most recent single, " Call Me Little Sunsine ," was notably absent from the setlist (scroll to see it in full, courtesy of setlist.fm ), but the Swedish occult-rock superstars more than made up for that with the unveiling of the Nameless Ghoul's cool new steampunk astronaut outfits. Check out photos from the show, posted on the group's Instagram, below. Ghost's upcoming album, Impera , is due out March 11th release via Loma Vista.

New on HBO and Max in May 2024 — all the new shows and movies to watch

A s the weather warms up, Max is gearing up for some exciting new releases to make itself known as among the best streaming services .

To help you find that perfect show or movie, we've rounded up the best content that's new on Max in May 2024. Zac Efron's wrestling epic, "The Iron Claw," makes itself known as a must-watch new movie despite not being a 2024 Oscars contender. The April showers might have wrought the anxiety just a bit, which is where "Turtles All The Way Down" might be able to get you out of that funk thanks to its feel-good story on friendship, love, and finding oneself in the swirl of life.

Max will also be plenty packed with all of your favorite sports content this May, with major highlights being the NBA Playoffs and NHL's Stanley Cup Playoffs. Baseball, soccer, and cycling will also return throughout the month on Max.

Here's everything new on Max in May 2024. If you're still looking for more streaming recommendations, be sure to check out our roundup of all the  best new shows to watch this week .

New on Max in May 2024: Top Picks

'hacks' season 3 (may 2).

Laughing its way to its third season, Max's comedy gold "Hacks" returns with another hilarious outing that sees Jean Smart's Deborah Vance at the top of her game. Her standup special that debuted at the end of the last season has driven her back into stardom and she's living life quite lavishly in Las Vegas. Meanwhile, her ex-comedy writer Ava (Hannah Einbinder) returns to Los Angeles in the hopes of finding a better role for her writing career.

This season will kick off a whole year following the duo's separation. Deborah and Ava will once more cross paths, finding new ways for both to grow together all with the good-natured hysterics baked in. "Hacks" season 3 corrals a total of nine episodes, with two of them landing on premiere night.

Premieres May 2 on Max

'Turtles all the Way Down' (May 2)

Based upon John Green’s novel of the same name, “Turtles All the Way Down” follows the story of 16-year-old Aza Holmes (Isabela Merced), who struggles with anxiety and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Following a chance reconnection with her childhood crush, Aza’s life spirals into questions of love and happiness.

With a new lease on working through her mental illnesses, Aza decides to go on a quest in search of a fugitive billionaire with the help of her friend Daisy (Cree Cicchino). It’s unclear how much of the novel will find its way into the upcoming Max teen drama, but it’s sure to be packed with surprises and more than a few twists to keep fans guessing.

'The Iron Claw' (May 10)

The 2023 biopic out of A24 follows a family of wrestlers in the throes of a supposed curse. Named after the iconic "iron claw" move in-ring, "The Iron Claw" spans from 1979 to the 1990s as it depicts the attempted successes of Fritz Von Erich's sons.

Zac Efron leads the charge as Kevin Von Erich, the second oldest son and often narrator of the film. His enthusiasm and discipline are palpable as he describes a deep fondness for the sport of wrestling, but winning doesn't come easy. Over the course of the film, Kevin and his brothers have consistent fights with their father. This emotional turmoil is what drives the plot as the group tries to become household names in wrestling.

Falling into similar territory as "The Fighter" before it, "Iron Claw" is a fascinating tale of family and destiny. Although it might have been snubbed at the 2024 Oscars, it still came out on top as among the top 10 films via the National Board of Review.

Premieres May 10 on Max

'Pretty Little Liars: Summer School' (May 9)

“Pretty Little Liars” returns once more, this time taking up a completely new name following the 2022 hit “Original Sin.” This second season, aptly titled “Summer School,” will follow in the footsteps of its previous season, taking inspiration from the likes of “Midsommar” and “Texas Chainsaw Massacre.”

Millwood is once more steeped in a horrifying villain in the “Bloody Rose,” a knife-wielding, red-mask-donning killer that will “test every one of the girls,” claims showrunner Lindsay Calhoon Bring. New cast members joining the show include Antonio Cipriano as Johnny, Ava Capri as Jen, Noah Alexander Gerry as Christian, and Loretta Ables Sayre as Lola, all of whom will bring their own mysteries and plenty of lies to the table.

"Turtles All the Way Down" tackles anxiety through its 17-year-old protagonist, Aza Holmes (Isabela Merced). It’s not easy being Aza, but she’s trying... trying to be a good daughter, a good friend, and a good student, all while navigating an endless barrage of invasive, obsessive thoughts that she cannot control. When she reconnects with Davis, her childhood crush, Aza is confronted with fundamental questions about her potential for love, happiness, friendship, and hope.

May 3 - 'Stop Making Sense'

Newly restored in 4K to coincide with its 40th anniversary, the 1984 film was directed by renowned filmmaker Jonathan Demme and is considered by critics as the greatest concert film of all time. Stop Making Sense stars core band members David Byrne, Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz, and Jerry Harrison along with Bernie Worrell, Alex Weir, Steve Scales, Lynn Mabry and Edna Holt. The live performance was shot over the course of three nights at Hollywood's Pantages Theater in December of 1983 and features Talking Heads' most memorable songs.

May 9 - 'Pretty Little Liars: Summer School'

Following the harrowing events of "Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin,” our Pretty Little Liars face a fate worse than death - summer school. However, Millwood High isn’t the only thing getting in the way of their fun summer jobs and new, dreamy love interests. A new villain, who may or may not have a connection to A, has come to town and is going to put them all to the test.

May 10 - 'The Iron Claw'

The true story of the inseparable Von Erich brothers, who made history in the intensely competitive world of professional wrestling in the early 1980s. Through tragedy and triumph, under the shadow of their domineering father and coach, the brothers seek larger-than-life immortality on the biggest stage in sports.

May 11 - 'NIKKI GLASER: SOMEDAY YOU'LL DIE'

Taped late last year in front of a sold-out, lively audience at the Moore Theater in Seattle, Washington, Glaser dives into a wide range of topics that have further evolved her comedic prowess including why she doesn’t want kids, the harsh realities of aging, her sexual fantasies, and plans for her own death – all in her hilarious, unapologetic, and brutally honest style. NIKKI GLASER: SOMEDAY YOU’LL DIE showcases why Glaser is one of the funniest, and most fearless, comedians today.

May 20 - 'STAX: SOULSVILLE U.S.A'

STAX: SOULSVILLE U.S.A tells the story of an underdog record label comprised of Black and white collaborators who ushered in the groundbreaking, industry-altering soul music of Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, Booker T. & the M.G.’s, The Staple Singers, Sam & Dave and many others that defined a generation. Driven by instinct and defying the notion that Black artists needed to be “made marketable,” the Memphis-based label went from ultimate outsider to one of the most influential producers of Black music – finding its place inside the broader mainstream record industry. Stax became more than a record label; it transformed into a beacon of Black freedom. It is a quintessentially American story of an audacious group of individuals who dared to make their own music on their own terms creating an institution that has continued to help define our culture long after the label itself has gone.

This is the story of Stax. As raw and honest as the sounds the label laid to vinyl.

“The Garcia Project is a must-see for anyone who had the good fortune of seeing Jerry’s band live. I was lucky enough to share the JGB experience with Jerry, John Kahn, Maria Muldaur, Keith and Donna. Being on stage with Mik, Kat, Dan and the crew is the closest thing to the original.  They are Jerry’s kindred spirits when it comes to making music. Even if you never saw JGB live, you can see and hear their spirit at a Garcia Project performance.” – Buzz Buchanan, Drummer for The Jerry Garcia Band 1977-1978
