How COVID-19 has changed travel insurance

Berjaya sompo, tune protect, why travel insurance is important.

Travel insurance used to be considered as something that involved extra expenses if you have spare cash left over after paying for airline tickets and hotel rooms. For most of us, when it is finally time for that long-awaited overseas vacation or business trip, the last thing you want to think about is things going wrong.

Fast forward to 2022 and with borders opening up around the world, travel insurance is no longer something that you can choose not to buy. In fact, many countries require travellers to have some form of Covid-19 travel insurance, or at the very least pay for their Covid-19 screening and quarantine costs before they are allowed to enter.

The world has made much progress in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there are still some lingering risks, especially with the potential for new waves or strains to pop out of nowhere.

Travellers may find themselves completely stuck if their host country experiences a sudden spike in COVID-19 cases. The pandemic has proven itself to be highly unpredictable. As such, lockdowns can occur in the blink of an eye. Travellers who find themselves stranded in a strange and foreign land will find that travel insurance can help to cover these extra unforeseen costs.

In order to make it simple, we have compiled a list of travel insurance with Covid-19 coverage that Malaysians can buy.

Travel insurance with COVID-19 coverage

AIG travel insurance policies offer a wide range of benefits. For medical coverage, AIG covers hospitalisation expenses incurred up to RM1 million, as well as providing a travel assistance team that is on call to provide emergency help and advice.

Other benefits:

  • Up to RM400,000 paid out if customers suffer from an accidental death or permanent disablement during their trip.
  • Covers transport & accommodation costs due to trip cancellations, as well as extra expenditures as a result of travel inconveniences or natural disasters.
  • If the customer is diagnosed with COVID-19, AIG will provide COVID-19 coverage including medical and emergency evacuation & repatriation expenses up to RM700,000, travel cancellation, travel curtailment and quarantine allowance benefits.

AXA has recently introduced its Smart Traveller Enhanced package to complement its other travel insurance offerings. The package provides the option to add on their Pandemic Cover scheme for overseas trip to cover trip cancellation, trip curtailment, medical, hospital and treatment expenses, hospital allowance, emergency medical evacuation, emergency medical repatriation and repatriation of mortal remains if they are diagnosed with a pandemic illness, especially COVID-19 related cases.

  • Up to RM300,000 in overseas emergency medical, hospital and dental expenses.
  • Hospital Allowances up to RM10,500 (or RM350/day for overseas travel).
  • Compensation for trip delays, cancellations, and curtailments, reimbursements for damaged baggage and trip inconveniences up to RM7,500.
  • Unlimited emergency medical transportation.

SOMPO’s TravelSafe insurance plan is a comprehensive travel insurance that covers customers against any injury, illness, accident, and travel inconvenience during their Trip. The plan is split up into 3 different Elite packages with medical and hospital expense compensation that can range from RM150,000 to RM500,000 depending on the package chosen.

  • All COVID-19 related cases are also covered under the TravelSafe plan.
  • Reimbursements for compassionate visits, child care, hospital allowance, COVID-19 quarantine allowance, and follow-up treatment upon return to Malaysia.
  • Comes bundled with Emergency evacuation and repatriation, along with personal accident coverage.
  • Covers travel inconveniences including loss of baggage, baggage delay, travel delays, re-routings, cancellations, travel curtailment, loss of deposits, missed departures, personal liability, and more.

ETIQA offers 3 unique plans for customers, TripCare 360 (Overseas), SingBorder Travel (For trips to Singapore), and Travel Ezy (Domestic). There is also a Takaful option for each of these packages. Under the TripCare 360 scheme, beneficiaries receive a cashless medical coverage plan allowing for hospital admittance via a letter of guarantee obtainable through a 24/7 hotline.

  • Additional add-on for COVID-19 coverage (areas that are classified as level 4 risk by the CDC will not be covered).
  • Up to RM5,000 for loss or damage to baggage, money, travel documents, and personal belongings.
  • Compensation of up to RM100 for flights that are delayed by no more than 2 hours.
  • Features add-on options for adventurous activities and a 25% rebate when purchasing this plan online.

MSIG TravelRight Plus Insurance is a comprehensive insurance that provides compensation for mishaps and covered events during your journey within the policy period. Customers can opt for a short-term policy for a single trip or an annual policy to cover an unlimited number of trips in a policy year. Depending on the plan chosen, customers can get up to RM500,000 insured on medical expenses. COVID-19 coverage comes in the form of an add-on package.

  • COVID add-on includes up to RM450,000 insured COVID-19 coverage and up to RM500,000 in medical evacuation and repatriation expenses.
  • Up to RM100,000 in terms of follow-up treatment once they have returned to Malaysia.
  • Includes benefits for luggage delays, reimbursement for luggage loss or damages, travel cancellations, curtailments, and delays.
  • Coverage for home damages or losses while customers are away on their trip.

Tune Protect’s Travel Easy COVID Plus Plan is divided into individual and family plans. Under this plan, individuals can get up to RM250,000 insured up to the first 30 days of trip duration, while the family plan can go up to RM750,000 insured. Additionally, the plan also offers a daily quarantine allowance up to RM1,400 in total for individuals and RM4,200 for families.

  • Includes emergency overseas evacuation & repatriation, hospital income, compassionate visit, bereavement allowance, compensation for trip curtailment and trip cancellations.
  • Offers a COVID Lite Plan which includes RM100,00 in medical expenses for the first 30 days of the trip duration (RM300,000 for families).
  • COVID Light Plan includes emergency overseas evacuation & repatriation benefits, but foregoes the other benefits listed within the Plus Plan.
  • Both COVID plans include the basic Travel Easy package benefits, but customers are able to purchase the basic plans separately.

*Basic plans do not include COVID-19 coverage.

Covid-19 aside, we still have to acknowledge that there are plenty of risks involved, ranging from minor to serious.

Here’s why travel insurance should always be considered:

It covers medical emergencies

  • Accidents can happen anywhere, so having the assurance that an insurance company will reimburse part of the cost for emergency medical treatment can help put minds at ease.
  • Common coverage includes death and permanent disablement, hospitalisation, and medical expenses as well as repatriation.

It covers travel risks

  • Travel insurance can also help out with non-medical related emergencies. A fairly common problem that occurs during travel is the loss of a passport or checked-in baggage. These can drain a traveller’s wallet and time if they are not insured.
  • At the very least, travel insurance can offer compensation up to a certain limit should such unfortunate circumstances occur.

It covers trip disruptions

  • Sometimes, problems can occur that are completely out of a traveller’s hands. Trip cancellations are common occurrences. Your travel Insurance can provide coverage for bookings that are cancelled, and in certain policies, provide compensation for entire trip cancellations.
  • Having these risks covered provides a hefty financial safety net.

Whether you are taking a flight overseas, or going on a road trip across the country, it is far better to be safe than sorry.

Malaysia unveils Covid-19 insurance to woo medical tourists

international travel insurance that covers covid 19 malaysia

In a bid to entice more healthcare travellers to the country, Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC) has collaborated with Tune Protect Group to introduce a Covid-19 travel protection plan for foreign nationals seeking medical advice and treatments in private hospitals in Malaysia.

Known as the Covid Travel Pass+, there are two types of plans: the basic and premium plan. The basic plan provides medical expenses and hospitalisation coverage due to Covid-19 of up to RM100,000 (US$23,849); and the premium plan, up to RM350,000. Both plans also come with a bereavement allowance of RM10,000.

Benefits of the travel insurance plan include trip cancellation, flight on arrival delay, loss or damage to checked-in baggage, and Covid-19 diagnosis quarantine allowance (RM350 per day up to RM2,450), among others.

Rohit Nambiar, group CEO, Tune Protect, said in a press release: “Malaysia is recognised for its award-winning healthcare services and with travelling restrictions loosening up, we are expecting the number of healthcare travellers to increase.

“With this, we are pleased to collaborate with MHTC as we believe in going where customers want us to be. The timely collaboration provides convenience and worry-free travel experience for healthcare travellers seeking to access medical treatment and advice here in Malaysia.”

Mohd Daud Mohd Arif, CEO of MHTC, said the launch of the travel insurance plan is part of the council’s strategy “to demonstrate Malaysia’s strengths as a safe and trusted destination, and offer healthcare travellers accessible and affordable protection plans as the country begins to welcome international visitors back to our shores”.

Launched last week by Tune Protect Group, the Covid Travel Pass+ is designed to help foreign travellers entering Langkawi in Malaysia and destinations in Thailand meet the mandatory Covid-19 insurance coverage requirements set by the respective governments – which is a minimum of US$80,000 for Langkawi and US$50,000 for Thailand.

The service is currently available to foreigners flying AirAsia into Langkawi and destinations in Thailand, and will later be rolled out to other destinations.

Eligible travellers can purchase the Covid Travel Pass+ when booking their flight tickets on the AirAsia super app. Post-flight purchase subscription is also available prior to departure.

Many countries are easing their restrictions and gradually re-opening their borders, making it mandatory for inbound visitors to have travel insurance that covers Covid-19-related medical expenses. While the COVID-19 pandemic situation is still ever evolving, many travellers are concerned if they are covered and protected against the pandemic.

To address the increasing protection needs given the anticipated rise in international travels, AXA Affin General Insurance Berhad (AXA) has introduced Smart Traveller Enhanced ̶ the first-in-market travel insurance in Malaysia that provides coverage for pandemic illness up to RM350,000.

Travellers now have the option to add on Pandemic Cover for overseas trip to cover trip cancellation, trip curtailment, medical, hospital and treatment expenses, hospital allowance, emergency medical evacuation, emergency medical repatriation and repatriation of mortal remains if they are diagnosed with a pandemic illness.

Emmanuel Nivet, Chief Executive Officer of AXA emphasised that travel insurance has now become more essential than ever as a safety net that protects against unforeseen emergencies and expenses. With travellers being more mindful of every possible scenario they could encounter, they will prioritise ‘safe travels’ and plan ahead to safeguard their trips for peace of mind.

“Although pandemic exclusion is common in insurance policies, we are glad to pivot quickly with enhanced coverages and be the first in the market to introduce Pandemic Cover for overseas trip with the widest coverage. The plan has received an overwhelming response among travellers since launch and we expect the demand to continue to grow. We are positive that this meaningful coverage will address the protection gap in the market and benefit all travellers,” Emmanuel added.

Besides Pandemic Cover for overseas trip, Smart Traveller Enhanced also comes with other comprehensive coverages such as:

Hospital Allowances - Up to RM10,500 (or RM350/day for overseas travel)

Compensation for Damage to Personal Belongings & Travel Inconveniences – Up to RM7,500

Trip Cancellation & Curtailment – Up to RM20,000

Emergency Medical Evacuation & Repatriation

Malaysia Visitors Insurance and Safety Advice

Malaysia is ranked 9th in the world for receiving the most tourists, according to the United Nations World Tourism Organization . And it’s the smallest country on that top 10 list. But for its small size, it is mighty. It boasts spectacular beaches, islands, national parks, and cities that keep visitors coming back for more. It’s also increasingly popular with Expats, who appreciate an affordable cost of living and easy travel access to neighboring countries. General Travel Safety and Advice When Visiting Malaysia

The majority of travelers who visit Malaysia come home with glowing reports of the country’s beautiful countryside, amazing cities, and delicious food. However, every destination has health and safety concerns, and, in Malaysia, some of those are more pronounced than others.

In particular, most governments have issued a strong travel warning about traveling to the coastal areas of eastern Sabah for fear of kidnapping, piracy, and terrorism. The New Zealand government, for instance, advises: “There is an ongoing risk of kidnapping in coastal areas of eastern Sabah. Terrorist and criminal groups…have in the past kidnapped people from these areas and further kidnappings are likely.”

In major cities, petty crimes like purse snatching aren’t that unusual. Like with any other trip, keep a close eye on personal possessions and minimize your risk with secure, cross-body style bags. Speak with hotel staff or trusted friends about identifying unsafe streets, if applicable.

Traveling with illegal drugs is foolhardy and risky in any region of the world, and especially so in Malaysia. The current government has an extremely aggressive stance on drug use and distribution. The penalties for such crimes are severe and include the death penalty.

Understanding Malaysia’s Health Care System

Malaysia has a two-tier health care system. This means that government-funded, universal health care co-exists with privately funded healthcare options. While the public system is widespread, services may be basic in rural areas. However, healthcare improvements and investments are a government priority. Pilot projects, including delivering prescription medicine by mail, have received favorable reviews. Many rural hospitals and clinics also use a Tele-Care system to connect patients and specialists. Hopefully, as a result, more isolated regions will see improvements. In the meantime, if your travels involve extensive time in rural and isolated areas, inquire about travel insurance policies that include medical evacuation or air ambulance transfers to major cities in the case of an emergency.

A List of the Best Hospitals in Malaysia

In Malaysia’s cities, the private health care system has a very good reputation for access to specialists and leading diagnostic technology. Travelers should inquire about health care insurance that covers private hospital visits, as, in general, they are more comfortable and waits times are shorter.

Emergency Services in Malaysia

In Malaysia, for emergency services:

  • Dial 999 to request an ambulance or police services
  • Dial 994 to connect with a fire department
  • 112 is an alternative emergency service for mobile phone users

The Malaysian government is the main provider of ambulances in the country but there’s not one centralized system for organizing them. For instance, a traveler in need may find themselves in an ambulance run by the Red Cross or a university. As a result, ambulance response times are slower than in many other countries (though the care provided within is good).  It can often be a tough call but travelers in need will have to determine if it’s possible to use alternative transportation, such as a taxi, to reach a hospital more quickly.

Vaccines Required and Health Advice for Malaysian Travel

As with every trip, your routine vaccinations should be up to date. That includes tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, chickenpox, and your yearly influenza vaccine.

The CDC recommends hepatitis A and typhoid vaccines for most travelers. For some travelers, depending on their exact destination and travel plans, hepatitis B, rabies, and Japanese encephalitis may be recommended, as well as malaria prevention.

Travelers coming from countries where yellow fever is a risk are required to show proof of yellow fever vaccination. There is no risk of yellow fever in Malaysia. This is a preventative strategy to make sure travelers who have previously visited high-risk countries don’t bring the disease with them.

Tap water in Malaysia is generally not potable and travelers should stick to bottled or boiled water.

Many countries have a travel advisory for Malaysia because of the Zika virus. Pregnant women, in particular, should speak with their healthcare provider before they travel. While influenza is a concern in many Asian countries, the government of Malaysia has developed a comprehensive National Influenza Pandemic Preparedness Plan (NIPPP)

Medical Tourism in Malaysia

Not all tourists to Malaysia are motivated by surf, sun, and shopping. Medical tourism is a significant part of the Malaysian tourism economy. According to the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC), Malaysia reportedly received 641,000 foreign patients in 2011. While the majority of medical tourism patients are from Indonesia, the percentage from the United States, Canada, and Western Europe is growing. If you’re contemplating visiting Malaysia for the purposes of medical care, take the time to diligently research all of your options. Speak with your home health care team about your plan and reach out to other Expats and patients to learn from their experiences before you finalize your decision.

FAQ About Travel Insurance to Malaysia

Travel insurance typically covers trip cancellation, trip interruption, lost or stolen luggage, travel delay, and emergency evacuation. Some travel insurance packages also cover medical-related incidents too. However, remember that the exact coverage depends on the insurance policy.

No, you'll not be required to take out travel insurance for Malaysia. However, we strongly encourage you to do so anyway, because the cost of healthcare in Malaysia can be high, and taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself if you need medical attention during your stay.

Yes, medical travel insurance is almost always worth it, and we recommend taking out travel insurance whenever visiting a foreign country. Taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself in case you need medical attention during your stay. In general, we recommend VisitorsCoverage to travellers worldwide because it offers excellent value for money and well-rounded travel and medical benefits in its large catalogue of plans.

Health insurance doesn't cover normal holiday expenses, such as coverage for missed flights and hotels, but in case you run into medical trouble while abroad, it may cover some or all of your doctor or hospital expenses while overseas. However, not all health insurance providers and plans offer coverage to customers while abroad, and that's why it's generally best to take out travel insurance whenever you travel.

Although there's overlap, health and travel insurance are not exactly the same. Health insurance covers some or all of the cost of medical expenses (e.g. emergency treatment, doctor's visits, etc.) while travel insurance covers non-medical costs that are commonly associated with travelling (e.g. coverage for missed flights, stolen or lost personal belongings, etc.).

The cost of travel insurance depends on several factors, such as the length of the trip, the destination, the age of the traveller, and the level of coverage desired. On average, travel insurance can cost anywhere between 3% and 10% of the total cost of the trip.

A single-trip travel insurance policy covers a specific trip, while an annual one covers multiple trips taken within a one-year period. An annual policy may be more cost-effective for frequent travellers.

Yes, you can sometimes purchase travel insurance after starting your trip, but it is best to buy it before the trip begins to ensure maximum coverage. If you do need to buy insurance after you've started your trip, we recommend VisitorsCoverage , which offers a wide catalogue of online trip and medical insurance policies, most of which can be booked with immediate effect. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.

Yes, you can most certainly purchase travel insurance for a trip that has already been booked, although we recommend purchasing insurance as soon as possible aftwerwards to ensure all coverage is in place before your journey begins. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.

Is There Travel Insurance That Covers COVID Quarantine?

Carissa Rawson

Many or all of the products featured here are from our partners who compensate us. This influences which products we write about and where and how the product appears on a page. However, this does not influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own. Here is a list of our partners and here's how we make money .

We get it — traveling these days can be an uncomfortable experience. In the ever-changing world of COVID-19 variants, border restrictions and PCR tests, learning how to stay protected is important.

Travel insurance can insure you against a variety of complications during travel, including trip delay, trip cancellation and medical issues. But not all policies are the same, and coverage can vary not only across providers, but across policies themselves.

Let’s take a look at travel insurance that covers COVID-19 quarantine, plus the best COVID-19 travel insurance.

What does travel insurance usually cover?

Travel insurance can provide peace of mind on vacation, especially when things go awry. There are varying types and levels of coverage for travel insurance, though these are common inclusions for travel insurance policies:

Trip cancellation insurance.

Trip interruption insurance.

Trip delay insurance.

24-hour hotline assistance.

Emergency medical insurance.

Primary/secondary medical insurance.

Lost or delayed baggage insurance.

Rental car insurance.

There's a lot of variety when it comes to travel insurance and the types of incidents it’ll cover. The cost of your premium will vary according to the plan you select.

Cancel for Any Reason insurance allows you to cancel your trip and recoup your costs, no matter why you’ve chosen to cancel.

Before buying travel insurance, check to see if any of your credit cards offer trip insurance . Some travel credit cards offer this insurance free of charge when you use your card to pay.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card , for example, provides primary rental car insurance when you charge the car to your card.

The Platinum Card® from American Express , meanwhile, will cover trip cancellation, trip delay and lost luggage insurance. Terms apply.

There are no credit cards whose benefits include medical insurance. You’ll want to read the terms carefully to be sure that any travel insurance you purchase covers instances of COVID-19.

Finding insurance that covers COVID quarantine

In the beginning of the pandemic, many insurance policies covered losses related to COVID-19, including trip cancellation and medical issues.

Since then, some providers have chosen to exclude coverage for coronavirus-related issues. So you’ll need to search specifically for an insurance policy that covers COVID-19.

Fortunately, there are still insurance providers that’ll provide coverage in the event you’re affected by COVID-19, including:

Trip cancellation.

Trip delay.

Medical care/hospitalization.

Quarantine.

Several countries — like Thailand — actually require that you purchase this insurance before traveling.

If you already have an insurance provider in mind, take a look at their coverage options — and any available add-ons — to see if COVID-19 quarantines are covered.

» Learn more: The best travel insurance companies

If you aren’t already committed to an insurance company, sites such as SquareMouth, a NerdWallet partner, will allow you to search for and compare policy coverage from multiple companies at once.

You’ll be asked to provide a variety of information, such as your destination, dates of travel, age, and whether you’d like to be reimbursed for cancellations.

SquareMouth’s search also includes the ability to filter search results so you’ll only see policies with COVID-19 protections.

Once you’ve found a provider whose policy includes COVID-19 coverage, you’ll want to make certain that quarantine will also be reimbursed. Reading the policy in full will tell you; it can look something like this:

How much will COVID quarantine travel insurance cost?

The price of travel insurance is going to depend on many factors, including the length of your trip, your age, your destination and your coverage limits.

As you’d expect, the more comprehensive your coverage and the higher your limits, the more expensive your policy will be. The same is true if you’re heading out of the country for an extended period of time.

When comparing insurance policies, you’ll want to think about coverage limits as well as whether the insurance will provide primary or secondary coverage. Compare these factors against other policies to see which policy is the right fit for you.

Here’s a comparison between two different policies. Although neither of these requires a deductible, one of these is secondary (it pays out after other insurance) and caps out at $15,000 per person in emergency medical expenses.

The other is primary (it pays out before other insurance policies) and covers up to $100,000 per person in emergency medical expenses:

international travel insurance that covers covid 19 malaysia

While $15,000 may seem like a lot of money, remember that this total includes all doctor visits, tests and medications — in addition to the cost of your quarantine stay.

If you’re staying somewhere expensive, those costs can quickly add up.

Although some communities, such as New York City, may provide cost-free isolation accommodation, others will leave you to fend for yourself.

Even if staying in a moderately priced hotel, five to 10 days (or more) of isolation can quickly run into the thousands of dollars. You’ll want to be sure your insurance policy can cover this.

Final thoughts on travel insurance that covers COVID quarantine

Although the world is still trying to grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic, you may be looking to get out and travel again. Being protected in the event something happens can give you peace of mind when away from home.

This is especially true when it comes to mandatory COVID-19 quarantine, when costs can easily pile up. Acquiring travel insurance with COVID-19 quarantine protection can save you — and your wallet — in case of an emergency.

Currency and foreign exchange.

The official currency of Malaysia is the Malaysian ringgit (MYR or RM). It is divided into 100 sen. The ringgit is pegged to a basket of currencies, which includes the US dollar, the Japanese yen, and the Singapore dollar.

The exchange rate between the Malaysian ringgit (MYR) and the Indian rupee (INR) constantly fluctuates. It is approximately 1 MYR = 17.79 INR. This means that 1 Malaysian ringgit can be exchanged for 17.79 Indian rupees.

You can exchange foreign currency at banks, money changers, and some hotels in Malaysia. The exchange rates these institutions offer may vary, so it is best to shop around before making a transaction.

You can check the recent currency exchange rates here.

[Note: If you plan on travelling to Malaysia, it is important to check the exchange rate before you go.]

Best Time to Visit Malaysia

The best time to visit Malaysia depends on what you want to do and see. February to September is the dry season in Malaysia and the best time to visit if you want to avoid the rain. The weather is also pleasant, with average temperatures ranging from 25 to 32 degrees Celsius. This is the ideal time to visit popular tourist destinations such as Kuala Lumpur, Malacca, and Penang.

October to March is the wet season in Malaysia, but it is not as rainy as you might think. The rain usually falls in the afternoon and evening, and the days are often sunny. This is a good time to visit if you want affordable prices and also want to avoid crowds.

You can also book your trip to Malaysia during April to June. This is the shoulder season in Malaysia, and the weather is still pleasant, but the crowds are not as large.

If you plan to visit Malaysia for the beaches, the best time is from March to October, when the weather is dry and sunny. The east coast of Malaysia, which includes the islands of Tioman and Redang, experiences the wet season from November to February.

If you plan to visit Malaysia for the rainforests, the best time to go is from March to May, when the skies are clear and the air is cool. The rainforests are also home to many different species of animals, so this is a good time to go if you want to see wildlife.

Ultimately, the best time to visit Malaysia is when you can make the most of your trip. Consider your interests and budget when making your decision.

If you're looking for travel insurance that allows you to confidently participate in a wide range of sports and adventure activities around the world, then World Nomads Travel Insurance might be right for you. The company's policies cover travel to almost anywhere on the globe and are available to residents of nearly every country.

World Nomads Travel Insurance Review

Among the best international travel insurance companies , World Nomads is particularly good at insuring athletes, covering well over 300 sports, including skydiving, bungee jumping, and golf. World Nomads is also a great last-minute purchase, allowing you to purchase coverage even after your trip has started. However, if you purchase a plan after departure, you will have to wait 72 hours before your plan kicks in.

That said, World Nomads lacks crucial coverage options, such as cancel for any reason coverage and coverage for pre-existing conditions. It also doesn't insure travelers older than 70.

Additionally the service has received middling reviews from customers, averaging 3.4 stars out of five across 2,510 reviews. Customers often complained about their lengthy claims processes and poor customer service.

Some also took issue with the "Nomads" branding, as some travelers with multiple destinations and long-term trips found their trip wasn't covered by Nomads' specific policies. It's worth noting that World Nomads was very responsive to positive and negative reviews on Trustpilot.

World Nomads Plans Available

World Nomads has two basic policies: Standard and Explorer. Each covers essentially the same things, but Explorer has higher amounts that World Nomads is willing to pay out for claims. The company's policies cover more than 150 specific activities. These range from bungee jumping and rock climbing to hang gliding and hot-air ballooning. You can see the full list on the company's website.

Additional Coverage Options (Riders)

One of the most common upgraded features of a travel insurance policy is cancel for any reason (CFAR) , where you really can cancel for reason beyond what's in a standard policy. This is not available on every policy, but it is often a feature that travelers are looking for while shopping for travel insurance before their trip. At this time, World Nomads doesn't offer CFAR coverage.

At the time of this review, World Nomads also offers sports equipment coverage. In February of 2022, it expanded coverage to include more than 150 sports and activities including Pickleball and FootGolf. It currently covers over 300 sports. So, as you can imagine, plans with sports coverage will cover virtually any sport you might play.

World Nomads Travel Insurance Cost

You can obtain a quote from World Nomads on its website by providing details about you and your trip. Be prepared to provide the following information:

  • Your destination(s)
  • Duration of trip
  • Your country of residence
  • State of residence (if you're from the US)
  • Number of travelers
  • Traveler(s) age

Notably, World Nomads does not ask you for the price of the trip, which many travel insurance companies factor into the trip of your policy. As such, World Nomads may be a good option if you're going on a particularly expensive trip.

We ran a few simulations to offer examples of how much a World Nomads policy might cost. You'll see that costs usually fall between 5% and 7% of the total trip cost, depending on the policy tier you choose.

As of April 2024, a 23-year-old from Illinois taking a week-long, $3,000 budget trip to Italy would have the following  World Nomads travel insurance quotes:

  • World Nomads Standard: $76.58
  • World Nomads Explorer: $123.34

Premiums for World Nomads's plans are well below the average cost of travel insurance .

World Nomads provides the following quotes for a 30-year-old traveler from California heading to Japan for two weeks on a $4,000 trip:

  • World Nomads Standard: $85.83
  • World Nomads Explorer: $155.06

Once again, premiums for World Nomads plans are between 2.2% and 3.8%, below the average cost for travel insurance.

A couple of 65-years of age looking to escape New York for Mexico for two weeks with a trip cost of $6,000 would have the following World Nomads quotes:

  • World Nomads Standard: $152.96
  • World Nomads Explorer: $276.34

Premiums for World Nomads plans are between 2.6% and 4.6%, once again below the average cost for travel insurance. This is especially impressive as travel insurance is often more expensive for older travelers.

How to File A Claim with World Nomad Travel Insurance

You can start an insurance claim by filing it on the company's website.

You can call toll-free in the US and Canada if you need to reach the company in an emergency at: (877) 289-0968.

Callers from outside the US and Canada can reach the company at: (954)-334-8143.

Make sure you keep any documents related to the claim you're filing. This includes any receipts, notices, and invoices.

Compare World Nomads Travel Insurance

World Nomads is particularly good at insuring traveling athletes, but let's see how it stacks up against the best travel insurance companies .

World Nomads Travel Insurance vs. Allianz Travel Insurance

Allianz Travel Insurance is a strong competitor against World Nomads, especially for travelers looking for a more business-oriented option. The company has been in business for more than 120 years and offers a wide range of insurance, not just travel-related, around the world.

A key difference between World Nomads and Allianz Travel Insurance is that Allianz Travel Insurance offers travel insurance that can cover multiple trips in the same year. You can take an unlimited number of trips within the same calendar year, but you do have to double-check that all of your destinations are covered by the policy you select.

Another difference is that Allianz Travel Insurance offers pre-existing condition waivers for qualifying customers. World Nomads doesn't have the same coverage, requiring that the pre-existing condition is fully stable in order for limited coverage with respect to trip cancellations or having to end a trip early.

Read our Allianz travel insurance review here.

World Nomads Travel Insurance vs. AIG Travel Guard

Travel Guard , a product backed by AIG Travel, is another potential alternative to World Nomads. AIG is a prominent player in the insurance industry, and the Travel Guard product represents true global coverage.

Unlike World Nomads, Travel Guard has coverage for pre-existing medical conditions, but there are conditions. Travelers must purchase their policy within 15 days of the initial trip payment to qualify for a pre-existing condition waiver.

Both travel insurance companies use a tiered approach, but Travel Guard has higher dollar amounts across the board. For example, trip cancellation for Travel Guard covers 100% of the trip cost, while with World Nomads the amount will depends on the tier of the coverage you purchase. Trip Interruption is also a fully covered event with Travel Guard's. Depending on the plan selected, it will either cover 100% or 150% of the trip cost.

If you're concerned about COVID-19 coverage with trip insurance, there's more coverage with World Nomads than Travel Guard. With Travel Guard, coverage for having to stay in a country past your original booking dates is an add-on, not a standard part of the policy.

Compare World Nomad vs. Credit Card Travel Insurance

If you already have a major credit card in your wallet, you most likely have some travel insurance benefits that come with it. These benefits do vary from card to card. Be sure to check your card's specific policies.

Not all credit cards will feature travel insurance protection. The ones that do may have specific limitations. For example, many credit cards with travel protection require that your airfare is paid for with the card in question for protections to take effect.

Reimbursement isn't guaranteed. The credit cards do require that you file your claim and wait for a decision. World Nomads makes it easy to file a claim online and submit receipts and documentation. The response is fairly quick based on reviews from travelers that have actually had to file claims.

The more premium the credit card, the more likely expanded travel protections are part of its features. If you don't already have a premium credit card, it's better to get travel insurance. This is also the case if you have multiple trips planned. Some credit cards limit not just the total dollar amount, but the number of claims within a 12-month period.

Read our guide on the best credit cards with travel insurance here.

Travel Insurance For Vietnam: Everything You Need To Know

Updated: Apr 26, 2024, 11:14am

Table of Contents

Do australians need travel insurance for vietnam, what does travel insurance for vietnam cover, frequently asked questions (faqs).

Vietnam is an increasingly popular travel destination for Australians, with the country even hoping to encourage more Aussies to visit by potentially waiving visa requirements in due time.

The Southeast Asian country is set to be high on the list for Aussies going overseas in 2024. The number of Australian tourists in Vietnam now exceeds pre-pandemic levels: more than 317,000 Australians visited Vietnam in 2019 , while there were 390,000 Aussie visitors in 2023.

Plus, as more and more flights become available, such as low-cost carrier Vietjet Air launching a direct service between Hanoi and Melbourne earlier this year, getting to Vietnam is becoming easier for Australians.

If the direct flights, fascinating history, vast scenery and delicious food aren’t enough to convince Australian travellers, the cost may be. Vietnam is considered one of the cheapest travel destinations in the world for Australian tourists due to our strong conversion rate against the Vietnamese Dong and the nation’s low cost of living in comparison to our own.

And while cheap thrills may be what you’re after on your vacation, it’s important not to skimp on the necessities that may cost that little bit extra—such as travel insurance. This guide outlines what you need to know regarding travel insurance in Vietnam.

Investing in travel insurance is a good idea for any overseas trip. Travel insurance policies can help protect you from having to dive deep into your pockets, with many offering unlimited medical treatment while abroad and cancellation cover for your trip should the unexpected occur.

Travel insurance is not just handy for medical purposes or travel changes, either. Your personal items can be covered, should any baggage go missing or an important item be stolen—which, unfortunately, often occurs in Vietnam.

Smarttraveller warns Australians to be alert at all times in Vietnam, considering petty theft–including bag slashing–is common in tourist areas and crowded places, especially during holiday times. Snatch-and-grab theft by thieves on motorcycles is also common, the website states.

Like most international travel insurance policies, you will be able to find basic coverage for your trip to Vietnam, or choose to opt for a more comprehensive, albeit more expensive, policy.

While a basic policy will often cover medical expenses and lost luggage,a comprehensive policy includes a lot more. Most basic policies also likely won’t offer compensation for travel delays, stolen cash, accidental death and more.

Additionally, if you are going on a trip to multiple countries within the year, it may be worth opting for an ‘annual multi trip’ insurance instead—making sure that there are no exclusions to the regions you are wishing to visit.

Visa Requirements For Australians Travelling to Vietnam

You’ll still be allowed to travel to Vietnam if you don’t invest in travel insurance, but you do so at your own risk—and, as stated, it is highly advised to have a travel insurance policy for any overseas trip.

However, what you cannot do is enter Vietnam as an Australian tourist without a tourist visa. While Vietnam will grant Australian citizens visas on arrival, applying for one online is much easier.

A tourist visa costs under $100 AUD; however the exact price depends on your length of stay.

The Vietnamese government may consider waiving visas for Australian citizens, especially since many other SEA countries have done so such as Indonesia and Thailand .

However, at the time of writing, Forbes Advisor Australia has confirmed that Australian citizens must still obtain a visa to visit Vietnam for tourism purposes.

The exact inclusions of your travel insurance will be dependent on your personal policy and the provider.

However, generally speaking, you can expect a travel insurance policy for Vietnam to offer some level of cover for:

  • Medical expenses;
  • Lost, damaged or stolen luggage;
  • Travel cancellations or delays ;
  • Personal liability;
  • Credit card fraud;
  • Covid-19 expenses;

If you are partaking in certain sports and activities, you will need to make sure that you choose a policy that covers them. You’ll also need to make sure that your policy covers any pre-existing medical conditions as well.

Plus, if you are travelling with valuables, you may wish to opt for a policy that lets you increase the protection cover on your items.

Ultimately, you need to consider what your trip consists of, what you will be taking with you, and your physical health to establish what policies would be appropriate for you.

Considered one of the most scenic motorcycle routes in the world, the Ha-Giang Loop is a popular tourist activity in Vietnam for adventurous travellers. If the Ha-Giang Loop is one of your goals, you’ll need to make sure you have travel insurance that covers motorcycling.

Occasionally a policy may include this as one of their included ‘sports and activities’, but it is more often the case that you will need to purchase an additional ‘adventure pack’ that is either specific to, or includes, motorsports.

Even so, when purchasing an additional pack to cover motorbikes, you need to be cautious of the conditions. For example, some policies will only cover motorcycle riding if the bike you are riding has an engine under a certain size.

Often, coverage will cease and claims won’t be accepted if you haven’t been wearing the correct safety equipment such as boots and a helmet, or have been under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

What Does Travel Insurance Exclude?

Your travel insurance policy may exclude some activities that you wish to partake in, unless you can opt-in to purchase an additional adventure pack as explained above in regards to motorbike riding.

Just like with the inclusions of a policy, the exclusions depend on what type of policy you choose, and what provider you go with.

Commonly, however, you won’t be covered for instances where you:

  • Break the law;
  • Are under the influence of alcohol or drugs;
  • Partake in an excluded activity;
  • Receive medical treatment for a pre-existing condition that was not disclosed;
  • Travel to a ‘Do Not Travel’ destination as outlined by Smarttraveller.

As always, it is essential to read the product disclosure statement (PDS) of your travel insurance policy carefully to understand what you will and won’t be covered for while overseas.

Do I need a visa to travel to Vietnam?

Yes, as of April 2024, Australian tourists still need a visa to travel to Vietnam. This visa can be obtained on arrival, or purchased online prior to travel. The visa takes approximately three days to process online, and the cost depends on how long you intend to stay in the country.

Does international travel insurance cover Covid-19?

Many comprehensive travel insurance policies now cover Covid-19, including medical conditions related to Covid-19 or trip cancellations due to a Covid-19 diagnosis. However, it is not guaranteed that all policies will. It’s important to check your policy’s PDS carefully to understand what it will and will not cover in regards to Covid-19 for both you and your travelling companions.

How much does travel insurance cost for Vietnam?

The cost of your travel insurance for a trip to Vietnam will depend on your age, your health, the activities you wish to partake in, and the length of your stay.

The prices of these quotes would change depending on a chosen excess, cancellation cover, and any additional coverage options you may choose to purchase such as adventure packs or cruise cover.
