Sailing on the St Johns River - A hidden treasure
When the St Johns River turns south from downtown Jacksonville it opens up into the perfect sailing location being wide enough to adjust the sail in accordance to the wind direction and narrow enough to provide protection for a smooth sail. It is fabulous!
The shores are lined with manicured estates and ancient trees stretching from San Marco south on the eastern shore and Ortega south on the western shore. The Florida Yacht Club, Timuquana Country Club, Epping Forest, and Bolles School also grace the shores. If you are lucky, it is fun to be close enough to feel the vibration and to and watch the planes take off and land from the Naval Air Station (NAS) just north of Interstate 295 (the Buckman Bridge).
Sunset Cruise on the St Johns River
We recommend leaving the dock about 3 hours before sunset and head south toward the Buckman Bridge. The direction and speed of the wind determine exactly where we go.
As we turn around and head north to ready ourselves for the sunset, it is the perfect time to stretch out on the comfortable bow trampolines as the colors of the sunset flood the sky. As the sun disappears below the horizon the sky fills with pinks, purples, and oranges of the after glow. The sun disappears, but downtown Jacksonville lights of the city now create their own “light show”. You see the city lights as only one can from the water. One hour later you will be back at the dock as the last light of dusk fads from the sky. The perfect four hour excursion!

We originally thought that we were going to see a moon rising and the sunsetting, but instead we had a fantastic show of rainbows and dramatic storm clouds on either side of us. Leslie Jones our calm, cool and collected Captain sailed us right through the one section of the river that was clear as could be while we watched storm systems to our left and right. It was an exciting and magical display of Mother Nature complete with rainbows! Leslie and Ralph are perfect hosts of a pristine and very capable sailing yacht. It was a most perfect place for a celebration I will not forget! Read more Written July 31, 2018

What to do before or after your cruise from jacksonville’s jaxport.
By Janet K. Keeler
Jacksonville is the northernmost cruise port in Florida to board a cruise ship bound for the blue water of the Caribbean. The Jacksonville cruise port, called JaxPort , is the homeport for the Carnival Elation which plies the Atlantic year-round to the eastern Caribbean, namely the Bahamas.
The Elation will be joined by a Norwegian cruise ship late in 2025 which will offer longer Caribbean swings. If there’s one thing that avid cruisers love, it’s choices and JaxPort will soon have more.
There are so many things to do in Jacksonville and cities nearby that adding some fun to the front or back end of a cruise is a breeze. Keep in mind that Jacksonville is Florida’s biggest city in both population and land area so it has big city vibes and laid-back nature experiences.
Sitting just across the southern state line of Georgia where Interstates 95 and 10 meet, Jacksonville is a convenient destination for people traveling by car, plus the Jacksonville International Airport provides access from all over the country.
The 22 miles of beaches are a big draw to Jacksonville. Jacksonville, Neptune, Black Rock and Atlantic beaches are fine places to throw out a blanket and enjoy the rollicking Atlantic Ocean. There are waves upon waves upon waves so body surfing, boogie boarding and surfing (Atlantic Beach is the top spot) are prime attractions. There are places to rent equipment all along the beaches.
The St. Johns River , at 310 miles the longest river in the U.S., is not only a commercial waterway but provides recreation in 12 Florida counties. It’s what’s called a lazy river because it meanders through the Florida landscape contributing to the ecosystem as much as it does to things-to-do. The river cuts through downtown Jacksonville and a ride on the St. Johns River Taxi , especially a sunset cruise, can show you how the city meets nature. Plus, the twinkling lights of the high rises are pretty romantic. Back on land, consider a stop at one of Jacksonville’s 30 craft breweries or collect local brew “passport” stamps on the Jax Ale Trail . If you’re in town during baseball season, buy tickets to see the triple-A Jumbo Shrimp (you know you’re in Florida!) play. While you’re at the park, get a taste of a local collaboration. Intuition Ale Works has an orange-tinged Kolsch called Shrimp Boat. Or if you want beer and not baseball, stop by Intuition Ale or one of the other breweries in town, including Tepeyolot Cerveceria which specializes in Mexican-style beers. Here are five more things to do in Jacksonville, before or after a Bahamian cruise.
The Creative Life in Jax
The Cummer Museum & Gardens is the city’s premier arts destination with the permanent collection of works which includes Winslow Homer, Norman Rockwell and Peter Paul Rubens. The lovely gardens are on the National Historic Register of Historic Places. Nearby and under the Fuller Warren Bridge is the Saturday Riverside Art Market , a must-stop to visit local vendors selling everything from wearable art to photographs to paintings. The Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville at the University of North Florida is a fine place to spend an afternoon viewing art created in the past 100 years. It’s more about the art of science, but the Museum of Science & History has a planetarium and loads of activities for kids. A novel way to check out the city’s public art is a tour with Go Tuk’n on a souped-up, open-air golf cart or a self-guided walking tour of the city’s 60 murals , 50 of them downtown.
A Journey through Natural and Human History
A nationa l preserve and two adjacent state parks east of Jacksonville take travelers back thousands of years to unspoiled coast wetlands and waterways. The Timucuan Ecological & Historic Preserve is a sprawling 46,000-acre compound that represents 6,000 years of ecological history. There is much to do there, and also in adjacent Big Talbot Island and Little Talbot Island state parks, but hikers will especially like the trails that lead through the unique landscape, where hardwood hammocks, coastal dunes and salt marshes intersect. The trails follow the footsteps of the Timucuan Indians, who were nearly wiped out by 1800. The preserve includes Fort Caroline National Memorial dedicated to the short-lived 16th century French colony and the Kingsley Plantation , whose owner bought and sold enslaved people. On the property is the Kingsley house, built in 1797-98, and the remains of 25 slave cabins. Guides do not shy away from the troubled history of the compound.
There’s More than Jaguars in Jacksonville
The Catty Shack Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary rescues and takes care of exotic and endangered big cats. For kids, a visit to the sanctuary just might be the highlight of the cruise vacation. Well that and the endless on-board buffet with flowing chocolate fountain. Visitors can tour the facility and see the resident animals including tigers, lions, cougars and bobcats. Beyond big cats there are bears and coatimundis in residence. Guided 45-minute tours are offered in the afternoons.
From Big City to Old City
Just 35 miles south of Jacksonville is St. Augustine , the oldest city in the U.S. and the place where it’s likely that the first Thanksgiving feast was held. Think shellfish and not stuffing when Spanish settlers cracked shells with members of the Siloy tribe in 1565, more than 50 years before the Plymouth Rock story we learned in school. Things-to-do in St. Augustine includes touring the 16th century Spanish fort Castillo de San Marcos National Monument and walking the pedestrian-only streets of the historic district. Climb the 219 steps to the observation deck of the iconic barber-pole striped 1875 St. Augustine Lighthouse . Or ride the Old Town Trolley and hop off at any of the 22 stops. Old Town also does night-time ghost tours.
Cheers to Local Spirits
Florida has more than 400 craft breweries and that entrepreneurial creativity has ignited the spirits world. There are a growing number of distilleries in Florida , many of them offering guided tours plus tastings. Check out Manifest Distillery in Jacksonville, the first in the state to package its spirits in canned cocktails such as a vodka mule and a classic daiquiri. Short on time? Take the 30-minute tour. Want to hang out longer? Nab a spot on the 2½-hour tour and stop in the Cocktail Room afterward. Award-winning St. Augustine Distillery in St. Augustine is one of the state’s most-well known makers of local spirits. There’s a guided tour of the distillery, housed in a 1907 power and ice plant. You could pair a visit here with other sites in Florida’s oldest city.

The Best San Francisco Sunset Cruise
The best san francisco sunset cruise , by carrie green zinn.
Take it from a local, sailing on a San Francisco sunset cruise is one of the best ways to enjoy the San Francisco Bay.
I had a wonderful time on this cruise and want to thank Adventure Cat for the awesome opportunity!
San Francisco is arguably the most beautiful city in all of California. It sits on the San Francisco Bay and offers breathtaking views that pair with its iconic landmarks, stunning architecture, and seaside charm.
Picture a sunset sail on the San Francisco Bay alongside the lights of the city and inbetween the Bay Bridge and the Golden Gate Bridge.
It’s remarkable!
The San Francisco Bay Catamaran Sunset Cruise with Adventure Cat Sailing Charters is one of the most reputable and popular sunset cruises.
This cruise is on a 55 or 65 foot catamaran that sets sail during the early evening.
The smaller catamaran is full at 36 people and the larger boat seats up to 76 passengers. They cap the number of passengers to provide lots of room for comfort.
You can enjoy the trip from inside a protected part of the catamaran or sit on the outdoor canvas trampoline and get the full effect of the wind in your hair. I chose to stand at the railing because it was much more exciting and felt almost as if I was gliding on top of the water!
The one and a half hour trip will take you by the famous historic prison on Alcatraz Island and then sails underneath the majestic Golden Gate Bridge. The cruise passes by the lovely waterfront of Sausalito, all the while enjoying memorable views of the city and its hills.

What is the best place to watch the sunset in San Francisco?
From the Bay!
Being on the water in the San Francisco Bay as the sun sets over the Pacific Ocean is a perfect way to watch the city skyline being washed in the golden hues at the close of a beautiful day.
Witness up close the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island as well as the city’s skyscrapers.
You’ll see the famous Coit Tower, the Presidio, the legendary Transamerica Building, and San Francisco’s newest landmark, the Salesforce Tower.
A sunset cruise is both romantic and invigorating! If you enjoy being out on the water, you’ll love feeling the wind and rush of the Bay as you cruise alongside the sailboats, birds, and harbor seals, and learn about what makes the San Francisco Bay a sailor’s dream.

Some San Francisco Sunset Cruise Details
~ This San Francisco Sunset Cruise offers one complimentary beverage and a taste of San Francisco with a Ghirardelli chocolate bonus! Additional drinks and snacks are also available for purchase.
~ Another big bonus are the cozy jackets they provide! I thought I would be warm enough, but was really happy to borrow the extra layer.
~ The crew were awesome, friendly, helpful, and fostered a great, low key vibe aboard. There were couples, families, friends, and people of all ages and everyone seemed super happy with the experience.
~ If you’re sailing in early summer, you might be lucky enough to catch some whales migrating! We saw a couple of dolphins for a hot second and flocks and flocks of birds flying so close it felt unreal.
~ I would be remiss if I didn’t point out the fog, which San Francisco is famous for, that can roll in pretty thick in the evening out on the Bay. Especially in August. So, be prepared that you may not see the Golden Gate Bridge until you are right under it! And the city skyline can become a misty hint of a vision in the fog. The benefit of the fog however, is the fresh moist air and the great lighting it offers. This is San Francisco afterall, and it is called Fog City for a reason!
~ If you’re bringing kids along, note that the sunset prices are the same for all ages. If you want a children’s discount, then you may want to consider a daytime cruise.
To board the boat, follow these directions:
Look for Adventure Cat Sailing Charters at Pier 39 Dock J, on the Embarcadero in San Francisco. The Gate J to the dock is next to the sea lion viewing area on the pier. It will be pretty obvious, but ask someone where the sea lions are if you can’t find the dock. They ask that you arrive 30 minutes early for check in and to board the boat so they can set sail on time.
What People Are Saying about the San Francisco Sunset Sail
There are over 900 Five Star reviews of the San Francisco Bay Sunset Catamaran Cruise.
Customers rave about the unforgettable views and the excitement of being out on the Bay. They love seeing the Golden Gate Bridge up close and personal and also talk about all the amazing opportunities for great photos on this tour! The lighting is perfect at that time of day and the scenery is so unique to the Bay Area, it has that “pinch me, is this real” effect!
The reputation of the catamaran staff and customer service is exemplary and is mentioned repeatedly in the comments. They are organized, knowledgeable, helpful and offer both non-alcoholic and alcohol choices as well as snacks while cruising.
The Absolute Best Place to Stay and Dine near the Golden Gate Bridge
Are you looking for a special place to stay with a view of the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco Bay?
Cavallo Point is the luxurious and historic lodging tucked under the Golden Gate Bridge in Sausalito, California. The accommodations are stellar and the views are unbelievable.
Cavallo Point used to be an army post before becoming a National Park. The buildings have been renovated into hotel and conference and wedding venues. There are a ton of beautiful hikes around the property.
The highlight is the Michilin Star restaurant; Murray Hill. You can dine in the restaurant or order to your room and dine on your balcony!
→ Book a stay at Cavallo Point here!
What to wear on a SF sunset cruise?
This is not a formal, luxury cruise! It’s windy out there.
You’ll want warm and comfortable clothing and comfortable shoes. Don’t wear a hat unless it ties under your chin because the wind might sweep it off your head!
You might get sprayed by the Bay waves, so wear something that you don’t mind if it gets a little wet!
Bring layers no matter what the season, because you may start off feeling a warm breeze but will be surprised at how much the temperature drops as the sun goes down on the water.
Fun things to do by the San Francisco Bay
~ Visit the Harbor Seals at Fisherman’s Wharf – After the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, the sea lions started coming to the dock at Pier 39. At first there were about 10 and now as many as 900 show up in the winter. They are the “sea-lebrities” of San Francisco and are fun to watch as they swim and bathe in the sun. You’ll find them at Pier 39’s K-dock.
~ Shop and play at Pier 39 – The multi-level area of Pier 39 is a tourist attraction along the water. You can see puppet shows, ride a carousel, dine, shop, and soak in the views of the Bay.
~ Alcatraz Tours – The 22 acre island, now operated by the National Park Service, used to be the infamous prison. You can take a boat from the pier and tour the island to learn more of the fascinating history surrounding Alcatraz.
→ Get your tickets for Alcatraz Here
~ Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum – If you’ve never been to a wax museum before, now is your chance! Madame Tussaud’s is San Francisco’s famous home of wax celebrities. From presidents to movie stars and your favorite musicians and athletes, this museum has you covered. It’s super fun for a few hours off from the touristy streets of Fisherman’s Wharf.
→ Get your Madame Tussad’s Tickets here!
~ Tour Ghirardelli Square – With rich history dating back to the Gold Rush in 1849, this is now a National Historic Site preserved as one of San Francisco’s most treasured landmarks. While the chocolate is now made in San Leandro, across the Bay, the square features the old factory and new retail shops and fine dining.
~ Have clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl at Boudin Bakery – Known as the best sourdough bakery in San Francisco, Boudin has been around since the Gold Rush in 1849. They make bread animals and heart loaves, but best of all, serve chowder inside a sourdough bowl.
~ Take a cable car to Chinatown – You’ll see the line for the cable car at the end of Fisherman’s Wharf. Get your ticket for $7 and wait in line for the next car. Hang on and enjoy the hills. You can hop off at Chinatown for some more shopping and great food!
~ Drink Irish Coffee at the Buena Vista – You don’t have to like Irish Whiskey to enjoy the famous Buena Vista Irish Coffee experience. Pop in and watch the magic as the bartender brews up the coffee. It’s so delicious, you’ll want more than one! Order the fries too, for a midday treat.
~ Walk across the Golden Gate Bridge – Walk 3.4 miles from the wharf to the Golden Gate Bridge. The walk is both breathtaking and stress free along the water. Then you can walk onto the bridge and fully experience the majestic marvel!
If you have some time, here are some more things to do in San Francisco , and don’t miss the Mission Murals!

At Least 2 Are Stabbed on a Party Boat in Brooklyn
Three people were hospitalized, including a man who was struck in the head with a bottle, and more than 1,000 passengers were evacuated, the authorities said.
By Erin Nolan and Eliza Fawcett
Two men were stabbed and another was hit in the head with a bottle on a crowded party boat in Brooklyn on Saturday evening, the authorities said.
The men were hospitalized with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening, police and fire officials said.
The police said the attacks forced the evacuation of more than 1,000 passengers from the boat, a cruise ship called the Cornucopia Majesty , which was docked at Pier 4 at the Brooklyn Army Terminal.
A 32-year-old man was stabbed in the torso, a 40-year-old man was stabbed several times in the chest and abdomen, and a 28-year-old man was hit in the head with a bottle, the police said. All three men were taken to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn.
The stabbings happened just after 5 p.m., the police said. No arrests had been made as of Saturday night, and it was unclear how many attackers had been involved.
The police said they believed that a dispute had escalated into a physical altercation, but that the events leading up to the stabbings were still under investigation.
Just before 8 p.m., the group that organized the party, BYFAR Entertainment, posted a statement to social media .
“Unfortunately, a crime scene developed by the pier, which has caused the postponement of the night event,” the company said. “We will have updates on a later date so just hold on tight with us while we sort everything out. BYFAR Entertainment has always been a beacon of safe events in New York City and this rare occurrence has never been the norm with us.”
In the hours before the fight, the Cornucopia Majesty had hosted a party .
Passengers said in interviews that they had enjoyed dancing, eating and drinking rum aboard the ship, but by early evening, they were standing confused on the pier, surrounded by police cruisers and ambulances.
Glendon Thomas, 29, a resident of New Jersey, said he and several friends realized a fight had broken out on the ship only after they disembarked.
“I saw a guy laying on his friend,” he said, adding that the friend appeared to have a wound on his chest.
Kevaun Whitely, who lives in Brooklyn, said the fight had broken out as a large crowd of rowdy partygoers — many of whom had been drinking alcohol — attempted to disembark through the same door.
“It was like a stampede,” Mr. Whitely, 27, said.
The police kept Mr. Whitely and several other people on board the ship for hours as they checked identification, he said.
“I’m glad we got out safe,” he said, adding, “I hope nobody passed away from all this craziness.”

Carnival cruise ship rescues nearly 30 people from adrift vessel
A Carnival Cruise Line ship rescued nearly 30 people who were stuck at sea on Sunday.
The crew on Carnival Paradise saved 28 Cuban nationals who were signaling for help on a vessel that was adrift around 2:30 p.m. The cruise ship was headed from Tampa, Florida, to Roatan in Honduras at the time.
“The bridge team onboard spotted the vessel and turned the ship around to rescue them,” Carnival said in a news release . “All were taken aboard, given food and were seen by the medical team.” The cruise line also notified the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Key West and officials in Roatan.
The Coast Guard did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment.
The ship was set to visit Roatan on Monday. Carnival Paradise is on a five-day Caribbean cruise that departed from Tampa on Saturday, according to CruiseMapper .
The news comes after Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Apex ship rescued seven people in a small vessel adrift between Cuba and Mexico earlier this month. Another Carnival ship, Carnival Jubilee, also rescued two people stuck in a kayak off the coast of Mexico’s Isla Mujeres in January.
