'Gordon Ramsay's American Road Trip' on Fox — everything you need to know

Gordon, Gino and Fred are back on the road again — and this time they're discovering North America

Gordon Ramsay's American Road Trip

Following the huge success of his European adventures, Gordon Ramsay is back, and this time his mammoth new RV "Betty the Beast" will be hitting the highways to travel from Mexico to Texas for his most outrageous road trip yet.

It's Gordon Ramsay's American Road Trip — and this is everything you need to know about the foodie show.

How to watch Gordon Ramsay's American Road Trip

Gordon Ramsay's American Road Trip is available in the U.S. on Fox, at 8 p.m. Eastern time starting Tuesday, Jan. 5.

After that you'll be able to watch it on Fox on demand.

The one-night special will see the tight-knit trio taking in the sights and culinary delights of Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Texas and Tijuana.

Fox is available on most every major streaming service in the United States. (With the exception of Sling TV, which only has Fox in select markets.)

Our recommendation is to check out FuboTV . In addition to local Fox networks, FuboTV has a competitive list of channels, as well as premium add-ons. And it's even better if you're a sports fan, with options for international events that you can't find anywhere else.

Get the What to Watch Newsletter

The latest updates, reviews and unmissable series to watch and more!

FuboTV starts at $59.99 a month the most basic package of 95 channels, and you can build things up from there.

How to watch Gordon Ramsay's American Road Trip from anywhere in the world

If you're not in your usual Fox viewing market and still want to watch Gordon Ramsay's American Road Trip, a VPN might be just the thing that keeps the food juices flowing.

A VPN allows your network traffic to flow through a specific set of servers in a specific country. So if you want to watch Fox in the U.S., you can watch Fox in the U.S.

The only catch is you need to be able to trust your VPN provider, because all of your network traffic — encrypted and unencrypted alike — will be flowing through it. For that, we've long been fans of ExpressVPN .

ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN is one of the easiest and affordable ways to watch what you want from anywhere you want to watch it. Plus it'll help keep your network traffic away from any prying eyes on public networks.

And it's a great way to watch all the Gordon Ramsay you want —  from anywhere in the world.

Who stars in Gordon Ramsay's American Road Trip?

No-nonsense Gordon is joined by fellow celebrity chefs Gino D’Acampo and Fred Sirieix, both of whom are familiar faces on British TV.

Gino is a renowned (and hilarious) Italian celebrity chef, who rose to fame as a regular chef on daytime TV show This Morning in the UK and is also a panelist on Keith Lemon's show Celebrity Juice .

As well as cooking up a storm on TV, Gino also has a hugely successful line of cookbooks in the UK.

Fred is a famous French Maitre d'hotel and has appeared on shows like Channel 4's First Dates and BBC Two's Million Pound Menu.

What happens in Gordon Ramsay's American Road Trip?

Along the way the trio’s antics will include wallet-busting burgers, dune buggy racing, goat yoga, spear fishing, cowboy capers and wild wrestling — not to mention an array of interesting ingredients, including tequila in a salad!

What could possibly go wrong?

As always there is plenty of hilarious banter, bickering and ego-bashing thrown in for good measure.

With Gino and Fred both loyal to their European roots, will Gordon be able to convince the culinary experts that food in the US lives up to its reputation for being bigger and better than anywhere else in the world?

While the trio might try to outdo one another as they sample the local delicacies and fight to be crowned the next king of the kitchen, they all have one thing in common — a shared passion for good food.

National Geographic’s Cooking Expedition Series ‘Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted’ Serves Up the Season Three Premiere this Memorial Day at 9/8c, Available Next Day on Disney+

Gordon ramsay is back for another all-action global culinary adventure, tasting and traversing his way through portugal, croatia, mexico, texas, puerto rico, iceland and more.

Gordon Ramsay is back, foraging for food and facing treacherous conditions around the globe in pursuit of culinary excellence in the third season of GORDON RAMSAY: UNCHARTED . National Geographic’s cooking expedition series will premiere this Memorial Day, on Monday, May 31, at 9/8c, and will also air globally in 172 countries and 43 languages. After its Memorial Day premiere, the series will air weekly on Sundays at 9/8c, beginning on Sunday, June 6. The multi-Michelin-star chef and Ironman athlete buckles up this season as he serves up another thrilling adventure, exploring world cultures through food.

“During these unprecedented times, UNCHARTED provides an exciting escape to explore the world safely from home, and inspiration to try new flavors and cooking techniques from the food experts I meet along my journey,” said Gordon Ramsay. “The world is a massive place, full of diversity and history, and we’re just starting to dig into the boldest flavors the planet has to offer.”

This upcoming season, Ramsay hits the road again and feasts his way through Portugal, Croatia, Mexico, Texas, Maine, Puerto Rico, Iceland and the Smoky Mountains, going off the grid and off the recipe to explore global cuisines and unique culinary customs. He’ll herd cattle on horseback with the help of a helicopter and hunt for venomous rattlesnake in the backcountry of Texas. He’ll brave giant pounding waves for fresh barnacles that cling to the rocky Portuguese coastline and struggle to keep up with a team of lobster fisherwomen off the coast of Maine’s choppy waters. He’ll fight for oxygen while freediving for local mollusks in Croatia and rappel down a treacherous waterfall and kayak through raging rapids deep in the Smoky Mountains.

Under the guidance of local experts and food legends he meets along the way, Ramsay will partake in culinary customs and learn about delicious delicacies and fresh flavors unique to each region. Every ingredient he harvests, dish he tastes and person he meets will inspire him to create a recipe from scratch intended to represent the heart of that culture. Each episode concludes with Ramsay challenging himself during a final big cookout with a local food legend by his side, as they prepare a meal together for the locals he met during his journey.

EPISODES INCLUDE:

Monday, May 31, at 9/8c

Gordon Ramsay journeys to the wilds of south central Texas and meets some tough, gritty characters to learn what it means to be from the Lone Star State. He will herd cattle with the help of a helicopter, hunt for venomous rattlesnake in the backcountry and go on a night hunt for invasive and ferocious feral hogs. He’ll need to dig deep and toughen up if he wants to show the acclaimed James Beard Award-winning chef Justin Yu and a group of locals that he has what it takes to cook his way through their state.

Sunday, June 6, at 9/8c

Gordon Ramsay explores the rugged landscape of Portugal, where the simple way of life is evident in the country’s incredible cuisine. Gordon will chase black pigs across a farm to feed them, brave giant pounding waves for barnacles that cling to the rocky coastline and the open seas to fish for iconic sardines. He’ll need to roll up his sleeves and bring his A-game in order to beat local chef, Kiko Martins, in an epic feast for the Mayor of Nazaré.

Sunday, June 13, at 9/8c

Gordon Ramsay discovers why Maine, United States, is called the “lobster capital of the world.” Along the rugged coastline, he struggles to keep up with a team of lobster fisherwomen, dives for clams, harvests oysters, forages in freezing waters and tests his lumberjack skills. Can he earn the status of a tough Mainer as he tests his culinary skills against local legend chef Melissa Kelly, a two-time James Beard award-winner?

Sunday, June 20, at 9/8c

Gordon Ramsay travels to the untouched peninsula of Istria, Croatia, for ingredients that rival the best of Italy in world-class quality. He fights for oxygen freediving for local mollusks, risks his pride fishing for rare cuttlefish and chases after goats for cheese and donkeys for milk. He learns the secrets to finding exquisite truffles and making exceptional olive oil before testing his newly found skills against local chef David Skoko.

PUERTO RICO

Sunday, June 27, at 9/8c

Gordon Ramsay explores the enchanted island of Puerto Rico, from the bright blue sea to the lush mountains of the interior. Along the way, he learns about Hurricane Maria’s recent devastating toll on the island and how food shortages have prompted locals to push for food independence. On this epic adventure, Gordon goes spearfishing, takes a helicopter ride to an organic coffee plantation, and rappels down a waterfall for delicious river shrimp. Throughout his journey, he is hosted by laid back surfer-chef José Enrique, who turns up the gas at the final cook.

Sunday, July 4, at 9/8c

Gordon Ramsay heads to the land of fire and ice during the Icelandic summer to learn secret cooking techniques utilizing the volcanic landscape. He fishes in a glacial river for wild salmon and cooks bread in geothermally heated soil before heading north to the sparsely populated Westfjords. After sampling fermented shark and diving for scallops in the freezing fjords, he joins Iceland’s first Michelin-rated chef, Ragnar Eiríksson, for a feast in a rainstorm.

SMOKY MOUNTAINS

Sunday, July 11, at 9/8c

Gordon Ramsay is pushed to his limits in the Smoky Mountains. In his quest to unearth the region’s culinary secrets, Gordon must rappel down a treacherous waterfall, kayak through raging rapids, and trek deep into the forest, attempting to find the most delicious ingredients in this magnificent mountain range. His culinary rival at the big cook is chef William Dissen, named one of America’s “Most Sustainable Chefs,” who knows these mountains, rivers and forests like the back of his hand.

Sunday, July 18, at 9/8c

Gordon Ramsay discovers the culinary secrets of the country’s legendary Oaxaca region, where mole reigns supreme. In addition to learning to make the storied chocolate- and chili-infused sauce, Gordon must rappel down a cliff in search of delicious butter worms, harvest the honey sacs from burrowing ants and fend off angry wasps in search of their coveted larva. In his effort to measure up to acclaimed Mexico City chef Gabriela Cámara, he will also engage in the punishing physical process of harvesting agave plants to make mescal.

Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted And 10 Other Travel Shows To Stream While Staying Home For The Holidays

Gordon Ramsay on Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted

In any normal year, we would all be traveling to either see our families or going off on some grand adventure to escape them during the holiday season. But with everything going on in the world, many of us are either going on shorter day trips with our immediate families or staying home entirely as we try to stay safe and well this holiday season. This doesn't mean we can't explore the world, however, as there are countless travel shows like Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted , Ewan McGregor 's Long Way Up , and cherished classics from the likes of Rick Steves and Samantha Brown to help us get over the travel bug.

So, as we sit around our houses looking for something to take our minds off the claustrophobia that is making us all a little crazy, there's never been a better time to turn to any number of those great travel shows to put a little adventure back into our lives. Grab your trusty pair of walking shoes, that backpack you bought for a European vacation in college, and a map because we're going on a journey into the world of travel shows.

Gordon Ramsay on Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted

Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted (Disney+)

To many, Gordon Ramsay will always be the irate British chef breaking down hapless restaurant and bar owners on Kitchen Nightmares , but the volatile and foul-mouthed television icon's latest show, Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted is something entirely different. In each of the National Geographic Channel show's two seasons (both are available on Disney+), Ramsay travels to a different section of the world where he explores the landscape, the people, their culture, and unsurprisingly, their food. As you watch Ramsay find himself playing the role of the student opposed to the teacher, you will see him in places like Peru, Alaska, Tasmania, and India as he treks the globe learning about the secrets of the world.

Stream it on Disney+ .

Darin Olien and Zac Efron on Down To Earth with Zac Efron

Down To Earth With Zac Efron (Netflix)

When the name Zac Efron comes up, you might think back to his days in the High School Musical movies or other film projects over the years that have showcased his ridiculous physique, but his Netflix travel series (which debuted it's first season in 2020) Down to Earth With Zac Efron is surprisingly one of the most genuine and sincere shows you'll watch this year. In each of the show's eight episodes, Efron and wellness expert Darin Olien (who is often the highlight) go to places like Iceland, Puerto Rico, Sardinia, and even Iquitos in the Amazon rain forest, where they learn about the culture as well as the healthy and sustainable habits of the local people.

Stream it on Netflix .

Sean Brock and Anthony Bourdain on Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown

Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown (HBO Max)

It has been two years since the death of legendary chef and world traveler Anthony Bourdain , but the food and culture icon's impact still lives on in the various programs he produced throughout the later years of his life. Bourdain's final show, Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown , had a similar concept to No Reservations , a program which took the chef and author to new levels in the early 21st Century, but also dives into the strange and less taken paths on his culinary journey to the heart of the human experience. All 12 seasons of the CNN program are streaming on HBO Max, meaning you can enjoy the Season 6 episode in Charleston, South Carolina, where Bourdain and some of the city's best chefs share stories over the best Waffle House has to offer .

Phil Rosenthal on Somebody Feed Phil

Somebody Feed Phil (Netflix)

One of the most earnest travel shows you can stream right now is the Netflix docuseries Somebody Feed Phil , which follows Everybody Loves Raymond co-creator Phil Rosenthal as he sets out to eat as much food and meet as much people around the world. Now in its fourth season, the Netflix original is very similar to Rosenthal's 2015 PBS series I'll Have What's Phil Having with the only major difference being the name. So, if you were a fan of the short-lived travel series, then Somebody Feed Phil is right for you. With cities like Lisbon, Copenhagen, Chicago, and Rio De Janerio all getting episodes of their own, this beautifully written and shot series about a man's love of food and the world is a must watch.

Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman on Long Way Up

Long Way Up (Apple TV+)

Unlike the previous four travel shows discussed here, Ewan McGregor's Long Way Up includes a single journey undertaken by the Scottish actor and his longtime friend Charley Boorman as they drive up the length of South and Central America on converted Harley Davidson electric motorcycles. Over the course of the 100 -day, 13,000-mile journey, the two explorers visit a number of UNICEF sites and programs in places like Bolivia, Peru, and Honduras and work with local residents on a number of different causes. The show is similar to 2004's Long Way Around and 2007's Long Way Down, which saw the pair go on epic journeys from London to New York and Scotland to South Africa, respectively. All three titles are currently streaming on Apple TV+ and are certainly worth the time.

Samantha Brown on Samantha Brown's Places To Love

Samantha Brown's Places To Love (PBS)

As far as travel show presenters go, there are few names that carry as much weight as Samantha Brown. The former Travel Channel mainstay who hosted a number of award-winning and influential programs over the years moved over to PBS for the 2018 show Samantha Brown's Places To Love . Over the course of the show's three seasons (all are available on the PBS website with no registration required), Brown has taken viewers around the world to some of the most unique spots that are often off the beaten path. Whether Brown is exploring places like Cajun Country in southern Louisiana, Lake Geneva in Switzerland, or Budapest, Hungary, there is something charming and unexpected by this easy-to-watch series.

Conan O'Brien on Conan Without Borders

Conan Without Borders (Netflix, HBO Max)

Longtime late-night talk show host Conan O'Brien has done a little bit of everything over the course of his nearly 40-year career ( Saturday Night Live , The Simpsons , multiple talk shows), so it's only natural that he would eventually have a travel show of his own. But Conan Without Borders (which is streaming on Netflix and HBO Max) isn't your normal travel show. Sure, O'Brien goes to places like Korea, Cuba, Mexico, and Armenia over the course of 13 episodes, but during those travels, the former Tonight Show host brings his unique brand of comedy wherever he goes and finds himself in some insane situations in places like the DMZ on the border of South and North Korea or starring in a telenovela in Mexico City.

Rebel Wilson and Richard Ayoade on Travel Man

Travel Man (Hulu)

Richard Ayoade , who is probably best well remembered for his turn Maurice Moss on the British comedy series The IT Crowd , was the longtime host of the the Channel 4 travel documentary sereies Travel Man . Over the course of the show's first 10 seasons (seven of which are available on Hulu), Ayoade would spend 48 hours in various cities around the world and would explore each of them with a different celebrity. Whether he is spending two days in Florence with Rebel Wilson , 48 hours in Los Angeles with Lena Dunham , or a holiday in Hong Kong with Jon Hamm , this highly entertaining and informative program brings both the laughs and appreciation for the world around us.

Albert Lin on Lost Cities with Albert Lin

Lost Cities With Albert Lin (Disney+)

And then there is the National Geographic Channel adventure travel program Lost Cities with Albert Lin , which follows the world renowned explorer as he uses state-of-the-art technology to scan various ruins around the world and builds recreations of the cities that once stood as the center of ancient civilizations. Part action-adventure and part history lesson, Lost Cities provides the best of both worlds and ends being one of the most inventive travel and archeological shows you can find. The first season of the show can be enjoyed in its entirety on Disney+ , meaning you'll be digging through sites like El Dorado and Stonehenge in no time.

That is just a sampling of all the great travel shows you can enjoy if you are spending the holidays locked in your house. If those titles don't hold you over and you're looking for something more adventurous, you can always seek out the wild Finnish travel show Madventures which is unfortunately not streaming anywhere at this time.

Philip Sledge

Philip grew up in Louisiana (not New Orleans) before moving to St. Louis after graduating from Louisiana State University-Shreveport. When he's not writing about movies or television, Philip can be found being chased by his three kids, telling his dogs to stop barking at the mailman, or chatting about professional wrestling to his wife. Writing gigs with school newspapers, multiple daily newspapers, and other varied job experiences led him to this point where he actually gets to write about movies, shows, wrestling, and documentaries (which is a huge win in his eyes). If the stars properly align, he will talk about For Love Of The Game being the best baseball movie of all time.

Gordon Ramsay cutting pork during the big cook

While filming Season 2 of National Geographic Channel’s Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted, the star chef preps a pork dish in Kodagu, India.

How to cook a piranha? Gordon Ramsay on skills he learned making travel TV

As ‘Uncharted’ returns, the celeb chef chats pepper hunting in India, bull riding in Indonesia, and post-pandemic trips.

Of course, chef Gordon Ramsay looks comfortable in the kitchen. But his popular National Geographic Channel series, Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted , also proves the Michelin-starred chef is adept at trekking through remote rain forests and rappelling off cliffs in search of wild ingredients. As Season 2 of the show launches, viewers can join him in spots from Kerala, India, to rural Louisiana as he lets local experts serve as his professors and cooking teachers.

We spoke to Ramsay on May 26, while he sheltered with his family at home in England during the coronavirus crisis. He discussed his hopes for the future of travel as well as the life and adventure lessons he’s learned while out filming Season 2 of Uncharted , which debuts June 7 at 10 p.m. EST.

How will travel change in a post-pandemic world?

It’s safety first right now. But we can never leave behind the excitement of travel and curiosity—that is fundamentally important. We need to travel and continue taking amazing adventures because there’s something breathtaking in doing that and exposing ourselves to new places. This issue is about time and staying strong, but we need to instill confidence back in one another. That can be done easily through food: breaking bread, understanding cultures, sharing the excitement of adventure and travel.

Gordon Ramsay and Chef Shri Bala enjoying fresh coconut juice

While filming in Kanur, India, Gordon Ramsay and chef Shri Bala sample the region’s fresh coconut juice.

When seeking new adventures, how do you deal with unpredictable events?

I like to manage on the spot. In filming the show, I don’t usually like to be overbriefed. I need to fail two or three times before I get things right. When I was attempting to hold onto two bulls in Indonesia to ski in the mud of a rice paddy, it took a few tries. But every time I use the steering wheel on a car now, I can’t stop thinking about how to turn a bull in a paddy field. I sort of reminisce about what my life has been in Uncharted , but I’m actually happier inside that zone because it all relates to food. I may stick out like a sore thumb, but I love it and I’m seriously comfortable with it all.

Did you draw on any of your travel experiences while stuck at home?

I used some of the techniques I learned while traveling, like butterflying black piranha, which I learned in Guyana . But I did it with a sea bass off the Cornish coast—split it straight down and opened it up, and grilled it over the barbecue and finished it with some lemon. Passing that on to my son just weeks after doing the same thing in the jungle was pretty amazing. No pots or pans, no olive oil, no zester, no chilies, and we got to spend the sunset enjoying this one bass in a different way.

Where do you want to travel after the pandemic subsides?

South America is next. Brazil and Argentina, for instance. The robustness of their food, and the way they grill and preserve, really excites me. Add in the adventure of some of that outback mountaineering, too.

Did any of the destinations surprise you?

I’ve been to India before, so I thought my familiarity would make things less exciting. But in Kerala, I understood again how the area’s history and regionalization affect how important the peppercorn is to the people there. Just going into the jungle to get peppercorns from the tree and cook with them a few minutes later was a breathtaking experience. Like the beginning of a journey, it gives you the sense of how those foundational blocks began and got layered over time to build a regional reputation. All these things bring back the importance of how good ingredients can taste when they’re sourced locally. There’s nothing like tasting the food of a destination when you’re there.

What should viewers expect in new episodes of Uncharted ?

Season 2 for me is like Season 1 on steroids. We’ve upped the ante in terms of the destinations and adventures. It’s a little bit rawer, and we were ambitious. Where we filmed in Guyana, for instance, was one of the deepest and most remote areas of the jungle that I’d ever experienced. Jumping out of a helicopter into shark-infested waters in Durban, South Africa ; net fishing in India; and diving in Tasmania all were quite challenging. But in pushing forward in this season, we’ve found much deeper insights and another layer of jeopardy.

What have you learned on the road this season?

One of the big things I’ve noticed is communities [paying] attention to invasive species. People who live in destinations understand the devastation [they] can bring to the environment, like the nutria in southern Louisiana that damage plants’ root systems and destroy the wetlands. It’s been a challenge to make nutria a food item on menus, despite it tasting good, because it’s known locally as a swamp rat.

(Related: Find out how the water-loving, native plant-chomping nutria invaded the U.S.)

In Guyana, it was incredible to see the utilization of what’s under your feet and all around you in the jungle—watching people waste nothing and hunt for what they need that day. I had to take target practice with my new bow and arrow before going out hunting, because you can’t afford to waste arrows when they’re all handmade and essential for survival. Being adventurous to learn about what’s happening locally in all these places helps me understand each destination so much more.

Whoopi Goldberg Shuts Down Rumors She Was On The Epstein List On 'The View': "I Have Nothing To Hide"

'no taste like home with antoni porowski' will see the 'queer eye' star serving food history on nat geo, stream it or skip it: 'kitchen nightmares' season 8 on fox, where gordon ramsay tries to fix dysfunctional restaurants for the first time since 2014, stream it or skip it: 'gordon ramsay's food stars' on fox, where the famously hot-tempered chef gets his 'apprentice' on.

Gordon Ramsay ‘s American Road Trip is actually an edited version of the 2nd season of  Gordon, Gino & Fred’s Road Trip , a series that aired on ITV in Britain and is on the UK version of BritBox. That’s important to note, because it means this wasn’t just a random road trip for Ramsay and his buddies Gino D’Acampo and Fred Sirieix, it was a well-planned season of a food and travel show. But, by taking a four-episode, 3-plus-hour season and whittling it down to 82 minutes (without ads), does the show still make sense?

GORDON RAMSAY’S AMERICAN ROAD TRIP : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

The Gist: Gordon Ramsay, whose shows seemingly fill up half of Fox’s primetime schedule, took his two best friends, Italian chef Gino D’Acampo and French maître d’hôtel Fred Siriex, in a souped-up RV on a road trip through the western United States and Tijuana.  Gordon Ramsay’s American Road Trip is the result.

Actually, as mentioned above, this is an edited-down version of the second season of the ITV series Gordon, Gino & Fred’s Road Trip , where the trio took the RV, nicknamed “Betty,” on the road from Tijuana to Las Vegas and Arizona, back to Los Angeles, up to San Francisco, and then back down and over to Texas. Along the way, the friends do different American things, like work on a dude ranch, race buggies on a track (where Gino somehow crashes into Betty, inexplicably parked near the track), go fishing, and try their hand at real Texas barbecue for a crowd or rodeo workers.

But, the special — edited in a way so that they start in Las Vegas, go to AZ, then LA, then SF,  then Mexico and Texas — also shows the years-long friendship between Ramsay, D’Acampo and Siriex. They make silly bets with each other; at Gordon’s LA mansion, Fred and Gino bet Gordon that the burger that Gordon’s mom likes better will have to dive into Gordon’s pool buck naked. They bust each others’ balls, as Gordon scares Gino with the stuffed deead animals adorning the cabin they stayed in after fishing.

They also discover the west via various cuisines, like when they race to make fortune cookies in San Fran’s Chinatown, or when they go to Snow’s BBQ in Texas to talk to pitmaster Tootsie Tomanetz .

What Specials Will It Remind You Of?: A goofier version of Ramsay’s other travel series, Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted.

Performance Worth Watching: Gino D’Acampo readily admits he’s not the manliest alpha male around, but it’s fun watching him get scared in a helicopter over the Grand Canyon or duck into the gondola of a hot air balloon over Napa.

Memorable Dialogue: After Gino tries to wedge the RV down Lombard Street in SF, he tells Gordon he could have made it. “Just because you’re the king of the kitchen, doesn’t mean you’re the king of the street.”

Sex and Skin: Besides seeing these three middle-aged men skinny dipping in Texas, or Gino wearing assless chaps (appropriately blurred out for American network television), there’s nothing.

Our Take: The disjointedness of  Gordon Ramsay’s American Road Trip made me wonder if this wasn’t intended to be a special, and my suspicion was confirmed when I found that it was the second season of  Gordon, Gino’s and Fred’s Road Trip. That season was only four 45-50 minute episodes, but that also means that more than half of the trip was sliced out to accommodate the 85-minute (without commercials) running time for Fox. The rejiggering of the order, as well as the seeming incompleteness of the trip, makes the special tough to watch.

There’s also the fact that, like in  Uncharted , Ramsay uses his locales and the people in it more as a backdrop for his cooking and the shenanigans of him and his buddies than as a deep exploration of the people and culture of a region, and how it’s communicated through its food. Not that it’s a bad thing; not everyone needs to be the late Anthony Bourdain or, as Taste The Nation showed, Padma Lakshmi. But there are points during the special where they come off as Ugly Europeans, picking off the most stereotypical of American experiences but not digging any deeper.

Because of his experience in the States, Ramsay seems to be more interested in the deeper American culture than his buddies, no matter what they say about always wanting to be cowboys or some such. It’s a bit jarring, but a lot of that may be hyped up for the cameras.

What we liked the most about the special was the friendship between Gordon, Gino and Fred. Yes, it’s pretty immature at times, given the fact that all of these men are well into their 40s and 50s. But they also keep each other in check, and any program that shows Ramsay on a human level instead of a mouth yelling curses, which seems to be how Fox wants him to look, is a bonus. But there’s too much about this special that made us cringe.

Our Call: SKIP IT. If you can get hold of  Gordon, Gino & Fred’s Road Trip , watch that instead of the Frankensteined version of it.  Gordon Ramsay’s American Road Trip doesn’t say enough about Ramsay, his buddies or America to be worth your time.
