the moondoggies tour

There is something inherently calming about large bodies of water. In times of emotional duress, standing at the edge of a ocean, watching the waves roll in and out, centers the spirit in a way standing on terra firma cannot. Kevin Murphy chose to title the Moondoggies’ new album Tidelands in part because of a remote area outside his old stomping grounds of Ketchikan, Alaska where he used to go camping and escape from civilization. But more importantly, as the sly recurring themes of water throughout the Seattle quartet’s second full-length underscore, these are songs crafted to provide solace, sense, and cause for celebration in a world fraught with turmoil.

“What the water represents can be taken many different ways,” concedes Murphy. “Many of the lyrics came to me while trying to be constructive in how I dealt with feeling depressed, rather than just getting wrapped up in my own head.”

Although full-throated vocal harmonies are still central to the band’s sound, the ten selections that comprise Tidelands embrace a wider range of timbres and dynamics than their 2008 debut, Don’t Be A Stranger . Stylistically, this sophomore set is a significant creative leap forward for the young band. There are selections fashioned from little more than hushed acoustic guitar and vocals (the haunting “A Lot of People On My Mind”), and others—such as the robust “What Took So Long”—that rise and fall and accumulate momentum, veering towards gospel fervor with impassioned blasts of organ, then reeling back in quiet reflection. Tunes written almost exclusively by Murphy are juxtaposed with those born from long sessions improvising with his band mates: drummer Carl Dahlen, keyboard player Caleb Quick, and bassist Robert Terreberry. There are numbers that were composed at home in Seattle, alongside others created during Murphy’s isolation in Alaska (“Empress of the North”). The haunting “Lead Me On,” featuring violin by Seth Warren of the Maldives, sprang from the union of two different songs by Kevin and Carl. Further enriching the album’s sonic palette are pedal steel performances by another member of the Maldives, Chris Zasche.

Recorded in the winter months bridging 2009 and 2010, the record has a more unified feel than its predecessor. “On our first album, we crammed everything on there, because we didn’t know if we were ever going to have another opportunity,” admits Kevin. “This time I really wanted it to make sense as an album. There was a theme, and I felt that honing in on certain songs and a particular feeling made it a more interesting record, and not just Don’t Be A Stranger, Part 2 .” (Songs deemed worthwhile, but inappropriate for inclusion on Tidelands , found a home on the EP You’ll Find No Answers Here , released in June 2010.)

The new album was produced and recorded by the band and Erik Blood (who also oversaw the making of their debut), with additional production input from Seattle stalwarts Phil Ek and Kurt Bloch. The quartet experimented and took risks during this process: multiple reads on the same song were tried, with various vocal and instrumental arrangements taken up and abandoned until the right balance was struck. While “Empress of the North” appears on Tidelands as a hushed acoustic ballad consisting entirely of acoustic guitar and pained, longing vocals, Blood convinced the guys to record an additional, vintage soul-style rendition of the tune. Bloch, meanwhile, recorded the quartet live-in-studio to capture the feel of their spirited live shows.

Though they sprang from Seattle’s vibrant roots music scene, the Moondoggies are a band schooled in much more than the common touchstones of the current Americana movement; there are no intentions of treading water stylistically here. It’s precisely this creative stretching that has resulted in the bands most artistic step forward to date: Tidelands .

Kevin Murphy Sheds Teen Angst and Calms Down with The Moondoggies

the moondoggies tour

The Maturation Process

Isolation has its perks. Looking to avoid distractions and work on his music, singer/guitarist Kevin Murphy left Bellingham, Wash. and headed north to Ketchikan, Alaska. Holed up in an attic, the young songwriter—not even of legal drinking age at the time—began working on tunes with a four-track recorder. “I think I was just getting burnt out on Bellingham,” he recollects. Upon returning to Washington, his band, The Moondoggies, was born. The group became a fixture at Seattle’s Blue Moon Tavern, which Murphy describes as the kind of place that “back in the day they’d have chicken wire up and people would throw beer bottles at the band.”

The Blue Moon may have lacked frills, but there Murphy and the Moondoggies gained confidence in their material, a whiskey-tinged blend of folk, gospel and old-time rock ‘n’ roll punctuated by three-part harmonies and classic Rhodes organ flourishes. This fall, The Moondoggies will embark upon their first string of continuous tour dates around the Pacific Northwest and Northern California in support of their first album Don’t Be a Stranger . Murphy took time from his day job (he’s a baker) to answer a few of Submerge ‘s questions.

Three members of the band had graduated from the same high school. Were you all friends back then? Yeah, that’s how it all started. I played with the bassist in high school with a different band. The drummer and I hung out since sophomore year. He never played the drums, but he just kind of picked it up. We’d have late nights of messing around on our instruments. It was just us hanging around and stuff like that.

Caleb Quick is the one band member who went to a different school. How did you meet up with him? He’s quite a few years older than I am. He’s 27. I met him through a friend of mine in Bellingham, which is a college town north of Seattle. We just kind of messed around. Did him being older than you affect your chemistry at all when you started playing? The stuff I was doing in high school was a lot louder, and when I moved to Bellingham I started doing my own thing. He’s a piano teacher and has been playing for years. I had some four-track stuff I’d show him, and he’d coax me into singing and playing, because I was really shy about showing it to people. He’d make me drink a 40 and get me to start singing louder. He’s the one who kind of coaxed it out of me.

Was that shyness difficult for you to get over? Yeah. I had a lot of four-track stuff, and I just felt real dorky about showing him, but he liked it, so we just started building on top of that. I wanted to start doing something, but he was my way of going about doing it.

What affect did your time in Alaska have on your songwriting? I definitely wasn’t distracted. There wasn’t a lot to do up there, and there weren’t a lot of people I related to so much, especially where I worked, which was just like tourist work. I turned an attic into this little space. It was one of those things where you didn’t have any time to try to distract yourself if you weren’t getting anything done. I remember crawling up there for hours and just playing and making a lot of tapes and stuff. It was very productive. Going from there to back down here, when I met up with Caleb again, I had a lot more stuff to throw his way.

What was Caleb’s initial reaction to the tapes you’d made in Ketchikan? Well, he was playing with somebody else. I had to coax him back into playing with me again. Our bass player had gotten a Rhodes, and I remember that we were playing, and I had to come up with a way to get [ Caleb ] to come play with us, so I told him we had a Rhodes, and he showed up like a few hours later. I think the fact that I was playing with Bobby [ Terreberry, bass ] and Carl [ Dahlen, drums ] and showing Karl harmonies, and I think he [ Caleb ] was pleased to see that it had come a lot farther than our days in Bellingham.

Prior to that you were doing louder, more garage rock kind of stuff, correct? Yeah, it was your typical high school frustration.

Was it difficult to get everyone to change style so radically? I think it was a natural full circle, because that was the kind of stuff we grew up on. I think there was a point when we were playing that kind of music that we just didn’t feel like we needed to be that loud. My friend John was the singer of that, and that was more about going down into the basement and turning it up as loud as we could. When I started writing my own stuff, it was more like what I had grown up on, and more natural songs that I preferred. We were getting burned out, I think, on just blasting it.

I guess you only have so much aggression before you run out of breath from yelling so much. It was definitely good music for the time, because that’s how you feel most of the time in high school, I suppose. But I grew up obsessed with Nirvana and the Beatles, so there’s a middle of the road. There’s a need to calm down.

Bellingham's NW Tune-Up Festival announces concert lineup and new music-only ticket option

A pr. 23—The Northwest Tune-Up Festival, a music, biking and beer festival, is back for its third year from July 12-14 in Bellingham, with a new music lineup and ticket options.

"NWTU [Northwest Tune-Up Festival] is known for music discovery, legendary performances, and most importantly, as a big, ol' block party in Downtown Bellingham. The festival has evolved year-after-year in response to our community," Hunter Motto, the festival's music director wrote in a news release.

The 2024 festival lineup includes mainstage performers throughout the weekend as well as a new feature of the festival called "Tunetown," where two stages will have free concerts in the afternoons that do not require a Tune-Up ticket.

"Tunetown will showcase the creative local talent in Bellingham, providing an opportunity for music lovers to discover new artists and enjoy the area's vibrant music scene from the free Exhibitor Village," the news release states.

The mainstage concert lineup includes:

— Yonder Mountain String Band

— Lupe Fiasco

— Indigo De Souza

— Petty or Not

— The Lil Smokies

— Emancipator

— Magic Sword

— Protoje meets Tippy I

— The Moondoggies

The festival is also introducing a new type of admission ticket this year for those who mainly want to attend the live music portion of the festival.

Single-day music-only tickets will allow guests to enter the festival in the evenings for concerts, but still have access to bike entertainment, races and vendors. Music-only tickets cost $59 in advance or $69 at the door.

The festival will also have a lineup of 20 craft breweries and cideries serving drinks.

Festival tickets are on sale on the festival's website. Early bird tickets are on sale until Tuesday, April 30 and cost $135 for a 3-day adult ticket and $50 for a youth ticket for ages 13-17 years old. After April 30, tickets will increase to $165 for adults and $60 for youth. Children ages 12 and under are free with a ticketed adult.

Single day tickets, music-only tickets and overnight van-life camping tickets are also available online.
