You can now book a prison visit online

Booking a prison visit should be simple and straightforward. Until now that was far from the case. Booking a visit required both prisoner and visitor to jump through hoops: paper forms and drawn-out phone calls. And if the visit date turned out to be impossible, they had to start all over again.

Now you can book a visit online . It takes about 5 minutes. Before, picking an available date was pot luck. Now there's a date-picker that lets you select 3 possible slots instead of 1. It’s a straight-forward service with user-needs at its heart but, if you get stuck, you can call the prison's visits booking line and someone will help you with the booking.

By making it easier to book visits, prisoners will see more of their friends and family. Evidence suggests this will help their rehabilitation. Transformation isn't just about websites.

The service was built by the Ministry of Justice, with a combined team from the National Offender Management Service, HM Prison Service and MoJ Digital Services.

You can find a prisoner using this service: https://www.gov.uk/find-prisoner However it will be the prisoner's responsibility to get in touch with you to let you know their prison number etc.

Hi my partner was sent to nottingham today, I was on his previous list 4 months ago for a visit. Will that still be on the system all will it have to he put through again if so how long does it take to be approved for a visit? Thanks Paige.

According to the information on this page: https://www.gov.uk/prison-visits , you can arrange a visit to any prison in England and Wales through this service. If you're visiting someone in Northern Ireland or Scotland you'll need to contact the prison directly.

The Visiting Order (VO) number is generated by the booking system, it is included in your confirmation email and you will need this to change or cancel a booking.

However, if you're visiting a prison the guidance is that you only need your ID, not the VO number. If when you visit the prison you are asked for the VO number you should report this via the Contact Us link on the Prison Visits Booking form.

Hi Ilysa. Thanks for your question. A visit needs to be booked 3 working days in advance. So in this case, the visit request would have to be no later than Tuesday to allow for a visit on Sunday.

Visits and Getting to Full Sutton

Visits are held at the following times:

Thu: 14:10 – 16:15 Fri: 09:00 – 11:00 & 14:00 – 16:15 Sat: 09:15 – 11:10 & 14:10 – 16:15 Sun: 09:15 – 11:10 & 14:15 – 16:15

All visits must be booked through the visits booking number 01759 475 355. This number is available from 09:00 – 12:00 and 14:30 – 16:00 daily.

The Visitors Centre is provided for visitors and has baby changing facilities, toilets, including a toilet for the disabled, a small play area for children and a refreshment machines which serve hot and cold drinks and a variety of confectionery.

Getting There

If you want to plan your journey on public transport visit the Yorkshire Travel  produced web site, (click here) . It is an excellent way to plan your visits.

• Bus: There is a limited local bus service. Visitors from York must catch the York No. 10 service bus from York Station. There is no bus service on Sundays.
• Train: York is the nearest rail station, and then complete journey by taxi or bus. Taxi costs vary, but you can expect to pay between £12.00 and £15.00 per journey to or from York Station. Please ask at the Visitors Centre for advice.
• Car: From the North, take the A1 or A19 to York, A166 York to Bridlington – 2 miles from Stamford Bridge.
• From the North West, take the M6 – M62 to Junction 33 make North on A1 to A64 Tadcaster to York bypass. Leave A64 from A166 Bridlington – 2 miles approx. from Stamford Bridge.
• From the South, take the A1/M1 – M6 to M62 north at junction 33 to A64 Tadcaster to York bypass. Leave 164 from A166 to Bridlington 2 miles from Stamford Bridge.
• From the East, Hull/Lincolnshire using Humber Bridge – A1079 Hull to York approx. 25 miles from Hull following signs for Pocklington – Stamford Bridge. Full Sutton is approximately 6 miles from A1079. From Goole: A614 to Bridlington. At Market Weighton roundabout take A1079 and follow signs as for directions from the east.
• All visitors in cars must park in the visitors car park which is well signposted.

This page includes advice on how to book a prison visit, what to expect and how to get financial assistance for your visit.

How to book a visit

Which prison are they in, preparing for a visit, will i get searched, what happens during the visit, complaints about visits, financial assistance for visits.

You will need to book a visit for the person you’re going to see making sure you have their name, prison number and date of birth, this can be done through the Gov.uk website — https://www.gov.uk/prison-visits

You can also book visits by calling the prison directly.

If you are having difficulty booking a visit you can telephone the Prisoners’ Families Helpline  on 0808 808 2003 who will be able to give you advice about booking a visit. You will need to give them information about how long you have spent on the phone trying to book a visit.

If you don’t know where the person you want to visit is, you can email Prisoner Location Service who may be able to location your loved one — subject to conditions.

You should check that you know where you are going. You may want to arrive early, as there will be security to go through.

You will also need a photographic ID i.e. passport or driver’s licence for when you arrive at the prison.

You’ll be allowed to take some money with you to purchase some food and drinks from the prisons shop during the visit for you and the person you’re visiting. You can contact the prison to confirm the maximum amount you’re allowed to take to the visiting area.

You should be aware that you will not be able to hand property directly to the prison. If you would like to hand something in for the person you’re visiting, it would be useful to call the prison to ask if this is allowed to avoid disappointment.

Yes, your bags and pockets will be searched. You may also be given a rub down search and asked to open your mouth. All searches should be carried out in a polite and respectful way.

You will be allocated seats and you normally have to remain seated.

You can usually embrace at the beginning and end of the visit.

Officers will be present and may listen to your conversation.

You cannot usually smoke in the visits hall.

The rules for visiting should be clearly displayed in the prison. The visit can be refused or cut short if you break any of the prison visit rules. If you are a threat to prison security or are causing concern to other visitors, you may also find the visit is cut short or you are offered a closed visit.

Visitors should be treated professionally and with respect. If you feel you have been discriminated against or treated discourteously, you can write to the governor of the prison. The governor is expected to reply to you within 28 days. There is no formal complaints procedure for people visiting a prison.

You may be able to get help with the costs of visiting someone in prison. If you are a close relative, partner or the only visitor and have a low income, you should contact the Assisted Prison Visits Unit to see if you qualify for help.

Simple to use free visit booking service

Book to visit any UK inmate online.

When visiting a prison you have two choices, The first is to call the prison visits booking line and book your visit over the phone which can take an extremely long time, or you can request a visit online using the system provided by NOMS.

When requesting a visit online you will need to choose up to three dates and times then once the prison visit centre receive the request they will process it and email you a confirmation of the time and date of the visit.

When visiting a prison you will need to take at least 2 forms of identification, This can be a passport or driving license and a recent bill in your name and home address.

Its vital that you take I.D with you along with your booking confirmation as you may be refused entry without these.

When visiting a prison there are a few things you need to consider, remember you will be entering a secure environment so telephones and cash must be left in the lockers provided. Most prisons allow you to take coins in to purchase items from the canteen during your visit however the amount is limited to around £10 and must be in a clear money bag (the type you get from the bank is best).

If you require assistance with the cost of visiting a prison you may be able to get financial help if you’re over 18 and are claiming one of the following:

• Income Support
• Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance

Employment and Support Allowance

• Universal Credit
• Tax credits
• Pension Credit

Book a visit to prison

You will need to book a visit if you want to see someone in prison. You can book online to arrange an in person visit or a virtual visit with a prisoner or you can telephone the prison Visits Booking Office.

If you haven't visited a prison before you will need to phone to book your visit. You will be provided with your unique visitor identification number. Once  you have this you can start to book online.

Booking online

To book online for an in person visit or a virtual visit you will need:  

• to have previously booked a visit
• the visit reference number for the prisoner
• the prisoner's number
• your unique visitor identification number
• your date of birth
• your e-mail address and contact number
• the unique visitor identification number and dates of birth for all additional visitors (not needed for a virtual visit)

If you do not have these details, you should phone the relevant booking office.

Booking by telephone

To book a visit by telephone you will need:

• the visit reference number for the prisoner 
• the unique visitor identification number and dates of birth for all additional visitors

If you don't have a unique visitor identification number, you can get one from the booking office which you can use for future visits.

If the person you are visiting has just arrived in prison you will need to ring the booking office and they can arrange a visit.

Virtual visits

A virtual visit can last up to 20 minutes. The visitor can use a personal computer, mobile device or smartphone to have this meeting with the prisoner.

All virtual visits are supervised, if NIPS become aware of any behaviour, language or actions which are considered inappropriate, this will result in the visit ending early and possible removal of the facility in the future.

Registering for visits

All visitors need to be registered in the prison they are visiting. When you arrive at Visits Reception you need to be photographed, have a scan taken of your finger and you should bring identification.

When you first visit someone in prison, you will need to be registered on the prison system as a visitor. You will need to bring proof of identification with you when you are being registered.

To visit someone in Wymott you must:

• have the required ID with you when you go

At least one visitor must be 18 or older at every visit.

Getting to Wymott

Find Wymott on a map

The closest railway station is Leyland, from there you can get a taxi or take the bus.

The closest railway station is Leyland which is about 6 miles away from the prison. Taxis are available at the station, call 01772 424 242. The nearest minor station is Croston which is around 1 to 2 miles away, but there are limited facilities and there may not be any taxi’s, call 01772 600 489.

To plan your journey by public transport:

• use Traveline for local bus times

By Car from M6 (junction 28): Turn left, follow mini-roundabout, go straight across and follow road to traffic lights. Turn left, go through next set of lights, follow road round to right (leisure centre on left). At end, turn left and then immediately right. Follow road to end (mini-roundabout) and turn right. At next mini-roundabout, go straight across. Bear left into Slater Lane and go straight across at the traffic lights. Follow the road to the end and turn left. Garth is approximately one mile on the right (follow signs).

There is a free visitors car park and there is also a disabled visitors car park.

Entering Wymott

All visitors, aged 16 or older must prove their identity before entering the prison. Read the list of acceptable forms of ID when visiting a prison .

All visitors will need to be given a pat-down search, including children.

You may also be sniffed by security dogs.

Visitors must adhere to the prison dress code that applies, further details can be requested on your first visit.

There are strict controls on what you can take into Wymott. You will have to leave most of the things you have with you in a locker in the visitors’ centre or in your car - this includes pushchairs and car seats.

Call the booking line if you have any questions about visiting.

There is a visitor’s centre located between HMP Wymott and HMP Garth. Visitors must book in here first. You can leave items like mobile phones, cigarettes, food and drink etc. in lockers here while you have your visit. Visitors are required to produce Photographic ID and proof of address before being admitted to the prison and you will be searched by prison staff.

Please make sure you arrive at the visitors centre well before the time of your visit so that all the paperwork/formalities are completed.

You will be told the rules by an officer at the start of your visit. If you break the rules, your visit could be cancelled and you could be banned from visiting again.

There is a family-friendly visitors centre at Wymott which provides information and support to visitors. There will be no refreshments available during your visit and the chidren’s play area will not be available to use. The toilets are available.

The visitors centre is located between HMP Wymott and HMP Garth and all visitors are still required to book in here first. Free parking is available in the visitor’s car park.

• Saturday and Sunday: 8:30am to 11:30am and 12:30pm to 4:30pm

Secure video calls

To have a secure video call with someone in this prison you need to:

• Register all visitors
• Add the prisoner to your contact list.

You will receive a notification if a prisoner has requested a video call with you.

Phone calls

Prisoners do not have phones in their cells so they will always have to call you. They have to buy phone credits to do this.

They can phone anyone named on their list of friends and family. This list is checked by security when they first arrive so it may take a few days before they are able to call.

You can also exchange voicemails using the Prison Voicemail service .

Officers may listen to phone calls as a way of preventing crime and helping keep people safe.

You can send emails to someone in Wymott using the Email a Prisoner service .

You might also be able to attach photos and receive replies, depending on the rules at Wymott.

You can write at any time.

Include the person’s name and prisoner number on the envelope.

If you do not know their prisoner number, contact Wymott .

All post apart from legal letters will be opened and checked by officers.

Send money and gifts

You can use the free and fast online service to send money to someone in prison .

You can no longer send money by bank transfer, cheque, postal order or send cash by post.

If you cannot use the online service, you may be able to apply for an exemption - for example if you:

• are unable to use a computer, a smart phone or the internet
• do not have a debit card

This will allow you to send money by post.

Gifts and parcels

People in Wymott are given a list of approved items that can be sent to them as gifts. Contact Wymott for more information on what’s allowed.

Any parcels or books that family and friends wish to send in, must have prior approval from Wymott before sending items into the prison.

Make sure to include the person’s name and prisoner number on the parcel.

All parcels will be opened and checked by officers.

Friends and families of prisoners are permitted to send books directly to their loved ones, or can order books from approved retailers, which can source and send the books on to prisoners.   For the full list of approved retailers, you can read the HMPPS Incentives Policy, Annex F .

To send a book to a prisoner at HMP Wymott, the prisoner will submit an application form to the Operations team, this will then be approved and the prisoner will be informed. The prisoner will then inform their loved ones that the book can be sent in.

By waiting for the reply this will ensure that the staff at the gate have prior knowledge of any parcels being sent resulting in them being accepted.

Please note staff on the gate need to have prior knowledge of items being sent.

Prisoners can order books directly from the approved suppliers as outlined in Annex F.

Life at Wymott

Wymott is committed to providing a safe and educational environment where prisoners can learn new skills to help them on release.

Security and safeguarding

Every person at Wymott has a right to feel safe. The staff are responsible for their safeguarding and welfare at all times.

Arrival and first night

When a prisoner first arrives at Wymott, they will be able to contact a family member by phone. This could be quite late in the evening, depending on the time they arrive.

Induction and first night interview is conducted on arrival at Wymott. All prisoners are screened by healthcare professionals and provided with an induction pack.

Each person who arrives at Wymott gets an induction that lasts about a week. They will meet professionals who will help them with:

• health and wellbeing, including mental and sexual health
• any substance misuse issues, including drugs and alcohol
• personal development in custody and on release, including skills, education and training
• other support (sometimes called ‘interventions’), such as managing difficult emotions

Everyone also finds out about the rules, fire safety, and how things like calls and visits work.

Accommodation

Over 1,100 prisoners are housed at Wymott across 11 units. Six of those units are reserved for men convicted of a sex offence.

Facilities include a sports hall, exercise equipment, weight room, assault course and outdoor sports field. There is a full programme of activities for all fitness levels.

Wymott has a diverse, multi-faith chaplaincy team providing support to all prisoners.

Education and work

HMP Wymott and Novus work in partnership to offer skills and qualifications to enable prisoners to gain employment and have a positive role in society. Employability and vocational training is accessible alongside functional English and Maths pass to level 2.

Prisoners have access to a broad range of vocational training, including engineering, welding, painting and decorating, bricklaying, joinery, industrial cleaning, fork lift truck driving, horticulture and catering. Each course can lead to an official qualification.

They can take classroom courses in subjects such as literacy and numeracy, IT, art and design, cookery, accountancy and history.

Wymott also runs a number of accredited offending behaviour programme courses.

VPs (vulnerable prisoners) can work at Wymott in occupations such as tailoring, laundry, welding, waste management, printing, retail, catering and horticulture.

Social Visits

• No more than 4 social visitors per table, inclusive of:
• Minimum of 1 adult and up to 3 children. OR
• Maximum of 2 adults and up to 2 children.
• No more than 3 Adults permitted for an E-Visit.
• There is no limit on the number of children permitted for an E-Visit.

Book and plan your visit to Hewell

To visit someone in Hewell you must:

• be on that person’s visitor list
• book your visit in advance
• have the required ID with you when you go

At least one visitor must be 18 or older at every visit.

There is a limit to the number of visits a prisoner can have which varies by prisoner. You can check this with Hewell.

Getting to Hewell

Find Hewell on a map

Hewell is about 3 miles from Redditch station, where you can catch a local bus to Tardebigge. The bus drops you off about a mile from the prison. Alternatively, you can take a taxi.

To plan your journey by public transport:

There is a visitors car park outside the prison, including space for Blue Badge holders.

Entering Hewell

All visitors, aged 16 or older must prove their identity before entering the prison. Read the list of acceptable forms of ID when visiting a prison .

All visitors will need to be given a pat-down search, including children. You may also be sniffed by security dogs.

Hewell has a family-friendly dress code policy which means visitors should dress appropriately. You may be turned away if you are wearing see-through or revealing clothing like vests, low-cut tops or high-cut shorts or dresses. Additionally, you cannot wear hoodies or anything with offensive patterns or slogans.

Each adult visitor is allowed to take in a maximum of £20 in coins (notes are not allowed). The money can be used to buy food and drink from the snack bar in the visiting hall.

There are strict controls on what you can take into Hewell. You will have to leave most of the things you have with you in a locker or with security. This includes pushchairs and car seats. A pushchair can be provided by Hewell if required.

You will be told the rules by an officer at the start of your visit. If you break the rules, your visit could be cancelled and you could be banned from visiting again.

Visiting facilities

There is a visitors centre run by Barnardo’s. Family and friends can relax, buy refreshments and get advice and support from the staff.

The centre includes a play area for children.

The centre is open Monday to Saturday from 8am to 5pm and on Sunday from midday to 5pm.

There are currently no family days being run.

There are several ways you can keep in touch with someone during their time at Hewell.

Secure video calls

To have a secure video call with someone in this prison you need to:

• Register all visitors
• Add the prisoner to your contact list.

You will receive a notification if a prisoner has requested a video call with you.

Phone calls

Prisoners do not have phones in their cells so they will always have to call you. They have to buy phone credits to do this.

They can phone anyone named on their list of friends and family. This list is checked by security when they first arrive so it may take a few days before they are able to call.

You can also exchange voicemails using the Prison Voicemail service .

Officers may listen to phone calls as a way of preventing crime and helping keep people safe.

You can send emails to someone in Hewell using the Email a Prisoner service .

You might also be able to attach photos and receive replies, depending on the rules at Hewell.

You can write at any time.

Include the person’s name and prisoner number on the envelope.

If you do not know their prisoner number, contact Hewell .

All post, apart from legal letters, will be opened and checked by officers.

Send money and gifts

You can use the free and fast online service to send money to someone in prison .

You can no longer send money by bank transfer, cheque, postal order or send cash by post.

If you cannot use the online service, you may be able to apply for an exemption - for example if you:

• are unable to use a computer, a smart phone or the internet
• do not have a debit card

This will allow you to send money by post.

Gifts and parcels

Prisoners can apply to the governor for permission to receive a parcel of clothing when they first arrive at Hewell. Otherwise, property is generally not permitted to be posted or handed in. You can send prisoners money instead which they can use to buy items through a catalogue system.

Friends and families of prisoners are permitted to send books directly to their loved ones, or can order books from approved retailers, which can source and send the books on to prisoners.

Life at Hewell

Hewell is committed to providing a safe and educational environment where prisoners can learn new skills to help them on release.

Security and safeguarding

Every prisoner at Hewell has a right to feel safe. The staff are responsible for their safeguarding and welfare at all times.

Arrival and first night

When someone first arrives at Hewell, they will be able to contact a family member by phone. This could be quite late in the evening, depending on the time they arrive.

They will get to speak to someone who will check how they’re feeling and ask about any immediate health and wellbeing needs.

Each prisoner who arrives at Hewell gets an induction that lasts about a week. They will meet professionals who will help them with:

• health and wellbeing, including mental and sexual health
• any substance misuse issues, including drugs and alcohol
• personal development in custody and on release, including skills, education and training
• other support (sometimes called ‘interventions’), such as managing difficult emotions

Everyone also finds out about the rules, fire safety, and how things like calls and visits work.

Accommodation

Over 1,000 prisoners live at Hewell across 6 house blocks.

Facilities include a library and gym.

Hewell has a diverse, multi-faith chaplaincy team providing support to prisoners.

Education and work

Prisoners have access to a broad programme of classes, training and work.

The education and training is provided by Novus . A wide range of accredited courses are offered, including English, maths, painting and decorating and tiling.

Work opportunities include the bike workshop, double glazing, kitchen, laundry, recycling, refuse collection, cleaners, painters and orderlies in various locations.
