Why It’s Worth Visiting Texas Hill Country for Wine Tasting

From finely-tuned Tempranillo, crisp Viognier to beautiful Rhone-style red blends , Texas Hill Country Wineries are not only situated around beautiful scenery, but the wines they’re producing are only beginning to gain worldwide recognition. That’s because the majority of Texas Hill Country vineyards only sell their wines within Texas – otherwise, the Texas wine bug would have gone viral long ago.

That’s why I’m aiming to expose this juice. The Texas Hill Country was largely overlooked until the past few years. (It wasn’t until the early 1990s that much of anything was produced here).

But did you know that now the Texas Hill Country AVA is the third-largest AVA in the U.S. ? At over 9,000,000 acres, and with a climate and terroir not unlike Rioja, Spain or Southern Rhone, France, skilled vintners are discovering the potential to produce world-class wine within the soil of this unique location.

Navigating The Texas Hill Country Wine Trail on Wine Road 290

Today we’re going to take a look at a stretch of road that leads through the picturesque region of Fredericksburg, Texas. That stretch of road is aptly named Wine Road 290 . The whole area is unique in that many of the vineyards and wineries are a part of the Fredericksburg Wine Road 290 Association. Thus, what benefits one winery typically benefits another, as many are located right next to each other. This makes a day trip to the region incredibly convenient.

How many wineries should I visit?

That depends on the tolerance of your group. Things to keep in consideration:

  • If you’re drinking and driving – don’t overdo it. Consider hiring a driver or   jumping on a shuttle from Austin
  • Begin your day in the late morning on a full stomach — by 11 AM most wineries are open
  • Plan your Texas Hill Country wine tour for a weekday — fewer crowds

Below, we’ll highlight 10 of our favorite Texas Hill Country Wineries. Starting in Stonewall, we’ve put together the perfect itinerary of wineries to visit that any wine enthusiast or group can enjoy without breaking the bank.

Best Texas Hill Country Wineries

Only about one hour and 30 minutes northwest of downtown Austin, Wine Road 290 in Fredericksburg can be easily accessed by hopping on Mopac (TX-1), and then merging onto US 290 – West.

Did you know Texas Hill Country is an up-and-coming Viognier growing area? Elevated, sunny, windswept, limestone hillsides provide ideal growing conditions for stubborn grapes like Viognier. Some Vintners here have really begun to fine-tune their craft and produce refreshing white wines. While the whites are great, my favorite red in all of Hill Country came from Pedernales.

Pedernales Cellars makes for a great first stop for a wine tour in Fredericksburg because it will leave an impression on you. This is an award-winning winery, with a beautiful patio that offers 360-degree views of the surrounding hill country. You’ll often encounter live music at the winery, adding a bit of an Austin-esque feel to this remote and flavor-prone property.

Don’t be shy to roam around the estate! Grapes are sourced from multiple vineyards within the region, and as I mentioned above, their GSM red blend is my favorite red wine thus far in all of Texas Hill Country. Tastings do not need to be scheduled in advance.

2916 Upper Albert Road, Stonewall, Texas

(830) 644-2037

Perissos Vineyard and Winery

For a European-vibe right here in Texas, consider a visit to the lovely property at Perissos. Winetravelers frequently rave about the warmth and southern hospitality of the staff at this winery. In addition, the atmosphere is one of our favorites in the region. This is a beautiful destination if you’re looking to have a relaxing afternoon by the vines, enjoy a bottle of wine and nibble on some cheese and charcuterie. Live music is also common here. Wine tastings do not require a reservation and are $18 per person. Tours are also available for $40 per person.

Becker is a bit more mainstream (now producing around 1.3 million bottles annually) and has a few other… attractions associated with the property. If you time your visit in either May or June, there’s a good shot you’ll get to see a sweeping lavender field not far from the tasting room. They also have extensive fields of wildflowers if you time your visit right.

The beginning of summer is also peak season so it can get somewhat crowded. Try to plan your visit during the week. Check out a virtual tour of the Becker tasting room and property. On-site tours typically run every 30 minutes on weekends.

If you’re looking to stay in wine country a little bit longer, Becker has a Bed & Breakfast adjacent to the property for around $125 per night.

464 Becker Farms Rd, Fredericksburg, Texas

(830) 644-2681

Sister Creek Vineyards

This homey, cute and welcoming location is actually a winery that was converted from a cotton gin. Sister Creek in Texas Hill Country is best known for its friendly staff, great tasting wines and unique atmosphere.

Plus, they’re not overpriced. You’ll be satisfied with your tasting experience, and definitely ask about getting a winery tour — they’re free.

This award-winning winery offers two kinds of tastings at two low prices, and their wine styles focus on European blends. Plus, they’re open most days of the year.

1142 Sisterdale Rd, Boerne, Texas

(830) 324-6704

If you’re looking to merge a wine tasting experience with a meal, Silver Dollar is well worth a stop on the western side of Hill Country. From build-your-own-pizzas, chicken wings to street tacos, relax in a hammock chair and sip and swirl amongst the vines. Try pairing a pizza with the Peace Maker Merlot, you won’t be disappointed. This is a true destination for Texas food, wine and hospitality. There’s a good chance you’ll also get to enjoy a visit with the owner.

8264 US-290, Johnson City, Texas

(830) 308-7750

Grape Creek Winery is an Italian-styled winery located on a beautiful property. If you’re following along with this itinerary, this will likely be your last stop for the day.

Be confident in your decision – Grape Creek Vineyards has snatched up over 100 medals over the years with their wines. Done up in a Tuscan-themed architectural style, the buildings on the property are primarily made of stone with classic red roofs. Prices vary depending on when you visit. Weekday tastings are $12, while Saturdays and holidays are $15.

Try the Bellissimo and the Cabernet & Syrah blend.

10587 E U.S, US-290, Fredericksburg, Texas

(830) 644-2710

Some of our staff recently visited Fall Creek and had an incredible time! Staff Writer Jacqueline Coleman explains what you can expect:

“On an average warm, sunny Hill Country day, you will find guests sitting all around the garden-style property in Driftwood, just outside of Austin, sipping on Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay , or perhaps a Tempranillo. The tasting room inside has a homely comfort about it, complete with a fireplace and TV for football-watching. This is Texas, after all, and football is king, so it only makes sense that a winery owned by two University of Texas alums would have a TV for Saturday games.

Out on the back porch of the charming country house-converted-into-winery, tables are spaced out for groups to sit and wait for a table-side tasting, which has been the program since the beginning for tastings at Fall Creek Vineyards’ Driftwood location. Guests can sit and order wine from the tasting list, which is then brought to them as they enjoy the scenery of the Texas Hill Country landscape around the property from the comfort of their seats on the porch.”

18059 Farm to Market Rd 1826, Driftwood, Texas

(512) 858-4050

True innovators in the Texas wine industry, William “Bill” Blackmon and Chris Brundrett created William Chris Vineyards in 2008. Since that time, it’s exploded in popularity. Not just within Texas Hill Country, but around the United States as well. Chris and Bill focus on minimal impact viticulture that creates high-impact wine. Their property offers a gorgeous tasting room and relaxing outdoor setting, with live music on Sunday. Chris Brundrett was just recognized as one Wine Enthusiast’s “Producers That are Redefining American Wine”

10352, US-290, Hye, Texas

(830) 998-7654

For a somewhat removed and boutique experienced in the northeastern corner of Hill Country, definitely consider a stop by Spicewood Vineyards. This charming vineyard atmosphere will appease those who want to kick back and relax on a patio for the afternoon. Be sure to try their Cabernet Franc, Tempranillo and Syrah alongside their cheeseboard. This is also a pet-friendly and kid-friendly winery, so don’t be shy to bring along the family. It’s also a frequently talked-up wedding venue.

1419 Co Rd 409, Spicewood, Texas

(830) 693-5328

Duchman Family Winery: Add Either a First or Last Stop

Depending on where you leave from in Austin, if you have a little extra time or would rather split your Hill Country wine experience between both Fredericksburg and Driftwood (about 30 minutes Southeast of Fredericksburg), head on downtown Duchman Family Winery to enjoy their beautiful stone tasting room and very friendly staff. The Duchman property is beautiful, but this winery also has an Italian restaurant conveniently located next to the tasting room.

The majority of wine produced at Duchman is Italian and the tastings are by far the most affordable in the area. Try the Aglianico , our favorite on the menu!

13308 Ranch to Market Rd 150, Driftwood, Texas

when was this article written and posted??? Isn’t time the most important piece of info?

Arguably, you left the BEST Texas Winery off this list. I sorta see why – you limited yourself to the touristy 290 region – and I guess for purposes of this article, I guess that’s understandable. But the BEST Texas Winery is just north of 290 off Park Road 4 outside of Burnet – Perissos Vineyard and Winery has by far the best wines in Texas. They are like most Texas wineries, you have to go there to get the wine!!! {PS: You can blame THAT on the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission!!}. Salud!!!

If you’ve tried a Texas wine or two over the years and found them lacking or nondescript, what you find in tasting rooms today might just shock you. The past five years have seen Hill Country wineries adapt to and trust in the terroir , resulting in a new benchmark of quality. In the 2000s, Texas winemakers were largely chasing California to little benefit, often planting popular grapes at the expense of quality. Prescient winemakers and grape growers who experimented with plantings during that time found that grapes from the Rhone (roussanne, syrah, viognier, mourvedre), Spain (tempranillo), and Italy (vermentino, sangiovese) were far more suited to the Central Texas climate. Today, these seven grapes appear often in local tasting rooms , along with those from Portugal and some holdovers from Bordeaux. Due to limited supply, many of these wines are done as multi-varietal blends.

hill country wine tours austin

When visiting Hill Country wineries today, one thing is constant: crowds. Tourism numbers are approaching 1.75 million visitors per year , making tasting room sales a large part of local winery business plans — and leading to some gaudy tourist traps along the main thoroughfares. With 5,000 acres planted and nearly 400 wineries, Texas is now the fifth-largest wine producer in the United States. This has many secondary effects: Airbnbs in Fredericksburg and the Hill Country are booming, and a handful of wineries now offer cottages or tiny houses to stay at on-site. The tasting rooms themselves have also evolved from functional to fashionable, with most wineries taking advantage of beautiful outdoor spaces both for the views, and due to COVID-19. On recent visits, most bottles were priced in the $25 to $50 range, with a handful skewing higher. Due to both scarcity and popularity, many of the most-trafficked wineries like William Chris and Lewis reserve certain wines and tasting room benefits for members of their subscription wine clubs.

Texas grapes are expensive, and extreme weather events have made yields unpredictable, so some wineries have supplemented their Texas grapes with those from the Southwest or the West Coast, sometimes fueling ire in others who did not. As of September, a new labeling law took effect requiring that all Texas wine using an American Viticultural Area designation, vineyard name, or county must entirely comprise Texas grapes, while those using the generic “Texas” on their labels may still supplement using grapes from out of state. For those curious about recent vintages, the 2017 selections currently available in tasting rooms represent a high-water mark for quality — try them when you find them. Also expect 2018 and 2019 vintages to stick around for a longer stretch, as those were good weather years that resulted in high yields.

Tips for a Hill Country Wine Excursion

As with all food and drink travel, knowing what to expect can improve the experience. Here are several things to keep in mind before your next visit to Central Texas wine country.

  • Plan ahead. There’s really no wrong time to visit Texas’s Hill Country , but spring and fall — when the weather is relatively mild — tend to attract the most people to the region. Hours vary by season, so call or check websites for up-to-date hours before visiting. For planning purposes, three wineries is probably the ideal number to visit in one day. Also note that many wineries, restaurants, and shops plan around the peak tourism days of Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Many food and wine options are closed on Monday and Tuesday. Due to the weather, many wineries run out of their white wines later in the summer.
  • Bring a picnic. While many wineries offer snacks like potato chips, cheese, and bread, there are stretches without any substantive food options. Pack a picnic lunch and avoid feeling hungry and frustrated.
  • Make appointments. On weekends with pleasant weather, and during wedding seasons (spring and fall), wineries’ tasting rooms can easily reach capacity. Making advance appointments is a must for spring and fall visits. Also note that some tasting rooms do not allow large groups or buses. COVID-19 may also limit some venue capacities this fall.
  • Ask questions. The winery staff wants to tell you about what you’re drinking. Let them guide you.
  • Know about minimum purchase requirements. At wineries, tasting-flight fees are sometimes refunded with a minimum purchase. Ask about this if you decide to buy some bottles.
  • Hydrate. Drink plenty of water before, during, and after tastings, especially if visiting several wineries.
  • Designate a driver, and consider staying somewhere nearby. The Texas wine industry is spread out , and the driving times can be extensive. If you aren’t hiring a driver, designate one from your party (and buy them a bottle or two of your tasting favorites for home consumption). Alternatively, wineries like Messina Hof and French Connection offer overnight and weekend rentals.

Where to Drink

With hundreds of Texas wineries to choose from ( especially along Texas Wine Road 290 ), it’s no longer necessary to create a comprehensive list of destinations. The following is j ust a taste of wineries Eater has visited and wines editors and contributors have sampled over the past two years — the very best of what Texas grapes can do in wine form.

As the coronavirus pandemic is still ongoing , please follow the wineries’ masking and social distancing guidance. Where possible, opt for outdoor tastings

Ron Yates Wines

This tasting room is one of the first you encounter on the Johnson City to Fredericksburg corridor , and it’s also a perfect bellwether for Texas wine. More than 20 wines are available to taste by the glass and in flights, with everything from grenache rosé to single-vineyard sangiovese on offer. The bright, spacious tasting room has bay windows that open to the patio on mild days. There’s also a small selection of snacks like jerky, cheese, and chips in the deli case. Kuhlman Cellars

Kuhlman ’s tasting room has multiple options to suit customers’ tastes: There are indoor and outdoor tasting spaces, and a food and wine pairing option for those wishing to linger. Eclectic red and white blends are the house style here: The signature Alluve mixes tempranillo, mourvedre, and grenache, while the Calcaria white is a trebbiano, roussanne, and viognier blend. Hours : 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. Sunday through Monday Prices : $20 to $35 per tasting; food pairings are available Wines to try : Alluve, merlot, Calcaria Address : 18421 E. Lewis Wines

A pleasant stop near Johnson City, Lewis Wines , which uses estate grapes from vines planted in 2014, has a loyal following for its multiple Texas rosés and its delightful, slightly fizzy white Swim Spot. The outdoor tasting room is spacious and can accommodate larger groups, and the winery often hosts fun weekend events like paella and flamenco performances or rosé and poke. Overall, a great introduction to Hill Country wine. Hours : 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Monday Prices : $25 per tasting Wines to try : Hill Country Rosé, Round Mountain Rosé, Swim Spot Address : 3209 Hwy. 290 West, Johnson City How to book : Reservations

One of the newer Hill Country entrants, Ab Astris planted 12 acres of grapes in varieties less known to U.S. vintners like tannat, souzao, and clairette blanche on its estate vineyard in 2018. They also source from well-known vineyards like Newsom and Reddy. The light, airy tasting room feels modern, and the winery showed particular skill with their white wines. At present, most tastings are conducted on the covered outdoor patio due to COVID-19. Hours : Noon to 5 p.m. Thursday, Friday, and Sunday; noon to 6 p.m. Saturday Prices : $20 per tasting Wines to try : albarino, tannat Address : 320 Klein Rd., Stonewall How to book : Reservations

Adega Vinho

This Stonewall winery is new and slightly off the main Texas wine trail . The large tasting room evokes a casual hangout, with retro couches, mirrors, and wood paneling providing a welcoming tasting space. While the winery will eventually focus on Portuguese grapes, the current lineup includes both Rhone and Spanish varietals. The staff is amiable and knowledgeable. It’s a fun and relaxing stop on any itinerary. Hours : noon to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Saturday; noon to 6 p.m. Sunday Prices : $20 to $35 per tasting; food pairings are available Wines to try : Newsom Tempranillo, Pordosol (a mourvedre and tempranillo blend) Address : 1000 S. Ranch Rd. 1623, Stonewall How to book : Reservations

Pedernales Cellars

Pedernales ’s tasting room features a deck with shady trees, lovely Hill Country views, and a kid- and dog-friendly atmosphere. The winery focuses on Rhone and Spanish grapes, with white varieties like roussanne and reds including a range of tempranillos and blends. Recent vintages are showing a slightly lighter (if still New World) house style, with a nice balance between fruit and acidity. Reserved seated tastings and private tours are available, as are cheese plates if you order ahead. Hours : 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Saturday; noon to 5 p.m. Sunday Prices : $20 to $35 per tasting Wines to try : graciano, mourvedre, viognier reserve Address : 2916 Upper Albert Rd., Stonewall How to Book : Reservations

Duchman Family Winery

Perhaps the easiest win for an Austin day trip and (quite conveniently) near tourist barbecue mainstay the Salt Lick , Duchman Family Winery is a potent one-two punch for out-of-town guests. Opening times are generous. There’s a large lawn with picnic and yard game areas for outdoor sipping. Bottle prices are reasonable — especially when considering the winery sources 100 percent Texas grapes — and there’s a broad selection available. Reservations are currently required Friday through Sunday due to COVID capacity , while walk-ins are accepted Monday through Thursday. Hours : Noon to 6 p.m. Monday; noon to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday; noon to 8 p.m. Friday through Saturday; noon to 7 p.m. Sunday Prices : $15 per tasting flight Wines to try : vermentino, aglianico, Reddy Vineyard Sangiovese Address : 13308 Farm to Market 150 West, Driftwood How to book : Reservations

Lost Draw Cellars

Conveniently located in downtown Fredericksburg, this is a great stop for those spending a weekend in town. The rustic, relaxed patio space is great for those looking for less pomp and circumstance, and the wines are consistently well-made and enjoyable. There are both regular tastings and food and wine pairings available, and the winery hosts live music most long weekends. Hours : 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Saturday Prices : $20 to $35 per tasting Wines to try : High Plains Mourvedre, Moonlight Roussanne Address : 113 E. Park St., Fredericksburg How to book : Reservations

Sandy Road Vineyards

A small but impressive newcomer, Sandy Road is located several miles up Ranch Road 1320 — you’ll have to go looking for them as there’s no signage. From an elegant and nuanced roussanne to the perfect sangiovese pizza companion, the wines here from Ron Yates associate winemaker Reagan Sivadon are pretty special. Opt for a VIP-style treehouse tasting overlooking the vineyards (reservations required), or simply walk in on weekends for a tasting in the just-completed pavilion. Hours : 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Saturday; noon to 5 p.m. Sunday Prices : $20 to $41 per tasting Wines to try : sangiovese, mourvedre, roussanne Address : 3932 Ranch Rd. 1320, Johnson City How to book : Reservations

William Chris Vineyards

Perhaps the best-known of the newer crop of Hill Country wineries , William Chris has developed a huge wine club following using 100 percent Texas-grown grapes, Old World farming techniques, and a focus on fruits best suited to the state’s terroir. The winery pours a notable mourvedre, and is the leading producer of that varietal in Texas. The tasting room is packed with members on weekends when live music is often featured, so book ahead. Hours : 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Wednesday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday through Saturday; 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday Prices : $20 to $75 per tasting; food pairings are available Wines to try : La Pradera Roussanne, La Pradera Grenache Address : 10352 Hwy. 290, Hye How to book : Reservations

French Connection Wines

A Rhone-focused winery from winemaker Benjamin Calais, French Connection has already found a strong following among Hill Country wine fans. Standout wines include an approachable roussanne and the crisp, chillable red Côtes de Hye. Also here are more esoteric offerings like a four-year barrel-aged Reserve roussanne. There’s a long, generous tasting porch here with pretty Hill Country views and a staff excited to educate and entertain. There are also three “maisonnettes” available to book for overnight stays. Hours : Noon to 6 p.m. Friday; 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday; 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday Prices : $22 to $45 per tasting Wines to try : La Connection (a rosé and white blend), Côtes de Hye Address : 1197 Hye-Albert Rd., Hye How to book : Reservations

Wedding Oak Winery

Wedding Oak is named for a 400-year-old oak tree near the winery. While the main tasting room location is in San Saba , most Austinites will opt for the second location in Fredericksburg , which offers a quiet, spacious tasting room with attentive service. The winery sources fruit from both the Texas Hill Country and Texas High Plains, with a wide selection of styles. Italian varietals are among the standouts on the tasting room menu. Hours : 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday; 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday Prices : $15 to $20 per tasting Wines to try : Primitivo, Montepulciano Address : 6009B Hwy. 290 East, Fredericksburg How to book : Reservations

Fall Creek Vineyards

Fall Creek ’s offerings represent the work of Texas wine’s elder statesman : Fall Creek’s first vineyard was planted in 1975, and its Tow winery opened in 1983. In 2013, the winery brought in Chilean winemaker Sergio Cuadra to transition to a higher level of quality, and recent vintages have reflected great results from his involvement. The Driftwood tasting room offers a selection of light bites such as cheese platters and charcuterie boards to accompany tastings. Hours : 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. Sunday Prices : $20 per tasting Wines to try : sangiovese, Salt Lick Tempranillo Address : 18059-A Farm to Market Rd. 1826, Driftwood How to book : Reservations

Slate Mill Wine Collective

While this “many producers under one roof” project is still in an early stage, it’s worth checking in on. A combination production facility and tasting room, you’ll find winemaker Rae Wilson’s innovative Wine for the People selections here, along with highly regarded offerings from Josh Fritsche under both the 1851 and Tatum labels. Wines from the upcoming Slate Theory Winery at this location will join the lineup at some point this fall. Hours : 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday through Saturday; noon to 6 p.m. Sunday through Monday Prices : $20 to $30 per tasting Wines to try : Dandy Rosé, Grower Project (various varietals), Tatum Mourvedre Address : 4222 Hwy. 16 South, Fredericksburg How to Book : Reservations

Southold Farm + Cellar

A smart stop for natural wine fans, New York transplant Southold Farm + Cellar has gotten the attention of wine hipsters with unconventional blends, smart graphic design, and a noninterventionist philosophy. Earlier this year, the winery added a seasonal prix fixe restaurant, the Kitchen at Southold Farm + Cellar , with dishes like gnocchi, smoked eggplant with naan, and gazpacho. Wine pairings are available at the restaurant, as are a la carte drinks. Reservations are required for all tastings and meals, so book ahead. Hours : 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday through Monday Prices : $25 to $40 per tasting Wines to try : Grand Gestures Viognier, Don’t Forget To Soar White Blend Address : 330 Minor Threat Ln., Fredericksburg How to book : Reservations for September , reservations for October through November

Tipsy-Logo

Texas Tipsy Tours offers Dripping Springs wine tours from Austin and the Texas Hill Country. Please choose from our custom private tours.

Dripping Springs wineries are a popular stop on Austin wine tours due to their proximity to the city. The 290 wine trail is located just southwest of Austin. Along 290, you will find the towns of Dripping Springs/Driftwood, Johnson City, Hye, Stonewall, and finally, the wildly well-known wine region of Texas, Fredericksburg. These towns, ultimately blending in together, are still unique in their rights. This is easily seen by the apparent difference in the landscape of the rolling hill country of Dripping Springs to the flatlands of Fredericksburg, covered with vineyards and tasting rooms.

Imagine you and your best babes sitting around a chic-modern tasting room overlooking the lush vineyards of a notable Texas winery, drinking a glass of a smooth Cabernet Sauvignon-Syrah blend. Or maybe you are more into a glass of crisp Viognier. That’s why you booked your trip to Texas after all, right- for Texas wine country!? You are deep into the planning process and don’t know what to book next.

Texas Hill Country Wineries organizes four unique events annually, most notably the Texas Wine Month Passport in October. Purchase a passport for a full complimentary tasting at each winery. With a limit of four wineries a day, you can space out your tour of the Texas hill country wineries throughout October. They do sell out, so don’t even think about not purchasing- and hire a driver for your day so you can really enjoy!

Are you planning a stay in Dripping Springs? Check out our mention in  “I Love Dripping Springs” Travel Guide. One important thing to remember when picking out wineries for your tour is whether or not they offer wine grown from Texas grapes, which is not true of all wineries in Texas. It is even harder to find a wine that is grown from 100% Texas-grown grapes.

Dripping Springs Wine Tour Wineries

Austin bachelorette event planning

The Dripping Springs Area:

To give you perspective, Dripping Springs and Driftwood are about 45 minutes from Downtown Austin. Due to their proximity, many groups doing an Austin wine tour prefer to visit this area. I often lump these two towns in together, as they are adjacent to each other and host a handful of wineries. Here, you will find stunning views of the Texas Hill Country—rolling hills, backroads, and large shade trees covering the wineries.

Central Texas Limo Services:

There are so many wineries in so little time. We always promote safe driving, so we recommend a designated driver or, better yet- a luxury tour company. Contact Texas Tipsy Tours at  [email protected]  to book your tour or get more information. Cheers!

Fall Creek Vineyards- Driftwood

Fall Creek is the oldest winery in the Texas Hill Country. While the estate vineyard is in Tow, the Fall Creek Winery in Driftwood also offers views of the grapes walking up to their tasting room AND a homey tasting room feeling. They do offer 100% Texas grown-grapes from several estate and farmer-owner vineyards. If you are looking for truly premium 100% Texas wine, this is a must-go for your Texas wine-tasting experience. This is the best way to get an authentic taste of the different varietals in Texas. You won’t be disappointed!

Their tasting room is a beautiful estate that was previously someone’s home before Fall Creek renovated and made it their own while still keeping the charm and comfort. Their tasting room features tables set up on the enclosed patio (great for a nice Texas sunshine day) overlooking a pool and a beautifully manicured lawn complete with blooming flowers in the spring. Many tables are also set up inside the estate to offer a more intimate setting. Make this your first stop when planning your wine tasting in Austin!

Duchman Winery- Driftwood, Texas

Duchman Winery- Driftwood, Texas

Duchman is 100% Texas wine, but it is a better option for Italian wine lovers, as it often features Italian varietals, including Sangiovese, Dolcetto, and Vermentino. These grapes have been grown in the Texas high plains as the climate is most similar to that of Italy.

The tasting room features Italian vibes, and the entrance hosts Instagram-worthy shots. However, the tasting room is often very crowded, and reservations for tastings are currently unavailable. On tour, we will purchase wine bottles to share so your group can sit outdoors (or have limited seating inside on a first-come, first-served basis). If you are looking for a great experience with informative wine tenders, this might not be the place for you. However, if you want to grab a good glass of wine, take some pictures, and sit outside with a picnic lunch (or, better yet, a pizza from  Trattoria Lisina  next door), this is a good option.

Wimberley Valley Winery- Wimberley, Texas

While technically not located in Dripping Springs or Driftwood, Wimberley Valley Winery is located in Wimberley, a small town next to Driftwood. It is just a short drive (20 minutes from Fall Creek, for reference). This winery does not offer 100% Texas wines and is a better option for those looking for sweet wines, as it offers wines such as apple, blueberry, and blackberry.

The property here is beautiful, with abundant outdoor seating and extensive large oak trees covering the property and providing shade from the Texas heat. The winery offers a unique livestock experience on neighboring land that often comes up to the fence. Again, the wine choices are not for everyone, but the property makes up for it!

Texas Hill Country: Beyond Dripping Springs Wine Tours

During your tour of Texas wineries in the Dripping Springs/Driftwood area, you can undoubtedly find a premier selection of wine and some of the best views of the Texas hill country. The shorter distance from Austin, Texas, is largely the factor that seals the deal for most groups seeking transportation out of Austin.

However, if you are a wine aficionado, you may consider taking the longer route to the well-known wine region of Fredericksburg, Texas. See our Fredericksburg Wine Tour Guide here. Here, you can find many wineries that offer premium 100%-Texas wines. The transportation time from Downtown Austin is closer to about an hour and a half. The landscape changes here to flat land where you can see miles and miles of vineyards and tasting rooms. There will indeed be something for everyone in Fredericksburg.

The above descriptions are based on my personal experience visiting the wineries, my experience with the wineries as the owner of a luxury transportation company, Texas Tipsy Tours, specializing in winery tours, and my customers’ feedback on the wine, experience, and customer service.

BEST OF AUSTIN & THE HILL COUNTRY

Tour austin, explore the tx hill country, & eat famous bbq.

The essential Central Texas detour! We start with a city overview, showing you all the major landmarks, and then leave the tourist areas for the “real” Austin where you’ll see hidden gems only a local would know about. Hear about the lifestyle, food, music, and history while zipping around the city’s best areas. Then we’ll head for the hills, literally, as we wind through our beautiful Hill Country. Wildflowers and wineries dot the landscape and you feel as if you’ve entered a different world. Finally we’ll arrive at the most famous BBQ pit in Central Texas – The Salt Lick. You’ll experience why 2,000 people a day flock here to indulge on famous brisket and out of this world sides. If you only have day to “see it all” this is the detour for you!

See The Best of Austin With Our City & Hill Country Tour!

  • First we’ll do a quick tour of Austin and then head for the hills!
  • Explore the famous Hill Country
  • Devour the best bbq in Texas at the famous Salt Lick!
  • Take a road trip and explore Texas!

People love our Corporate / Private Experiences!

Had plenty of time to take pics and learn about Austin, even went to the famous BBQ Salt Lick for lunch… I can’t recommend Austin Detours enough.

I’ve lived in Austin for nine years and they have shown me businesses that I never knew existed.

The vehicle was really comfortable and Steven, our tour guide, was awesome.

Seriously felt like we were hanging out with a friend for four hours.
