Setting Sail: The Ultimate Guide to Los Angeles Cruise Ports

Navigator of the Seas docked at San Pedro cruise port, Los Angeles

Many cruise lines sail out of one of Los Angeles’ two cruise ports in San Pedro (World Cruise Center) or Long Beach. However, relative to the massive cruise volume in Florida, the Port of Los Angeles has smaller cruise ports with just 500,000 passengers annually.

If you have a booked a cruise out of L.A., in this guide, you’ll discover the options for getting to the different ports, cost of parking, and where to stay before embarkation day.

My wife Karen and I have sailed on both Carnival, Celebrity, and Princess out of Los Angeles to the Mexican Riviera. It’s the perfect winter getaway and a short flight for anyone living near the West Coast.

Los Angeles & Long Beach Cruise Port Locations

Both ports are located just a few miles from each other, with one in San Pedro and the other in Long Beach.

Los Angeles cruise ports map

Long Beach Cruise Terminal is used exclusively by Carnival Cruise Line. We sailed on the Carnival Miracle to the  Mexican Riviera  out of Long Beach.

The Long Beach terminal has a lower passenger volume than San Pedro, but we had a great experience when we sailed. The staff were efficient, friendly, and got us boarded quickly.

San Pedro (World Cruise Terminal) handles other cruise lines and is just a short distance from Long Beach in case you happen to go take an Uber to the wrong cruise terminal!

Los Angeles is a popular cruise port for the millions of Americans living within a few hours’ drive or a short flight from L.A. It’s also favored by anyone living on the West Coast (including Canadians like us!).

We have taken the short flight from Vancouver many times to Los Angeles to take a winter-break cruise. Our latest was a cruise on the Discovery Princess  in January with Karen’s 81-year-old mum.

Should I Arrive The Day Before My Cruise?

If you are arriving in Los Angeles by plane, a common question is, “Do I need to arrive the day before I cruise?” The short answer is “YES!”

A ship docked at the Los Angeles cruise port, and signage at the port

Our flight to Los Angeles is 2 hrs. 30 mins. Before COVID, we would fly in the morning of our cruise. Post-COVID, there have been high incidents of delays and canceled flights.

While you’ll need a hotel stay flying a day earlier, you won’t be at risk of missing your cruise.

You are probably okay to fly same day if you are coming from Phoenix, Las Vegas, San Francisco, or Sacramento. However, from these cities, you could as easily make the drive and pay for parking at the cruise port.

For cities like Albuquerque, Salt Lake City, or anywhere in Texas, even catching an early flight can be a problem. Karen and I fly down from Vancouver, Canada, and choose to fly the day before.

However, even catching an early flight, we don’t want the risk of being delayed and missing embarkation. On our last cruise, it was comical to hear the announcements for passengers who were late boarding.

If you are late for your ship leaving, your only option is to attempt to catch a flight to the next port and board the ship there.

Should I Book My Flight Through The Cruise Line?

Another option is to book your flight to Los Angeles through your cruise line. If you are the type of traveler who already uses a travel agent, this may be your best choice.

The cruise line arranges the flights and will get you to the cruise terminal. The advantage is that if your flights are late, the cruise line will ensure you get transportation to the cruise ship.

If you are sailing out of Los Angeles and your first port is Cabo San Lucas, the cruise line would arrange a last-minute flight to Cabo. This would enable you to join the ship at the first port.

However, you may pay a higher price than directly booking yourself or using your airline points. There are several pros and cons, and we have never booked our flights through the cruise line.

On the other hand, if your first stop was Santa Barbara in California, you wouldn’t have far to go.

I generally would not book flights through the cruise line because we like to book online ourselves. However, you decide whatever works best for you and gives you peace of mind.

Which Cruise Lines Sail Out Of Los Angeles

The  Long Beach Cruise Terminal  is used exclusively by Carnival Cruise Lines.

San Pedro cruise terminal 91-92

The  World Cruise Center  in San Pedro is home to many other cruise lines, such as:

  • Celebrity Cruises
  • Cunard Line
  • Norwegian Cruise Line
  • Oceania Cruise Line
  • Princess Cruise Line
  • Royal Caribbean Cruise Line
  • Regent Cruise Line
  • Seabourn Cruise Line
  • Viking Cruise Line

Los Angeles Cruise Port (World Cruise Center)

The World Cruise Center is typically busy, with often multiple ships sailing each day.  Ports America  has a handy website if you want to see what cruise ships are in port on the day of your cruise.

The World Cruise Center offers a jumping point to itineraries of the Panama Canal, Hawaii, Mexico, and Pacific Ocean crossings to Asia and Australia.

Touring the USS Iowa Battleship

If you’re arriving a day early, consider touring the USS Iowa , visiting the Los Angeles Maritime Museum, or strolling the LA waterfront.

How To Get To Los Angeles Cruise Port (World Cruise Center)

The World Cruise Center is located at  100 Swinford Street, San Pedro, CA. The terminal is 20-23 miles (32-37 km) from the Los Angeles International Airport.

Taxi prices can vary but expect to pay at least USD 65 or more if traveling from LAX International Airport to the Long Beach Cruise terminal. From Long Beach Airport, you’ll pay USD 35.

If driving  from the North , take 405 South to 110 South. Then you will follow the signs to the World Cruise Center.

Parking At The World Cruise Center

San Pedro cruise port entrance

The parking area is next to the terminal and costs USD 20 per day. For a 7-day cruise, you can expect to pay USD 140. There are no discounts for weekly parking.

If you are close enough to drive to the cruise terminal, bringing your own car will save you the cost of airfare! If you have stayed overnight at a hotel, some offer discounted parking rates for cruise guests.

How Many Ships Can Dock At San Pedro?

This LA cruise port has two terminals, berths 91 to 93. Berth 93 can accommodate one vessel. The other terminal can dock two smaller ships at berths 91 and 92. Larger vessels dock here and take the space of two ships. Both terminals are covered, should it rain.

On the rare occasion, San Pedro sees three ships which can’t dock at these two terminals. So, they utilize berth 46, much further away. Since berth 46 only sees a ship once every seven months, the port creates a makeshift passenger terminal from large tents.

Makeshift terminal at berth 46 at San Pedro, Los Angeles

So, if you’re embarking at berth 46, make sure your shuttle, taxi or rideshare takes you to the correct place. If you’re left at berth 91-93, complimentary shuttles will transport you to the right area.

If rain is forecasted for embarkation day and you’re boarding at berth 46, cruise passengers line up outside the tents. So, wear a raincoat and bring an umbrella.

Our embarkation at berth 46 was chaotic with long lines waiting to drop off luggage. Then another line to check in. After check in, we were told to get back on a bus to drive the few hundred feet to board the ship. We chose to walk.

World Cruise Center Accommodation

There are several options very close to the World Cruise Center. Here are some we recommend.

Exterior of the Crowne Plaza Los Angeles Harbor Hotel

Crowne Plaza Hotel Los Angeles Harbor – It’s under a mile from the cruise port and a favorite among cruisers. The Crowne Plaza provides a port shuttle if needed and has an inhouse restaurant.

It offers stay and park packages for cruise guests. Parking costs USD 15 per night, a nice savings over cruise port parking.

Vagabond Inn San Pedro – Complimentary continental breakfast included, and just a 3-minute drive to the World Cruise Center.

The West Harbor Inn  – Port of Los Angeles San Pedro. it’s just 1.2 miles (2 km) to the cruise terminal. Good value in a modest hotel.

If you’re flying in on a late flight, staying at a hotel near LAX makes more sense.

Long Beach Cruise Terminal

Long Beach cruise terminal

The Port of Long Beach is used solely by Carnival Cruise Line, offering Mexican Riviera Cruises or short getaways to Catalina Island and Ensenada, Mexico.

The dome-shaped structure provides embarkation, debarkation, and security services. You’ll find it next to the RMS Queen Mary.

The Queen Mary is an original ocean liner that sailed across the Atlantic Ocean from 1936 to 1967. It was owned by Cunard-White Star until 1967 when it was purchased by the City of Long Beach.

Converted to a hotel, accommodation, and tours were available until the COVID-19 pandemic struck in 2020. The cost of maintenance and required repairs may ultimately lead to its permanent retirement.

How To Get To Long Beach Cruise Port

The Long Beach Cruise Terminal is located at 231 Windsor Way, Long Beach, CA. You can contact them by phone at (305) 599-2600 ext. 35015.

The terminal is 23 miles (37 km) from the Los Angeles International Airport. Expect to pay USD 65+ for a taxi from LAX and USD 35 from Long Beach Airport.

Uber prices can vary but expect to pay about USD 35+ if traveling from LAX to the Long Beach Cruise terminal.

If driving  from the North,  take 405 South to 710 South. Note that the 710 Freeway ends at the Long Beach port, so then you will follow the signs to the cruise terminal.

If driving  from the South , take I-5 North to 405 North. Next, take the 710 Freeway to the end at the Long Beach Cruise Port. Follow the signs to the cruise terminal.

Parking At The Long Beach Cruise Port

If driving your own car, you can pay to park during your cruise for approx. USD 23 per day. As a result, for a 7-day cruise, expect to pay USD 161 or more.

Carnival Miracle docked at the Long Beach cruise port

Accommodation Near the Long Beach Cruise Port

There are several hotels or accommodations near the Long Beach Cruise Port. As mentioned earlier, I would recommend flying in the day before your cruise just to be safe.

For the cost of a 1-night stay at a local hotel, you will have peace of mind and be guaranteed you won’t miss your cruise.

Here are some hotels that you can stay at near the Long Beach Cruise Terminal:

Hotel Maya Long Beach  – Very close to the Long Beach port. Hotel Maya also has a cruise terminal shuttle with continental and American breakfast options.

Residence Inn Long Beach  in downtown. This hotel is less than a mile from the cruise terminal. They offer a complimentary hot breakfast.

Best Western Plus Hotel at the Convention Center. When staying here, you will get a hot buffet breakfast. A complimentary shuttle to the Long Beach Cruise Terminal is included.

Hilton Hotel Long Beach  – This Hilton Hotel offers a complimentary cruise shuttle.

Final Thoughts

Los Angeles is an incredible city to visit and one of our favorite ports to cruise out of. Due to its convenient location on the West Coast, it’s a short flight for anyone on the West Coast of the United States.

On our first cruise, we extended our stay a few days so we could take in Universal Studios and Disneyland before flying back to Vancouver. It was great fun with memories to last a lifetime!

Unless you are sailing on Carnival, you will always cruise out of the World Cruise Center in San Pedro. Located in Southern California, the Lost Angeles Cruise Terminal is the perfect embarkation for winter cruises.

I hope this guide helped to answer some of your questions so you can have a hassle-free cruise.

Disneyland Cruises from Los Angeles

It's easy to pair a visit to Disneyland with a short cruise. Disney doesn't offer official package deals, but you can create your own.

Disneyland is in Anaheim California, only about 30 miles from the port of Los Angeles. Disneyland Park is the original theme park. It is divided into 8 lands -- Main Street, Tomorrowland, Fantasyland, Mickey's Toontown, Frontierland, Critter Country, New Orleans Square and Adventureland. A few of the famous attractions are Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, Pirates of the Caribbean, Matterhorn Bobsleds, It's a Small World, Indiana Jones Adventure, and the Monorail.

The other theme park there is Disney California Adventure Park. It is newer and has 7 lands including Buena Vista Street, Cars Land, Grizzly Peak, Paradise Pier, Pacific Wharf, A Bugs Land, and Hollywood Land. The attractions are based on Disney and Pixar stories.

Stay at an official Disney hotel or at one of the nearby hotels, for 3 or 4 days. Then take a 3-day cruise or 4-day cruise to fill out the rest of your vacation week. Any travel agent can make the arrangements for you.

It is also possible to combine a trip to Disneyland with a real Disney Cruise out of San Diego . The cruise terminal in San Diego is 96 miles from Disneyland; about a 2 hour drive.

Disney Cruises from Southern California

Taking a Disney Cruise from Southern California

If you're planning a trip to Disneyland California and you want to extend your LA Disney experience beyond the Disneyland Resort boundaries, or if you've already done the theme parks and you're looking for a new Disney experience, you can schedule in a Disney Cruise departing from San Diego. They used to depart from the World Cruise Center at the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro , but now only stop in San Diego as they reposition.

Which Disney Ships Depart from Los Angeles?

The Disney Wonder , which used to offer cruises from the Port of Los Angeles, has moved its Southern California port of call to San Diego , so there are not currently any Disney Cruise offerings out of Los Angeles or Long Beach, but that can always change, so keep an eye on their cruise schedule. The art nouveau décor of the Disney Wonder incorporates iconic Disney characters along with nautical wave themes. A bronze statue of Ariel, from The Little Mermaid greets guests in the lobby of the ship.

Where Can You Cruise on A Disney Ship from Southern California?

The Disney Wonder  now spends winters offering Caribbean Cruises out of Miami and summers offering Alaska cruises out of Vancouver, but it offers a couple cruises from San Diego repositioning between the two. One is a quick three night Mexican Riviera trip to Ensenada on the West Coast of Mexico. Search for Disney Cruises to the Mexican Riviera Disney's 5-night Alaska cruise originates in San Diego, then travels north to San Francisco before depositing the ship in Vancouver for the summer. Search for Disney Cruises to Alaska Once or twice a year, you can take the Panama Canal repositioning cruise from San Diego to Miami via Cabo San Lucas, Mexico; Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; Panama Canal, Panama; Cartagena, Colombia; and Costa Maya, Mexico. From Miami, the Disney Wonder cruises to the East and West Caribbean. Search for Disney Cruises to Panama Canal During the summer, the Disney Wonder relocates to the Pacific Northwest and offers cruises from Seattle and Vancouver to Alaska. They may also offer one repositioning cruise from Vancouver to San Diego.

Looking for info on options / cost and needed travel time

You can also check the above two companies for private transfer options. For instance SuperShuttle's execucar service shows the trip at about $67 for up to 4 people in a private conveyance.

A taxi with the most direct (but slower) route avoiding the freeways probably in the $80-90 range. Faster route on the freeways over $100.

la cruise port to disneyland

The two main Companies are Prime Time and SuperShuttle for Shared Vans.

Plenty of companies will offer a Private Van.

Castle Inn might have a deal with a specific company.

But I have found it isn't the company, but the driver that makes the difference, and you can't request a specific driver...

Go for the one with the lowest cost that is well known.

I would reconsider staying at the Castle Inn. It has not had consistant good ratings. There are so many other standard places to stay that would offer much better consistantly good ratings for the same cost or less even if you are needing a larger family suite.

Hi happytotrip, I have checked so many sites close to Disney. Most are out of our budget or already booked for our dates of may 17 and 18. We were quoted 401. Taxes in for the suite. My thought was we are only sleeping there for two nights and will not be at the room during the day. But if you have a better option I am open ears.

All of the rest of these places to stay are showing availability for your dates.....

The least expensive options are going to be the Alpine Inn ..... which is a standard Motel, and family run, but very well rated, about a 13 min walk with Art Shuttle at the Desert Palms next door. It has availability for your dates at $79 a night without taxes, but also has a larger 2 bedroom family suite that you need to book directly. Its usually about $109 a night for your dates.

You can also try the Anaheim Plaza Inn...... which is a more basic but clean Motel, about a 9 min walk. The have connecting rooms that are family suites that would be close to your budget, and offer a AAA discount if you have some form of AAA where you live. They would be around $60 more total than the Castle Inn.

The Anaheim Islander Inn.... also a standard well rated Motel about a 14 min walk with Art shuttle has thier larger 2 bedroom family suite for $336 total.

Any of these place to stay would be better Imo than the Castle Inn.

Thanks ill check them out

Thank you to all my forum friends I did get a reservation at the BW. They are partners with air-miles and I was able to get a great rate. Now I can focus on the fun things to do for two days .

My wife and I are booked on the October 2012 Hawaiian Cruise. We are not familiar with the L.A. area. Our questions are how far is it between LAX airport and Disneyland Resorts and does Disney have any transportation between Port of Los Angeles and their Disneyland Resorts?

Let the countdown begin!

You can also get transfers to and from the port through DCL at $30 per person each way. Depending on how many are in your party you might want to check out the ExecuCar service from Super Shuttle http://www.supershuttle.com/en/ExecuCar.aspx?Location=ExecuCar http://www.execucar.com/ I put both links in case the first one didn't work.

Dis veteran.

I booked our upcoming trip's transfers on www.gosedan.com part of PrimeTime Shuttle as it was about the same $ for DH and I as the DCL bus. There is no magical express in DL but there is a Disneyland shuttle that runs between LAX and the DL hotels (as well as offsite hotels) I can't remember the cost for that though.

There is quite a bit of information in this thread: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2752784 It is 30-45 minutes from the port to DL, depending on traffic. DCL offers a shuttle from LAX to/from the Port of Los Angeles, from the Port of Los Angeles to/from Disneyland and from Disneyland to/from LAX. The last I checked, it was $30 pp for each leg of the shuttle. By comparison, shuttles like Super Shuttle are in the $17- $20 pp range.

Samantha_Mommy

Mouseketeer.

Super shuttle does shuttles from DL to the port. I got quoted from the Camelot to the port (1A & 1C) $58.00. Haven't made my mind if I will choosing this. I had to call them direct to get this info. I also confirmed with the hotel if they heard of this, they said yes.

www.primetimeshuttle.com is almost always the lowest price. If you want to spend a bit more and get an exclusive ride the GoSedan service is available and you can compare the prices for all the different options all on one screen.

It was $30 to the port. Had horrible experIrnce with PT.

CruznLexi said: It was $30 to the port. Had horrible experIrnce with PT. Click to expand...

We used the DCL transfers from Disneyland to the port and really liked the convenience. We put our luggage outside our room at the Disneyland Hotel that morning and went to the park. We got back to the hotel for our pick-up around noon-ish. Went to the port in comfort, watching Disney videos. Our luggage was later delivered to our stateroom. It was really nice not to have to fool with the luggage. We were doing a Disneyland-repo-1st Alaskan trip, so we were dealing with quite a bit of luggage! It was just really convenient not to have to worry about things.

We will do this for Hawaii we had such a bad experience with PT will gladly wait on DCL the am of the cruise.

Los Angeles Cruise Port: Tips, Attractions and Weather

The Los Angeles cruise port is actually in San Pedro, which is a district within the sprawling city of Los Angeles.

So anyone planning a cruise out of Los Angeles will know that references to both San Pedro and Los Angeles mean the same thing.

San Pedro is home to the Port of Los Angeles, the World Cruise Center and at least nine major cruise lines. It is only eight miles west of the Long Beach cruise terminal.

Cruise lines that embark from Los Angeles include Carnival, Celebrity, Costa, Crystal, Cunard, Disney, Norwegian, Princess and Royal Caribbean.

Destinations include the Mexican Riviera - Hawaii - Alaska and the California coast.

The World Cruise Center, 100 Swinford Street, has two berths and two passenger terminals.

Parking free for the first hour and $2 an hour afterwards. The maximum cost is $18 a day. Courtesy shuttles take passengers between the terminals and parking lots.

Los Angeles Cruise Port Map

At least a half dozen hotels are within walking distance or a short drive of the cruise terminal.

They include DoubleTree, Best Western, Pacific Inn & Suites, Crowne Plaza, Sunrise Hotel, Allstar Inn and Vagabond Inn. Most of them have room rates ranging between $100 and $200 a night.

Attractions and Shore Excursions

Anyone who goes on a cruise for the first time may fly into Los Angeles International Airport, take transportation to the World Cruise Center and start a cruise on the same day.

We like to take advantage of attractions at our embarkation ports. If we arrive or leave on the same day as a cruise, we will try to visit points of interest near the cruise terminal.

The World Cruise Center is on the Los Angeles historic waterfront by the World Cruise Terminal. Attractions there include the Battleship USS Iowa and the Los Angeles Maritime Museum.

Battleship USS Iowa, 250 S. Harbor Boulevard, is a museum with exhibits and tours. Visitors can take either a guided or self-guided tour. The Iowa launched in 1942 and was decommissioned in 1990. It saw action in World War II and the Korean War and served patrol duty in the Cold War. Tickets are $29.95 for 12-year-old children, teens and adults, $19.95 for children ages 3 to 11 and free for children 2 and younger.

Many cruises that embark from Los Angeles stop at nearby Catalina Island. For those that don’t, visitors can walk to the Catalina Island Express Terminal and take a ferry to the island before or after their cruise. Ferry rides are about one hour long. Round-trip tickets at the time of this writing are $74.50 for people ages 12 to 54, $67.50 for seniors 55+ and $59 for children ages 2 to 11. Ferry schedules vary with the season.

Two aquariums are a brief taxi ride away from the cruise terminal. Cabrillo Marine Aquarium is about three miles south of the cruise center. Aquarium of the Pacific is a little more than six miles away at Long Beach.

Anyone with a lot more time can go one hour east to Disneyland in Anaheim. Beverly Hills is less than an hour north for anyone who wants to look for celebrities. Universal Studios Hollywood is about one hour and 15 minutes north.

Getting Around / Transportation

Cruise passengers who don’t live in the area and drive to the port most likely will fly into Los Angeles International Airport. It is 19 miles north or about 25 minutes by car from the World Cruise Center (assuming there are no major traffic jams).

A taxi is the quickest and most expensive way to get from the airport to the cruise center or the hotels near it. Ride services such as Uber and Lyft are usually less expensive, although their charges may go up during heavy traffic.

Most major hotels in the area offer free shuttle services. LA Metro offers bus and rail options from the airport to the cruise terminal. This is the least expensive but most time consuming option.

Cruise Port Weather

Los Angeles may have a reputation for heavy traffic, but it has a good reputation for weather.

The city has mild daytime temperatures ranging from the upper 60s Fahrenheit in the winter to the low to mid 80s in the summer.

It has distinct rainy and dry seasons. The rainy season goes from December through March with average monthly rainfall during that time of about three to four inches, according to historical data from the U.S. National Weather Service.

The dry season from April through November is quite dry with average monthly rainfall of about one inch and sometimes less.

Getting to Disneyland from Princess Cruise Port

Cool Cruiser

just wondering if anyone has headed to Disneyland after a cruise and can give me an idea of how long it takes, what option they went with etc. Looks like husband and I are going to book a short 4 day cruise from Vancouver to LA on Princess in October, and I'm thinking we should do one crazy Disney day before we fly home. This is a trip without our kids so just would do one day.

Thanks so much!

A couple of years ago we visited San Pedro as a port/day stop and decided to visit Disneyland. I googled Car Services for Disneyland and found a company called "Affordable Car Service" (Or something like that). They charged us $170 USD for transport from the ship, to Disneyland and return to the ship. We put the call out on our roll call and split the fare with another couple.

The drive to Disneyland was just over 40 minutes - when I was planning this I got tons of comments about how bad the traffic would be and I better have a back-up plan just in case... didn't need it at all. The return to the ship was also about 40 minutes. The driver took great advantage of HOV lanes.

There are also shuttle companies that will pick up from the San Pedro and drop off in Anaheim (Super Shuttle) and there is also Uber. Try googling and see what you find - going to Disneyland post cruise in definitely doable.

For your flight back, you may want to consider John Wayne Airport - a little closer that LAX and I believe Westjet still offers direct flights.

  • 2 weeks later...

I live about 8 miles from Disneyland. I would not try to visit Disneyland and fly out the same day. If you are going to stay overnght this is very doable. You would need to make arrangements for your luggage, so maybe Super Shuttle can take you to your hotel room near Disneyland. Then drop off the luggage and head over. Be prepared for a LOT of people at Disneyland. That place is packed to the gills every day.

Lucky you! We are Disney fans so try to visit every couple of years :)

We aren’t concerned about luggage, we are only going on a 4 day cruise, so will pack carry ons, and Disney has large lockers we can store them in (we’ve used them)

Agree with you on the crowds, we’ve def seen an increase in numbers, we were just there in May and the crowds were BIG.

How long do you think it will take for us to self carry off the ship and be at Disneyland? What t8me do you think we could get there?

What day of the week, time of year? On a weekend, it's 40 minutes tops probably, on a weekday at 8:30AM, up to double that.

I'd use Uber or Lyft.

John Wayne (SNA) is closer, but LAX will have more options. SNA's last flight is 10PM.

I am wondering what time to have a car service pick me up after disembarking as we are heading to Disneyland for a few days post cruise.  We do not want to do any express or rush disembarking, just the regular disembark time.  What time will that put us off the ship?

Any ideas what time to have a car service pick us up?

Last disembarkation is probably around 10:30AM. You can have a car service meet you at 11-11:15AM, or just call an Uber when you get outside the terminal.

Thanks for your reply, I'm not looking for the latest possible time...just like a reasonable time...I guess I was somewhat unclear when I said I didn't want to rush.  I know there are "express" or "speedy" type disembarkatioins for people with early flights and stuff like that which we would not need.

I know on all previous cruises I've been on(Disney, RCCL, Carnival) we have disembarked around 8am without any rushing, I was wondering if it was about the same on Celebrity.

Could we reasonably expect to be off the ship by 8am?

8AM would be one of the early times, you might have to request that time to get it I think. Normally they space out the times over several groupsl

Thanks for the great info!  Can you tell me how disembarking works on Celebrity?  We have never cruised them before and just assumed that once they give the all clear you are permitted to exit the ship...is this not the case?

I'm a Princess and NCL cruiser these days mostly. I haven't been on Celebrity for at least 15 years. You might try the boards for your ship.

I don't know if it is a function of the San Pedro DHS or the ships, but every time I've disembarked the last 5 years at least it has been in groups spaced about 20 minutes apart.

How these cruise passengers missed boarding, got stranded in Africa

Both Americans and Australians were left at port after an excursion ran long.

GMA logo

After what seemed like a dream trip, several American travelers were left stranded at port in West Africa mid-cruise while traveling from Cape Town, South Africa, to Barcelona, Spain.

Jay and Jill Campbell told ABC News Myrtle Beach affiliate WPDE that they were in the first week of a three week voyage aboard Norwegian Cruise Lines when they stopped just off the coast of West Africa.

The couple and others opted to tour the nearby island of São Tomé and Príncipe on the afternoon of March 27, and when the excursion ran late, they said they brought it to the guides' attention.

"We were like, 'our time is getting short,'" Jay Campbell recalled, at which point he said the guide let them know, "'No problem we can get you back in an hour.'"

Upon their return, the passengers said cruise officials refused to let them aboard the ship, even as the local Coast Guard had ferried the group to the anchored vessel.

"The harbormaster tried to call the ship. The captain refused the call. We sent emails to NCL the customer service emergency number," Jay Campbell said. "They said the only way for us to get in touch with the ship is via email. They're not responding to our emails."

The Campbells say they were left stranded along with four other Americans and two Australians -- of whom one is a paraplegic, one has a heart condition and one is pregnant. Some did not have credit cards or medication that was left on board.

Cruise expert Stewart Chiron, known as The Cruise Guy, told ABC News that "the bottom line was, they were hours late, the ship was ready to go."

"More than likely that the anchor was already up, and the ship was already possibly moving," he said.

He continued, "Any operation at that point to get these passengers back on the ship would have caused tremendous delays, and safety would have been a major concern."

In a statement to ABC News, a spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Lines said, "On the afternoon of March 27, 2024, while the ship was in São Tomé and Príncipe, an African island nation, eight guests who were on the island on a private tour not organized through us missed the last tender back to the vessel, therefore not meeting the all aboard time of 3 p.m. local time."

They continued, "While this is a very unfortunate situation, guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time, which is communicated broadly over the ship's intercom, in the daily communication and posted just before exiting the vessel."

The spokesperson added that the passports for the passengers who did not return at the all aboard time "were delivered to the local port agents to retrieve when they returned to the port, as per the regular protocol."

"Our team has been working closely with the local authorities to understand the requirements and necessary visas needed for the guests to rejoin the ship at the next available port of call," they said.

The Campbells said that their eight person group spent 15 hours traveling through six countries in an attempt to rejoin the Norwegian Dawn ship in Banjul, Gambia, on April 1. However, the ship couldn't dock due to low tide, so they are now trying to get to Senegal where the ship is meant to dock on Tuesday.

The Norwegian spokesperson said, "Unfortunately the ship was unable to safely dock in the destination due to adverse weather conditions, as well as tidal restrictions that require specific timing for safe passage. While we share in our guests' disappointment, this modification was made with great consideration for their safety and that of our crew, which is our top priority."

The cruise line contacted the guests "regarding this itinerary adjustment and provided them with authorization to rejoin the ship at Dakar, Senegal on April 2, 2024."

In light of the "series of unfortunate events outside of our control," the spokesperson said Norwegian Cruise Lines "will be reimbursing these eight guests for their travel costs from Banjur, Gambia to Dakar, Senegal" and are still in communication with the guests to provide additional information as it becomes available.

In a separate, unrelated situation that took place coincidentally on the same day of the voyage, the spokesperson said, "An 80-year-old woman was medically disembarked after being evaluated by our onboard medical team, who thought it best that she receive further assessment and treatment as needed from a local hospital."

"In instances such as these, as the guest was released from the hospital and in a coherent state, our protocol is to contact the guest directly, as we would not have the authority to share any medical details with anyone else without their expressed consent," the spokesperson added, saying they worked with the port agent to receive updates.

"The guest has since been escorted on a flight to Lisbon, Portugal, and then put in the care of airport staff to continue her journey to the United States, where she has now made a safe return," they said.

Port St Francisville LA cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from St Francisville LA, Louisiana. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

St Francisville LA is a Mississippi River cruise port and town in West Feliciana Parish (Louisiana USA) with population around 2,000. The town is part of Baton Rouge metro (population around 830,000). A same-named city can be found in Illinois (IL).

The town was founded in 1809 as the commercial hub for the surrounding plantations. The settlement (initially named Bayou Sara) was established in the late-18th-century and developed atop a narrow ridge that overlooks the river. Bayou Sara was the largest Mississippi port between Memphis and New Orleans. Unfortunately, the original town was destroyed by repeated fires and flooding.

In 1810 (September 23 through December 10), St Francisville LA served as the capital city of Republic of West Florida (part of Spanish West Florida). In that period, local plantation owners rebelled against the Spanish and established (for 74 days) an independent republic, that subsequently surrendered to the US Army and was annexed to Louisiana.

In June 1863, William Walter Leake (1833-1912, Confederate Army officer) arranged for the burial of John E.Hart (1824-63, Union Navy officer), who died aboard his vessel while taking part in Union blockade of Mississippi River. Every June, the historical event is re-enacted during the 3-day "The Day the War Stopped" commemoration.

As the current-day St Francisville's economy is largely based on history-themed domestic tourism, community efforts are focused mainly on reservation and preservation of buildings and former antebellum plantations - all of which are open daily for private and group tours. Among the largest and most popular for touring sites are Audubon State Historic Site (state park property), Rosedown Plantation (with a 740 m2-sized mansion / on the above photo), Butler Greenwood Plantation ( ~2 km / 1,5 mi north of downtown), Cottage Plantation (1795-1859-built), Myrtles Plantation (1796-built by General David Bradford, one of the USA's most haunted homes), as well as a few antebellum gardens.

New cruise ship Disney Treasure gets 1st taste of water

Disney Cruise Line’s new ship can float.

The Disney Treasure entered the next phase of construction as work continues at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, with the float out of the 144,000-gross-ton, 4,000-passenger vessel.

The sister ship to Disney Wish that debuted in 2022 will also be coming to Port Canaveral this December, set to take on seven-night Caribbean itineraries.

The ship’s first taste of water came last month, according to an update on the Disney Parks Blog .

“Water from the Ems River was pumped into the building dock where the ship is being constructed, lifting the hull from the floor of the chamber,” the post reads. “The shipyard team was then able to guide the Disney Treasure to a new location, where it will undergo the next phase of construction.”

The ship had its keel laid in March 2023 and is expected to be complete after 20 months of construction. The vessel still has a lot of interior and top-deck work to be completed before it makes its way along the Ems River for sea trials after which it will be handed over to DCL.

Haunted Mansion bar is coming to Disney’s new cruise ship

Among spaces coming to the ship are bars inspired by the Haunted Mansion, Jungle Cruise and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea theme park attractions and an Aladdin-themed Grand Hall atrium. Its top deck will once again feature the AquaMouse water coaster-dark ride combo. One new dining venue on board will be themed to the Pixar movie “Coco.”

Construction recently began on a third sister ship in what was originally referred to as the Trident class that will be named Disney Destiny.

“The Disney Treasure and the Disney Destiny will soon be next to each other in the shipyard, marking an unprecedented era of growth for Disney Cruise Line,” the post reads.

The three ships along with the purchase of the unfinished Global Dream cruise ship that DCL acquired in 2023 and was renamed Disney Adventure will grow the DCL fleet to eight vessels by the end of 2025.

Disney Adventure is headed for the Asia market, and Disney Destiny’s first home port has yet to be announced.

Disney’s first two ships, Disney Magic and Wonder, debuted in 1998 and 1999, followed by sister ships Disney Dream and Fantasy in 2011 and 2012.

The doubling of the fleet from four to eight vessels in three years coincides with the debut of a new private Bahamas destination set to open this summer called Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point on the tip of the island of Eleuthera.

The line has also expanded its year-round presence in Florida with not only its main home port out of Port Canaveral, but a new second Florida home base out of Port Everglades that opened last fall.

Disneyland is changing its gas cars at Autopia, reports say

FILE -- Autopia, part of Disney’s Tomorrowland, welcomes kids to experience driving for the...

ANAHEIM, Calif. (Gray News) - Autopia , a gas-powered attraction located within Disneyland’s Tomorrowland, is reportedly going electric.

According to the Los Angeles Times , the gasoline engines on the fleet of cars are on their way out at Disney’s Autopia.

“As the industry moves toward alternative fuel sources, we have developed a roadmap to electrify this attraction and are evaluating technology that will enable us to convert from gas engines in the next few years,” the publication quoted Jessica Good, a Disney spokesperson.

The classic attraction at Disneyland opened in 1955 and has been popular among children who have gotten to experience driving for the first time.

A timeline for the project was not immediately released.

This week’s news comes as Disneyland continues to make changes and renovations at the theme park.

Construction continues on the new attraction Tiana’s Bayou Adventure and construction walls can be seen around the Haunted Mansion attraction, according to reports.

Last month, Disney got approval from Anaheim city officials to expand the California resort over the next four decades.

Disney officials shared crews are also working to revamp the entryway gates at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure.

Disney cruise review: Is a Disney cruise worth the expense?

What it's like on board a Disney Wonder cruise. Photo / Supplied

Disney Wonder, one of 5 (soon to be 7) Disney Cruise Line ships, is returning to New Zealand in October. Is it worth booking?

Expectation: A Disney cruise costs a lot of money

The cheapest Disney cruise you can book on board the Disney Wonder when it returns to NZ from October 2024 to February 2025, is a two-night round trip from Auckland in an interior room, priced around NZ$960 per person. A big Disney blowout comes in at roughly $7000 per person for a five-night sailing in a Concierge Room, fully kitted out with a separate bedroom, living room and a walk-in wardrobe. In between these two fares, you’ll find Oceanview rooms with a porthole and Veranda rooms with a balcony. *Price correct at time of writing but subject to change.

Click here to read more about a Veranda Stateroom aboard Disney Wonder

Reality: It’s great value

While there are cheaper cruises out there, no cruise line is quite as family-focused as Disney, and that’s where Captain Mickey earns his higher price tag. A better way to describe a Disney Cruise is child-focused because they really do put their pint-sized guests first. There’s a mass of dedicated (and multi-age range) kids clubs, including a nursery for babies as young as 6 months, several swimming pools, cinemas, theatres, help-yourself-icecream, free-flowing soft drinks, deck parties and discos. Disney characters parade every corridor and entertainment is around the clock. All this (and more) is covered in your fare, alongside every meal, copious snacks and 24-hour room service. When you start adding up the “land” price of stage shows and three-course dining experiences, as well as the price of an international return flight you don’t have to pay for, the cost looks pretty good.

Top tip: It’s possible to keep spending to a minimum once onboard. Gratuities are additional, and customary, but avoiding alcoholic drinks, specialty dining, Wi-Fi packages and the gift shop (good luck!) will help.

Add up the price of every on-board show and themed experience, and a Disney cruise is good value. Photo / Supplied

Expectation: A Disney cruise is for kids

If your 6-year-old could design their ideal holiday, it would probably resemble a Disney cruise, complete with character meet-and-greets, hot dogs for dinner, Spider-Man encounters and a non-existent bedtime. We imagine if parents designed their perfect holiday, there would be palm trees and infinity pools, champagne on ice, afternoon naps and child-free bliss. And Goofy ain’t serving the mimosas, is he?

Reality: Adults love it

Anything Disney-related is undeniably a dream come true for children; none more so than meeting your favourite Disney characters in real life. A child’s excitement is to be expected. What’s surprising is how easily parents break the shackles of adulthood. Like Robin Williams’ transformation in the hit movie Hook , you’ll unexpectedly find yourself reborn as an enchanted younger self. Childhood memories will flood back with an intoxicating amount of nostalgia (such as picking your favourite Disney VHS and — shock horror for anyone born after 1996 — rewinding the tape! Long-forgotten Minnie Mouse toys; trying not to cry in front of your mates while watching The Lion King . Et cetera). Disney is a 100-year-old institution and there is no one on Earth immune to its magic.

Top tip : There’s also the dedicated adults-only area featuring a serene, splash-free swimming pool, hot tubs, Cove cafe and Palo, an a la carte Italian restaurant. With several youth clubs on board, you can easily make sulks and snotty noses a Mickey problem, not a parent problem.

Expectation: The pools will be crowded with children

Let’s hazard a guess, you’re expecting screaming children, toddlers throwing tantrums, pool bombs, and dare we mention it, a code brown.

Reality: Calm, calm, everywhere

Perhaps Captain Hook makes the most heinous kids walk the plank, but I found Disney Wonder to be a sanctuary of calm. Of course, you can find pockets of hyperactivity, notably if you want to queue to meet headline acts such as Mickey and Minnie, but overall, my family and I stole moments to ourselves all the time. On the first day, we had the entire top deck to ourselves, presumably while other families lunched, we often found the French Quarter Lounge empty, save for a live band and a sprinkling of grandparents; we walked the deck at sunset and barely saw a soul, and while our son napped, we enjoyed the sanctum of our Veranda Stateroom, with Disney movies on tap, and a delightful man who comes around at 1pm with treats. Never devoured a plate of macarons in bed? Do it — nothing says “holiday” more than crumbs you don’t have to vacuum.

Top tip: You’re never going to escape the madness of a Frozen stage show or a themed dinner with a life-size, trumpet-playing crocodile, but the beauty of a Disney cruise is that no matter how much of your body mass is Grinch, happy children are a happy sight.

Expectation: I won’t feel my child is safe on a cruise ship

Welcome to parenthood where intrusive thoughts reign supreme. Such as ― how am I going to sleep soundly in a room with a toddler that’s obsessed with opening doors? He’s going to karate chop his way out of the cot, swing off the door handle and pole vault into the sea.

Reality: Safety is Disney’s No 1 priority

The Disney Wonder cruise ship seems to have been designed for kids, by kids. It wouldn’t be unreasonable to assume Disney commissioned a gaggle of wayward children to run amok across a dummy ship to assess their reckless, highly unpredictable behaviour. We didn’t need to worry about our son once. If you’re in a Veranda Stateroom, the balcony doors are heavy — Fort Knox for a 2-year-old, and there’s an additional lock at the top, above your own head height, so there’s no way Houdini is picking his way out of there. In addition, all passengers participate in a compulsory safety drill, there are countless lifeguards on duty and a staff of 1000 team members all making your safety their top priority.

Top tip: Don’t stress the small stuff. The lady at craft hour gave my son felt-tip pens and he can’t stay within the lines — or on the paper — for toffee. They were the world’s most washable Crayola pens.

The Disney Wonder cruise ship is better than bulletproof, it’s childproof. Photo / Supplied

Expectation: The itinerary just says ‘at sea’.

Some itineraries don’t have any port stops so there won’t be any sightseeing.

Reality: There’s an app for that

Who needs a destination when 1700 guests are dressed up as pirates and Captain Hook is chasing Smee around the atrium with a sword? There is so much to do on a Disney cruise that there’s an app detailing hour-by-hour activities. In between all those already mentioned, from stage shows to character encounters, there are trivia quizzes and bingo games, dance parties and DJs. The adults-only area is home to a Cadillac Bar and an English-style pub called Crown and Fin with chessboards and board games. Adults can also partake in workshops such as beer tasting and chocolate and liquor tasting (for a fee). There are regular parties such as Pirate Night and Marvel characters gallivanting across the top deck. Disney Cruise Line is the only cruise company in the world with a fireworks show, and every dining venue showcases something unique and memorable. Our favourite experience was Animator’s Palate, an interactive dining room where what you draw before dinner later appears on the walls as a cartoon. Boredom is simply not possible.

Top tip: Download the app and study what’s happening the next day, the evening prior. Try to visit the Disney Cruise website before your trip so you’re not overwhelmed by the sheer amount of things to do.

Top hacks for parents with small kids

  • The first time you drop the kids off at a club, go 15 minutes early to fill in the forms and get a wristband sorted — it also gives younger kids some time to assess their new surroundings and doesn’t eat into your time allocated for mum and dad.
  • Children have no patience for a queue, right? When the characters leave the photo areas, they tend to walk down Deck 5, past the play centres and nursery. Wait there for a quick meet-and-greet instead.
  • I’m not saying try it, but twice we spilled coffee on an armchair and both times it vanished with a wet wipe. Disney Wonder is better than bulletproof, it’s childproof.
  • Look out for the Diaper Dash and enter your baby/toddler into the greatest baby crawling race at sea!
