15 Best Things to Do in Kitchener (Ontario, Canada)

Kitchener is a lovely city with a small town vibe that is located in in the Saint Lawrence Lowlands of Southwestern Ontario. The former German Mennonite town is now a thriving city with a lot of European heritage, much of which can be seen today.

Kitchener is a culturally rich city with loads to offer any visitor. Still, it is often missed by many, though its proximity to Toronto makes it an excellent choice for anyone that wants to explore a different kind of city. If you do find yourself contemplating visiting, here are the best things to do in Kitchener :

1. Have fun at a museum

THEMUSEUM

Some may not think of a museum as ‘fun’, but THEMUSEUM is all about having fun. The museum is an interactive museum that is predominately aimed at kids.

Children of all ages can practice their graffiti skills on a wall, create an animation film, construct a fort, lie on a bed of nails or dance on a giant piano. There is also a 125 gallon fish tank, an indoor garden and a few art installation pieces.

In addition to the permanent exhibitions, there are also temporary ones that offer loads more fun to museum visitors. The museum also hosts special events on holidays, like Cinco De Mayo, St Patrick’s Day and Halloween.

2. Drink like you would in Germany

Oktoberfest

Yes, that is correct, drinking is a favourite pastime in Kitchener, especially considering its German heritage. But what’s more is that the city has the world’s largest Oktoberfest outside of Berlin.

The Bavarian festival is held every year in October and lasts nine days, starting the Friday before Canadian Thanksgiving. Around 700,000 people come to the festival each year.

Drinking copious amounts of beer is the main theme of Oktoberfest, although there are also cultural activities that go on. The most well-known non-drinking event is the Oktoberfest Thanksgiving Day Parade.

3. Go back in time

Doon Heritage Village

See what life was like in the region in 1914 at the Doon Heritage Village. This 24 hectare living history village is filled with homes from the era that have been removed, restored and rebuilt here.

Go back in time as you walk around the village and admire what life was like then. There are barns and other buildings, and staff is dressed up in costumes from the time.

There is a post office, a grocery store, a sawmill, a harness shop and a fire hall at the Doon Heritage Village, amongst many other things. Explore the buildings, watch the farm animals being fed and wander around the beautiful gardens.

4. Go skiing

Chicopee Ski Club

The Chicopee Ski Club features 11 runs for all different levels. Whether you are a pro or a beginner you can go skiing while in Kitchener. It is also possible to go snowboarding and tubing.

The ski club actually officially changed its name to the Chicopee Ski & Summer Resort. This means it is open year round.

Visit in the summer and go mountain biking or hiking, or climb its 9.1 metre high rock-climbing wall. There are also volleyball and tennis courts onsite.

5. Spend a day in a park

Victoria Park

Right in Downtown Kitchener is a beautiful park; the Victoria Park. This is also the oldest park in the city and it is a great place to spend a day.

The park was designed by the same people that designed New York’s Central Park, complete with a lake and lovely gardens. Other features include a clock tower, a bronze statue of Queen Victoria and a bandstand.

Bring a picnic to the park or enjoy a meal at its onsite restaurant. Don’t forget to stroll along the pathways and breathe in the fresh air.

6. Play a round of golf

Rockway Golf Course

It seems that no matter where you go there is sure to be a golf course nearby, and the same is true in Kitchener. There are two golf courses in the city that will please any golfer, both of which are championship courses.

The Doon Valley sits right next to the Grand River and has an 18-hole and 9-hole course, as well as a Pitch ‘n Putt course. After playing a round or practicing your swing, grab a bite to eat and/or a beer at the restaurant.

The 18-hole, par-70 Rockway Golf Course was designed by Stanley Thompson. It is known to be one of the finest public courses in all of Ontario.

7. Stroll through a graveyard

Mount Hope Cemetery

This seems a bit dark, but a stroll through Mount Hope Cemetery is also a walk through history. The cemetery is the oldest in the city and where many notable people lie.

In addition to headstones, the cemetery also has some historic monuments within it that date back to the 1700s. There are politicians, prominent historic business leaders and entrepreneurs that lay in the cemetery.

Guided walking tours are available of Mount Hope Cemetery, or download a map and tour around it yourself. There are three designated tours that guide you through the historic cemetery.

8. Grab a bite to eat

Farmers’ Market

Regardless of what you fancy, there is sure to be a restaurant that appeals to you. Kitchener is not big, but it does have a great selection of places to eat.

The downtown area has the most options and the most variety in terms of cuisine. Greek, Japanese, Caribbean, Chinese and Ethiopian cuisine are all available, as is, or course, German fare.

If you want to eat on the cheap, head to a food court in a shopping mall. There is also a farmers’ market that is great for grabbing fresh fruit or a quick snack.

9. Look at art

The Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery

Kitchener is a culturally rich city. And with that comes a great art gallery; the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery.

The Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery showcases contemporary art by both Canadian and international artists. A great thing about the gallery is that it is partnered with a few others that loan their work to each other, broadening the art that is on display.

In addition to displaying permanent pieces, the gallery also has special exhibits and events. It also hosts art programs for adults, children and families.

10. Enjoy a show

Centre In The Square

There are a few venues in the city for watching a theatrical play, a musical or the symphony. Some are small community theatres, while others are large 2,000+ seat venues.

The biggest venue in Kitchener is Centre In The Square, which is a theatre and performing arts centre in the downtown area. The theatre is best known for being the home of the K-W Symphony and for its Broadway shows.

The Registry Theatre is a small theatre that features inexpensive performances. There is also the community Conrad Centre for the Performing Arts, Lost&Found Theatre Company and the Kitchener-Waterloo Little Theatre, which is the oldest in the city.

11. Get involved with the culture

KOI Music Festival

Meaning, go to a festival, in which there are many, most of which are culturally based. Oktoberfest is the biggest, though there are also a few other great ones that should not be missed.

If you are a music fan, come for the three-day KOI Music Festival in September, which features over 100 bands. If you can’t make that one, go to the Kultrun World Music Festival in July.

The two-day Kitchener-Waterloo Multicultural Festival is also great. The festival has been running for over 50 years and features food, music and dance from all over the world.

12. Learn about the city’s history

Joseph Schneider Haus

This can be done at the Waterloo Region Museum, which showcases over 12,000 years of the history of the area. It can also be done by visiting historic sites.

One of these is the Joseph Schneider Haus that was built in 1816 and today is a living museum. Homer Watson House & Gallery is another, which is the former home of the Canadian landscape painter.

Another great one is the Woodside National Historic Site, which is the childhood home of former Canadian Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King. The house was built in 1853 and in additional to the Victorian era home, also features stunning gardens and lawns.

13. Be Harry Houdini

Adventure Rooms

Enjoy live games and get your adrenaline going at the Adventure Rooms. There are four different rooms, each of which allows you to do Houdini type escapes.

At the Adventure Rooms you have to escape or break free from a room you are locked in before the 60-minute clock turns to zero. This is done by searching for codes, keys and other clues.

Up to seven people can play on a team together. They also can accommodate larger groups that will complete against each other.

14. Surround yourself in nature

Huron Natural Area

Any nature lover should spend time at the Huron Natural Area. The 107-hectare area is great for hiking, photographing and just enjoying the natural surroundings.

The Huron Natural Area is home to streams, meadows, forests and wetlands. There are also several hiking trails and boardwalks, as well as lookout areas where you can truly take in the spectacular scenery.

Trails run through the forest, the meadow, the woodland and along Strasburg Creek. All of these trails stem from one main asphalt trail that starts at the main access area.

15. Shop till you drop

Fairview Park Mall

Like any city, Kitchener also has its fair share of places where you can spend your money. Downtown is where you will find independent shops, while the Fairview Park Mall is the place to go for brands.

Fairview Park Mall is the largest mall in the region, having large shops like Walmart, The Bay and Sears. Other known stores in the mall include The Gap, Banana Republic, American Eagle Outfitters and The Body Shop.

For a more unique shopping experience, head to the Kitchener Market. The market is held every Wednesday and Saturday morning and a number of artisans sell their products here.

Parks to Visit in the KWC Region

It is finally summer, and the kids are out of school! We want to help you (and your kids) avoid summer boredom by building excitement to spend time outdoors! Planning an activity with your family doesn’t have to be expensive or stressful if you decide to spend the day at one of the KWC Region’s parks. Whether on a hike, cycling, climbing, running, rollerblading, or simply surrounding yourself in nature, there is something for everyone to enjoy. We’ve put together a list of parks in the KWC Region to adventure in this summer, along with a variety of amenities you can take advantage of!

Continue reading to discover the Region’s most beautiful parks and get your dose of nature’s fresh air and green scenery.

Waterloo Park

Often called “the jewel of the city,” Waterloo Park is the heart of Waterloo. Spend a summer afternoon exploring 111 acres of surrounding green space. Bring a blanket and read, or share a picnic with the warm sun shining down on you. If that doesn’t excite you, the Park’s open green space also has two soccer/rugby pitches, two baseball diamonds, and a cricket pitch to run around and play a sports game with friends and family. The Park is also home to a skatepark, a splash pad, and picnic areas to take your kids and watch them learn new skills. There is free parking from the Westmount Road North entrance to the Park. Alternatively, you can use the bike-friendly lanes and feel safe with their bike traffic lights as you move on to explore Uptown Waterloo. For more information on cycling in the City of Waterloo, click here .

Fun fact: Waterloo Park has a zoo located in the centre of the Park! Visit the farm animals up close at Eby’s Farmstead – peacocks, donkeys, goats, and llamas – oh my!

Bechtel Park

Summer is the best time of the year to appreciate the outdoors! Lather your sunscreen, grab your summer shades, and visit Bechtel Park in Waterloo. Take a walk and explore the wildlife through twists and turns that lead down to a tranquil stream along a trail – where you’re sure to hear singsong of birds chirping. You cannot help but feel energized by all of the Park’s amenities: an indoor field house, the Manulife Soccer and Sports Centre, three outdoor soccer fields, four hard-surface tennis/pickleball courts, a hardball stadium with lights, a batting cage, and a playground! If you are interested in renting out any of these amenities listed for some awesome summer fun, click here .

Fun fact: Bechtel Park has one of the most ‘pawpular’ dog parks in Waterloo! Let your dog run freely in their fully fenced area.

RIM Park is the City of Waterloo’s leading recreation and park complex. Its main building is The Manulife Financial Sportsplex and Healthy Living Centre, which offers a wide variety of indoor activities. Plus, the Park is on 500 acres with an abundance of green spaces to take the family outdoors and escape into nature! RIM Park’s outdoor facilities include 12 outdoor multi-purpose sports fields, 6 ball diamonds, and sand beach volleyball courts to plan your dream summer day! If sports aren’t your thing, hang around the Parks’ playgrounds and have your kids climb the monkey bars or play tag until the sun goes down. Another great place to venture off to is the Walter Bean Trail which runs through the park, where you can hike, bike, or rollerblade along the Grand River. On the trail, you will have views of the beautiful Grey Silo Golf Course where you can schedule a tee time with your family! To learn more about RIM Park, click here.

Fun fact: RIM Park is just a 10-minute walk from our Trailside townhomes in Waterloo – allowing neighbours to take advantage of all the Park’s wonders inside and outside!

Sundew Park

Sundew Park is located in the lovely Activa community of Vista Hills. Visit with your little ones and enjoy a beautiful summer day outdoors. Surround yourself with mature trees while exploring the Park’s playground and appreciate the wonders of a fresh summer breeze. You can see and smell beautiful flowers and plants of all shapes and colours from the pollinator gardens in Sundew Park. It is a unique garden that homeowners living in the Vista Hills community help to maintain with donations from the Grand River Conversation Authority, which granted over 100 native plants for the volunteers to plant. It is truly inspiring to see this community put their heart and soul into this garden together, as they care for it all season long! If you want to learn more about the community garden in Vista Hills, click here .

Fun fact: Sundew Park is walking distance to the GeoTime Trail – the largest woodland in Waterloo!

Victoria Park

When visiting Victoria Park, you can’t miss some of the Park’s beautiful treasures and landmarks. As you walk through, you’ll spot numerous bridges and buildings still standing since it opened in 1896, making it Kitchener’s oldest Park. Bring your kids for the day and go back in time where you will find some of Kitchener’s original features that remain, including an iron bridge and its Park’s historic Pavilion. It will feel magical as you appreciate the Park’s tallest trees and most beautiful gardens. You can also take a walk, bike, or rollerblade along the Iron Horse Trail that runs through Victoria Park and enjoy nature’s serenity. If you’re looking for a way to stay cool this summer, take advantage of the Park’s free splash pad and then afterwards dry off on the Park’s large playground!

Fun Fact: Victoria Park is home to Otis and Ophelia, the swans that live in the Park during the summer!

Riverside Park Cambridge

You will not run out of things to do when visiting Riverside Park in Cambridge. Spanning 102 hectares, you can bring your kids to run around the many playground structures or cool off at a splash park. Fort William Historical Park, Thunder Bay

Visiting Fort William Historical Park in Thunder Bay is like stepping back in time and being suddenly immersed in the hustle and bustle of the Canadian fur trade, 200 years ago. Located at what came to be known as the Lakehead, Fort William was once a meeting place for colourful voyageurs and Indigenous trappers. Today, this family-friendly attraction features in-character interpreters and facilities—including a great hall, canoe-building shop, and doctor’s office—that recreate the historic fur trade post that was once at the centre of the Canadian economy.

Norm’s Cabin, Goulais River

Looking to get away from it all? You won’t find a retreat more idyllic than Norm’s Cabin , tucked away in the Precambrian hills of the Algoma Highlands, north of Sault Ste. Marie. This trail-access, off-grid retreat is located on quiet Bone Lake, with immediate access to a huge network of mountain biking and hiking trails. Norm’s is popular for couples, families and getaways with close friends. Contact Blaq Bear Tours to plan your stay.

Bushplane Museum and Entomica, Sault Ste. Marie

The Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre in downtown Sault Ste. Marie attracts flight enthusiasts from all around the world for its huge collection of historic aircraft, with a special focus on the history of aviation in the Canadian wilderness. There’s something for everyone at the Bushplane Museum, including family-friendly interactive displays that put you in the pilot’s seat. What’s more, the former hangar is also home to Entomica , an award-winning insectarium that gives you the opportunity to encounter (and touch!) many types of colourful and sometimes creepy bugs. The Northern Superior Tap Room , located next door, offers local beers and pub fare with a large outdoor patio near the St. Marys River waterfront.

Kivi Park, Sudbury

Sudbury is recognized as an outdoor hub because of attractions like Kivi Park , an all-season destination for mountain biking, hiking, paddling, and cross-country skiing, located minutes from the city centre on Long Lake. This 480-acre green space takes advantage of rugged Canadian Shield and boreal forest terrain, offering something for everyone including on-site bike, SUP, kayak, and canoe rentals.

Canadian Ecology Centre, Mattawa

The Canadian Ecology Centre specializes in year-round outdoor education. Combined with 32 rental cabins, it makes for a fantastic destination for a learning vacation for curious and adventurous families. Book a cabin in the woods and explore the on-site trails; facilities are located next door to Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park , where you can enjoy the Mattawa River waterfront or rent a canoe to paddle this Canadian Heritage waterway.

whitewater at Recollet Falls Trail

Recollet Falls Trail, French River

The French River has always been a waterway for travellers, and today it marks the beginning of Northern Ontario. This waterway, bisected by Highway 69 between Parry Sound and Sudbury, has a rich history as an indigenous canoe route and a key link in the “voyageurs’ highway” of the Canadian fur trade. The French River Visitor Centre is a great spot to stop and gain a greater appreciation of the area’s history. Better yet, take 90 minutes and stretch your legs on the easy 4-km hiking trail to Recollet Falls.

Wawa Beaches

Few Ontario towns can match the adventure potential of Wawa , a small community just northeast of Lake Superior. Wawa has two family-friendly beaches right next to downtown on Wawa Lake. Meanwhile, Sandy Beach , located 10 minutes out of town on Michipicoten Bay, is certainly one of Ontario’s finest for its amazing Lake Superior vista. Walk a kilometre of shifting sand and enjoy Lake Superior’s changing moods; some days the water is warm and swimmable, other times it’s angry and rough. A gourmet dinner at Kinniwabi Pines Restaurant is a great way to wrap up a sunny day at the beach.

Nipigon Recreational Trail

One of the finest day hikes north of Lake Superior stretches 10-km between the communities of Nipigon and Red Rock, about an hour’s drive east of Thunder Bay. The Nipigon River Recreational Trail provides a great introduction to the rugged boreal forest landscape of northwestern Ontario, with steep climbs in dense, rocky woods. You’ll also enjoy outstanding views of the islands and open waters of the Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area . A flat, easy section traces the shores of the Nipigon River, providing great opportunities to view shorebirds and waterfowl, as well as boreal songbirds. Finish your hike at Ducky’s Diner , which offers home-cooked meals and a fun and friendly dining experience in Nipigon.

View of Ouimet Canyon

Ouimet Canyon

Northwestern Ontario’s “Grand Canyon” is a stunning sight that’s a true hidden gem. The Ouimet Canyon is a 100-meter-deep rift in the Canadian Shield, with its own unique community of arctic vegetation (remnants of the Ice Age). What’s more, this is a family-friendly destination, featuring a one-kilometre loop trail to the rim of the 150-metre-wide canyon and great opportunities for birdwatchers, especially during the migration periods of spring and fall. Reach the day-use park from Highway 17, just east of Thunder Bay.

Carden Cove, Marathon

This secluded beach on Lake Superior in Marathon, midway between Sault Ste. Marie and Thunder Bay and a short drive off of Highway 17, features great views of some of the prettiest coastline on the Great Lakes. Carden Cove also serves an access point along the Lake Superior Water Trail segment of the Trans Canada Trail with a sheltered launch for sea kayakers. You’ll also find short hiking trails in the area radiating out to other pristine beaches.

Boom Camp Trails, Blind River

Blind River’s Boom Camp is a great natural space in Blind River with wetlands, rocky ridges, and tall pines, overlaid by a tapestry of easy trails for hiking (and groomed for cross-country skiing in the winter). Discover Blind River ’s rich logging history as you walk an interpretive trail to the mouth of the Mississagi River, featuring an impressive sand beach and excellent swimming on Lake Huron. The trailhead is accessed from Highway 17, just west of the town centre.

Casque Isles Trail and Slate Islands, Terrace Bay

Terrace Bay is home to a brand-new visitor centre for the Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area . The town’s marina at the mouth of the Aguasabon River is set on an immense sand beach that serves as the eastern terminus of the Casque Isles hiking trail . This 50-km trail has options for long-distance backpackers and day hikers alike. From the marina you can take an easy stroll to view the cascades of the Aguasabon gorge. Terrace Bay is perched on a steep shoreline with long views to the Slate Islands —a remote provincial park and popular destination for advanced sea kayakers—about 10 km offshore. Novice paddlers can experience the Slates on a guided trip with SAND Adventures or Naturally Superior Adventures .

Manitoulin Eco-Park, Manitoulin Island

Manitoulin Island is a unique vacation destination easily accessible by ferry from Tobermory. The island is especially popular among cyclists who come to ride the quiet back roads. Families will enjoy a stay at Manitoulin Eco Park , which provides campsites for tents and trailers, as well as bunkie and tipi rentals. The park is part of a Dark Sky Preserve with some of the finest stargazing in the province and offers a great base camp for visiting Manitoulin’s other attractions .

Canvas tents in the woods

WildExodus Glamping, Timmins

Timmins is a decidedly vibrant Northern Ontario community with plenty of attractions. You can get a sense of the city’s rugged wilderness surroundings with WildExodus . This local outfitter offers a wide range of services, including glamping and yurt accommodations (with gourmet dining) on the shores of Kenogamissi Lake, as well as paddling, hiking, and fishing tours in the boreal forest.

Fort St. Joseph

There are plenty of reasons to visit St. Joseph Island, located on Lake Huron’s North Channel, about an hour’s drive east of Sault Ste. Marie. Fort St. Joseph National Historic Site is a lesser-known destination with walking trails, excellent birding (with the opportunity to see more than 200 species ), historical reenactments of the War of 1812 and sweeping views of Lake Huron. Maria’s Cabins offers waterfront vacation rentals.

Lake of the Woods Houseboating

There’s no better way to explore the numberless islands and inlets of Lake of the Woods than on a multi-day houseboat vacation with family and friends. Houseboats are popular among anglers and provide paddlers with the opportunity to bring along SUPs or kayaks for closer encounters with boreal forest shores. You’ll find plenty of options for houseboat rentals in Kenora , a vibrant waterfront community in Northwestern Ontario’s Sunset Country. Book your trip with Houseboat Adventures or Lake Life Houseboats .

Polar bear walks across a field beside some water

Cochrane Polar Bear Museum

It’s fitting that one of Ontario’s northernmost road-accessible communities features a distinctly arctic attraction. Located near Highway 11, several hours north of North Bay, Cochrane’s Polar Bear Habitat includes three resident (rescued) polar bears and exhibits to learn more about their biology and role in the Far North ecosystems of James and Hudson Bays. The historic Ontario Northland Station Inn makes a great place to spend a night.

Deer Trail, Elliot Lake

The Deer Trail Touring Route is a scenic 120-km drive on paved secondary highways 546, 639 and 108, between Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie. This stunning route boasts the same great scenery and hills of more popular drives like Algonquin Park’s Highway 60, but with a fraction of the visitors. Elliot Lake is the main community en route and you’ll find quiet camping, hiking and paddling at Mississagi Provincial Park . For upscale accommodations check out Laurentian Lodge , a great base camp for couples, outdoor photographers and adventurous families on Flack Lake.

Visit These Seldom-Seen Ontario Gems

As you can see, there’s infinitely more to Ontario than Algonquin Park, Toronto, the National Capital, and Niagara Falls. This list of Ontario’s hidden gems is only the beginning. Pack your bags and hit the road to discover all of the province’s secret destinations for outdoor experiences.

Next, take the ferry from Leamington (make sure you book your ticket for the ferry well in advance!) to Pelee Island. The ferry ride is about 90 minutes, depending on weather conditions. Make sure you bring a book. We are big fans of The Wandering Dog Inn on Pelee Island, and there are plenty of great places to check out once you’re there.

Carve out some time to rent a bike, explore the island, go swimming, head to some restaurants, and enjoy living the island life. A Point Pelee winter getaway is another great way to experience this incredible park.

Maybe you’d like to book a stay on the waterfront at the Westin Harbour Castle and check out the surrounding areas. Or, perhaps you’d like to stay in the eastern neighbourhoods of the city and book yourself into the Broadview Hotel in Leslieville .

Or maybe you plan to stay more centrally, like booking a stay at The Chelsea Hotel . And if you head to the west, you might be happier booking a few nights at The Drake .

This is a bit of a stretch, since not all of these towns connect to the Grand River, but take your pick between a charming weekend in either Stratford, Elora, or Paris.

Both Elora and Paris, while distanced, are situated on different spots along the Grand River. Both are scenic and charming. Stratford is a little further west along Lake Victoria.

This weekend getaway combines the historic charm of Niagara-on-the-Lake with family fun and excitement in Niagara Falls. Depending on the type of weekend getaways in Ontario you’re looking for, you can easily pick one or the other, or do a combination of both.

Hire a Houseboat to Cruise the Rideau Canal

This is a very neat experience that would lend itself well to a weekend getaway. If you weren’t aware that you could rent a houseboat in Ontario, then you should definitely check out Le Boat Vacations. Le Boat offers experiences all over the world, but their boat trips along the Rideau Canal between Ottawa and Kingston are not to be missed.

You are essentially given a boat, instructed on how to use it, and you’re off! You’ll need to bring your own food and supplies, so it’s kind of like an elevated camping experience on the water. Plus, you’ll take in the sights of the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Rideau Canal the way it was intended: from the water.

Unique Places in Ontario

unique places to visit in ontario | map

There are so many places to visit in Ontario, it’s difficult to know where to begin. So we thought we’d start of this epic list with the more unique experiences and ideas. But don’t worry, as you go along, there are places in and close to Toronto and other urban centres. No matter where you are in Ontario , I am sure there is a place to visit near you!

1. The Grotto

One of the best places to visit in ontario is the Tobermory Grotto

One of the best places to visit is Tobermory, Grotto. We have always known about how special Tobermory was. Its shipwrecks have attracted us to its icy waters since 2000 when we started scuba diving. But we never really looked into its draw to photographers until it caught the eye of Instagrammers.

We used to have this beautiful coast on the Bruce Peninsula all to ourselves. Today, you need to make a reservation to see the turquoise waters shimmering in a cave. Read more: The Best Things to do in Tobermory, Ontario

This day trip from Toronto takes you with a guide and driver to Georgian Bay to see the lighthouse at Big Tub Harbor, a hike along Horse Lake and the Cliffs of Georgian Bay including hiking to Indian Head Cove, the Grotto, and Marr Lake.

2. Flowerpot Island

Places to visit in Ontario like Flowerpot Island

While you are in the neighbourhood, Flowerpot Island is another iconic place in Ontario. Located in the Fathom Five National Marine Park of Tobermory, a place we frequented while diving at the turn of the century (that sounds so weird to say, but it was 20 years ago!) The pillars and caves of Flowerpot Island attract hikers, daytrippers and boat tours to see the interesting formations. Read more: 25 Best Places to Camp in Ontario, Canada

3. Wiarton Willy

Wiarton Willie is a great place to visit in Ontario

Located in the waterfront town of Wiarton, Wiarton Willy is Canada’s answer to Punxsutawney Phil. Each February crowds gather around this groundhog’s home as he predicts whether it will be an early or late spring depending if he sees his shadow or not. Willy has the rest of the year off, and visitors can pop by his dwelling to say hello! Read more at the Grey Bruce Superloop

4. White River

White river in Ontario

Blink and you’ll miss it, but White River is famous for Winnie the Pooh. Even though it is small, White River is one of the most iconic places to visit in Canada for a historical reference. Way back in 1914, a hunter shot a bear cub’s mother and brought the cub back to town to keep as a pet.

A soldier going through White River by train bought the bear cub for $20 and brought it to Europe with him. When his regiment was shipped off to France to fight, the soldier gave the bear to a zoo in England and that is where the bear lived out its life. Writer A.A. Milne frequented the zoo and his son Christopher Robin liked the bear giving it the nickname Pooh. “Thus Winnie the Pooh was born in White River.”

5. Diefenbunker

diefenbunker ottawa ontario cool things to see

The Diefenbunker is definitely one of the quirkiest museum in Ontario. This underground museum was built during the Cold War for Canada’s top dogs to take cover in case of a nuclear attack.

Located strategically outside of Ottawa, it was meant to withstand a nuclear bomb. It’s like stepping back into a time capsule as you tour old computer rooms, creepy living quarters and even medical rooms.

Touring the Deifenbunker makes you realize that you wouldn’t want to be the one called upon to live in here after an attack. I’d take my chances outside.

6. Cheltenham Badlands

Visit the Cheltenham Badlands in Ontario

Dave and I stumbled upon this weird phenomenon while cycling outside Toronto in Caledon years ago. Nobody was around and we never knew it existed before then.

Today, it’s popular for photographers. It is a piece of land that looks like the Badlands of Alberta or South Dakota . Terrible environmental practices were the result of exposing this red piece of shale creating a lunar-like landscape.

7. The Big Nickel in Sudbury

The Big nickel in Sudbury is a must visit in ontario

Canada loves roadside attractions. There’s the Big Apple in Colborne as you drive east on the 401 towards Montreal or Ottawa, there’s the Big Paddle in BC, and the Canada Goose of Wawa.

But my favourite is the Big Nickel in Sudbury. Located at the Dynamic Earth Science Museum (which is a lot of fun) the Big Nickel was built in 1964 to pay homage to the mining industry of the area.

Popular Attractions in Ontario

Another interesting landmark to visit is Casa Loma in Toronto. Casa Loma is Ontario’s castle complete with hidden passageways, stables and a beautiful garden. Sir Henry Pallett began construction in 1911. But thanks to The Great Depression, World War I and financial difficulties he lost the castle in 1923.

It has been used as everything from a hotel to a nightclub and was even abandoned for a while. Today you can tour the castle, enjoy fine dining and high tea and there are several regular events happening. Get your Casa Loma entry ticket here .

14. Canada’s Wonderland

canada's wonderland day trips

I am definitely partial to Canada’s Wonderland since I worked as a singer there for four seasons. This is Canada’s largest amusement park and one of the best places in the world to enjoy roller coasters. Located just 40 minutes outside of Toronto, you can spend the day riding thrilling rides, enjoying the waterpark, watching shows or taking the kids through Kidzville.

Ontario North – Places to Visit

places to visit on lake superior ontario canada

Lake Superior is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful places in Ontario. For most, it is also one of Ontario’s more unexplored places because it is so far north. Getting there is a bit of a drive, but once you are up on the North Shore of this magnificent Great Lake you’ll have the adventure of a lifetime!

15. Agawa Rocks Petroglyphs

Agawa Pertoglyphs in Ontario on Lake Superior

The drive along the TransCanada Highway between Sault Ste Marie and Thunder Bay is certainly the most beautiful drive in Ontario. It’s time to visit a cool northern town, Sault Ste Marie. Known as “The Soo,” Sault Ste Marie is home to the Canadian BiPlane Heritage Museum and one of the best places in the world for fly fishing, according to Ernest Hemingway himself, the Saint Mary’s River.

We went fly fishing here, and it was awesome. Fly fishers worldwide put on their waders and spend hours catching and releasing bass and steelhead.

Agawa Canyon Train Tour

While in Sault Ste. Marie, you can take a train tour to see the deep and remote Agawa Canyon.

The Wawa Goose in Ontario

The name alone makes Wawa worth visiting. But this little town on the north shore of Lake Superior packs a punch. First you must stop to say hello to the Wawa Goose. The Wawa Goose was built in the 1930s to attract visitors bypassing Wawa on the drive along the TransCanada Highway. This massive Goose is one of the most photographed landmarks in North America. (according to the Algoma County Tourism Board anyway. ) Read more: Lake Superior Circle Tour – Ultimate Two Week Itinerary

It is then a 5-7 day long hike back along the gorgeous Canadian Shield shoreline and through breathtaking boreal forests.

20. Terry Fox Memorial

Terry Fox is a national hero of Canada. In 1980, he started a journey running across Canada after losing a leg to cancer. Sadly his cancer came back during his run and he had to stop partway through in the town of Thunder Bay located on the Trans Canada highway.

He was 143 days and 5,373 kilometers (3,339 miles) into his run, and a memorial was erected in his honor at the location he had to cut his journey short. 17. Day trip to Paris, Ontario

If you don’t have time for the full “European” tour but are still up for a day trip to one of these great Ontario small towns, then we highly recommend a romantic outing to Paris, Ontario.

This charming town is known for its picturesque waterfront patios, glowing Penman’s dam (it’s lit up at night), unique boutique shopping, and perfect paddling opportunities on the Grand River.

West Montrose Covered Bridge Creative Commons

West Montrose Covered Bridge , is a unique and unsuspecting choice for a romantic outing, but hear us out on this one. As Ontario’s last covered bridge, this Provincial Historic Site attracts visitors from around the world wanting to catch a glimpse – or a kiss – on this century old structure!

The bridge spans almost 200 feet across the Grand River, and history has it that couples riding in horse and buggies would take the opportunity to kiss while being hidden by the covered bridge.

The West Montrose Covered Bridge is also picture perfect and totally insta-worthy.

20. Visit a Museum

Couple in a museum

If you’re a history buff you will totally get that walking hand-in-hand through time at one of the Region of Waterloo Museums is one of the most romantic things to do.

There are many popular sites to choose from (both indoor and partially outdoor), including the Ken Seiling Waterloo Regional Museum, Doon Heritage Village, Schneider Haus National Historic Site and the McDougall Cottage Historic Site.

Outdoor Date Ideas

When we spend most of our days indoors, having a few handy outdoor date ideas can be super helpful. In any season, southwestern Ontario has a ton of amazing activities to offer couples who want to engage that sense of adventure and find something new and exciting to do outside.

These outdoor date ideas are some of our top recommendations for romantic things to do in Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge.

21. Picnic in the Park

Picnic in park

When all else fails, a good old picnic in the park is always a good choice for an outdoor date. Instead of being distracted by a movie, live show or busy city sites around you, you and your partner have each other’s undivided attention.

If you’re not sure where to head, consider starting with Victoria Park in Kitchener, Riverside Park in Cambridge, or any one of the fantastic nature trails and conservation areas across the Tri Cities.

Pick up some fresh bread, deli meats and cheeses, a bottle of non-alcoholic (you’re in public!) bubbly at the grocery store and you’ve got yourself a beautiful picnic out.

Want to head a bit further off the beaten path? Consider renting bicycles or bringing your own and making it a full day out.

22. Outdoor Walking Tour

For a twist on your usual neighbourhood stroll, consider setting out on a free Outdoor Walking Tour . Download your PDF guides to different areas of Kitchener for a self-guided walking tour of the city’s historical areas, downtown core, Mount Hope Cemetery, and even a Public Art Tour.

If you prefer a more organized and structured walking tour, consider booking a Stroll Walking Tour through Waterloo and experience the city’s history come to life.

23. Elora Quarry

It may not be a trip to a tropical beach, but spending the day sunbathing and swimming at the Elora Quarry Conservation Area will be just as fun! Beach vibes are totally alive here in this gorgeous swim hole lined with sheer 40 foot high cliffs and surrounding forest.

The Elora Quarry is your closest “beach” to Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge and attracts a busy crowd during its open season (June-Labour Day). This is an outdoor date idea that’s sure to delight your sweetie and leave you both in a balmy summer mood!

24. Elora Gorge

Not to be confused with the Elora Quarry, the Elora Gorge Conservation Area is your ultimate scenic destination within a short drive from the Kitchener-Waterloo and Cambridge region.

The Elora Gorge is really the Grand River at its finest, where steep limestone cliffs have made way for the gushing river below.

Consider booking the favourite activity of water tubing down the Grand River for a super memorable visit to the Gorge, or stick to the spectacular trails for a low-key date out. The Conservation Area is open from May to October and definitely gets busy (so book ahead).

The Grand River Rafting Company has an excellent reputation and offers tours out of nearby Brantford and Paris.

28. December at the Christkindl Market

Take your date out for one of the best things to do in Kitchener and Waterloo during Christmas by heading to the Christkindl Market !

Shop local artisans and specialty items, taste fresh German cuisine, take a seasonal walking tour, watch live performances, and find your romance under the glowing lights of the nighttime market. You will definitely feel that love is in the air with this winter date idea.

29. Outdoor Ice Rinks

Outdoor Ice Skating

Strap on your skates and take your love hand in hand for a romantic skate on one of the Tri Cities’ public outdoor ice rinks.

Head to Victoria Park in Kitchener, the Waterloo Public Square, or any of the outdoor public ice rinks in Waterloo , outdoor public ice rinks in Kitchener , or outdoor public ice rinks in Cambridge , for a delightful date in the crisp winter air.

Finish your night off with some hot cocoa or warm apple cider at a local café and you’ve got yourself a winning winter date night in our books.

30. Cross-Country Skiing or Snowshoeing

We’ve paired these two winter sports together because both sports often use the same trails and involve a similar level of physical activity.

Cross-country (or Nordic) skiing and snowshoeing can be done in a few designated places in Kitchener-Waterloo and Cambridge (though you could easily forge your own paths in any park or trail.

Popular spots for both sports include Laurel Creek Conservation Area in Waterloo and Shade’s Mills Conservation Area in Cambridge.

Check out the Grand River Conservation Authority’s website for additional locations outside of the Tri Cities as well as for updates on trail conditions!

31. Tobogganing

If you want to show your date that you can let loose and have some good old, down-to-earth fun, then dig out that old sled and hit the hills for an afternoon of tobogganing!
