Lynn received Kennedy Center Honors in 2003 and a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013. She has won four Grammy Awards (including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010) and sold more than 45 million records worldwide. ( Source )

Butcher Holler is in Johnson County, Kentucky and home of the world’s most famous coal miner’s daughter, Loretta Lynn. Her birthplace and family home is nestled between two fog shrouded mountains up a “holler” in Van Lear, Kentucky.

Loretta, her sisters Patsy and Crystal Gayle, sang songs with attitude and pride. They brought their brand of country music to an admiring public, and gained fame and fortune for themselves and new respect for coal miners everywhere.

Butcher Holler

Butcher Holler, Kentucky is Hallowed Ground Every Country Fan Should Visit at Least Once

The coal mining town of Butcher Holler (or Butcher Hollow), Kentucky, is the birthplace of country music legend Loretta Lynn . Her home and the town in general not only got some love throughout her music career but became a tourist attraction that you can visit today. It's a must-see for any country fan to see Lynn's humble beginnings before she became one of the greatest voices in the history of country music.

The home is located in Johnson County, which Lynn honored in her timeless hit, "Coal Miner's Daughter." Her song also mentions the larger town of Van Lear, where Butcher Holler is located. The country singer was the eldest daughter and second born to her mother and coal miner father, Clary and Ted Webb. Now, the "holler" is what remains of the formerly thriving coal mining community.

Loretta Webb and her seven siblings lived in their "cabin on a hill" off their father's coal mining salary, but he did his best to ensure everyone felt loved and had food on the table. Loretta left home at 15 when she got married and went on to become a massive star. Her sister Crystal Gayle also found success as a country music singer, making their childhood home in the tiny town in Kentucky a tourist destination for longtime fans.

If you find yourself in Eastern Kentucky and want to stop into Loretta Lynn's home, then you'll need to also stop at Webb's Grocery in Van Lear. The 100-year-old store was owned and maintained by Lynn's brother Herman Webb until his death in 2018. Initially an old coal mining camp store, you'll be able to bring home some keepsakes and snacks. The actual home has guided tours that are only $5, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. every day of the week, with no reservations required. Lynn's brother Herman even gave the tours himself, with other family members stepping in when he's unavailable. He undoubtedly had numerous stories about his famous sisters growing up singing on the front porch, having no idea what the future held.

The inside of the home also contains numerous original family items ranging from their mother's washboard, bed, and more. The fee for the tour has remained $5 for years, keeping true to the family's humble beginnings. This isn't a flashy tourist attraction like Graceland, but that's part of the charm Butcher Holler has to offer fans of the late, great Loretta Lynn.

Let’s Take a Virtual Tour to Butcher Hollar Kentucky and Visit Loretta Lynn’s Birthplace

If you've got about five minutes, let's take a trip back in time to Butcher Hollar, Kentucky, near the little town of Van Lear, and visit the childhood home of Loretta Lynn. A couple of Yankee friends of mine with their camera rolling made the short drive out of my Johnson County home town of Paintsville, a few miles down to Hagar Hill, through West Van Lear and Van Lear, and along the beautiful Miller's Creek Drive (an awesome drive through the Appalachian foothills) to Butcher Hollar.

If you saw the movie "Coal Miner's Daughter" or heard the song by Loretta Lynn, you already know that's where Loretta, Crystal Gayle and all the rest of the Webb clan spent their childhood.

Over the years most of Loretta's family made their way out of Butcher Hollar, like so many other folks in that area do. However, one fellow that stayed was Loretta's younger brother Herman Webb. For many years he ran the old coal camp company store down at the mouth of Butcher Hollar; and for $5.00 he would meet you a short distance up the hollar and give you a guided tour of the old original country home where he and Loretta grew up. Herman was 83 when he died a couple of years ago; but let's go back to when he was still giving tours. Herman was such a laid back fellow, it's hard to believe he had such world famous siblings.

The four minute video starts with the turn off on Miller Creek Road...

COVID 19 has kept the family from giving tours but when the pandemic is over, you may want to take a drive to Johnson County and visit Van Lear and Butcher Hollar. Except for strip mines, not too much coal comes out of the Van Lear coal camp anymore. But you can still visit the old company store and grab a sandwich, a moon pie and RC. Someone will be available to take you up to the family home and show you around.

If you saw the 1980  Emmy award winning movie "Coal Miner's Daughter" you saw scenes portrayed in the house but those scenes were not filmed in Butcher Hollar. If you watched the video above, you will see why. The road up Miller's Creek to the house is very narrow making it difficult to get the trucks carrying movie equipment to the Webb home. The movie producers also wanted to cut a road up the hill that the house is located on so their cameras and other equipment could be moved close. The Webb family didn't like that idea so all of the scenes involving Loretta's home were filmed at a replica house the movie company constructed near Whitesburg. That replica of Lynn’s Butcher Hollow homeplace, built at Bottom Fork, has since been burned by arsonists. Except for a Van Lear train scene, the rest of the film was made in the Whitesburg-Wise Virginia area.

The admission to Loretta's homeplace is still just $5.00 and you can take all the photos you want.

You might also want to visit the wonderful coal museum in Van Lear. It's well worth your time.

Loretta Lynn Homeplace tours continue in Butcher Hollow

JOHNSON COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - Tours at country music legend Loretta Lynn’s homeplace are back open after being closed last year due to the pandemic.

”My favorite thing was that her niece gave the tour,” said Dan Zoeller from Louisville. “So, she had a lot of insight into the family and she could tell some stories.”

Fans were eager to return to the Butcher Holler after tours were put on hold for more than a year.

“People coming in from out of state, we did not want to increase the chances of spreading COVID down here,” said Loretta’s niece Hermalee Hale.

Tours reopened in early July, but before they could reopen, they had to clean up a tree that fell from an ice storm earlier this year. Hale said it almost hit the outhouse. The weather also caused ruts in the driveway.

“We had people coming up here anyway, you know, climbing the hill past the gates and stuff,” said Hale. “Just to come to the house.”

Fans can now step inside to see the life of Lynn told by pictures and artifacts left behind.

“When she [Loretta] would come back here to visit, I mean she would come back here to just sit on the front porch,” added Hale. “They see how peaceful it is.”

“A big sense of history and take yourself back to what it would have been like to live there,” said Zoeller. “I was amazed it was so well preserved.”

Tours are offered seven days a week from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Here, fans can tour the cabin that Loretta Lynn was raised in, and where her sister, singer Crystal Gayle, spent the first few years of her life. Original furnishings remain in the house and some of Lynn's family members provide tours of the cabin, sharing personal stories of the country music icon. Backstory and Context

Butcher Hollow (or Holler) is what remains of a once thriving coal mining community in Johnson County, located in Eastern Kentucky. It is most known for being the childhood home of country music icon Loretta Lynn, and the birthplace of her sister Crystal Gayle. Loretta Lynn's most memorable song "Coal Miner's Daughter" is about her childhood in Butcher Holler, where she grew up poor but in a large family full of love. Her father, Melvyn "Ted" Webb, worked for the Consolidation Coal Company in Van Lear. Ted and his wife Clara Ramey Webb raised eight children in their small cabin in Butcher Holler, including Loretta, who was the second child and oldest daughter. The youngest child in the Webb family, Brenda (later to become Crystal Gayle), was born in Paintsville, but the family moved to Indiana when she was 4. As a child, Loretta loved singing in church and to her young siblings on the front porch swing, but her happy childhood came to an end when she married Oliver (Mooney) V. Lynn, Jr. at the age of 15. Soon after, Loretta and Mooney relocated to Washington state, where she had four children in quick succession. Mooney noticed a unique talent in Loretta when she sang their children to sleep at night, and in the late 1950s, the struggling housewife began performing in local venues. Her career took off in 1960 when her song "I'm A Honky Tonk Girl" became a hit. The Lynn family then moved to Tennessee and Loretta signed a contract with Decca Records.

Loretta Lynn has contributed much more to the country music industry than just providing good songs. She ushered in a new image for female artists by writing about the struggles of women, covering topics from cheating husbands to birth control pills. In 1970 Loretta released her most well-known song "Coal Miner's Daughter," inspired by her early life in that cabin in Butcher Holler. The song instantly hit Number 1, and Lynn later released a bestselling book by the same title. In 1980, the movie Coal Miner's Daughter starring Sissy Spacek was released, earning Spacek an Oscar. Loretta's youngest sister Crystal Gayle also went on to have a successful career in the music industry, releasing hits such as "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue" and "Talking In Your Sleep."

Loretta Lynn's HomePlace in Butcher Holler is now seen as a beacon in Van Lear. Fans of Loretta and her sister Crystal travel from all over the world to make the trek up to Butcher Holler to experience for themselves the place that inspired Lynn's hit song. For more than 30 years, Loretta's younger brother Herman Webb provided tours of the cabin, regaling visitors with stories about his parents and growing up with Loretta and Crystal. Since his death, his children and grandchildren have continued providing tours, still relaying the same stories. Inside the cabin, visitors will see tons of Loretta Lynn memorabilia, original pieces of furniture, and the washboard Loretta's mother Clara would use to wash clothes on. After a tour, visitors can stop off at Webb's General Store, once a coal mining camp store. Loretta Lynn returned to Butcher Holler in 2015, where she was photographed for the cover of her 2016 album, "Full Circle."Loretta Lynn's HomePlace is a must-see for any fan of country music and the "coal miner's daughter."

Kentucky Country Music

Loretta lynn’s friends continue to help with hometown rising concert.

The iconic Grand Ole Opry House stage was home to a night of heartfelt tributes and uplifting moments on Monday, September 13, as some of Music City’s finest came together to support flood relief efforts spearheaded by Country music icon Loretta Lynn during  Loretta Lynn’s Friends: Hometown Rising . Total funds raised are being tallied now, with 100% of proceeds directly supporting United Way of Humphreys County and the citizens impacted by the devastating floods that rushed through the area on August 21, claiming the lives of 20 people and destroying hundreds of homes.

Reigning CMA Male Vocalist of the Year Luke Combs kicked off the evening with uplifting performances of “Forever After All” and “Beer Never Broke My Heart,” noting, “I live in midwestern Tennessee myself… and I started seeing all the devastation that happened out where I live. When I got the call from Loretta, I said ‘whatever I need to do, I’m there. I want to help.’ So thank you all for being here tonight.”

loretta lynn hometown tour

Three-time GRAMMY Award winners Little Big Town followed suit, keeping the energy climbing with their hits “Wine, Beer, Whiskey” and “Boondocks” before the incomparable Reba McEntire shared a touching performance of “I’m A Survivor,” pausing to reflect on the emotion of the evening prior to bringing fans to their feet with her beloved hit “Fancy.”

loretta lynn hometown tour

“Thank y’all so much for being here tonight,” said McEntire. “It means the world to Loretta and all the folks west of town. I hope we don’t ever have to go through this again. I hope the next time we gather like this it’s for a fun, joyous time. But let’s make it a fun, joyous time and celebrate the ones who are surviving, send the ones on home that have left us, and we’ll continue on with good country music and families and friends and neighbors joining together to help each other.”

While giving the impacted families of Humphreys County in the audience at the Opry House a musical respite from the heavy moments of the past few weeks, the evening hosted by SiriusXM’s Storme Warren and Apple Music’s Nada also paid tribute to the tragedy they endured with a series of meaningful packages throughout the programing; spotlighting the memory of those lost as well as the resiliency of the community and the ongoing needs that funds raised Monday night will support.

“This situation compares to nothing like we’ve ever been through before,” noted Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis during an emotional look at the devastation and tribute to the lives lost. “We’ve still got a long way to go. It’s gonna take everything that we can put together to keep moving forward. When tragedy or something happens and the rubber meets the road, our people come out. We had a lot of agencies come in; it didn’t matter what patch you wore, what badge you wore, everybody found a place and helped. You start hearing the stories of the people that you’re around every day, and to see the overwhelming love and support that came out, was amazing – truly amazing.”

loretta lynn hometown tour

Another particularly touching moment of the evening took place during the next performance as reigning ACM Entertainer of the Year Luke Bryan paused after his No. 1 hit “Most People Are Good” to introduce sentimental song “Drink A Beer,” noting “I tell people all the time, ‘I’m a Georgia boy but Tennessee is my home.” He became choked up while sharing his own firsthand experience visiting the Humphreys County town of Waverly in the days following the flood, declaring, “we won’t forget you Waverly. Let’s make sure we fix it just like it was; a beautiful small town in Tennessee.”

loretta lynn hometown tour

Chris Janson then shared his own emotional ties to Humphreys County – reflecting on the Sheriff’s comments and video footage of the devastation, noting, “I’ve spent a lot of time in Humphreys County… when you see your friends and neighbors, it just gives it a whole new perspective and I hadn’t seen it like I just saw it there” – before bringing his trademark energy to the Opry House with a rousing rendition of his No. 1 hit, “Good Vibes.”

loretta lynn hometown tour

Spotify’s “Hot Country Artist to Watch” Brittney Spencer then paid tribute to the event’s namesake herself with a vivacious take on “You Ain’t Woman Enough (To Take My Man)” followed by her original song “Compassion,” dedicating the performance to a Humphreys County survivor she met earlier in the evening and summarizing the night perfectly as she sang, “ Trynna make the world a better place / It’s usually just a helping hand / An open mind, the will to stand .”

loretta lynn hometown tour

Making his debut on the Opry stage, BRELAND followed suit with his reflective single “Cross Country,” followed by international superstar Keith Urban taking the stage and encouraging fans to sing along with two of his many hits accompanied only by his own famed guitar skills; “Wasted Time” and “Blue Ain’t Your Color.”

loretta lynn hometown tour

Urban then paused as he removed his guitar strap and reached for a Sharpie, noting, “this is  the volunteer state, so I want to do my bit and sign this guitar” as he brought his wife, Nicole Kidman, to the stage to add her autograph as well as BRELAND for his own before the two led the house in an all-sing of the Bill Withers classic, “Lean On Me.”

loretta lynn hometown tour

The spontaneous guitar donation was then auctioned off during the following commercial break, joining two autographed show posters that garnered $20,000 in a live auction earlier in the night. As bidding peaked at $36,000, the next artist due on stage made an early appearance to increase the leading bid, with seven-time CMA Entertainer of the Year Garth Brooks declaring, “let’s double it; $75,000!”

The night concluded with a grand finale as Brooks returned to the stage with Trisha Yearwood for a medley of famous duets, from Lynn’s own classic with Conway Twitty, “After the Fire is Gone” to Tammy Wynette and George Jones’ “Golden Ring” and the GRAMMY Award-winning couple’s own “Whiskey to Wine.” Brooks then stepped back to accompany Yearwood on guitar as she performed her classic hit, “She’s In Love With the Boy” before the night ended with the crowd on their feet singing every word to “Friends In Low Places.”

loretta lynn hometown tour

Echoing the words of Urban, Brooks capped off the night with a call to action for the audience in the Opry House and watching at home, proclaiming, “they call it the volunteer state; thank you for all your help, all your love, all your prayers. It’s going to take all of us, people!”

In addition to the artists on stage at the Grand Ole Opry House, the program also featured recorded appearances from several other Country stars, as Tracy Lawrence, Carly Pearce, Thomas Rhett, Kid Rock, Darius Rucker and Carrie Underwood called on fans to support the important recovery work being done by United Way of Humphreys County. Several major donations were also announced during the evening, with City National Bank and Lawrence’s “Mission:Possible” charity both contributing and the Academy of Country Music matching $25,000 of fan donations in honor of Lynn being named one of this year’s ACM Poet’s Award recipients at the recent ACM Honors.

In an effort to continue fundraising throughout the coming weeks, Lynn has also partnered with Kendra Scott to garner additional support for the cause, with the jewelry company donating 50% of proceeds from the sale of their  Tennessee Guitar charm  throughout the month of September to United Way of Humphreys County. The charm is available for purchase at KendraScott.com or in  retail locations .

Loretta Lynn’s Hometown Rising Concert Raises More Than $900K for Flood Relief

Garth Brooks ,  Trisha Yearwood ,  Luke Bryan ,  Luke Combs  and more came together on Sept. 13 for a monumental benefit concert that raised money for middle Tennesseans in need. Loretta Lynn shares that her Hometown Rising concert was a huge success, pulling in more than $900,000 and counting.

The tally sits at $933,000, Lynn revealed on Thursday  (Sept. 16). The United Way of Humphreys County will distribute that money to those in need after an Aug. 21 disaster that killed 20, left more that 270 homes destroyed and damaged more than 500 structures.

Donations are still being accepted. Text TNFLOODRELIEF to 44321 to pitch in.

Lynn didn't attend the concert, but says she loved the performances, and while some of the images and video footage are heartbreaking, she appreciates seeing the resilience of her community. The Loretta Lynn Ranch took a hit from heavy rains and floods, and her ranch foreman, Wayne Spears, was killed in the tragedy.

"I've heard from so many friends that the show Monday night that my friends put together for our community not only raised money, but it also raised spirits after a long few weeks of loss and heartbreak," Lynn says.

Chris Janson ,  Little Big Town ,  Reba McEntire ,  Brittney Spencer ,  Breland  and  Keith Urban  also performed on Monday night. The sold-out show was livestreamed from the Grand Ole Opry on multiple Circle TV platforms. It's available for replay for a limited time below.

Emmy Russell: Stunning Original Song "Want You"

American Idol contestant Emmy Russell is a coal miner’s great-granddaughter, and she paid homage to her grandmother, the late Country Music Hall of Famer Loretta Lynn , on Monday’s (April 29) episode of the talent competition.

Loretta lynn’s granddaughter emmy russell blows away ‘american idol’ with moving….

On Monday night, Russell advanced to the top seven on the show. For her Idol audition, Russell performed her own original song called “Skinny.” Throughout her time on the show so far, she’s also performed covers of Blink-182’s “All the Small Things” and Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me.”

Russell previously told People of a special moment just prior to her Idol performance of “Coal Miner’s Daughter.” “I think just closing my eyes and telling her, ‘I’m proud of you.’ I did that in rehearsal. I was like, ‘I’m proud of you.’ I want people to feel proud of their story, where they’ve come from, and I hope that that song made them feel like, ‘Oh, I can be proud of where I come from.’ I’m just really grateful.”

Loretta Lynn died at age 90 on Oct. 4, 2022. Lynn earned 16 chart-toppers on what is now the Hot Country Songs chart and was the first woman to win entertainer of the year at the CMA Awards. She was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1988. Lynn’s 1976 autobiography Coal Miner’s Daughter was later adapted for the big screen, with Sissy Spacek in the lead role as Lynn in the 1980 movie. Spacek won an Academy Award for her role as Lynn. In 2021, Lynn issued her 46th solo studio album,  Still Woman Enough .

Russell is following in the family tradition, as her mother Patsy has also been involved in music. Patsy teamed with her sister Peggy to form the duo The Lynns in the 1990s and earned CMA Awards nominations for vocal duo of the year in 1998 and 1999.

Emmy Russell Performs ‘Jaw-Drop’ Cover of Grandma Loretta Lynn’s ‘Coal Miner’s Daughter’

By Tomás Mier

Emmy Russell is honoring her “memaw” Loretta Lynn with her latest performance. During Monday’s episode of American Idol , the young musician performed a piano-backed cover of Loretta Lynn’s “ Coal Miner’s Daughter ” that moved much of the crowd (including Katy Perry) to tears.

Russell — who’s competing on the newest season of American Idol — took the stage behind the piano to slow down and transform Lynn’s classic to match her own musical style. With Monday’s episode, Russell heads to the Top 7 of the singing competition show.

“I think this was the first time that I said, ‘I’m proud.’ I’m proud to be in this family ’cause with the family comes a blessing, but with it comes a curse,” Russell told People after the performance. “I think just closing my eyes and telling her, ‘I’m proud of you.’ I did that in rehearsal… I want people to feel proud of their story, where they’ve come from… I’m just really grateful.”

“It’s like you want to forge your own path and I think she has,” Perry said. “I knew she was going to ace it because she’s sang it a thousand times. She really did, and it was just a jaw-drop moment.”

Russell told Rolling Stone last month that she felt a responsibility to carry her grandmother’s legacy in music, but admitted that she would do so while embracing her own style.

“Maybe there is a legacy there that I can carry, but in a different way than what I thought,” Russell said. “I thought I had to be just like her. I feel like I’m more like her [now] than I was whenever I was trying to be like her.”

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.

American Idol’s Emmy Russell Honors Memaw Loretta Lynn With Breathtaking “Coal Miner’s Daughter” Performance

T his season’s American Idol hopefuls are fighting harder than ever as the May 19 finale draws closer. On Sunday (April 28), pop-country queen Shania Twain stopped by to mentor the top 10. Each contestant vied for their spot in the top 8 by singing a hit from the year they were born. After the viewers had their say, Emmy Russell was among the singers advancing to the next round.

Emmy Russell Performance on ‘American Idol’

No one has ever questioned Emmy Russell’s country bona fides. Her grandmother, Loretta Lynn, blazed a trail for women in country music with hits like “Coal Miner’s Daughter” and “The Pill.” Russell has talked about spending her childhood riding on the tour bus with “Memaw.” After spending time in Brazil as a Christian missionary, the 25-year-old Tennessee native finally decided to embrace the “gift” Lynn had always insisted she had.

“All the time, she’d be like, ‘When are you going to come back and do what you’re made to do?’” Russell said. “She would always say, ‘If you have these gifts, don’t bury them under a rug. Use them.’”

Russell has brought Idol viewers to tears with emotional original tunes like “Skinny.” She has also brought her own distinct flavor to unlikely hits like Blink-182’s “All the Small Things.”

Russell’s main obstacle this season has been her own timid nature. Guest mentor Shania Twain helped the aspiring sing overcome her nerves this week — after the two had finished fangirling over one another.

“I freaked out,” Russell said on the show. “She’s literally the queen of pop country.”

Twain was equally starstruck. “There’s no Shania Twain without Loretta Lynn,” the “Any Man of Mine” singer said. “Emmy is her own talent, but it’s still very surreal.”

During rehearsals, Twain encouraged Russell to “go for the yodel.” That may seem like a bold choice for a pop-punk number, but the Idol judges loved it.

“If you would’ve told me a month and a half ago one of your best vocals would be a Blink-182 song.,” judge Luke Bryan said . “That’s what so fun about this show.”

Judge Katy Perry commented that “comfortable looks good on you.” “You’re really growing into this,” the “Part of Me” singer said.
