Travel Map

A lot of visitors are puzzled when landing in Iceland, because the airport is located in a part of the country that looks like an arctic desert with lava rocks, moss and mountains. 45 minutes later you find yourself in Reykjavik, a charming and vibrant town with lots of restaurants, museums and shops on narrow streets.

Embarkation from 16:00 hours.

One of Iceland’s best-kept secrets is the Westfjords. Ísafjörður is the largest town, with a centuries-old history as a major centre of commerce and trading, all based on fish. We invite you to take a stroll around to see its architecture or join our wide range of optional excursions.

The Hornbjarg cliff is one of the greatest seafowl habitats, and we will take a closer look, and hopefully make a landing.

Siglufjörður offers facilities for both recreation and sightseeing. A few hours in the rugged landscape give you the chance to savour the peace and tranquillity. Grímsey is where the Arctic Circle touches Iceland, and we will use our Polarcirkel boats to reach this island.

Akureyri is a lively and energetic town. It is the most populated community outside the Reykjavík area and the centre of trade, culture and services for the north of Iceland. Akureyri is close to many of Iceland’s most renowned natural beauty spots and the town itself is a popular destination. Enjoy an optional hike or join an excursion to the impressive Goðafoss waterfall.

On the east coast you will find pine forests, lush farmlands and a variety of colourful fishing villages and vibrant seaside communities. The Vatnajökull glacier is the largest glacier of Europe and a spectacular sight. From Djúpivogur you can join our optional excursion to Vatnajökull lagoon, or stay and hike in the beautiful surroundings of town.

Our voyage of discovery and adventure ends in Reykjavik. If you have the time, join our exciting post programme Golden Circle and Blue Lagoon.

Tour operator, hurtigruten.

The coastline between Bergen and Kirkenes is over 1,490 miles long, and in the 19th Century almost all of it was home to rich fishing grounds. The maritime maps were unreliable and there were only a few lighthouses, especially in the north. This important seaway was lined with perilous reefs, small islands and narrow inlets, and it was essential that a safe trade route be established to link the southern and northern regions of Norway.

When the Norwegian government decided to create a connection between the north and the south, Richard With and his friend Anders Holthe took on the challenge of thoroughly mapping the seas along the coastline. In 1893, Captain Richard With’s steamer, DS Vesteraalen, was brought into regular service along the coast of Norway, and Hurtigruten was established. The service offered several weekly departures, first from Trondheim to Hammerfest and later from Bergen to Kirkenes in only seven days. He called this important connection ‘Hurtigruten’ (the fast route).

120 years later, we still carry freight and passengers. Our captains use their extensive maritime expertise to ensure that guests and goods are safely carried from port to port. Today, as then, the Hurtigruten ships are a part of Norwegian coastal life. One of the fleet’s 11 ships departs Bergen daily, sailing to Kirkenes and back in 12 days at an average speed of 15 knots.

Hurtigruten's Ships

Hurtigruten ships have been a staple along the Norwegian coast since 1893. The current fleet consists of classic ships, ships built in the late nineties, and ships built after the millennium.

Many boast of their “ultimate” expedition ships. But none, save the MS Fram, contains two critical features which deliver adventure in a more safe and comfortable way. MS Fram is a purpose-build expedition ship built especially for comfortable Explorer voyages, with emphasis on relaxation and discovery.

MS Fram was built in 2007 with one mission in mind - to bring her guests closer to nature, wildlife and unforgettable experiences. As well as offering numerous lounges in which to relax, our more active guests can use our well-equipped gym. Meanwhile, on deck, our Jacuzzis guarantee you surreal memories when passing the towering icebergs of Antarctica or Greenland.

Iceland & Greenland – Arctic Expedition Cruise under the Midnight Sun

hurtigruten iceland cruise reviews

The land of fire and ice

Your adventure begins in Reykjavík, where you’ll start your circumnavigation of remarkable Iceland. From Stykkishólmur, gateway to spectacular Snæfellsnes Peninsula, across the Arctic Circle at Grímsey Island and continuing to Heimaey, you’ll discover volcanic scenery, majestic glaciers and iconic wildlife like beluga whales and Atlantic Puffins.

Spectacular west Greenland

Returning to Reykjavík, you’ll cross the Denmark Strait towards the picturesque west coast of Greenland. From Qaqortoq to Vaigat Sound, you’ll discover ancient cultures and traditions, breathtaking fjords and glaciers, and wildlife like musk oxen and White-tailed Eagles. You’ll also experience a UNESCO wonder and the marvellous Midnight Sun.

Cosmopolitan Reykjavík

1 June 2024

Discover Iceland's modern capital

Your expedition cruise of Iceland and Greenland starts in Reykjavík – a vibrant city full of culture and history. Enjoy a walk around this compact city. Take a stroll down Laugavegur – the main shopping street – to the striking Hallgrímskirkja church. Or why not visit one of its many art galleries and museums.

With so much to explore, you may want to arrive early to join one of our optional Pre-Programmes..

The adventure at sea starts when you board the ship. Find your cabin, meet your Expedition Team, explore the ship and enjoy a relaxed welcome dinner as we set sail towards our first stop, Stykkishólmur.

Snæfellsnes peninsula

2 June 2024

Gateway to spectacular Snæfellsnes

It's as though time has stood still at Stykkishólmur, the small fishing town in Breiðafjörður bay, where colourful houses stand out in contrast to distant mountains.

Nearby, you’ll find Snæfellsnes Peninsula National Park, with the striking, ice-capped Snæfellsjökull volcano at the peninsula’s western tip. It’s nicknamed 'Little Iceland' for its array of landscapes.

At the national park you can visit Djúpalónssandur's black sand beach and the Lóndrangar basalt cliffs. Or why not ride a snowcat to the top of the Snæfellsjökull glacier or take a guided coastal hike with a glacial cave tour.

Beautiful Patreksfjörður

3 June 2024

Birdwatching, waterfalls and stunning beaches

Patreksfjörður is unforgettably beautiful. Here, you’ll learn all about the fishing traditions in Europe's most westerly village. You can even enjoy a dip in the town's outdoor pool, with wonderful fjord views!

You'll have the opportunity to explore the surrounding area on a hike through the fjords, or visit Rauðasandur beach and see seals. You can also join a tour to the Dynjandi waterfalls – six falls combined that together make the largest and most spectacular cascade in the Westfjords.

Birdwatchers shouldn’t miss a visit to Látrabjarg, where puffins, Northern Gannets, guillemots and razorbills cling to Europe’s largest bird cliff.

The Northwestern Region

4 June 2024

Exploring Northwest Iceland, expedition-style

One of the best things about expedition cruising is the feeling of freedom. We plan to spend the day in Iceland’s Northwestern Region, but as conditions can vary, there's no preset plan. Rest assured, your Captain and Expedition Team will find the best opportunities for adventure.

We may take you ashore in our small expedition boats for a hike or a beach clean-up. Or perhaps we’ll launch our kayaks. If we spot a pod of whales as we sail, we may stop to enjoy the sight. Be ready for anything!

Don’t forget, you can also join onboard lectures, visit the Science Center, get tips from our professional photographer, or soak in a hot tub!

Akureyri and Goðafoss

5 June 2024

See dramatic moonscapes and waterfalls

Gaze at snowcapped peaks as we cruise along Eyjafjörður, Iceland's longest fjord. It's one of the best places in Europe to spot humpback whales, white-beaked dolphins and harbour porpoises. Look out for orcas, blue and fin whales here, too.

Iceland’s 'Northern Capital’, Akureyri, sits at the fjord head. Here, you can enjoy the oasis of a botanical garden, and visit top-notch eateries and museums.

A little further afield, you can witness the picturesque Goðafoss waterfall, where turquoise waters pound against black rocks. You can also keep an eye out for Eider and Harlequin Ducks at Lake Mývatn, one of Iceland's more active volcanic areas.

Grímsey’s puffins

6 June 2024

Cross the Arctic Circle and see Atlantic Puffins

This remote and windswept island, home to just 60 people, is well known for its Atlantic Puffin colonies. Grímsey is steeped in folklore, including tales of the island’s first settler, Grímur.

Grímsey is probably best known for its proximity to the Arctic Circle, which cuts across the island – the only part of Iceland where it does so. You’ll have the opportunity to step across that line, hopping over to the Arctic and back!

Hike to the Orbis et Globus landmark, a huge concrete sphere sculpture that’s repositioned each year to fit the northward movement of the Arctic Circle. By 2050, Grímsey will lie outside the Arctic

Hike in Bakkagerði

7 June 2024

Local folklore and staggering natural beauty

Your cruise continues to Bakkagerði, a tiny, remote settlement.  According to folklore, Bakkagerði is inhabited by a large population of local land spirits or elves, known as huldufólk, meaning 'hidden people'. Walk around town to explore this magical place.

A popular hiking  area, here you can walk through lush, green valleys and gorgeous scenery among colourful rhyolite rocks. The coastal cliffs are home to fulmars, kittiwakes, eiders and puffins. We may also visit the Atlantic Puffin colony on Hafnarhólmi – a true gem for nature lovers and wildlife photographers.

Heimaey's explosive past

8 June 2024

Discover the town that defied a volcano

Heimaey is the only inhabited island in the Westman Islands, found off the south coast of Iceland. It has a fascinating history, and still bears the scars of a powerful volcanic eruption that nearly destroyed the island.

Visit Eldheimar, a museum that features an excavated home frozen in time, and learn more about the eruption and its aftermath. Or why not take a hike to seek out puffins at Stórhöfði, where around eight million nest every summer. Don’t miss climbing Mount Eldfell – at the volcano’s summit you’ll have incredible views of the town below.

Rest in Reykjavík

9 June 2024

Enjoy an outdoor spa experience at the Blue Lagoon

Returning to Reykjavík, you’ll have another opportunity to explore the delights you may have missed on your first visit. In this city of art and culture, there are plenty of galleries and museums to enjoy. Or if you simply wish to relax, why not take a trip to the famous Blue Lagoon.

Enjoy an unforgettable outdoor spa experience as you relax in the geothermally heated water that gets its iconic bright blue colour from silica and other minerals carried down from the volcanic landscape. As you soak, enjoy a drink and a chat with locals and fellow guests as you look forward to the next step on your adventure – Greenland!

Crossing the Denmark Strait

10 June 2024 - 11 June 2024

In the wake of Vikings

We sail to Greenland across the Denmark Strait, the route taken by Erik the Red, supposedly the first European to have settled there.

Your Expedition Team will explain the protocols of respectfully visiting wildlife habitats and indigenous Arctic communities. In the Science Center, you can learn more about Greenland's geology, or join one of our Citizen Science projects. Then hit the gym, swim in the infinity pool, book a treatment in the wellness area or enjoy a delicious meal in one of our three onboard restaurants.

Culture and history in Qaqortoq

12 June 2024

Visit one of Greenland's most beautiful towns

Qaqortoq has been settled since prehistoric times. The colourful houses and lush scenery of Qaqortoq provide a beautiful setting in which to discover its rich culture.

Explore the local museum, with its rare Inuit artifacts, or enjoy the beautiful green scenery on a walk to a nearby lake. Join an optional excursion to meet friendly locals and hear their stories at a traditional kaffemik social gathering.

Explorating Kvanefjord

13 June 2024

Discover the glacial beauty of the west coast fjords

Experience your first sight of Greenland’s sublime west coast fjords as we reach Kvanefjord in Sermersooq, meaning 'Place of Much Ice'.

Have your camera ready for glistening icebergs and semi-submerged glacial ice – pure white with undertones of crystalline blue. These sculpted ice blocks are some of Arctic nature’s finest creations.

Few people venture into this remote fjord, making it even more special to spend the day exploring here. The Expedition Team will select places to venture ashore and enjoy the beautiful scenery on a nature walk, or head out in boats to scout for wildlife.

Fascinating Maniitsoq

14 June 2024

A historic trading post in a dramatic setting

Today our expedition cruise reaches Maniitsoq. Nicknamed the 'Venice of Greenland' for its natural canals, the surrounding mountains deliver awe-inspiring views. You might even spot pods of humpback whales from shore.

Once a regional hub for trading reindeer hides, people have lived here for 4,000 years. Discover figurines carved from walrus ivory, traditional Greenlandic costumes and many works of art in the local museum.

Maniitsoq has many hiking options with different viewpoints to discover. And don’t miss an opportunity to chat to the town's welcoming locals.

Spectacular Sisimiut

15 June 2024

Enjoy a warm welcome in Arctic Greenland

We reach spectacularly situated Sisimiut, just 25 miles north of the Arctic Circle, where you'll experience the Midnight Sun at the height of summer.

Old traditions are alive and well here, and you can learn more about the ancient Saqqaq artifacts in the local museum. If you're looking for a special souvenir, pick up a scarf, hat or mittens made of qiviut, the inner wool of a musk ox, said to be 10 times warmer than sheep wool.

One of the best things you'll experience is meeting the local communities in the places we explore – authentic interactions that make for fantastic memories.

UNESCO-listed Ilulissat Icefjord

16 June 2024

Nature's artwork in UNESCO-listed icefjord

Today we reach Disko Bay – a haven for whales and seals. The Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, regularly tops the list of things to see and do in Greenland, and today you'll find out why. Enjoy breathtaking scenery as you walk to the ice fjord and the old Inuit settlement of Sermermiut.

Marvel at giant icebergs floating past in the deep blue waters, as they take on different hues of white, grey and blue. Even amateur photographers will return to the ship with the most enviable images. Back in pretty Ilulissat, perhaps enjoy a hot drink among the colourful houses by the water.

Go wild in Vaigat Sound

17 June 2024

Remote, untamed landscapes and bountiful nature

Rugged Vaigat Sound is our most northerly point, and you'll feel like the first person to walk here. We're in the hands of Mother Nature today and the Expedition Team will identify the best landing sites to explore.

If possible, we'll take the expedition boats out on shore landings, or go on optional kayaking trips between icebergs. You may visit Camp Frieda, trek across tundra and get up close to a glacier and learn how it moves.

Have your binoculars and camera ready as wildlife sightings in Disko Bay can include orcas and bowhead whales, as well as harp, hooded, bearded and ringed seals.

Beguiling Evighedsfjord

18 June 2024

The ethereal beauty of Evighedsfjord

We are now heading back south. You'll enjoy an exploration day in magical yet imposing Evighedsfjord near Kangerlussuaq. We'll determine on the day what exciting adventures lie in store for you.

The 'Fjord of Eternity' is fed by an ice cap that calves huge icebergs into its 2,300 ft  deep waters. It's surrounded by mist-cloaked mountains with beautiful white ridges, punctuated by crystal blue ice caves.

Nature reigns here. The only settlements in this region are tiny fishing hamlets clinging to the shores. As ever, we'll be on the lookout for Arctic flora, and wildlife including whales and seabirds.

Nuuk, Greenland's capital

19 June 2024

Experience Greenlandic culture, old and new, in Nuuk

After several days exploring remote, idyllic icescapes, you'll cruise into Nuuk, Greenland’s colourful capital. With a population of 18,000, it has a striking mix of old and new buildings.

Compare the old buildings – such as Hans Egede House and Nuuk Cathedral – with the ultra-modern architecture of the Parlaiment of Greenland building.

Visit the national museum to gain fascinating insight into life here 500 years ago and see the six Qilakitsoq mummies. Or, join a long nature walk through Paradise Valley and around Mt. Lille Malene as part of an optional excursion.

Forgotten town

20 June 2024

I vittuut's fascinating WWII history

As you wander around the abandoned ruins of this ghost town, it’s hard to believe that Ivittuut, a former mining outpost, once played a pivotal role in the course of history.

During WWII, the US secretly stationed troops here to prevent rare cryolite – used to make aluminum alloys – falling into enemy hands. Supplies were instead shipped to the UK to manufacture aircraft, used in the Battle of Britain.

Here, you can walk among the area's deserted buildings. Once the last Viking settlement in Greenland, these days the only inhabitants you’re likely to see are musk oxen.

Prince Christian Sound

21 June 2024

Breathtaking panoramas and abundant wildlife

We aim to explore the incredible waters of the 60-mile-long Prince Christian Sound today. Sharp-peaked granite mountains provide a stunning contrast to the bright white glaciers. Look out for calving icebergs and colourful houses in the village of Aappilattoq.

Nature is abundant here. Keep an eye out for ringed and bearded seals resting on the ice, and Glaucous Gulls and Black Guillemots soaring above. You may even spot minke and humpback whales.

If sea ice prevents us entering the sound, we'll head to craggy Cape Farewell, the southernmost point of Greenland

Reflections of Greenland

22 June 2024 - 23 June 2024

Time to rest, relax and reflect

A fter exploring the ethereal, rugged beauty of western Greenland, we set our course back to Iceland. You'll enjoy two days at sea recapping highlights with the Expedition Team, learning more about the delicate ecology of Greenland in the Science Center, and relaxing.

Out on deck, you might spot seabirds or whales that like to follow our ship. Our onboard photographer can share tips to capture them in action. You can even log any whales you see for our Happywhale Citizen Science project.

This might be the time to enjoy the panoramic sauna, on-deck hot tubs or heated pool. Or why not book a treatment in our wellness area.

Should I book with Hurtigruten? My wife and I completed our first cruise with Hurtigruten this year. 14-day package which included flights, Hotels, tours, transfers, and a 12-night cruise stopping at 13 ports. Storm Ingunn hit during our cruise and we only managed to make 5 stops when the cruise was cancelled. Cost us £4.468.00p for the package. Was a battle to get the money back from Hurtigruten for the excursions we booked which they did not provide (over £1000). We were only offered £1787.00p compensation for the 8 ports/7 days of the package (+ a tour of Oslo) which was not provided. The most shocking statement from Hurtigruten was to remind us that our cruise cancellation fell under “force majeure” (an act of God) and they are not obliged to offer any refund. So my wife and I should be grateful that this company who always (we quote) “place our guest's preferences and needs at the forefront of our decisions” was kind enough to make an offer of a refund after we lost 60% of our cruise. If your cruise is completed in full then it will probably be great, but if you think anything could go wrong on your cruise then we advise you not to book with Hurtigruten, it's cash not customers at the forefront of their decisions.

After doing the coastal cruise last…

After doing the coastal cruise last year of which the onboard experience was second to none, we decided to book the Svalbard Excursion, a cruise / expedition costing £15000. Booking direct with Hurtigruten was our first mistake. Last time we booked via Hays Travel who were fantastic. The whole customer service experience is flawed & the payment system is diabolical - The payment portal link is broken, [+ parts of the website down]. This forces you to speak to an agent who then sends you a payment link. The problem according to my bank, who this morning are launching a fraud investigation after freezing my account, this link is unsolicited and directs you to a third party App which then requests full access to your bank account to withdraw the funds, but with full open access, in fact it could withdraw the total account sum. At this point, the bank declined the access preventing the payment. In this day and age it is not acceptable to behave in this way and need to ensure customer payment security is guaranteed.

Cruise Cancelled

We initially booked on a Black Friday deal for a total cost of around £14000 Excited for our travels we were told our cruise was cancelled due to the sheep no longer being in use in Antarctica and we’d need a refund or to rebook We rung and were offered to rebook on a nicer ship, same dates at THE SAME COST A few weeks later we were again contacted to say they couldn’t honour this price, despite offering it to us It has ended in us getting a refund (not currently received) having got our hopes up and ruining what would have been a trip of a life time Overall, I hope the company will improve its service in the future and honour prices it is offering, but currently I wouldn’t trust a word the company says as it’s left us and many other customers very disappointed

Hurtigruten cancelled our cruise…

Hurtigruten cancelled our cruise Rebranding has been a failure. Two customer service reps stated our flights would be reimbursed. Next they insisted we go though insurance and would reconsider paying reimbursement after denied. Update on my quest for flight reimbursement. Last I heard from Hurtigruten they wanted me to submit a claim to insurance for unused flights for a cruise they cancelled due to redeployment of ships. They indicated if denied they would reconsider their policy for reimbursement. Sounds reasonable? To all the people who said that’s what’s insurance if for, how many have filed a claim for a cancelled cruise by the company and you were seeking reimbursement for flight connected with that cancelled cruise? Next collected necessary paperwork including cancellation letter from Hurtigruten. FYI the only written communication from the company didn’t specify which cruises were cancelled - the insurance company asked that question. Next, attempt to obtain confirmation that our specific cruise was cancelled. Waiting for the next barrier to appear.

Broken promises

Initially our expedition was cancelled and then I rung the company for the second time after they had been caught lying to numerous customers. After the call handler spoke to their team leader I got a call back to say I was out on Fram and price matched and it was all sorted. This was about 2 weeks ago. I was about ready to alter my review below on this company after they agreed to price match but then they broke this promise after a cabin was allocated. The exact quote was ‘this request was denied by our revenue department’. This had been approved by a team leader. What a cowboy company. My dream trip might be cancelled but I won’t have to deal with this shambles anymore. They should be ashamed of themselves. Do yourselves a favour and book with a company that values their customers. Take note of how low average review is for this company… it’s for a good reason.

Spammers. I have no idea how they got hold of my email address but I am being spammed 4-5 times a week by them. I've unsubscribed and blocked them as spam but they still email using different emails.

Perfect expedition to Antartica

I can't understand why there are so many bad reviews here. I am right now writing this review from a trip in Antartica! It's awesome, great internet, landings and cruising every day, this is so well organized expedition, I love it!

Customer satisfaction means nothing…

We are staying in a disabled room that is right near the outer door to the car deck. The boat stops every 2-4 hours through the night at the small ports and each time the door opens it makes huge noises and shaked the wall of the cabin. After 3 nights of no sleep I asked the guest services if we could be moved. I was informed the door was meant to be fixed in Bergen but wasn't. The cree and other guests were also complaining but there was nothing they could do! They mentioned that the rooms should not have been used but the boat was overbooked and they had no choice. As a paying customer this is unacceptable. Taking money, putting guests into a room the company knows is unacceptable and purposely making the trip a nightmare for your customer.

Hurtigruten charge a ridiculous amount…

Hurtigruten charge a ridiculous amount for excursions eg we went on a coach for 40 mins and back to Nordkapp where there is no entry charge. Cost £210 each!!!! Wine costs £60 a bottle for those you can buy for £7 in an English supermarket! Beer too! Absolute rip off!! Don’t even consider it!

They don't care

When things go right, the trip is lovely. When they're to blame, you're on your own. The views are beautiful, the boats are somewhat on time, when not being cancelled like ours. But the moment they have your money, you're just a number to them, especially when it comes to owed refunds. Disjointed, no communication on the back end, and it's the guest experience that suffers for it. It's like they're hoping that through ineptitude, ignoring emails, and passing you round to different email addresses, that you'll give in and stop following up for your refund. Ask for a phone number to call, or the name of their alternative dispute resolution provider and they'll ignore you for a week - then ask a question you answered months ago. They don't care. They just wat your money, then you barely exist to them.

Shambles of a company

We are still waiting for a refund of pre-booked excursions on a cruise in November (over two months ago) that did not take place because the ship was unable to land passengers. The crew and expedition team on the ship were lovely but the company they work for is dreadful.

2 excellent voyages with Hurtigruten

Just back from an excellent expedition around Svalbard with Hurtigruten. Well organised with a skillful Expedition Team ensuring safe shore and ice landings, and amazing kayaking in sea ice. Crew went the extra mile looking out for polarbears and northern lights (and smooth waters!) Great food, warm and comfortable cabins. Loved it, booking our next trip this weekend. Have also been on the Norweigan Coastal ferry journey, loved that too. Quite different, the ferry purpose comes first but also great excursions and fabulous food, comfortable and clean cabins.

Just completed Bergen- Kirkenes- Bergen on MS Nordnorge. Have to say it was a great experience and delivered on its promises. There was an initial problem using the web site and ended up going through a travel agent. However, this should not take away the level of service from a happy crew, the catering which was wonderful and the overall smoothness of the operation from airport to ship and back again. The scenery is majestic and should be seen. Lucky enough to see the Northern Lights. This is a working ship with, if you like, a hotel plonked on top of it. Excellent and will consider another trip at some time

Hurtigruten are a fantastic company

Hurtigruten are a fantastic company. We did the 12 day coastal trip, Bergen- Kirkenes- Bergen, it was the experience of a lifetime. Booking direct with Hurtigruten was very easy, their customer service is wonderful. Ship was fabulous, ģreat staff, great cabin, great food. Please note though this is not a cruise, it's a ferry with wonderful benefits. Don't book with Hurtigruten thinking you're going to get fitness classes and Vegas style entertainment, thank goodness, this trip is about the scenery, the country and it's traditions, wonderful excursions and meeting like minded people and it's brilliant.

Booked a ferry to leave from Ålesund to Bergen at 1:20am. Booking process was a bit outdated, needing to call up separately to get our bikes on board. What was very frustrating was not being able to find the ferry port without help from some friendly locals. No signs, Google maps had the wrong location and no ticket desk etc. This was especially annoying considering the departure time. No information about where to board on the ticket, tried to call customer services and they were closed.

Review: MS Fridtjof Nansen

Reviewed by Karen Gardiner

What is the line? Hurtigruten Expeditions

Name of ship? MS Fridtjof Nansen

Passenger occupancy? 530

Itinerary? Disko Bay: The heart of Greenland

Start out with the big picture—what is this cruise line known for?

In 1893 Hurtigruten first linked northern and southern Norway by steamship. Three years later, the company kicked off expedition cruising when it first ventured to Svalbard. Today, Hurtigruten Expeditions is one of the world’s leading expedition cruise lines that takes adventurous travelers to some of the most remote and thrilling corners of the planet—from Antarctica to Alaska and the Galapagos to West Africa—and even a 93-day “pole-to-pole” itinerary from the High Arctic to Antarctica.

In keeping with this spirit of exploration and adventure, Hurtigruten Expeditions has named several of its ships after Norway’s most celebrated explorers. Fridtjof Nansen was (arguably) the greatest. One of the more enlightened explorers of his era, Nansen not only made the first crossing of Greenland across the ice sheet in 1888, but also was a scientist, diplomat, humanitarian, and Nobel Peace Prize laureate—a combination of adventure, science, and innovation that befits Nansen’s namesake ship.

Tell us about the ship in general.

Custom built in 2020 for the polar waters of the Arctic and Antarctica, MS Fridtjof Nansen and her sister ship MS Roald Amundsen are the world’s first battery-hybrid powered cruise ships and pioneers in Hurtigruten Expeditions’ growing fleet of smaller, more sustainable expedition cruise ships. The ship is powered by four engines and two large battery units, which reduce its fuel consumption by approximately 20 percent and cut CO2 discharge by more than 3,000 tons a year. Following an assessment of 400 ships, Scope ESG Analysis—the leading European provider of environmental, social, and governance analysis—named the Nansen the safest and most sustainable cruise ship in the world.

Hurtigruten Expeditions is known for its industry-leading science and education program—it’s the first and only cruise line with a Chief Scientist and the first cruise line with Science Centers onboard. The Nansen’s Science Center features museum-style exhibits and activity areas giving guests hands-on experiences to complement the lecture program. Guests are also encouraged to participate in the various citizen science projects that run during their expedition.

Who is onboard?

European, North American, and Australian retirees were the typical demographic on my trip, although there were quite a few younger traveling couples, groups of friends, and singles in the mix. Guests were typically an adventurous bunch, likely to swap stories about sailing to Antarctica, backpacking across India, and more.

Describe the cabins.

I stayed in a spacious upper-deck Expedition Suite with a roomy balcony (from where I watched a whale breach below me one evening). My bathroom had a heated floor and the cabin’s mini bar and wine rack were fully stocked with a complimentary first round. All cabins are outside and half have private balconies—aft suites additionally feature private outdoor hot tubs. Throughout the cabins and ship, interior design takes inspiration from Scandinavian nature and makes use of materials such as granite, oak, birch, and wool. The result is a calm, quiet sanctuary where you can relax and watch the landscape slide by or watch streamed and recorded lectures in privacy.

Tell us about the crew.

The crew is international, well-traveled, and a very impressive multi-skilled bunch. An example: One day Ursula, an assistant expedition coordinator, gave a talk about her experience following Nansen’s route across Greenland’s interior. A couple of days later she conducted an Icelandic language lesson in simultaneous English and German. Whether serving dinner or navigating guests around icebergs on a kayaking excursion, everyone is enthusiastic and energetic. While you’ll hear a lot of “madam” and “sir"—especially in restaurants—interactions are always friendly and relaxed.

What food and drink options are available on board?

The ship has three restaurants, as well as a lounge bar and (when sea conditions allow) a pool bar. Meals at top-tier Lindstrøm are included for suite guests (and dinner is available for all other guests at a surcharge, which is worth paying at least once). Lindstrøm is an elegant spot with Scandinavian-influenced decor—think muted colors, lots of natural light from big windows, wood accents, and contemporary artwork. The menu, too, has a Nordic influence as many of the ship’s suppliers are based in Norway. A reindeer carpaccio starter and grilled Greenland halibut were a couple of my favorite dishes.

Bright and always bustling, Aune is the main venue serving a buffet breakfast and lunch and à la carte (and occasional buffet) dinner. Favorites here were a musk ox shepherd's pie and a seafood buffet dinner, which included sushi, sashimi, king crab, and Greenland-sourced caviar and shrimp. I liked that buffet dishes were all presented in small sizes so I could graze without worrying about food waste.

Freidheim is the most relaxed option and, because it's open all afternoon and evening, often the quietest. An eclectic mix of international dishes, street food-style bites, and comfort classics are served here, from tacos to steamed buns and hamburgers. Save room for a blueberry milkshake or chocolate cream waffle.

Continuing the Norwegian theme, the bars offer aquavit tastings as well as an extensive list of Norwegian spirits. Several times during the voyage chefs served samples of Greenlandic dishes on deck, such as caviar, lumpfish roe, kalaalit kaagiat (Greenlandic cake), and musk ox salami sourced during our stop in Nuuk.

Is there a spa on board and is it worth visiting?

While there is no spa as such, the ship’s wellness center offers a small menu of services, including facials and massages. The trip is bookended by two sea days in either direction, which presents an ideal opportunity to visit. I opted for a hot stone massage on the second day of the trip, which got rid of knots lingering from my transatlantic red-eye flight. Opposite the wellness center, you’ll find a small but well-equipped gym. If the three treadmills are busy, you can head up to the top deck’s outdoor running track.

Activities and entertainment

The ship has a swimming pool, sauna, and two hot tubs but you won’t find casinos or movie theaters on board. Activities here lean high-minded rather than frivolous: think in-depth talks on icebergs, climate, and Norse history in the lecture hall and hands-on activities in the science center. More informal evening talks take place in the lounge bar and, on my trip, included traditional Inuit storytelling sessions.

Guests can also sign up to join the Science Boat for a taste of a scientist’s daily life. One afternoon I took part in collecting samples for the Fjord Phyto project. The project studies phytoplankton to better understand how they respond to water temperature changes in the polar regions, providing a key to help mitigate future environmental impacts. My expedition was the first in 2023 to collect samples in the Arctic.

How was the experience for families?

While there were a few younger travelers on board, and a few get-togethers for young explorers, there is not a lot of dedicated family programming. Traveling families should probably save this expedition for when kids are older.

Where did it sail and how were the excursions? Did anything stand out?

The ship sails from Reykjavik, Iceland across the Irminger Sea to southern Greenland then climbs north up the west coast until Disko Bay before heading back south and finishing in Reykjavik. Guests see a lot of the country: the 16-day cruise has the distinction of visiting every municipality in Greenland and—depending on which excursions you choose—all three Greenland UNESCO World Heritage sites.

The itinerary is almost evenly split between nature visits and community visits. On community visit days (to Qaqortoq, Maniitsoq, Sisimiut, Ilulissat, and Nuuk), guests can wander around freely or book optional excursions, which range from having coffee and cake in a local’s home to hiking part of the Arctic Circle Trail. True to its ethos of supporting local communities, Hurtigruten Expeditions partners with local guides for these excursions. I noticed, and appreciated, that cultural experiences are carefully curated to show both traditional and modern Inuit life. One of my favorites was an organized event held at the Katuaq cultural center in the capital, Nuuk, which featured a traditional drummer and mask dancers as well as contemporary pop singers. The event was followed by tastings of traditional dishes such as whale and seal blubber accompanied by beer from a Greenlandic microbrewery.

Expedition days typically consist of two Zodiac excursions in places of astonishing natural beauty. For example, our day in Kvanefjord—which is rarely visited by cruise ships—included a scenic cruise toward a sprawling, shimmering glacier followed by a landing on shore, inhabited only by old graves of Thule people, the ancestors of modern Inuit, dating back hundreds of years.

Are there any stand-out sustainability or green initiatives about this cruise?

As well as pioneering the world’s first hybrid battery electric-powered cruise ships, the company is in the process of converting the rest of its expedition fleet to hybrid battery power and plans to become the world’s first zero-emissions cruise ship by 2030. They’ve also enabled fleet-wide shore-power connectivity to eliminate emissions while in port and were the first cruise company to phase out single-use plastics onboard.

Each day that guests decline housekeeping, the company donates a small amount to the Hurtigruten Foundation, which supports environmental and community projects worldwide, including summer camps and activities for youth in remote Greenlandic villages.

Hurtigruten is a founding member of the Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators (AECO) , which promotes responsible tourism in the Arctic. Attendance at an AECO briefing is required for all guests and information sheets advising environmentally and culturally respectful best practices are displayed around the ship. As well as the basic stuff (leave no trace, don’t harass wildlife, etc.) guests are encouraged to “talk to, not about, the people you meet” and “work against prejudiced attitudes.”

Anything we missed?

While there were no Greenlanders on the team, I was impressed by the collective expertise of the cultural interpreters and historians on the expedition crew. Their in-depth knowledge of Greenland covered everything from its earliest peoples—who arrived more than four thousand years ago—to its contemporary culture and challenges. I particularly enjoyed the talks given by Jimmy, a longtime Danish resident of Greenland, former school principal, and educational consultant for the government of Greenland. His talks on everyday life and teaching in Greenland provided a privileged peek into Greenlandic life. He also provided an introductory lesson in Kalaallisut , the Greenlandic language, which came in handy during our community visits.

As a solo traveler, I also appreciated the efforts made for single cruisers: There were scheduled solo traveler meetups in the lounge bar and a nightly designated solo traveler table at dinner in Aune. From time to time, the company also waives single supplement fees to ensure that a lack of companion doesn’t preclude adventurers from achieving their travel goals

Why is the cruise worth booking?

Greenland’s unique landscape—its sprawling ice sheet means its communities all lie around the coastline, none of which are connected by roads—makes cruising perhaps the best way to visit. This cruise visits a region that is environmentally and socially fragile and, with its commitment to sustainability and responsible, respectful tourism, I felt confident that it tries to do right by the people and places it visits.

Jan Mayen Island cruise port

Region Arctic - Antarctica

Local Time 2024-04-16 22:55

Port Jan Mayen Island cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Jan Mayen Island, Arctic Norway. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Jan Mayen Island is one of Arctic Norway's territories. The island has length of approx 55 km (34 mi) and covers a total area of approx 373 km2 (144 mi2). The island is partly covered by glaciers - around its highest elevation point - Beerenberg volcano (2277 m / 7470 ft). The island is generally uninhabited, with under 50 non-permanent residents.

Jan Mayen is located approx 600 km (370 mi) northeast of Iceland, approx 500 km (310 mi) east of Greenland and approx 1000 km (620 mi) west of North Cape Norway .

The island has two separate parts: bigger (Nord-Jan) and smaller (Sor-Jan) linked by an isthmus (a narrow piece of land) with width of 2,5 km (1,6 mi). The terrain is mountainous, with the highest point being the stratovolcano Beerenberg (located in the north).

The linking isthmus is where are the island's two largest lakes - named Nordlaguna (North Lagoon) and Sorlaguna (South Lagoon). The only inhabitants on Jan Mayen are the stationed personnel working for the Norwegian Army or the Norwegian Meteorological Institute.

Transport to Jan Mayen Island is provided via Lockheed C-130 Hercules military transport aircraft operated by RNoAF (Royal Norwegian Air Force). These planes land on the gravel runway of Jan Mayen airfield. The aircraft fly from Bodo  (Main Air Station, 2 hours away) 8 times per year. Cargo ships visit the island during summer, bringing heavy goods. The ships are anchored as the island has no harbours.

As no commercial airline flies to the island, the only way to get there by air is via a privately chartered airplane.

Since 2010, Jan Mayen Island is designated as a nature reserve (under Norway's jurisdiction) to ensure the preservation of this pristine Arctic island, as well as the marine life in the surrounding waters.

The island is also identified as IBA (Important Bird Area) by BirdLife International as a breeding ground for many seabirds, including little auks, thick-billed and black guillemots, Arctic fulmars.

Jan Mayen Island cruise terminal

Cruise ships to Jan Mayen Island anchor near Boat Bay (Batvika).

Landings on the island can be done only by boat (cruise ship tender boat or Zodiaks / large capacity inflatable boats). Landings are permitted only at small part of Jan Mayen, named Boat Bay (Batvika). Admission for landings has to be obtained in advance.
