The Smashing Pumpkins: The World Is A Vampire Tour, PICA Port Melbourne, April 22nd 2023 – Live Review

The World is a Vampire Tour is more like a mini festival. With its singular stage, you won’t have to sacrifice seeing one performer over the other. And with this line-up, I would have been gutted to have missed any of them.

If you’re not too keen on standing at the barrier all night, Billy Corgan ’s love of wrestling will keep you entertained. Yes, wrestling! With a ring setup outside, you can catch the NWA (National Wrestling Alliance) and the WAOA (Wrestling Alliance of Australia) battle it out in between sets.

I would have been excited enough to finally see The Smashing Pumpkins live, but the addition of Battlesnake , Amyl and the Sniffers , Jane’s Addiction , and local support XCalibre , just made the whole thing so much sweeter. I know some people want to save time or don’t have any interest in the opening acts, but all of these bands are so solid and will make the whole experience so much better. Not only do you get more music, but you will also be supporting some outstanding local talent.

The first band were Melbourne locals, XCalibre . Despite it being early, the locals showcased a sound that brought the crowd to the stage. The band’s energy was matched with those in the crowd and by the end of their set, the most certainly gained a few extra fans.

In the lead up to this show, I’ve been telling everyone about the pure theatrical fun that is Battlesnake . For those of you that haven’t heard of them, Battlesnake bring a sacrilegious, old school metal energy that would make the Prince of Darkness himself proud. Stepping out in catholic priest garb, front man Sam Frank was adorned with gold jewel horns and pointed gloves. He had the power that matched the energy of the great metal bands of the 1970s. If you are not already convinced, acting as the band’s flag bearer and keytarist, Billy O’Key exemplifies Battlesnake ’s genius and overall metal concept. Battlesnake are undoubtedly one of the most fun and bewitching bands you’ll experience.

After Battlesnake , the high level of energy was continued courtesy of another Melbourne band, Amyl and the Sniffers . Carried onto the stage by wrestler, ‘ThrillBilly’ Silas Mason , Amy Taylor was met by ecstatic cheers from the audience. Seeing clips of Amyl and the Sniffers online is one thing, but to experience them live is a wild ride. Amy Taylor continues her reputation as an enigmatic front woman. Whilst comparisons to Chrissy Amphlett are valid and correct, I would compare her primal magnetism to the iconic Iggy Pop . Smashing out crowd favourites and pure bangers with ‘Some Mutts (Can’t be Muzzled)’ , ‘Guided by Angels’ and ‘Security’ . Amy ’s respect for her crowd is unmatched, challenging anyone to a fight if they made others feel unsafe.

Amyl and the Sniffers , undoubtably have an epic front woman, but the other band members match Amy ’s energy. Guitarist Dec Martens finger picking is hypnotic, and if you stare at him for too long you might have a hard time looking away. Ending their epic set with ‘Hertz ’, Amyl and the Sniffers had strengthened their relationship with current fans and no doubt secured a bunch of new fans.

I’ll have to admit my knowledge of Janes Addiction is limited to their albums featuring Dave Navarro, so his absence did hinder my interest a little bit. Their sound mixing was the weakest after a truly solid mixing for all the other bands. Despite Navarro’s absence, Perry Farrell still fronted the band like a man possessed. Sadly, the energy from the crowd after the previous bands, Janes Addiction seemed to drop the ball a little bit. Still as great live band, the crowd’s reaction appeared to juxtapose this.

Now was the moment we’d all been waiting for, The Smashing Pumpkins . Starting with a reworked version of ‘Atum’ and fading into ‘Empires’ , it was clear that Billy Corgan hadn’t lost anything since the band’s incarnation. It’s been almost 30 years since the release of ‘Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness’ so I could forgive Billy Corgan if he had lost some his vocal power. But my worries were put at ease as he snarled into ‘Bullet with Butterfly Wings’ , complete with the same angst as the record from 1995.

Billy Corgan has always been praised for his setlist composition, the first half was mostly slower songs featuring sweet moments between Corgan and James Iha . Corgan handed the reigns over to Iha more than I expected. One example of this was Iha ’s heartfelt cover of ‘The Churches Under the Milky Way‘ . Iha ’s rendition fit beautifully with the vibe and didn’t stall the show. My heart skipped a beat as the two played a stunning acoustic version of ‘Tonight, Tonight’ . Experiencing my favourite songs played live and sounding amazing, will always put me on cloud nine, and this show was no exception.

The second half of the show was much heavier and featured more of their popular radio hits and the crowd’s energy roared into action. And whilst The Smashing Pumpkins have a wide range of songs to choose from, Corgan added in some covers too. One came as an almost unrecognisable version of the Talking Heads’ ‘Once in a Lifetime’ and it oozed Billy Corgan ’s signature innovation. A moment that did seem a little bit out of place was a short tribute to John Farnham with vocalist Katie Cole performing the chorus of ‘You’re The Voice’ acapella. Whilst Cole does have an incredible voice, I do question why this song was chosen as the song leading up to the band members introduction.

The final songs to end the show couldn’t have been more perfect. Opting for some of the heaviest songs from their extensive discography, ‘Cherub Rock’ , sent the crowd into a frenzy. And whilst it came directly after the slower section of the set, it wasn’t jarring as it was apparent this was what the audience were waiting for. As excited as the crowd had been for ‘Cherub Rock’ , it was ‘1979’ and ‘Zero’ that brought on an irresistible urge to dance. As the two songs are probably The Smashing Pumpkins ’ most known tracks, this reaction from the crowd wasn’t surprising.

Corgan has received criticism over the years for his egotistical attitude and self-indulgent guitar solos, but I think if you’ve got the skills to back it up, why not? And Corgan most definitely obliged. Towards the end of the set, Corgan altered ‘Beguiled’ and ‘Silverfuck’ and ripped into the aforementioned guitar solos. His skills paired with the tremendous lighting design was bewitching and hypnotic, making it near impossible to look away from the stage.

Billy Corgan does have a reputation for being a perfectionist, and if this show is the result, I can’t criticise him one bit. He certainly knows how to give the audience their monies worth. Everyone involved in this show must be praised. Sound, lighting, mixing, tech, and the whole crew behind the scenes have produced a perfect concert experience.

The Smashing Pumpkins may be one of the greatest rock bands I’ve ever seen perform. They haven’t lost that spark that catapulted them to fame in the 90s. And if they are still going this strong after more than 30 years, there is no doubt they will continue to impress crowds around the world for years to come.

The World Is A Vampire Tour is touring around Australia this April. With only six shows left of the Australian leg with Ballarat on April 23rd, Adelaide on April 26th, Melbourne again on April 27th, Newcastle on April 29th, and the Gold Coast on April 30th, don’t miss your chance to experience this unique concert experience.

The Smashing Pumpkins returned to Ottawa for the first time in a couple of decades on Sunday and proceeded to make up for lost time with a dazzling show at the Canadian Tire Centre that went a long way towards re-establishing their position in the upper echelons of modern rock music.

Formed in Chicago in the late 80s, the Pumpkins have experienced plenty of drama in their career, some of it instigated by the whims of founder and creative force, Billy Corgan, a towering, bald-headed figure who appeared even more imposing Sunday with his goth-inspired eye makeup and long black coat.

After breakups, personnel changes and other challenges, the current iteration of the Pumpkins is a monster of a band, with long-time guitarist James Iha back in the lineup, along with drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, guitarist Jeff Schroeder, bassist Jack Bates, and keyboard-playing backup vocalist Katie Cole, who was the only woman on stage of the three-act bill. Opening acts Rival Sons and Interpol both sported all-male lineups.

Considering the Pumpkins have a new triple album, Atum: A Rock Opera in Three Acts, released over the past year, a casual fan might have had concerns about hearing unfamiliar new material in concert. That’s not the case on this excursion, dubbed the World is a Vampire Tour. Corgan has constructed a setlist based on the hits, including just three tracks from the ambitious new project, which, by the way, fit right into the melodic, guitar-driven intensity of the night.

The band was on fire from the opening song, Everlasting Gaze, with Corgan’s grating voice cutting through the staggering wall of sound. While his singing can seem harsh on the ears, the unique dissonance lifts the songs and he leans into them with passion, plus he has a theatrical stage presence that makes it tough to take your eyes off him.

Adding to the theatricality was the incredible lighting design that framed the set with an ever-changing array of multi-coloured beams of light.

Between songs, Corgan and Iha bantered like old pals, with Corgan sharing an anecdote about spending the day in Ottawa with his two children. Strolling along the Rideau Canal, he said somebody overheard his kids wondering about the statue of Lt. Col. John By (whom he referred to as “Mr. By”).

“A Canadian went by and said, ‘Hey, he’s the guy who built the locks, eh?’” Corgan said, making a valiant attempt to mimic a Canadian accent. “Always helpful, the Canadians,” he added.

The band started strong and gained power as the show progressed, thrilling the estimated 10,000 or so in attendance. Highlights were numerous, including sing-along hits like Today, Disarm, Bullet with Butterfly Wings and 1979, as well as some unexpected cover songs, specifically a deconstructed version of the Talking Heads’ classic, Once in a Lifetime, and the obscure Manfred Mann tune, Hubble Bubble (Toil and Trouble).

Another moment that showed the human side of Corgan the rock star came during the anthemic new tune, Beguiled, when the bandleader’s young son and daughter, wearing protective headphones, joined their dad on stage and danced along enthusiastically.

Earlier in the evening, the two opening acts each played a generous opening set. Nashville’s Rival Sons demonstrated a testosterone-fueled style of blues-influenced back-to-basics that included a heartfelt message on the perils of addiction, while New York City alt-rockers Interpol put an artful spin on their late-90s moodiness.  In all, it added up to a four-hour-plus marathon of rock ‘n’ roll that cemented the stature of Smashing Pumpkins, re-introduced us to Interpol and gave Rival Sons a chance to hit hard and collect new fans. A great show, despite the gender imbalance.

The Smashing Pumpkins Reunion Tour Is A Massive Gift To Their Fans

Philip Cosores

The Smashing Pumpkins are not a band that smiles often. And I’m not just talking about when Billy Corgan rides a roller coaster (although he did return to Disneyland this week and showed off some joy while making playful jabs at his previous viral moment). When the Smashing Pumpkins are onstage, it’s a show full of technical chops, complex emotions, and overwhelming sensory blasts. The effect of these is often elation, but they come from places of angst, anger, longing, and wonder. Unabashed joy coming from the stage would feel almost out of place.

But when Billy Corgan cracked his first smile towards the end of the band’s first proper reunion show at the Troubadour on June 27, as he extended his solo to mindbending places on “Porcelina Of The Vast Oceans,” it became infectious. Quickly, Jeff Schroeder and James Iha — playing his first full set with the band in 18 years — shared knowing glances and unveiled massive grins as well, both a little bewildered by where Corgan was taking the song, and with the relief that comes in nearly completing a performance that was nearly two decades in the making. But more than anything, the smiles let the audience know that the band was indeed having fun. That playing these old songs with old friends went beyond just a paycheck and a check off the to-do list. It was at that moment that made the reunion felt real and vital , and the internet critiques and internal squabbles fell away. This was really happening, and it actually was pretty awesome.

smashing pumpkins tour review 2023

Last night, the Smashing Pumpkins debuted the full arena show in Glendale, Arizona. Even in just the couple weeks since the Los Angeles warm-up concert, things had changed in the band, including adding a sixth member in keyboardist Katie Cole. But the blueprint for the Shiny And Oh So Bright Tour had been laid long in advance. The concert would focus on music from the band’s classic ’90s era , but would also fold in new material written specifically for this iteration, including the recently debuted barnburner “ Solara .” Longtime bassist D’arcy Wretzky wouldn’t be involved , much to the chagrin of her and a vocal portion of the band’s longtime fans. James Iha, though, would be back, along with Jimmy Chamberlin on the drums, giving Billy Corgan a backing band that is sneaky in its technical mastery.

A decade ago, and this would have been the kind of excursion that would debut at Coachella, but the festival landscape has shifted so much that the Smashing Pumpkins have become a kind of legacy act that is not at home performing on the same stages as SZA and Diplo. So instead, fans get the Pumpkins in arenas, swelled to six members, and featuring the biggest stage production of their career. Fans get to see Corgan endure more costume changes than a Taylor Swift concert , and get to experience covers from the iconic (Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide”) to the unexpected (David Bowie’s “Space Oddity”) or the indulgent ( a version of Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway To Heaven” that was paired with a bunch of dudes dressed as monks wheeling a Corgan relic around the arena ). If the band was trying to prove that doing the reunion at this scale was the only way to properly pay homage to their history, then they spared no expense and took the time to do just that.

So it is with a little irony that the most successful moments of the set were the parts that found the band playing old songs faithfully without much need for over-the-top theatrics. For much of the band’s creative peak, this was who the band was, the kind of ’90s alt-rock icons that could get sweaty in a small club and blow the minds of their fans through their technical prowess and songwriting craft. It was only after the success of 1995’s Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness that the group began exploring a more ambitious visual aesthetic, and both iterations of the band very much existed side by side on Thursday night. Surely there are some fans out there who are just as interested in hearing the rarely played classics like “Drown” or “Soma” performed faithfully and also witness moving set pieces and between-song video speeches from a character that looked a lot like Sugar Ray’s Mark McGrath. But mostly it felt like two different bands were playing creative tug-o-war, and it just comes down to personal preference which one was preferred.

smashing pumpkins tour review 2023

Still, the three-hour set had to exceed most people’s wildest expectations. There were moments of pure bliss throughout the audience, be it more well-known endeavors like a ferocious “Cherub Rock” or deeper cuts like the best Smashing Pumpkins song ever written “Mayonaise.” Songs that found the band getting quieter also went over particularly well, like the tender “Thirty-Three” which saw lyrics projected so fans could sing along, or the Iha-fronted “Blew Away” that gave the adored guitarist a chance to take the spotlight. And the band is not light on hits, with everything from “Zero” to “1979” to “Tonight Tonight” to “Eye” going over splendidly. Three hours is a really long concert, though, and some of the fat could be trimmed — a couple of the aforementioned covers, a Corgan-at-piano run that included “For Martha” and “To Sheila” that felt like a seriously lull — but its hard to get to down on a band for giving its fans their money’s worth. And with tickets in some markets struggling to move, a look at this massive setlist might be the best way to get that ball rolling.

There are ultimately two ways to look at the Pumpkins’ Shiny And Oh So Bright Tour. One is like a generous gift for fans who have waited for nearly 20 years to have Corgan, Iha, and Chamberlin performing together and focusing on the strongest songs of their career. The other is this exercise in self-indulgence, where Corgan displays audacity to place his band among the greats in rock history and give his bizarre aesthetic choices a home. I tend to side with the former, even if I can see the points of the latter, and maybe that’s just taking into account the small shows the band performed in Los Angeles before this arena tour, where they made an effort to give core fans an inexpensive (or free) chance to get close to the band while also dusting off rarities for a sort of dress rehearsal. But even the wholeheartedness of Thursday’s performance was endearing more than anything, with Corgan fully embracing the weight of the moment and showing a willingness to take the biggest swing possible. It was refreshing to see a band not play it safe, something even rarer for a band as seasoned as the Pumpkins.

smashing pumpkins tour review 2023

On the opening song of the night, Corgan took the stage by himself, backed by blinding white light, getting the reception he deserved as the primary creative force behind the band. He then played the opening strums of “Disarm” to the eruption of the audience, happy to join in a singalong of one of the band’s most well-known tracks. Behind Corgan, a slide show of photos showed him as a child, some of them animated over with vampire teeth and “666” scrawlings, drawing a direct line from the early moments of his life to the present. “I used to be a little boy,” he sang while the images confirmed just that, and the tour, for better or worse, allows for him to bask in dreams fulfilled, to bathe in past accomplishments, and to give nostalgia a deserved make-over.

But one line from that song stood out even more: “Send this smile over to you.” And by the looks of the fans who danced in the aisles throughout, who put their arms around each other to yell out lyrics, and who stood in their place for every minute of the impressive show, that smile was received. The band doesn’t need to show it for their fans to feel it.

When  The Smashing Pumpkins  first emerged out of Chicago in 1988, the world had never heard a band quite like them. They spun together rock, pop, shoe-gaze, metal, goth, psychedelia, and electronic into a kaleidoscope of saccharine melodies, fuzzy distortion, bombastic orchestration, incendiary fretwork, eloquent songcraft, and unshakable hooks. Upon their formation, their sound was different, iconoclastic, and wholly new—and it still is today. As a result, they’ve sold over 30 million albums worldwide and collected two GRAMMY® Awards, two MTV VMAs, and an American Music Award. Their catalog is highlighted by the platinum  Gish  [1991], the quadruple-platinum  Siamese Dream  [1993], diamond-certified  Mellon Collie  and the Infinite Sadness  [1995], platinum  Adore  [1998], and gold  Machina/The Machines of God  [2000]. In 2018, they embarked on one of their most successful tours ever, the  Shiny and Oh So Bright Tour , followed by  SHINY AND OH SO BRIGHT, VOL. 1 / LP: NO PAST. NO FUTURE. NO SUN.  Meanwhile, 2020 saw the release of the band’s eleventh full-length and latest double album,  CYR . As prolific as ever,  The Smashing Pumpkins  are currently working on new music. More details to come.

Interpol

Interpol began in New York in 1997, when guitarist Daniel Kessler recruited bassist Carlos Dengler and singer/guitarist Paul Banks to form a band. In 2002, with Sam Fogarino on drums, the band signed to Matador records and released Turn On The Bright Lights, which made it to 10th position on NME’s list of 2002’s top releases and Pitchfork named it the year’s #1 album. Over the next two decades would go on to wide critical and commercial acclaim, with six subsequent high charting records on the Billboard 200; earning rave reviews across the map from Rolling Stone to TIME; performing on late night television shows including the Late Late show with David Letterman and Conan and playing major festivals like Coachella and Glastonbury and headlining Mexico’s Corona Capital. The band (Banks, Kessler and Fogarino) released their 7th album, “The Other Side Of Make-Believe”, in July 2022 to critical acclaim. MOJO called the album “quietly masterful”, Clash hailed it as “some of the boldest, most uncompromising work of their career”, and NME described it as “a confident, rewarding and subtly adventurous new chapter”. They’re touring across the globe in 2023.

Rival Sons

Rival Sons play rock ‘n’ roll in its purest form without apology or pretense. Instead, they simply plug in, turn up, and rip on a path of their own. Along the way, they’ve architected a critically acclaimed catalog, including Pressure & Time [2011], Head Down [2012], Great Western Valkyrie [2014], Hollow Bones [2016], and FERAL ROOTS [2019]. The latter represented a creative and critical high watermark, scoring a pair of GRAMMY® Award nominations in the categories of “Best Rock Album” and “Best Rock Performance” for the single “Too Bad.” Elevating the band to another level, “Do Your Worst” vaulted to #1 at Rock Radio as their biggest hit to date, tallying north of 60 million streams and counting. Speaking to their impact, Rolling Stone attested, “Rival Sons have done their part to introduce new fans to rock.” Beyond sharing stages with everyone from Black Sabbath, The Rolling Stones, and AC/DC to Guns N’ Roses and Lenny Kravitz, they’ve ignited television shows such as The Late Late Show with James Corden. During 2021, they launched their own label Sacred Tongue Recordings distributed by Thirty Tigers and celebrated the tenth anniversary of Pressure & Time by performing the album in its entirety on tour. Ultimately, Rival Sons aren’t here to tell you exactly what to think or what to feel, but they’ll give you one hell of a ride if you let them. That ride twists and turns like never before on their 2023 seventh full-length LP, DARKFIGHTER [Low Country Sound / Atlantic Records] kickstarted by the single “Nobody Wants to Die.” https://www.rivalsons.com

Stone Temple Pilots

With over 70 million albums sold, Stone Temple Pilots roared on to the scene in 1992 with their raucous debut, Core. A breakout success, the album peaked #3 on the Billboard 200 chart, and dominated radio waves with hits like “Sex Type Thing,” “Wicked Garden,” and the Grammy-Award winning smash single, “Plush.” STP quickly distinguished themselves as a band beholden to no trend. Boasting the inimitable riffs of guitarist Dean DeLeo, the propulsive rhythm section of bassist Robert DeLeo and drummer Eric Kretz, and the charismatic baritone of frontman Scott Weiland, STP ruled airways, video playlists and charts alike over their legendary career. The band released their latest studio album, Perdida in 2020 with new lead singer, Jeff Gutt. Paste magazine described Perdida as the most sonically rich experience that Stone Temple Pilots have offered fans to date. www.stonetemplepilots.com

THE SMASHING PUMPKINS leader Billy Corgan said: "I grew up in a world where I needed to know bands like SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES and THE CURE existed, it meant there was a place for people like me to hang out and belong. That's what 'The World Is A Vampire' is about. Bringing back that sense of community. If you don't fit in, you belong here. It's about having a shared experience and respecting others, but ultimately having fun. A true alternative festival, where all the self-proclaimed weirdos and outsiders of the world can get together and have a party."

Along with news of their upcoming tour, the band released their brand-new single "Spellbinding" which received its radio debut this morning during a very special live appearance on "The Howard Stern Show" , revealing details of their upcoming tour and the release date for their highly anticipated third and final act of "Atum" , which is set for release on May 5. Act 3 will come with a special edition boxset featuring all 33 album tracks plus 10 additional previously unreleased songs.

"Atum" features 33-tracks in three acts and is the sequel to 1995's "Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness" and 2000's "Machina/The Machines Of God" . "Atum" was written and produced by Corgan over the past four years. 22 tracks have been released to date, with "Beguiled" continuing to climb at both Active Rock (peaked at #6) and Alternative Radio charts (#12).

In other news, Corgan 's popular podcast series "Thirty-Three With William Patrick Corgan" continues to quench the thirst of dedicated PUMPKINS fans all over the world, offering listeners the chance to hear never-before-released "Atum" tracks, as-well as diving into various aspects of the band's illustrious history. "Thirty-Three With William Patrick Corgan" is distributed by iHeartPodcasts and available on iHeartRadio and everywhere podcasts are heard.

Upon their formation, their sound was different, iconoclastic, and wholly new — and it still is today. As a result, they've sold over 30 million albums worldwide and collected two Grammy Awards , two MTV VMAs , and an American Music Award . Their catalog is highlighted by the platinum "Gish" (1991),the quadruple-platinum "Siamese Dream" (1993),diamond-certified "Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness" (1995),platinum "Adore" (1998) and gold "Machina/The Machines Of God" [2000]. In 2018, they embarked on one of their most successful tours ever, the "Shiny And Oh So Bright" tour, followed by "Shiny And Oh So Bright, Vol. 1 / Lp: No Past. No Future. No Sun." Meanwhile, 2020 saw the release of the band's eleventh full-length and latest double album, "Cyr" .

The Smashing Pumpkins Reveal 2023 North American Tour, New Single “Spellbinding”

by Tina Benitez-Eves March 28, 2023, 10:53 am

The Smashing Pumpkins have announced their 2023 North American This World Is a Vampire Tour and shared their new single “Spellbinding,” off their upcoming 12th album, Atum: A Rock Opera in Three Acts , out May 5.

Videos by American Songwriter

Featuring special guests Stone Temple Pilots, Interpol, and Rival Sons on select dates, the 26-date tour will kick off on July 28 in Las Vegas and conclude on Sept. 9 in Noblesville, Indiana.

The title of the tour, pulled from the band’s song “Bullet with Butterfly Wings,” off The Smashing Pumpkins ‘ 1995 album, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness , holds a deeper meaning for singer Billy Corgan.

“I grew up in a world where I needed to know bands like Siouxsie and the Banshees and The Cure existed, it meant there was a place for people like me to hang out and belong,” said Billy Corgan in a statement. “That’s what The World Is A Vampire is about, bringing back that sense of community. If you don’t fit in, you belong here.”

Corgan continued, “It’s about having a shared experience and respecting others, but ultimately having fun. A sequel to  Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness  and their 2000 album Machina/Machine of God , the 33-track Atum will be released as a special-edition box set featuring 10 additional unreleased tracks.

The Smashing Pumpkins have already released 22 tracks from the album, which was written and produced by Corgan over the past four years. Corgan has also been revealing previously unheard tracks off Atum on his podcast series Thirty-Three with William Patrick Corgan .

Smashing Pumpkins (formed in 1988) is an American alternative rock band formed by frontman Billy Corgan and guitarist James Iha.

Following the break-up of his gothic rock band The Marked, frontman Billy Corgan departed his home in St. Petersburg, Florida, U.S. and returned to his native city Chicago, U.S. Before long Corgan met rhythm guitarist James Iha and the two practiced and made their debut performance as a duo at the Polish Bar Chicago 21. The pair named themselves The Smashing Pumpkins and shortly after met bassist D’arcy Wretzky who was invited to join along with jazz drummer Jimmy Chamberlin.

The Smashing Pumpkins made their recording debut on a Chicago alternative rock compilation CD entitled “Light Into Dark”, which was followed by their sell-out debut single “I Am One” released in 1990 through Limited Potential Records. The band’s full-length debut arrived after signing with Caroline Records in 1991, “Gish”, produced by Butch Vig, fused alternative rock with heavy metal, psychedelia and dream pop, drawing comparisons with Jane’s Addiction. After subsequently releasing the EP “Lull” in October 1991, The Smashing Pumpkins signed with Virgin Records and supported their album with opening slots for bands such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jane’s Addiction and Guns N’ Roses.

In an attempt to move drummer Chamberlin away from his narcotic supply, the band moved to Marietta, Georgia in 1992 to record their sophomore album. With the help of producer Butch Vig again, “Siamese Dream” came about amidst a sea of turbulence within the band. Corgan, as with the first album, thought it was best for him alone to play all the guitar and bass parts, drawing some resentment from Wretzky and Iha. Chamberlin quickly found new drug connections and was absent for days at a time and Corgan was responding to his depression by spending all of his time in the studio.

Followed by a relentless touring schedule with appearances at 1994’s Lollapalooza tour and Reading Festival in 1995, Virgin issued a B-sides and rarities compilation titled “Pisces Iscariot” which reached No. 4 on the Billboard 200.

For the follow-up album frontman Corgan wrote fifty-six songs which ultimately got narrowed down to twenty-eight for 1995’s “Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness”. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, became double platinum selling, earned the band seven Grammy nominations and spawned the hits “Bullet with Butterfly Wings” and “1979”. Around this time The Smashing Pumpkins were considered one of the biggest bands in the world, with considerable airplay on MTV and an appearance on the Simpsons.

In 1996 touring keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin and Chamberlin overdosed on heroin in a hotel room in New York City, Melvoin died and Chamberlin fortunately escaped the same fate. Chamberlin was subsequently fired and Corgan named “Mellon Collie…” the band’s last conventional rock album. True to his word the album’s follow-up “Adore” arrived in 1998 and represented a huge shift towards electronica and gothic influences. The album sold around 830,000 copies which was considered a failure by the record label. The band supported the release with a 17-date North American tour funded entirely out of the band’s pocket, of which they donated $2.8 million in total to charity over the course of.

After a short lived reunion with rehabilitated Chamberlin and the departure of Wretzky, who was replaced by Melissa Auf der Maur, The Smashing Pumpkins released their fifth full-length “Machina/The Machines of God” in 2000. The album performed poorly compared to its predecessors, however was argued to be one of their strongest. In 2000 the band announced they were disbanding after independently releasing “Machina II/The Friends & Enemies of Modern Music” in September.

In 2005 Corgan took out a full-page ad in The Chicago Tribune to announce The Smashing Pumpkins were returning. Chamberlin was the only original other member to actually return, but alongside new guitarist Jeff Schroder and bassist Ginger Reyes they released the album “Zeitgiest” in 2007. From 2009 Corgan released a scattered selection of songs from a 44-track concept titled “Teargarden by Kaleidyscope” and followed by the full-length “Oceana” in 2010. The announcement of two new albums came in 2014 to tie up “Teargarden” concept, with the names “Monuments to an Elegy” and “Day for Night”.

Live reviews

I used to listen to Smashing Pumpkins growing up. I didn't listen to a lot of their stuff, probably only like a song or two, so it was kind of neat to see this concert. I'm not sure what I was expecting when I went to see them, but the concert performance was overall a lot more low key than I was expecting, but not in a bad way.

As it is, it's kind of what I expect from an alternate rock group. The venue is very fitting for this band and their performance, a dark place with low lighting giving off the feeling of low energy and little movement. There's a certain kind of drab intensity I feel while watching this concert, kind of like time has slowed down and the outside world doesn't exist, at least for now. It's oddly enjoyable.

During the songs, the crowd is very quiet, but will show their appreciation in between songs. Billy Corgan does a good job singing, as always. The rest of the band is very good as well, especially the drummer. Billy as I recollect him looks very young (due to this being over 20 years ago), and there's a grunge feel to the concert because of the times. The music and atmosphere feels kind of raw but in the grungy sort of way.

Report as inappropriate

If it had not been for the love, respect, and talent of the Pumpkins, the entire night would have been trash. A certain entertainer from across the pond is just a mirage of an oasis since splitting with his brother, but he made matters worse. From his first interactions with the crowd and everyone after, he made it a point to belittle the community, state, and fans with "F" bomb laden disparaging remarks. His condescending attitude oozed from every pure of his being. Hemade completely clear from comments such as the first of his set, 75% of his set, was "fucking for him" and "buy his fucking merchandise because he isn't making a dime just fucking performing there," made it evident that he truly was a wretched person consumed by greed and former fame. His parting shot was "fuck Rogers, fuck Arkansas, we're never fucking coming back to this fucking state again!" May he have a safe, expensive, and miserable stay and trip back from Arkansas and the United States.

The Pumpkins killed it as did AFI!

I didn't see Smashing Pumpkins lately. I saw them at the Arlene Schnitzer Auditorium in 2016 and the show was great but I didn't buy the tickets. I had a dream while napping the afternoon of the show telling me, I need to go up to the box office at the Schnitzer with $80 and see if I can get tickets. At that time I was listening to Siamese Dream everyday and finding for the first time so long after it was released I was amazed. We got to the box office and they were sold out so a guy in line was watching the whole thing and offered an extra ticket he had because his girlfriend didn't want to go and then another guy about 15 people back said basically the same thing, so I had 2 tickets for free for me and my date. It pays to listen to your dreams " Siamese Dream's" that is..

This was an amazing show! They played flawlessly in my opinion. From songs like 'Today', and 'Tonight, Tonight', to David Bowie's 'Fame' their energy tore the roof off the Warfield!!

What I especially liked was there was no opening act, it was just them, what I came to see!

This was one of the best shows I've seen in a very long time!

The last time I had an opportunity to see them was around 1992/1993 when they headlined Lollapalooza. At the time they only played one song because it seemed they were wasted on something! I remember being very disappointed with this.

This time I was happy to hear Billy say that he never appreciated the fans when he was younger, but now he does! This really reflected in their performance!

What a show! I am still in awe!

I had never been to a smashing pumpkins concert before and I didn't know what to expect. Their songs are great. They played all the ones I am familiar with. They sang awesome. However I was not impressed with their stage show. They just stood there like statues. The background set was boring. And the stage lights kept blinding me and gave me a headache. I actually fell asleep during smashing pumpkins. Marilyn Manson was also there. He was kick ass. Awesome stage show as always. Seen him like 5xs before. Interacted with the audience. Great background set and props as always. Loved it,the best part of the show was Manson!!!!

3 stars. Overall a good show and reasonably priced. They did a great job on a Bowie cover and the first half of the show was great. The second half was featured a lot of Zwan and their newer stuff which I like to call twitchy techo rock, Just not feeling it. They did a version of "Stand Inside Your Love" where Katie Cole leads the vocals, it was amazing. Billy's got a signature voice but I think it sounds better in a duet. Sorry to end on a bad note but, I don't know how you screw up Disarm but they found a way... Billy Solo with an organ. Skip the bad Rolling stones cover and get out before the encore.

I was fortunate enough to see this show in OKC on Saturday and then again on Wednesday in Dallas. Even though it was the same set both nights, I loved every second of it. While they do play a good amount of hits, some of the other tunes and covers they play are really what stand out over the 3+ hour set. The stage production is probably the best I've ever seen them have. I've seen The Smashing Pumpkins every chance I've had for the past 22 years and Billy and Jimmy still shred their instruments and impress me every time. If you're on the fence about this show, GO. You will not regret it.

I kind of feared the new lineup and new material would provide a less than thrilling night out but boy was I wrong. This is a very tight band and I was captivated by every song, including the many new ones I didn't know, because of the power and skill of the playing and the quality of the compositions. This was a guitar feast with two fabulous soloists taking it in turns to dazzle us. Especially in the second half of the show it was a ferocious sonic assault; classy, masterful, above all really heavy. For the nostalgic they played plenty of hits too. I loved it. Pumpkins still rule!

The Paramount Theater in Seattle seems to be a perfectly appropriate venue for the Smashing Pumpkins. The sound was very well managed - loud enough to rock but not so loud that it was just ringing.

I especially liked Billy's cover of Space Oddity but the rendition of Disarm with the Organ was odd to me, but then I love playing that tune on my acoustic guitar so I guess I am biased.

The only thing I didn't like was that leg room for the seats. It felt very cramped and tight. But is was easy to forget about that when listening to the band.

Best concert ever! The band was on fire, Corgan and Iha are a surprisingly good comic duo, the setlist was incredible with songs spanning all their career and surprise numbers like a Rolling Stones cover. The stage was magic, with giant puppets and light shows that really made the evening seem like something out of a dream.

The location is small and collected and the sound was PERFECT, contributing to the atmosphere: it seemed like an evening with friends, the gods descending between men to share stories and emotions.

Beyond good.

Jimmy Chamberlain – Smashing Pumpkins ‘The Band Is At It’s Absolute Top Form Right Now’

Posted on April 11, 2023 by duanejames

Smashing Pumpkins 2023

The Smashing Pumpkins are no strangers to Australia. Having toured here in various iterations over the last 29 years, this iconic four-piece from Chicago have been an ever-evolving spectacle, leaving fans guessing as to what to expect at their next live appearance. With lineup changes, experimentation with sound and varying scales in the size of musical projects, from their 4-track, 1991 EP Lull , to their latest 3-part, 33-track rock opera ATUM, The Smashing Pumpkins can never be accused of having put on the same show twice.

The evolution continues in the form of The World Is A Vampire , their first-ever music and culture festival. On the eve of their Aussie leg of the tour, Wall Of Sound’s resident bogan Duane James got Zooming with legendary drummer Jimmy Chamberlain to discuss their new rock opera  ATUM , getting into mischief with the Ramones , car racing and Billy Corgan’s ridiculous ability to churn out content.

But the lads are bringing The World Is A Vampire to Australia this weekend, only a month after debuting it in Mexico. How has the experience been so far?

“It was incredible. Yeah, everything about it was really, really great. We played. Interpol played. We had the band Turnstile play. Peter Hook and the Light played. It was fantastic. I mean, we had the wrestling. Billy (Corgan) owns NWA (National Wrestling Alliance) . So we had the NWA versus Lucha Libre wrestling, which was super fantastic. Mexico, funnily enough, I think is one of our biggest markets ever. So the people down there are just bonkers for the Pumpkins. So it’s like playing to some of the greatest fans. I mean, they’re just really so grateful and so appreciative of it being down there. Even in spite of the language barrier, everybody’s got a story, right. There’s like, I first heard the pumpkins here.”

It’s pretty cool and it’s kind of like Australia, right?

“We’ve been down from time to time, but it’s been so long since we’ve been down there. But I’ve got such great memories of playing your neck of the woods. Whether it’s the Big Day Out , you know, that type of stuff. I mean, early on those festivals where we would go to Perth and play with the Ramones . I remember seeing the Ramones in Perth, it was about 115 degrees out and they’re playing three in the afternoon with leather jackets are sweating like crazy. It was amazing. I got in a lot of trouble that year…”

“I got thrown out of a couple of hotels on that tour because of CJ Ramone who was a bit of a wild man. He threw a fish at me from across the restaurant and got to be pretty greasy for a while but yeah, it was all in good fun.”

So after thirty plus years of touring, including countless spots on other festivals, what was it that instigated Smashing Pumpkins wanting to put on their own festival?

“We just thought it was time. We had been kind of kicking around the idea for a while and then one of the Mexican promoters got wind of it and then offered to back it up, and it was really about how much of our own dry powder do we want to put behind it, or will anybody else spring to support it, right? And the answer was Yes. So we got in with some great promoters, great people. Live Nation is interested in doing it and we just felt like there’s a need for a festival that’s kind of more rooted in what the early festivals were. Like Lollapalooza.

When we did Lollapalooza in 1993, we did 42 Lollapaloozas across the country. It was like a moving circus, and there was something really cool about that. We were like, well, we can take the kind of best components of that, inject our own kind of identity into it, curate something that’ll be very cool from a musical standpoint, but also bring in peripheral components.

Like Billy’s a big wrestling guy, he owns the NWA. I’m a racecar driver. So next year, we’re talking about doing an exhibition race. Because the festival in Mexico is at the Mexican Formula One track. So maybe doing an exhibition race the day before the festival. Just kind of bringing in peripheral interests in the band in and around the festival so people can kind of get more of a holistic vibe, kind of where the music comes from. Because racing is a big part of my life. Wrestling is a big part of Billy’s life, and it certainly injects itself into the music.”

A festival of that scale could definitely be held in Australia. Given our history of music events in NSW alone being held at locations that have held car races like Homebush, Eastern Creek and Mount Panorama, it’s something that could definitely be on the cards. But you mentioned the music festival Lollapalooza , and synonymous with that brand is Jane’s Addiction who as it turns out, is coming to Australia with you on this tour.

“Jane’s Addiction is like family to us. My third gig with the Pumpkins was opening up for Jane’s Addiction. So I’ve known those guys since 1988. Almost as long as we’ve all been bands, we’ve been friends. So you know, Perry and I are still friends. I’m still friends with Perk (Stephen Perkins) and Dave (Navarro), and Eric (Avery). I went to Lollapalooza with Perry and sat in with Jane’s Addiction last time they were here.

On the way over Perry was going, ‘Man, we’ve got to find a way to play together. It’s been too long, let’s figure it out’. So we kind of made a deal that we would figure it out, and then we did. We just did a 33 city arena tour in the states where Janes opened. It just went really, really well. So when it came down to coming down to Australia, we were like, we got to bring Janes with us, because it was such a great package, you guys need to see the combo.

The Pumpkins, Janes Addiction, and then allowing those other younger bands to do their thing. That’s what it’s all about, right? It’s partially our way of giving back and creating an architecture where the youthful movements of rock can come in and get a leg up and play to a different audience. We can play to a younger audience, and it all kind of gels together.”

Absolutely, and what a collection of young artists. With Amyl and The Sniffers, Redhook and Rattlesnake amongst others, what hand did the band have in curating this lineup.

Yeah, with Turnstile as the kind of template, because that’s what we picked for the first one, we wanted to get bands that were kind of in the same lane. We leaned on the promoter, obviously, to feed us the bands. But yeah, those were ultimately the bands we landed on. So we feel like it’s going to be a fucking great day of rock’n’roll.

We heard the news that Dave Navarro has been crook with long term Covid for a while and won’t be able to tour in Australia with Janes Addiction. Do you have any news on how his health is at the moment?

Yeah, I haven’t really heard. I haven’t talked to him in a while, and I don’t really get much information from anybody. Obviously I miss him. He’s a good friend of mine. But I gotta say that on this last tour, they had Troy (Van Leeuwen) from Queens of the Stone Age playing guitar, and Josh Klinghoffer (ex- Red Hot Chili Peppers ) and it was fucking blistering. I mean, it was really like wow.

Josh Klinghoffer and Troy together were just a Juggernaut and really brought another layer to Jane’s that just made it sound incredible. I mean, those guys are such great musicians. Obviously Dave is very iconic and stands on his own but, and, it wasn’t the same without him. But it was definitely different in a way that was really cool.

Speaking of something that’s different, yet really cool, you guys are bringing Corgan’s wrestling crew, National Wrestling Alliance with you for the tour. I’m a lifelong Wrestling fan. How has it translated to the rock n roll festival environment?

“It’s insane, I mean it’s so big in Mexico, you know, Lucha Libre. It’s like a religion down there. If you do that stuff in America, like 30% of the crowds kind of into it. In Mexico. It was like Jesus landed and it was crazy. It was crazy that people knew every wrestler. They were so into it. I like wrestling but I’m not THAT into it.”

Not like Billy Corgan where you’d own your own company. Plus Lucha Libre are next level in just how much they throw themselves around. I’ve seen them almost destroy themselves to entertain people. Anyways, while you’re touring Australia, the third part of your rock opera ATUM (pronounced Ah-toom) is to be released. Whose idea was it to produce this 33 song epic sequel to 1995’s Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness plus 2000’s Machina / The Machines Of God and have you got Covid to thank for being able to physically get it recorded?

Well I certainly wouldn’t come up with a 33 song record. I mean Corgan writes 33 songs in an hour. For him, it’s like falling off a log, you know.

But he had, I could be mistaken, I don’t think I am, but he had the story of the play first. So he actually read it to me over a zoom call during COVID. He read me the entire story, and then he wrote the music to it. He sent me the music. I listened to it… I went to his studio, we worked on the songs, we came up with some drum parts that we thought were kind of close to the mark. He kept the drum grooves looped them and created some arrangements, sent me the 33 songs kind of quasi arranged and just threw them in my lap and said, okay, make drum parts for all the songs.

So I had like two months of working on these 33 songs and nothing else. I was telling somebody else. It’s like, taking on a project like that. It’s like going into a spaceship, right? You’re in a dream sequence for two and a half years. And yeah, COVID. This could be the only time that we have two years to make this kind of ambitious endeavour. So we thought if we’re ever going to do anything like this, now’s the time to do it. But it certainly wasn’t my idea to do it. I’m like, can’t you tell the story in like three songs? Haha!”

Listening to it, it sounded very much to me like a backing track to 80’s science fiction, almost like the soundtrack to David Lynch’s Dune.

It’s a very dystopian kind of story, very much like Dune. There’s Joseph Campbell. The hero, the myth. Very cool. I mean Corgan, he’s got a ridiculously large brain and he uses it like a weapon. Right? He’s always creating. I just try to keep up with him. I just I figured that if he’s gonna let me drum on his stuff, I’m cool.

You guys have been going for 35 years now…

Schyeah I know” (smiles, then frowns, shakes his head -ha)

The last time you guys were here was 2015, and in that time you’ve essentially released five albums worth of material. What can the punters hope to expect from the Pumpkins on this tour?

“A massive rock show [laughs] I mean that’s what it is. We’re gonna throw down, man, in the best possible way. We’re gonna   play Silverfuck. We’re gonna go for it. We’re not about resting on anything. We’re moving forward man, we’re like a juggernaut. We’re playing things better, faster, meaner, slower than we ever have. You’ll see, the band is at its absolute top form right now. It’s so fun to play every night.

Well kids, this one promises to be a belter, and with a lineup of this calibre, it’ll be one for the ages. I’ll see you all in the pit and ringside at the wrestling. Look out for this midlife crisis living bogan booing the bad guy wrestlers, counting out the 1…2…3 then screaming “ TODAYYY IS THE GREATEST…DAY I’VE EVER KNOWN !!!!”

Smashing Pumpkins at The World is a Vampire festival in Sydney

The World is a Vampire live in Sydney: great performances save Smashing Pumpkins’ music-meets-wrestling experiment

Hordern Pavilion, Sydney, April 18: the wrestling falls flat at this nominal festival, though the music certainly doesn’t

W hen the Smashing Pumpkins last played the Hordern Pavilion in Sydney in 2008, they were still finding their footing after reuniting a couple years prior. Only half their original line-up were present – Billy Corgan and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin – and their comeback album ‘Zeitgeist’ was met with mixed reviews.

Things are different on their sold-out return to the Australian city. Original guitarist James Iha has rejoined. They’ve released roughly as many albums since their 2006 reformation as they did during their first run, most recently issuing two-thirds of their three-part ‘Atum’ project. They are a band who have survived simply by surviving – by pushing forward.

This evening (April 18) is also billed as a festival, with fellow alt-rock veterans Jane’s Addiction , Melbourne punk exports Amyl and the Sniffers and local prog septet Battlesnake. Intriguingly, it also features wrestling matches between Pro Wrestling Australia and Corgan’s own National Wrestling Alliance.

Battlesnake at The World is a Vampire festival in Sydney

Battlesnake bring their theatrical, gleefully sacrilegious show to a smattering of punters. 4:30pm on a weekday is a tough draw, which is a shame. They’re extremely fun. Amyl & the Sniffers are next, ripping through bangers like ‘Security’ , ‘Guided by Angels’ , and ‘Hertz’ with a fierce, relentless energy. Amy Taylor remains one of the country’s most exciting frontpeople; the rest of the band are dynamic.

Maybe it’s the Hordern’s cavernous nature, but much of the audience are weirdly passive throughout. It’s an oddity given the frenzied pits the Sniffers inspire at their own shows, but it doesn’t really feel like their fault. Corgan later predicts that in 20 years, Amyl will be “the biggest band in the world”, and he’s probably right.

Wrestling takes place between sets in a ring just off to the side of the stage. The shtick is Aussie wrestlers fighting overseas combatants, and while the crowd indulges in some “Aussie, Aussie, Aussie” chants, the enthusiasm is really not there.

In the right environment, wrestling can feel like the most vital thing in the world. This is not that environment. Guitars and drums are being soundchecked onstage and any potential gravitas sucked out of the room, leaving an awkward vibe-killer. Something billed as a drawcard feels like an afterthought. Perhaps there is a reason why music and wrestling festivals are not commonplace.

Wrestling at The World is a Vampire festival in Sydney

This contributes to an altogether disconnected, rushed energy at The World is a Vampire. Starting on a weekday afternoon, with four bands, its Sydney leg is only really just a ‘festival’, and the clunky flow never really gets quite right. (The World is a Vampire’s debut fest in Mexico City last month, with 12 bands in total, feels more worthy of the title.)

Jane’s Addiction bring us back. It’s the band’s first Sydney show in over a decade, and they deliver a stellar set drawing largely on classic albums ‘Nothing’s Shocking’ and ‘Ritual de lo Habitual’, backed by a trio of impressively acrobatic, scantily clad dancers.

It’s kind of wild how good a frontman Perry Farrell is, darting from one side of the stage to the other, belting out vocals with aplomb, charismatic as hell throughout. Guitarist Dave Navarro is absent, still recovering from the effects of long COVID, and in his place is another ex- Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist: Josh Klinghoffer. He’s a more than suitable replacement, playing Navarro’s blistering, breakneck riffs with precision.

While Navarro is not present, original bassist Eric Avery is back! When Avery last toured Australia with Jane’s Addiction in 2010, he left the band shortly afterwards, only rejoining last year. Let’s hope this tour doesn’t prompt the same inclination, because, combined with drummer Stephen Perkins, the rhythm section is muscular and propulsive. Together, the band are a force.

The Smashing Pumpkins emerge, opening with riffy ‘Atum’ cut ‘Empires’. They follow it up with two of their biggest hits: the brilliant one-two punch of ‘Bullet with Butterfly Wings’ and ‘Today’ waking up a sleepy Tuesday night crowd and emphasising the Pumpkins as a collision of past and present.

In addition to Corgan, Iha and Chamberlin, Smashing Pumpkins’ current incarnation includes longtime guitarist Jeff Schroeder, plus touring bassist Jack Bates and vocalist Katie Coles. They sound fantastic playing off each other, and Iha’s sorely missed guitar-playing is a joy to witness. He and Corgan banter back and forth throughout with a refreshing looseness.

Older gems feel revitalised. ‘1979’ – released nearly three decades prior – brings the crowd to full life. Chamberlain’s powerhouse drumming on ‘Ava Adore’, a song he notably was not a part of, elevates it to another level. ‘Eye’, written for David Lynch’s Lost Highway , remains one of the band’s best songs, and a gorgeous, sparse rendition of ‘Tonight, Tonight’ is led in by an acoustic cover of The Church’s ‘Under the Milky Way’, sung by Iha.

The set is not without flaws. A heavy industrial cover of Talking Heads ’ ‘Once in a Lifetime’ becomes laborious. The set feels a little incoherent, and new material often doesn’t quite have the spark it really should. During penultimate song ‘Beguiled’, two of the wrestlers from earlier come out for a weird onstage confrontation, pulling it away from the moment it could be.

Smashing Pumpkins at The World is a Vampire festival in Sydney

For their final song, the band close with an excellent, jammy ‘Silverfuck’ – reminding everyone Smashing Pumpkins are a guitar band. Corgan, Iha and Schroeder shred like wizards, and even at its most indulgent, it’s genuinely thrilling.

The Smashing Pumpkins in 2023 are very good. Though the set teeters on the edge of brilliance and never quite achieves it, it’s indisputable that the band are responsible for many of the ’90s’ best rock songs, and this is as good as you’re going to hear them.

During Jane’s Addiction’s set, Farrell tells the crowd life is “all about taking chances and trying new things”. Corgan’s music-meets-wrestling experiment isn’t a complete success, but it’s worth the price of admission for the strong line-up, and a reminder that Smashing Pumpkins are still one of the all-time great rock bands.

In 2018, they embarked on one of their most successful tours ever, the Shiny and Oh So Bright Tour, followed by SHINY AND OH SO BRIGHT, VOL. 1 / LP: NO PAST. NO FUTURE. NO SUN. Meanwhile, 2020 saw the release of the band’s eleventh full-length and latest double album, CYR. As prolific as ever, The Smashing Pumpkins are currently working on new music. More details to come.

About Interpol

Billy Corgan loves an old-fashioned American story

When Billy Corgan first floated the idea that the new Smashing Pumpkins album would take the form of a 33-song rock opera, his camp was skeptical.

“Everybody in my world at that time, some of whom have been fired, rolled their eyes and said, ‘Not in 2023; you’re insane,’” he recently recalled. “And of course, I pointed out the obvious, which is, I made one of the biggest albums of all time, which was 28 songs.”

“Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness,” the diamond-certified double LP from 1995 in question, was one of many ambitious projects Corgan has undertaken across the band’s 35-year history. “Atum,” released in three parts starting last November, is a sweeping sci-fi narrative that Corgan has called a sequel to both “Mellon Collie” and the 2000 concept album “Machina/The Machines of God.” Against the backdrop of vintage-style Pumpkins alt-rock and synth-driven art pop, it tells the story of Shiny, a rock star who has spent two decades in exile in outer space, and an admirer who attempts to save him from a suicidal fate.

A full performance of “Atum,” which Corgan envisions as an evening-length theatrical happening, is still only a hypothetical, but select songs can be heard live on Thursday, when Smashing Pumpkins’ “The World is a Vampire Tour” arrives at the North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre in Chula Vista.

Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins performs at the Metro on Sept. 20, 2022, in Chicago.

The tour will also feature pro-wrestling matches presented by the Corgan-owned National Wrestling Alliance. It’s a chance for the singer-songwriter — who’s also a co-owner of a teahouse and plant-based eatery in his home of Highland Park, Illinois, and works with the local nonprofit animal shelter PAWS Chicago — to flaunt his diverse interests.

“I think the difference between, let’s call it the current culture and the culture of 30 years ago, is, when you rose to a certain prominence, you had to explain who and why and what you were,” he said. “And that’s what I like about this culture: It’s more about having shared experience and respecting — whether it’s somebody’s pronouns, or whatever — ‘Hey, this is kind of how I want to go through life,’” he said. “‘And if you can respect that, we can have fun.’”

Corgan discussed finding comfort in daily routine and relics of former eras in a phone interview from his home in the spring. These are edited excerpts from the conversation.

1. Antique Malls

What I love about antique malls is, you still get a sense of regional America. But you also get a sense of the America that was. It’s a really beautiful back window into the American psyche. I bought a Lillian Gish book once, and I got it home and realized it was autographed. Or you find these weird, mass-produced art nouveau statues that would have been sold at the dime store. My house is populated with this bric-a-brac.

2. Ruby Keeler

If you’ve ever watched the movie “42nd Street,” Ruby’s the star of the movie, and it’s literally her story. She was a buck-and-wing dancer in New York. She gained prominence as a teen dancer; was in some big, Ziegfeld-type shows; went to Hollywood; and became a huge movie star. And within about 10 years, she was pretty much out of the movie business, went on to have a family, and was at one point famously married to Al Jolson. It’s an amazing, only-in-America story. I’m obsessed with Ruby Keeler. She’s, like, the perfect ingénue.

3. John Fogerty

Another incredible American success story. At one point, Creedence Clearwater Revival was bigger than the Beatles. And then, famously, through bad contracts, John Fogerty lost all of his songs. My understanding is, in the ’70s when he would play live, he wouldn’t play the songs because he didn’t own them anymore. And just recently, he got his catalog back after 50-something years. I emailed him and his wife, Julie, just to say, “Man, this is so amazing,” and got a nice response back. You want to talk about one of those, like, Jimmy Stewart movies? Guy makes good, loses it all, and at the end of the day gets it all back.

4. PAWS Chicago

They’re a no-kill shelter, and they really are committed to making sure that every pet finds a home. I think I’ve got about four pets from PAWS in my home at the moment. The most recent one is a French bulldog, Colette, whose mother was found lying in an alley, dying, trying to give birth. Out of that beautiful story, we have a little dog peeing in the corner everywhere.

5. ’60s Gold on SiriusXM

They present radio the old-fashioned way. They have the charismatic DJ come on and talk between the songs: Pat St. John is one of them, “Shotgun Tom” Kelly. I listen to it pretty much every day, and just like how radio used to be, it’s not only the great music; it’s the rapport that they’ve established with their audience. They do a great job of finding a balance between the classics and the deep cuts. You find songs all the time you didn’t know existed.

6. Graceland

I’d never been to Graceland. I was friends with Lisa Marie Presley, and at one point, I was in Memphis, and I was all set to go. She got me the whole VIP hookup, like I could go in the rooms where nobody could go. And then I called her back and said, “No, I changed my mind … ”. And she said, “You don’t want to go? Are you crazy?!” And I said, “I want to go with you.” When she passed away, I was invited to the funeral — I performed at the public part of the ceremony — and I went to Graceland for the first time. It was this weird sentimental thing of, well, she got me to Graceland eventually, but it was sadly upon her death.

7. Vintage Synthesizers

One of my total nerd things is, I have this crazy vintage synth collection. Maybe it’s because I grew up in the ’70s. There’s the proto-futurism of the ’30s, like the City of Tomorrow. And then there’s this different futurism that came with Kubrick and Tarkovsky in the ’60s and ’70s — you know, “We’re all gonna live in this sexless world and only listen to synthesized music” — and we’re almost there. I have an EMS Synthi 100. There were only 33 made, so there’s only a few left in the world. That’s like the Rosebud of synth collecting. In fact, there’s a lot of vintage synth stuff on the “Atum” album, much to the dismay of my guitar-loving fan base.

8. American Art Deco

It’s this proto-futurism that went on in the ’20s and ’30s where they were designing, like, “This is the world to come.” It was imbued with the idea that the world of tomorrow will have no disease, and there will be no war, and we’ll all live in these glittering, shining buildings. Part of what makes that architecture really interesting is, they had no idea what was coming, including World War II. So it’s like this last blast of innocence before the modern world we’ve been living in for the past 80 years kind of put its foot on everybody.

9. Madame ZuZu’s Chocolate Pu-erh Tea

The guy we work with, Rod Markus, is a total genius; he’s like a tea sommelier. He travels the world and puts these crazy things together. By putting chocolate in pu-erh — which is an aged and fermented ancient Chinese style of making tea — it takes some of the bitterness out of it. So it’s one of those weird, sweet-sour type things. I literally drink it every day with my lunch.

10. Highland Park, Illinois

I’ve lived here for 20 years. I’m in the community. This is where my teahouse is; this is where my children were born. So I’ve put down serious roots here. This is the fancy part of town up on the lake. But then last July 4 (2022), we had this mass shooting here where the guy shot into a parade. It’s just a horrible disaster. So I live in this idyllic, bucolic community that’s still trying to put the pieces together after an all-too-frequent mass shooting in America. It’s way more haunting than you can imagine.

History will be made as the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA), owned by Smashing Pumpkins front man  Billy Corgan , will be sending some of its biggest stars and Champions to compete at most of the festival locations. Originally founded in 1948, the NWA has been a cornerstone of professional wrestling on a global scale for generations as a promotion and a governing body. Under Corgan’s leadership, the NWA is reaching new heights in the sport and is growing an international fan base. Featured talents include NWA Women’s World Champion Kamille, NWA World Tag Team Champions Bestia 666 & Mecha Wolf, NWA World Junior Heavyweight Champion Kerry Morton, Trevor Murdoch, Natalia Markova, Chris Adonis, Thom Latimer, EC3, Thrillbilly Silas Mason, Odinson, Mercurio, Kenzie Paige, Missa Kate, and many more. Be a part of the action as NWA titles and reputations will be on the line in this unique concert environment unlike any other.  https://www.nationalwrestlingalliance.com
