Set to ELO’s ‘Mr Blue Sky,’ the new commercial is part of Visit California’s $32.8m global campaign and first rebrand in over 10 years.

Visit California, a nonprofit organization focused on boosting the state’s travel industry, has today unveiled a joyful campaign, ‘Let’s Play.’

The commercial is part of ‘The Ultimate Playground,’ which marks Visit California’s first rebrand in over a decade. With a $32.8m media budget, the integrated campaign is set to captivate audiences in the US, Canada, UK, Australia, Mexico and China.

Central to the endeavor is a 30-second commercial featuring a star in the form of a colorful beach ball – a Californian invention from 1938. The lively ball bounces between California’s iconic destinations, from the towering sequoias of Northern California to the sun-kissed beaches of SoCal. Its soundtrack is none other than ELO’s ‘Mr Blue Sky,’ which is often considered the happiest song of all time.

“California’s DNA as a famously playful place is globally recognized,” says Caroline Beteta, president and chief executive of Visit California. “With sunny weather year-round and endless options for entertainment, California is the ultimate playground for visitors from across the globe. This new campaign beautifully captures this distinction and invites the world to come express their individual form of play in California.”

The campaign was ideated and developed by The Shipyard, whose executive creative director Kerry Krasts explained: “Play is a critical part of human existence and can be transformational, especially when combined with travel. California is blessed with the biggest and best playground anyone could ask for and the beach ball represents California’s playful spirit and the contagious nature of fun and joy that you feel when you are here.”

Visit California’s rebrand is informed by research, which revealed that California, along with its “you do you” ethos, inspires people to play. A study by the US National Institute for Play (NIFP) revealed that 43% of UK travelers believe holidays are the only time to truly engage in play. Another 66% express a desire for more play in their lives, with 89% considering fun a necessity during challenging times. A majority (83%) actively seek experiences that bring joy and happiness.

Effective today, the work lives across linear, connected TV, streaming platforms, digital media, podcasts, social media and out-of-home channels.

Who Is The Actress In The Visit California 'What If' Commercial?

Noëlle Renée Bercy

Let's face it. California is probably one of the best states in the entire U.S. There is so much to do, and it's all nearby. The demographic of the state makes both residents and visitors wonder, "what if?" As in, "what if I wanted to go to the beach and snowboarding on the same day?" Or "what if I want to visit a mountain top in the morning and then ride dune buggies in the afternoon?" You don't have to make these difficult decisions in California. That's precisely the idea behind the  Visit California "What If" commercial .

The commercial follows a young actress throughout the Golden State as she points out all the incredible attractions it has to offer. The actress jumps from town to town, showcasing all the fun activities that are possible. From the bottom of Death Valley to the top of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, this commercial proves you don't have to ask yourself these "what if" questions when you're visiting California. The commercial makes viewers wish they were the actress, even when swimming with mermaids at the Hotel del Coronado in San Diego.

So who is the actress in the Visit California 'What If' commercial?

The Louisiana girl shows off California

Believe it or not, the actress in the ad isn't even from California! If you haven't figured it out by now, it's none other than Noëlle Renée Bercy from New Orleans. She got started in acting after successfully auditioning for the New Orleans Center of Creative Arts . Since then, she has appeared in a handful of TV series, including "King's Bachelor's Pad" and "Cloak & Dagger ," as well as short films such as 2020's "Signs" and "The Priest ,"  per IMDb .

Now she's showing the rest of the world how Californians like to live in the new Visit California 'What If' commercial. This is an excellent role for her, as her high-energy personality perfectly represents the go-go-go mindset that most Californians have. Every city she visits increases her excitement, which should be a testament to how much California has to offer. Whatever you want to do in the state, Noëlle makes the viewer feel like they are missing out.

As I have discussed in this column, ad nauseam, commercial real estate transactions are simply leases or purchases. We differ from our residential brethren, in that a large percentage of our transaction volume is leases.

Specifically, some agents ply their entire trade negotiating leases either in renewal, direct or sublease fashion. These professionals are known as “tenant rep” brokers because the majority of their work is on the occupant side of the table.

Notably, as interest rates have risen over the past year and a half, we’ve witnessed a reduction in sales, to the benefit of leases. Fortunately, a commercial occupant has a choice! Also, present in the industrial arena this year is a plethora of sublease business: an occupant no longer needs the space from which they operate and must locate a surrogate to fulfill their obligation.

Today, I’ll illuminate the Top 10 reasons these deals — sales and leases — fail to consummate.

Financing issues: Difficulties in securing financing or unexpected changes in lending terms can jeopardize a deal. Issues such as insufficient funds, a spike in interest rates, or stringent lending requirements can lead to deal termination.

Due diligence concerns: Discoveries made during the due diligence process – that free look period occupants have to study a property – such as environmental issues, zoning violations, or property defects, can cause buyers to walk away from the deal or renegotiate terms.

Title problems: Title defects, unresolved liens, or disputes over property ownership can delay or derail a commercial real estate transaction.

Appraisal shortfalls: If the property appraises for less than the agreed-upon purchase price, buyers may struggle to secure financing or may seek to renegotiate the deal terms.

Environmental issues: Environmental contamination or concerns about potential liabilities related to hazardous materials on the property can complicate or prevent a sale or lease from closing.

Legal challenges: Legal disputes, such as zoning violations, boundary squabbles, or recorded lease agreements, can delay or derail a commercial real estate transaction.

Market volatility: Changes in market conditions, such as uncertainty, shifts in supply and demand, fluctuations in interest rates, or economic downturns, can impact deal viability and cause parties to reconsider their positions.

Renegotiation attempts: One party may attempt to renegotiate deal terms after an agreement has been reached, leading to a stand off and potential deal collapse if both parties cannot come to a satisfactory resolution. We’ll typically see this after an occupant has completed their due diligence and found an issue.

Contingencies: Contingencies outlined in the purchase agreement, such as the sale of another property or obtaining necessary permits, may not be met within the specified timeframe, leading to a cratered deal.

Buyer or seller gets cold feet: Sometimes, one party may simply have a change of heart or lose confidence in the deal for personal or business reasons, leading to deal cancellation. We once had a buy requirement pause because he contracted Covid-19. This caused him to re-think his entire life and business.

Not among the Top 10 but certainly a thing is sometimes you just don’t see it coming! But boom, there it is. The death of a principal, collapse of the financial system (2008, a pandemic in 2020), or a company is sold during your negotiations. Yes! We’ve seen all of these.

The Great: 1) For me the long awaited easy off and on Northbound 101 Loves Travel center is open! 2) They have some hit and run healthy choices of grab and run food choices! 3) Brand new bathrooms! The not ready for prime time: 1) The gas pumps not open yet. 2) Wendy's fast food not open yet either. What a great location when transiting the Northbound 101, before all the multiple direction choices that you may choose to be traveling.

Some healthy choices to grab and go, Love it.

Business travel survives the Zoom era, as leaders jump back on flights

Corporate travel is slowly but surely making a comeback.

It turns out that jet-setting on the company dime has eternal appeal. Business trips can conjure up images of fancy first-class tickets to major cities or staying at a Hilton in a small town about 20 minutes from the airport. Either way, it seems that the pandemic didn’t kill the corporate travel bug.

The brakes on business trips were first pulled when COVID-19 hit, as lockdowns and international travel restrictions were implemented. Zoom took off while planes stalled, as the video-conferencing company went from 10 million daily meeting participants in December 2019 to 300 million a few months later in April 2020.

As the lockdown lifted, some itched to vacation again (surging to the point that the term “revenge travel” was coined), but corporate travel was slow to get its feet off the ground. Its sluggish return made some question if business trips were at the end of an era. Perhaps Zoom and remote work meant that there was no longer a need to leave the house, much less the country, to really connect with others.

“Businesses aren’t going to support nonessential travel if the work being proposed can be done virtually,” Brian Bloom, Korn Ferry’s vice president of global benefits and mobility operations, said in 2021 . And while bosses were looking to cut costs by eliminating travel, workers weren’t looking to risk their health either. In 2021, only one-quarter of those over 55 were comfortable traveling for work even after being vaccinated, according to an IBM survey of 15,000 global participants.

But years later, it seems as if corporate demand hasn’t died off, it just was dozing off for a bit. And the airlines confirmed as much. Alaska Air reported a return to pre-pandemic levels of business travel, as sales for corporate accounts soared by 22% in the first quarter. Delta and United each reported 14% increases in first-quarter revenue, with a United executive noting that the company notched nine of its top 10 corporate booking days in its history this year. That’s coming off of the rebound in 2023 , as air travel rose to 94% of 2019 levels, according to the International Air Transport Association.

Of course, that doesn’t mean that business travel isn’t still going through growing pains . A 2023 report from Deloitte found that while recovery is occurring, the trend “likely faces a limited upside” in part due to the cost of flying and sustainability mandates.

Still, the return of corporate travel is occurring in the background of a years-long campaign to go back to pre-pandemic ways of work, as big names in tech and finance push for a fully in-person week. One of the major talking points for those that suggested back to office work was that it would create better connections , a similar talking point that crops up when it comes to the merits of traveling to meet with clients in-person.

It seems as if the mindset is slowly gaining traction, as a 2023 study from Global Business Travel Association projected spending on business travel will surpass pre-pandemic levels of $1.4 trillion this year and balloon to nearly $1.8 trillion by 2027. After Omicron and other surges, global business travel began to find its footing again in 2022, according to the trade group.

“The headwinds that were anticipated to impact the rebound of global business travel over the past year didn’t materialize and that is good news,” Suzanne Neufang, Global Business Travel Associate’s CEO said in a statement last year to Fortune’s Chris Morris. “This latest forecast now indicates an accelerated return to pre-pandemic spending levels sooner than anticipated as well as growth ahead in the coming years.”

As the ever-looming recession remains unannounced and executives continue to extol the benefits of in-person work, the company card has started to thaw. It appears as if the floodgates, or air gates, are beginning to open up again.

NBA fans are over the 'What A Pro Wants' commercial, but maybe that's what AT&T wanted

travel california commercial

An ad for AT&T titled "What A Pro Wants" is being dubbed by some as "the worst commercial in history" after airing excessively, but maybe that is what the phone and internet provider wanted.

NBA fans tuning into playoff basketball may have noticed the particular commercial featuring Oklahoma City Thunder players Chet Holmgren and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander looping ad nauseam during commercial breaks. In the commercial, the point guard and power forward sing their rendition of Christina Aguilera's "What A Girl Wants," but subbing "pro" for "girl."

"And I'm thanking you for knowing exactly what a pro wants, what a pro needs, whatever makes me happy sets me free," the NBA players sing in unison.

Despite criticism online, the 30-second commercial continues to be aired and lodged into people's brains. One X user even suggested that the NBA playoffs ratings are down because of the ad. But a advertising expert says it could be part of the brand's strategy.

Watch the ad.

'Irritation is a good strategy'

Brian Wieser, a strategic financial analyst of global advertising and technology, told USA TODAY that AT&T may have paid to air the commercial frequently to "irritate the heck out of people."

"Irritation is a good strategy," according to Wieser. "It causes you to remember the brand and take an action. Sometimes people take action more out of hate than love."

Replaying the commercial would also effectively cut costs because the company wouldn't have to create an entirely new ad or divide up its production budget, Wieser said.

USA TODAY contacted AT&T but did not receive a response.

Social media unites on not loving the 'What A Pro Wants' ad

The commercial's frequency prompted viewers to criticize it, including David Ubben, a national college football writer for The Athletic. Ubben shared a post April 28 on X saying, "I'm ready to call it: Aided in part by being forcefed to hoops fans for months, the Chet/SGA 'What a pro wants' is the worst commercial in history."

"I don't know what it sought to accomplish but if the goal was to leave me equal parts confused and annoyed each time: Well done," Ubben's post continued. "... If you told me either of those guys had ever heard that song before this ad was pitched to them, I would be floored."

The Dan Patrick Show , which is streamed on Peacock and Fox Sports Radio, posted a clip on X of the former ESPN personality and his co-hosts talking about the commercial. The caption for the X post said, "By now we know 'What a pro wants.' But what DP and the Danettes want is for this commercial to be put to bed."

X user @IanKarmel posted on April 29 that he doesn't "even know what the 'What a Pro Wants' commercial is advertising."

Legion Hoops, a popular basketball news account on X, shared a post April 23 saying, "Trying to think of the worst moment of my life… oh wait, I remember: it’s watching this Shai-Chet 'What a pro wants' commercial."

Terrence Oglesby, a basketball analyst for the Charlotte Hornets, shared an X post on Monday saying, "Hey @ATT I’ll pay a subscription to never see this 'what a pro wants' commercial again in my life."

At least some X users might be enjoying the ad, with one posting the lyrics sung by Holmgren and Alexander.
