Cruise Ship Cozy Mystery

Cruising through midlife publisher's summary.

My name is Trixie Troublefield, and I see ghosts. It’s sort of a new thing, and it’s more than a problem.

While I was busy running around doing some last minute packing for my tropical anniversary cruise, my husband was busy bedding three other women—at the same time. So I did what any other sane person would do—I grabbed my suitcase and took to the high seas, alone.

Here’s the thing. I’ve never been on a plane or a cruise ship. I’ve never left the state of Maine. I’ve never been on my own. I’ve never seen ghosts before either, but that seems to be on the universe’s agenda for me, too.

I’ve got eighteen days to recalibrate, rethink my life, recharge, and eat all the food I can get my hands on. And I might look into a poltergeist pest control service while I’m at it.

Of course I’ll start a travel blog and log all of my adventures for the world to see. Why not rub all the fun I’m having in my cheating ex-husband’s face? I’ll call it Suddenly Single! What a Trip.

But no sooner do I step on board of that stately cruise ship than I stumble upon a body.

Midlife on the high seas is proving to be a real killer.

Thanks, Betty. I’m on my way to add this series to the Cruise Ship list.

February 6, 2013 at 8:49 pm

I’m currently reading ‘Murder for the Halibut’ by Liz Lipperman. The setting is on a Caribbean cruise ship, Carnation Queen.

February 7, 2013 at 7:33 am

Thank you, MJ. I will be adding her as soon as I can get into the editing page. Who knew there are so many Cruise Ship theme mystery books?!

Janean says

February 6, 2013 at 11:07 pm

Thanks so much for adding this theme. I can’t wait to read this amazing books.

February 7, 2013 at 7:44 am

Janean, I bet you didn’t know you would have this many Cruise Ship mystery books in your near future! (I certainly didn’t.) Aren’t these Cozy Mystery readers great?!?

Deahna says

February 7, 2013 at 1:24 am

Sorry to be a dissenting voice, but Agatha Christie’s “Carribean Mystery” does NOT take place on a cruise ship. There’s not even a cruise ship mentioned.

All the action happens at a hotel and on their beach. She came there by air (before the books starts) and leaves by air as well (the book ends with her saying goodbye at the airstrip).

You’re so right, Deahna. You would think I could have remembered that plot!

February 7, 2013 at 1:47 am

Here’s another one:

The Queen’s Jewels (Murder, She Wrote) by Jessica Fletcher and Donald Bain.

And at least starting out on a cruise ship is Panning for Murder, same series, same author.

February 7, 2013 at 7:50 am

Thank you, Deahna! I’m off to add both of those books to the list.

February 7, 2013 at 10:49 am

Have just checked my kindle and found two more:

Chris Mcauley: Love and Murder on the Queen Anne (Rex Mathers Mysteries)

Carola Dunn: To Davy Jones Below (Daisy Dalrymple Mystery)

February 7, 2013 at 7:05 pm

Thank you, Deahna!

February 7, 2013 at 3:07 pm

Well, I was looking up something else and discovered Danna’s description for Marie Moore: Moore, an ex-science teacher as well as a writer and managing editor of a newspaper, also owned her own travel agency. She writes the Sydney March Mystery Series, which features a travel agent. Moore has a lot of first-hand experience in the travel agency field, including guiding tour excursions, and going on many, many cruises.

February 7, 2013 at 7:06 pm

BB, thank you for telling us about yet another Cruise Ship mystery book.

linda c says

February 9, 2013 at 9:10 am

Danna, I’ll wager a bet that quite a few people living on the East Coast would dearly love to be going on a cruise about now, what with the blizzard. Those people sure have had a rough time weather wise for the last several months. Mother Nature sure has a weird way of reminding all of us that we aren’t as in charge as we think we are. Maybe She wants to remind us that we are at her mercy at all times. Here’s hoping that any who frequent this forum of yours are safe and are riding the storm.

February 11, 2013 at 10:58 am

Linda, as nice as being on a cruise in lieu of hunkering down for a blizzard, I would probably find myself worrying about my house the entire time I was out at sea. She sure is in charge!

February 18, 2013 at 8:32 pm

This sure was a very timely topic what with those people being stranded on that cruise ship last week. I can’t understand why it took so long for whoever was in charge of bringing that ship to port to do that!! Why couldn’t another ship or say maybe the Coast Guard been sent out to get those people off the ship?? Reminds me sort of when Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast and all those people were left stranded in the Super Dome for so long. Doesn’t make sense to me!!

February 19, 2013 at 12:08 pm

Linda C, or how about how when Hurricane Katrina hit and all of those school buses were just parked in their lots?

February 28, 2013 at 1:44 pm

Another book that takes place on a cruise ship is J. A. Jance’s Birds of Prey. My husband and I enjoyed the audio version of this story where, J. P. Beaumont accompanies his grandmother and her new husband on their honeymoon cruise to Alaska.

February 28, 2013 at 2:16 pm

Thanks, Merry, I just added Birds of Prey to the cruise ship mystery theme.

March 7, 2013 at 8:45 am

While on a cruise recently I checked a book out of the library about some people connected with an art gallery all being invited on a Caribbean cruise. People disappear. I didn’t get to finish the book before the cruise ended (actually the book disappeared from my stateroom?????…another mystery) and I never did recall the author, nor do I remember the exact title but I think it was “Murder By Knots”. Can anyone help me with this?

March 8, 2013 at 4:36 pm

Florence, take a look at Nancy Cohen’s Killer Knots . This might just be the mystery book you are looking for.

As for your other mystery – can’t help you with that!

March 11, 2013 at 1:33 pm

Here’s the description for Murder on the Cruise Ship by V. Hurst (could this be it?):

This book is a sequel to “Murder at the JC” by the same author. Our story begins with the theft of three famous paintings from the Louvre Museum in Paris. At about the same time the book’s main characters, the Bryans and the Flannerys, fly from Houston to Barcelona to board ‘The Northern Lights’ for their Mediterranean cruise. They befriend a young couple, the Adams, who soon disappear from the ship and are assumed dead. Our foursome spend the rest of their voyage attempting to solve the mystery of the Adams’ disappearance. Later developments back in Houston link this mystery with the theft of the three paintings. Working with the FBI, they eventually apprehend the killer and recover the paintings.

Might I recommend Red Sand by Ronan Cray. There are two cruise ships, though it discourages most from taking a cruise again.

November 5, 2013 at 3:03 pm

I just saw Dark Passage, by Marcia Talley at the Baltimore county public library as just received. according to the synopsis, Hanna Ives who resides in the Annapolis area is taking a cruise with her sister and 14 year old niece who disappears on the ship. It turns out she is not the first one on this ship!!!

November 5, 2013 at 7:36 pm

Thank you, Joan J, I just added Marcia Talley’s Dark Passage to the Cruise Ship Mystery books list.

September 23, 2014 at 11:32 am

Another good mystery to add to this list is Getting Old Is The Best Revenge, by Rita Lakin. It’s the second volume in her Gladdy Gold series. In this book Gladdy and her friends win a free cruise and find themselves hunting for a murderer on the ship.

April 13, 2015 at 6:42 pm

Margaret, I’m so glad you mentioned this Cozy-on-a-cruise book. Rita Lakin is a favorite author of mine, so shame on me for not remembering to add it to this list! Thank you!

December 28, 2015 at 10:53 am

Hi, CRUISING FOR MURDER stars a young Chicago actress hired to work entertainment on a cruise from Port of Miami to the islands. A lot of behind-the-scenes cruise ship stuff. This is the second book in the Morgan Taylor series and is a funny quick read.

December 28, 2015 at 4:25 pm

Sue, thanks for suggesting this book for the Cruising list. It fits right in!

“The False Inspector Dew” by Peter Lovesey is set on board the S.S. Mauretania, sailing from London (Southampton) to New York in 1921.

May 6, 2016 at 5:20 pm

Susan*, thank you! I’m going to go add it to the Cruise Ship theme. (Doesn’t that sound like fun? Not the adding part >>> the cruise ship part…)

Jan Arthur says

August 28, 2017 at 9:27 am

Danna, Hope Callaghan has a whole series with the cruise ship series that I did not see on your list of cozy cruise ship mysteries. She has written 8 books in her Cruise ship Cozy Mystery Series. Her first one is entitles “Starboard Secrets” and her newest one is “High Seas Heist”. Please include her in your cozy series lists. She has three other topics set of cozy mystery series.

August 28, 2017 at 10:28 pm

Jan, thanks, I’ll have to take a look at it some time.

August 30, 2017 at 3:49 pm

Lily Harper Hart writes the Rowan Gray Mystery series. Rowan is a photographer on a cruise ship. She has three out so far: Stormy Seas (3), Murky Seas (2), and Welcoming Seas (1).

September 20, 2018 at 4:48 pm

I haven’t read all of the comments, so I may be repeating someone else. First Class Murder by Elliott Roosevelt is set on a French luxury liner, the Normandie.

Dawn Brookes has a whole series of mysteries on cruises, starting with A Cruise to Murder.

Death and Other Details Review: Hulu's Whodunit Mystery Takes Itself Too Seriously

Mandy Patinkin investigates a murder on a cruise ship in the dry new series

Violett Beane and Mandy Patinkin, Death and Other Details

Violett Beane and Mandy Patinkin,  Death and Other Details

On paper, Hulu's  Death and Other Details  has all the makings of a great whodunit: entitled rich people living their best lives, an outsider who has infiltrated the inner circle, the working class that hates them all, and a disgraced detective trying to make a splashy comeback. So it's disappointing that, in reality, the series never quite pops.

With the resurgence of whodunits thanks to projects like  Knives Out, Only Murders in the Building,  and Kenneth Branagh's modernized Poirot movies, any new one has big (gum)shoes to fill. The detective at the center of the case is key to keeping the audience engaged in solving the murder. In  Death and Other Details , Mandy Patinkin steps into that role as Rufus Cotesworth, the world's greatest detective.

Or at least he was, until he was unable to solve the case of a murdered woman with ties to a powerful family. Through flashbacks, we learn Cotesworth fled midway through the investigation, leaving the family and the dead woman's daughter, Imogene (played as a child by Sophia Reid-Gantzert and in the present by Violett Beane ), behind.

In the present day, Cotesworth shows up on a luxury cruise ship commandeered by that same family to celebrate the retirement of its patriarch, Lawrence ( David Marshall Grant ). There is a colorful cast of characters aboard, including Lawrence's entitled kids, Tripp ( Jack Cutmore-Scott ) and Anna ( Lauren Patten ); the commandeering head of staff, Teddy ( Angela Zhou ); and Imogene, whose complicated relationship with the family leaves her straddling both worlds.

When one of the guests is suddenly murdered, Imogene and Cotesworth are thrown together to solve the case, bringing the past and present together through flashbacks, re-enactments, and interrogations set against colorful backdrops and featuring beautiful costumes.

Death and Other Details

  • Lots of larger-than-life suspects
  • A fun setting
  • Great costumes and scenery
  • Takes itself too seriously
  • Too much exposition
  • Too many complicated twists

It's got almost everything Agatha Christie could ever want from a murder mystery, but Death and Other Details  lacks fun. When dealing with suspects, a show like this needs to toe the line between believable and outlandish. It needs lighter moments to balance the morbid situation at hand. Rather than lean into those moments and play up its quirks, Death goes the other way.

It's not just the characters who take themselves too seriously. Class division and wealth are the topic of way too many conversations, hitting viewers over the head rather than letting people draw their own conclusions. The ship's setup is very  Upstairs, Downstairs or Downton Abbey , and the theme seems obvious enough without the constant exposition.

There are moments when the show borders on fun. A karaoke scene between siblings, a night of unbridled passion, and an ongoing storyline involving one guest broadcasting the case for his social media following are some of the standout lighter moments. The series could use more of them.

As for Cotesworth, he, too, is too serious. Patinkin easily commands a scene, but he doesn't exude the charm you want from your lead guy. His strongest scenes are those in which he's most animated, such as a talk show flashback in a later episode or his interactions with his partner at the office. On the ship, however, he's tightly wound and private, offering gruff advice to Imogene as he lets her lead the investigation.

Unfortunately, Imogene is an unsympathetic character. Finding her mother's killer is what drives her, but it often undermines the importance of solving the murder at hand (even if it may be the same killer). She's got access to money, beauty, and brains, and plenty of people on the ship seem to fall for her quickly. Given everything she has so readily accepted in life, it's hard to root for her and her hypocrisy.

As for the case itself, it's hard to tell whether a satisfying ending is in store. Hulu released eight of the ten installments to the press, and although a new suspect comes to light in each episode, it's hard to tell where the story is going. Many of the reveals come via flashbacks off the ship, retold while a present-day Imogene or Cotesworth steps back into a scene to discuss information as it unfolds.

Despite the ship's isolated nature, some passengers come and go, and it doesn't take long for the case at hand to grow into a larger conspiracy that's no longer contained. That's fine for a thriller or psychological drama. But part of the fun of whodunits is discerning the killer and making educated guesses based on the clues others may have missed, without stretching too far outward.

In other words, it's all about the  Details . And while there are still two episodes for this story to come full circle, it will take a lot of pulling back and simplifying to get to that satisfactory ending.

Premieres: Tuesday, Jan. 16 with two episodes on Hulu, followed by a new episode each Tuesday Who's in it: Violett Beane, Mandy Patinkin, Lauren Patten, Rahul Kohli, Angela Zhou Who's behind it: Mike Weiss, Heidi Cole McAdams For fans of: Whodunits, murder mysteries and shows that tackle class division How many episodes we watched: 8 of 10

Hollyoaks' Ross Adams lands first role since announcing departure

He'll be jumping aboard The Good Ship Murder .

preview for Hollyoaks Soap Scoop! Carter targets Pride

The news (via The Sun ) comes as the Channel 5 murder mystery series has been renewed for two further seasons.

The show, which marks a reunion for the Coronation Street 's Ward and Tyldesley, debuted last year, and follows cruise ship cabaret singer Jack Grayling (Ward) who uses his skills as a former detective when a passenger is found murdered on board.

After joining forces with First Officer Kate Woods (Tyldesley), the pair try to crack a wave of murder mysteries, each set against the backdrop of a sunny location.

“Series one was something of a journey – or mid-price cruise – into the unknown, not least trying to film a drama on a cruise ship with 6,000 holidaymakers heading to eight different countries," production company Clapperboard's Mike Benson told The Sun .

“We’re excited to be bringing this series back,” Channel 5 executive Paul Testar added.

As well as Adams's addition to the cast (reportedly in the role of Colin Smallwood), Coronation Street 's Claire Sweeney is set to return as Beverley alongside Ward and Tyldesley.

Speaking upon his Hollyoaks exit announcement last month, Ross said: "Now feels like the right time for me to try some other things that I've been super keen to do. I really hope you'll all come with me for the ride!"

Meanwhile, while promoting the first series of The Good Ship Murder , Ward left fans baffled with his new hairstyle as some didn’t recognise the actor – and later opened up about amusing fan encounters since he's sported the new look.

The Good Ship Murder airs on Channel 5. Hollyoaks streams first online via Channel 4 each weekday at 7.30pm. Episodes then air on E4 the following day, before getting their YouTube premiere a week after that.

Selected omnibus episodes are available via Prime Video .

About the author

Dawn brookes.

Award winning author, Dawn Brookes lives in Derbyshire, England and holds an MA in Creative Writing with Distinction. She is the author of three cozy mystery series:

The Rachel Prince Mysteries are hugely popular and combine a unique blend of murder, cruising and medicine with a touch of romance. These books are regularly bestsellers across the globe. The first two books are soon to be translated into Japanese.

The Carlos Jacobi series has gained its own readership. Carlos is a PI, who owns an ex-cadaver Springer Spaniel and works alongside Fiona Cook, a troubled, but likeable.

The Lady Marjorie Snellthorpe Mysteries begins with the prequel Death of a Blogger and has grown in popularity since first being published.

Dawn also has a 39 year nursing pedigree and has travelled extensively throughout her life. Nowadays, she loves cruise holidays and says she should do more for research purposes! Dawn brings her passion for cruises, animals and engaging characters along with a love of clean crime into her Rachel Prince & Lady Marjorie series.

The surname of the Rachel Prince protagonist is in honour of her childhood dog, 'Prince', who used to put his head on her knee while she lost herself in books.

Dawn is also author of a series of memoirs. Hurry up Nurse: Memoirs of nurse training in the 1970s, Hurry up Nurse 2: London calling and Hurry up Nurse 3: More adventures in the life of a student nurse. Dawn worked as a hospital nurse, midwife, district nurse and community matron across a thirty-nine year year career. Before turning her hand to writing for a living, she had multiple articles published in professional journals and co-edited a nurse textbook.

She grew up in Leicester where her second and third Carlos Jacobi Books are based, Dawn moved to London and Berkshire but now lives in Derbyshire. Dawn holds a bachelors degree with honours in community health studies, a Masters degree in education as well as her MA in Creative Writing.

Writing across genres, Dawn also writes for children.

Dawn has a passion for nature and loves animals, especially dogs and there has rarely been a time in her life when she hasn't had a dog. Animals will continue to feature in her children's books as she believes caring for animals and nature helps children to become kinder human beings.
