Take a look at Iowa's football facility with exclusive tour via the equipment manager

Every so often, Content is King — COISKI on YouTube — gets to tour a football program’s facility.

Recently, it got a behind-the-scenes tour of Iowa’s facility thanks to the equipment team, and in particular, Greg Morris — the Hawkeyes’ equipment manager. He has been with the program for 30 years.

The football performance center is four-years-old, and looks absolutely brand new. Morris talked about the upgrades from the previous facility when compared to the new one throughout the tour. He talked about the days dating back to legendary Hawkeye coach Hayden Fry as well.

Take a look at the state-of-the-art tour:

The observation deck is smart, but wouldn't it be smarter if they had a balcony walkway all the way around the field, so they could watch from any angle?

Also, how pathetic is it that the feel that they need to boast about putting electrical outlets in the lockers? This facility is a giant upgrade from the old facility, but it seems very blah to me.

Watching all these videos from Morehouse and others, it is amazing how Iowa was able to compete at such a high level with the previous facilities. The amount of detail they went to is amazing. That includes putting outlets in each locker. WTF is wrong with people?

Very impressive, I really think it will help the program in regard to recruiting in the coming years. I thought Brian's comments on how they tried to figure out what to highlight to recruits in the past and what to "hide" vs what they have to work with now is quite telling. How could you not be proud to bring in recruits and show them what you have to offer in regard to the day to day facilities they will be using. Very well thought out and designed.

If you are nitpicking over certain features of the new facility just to lodge another complaint against the Hawkeye football program you're probably at that stage where professional help is suggested. This complex compares favorably to just about any other football facility at any level anywhere in the USA.

Very nice looking facility's it was high time Iowa caught up with the rest of us in football facility's. They said they visited 12 school's I would bet Nebraska was one of them. I seen a lot of our Weight room is comparable to your new one. Ours was completed in 2006, still think Nebraska's Locker room is one of the best in B1G not as Big as Minnesota's which is the largest in the country I might add. But Each locker is made of solid maple with unique ventilation system, and a personalized iPad on the front on the locker donated by Suh.

Was looking for these videos on YouTube and couldn't find them. Had to hunt through here. I did find this old tour though. We've come a long way! Now we just need to get back to a sellout being a given like AY said!

BulliesOfTheBigTen

This is a GREAT video tour of the new facilities led by a couple of the players on the team. Highly entertaining.

Holy cow ... these facilities are truly amazing. I am understanding more and more that the "facilities" really are a necessity on the recruiting front. Well done Hawks!

Iowa's Football Facility Reopens, With Different Rules

  • Author: John Bohnenkamp

iowa football facilities tour

The test for the COVID-19 coronavirus didn't quite measure up to the concerns of Kirk Ferentz.

"Full disclosure, the tests are not as bad as I let it become in my mind," the Iowa football coach said on Wednesday. "I wasted some energy and sleep on that one. It’s not that bad."

It's all part of the reopening process for the Hawkeyes, who haven't been in their football facility since mid-March when the coronavirus pandemic closed the campus.

Ferentz and some of his staff were able to return on Monday, but not before they were tested for the coronavirus. It's something all staff members and players will have to do when they return.

Returning players can begin voluntary workouts on June 8 — they will be tested beginning Friday. Incoming players will be back June 15.

To get into the facility, everyone's temperature is taken and a medical survey is filled out. Anyone inside will have to wear a mask, as well as a wristband saying they are cleared to be in the facility. And if anyone leaves the building for any reason, they'll have to go through the same procedure when they return.

"We’re trying to encourage people (to) take care of things while you’re here," Ferentz said. "Get their business done."

"It’s going to like a lot of things. It’s not going to be perfect. It’s not going to be like last summer, or the summer before that, in terms of access, freedom to come and go, those type of things."

Ferentz, doing a video conference with media members, was speaking on the same day when it was announced that  three Oklahoma State players tested positive for COVID-19 . Four athletes at Iowa State are quarantining and waiting the results of tests.

"We are trying to play a football season," Ferentz said. "We all want to get to the fall. We all want to be together as a team. So this is one more thing that could cause some setbacks and issues for us, so we have to try to do what we can. All that being said, we can’t live in closets either. We just have to be smart, and do what we can."

Ferentz said given the size of Iowa's indoor facilities, and with three practice fields, social distancing shouldn't be an issue. All of the indoor areas will be regularly cleaned.

That doesn't alleviate the concerns of what could happen when the players aren't in the facility.

"The one thing we can do a really good job of is controlling the controllables," Ferentz said. "When they’re in our facility, at least we know there will be good hygiene practiced. There’s going to be a thorough cleaning. We can kind of instruct them on distancing, those types of things. So you really minimize the risk a little bit, at least you have the opportunity to do that. It’s those others 22 hours a day, 21 hours a day, that I’m concerned about. But that’s true all year around."

"I think all of us are a lot more aware of different things."

Ferentz said the voluntary workouts in June will give an idea on what needs to be done beginning in early July when preparations for the new football season begins.

"A lot of science has shown that at least we're making progress now," Ferentz said. "I really think the key thing, from my vantage point, is what can we do, each of us individually, to help make sure we're not having any major setbacks and incurring any big roadblocks.

"All that being said, everyone will admit, nobody knows for sure what is going to happen. The window looks a little better right now. Hopefully we'll be able to get back to doing some football stuff in late July, that's kind of the plan right now from the NCAA's standpoint, and then we'll just take it day by day, week by week, before we even think about the season."

Iowa AD Beth Goetz on making changes at OC, future of athletics department

University of Iowa Athletic Director Beth Goetz speaks Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2024 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa.

CLEVELAND — From the moment Iowa football lost to Minnesota on Oct. 21 through an announcement that offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz would not return, then-interim athletics director Beth Goetz received 67 emails either calling for her to fire the head coach’s son or responding to her decision.

The Athletic obtained those emails and fan vitriol was overwhelming in the Hawkeyes’ first home loss to the Gophers in 24 years. Iowa’s offense was the worst in the nation for two consecutive seasons and against Minnesota it gained 12 yards after halftime. After Goetz (in conjunction with UI President Barbara Wilson) chose not to renew Brian Ferentz’s contract , she received mostly praise in her interactions with fans. Yet it was an uncomfortable moment for Goetz, football coach Kirk Ferentz (Brian’s father) and the athletics department.

In the second part of The Athletic ’s conversation with Goetz — now Iowa’s full-time athletics director — the topics include her relationship with the football program, her involvement in hiring new offensive coordinator Tim Lester and whether Iowa would reinstate the it sports eliminated during the pandemic.

go-deeper

After Caitlin Clark, Iowa's AD believes women's basketball can keep growing in popularity

When it comes to football, Goetz is willing to discuss her relationship with Kirk Ferentz. But she has no interest in revisiting the moment when she announced Brian Ferentz’s contract expiration or the aftermath.

Goetz: “We’re just focused on how do we make sure I’m doing my best to support Kirk and to support the program. He’s the ultimate professional. I feel like we’ve got a really good relationship, and I’m going to be there to support what he needs, what his program needs and make sure we continue to help them be successful and help our fans get excited about this new team, this new Big Ten and some of the things we have in front of it.

“I have an opportunity to work with a coach who’s likely going to be in the Hall of Fame one day. All of us who get to hear about what he’s done, what he’s accomplished and the way he goes about it, the culture he builds with his guys … to be a part of what they do and appreciate that coach has allowed me to do that, I’m excited to see what this year is going to be like.”

iowa football facilities tour

Brian Ferentz’s departure led to a search for an offensive coordinator. While the “ultimate decision” to hire a replacement was with Kirk Ferentz, Goetz also was involved. Ultimately, Iowa hired former Western Michigan coach Tim Lester as offensive coordinator.

Goetz: “One part of our role is to make sure that we’re selling. It’s partly recruiting in that process. You want to make sure those candidates all know what our level of commitment is and answer questions that they may have.

“I met with the finalists and had good conversations with them, and that was great. Coach certainly kept me in the loop throughout the process about who he was talking to. Coach makes that decision and I think he made a good one. So we’re excited to see where Tim will take the program.”

go-deeper

What new Iowa OC Tim Lester's background means for the Hawkeyes

The emails Goetz received were unsurprising and a few were beyond vulgar. One person in particular not only teed off on the Ferentzes but also jabbed men’s basketball coach Fran McCaffery’s youngest son, who was involved in a fatal car accident . That led to Goetz forwarding that email to senior associate athletics director Marcus Wilson and sending an internal message that read, “pretty concerning last line.”

Iowa athletics has an administrative team that looks at those emails, not just Goetz. Anything that’s disrespectful or personal is “a quick delete.”

Goetz: “You have the extreme, where hire a coach, fire a coach, whatever the issue is, this is the basketball court we want. But sometimes you learn through those emails something we weren’t aware of or a really great idea.”

An ongoing debate in collegiate sports involves the financial tug-of-war between athletics departments and independent collectives over donations. It’s likely to create serious issues for both entities without a systemic overhaul.

At Iowa, The Swarm Collective led by Brad Heinrichs received enthusiastic support from the football coaching staff upon its launch in July 2022. However, then-athletics director Gary Barta kept The Swarm at arm’s length. There were internal Title IX concerns over a department’s endorsement of a limited collective involving just three sports (football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball). When Goetz took over for Barta, she immediately sought a better relationship with The Swarm and convinced the collective to include every sport on campus.

Goetz: “You probably have seen a little bit of a change in the way that we dialogue around that. We are Iowa and there are rules and entities from the foundation to The Swarm about what ability we have to be engaged in different spaces right now. But whether you want to talk about those groups or you want to talk about Learfield, this is all about how we support Iowa and Iowa athletes.

“We certainly internally have to prioritize. Coaches have to prioritize, which everything is the most important so this is probably the hardest for them. I do think it’s possible you’re going to see donor fatigue over time, but I think as we try to approach those relationships we should always be donor-centric.”

Goetz adds that the goal is for donors to “follow their passion” and find alignment with their department needs rather than nudge them in a direction.

In August 2020, the Big Ten canceled football, which led to financial scrambling for many athletics departments. Ten days after the cancelation (which was reversed in mid-September), Barta announced he would eliminate men’s tennis, men’s gymnastics, men’s swimming/diving and women’s swimming/diving. Following a Title IX lawsuit, part of the settlement included reinstating the women’s swimming/diving team plus adding a second women’s sport, wrestling. The three men’s sports remain defunct. Goetz didn’t arrive at Iowa until September 2022.

Goetz: “I can tell you at most places I’ve worked, there’s been a moment in time where financially those discussions have been had, and I’m so grateful I’ve never been at a place when that moment had to happen. As a former athlete and a coach, I can only imagine how difficult that is for everyone involved, the decision-makers, but certainly those who no longer have those opportunities and that tie.

“Our goal as we navigate whatever the new version in college athletics is, obviously first and foremost, to protect the sports that we have, and ensure that we’re offering them great opportunities. And when you talk about doing that at the highest level, I think that’s really trying to figure out what are the critical components of each program. And I think we’ll be talking about that broadly, I think we’ll talk about that in the Big Ten, I think you’re going to talk about that nationally.

“In the short term, to consider adding sports, I think in many ways would be irresponsible. We don’t know what the financial model looks like. It’s just not something currently on our radar. I know that’s not what those groups want to hear. But, it would just be irresponsible not to understand exactly where those resources are going to go. So other than always being willing to listen to athletes and coaches who are part of those programs, it’s not something we are currently thinking about.”

The uncertainty surrounding the collegiate model has led to many athletics departments putting major projects on hold. That could be adding sports, building new facilities or piling on debt. Many departments, including Iowa, are preparing to pay athletes in some form in the near future and working through multiple models.

Goetz: “If your resources are moving, you’re really going to have to look at how we allocate resources we have today. To do that (add sports) right now, without understanding what it looks like, I’m not sure we serve anybody very well that way. So at this point, let’s figure out nationally where we are, understand what your financial responsibilities are going to be, what the landscape is going to look like and you get a hold of that.

“If renovating Carver was about having just a new, beautiful facility, we probably wouldn’t be doing that right at this moment. Part of the challenges covered just means there are some things you’re going to have to invest in infrastructure-wise. But I think you’re going to have to be much more mindful about where those things go. So is it glamorous locker rooms, and all of these other things? Or is it whatever form of resource we need to provide, additional support that athletes are going to receive directly?”

5-star ot ty haywood sets official visit after first trip to fsu, share this article.

FSU already has five-star offensive lineman Solomon Thomas committed for 2025. The grind never stops, though, and they have become a top contender for another five-star player in the trenches, offensive tackle Ty Haywood out of Denton, Texas.

The Seminoles made an offer to Haywood last February. However, this past weekend was his first time on campus, and things went extremely well. So much so that the 6-foot-5, 285-pounder has set an official visit with FSU from June 21-23 per Zach Blostein of Noles247 . Haywood also has visits with TCU (May 3), UCLA (May 10), Alabama (May 31), Texas A&M (June 7), and Oklahoma (June 14-16).

When it comes to Haywood’s interest in FSU, they can thank one man, offensive line coach Alex Atkins .

“[OC/OL coach] Coach [Alex] Atkins,” Haywood said. “He’s a cool guy, real guy. He’s always keeping it real. So I wanted to go down there and visit him then visit the facilities and all that. Meet the other coaches — it was a great time down there.”

Of course, Atkins isn’t the only person trying to sell FSU to Haywood. Head coach Mike Norvell hadn’t gotten a chance to meet Haywood yet, but when he did, it was quite the introduction.

“When I first got there, we were walking around the facility. I was getting a tour by one of the tour people and he called and he was like ‘I didn’t get a chance to meet Ty yet.’ So we were at the corner and he’s yelling my name from all the way in the front of the building,” said Haywood. “And he sprinted all the way around the building yelling my name. So he’s very, very energetic.”

Add Haywood to the long list of recruits that have raved about the energy that Norvell brings to the table, and it’s certainly a big reason why kids end up coming to Tallahassee. Per the 247Sports composite rankings, Haywood is the No. 10 overall recruit, the No. 2 offensive tackle, and the No. 3 prospect out of Texas.

Will Norvell’s influence work its magic again on Haywood? We shall see.
