A new tour is bringing the Bluenose II to the world — virtually

By Kieran Delamont

Posted Jul 14, 2021 04:44:00 PM.

Amidst all the sullen pandemic news, it might have been easy to miss a historic birthday for the province of Nova Scotia: the 100th anniversary of the launch of the original Bluenose .

While that ship is long gone, its successor, Bluenose II — itself celebrating its 60th anniversary — has spent much of the pandemic tied up to a Lunenburg dock, and its summer tour as the province’s most recognized tourism ambassador has been limited to Maritime ports.

A new digital project from Smarter Spaces, in conjunction with the operators of the Bluenose II, hopes to change that. If you can’t bring the Bluenose to the world physically, you can at least do it digitally, courtesy of  a full 3D virtual tour of the ship that launched earlier this month.

“We identified the Bluenose as a really great opportunity to show off Nova Scotia,” says Collin Gillis, owner and CEO of Smarter Spaces, the company that created the 3D tour. “Hopefully as COVID closes out here, it will be this kind of stuff that attracts even more tourists to come to Nova Scotia.”

But how do you recreate an iconic attraction like the Bluenose — or the Maud Lewis house, which Smarter Spaces also recreated last year early on in the pandemic — in digital form?

“There’s a lot of different technology around 3D tours,” Gillis says. In last year’s recreation of the Maud Lewis exhibit, he explains, they used a platform popular with real estate firms, which Gillis said had “a lot of limitations” in terms of customization.

“So we decided to come up with our own system. One of our technicians, who’s really tech-savvy, kind of got thrown into the fire and said ‘let’s try to develop this.’ He jumped on board, and we developed a custom platform.”

The result is a system that allows them to recreate spaces in cyberspace easily and with a great deal of customization.

“In our approach, you don’t have to scan every eight feet,” says Gillis. Using 360° cameras, “we just go in and we can get 360° panoramic photos or videos anywhere we want our technology now, using our platform allows us to go anywhere and merge them together into one.”

In some ways, it’s the culmination of a pandemic-long process for the company and its service.

Virtual tours of historical sites and tourist attractions weren’t front of mind for the company when the pandemic began, but being able to recreate cultural sites like this was an area of business that “took off” last year — but not an unwelcome one for Gillis and his company, who have found an interesting new avenue to explore, in addition to the usual corporate and industrial work they do.

“It’s a fabulous opportunity working with the executive director and with Captain Watson of the Bluenose ,” Gillis says.

“What was really great is the captain went through it — we provided him with a very raw tour that allowed him to jump around the ship. … He snipped and identified every area that he felt was important, or that he gets tons of questions on, and that was how we developed the hotspots. That was really based on his experience, so it was really unique to be able to talk to him — someone who has been such an integral part of the Bluenose .”

It’s a line of business that Gillis and his company figure will be around for years to come.

He points out that so many historical sites aren’t universally accessible, so they are able to help bridge that gap for spaces where renovations are impractical. And he also expects tours like this to feature more prominently in the tourism industry down the line.

“I won’t say specifically, but we’re in talks with federal and provincial historic sites,” says Gillis. “They’re starting to recognize that it’s only going to attract more people, and that just because you went and did a tour of the Bluenose online, it doesn’t mean that you still don’t want to go and see it in person.”

Capt Rubio said: Good morning, Captains! Now I'll give you a brief update on the hull work. My plan is to complete all the interventions before moving on to the painting work. Every day I'm more convinced not to install the second planking according to the AL manual and paint the first one directly. My objetcive is, maybe, to keep this overal texture apereance: Boards, nails, etc. View attachment 378024 I installed the bollards. I decided to paint them white. I installed the rudder. I intend to add hinges to it, which are not included in the kit. I made space for the bowsprit, shrouds, and scuppers. It was a great challenge to cut the openings in the hull to make them as aligned as possible. Despite everything, I'm satisfied with the result. I hope that once everything is painted, it will look good. I've been jumping from one topic to another. While the starboard bollards were ready, I decided to work on some deck structures. This way, I explore techniques and have fun. Step by step, progress is being made. Capt Rubio said: Good morning, captains! I hope you're all doing well. In this thread, I hope to show you the progress of my Bluenose II model from Artesanía Latina. It's a "guerrilla construction" because I currently don't have a designated place to set up a workshop for building it, so you'll see pictures in the backyard, in the dining room, etc. It's a mobile shipyard. This is my second and largest build so far. The kit is a gift from my father, who inherited the "bad habit" of ship modeling from his uncle, who was a professional modeler and had several of his models exhibited at the Naval Museum in Valparaíso, Chile. Therefore, this build has an important emotional component. In my ongoing learning process, my goal is to create a model that reflects the current state of the Bluenose II, without necessarily strictly following the kit instructions (I was hoping they would be more specific, but they're not). Honestly, I don't expect to create a perfect or historically impeccable model or anything like that because it would be a huge challenge, but I do expect to have fun and learn while building it as a way to distract myself from everyday life. I will work in short intervals over the course of days. As my first major comment, I must thank the members of SOS for their posts and the information provided on this website. There is a lot of useful information about construction techniques and, of course, about the Bluenose II. One discovery I made in one of the posts is a virtual tour of the ship moored in Lunenburg. There, we can explore the ship from bow to stern with high-quality images of both the interior and exterior. The link to the virtual tour. Next, to delve into our topic, you'll be able to see photographs of the hull construction process. Like my first model (Halcon) , the hull seems to be the most challenging part since it will have an impact on the final result and appearance of the model. I hope you find this thread enjoyable and useful if there is any chance i can teach you something. Sending warm regards from Cajón del Maipo, Chile. Click to expand...

bluenose II cruise

We My husband and I and another couple from Lebanon Maine took the cruise out of \Lunenburg this October. The weather was perfect and the cruise was perfect. The staff were friendly and handled everything handsomely. After moving here in 1979 it was my bucket list item to do and it delivered. I books on line which was very user friendly to do. Definitely a must when visiting the South Shore and the Bluenose is in harbour doing cruises.

We missed seeing the Bluenose last year and my husband was very disappointed. For his 70th birthday I booked a cruise aboard the Bluenose and it was a fantastic culmination to our second Nova Scotia trip. It was thrilling to watch the crew hoist gigantic sails and get us underway. The first mate and second mate were women. As a teacher, I watched the second mate training the new crew members with patience, efficiency and passion for the work. The first mate was equally interesting to watch. We had an opportunity to speak to them both and were fascinated by what they had to say. My husband, who sails, loved every minute of it.

We took a tour of the harbor on a gorgeous autumn day. The crew of young people were delightful. In the gift shop one can watch the video (The Queen and The Skipper) before going on board. I highly recommend knowing the history of the Bluenose because it makes you appreciate the glory of Lunenburg's sailing history. Without knowing the history, the harbor tour is nice, but knowing what the original Bluenose accomplished provides an emotional connection that is well worth it and raises the tour up a notch. If you appreciate the rigging of the Bluenose, there is a wonderful fellow at dockside making knots in the old fashioned way; a great take home memory.

I'm really not sure what the big deal is when it comes to Bluenose II. I guess if you're into replica boats then it's pretty interesting to check out but otherwise it's just a pretty basic Wooden Boat that apart from being a replica of the one on the dime doesn't have much meaning to most people. Depending on where you see it I think that you can head on to the boat but I can't imagine how that could be worth it at all unless you’re totally obsessed with tall ships and replicas. You can head down to the water and check it out but don't count on spending too much time at the Bluenose II or even being that impressed.

bluenose 2 virtual tour

The boat is beautiful and worth seeing . As it is a icon in Canadian history I felt the crew and or documentation should be available to read more and see more. Had to go back to the room and to the Internet to read. Should be tours. Unfortunately we did not have time to go on the two hour sailing. I am sure it would of been worth while

My husband and I traveled to Lunenburg from Halifax to go on this cruise. We took the afternoon cruise and really enjoyed it. It seemed very quick but it was two hours. Enough to get sunburned in September. We were able to catch a really good wind back and it was wonderful! Watching the crew hoist the sails and then bring them back down before coming into shore.

Hall County deputies take ‘Virtual Dementia Tour’ as training for understanding dementia challenges

Virtual Dementia Tour Hall County ((Courtesy: Hall County Sheriff's Office))

HALL COUNTY, Ga. — The Hall County Sheriff’s Office had staff participate in a private event called the “Virtual Dementia Tour” on Friday to help spread understanding and awareness of dementia in the community.

According to the sheriff’s office, it’s an event hosted by the Beyond Dementia Coalition, developed to help communities better understand the challenges faced by those living with dementia.

The Beyond Dementia Coalition was founded by Jill Crunketon, a clinical social worker in Gainesville, Ga., to raise awareness about and acceptance of people with dementia, according to the organization.

Hall County Sheriff Gerald Couch had HCSO personnel take two days to go through the training, including deputies, investigators, jail staff and others.

In total, the sheriff’s office said they had more than 100 members of its staff participate after their colleagues gave a strongly positive response to the activities.

The event itself was held at Johnson High School, where participants “were outfitted with gear that mimics dementia symptoms, then directed to perform five simple tasks.”

After doing the demonstration mimicking the symptoms of dementia, staff and others took part in a discussion session.

While the event itself was private, HCSO said the Beyond Dementia Coalition will host a community tour on May 22 at Interactive Neighborhood for Kids.
