Steve Hackett announces Foxtrot at Fifty North American tour

Former Genesis man Steve Hackett will undertake a lengthy North American tour to mark the 50th anniversary of the band's classic Foxtrot album

Former Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett has announced a US tour to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the band's 1972 album Foxtrot . The run of 29 Foxtrot at Fifty shows will kick off on October 3 at Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier in Montreal, QC, and wrap up six weeks later at the Lobero Theatre in Santa Barbara, CA, on November 18.

“I’m thrilled to be bringing my ‘Genesis Revisited: Foxtrot at Fifty + Hackett Highlights’ tour to the USA and Canada in the autumn," says Hackett, "and very much look forward to seeing you all then!”

Hackett played a run of 25 UK Foxtrot at Fifty dates in September and October 2022. In announcing those shows, he said, "We were a young, struggling band at that time. By the time we were doing Foxtrot the band was becoming more ambitious.

" Foxtrot is a must for fans of the early Genesis work. Fifty years ago? It doesn’t feel like those ideas are fifty years old because it was-genre defining, rather than following trends. It still sounds current, now.”

The North American shows are in addition to an extensive run of previously-announced European Foxtrot At 50 dates, which kick off on April 19 at La Seine Musicale in Paris, France. Full dates below - tickets are on sale now .

Steve Hackett Bringing Genesis’ ‘Foxtrot’ Tour to North America

Former Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett announced North American tour dates for his Foxtrot at Fifty show.

He’ll perform 29 concerts, kicking off in Montreal on Oct. 3 and winding up in Los Angeles on Nov. 18. Along with a complete performance of Foxtrot , the shows will also feature a selection of “Hackett highlights.”

“ Foxtrot was a hybrid of a lot of different styles,” the guitarist recently told Ramzine of the 1972 album, the first Genesis LP to make the Top 20. “At the time, Genesis were a band pulling in a lot of different directions as we all had so many different influences. Tony Banks was into Vaughan Williams, Phil [Collins] was interested in big bands, [Peter] Gabriel was into soul music, [Mike] Rutherford was into folk and Led Zeppelin and I was into blues and baroque music.”

He added that “We were a young struggling band without much in the way of a clear sense of direction, but knowing we wanted to do something exceptional. And I think we pulled it off. Foxtrot was a terrific achievement for Genesis at the time. There’s not one weak track on the album, they all have their strong points and I’m looking forward to performing the whole album live.”

As advertised, the show will feature the 1972 GENESIS album "Foxtrot" performed in full, plus additional fan favorites. Long considered one of the classic progressive rock releases, "Foxtrot" spawned such all-time great GENESIS tracks as "Watcher Of The Skies" and the over-20-minute-long epic "Supper's Ready" .

Hackett joined GENESIS at the beginning of 1971 and gained an international reputation as the guitarist in the band's classic lineup alongside Peter Gabriel , Tony Banks , Mike Rutherford and Phil Collins . Hackett 's intricate guitar work was a key element of GENESIS 's albums from "Nursery Cryme" (1971) to "Wind And Wuthering" (1977) including the classic "Selling England By The Pound" .

After leaving GENESIS at the end of 1977, Hackett 's solo career, which now spans more than 30 albums, has demonstrated his extraordinary versatility with both electric and acoustic guitar. Hackett is renowned as both an immensely talented and innovative rock musician and a virtuoso classical guitarist and composer and this was recognized in 2010 when he was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame . He has also worked alongside Steve Howe of YES in the supergroup GTR .

Hackett 's compositions take influences from many genres, including jazz, classical and blues. For his later studio works "The Night Siren" (2017) and "At The Edge Of Light" (2019), Hackett has explored the influences of world music. Recent tours have seen Hackett celebrate his time with GENESIS including a spectacular 2018 tour in which he realized a long-held ambition to perform the works of GENESIS live with his band and an orchestra.

The lockdown enforced by the 2020 global pandemic has proven to be a particularly creative period for Hackett . He began by releasing "Selling England By The Pound & Spectral Mornings: Live At Hammersmith" , a live recording of 2019's hugely successful tour celebrating that GENESIS classic together with the 40th anniversary of one of his most-loved solo albums. Lockdown also gave Hackett the opportunity to write and record two new studio albums, the U.K. classical chart hit "Under A Mediterranean Sky" and "Surrender Of Silence" .

Steve Hackett – Foxtrot at Fifty + Hackett Highlights: Live in Brighton (Album Review)

Review of the new Steve Hackett live set ‘Foxtrot at Fifty + Hackett Highlights: Live in Brighton’

By Nick Tate

You might think Steve Hackett’s Genesis Revisited juggernaut has run its course, after more than a decade of reprising the band’s 1970s heyday. But you’d be wrong. Hackett’s latest live retrospective album, “Foxtrot at 50 + Hackett Highlights: Live in Brighton,” confirms there is much yet the former Genesis guitarist can bring to this satisfying project.

Like the prior eight live Genesis Revisited releases, “Foxtrot at 50” transcends nostalgia and sentimentality. It captures Hackett and his talented band of musicians delivering a crackling-good performance that updates 1972’s classic “Foxtrot” album — the band’s fourth and the first to chart in the U.K. (No. 12). It also showcases a handful of well-chosen solo works the multitalented guitarist/composer/bandleader has produced since leaving the band in 1977.

As usual, these performances are the next best thing to seeing Genesis live back in the day. But what’s most striking is the degree to which each band member brings a new sheen and shine to these timeless prog masterworks. The combined result takes these well-known pieces in surprising new directions, while remaining loyal to the originals. Perhaps more than any other Genesis Revisited release, this double-disc set demonstrates how well Hackett’s individual works hold up against the older Genesis material. As if to emphasize the point, this rich collection ends with an inspired mashup of the jazzy Genesis instrumental “Los Endos” and Hackett’s own “Slogan’s” from his 1980 “Defector” solo album — perfectly marrying the two halves of this live release. The upshot: This is a satisfying 50-year overview of one of prog’s most prolific and engaging elder statesmen that honors his past yet also confirms he is still breaking new ground at age 73.

The first half of album showcases a best-of collection of Hackett’s solo works, dating to his 1975 debut, “Voyage of the Acolyte,” recorded while he was still in Genesis and the same year Peter Gabriel departed the band. This set includes three tracks from that brilliant debut —the wildly eclectic prog-fusion instrumental “Ace of Wands,” the haunting “A Tower Struck Down” and “Shadow of the Heirophant,” featuring vocalist Amanda Lehman (an epic suite initially proposed to, but rejected by, his Genesis bandmates for inclusion on 1976’s “Trick of the Tail”). Hearing these tracks side-by-side with the “Foxtrot” material, a strong argument can be made that “Acolyte” just might be the best Genesis album that Genesis never made.

The first set also features more recent material, including “The Devi’s Cathedral,” a gothic story-song from his 2021 album “Surrender of Silence” that plays like a soundtrack from a Wes Craven horror film. Roger King’s churchy organ backdrop and Hackett’s ghosty fretwork provide the perfect backdrop for Nad Sylvan’s chilling baritone vocal. In addition, the setlist includes the jazzy title track from Hackett’s third solo album, 1979’s “Spectral Mornings,” the sprightly “Every Day” (from the same record) and the driving “Camino Royale” from 1982’s “Highly Strung.”

The second half of the release features Hackett and Friends’ replication of the groundbreaking “Foxtrot.” There’s no point in analyzing why this was the transitional album that brought Genesis international acclaim. It’s probably enough to simply say that the music here stands on its own merits and still manages to sound fresh and original after all these years. But it’s worth noting that classic tracks like “Watcher of the Skies,” “Get ‘Em Out by Friday” and the 23-minute seven-part suite “Supper’s Ready” can still raise gooseflesh in these new live versions.

A close listen reveals new textures and liberties the band takes that gives these tightly orchestrated pieces a new freshness. In particular, Sylvan stands out, channeling both Peter Gabriel’s quirky ancient-mariner croon and Phil Collins’ elfin tenor, yet somehow bringing something uniquely his own to his vocal delivery. His dramatic interpretation of Gabriel’s shape-shifting vocals on “Supper’s Ready” approaches Broadway-like theatricality and the result is nothing short of remarkable; it’s a true tour-de-force. Roger King also shines on keyboards throughout. He masterfully reworks Tony Banks’ symphonic intro to “Watcher of the Skies” (matching the original, which was performed on a mellotron famously bought from King Crimson). His classical-piano turns on “Time Table” (this being the first Genesis Revisited take on this track) and the rarely performed “Can-Utility and the Coastliners” bring a new luster to these high-water marks in the early Genesis cannon. And noteworthy performances are delivered by reedman Rob Townsend — whose sax and flute lines add new depth and tonal color to the proceedings — and the thunderous rhythm section of bassist Jonas Reingold and drummer Craig Blundell. (Reingold even gets his own solo bass spot and Blundell unleashes wildly unhinged melodic drum fills in the closing coda of “Hierophant” and during the “Apocalypse 9/8” interlude of “Supper’s Ready.”

Throughout, of course, Hackett’s searing and emotive fretwork cut like a foghorn through the darkly turbulent storm of sound that defined “Foxtrot” and some his best post-Genesis efforts, both anchoring and pushing the band to new heights. Highpoints include his resplendent Bach-like acoustic etude, “Horizons,” a staple of his live shows and fan favorite, and the jawdropping electric-guitar solo he unleashes on the classical-prog-rock “Firth of Fifth.” Worth noting: If you’re a Genesis fan who feels you just don’t need to hear yet another version of “Supper’s Ready,” you should reconsider — if only to take in the wildly unhinged solo Hackett unspools at the triumphal conclusion of this transcendent epic: This new version is a keeper and worth your time.

For audiophiles, the sound production throughout is crystalline, featuring gem-like clarity. Mixed by Chris Lord-Alge and mastered by Ted Jensen, it is available in various formats, including a four-LP edition and two-CD/Blu-ray and two-CD/two-DVD sets, all loaded with bonus extras and 5.1 surround sound mixes.

With “Foxtrot at 50,” Hackett has reached a bit of a milestone — producing live Genesis Revisited recordings of half of the eight albums he originally recorded with the band from 1971 to 1977. Which begs the question: Might Hackett tackle next the one album many fans and critics regard as Genesis’s finest hour (plus 34 minutes) — 1974’s “The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway,” which has not received the full start-to-finish Genesis Revisited treatment? What say ye, Mr. Hackett?

Guitarist Steve Hackett joined Genesis in 1971, making his band debut on the Nursery Cryme album which enjoyed a greater commercial success in Europe than the UK. After extensive touring, the band were encouraged, by audience reactions, to further experiment with ever longer compositions and develop their ability to incorporate strong narratives. Hold onto your seats, music lovers! The guitar virtuoso extraordinaire, Steve Hackett , is gearing up to deliver a monumental performance at the legendary Kalamazoo State Theatre on Saturday, March 23, 2024 . Brace yourselves for an unforgettable night as Hackett takes us on a time-traveling journey through the iconic Genesis Revisited – Foxtrot at Fifty + Hackett Highlights tour, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the legendary Genesis album Foxtrot .

Hot on the heels of his immensely successful solo tour, Steve Hackett’s Genesis Revisited – Foxtrot at Fifty + Hackett Highlights tour in 2022 became a resounding hit. This tour celebrates the timeless influence of Foxtrot , the album that played a pivotal role in establishing Genesis as a major force in British rock back in 1972.

Steve Hackett joined Genesis in 1971 and made his band debut on the Nursery Cryme album, which gained greater commercial success in Europe than in the UK. The band’s extensive touring and enthusiastic audience reactions encouraged them to push the boundaries of music, experimenting with longer compositions and narrative-driven performances. This artistic evolution allowed frontman Peter Gabriel to incorporate theatrical elements into their shows, further elevating the band’s profile.

Starting in 2023, Steve Hackett is set to bring Foxtrot at Fifty to North America, following the massive success of his 2022 UK tour. Speaking about the upcoming tour, Steve Hackett said, “I think Foxtrot was a terrific achievement for Genesis at that time. I think there is not one weak track on the album; they all have their strong points, and I’m really looking forward to doing the whole album live.”

Prepare to be transported back to the golden era of progressive rock as Steve Hackett and his talented band deliver a mesmerizing performance featuring the iconic tracks from Foxtrot and other Hackett highlights.

Don’t miss your chance to witness this legendary musician live in action. Secure your tickets now and join us at the Kalamazoo State Theatre on March 23, 2024, for a night of unforgettable music and nostalgia.

Steve Hackett's emergency hospitalization: What it means for his tour and ticketholders

Steve Hackett was supposed to have revisited "Foxtrot," one of several classic albums he made as a member of Genesis, while also showcasing highlights of “The Circus and the Nightwhale,” a solo album he released in February, at a concert on Saturday, April 13, at the historic Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix.

But 10 minutes after the show was supposed to have started, Danny Zelisko, the local promoter, walked onstage to tell the fans the famed guitarist wouldn't be performing after all.

He'd just been taken to the hospital by ambulance due to a last-minute adverse reaction to medication.

Here’s why Steve Hackett's Phoenix concert was canceled and what's next.

Why was Steve Hackett hospitalized in Phoenix?

Hackett shared a photo of himself in a hospital room  on Facebook  Sunday to accompany a post about what happened.

"I’m so sorry for the scare," he wrote. "I’d hoped to power through the Phoenix show but I had a bronchial infection and a last-minute adverse reaction to medication.

"Consequently, the medics took me to hospital. I am now recovering and glad to be feeling okay. I was very sad to miss the show and I will return to play in Phoenix as soon as possible. My thanks to you all for your understanding and support."

The post was signed, "With warmest wishes, Steve."

When will Steve Hackett reschedule Phoenix concert?

"Steve Hackett and the band will return to Phoenix in 2025. We are sorry the show in Phoenix can’t be made up any sooner," Zelisko said on Tuesday, April 16.

"We will send you a notice when we get a new date so that you can have first crack at the tickets for the new show. We are very, very sad and sorry for the trouble caused, which couldn’t be helped due to medical reasons."

What to expect when the Steve Hackett concert is rescheduled

In an exclusive interview with The Arizona Republic , Hackett talked about the tour.

“I’m keeping the museum doors open in the revisited sense of Genesis,” he says, “but also doing new stuff to keep it vital so I don't entirely pension myself off into a glorious past with all those lovely exhibits, beautiful though they are, but they are of a certain time-warp value.”

PHOENIX, Arizona — former lead guitarist for Genesis is recovering after he had an adverse reaction to medication to treat bronchitis, forcing him to cancel a concert moments before it was to begin.

Steve Hackett wrote in a post on Facebook that he had a “last-minute adverse reaction” to the medication before Saturday’s show at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.

“I’m so sorry for the scare,” Hackett writes. “I’d hoped to power through the Phoenix show but I had a bronchial infection and a last-minute adverse reaction to medication. Consequently, the medics took me to hospital.

“I am now recovering and glad to be feeling okay. I was very sad to miss the show and I will return to play in Phoenix as soon as possible. My thanks to you all for your understanding and support.”

A spokesperson tells the Los Angeles Times that Hackett intends to reschedule the Phoenix show.

On Tuesday, Hackett again posted on Facebook saying “Hello Mexico! All clear and hear I come!” He was scheduled to play Wednesday night in Guadalajara, Mexico, and Friday in Mexico City. USA Today reports the tour focuses on “Foxtrot,” an album he recorded with Genesis during the 1970s, and on “The Circus and the Nightwhale,” a solo album he released in February.

Hackett was with Genesis from 1971 to 1977 with vocalist Peter Gabriel, keyboardist Tony Banks, bassist Mike Rutherford and drummer Phil Collins, and played on six studio albums. Hackett left the band in October 1977, saying he “needed autonomy.”
