Ever wonder what it’s like to journey to Paris for the weekend, or even Marrakesh? Well, you can find out by tuning into the delightful British travel series, Travel Man , which airs on the UK’s Channel 4, and is now streaming on Hulu.

Currently there are 7 seasons available with 34 episodes ripe for your bingeing pleasure. Travel Man is hosted by Richard Ayoade, the former It Crowd star who is widely popular over in Britain, as he invites famous pals to accompany him in each 23-minute episode — with the exception of two double-length holiday installments.

Why 'The Chef Show' Is Your Next Feel Good Binge

Every episode features a new city, new activities and much more, and Ayoade’s travel companions have ranged from Chris O’Dowd , Paul Rudd and Jon Hamm to Rebel Wilson and Lena Dunham . Most of his guests are directly from his neck of the woods, so their star power may be lost on some viewers less familiar with the Brits.

Premiering in 2015, the series is an offshoot format of another program Ayoade hosted — Gadget Man . The comedian, actor, director, writer and TV host also hosts Britain’s popular game show The Crystal Maze , and that’s where I initially noted Ayoade’s quick humor.

After researching the game show ahead of its Nickelodeon release this year with American host  Adam Conover , a coworker suggested I check out  Travel Man for more hilarious banter. And there certainly is plenty of it for viewers to enjoy as the subjects eat up the sights and sounds of cities such as Brussels, Ibiza, Hong Kong, Miami, Moscow, Paris, Florence, Valencia and Dubai to name a few.

Along with sharing travel costs, from flight and hotel to transport in the city, this series is user-friendly and makes you really consider the possibilities of exploring travel options, especially when they’re calculated for a comfortable two-day time period. As well as visiting and admiring the most popular sights and locations in featured cities, Ayoade and his guests often partake in various excursions, meals, and tours that aren’t always conventional.

One particularly hilarious adventure included Ayoade and comedian Sara Pascoe’s time in Valencia, Spain where they visited the City of Arts and Sciences’ cultural and architectural complex (this also happens to be a filming location for the upcoming third season of Westworld ). While there, they partook in a brief time encased in giant plastic bubbles as they floated on the water feature.

The activity — which is called zorbing — will have you in hysterics as they try to right themselves in the unstable capsule. “Have you zorbed before?” Richard asks Sara.

“I never have, have you? Are you into it?” Sara asks in return.

As Ayoade answers, he says, “For a claustrophobic, it’s a dream” — just a small taste of his sarcastic sense of humor. While that’s just one excursion taken, others that can be seen in accompanying episodes are museum tours, ice skating, sledding, whale watching, gladiator class, cooking classes and more.

Richard Ayoade, master of the idiosyncratic turn-of-phrase, holidays with celebrity comedians in an offbeat travel show, to experience the most efficient 48-hour city break possible. First broadcast on Channel 4 in 2015.

He begins in Barcelona with Kathy Burke, experiencing unusual aspects of the Catalan capital. The pair sample adventurous local cuisine and a cava tasting session becomes untidy.

Ayoade shows Adam Hills how to weekend away with rigour as they head to Istanbul, and crisscross between Europe into Asia. They have a very close shave and haggle at the Bazaar before sharing an awkward moment at a local bath and massage parlour.

Jessica Hynes heads to Iceland on a whirlwind tour with Ayoade. They enjoy the Golden Circle Tour of the Nordic island's most famous waterfalls, glaciers and geysers by helicopter. They also eat rotten shark and attend elf school.

The final episode sees Ayoade and Stephen Mangan in the hustle and bustle of Marrakech. Wanting to experience the city's famous street food, they endure an eye-opening culinary experience of a local delicacy: steamed sheep's head.

Having conquered the world of technology in Gadget Man, acclaimed Director, Author and BAFTA-winning actor Richard Ayoade deserves a break. But there’s a problem; he hates going on holiday. For Richard, travel is boring and stressful and takes far too long. Surely there must be a way to make it more fun, more efficient, and less tedious? ‘Travel Man’ is Richard’s chance to show us where we’re going wrong by having the most culturally efficient holiday possible, with all the boring bits taken out.

Richard Ayoade and a celebrity guest spend 48 hours in a popular city to discover the must-see tourist attractions.

1. Barcelona

Richard wants to relax in Barcelona but his companion Kathy Burke has not had a holiday abroad for over a decade and has a lot of pent up vacationing energy to expend. She may not have the same relaxing cultural break in mind as him.

2. Istanbul

Richard and Adam Hills charter a yacht to cross the Bosphurus into Asia but decide they prefer the ferry back. They dine out on raki and tripe soup, which they decide is perhaps a little ‘too Turkish’. Adam tries his hand at bartering when he buys a carpet in the grand bazaar and Richard subjects himself to a traditional Turkish shave with a cut throat razor.

Despite the cold and the lack of daylight, Iceland is a popular destination in the winter but can Richard see the appeal? Jessica and Richard use a helicopter to cram 10 hours of sightseeing into 3 before dining out on rotten shark. Suitably refreshed they set out to go whale watching, see the Northern Lights and cast a clinical eye over the famous Blue Lagoon spa.

4. Marrakech

Richard and Stephen Mangan immerse themselves in the culture of the city as they visit its famous 'horrific smelling' tanneries and try eating sheep’s head. They also attempt to negotiate the desert terrain outside the city by balloon and camel, before explore the Saadian tombs and try their hands at traditional storytelling.

The best travel TV series to watch in 2024 (so far)

W e may only be a few months in, but 2024 is already delivering when it comes to captivating travel shows and documentaries. Whether you're into discovering the history and traditions of little-known Europe or wanting to follow an exhilarating race across East Asia, there's something for everyone on the small screen.

Of course, there's also plenty of legendary personalities from the travel and TV world to help transport us (virtually) to each corner of the globe, from David Attenborough and Michael Palin to Bettany Hughes and Joe Lycett. The question is, what do we watch first?

Before we get started, did you know...

According to new research by  Intrepid Travel , just 13% of women feel they are represented on TV travel shows and 62% say that seeing a female host would encourage them to travel more. This is supported by the statistic that just 21% of travel shows on two mainstream TV channels have women presenters. To combat the perception that adventure travel is just for men and close this 'Adventure Gap', the B Corp organisation have launched a pop-up exhibition in London highlighting the untold stories of female travellers.  AdventurHER: Travel Tales of Inspiring Women  will run from 19-21 April from 10am until 6pm at 20-22 Camden Passage, Islington.

Race Across the World

The fourth series of Race Across the World has now begun on BBC One. This time, the five teams of two are racing 15,000km across Asia, from the intoxicating Japanese capital of Tokyo to the paradise island of Lombok in Indonesia. En route, they will be racing to check points, which involves crossing eight borders and six seas. The catch? They have no smartphone technology, internet access or credit card – just a limited budget and the kindness of strangers to help them get them from A to B.

Michael Palin in Nigeria

This three-part series on Channel 5 sees the acclaimed travel presenter Michael Palin take on an epic 2,000km journey across Nigeria, expected to be the third most populated country within the next half a century. Historian Bettany Hughes returns to our screens with the third series of Treasures of the World on Channel 4. In the six episode series, she seeks out the historic and cultural secrets of Eastern Europe, from the oldest worked gold in Bulgaria to local hospitality in Albania. As Hughes describes herself, the treasures uncovered are usually ‘familiar stories found in unexpected places’.
