Grand Canyon National Park

Grand Canyon National Park, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, is less than a couple hours drive from Page, AZ. If you weren't already planning on making a stop at the Grand Canyon as part of your American Southwest trip, you definitely should. Here are a few helpful things to consider for making the most of your Grand Canyon visit. There are three rims of the Grand Canyon that most people visit; south, north and west. The time of year and desired activities will likely determine which rim you should visit. The price of entry to the West Rim is also more than the North and South Rims. Grand Canyon can be experienced by foot, shuttle, charter bus, mule, river or air tour. For the majority of Grand Canyon visitors, half a day to a full day is all one needs to spend there to take it all in. Truthfully, that's because it is incredibly overwhelming. Those willing to take on the challenge of becoming more intimate with the Grand Canyon go on an overnight hike or brave the white water rapids of the Colorado River. But if your trip needs to be short and you want to make the most of it, we recommend going on a tour of your choice, or do the free hop-on-hop-off shuttle if you are on the South Rim. Some people make it their life's mission to unfold the mysteries of this Natural Wonder; others look over the edge, take a few photos and call it a day. But the Grand Canyon is one of those things that you get out of it what you put in - and there's an unfathomable amount history, geology, anthropology, adventure and beauty that this one giant hole in the ground has to offer.

SOUTH RIM The South Rim of the Grand Canyon is located in Arizona just 80 miles from Page. It is the most popular rim to visit because it is open 365 day a year and is park of the the National Park service, which means there are ranger talks, shuttle services, bathrooms, restuaruants, helpful visitor information, even a general store and a post office. The South Rim's free hop-on hop-off shuttle makes it easy for visitors to cover a large portions of the South Rim in a short period of time. Entrance fee is $30 per vehicle, which includes all of its passengers. There are also several hotels and cabins in and near the South Rim, making this the most convenient and accessible rim of the Grand Canyon.

North Rim The North Rim of the Grand Canyon is also part of the National Park service and is favored by outdoor enthusiasts because its lack of crowds and remoteness. Even though it is 123 miles from Page, Page is still considered to be one of the closest towns to the North Rim. The North Rim of the Grand Canyon is closed during the winter months (mid October - mid May) due to its more severe weather amount of snow that it gets. The North Rim is higher in elevation than the South Rim and cooler temperatures are to be expected. Roads are not maintained during the closed season and no guest services are provided. The North Rim does provide, though, a serene experience and a stunning view of the canyon. If you're comfortable with fewer services, visiting the North Rim is highly recommended!

West Rim The West Rim of the Grand Canyon is owned and ran by the Hualapai Tribe and has its own special attractions to offer such as the Grand Canyon Skywalk, a horseshoe-shaped glass bridge that extends 70 feet out over the rim of the Canyon allowing visitors to look down through the glass platform 4,000 feet down to the Canyon floor. The West Rim is most commonly visited from Las Vegas as it is closer to the Nevada border. Also, visitors cannot drive directly to the West Rim in their own vehicles like in the South Rim. Because this is Hualapai Land, visitors must buy tickets or purchase a tour in order to see the West Rim or experience any of the attraction. The minimum cost per person to visit the West Rim is the Legacy Pass at $44 +tax.

Going on a Grand Canyon tour is one of the best ways for visitors to make the most of their time here. The price of the tour will certainly depend on the type of tour your choose to go on and the location in which your tour begins. Sedona, Flagstaff, and Tusayan all offer Grand Canyon tours of the South Rim, while tours leaving from Las Vegas typically bring guests to the West Rim. There are Grand Canyon tour companies that extend their services to multiple rims and attractions in between such as Hoover Dam, Horseshoe Bend, Glen Canyon Dam, Lake Mead among several other points of interest. Here are some recommended Grand Canyon tours from Page and other nearby cities.

Parking at the Horseshoe Bend parking lot is free, though it does get very busy. Vehicles often have to wait for a spot to open up, especially during the busy times of the year. The parking lot is suitable for RVs and large vehicles. Also, visiting Horseshoe Bend is free. There is no entrance fee, but you may visit Horsehoe Bend as part of a combination/multi-destination tour, which will then have a total tour guide fee. The 3/4 mile hike each way will take on average 15- 20 minutes and the path is unpaved with steep and sandy sections making it difficult for visitors with wheelchairs or strollers. Always be mindful of your step, especially when taking photographs with the bend behind you.
