trip film netflix

By Lena Wilson

Most people don’t prepare for getaways with their spouses by buying a hammer, a hacksaw, duct tape and rope — but Lars (Aksel Hennie) is not most people, and “The Trip,” directed by Tommy Wirkola, is not most movies. Its initial premise is this: Lars has planned to murder his wife, Lisa (Noomi Rapace), during their holiday, but he’s thwarted when it turns out Lisa has been preparing to do away with him on the very same trip. Unfortunately, while that concept promises a fun, agile thriller, “The Trip” all too quickly descends into a juvenile, nihilistic mess.

Lars and Lisa’s mutual blood bath turns into a group affair when some unexpected outsiders, including the escaped convicts Dave (Christian Rubeck), Roy (Andre Eriksen) and Petter (Atle Antonsen), coincidentally join the fray. Each actor gamely tackles the ensuing violence and emotional turbulence, and Rapace is particularly excellent at juggling the two. The film reveals its many surprises through flashbacks, sharp editing and an absurd script clearly aiming for irreverence.

But “The Trip” upsets its own tenuous balance of darkness and drollery, grasping at tasteless material about genitals and poop, though its basic premise is much smarter — and perfectly delightful — on its own. Such artlessness turns what could be a quick, jaunty movie into a slog. By the end of a protracted attempted rape sequence, I was dismayed to discover that I was only halfway through its two-hour duration.

“The Trip” is occasionally fun, but other films have handled gleeful gore and psychological torture with a far more skillful touch. The film pays clear homage to Michael Haneke’s “Funny Games,” a whip-smart commentary on cinematic violence. It doesn’t do itself any favors by inviting that comparison.

The Trip Not rated. In Norwegian, with subtitles. Running time: 1 hour 53 minutes. Watch on Netflix.

[Editor’s note: The following review contains major spoilers for “The Trip (Onde Dager).”]

In real life, when married people say they think about murdering their spouse, most don’t actually mean it. In Tommy Wirkola’s devilishly fun black comedy “The Trip” (Norwegian title: “Onde Dager”), they do. Landing somewhere in a delicious Venn diagram between thriller, horror, and comedy, “The Trip” is a fast-paced joy ride that should make even the squeamish delight in a little bloodbath. Cheeky and inventive in equal measure, with brilliant performances all around, a whipsmart script and sharp pacing make “The Trip” one of the most fun watches of the year.

(Since much of the fun comes from an endless parade of rabbits Wirkola pulls out of his insane hat, knowing too much about the action could take the edge off. Consider yourself warned.)

The movie opens on a soap opera set, where a smoldering couple is fighting over an outrageous infidelity. “That’s right, I’m pregnant with your dead brother’s son’s baby,” a blonde actress cries, before the sleepy director calls cut. This is Lars (Aksel Hennie), a dissatisfied TV director whose career hasn’t worked out quite how he imagined. He’s heading to his family cabin with his wife Lisa ( Noomi Rapace ), where they plan to go hiking, a detail he makes sure to share loudly with anyone who will listen, including said blonde actress and his grouchy father. But when he stops by the hardware store for a hammer, saw, and rope, it’s clear he has other plans.

Exuding big “fabulous diva who hasn’t worked in years” energy, Rapace’s Lisa is dialed in from her first dramatic entrance. Sauntering down the driveway in a pink getup with sunglasses, hoop earrings swaying and gum popping, she hands Lars her purse as if he’s the help. With a final glance at the nefarious tools he’s squirreled away, Lars slams the trunk and the rocking title rolls. Buckle up, we’re in for a hell of a ride.

The Trip norway netflix

Once at the cabin, the couple needle each other about every little thing. They fiddle over the stove temperature, and when Lars won’t touch the raw steak he’s prepping, Lisa grabs it with her hands. Even their bickering is grounded in an all-too-relatable naturalism that feels forced in most on-screen marriages. After a tense dinner, Lars heads down to the basement to lay out his loot. Soon, he’s sneaking up behind Lisa, hammer in hand. It’s all so early in the film that it seems a prime fake-out. Perhaps he’s just planning some carpentry? But when he lunges at Lisa, she turns around and tases right him in the neck. Oh!

When Lars comes to, he’s tied up and, this time, Lisa is the one holding the hammer. When he admits he planned to kill her for her life insurance, she fesses up to her own similar plan. The camera swings to the left, and yellow block letters announce: “One Day Earlier.” This is the first of many quick flashes in the film, each one revealing information that upends the action in increasingly outrageous ways. It’s a clever trick, and it’s also one that’s never too indulgent. When the same technique introduces three escaped convicts with psychotic Three Stooges vibes, the fun has really only just begun.

There’s a whimsical, Wes Anderson-like quality to the way Wirkola introduces characters and plot twists, though the tone is more Martin McDonagh with a dash of Quentin Tarantino. Like the best McDonagh plays, the violence reaches wildly gratuitous levels without ever feeling like overkill. There’s comedy in the exaggeration, like the sound of brains plopping on the floor or a hand mangled by a boat motor. As the surprises roll in, the plot grows more and more outlandish, revealing the film’s full-on tongue-in-cheekiness. When Lars tells his father, bleeding out in his beloved hammock, “I just blew a guy’s balls off with a shotgun,” dad replies: “I’m proud of you, my son.”

Both seasoned Norwegian talents, Rapace and Hennie are wickedly good together. With her hair dyed a shade of trying-too-hard blonde, she milks humor from the desperate actress routine, despite sporting a quite successful career. Equal parts lumbering and lost, Hennie is the perfect blend of bumbling fool who looks like he could wrestle a mountain lion if he had to. With the right level of empathy and insanity, these two sell the emotion behind the couple’s bloody vitriol, eventually grounding the film in a satisfying human realness. There’s no risk of things turning maudlin once an old man has been shredded by a lawnmower, but it’s nice to find a little light at the end of this bloody, whirlwind tunnel.

Will There Be A 'Constellation' Season 2 On Apple TV+? Everything We Know

'constellation' ending explained: what happens to jo and henry in the season 1 finale, 'constellation's mind-bending episode 6 twist, explained, 'constellation' cast gives an exclusive look behind the scenes at the making of apple tv+'s space thriller.

Netflix’s The Trip is — well, I was going to give the usual spiel about it being a Norwegian black comedy-slash-thriller starring Noomi Rapace ( The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo , Prometheus ) and directed by Tommy Wirkola of Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters fame, but I’m just gonna cut to the chase and say it’s some sick shit. And as most sick shit goes, its smooth-as-guts-in-a-blender-set-on-puree mix of yucks and yuks is very much a take-it-or-leave-it affair.

THE TRIP : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

The Gist: For some reason, The Trip doesn’t open with a crazy scene that’s on the precarious lip of a suspenseful cliff before flashing back to the beginning — it just opens at the beginning. How very novel! So, a husband and wife sit in bed arguing and the conversation gets pretty nutty and out there and, as we suspected, they’re just actors on the set of a soap opera. Lars (Aksel Hennie) is the director. He chitchats with a co-worker about how he and his wife are going up to the cabin this weekend and he stresses repeatedly how she wants to go on a long hike into the mountains, and isn’t that dangerous? On his way home, he stops to visit his dad at the nursing home so the old man can question his manhood. Then he goes to the hardware emporium for a hammer, a hacksaw, some rope and duct tape — you know, the Serial Killer Special, $49.95.

He picks up Lisa (Rapace), and the bickering starts immediately. Needling. Irritation. Teensy little digs. Death by 1,000 cuts on both sides. Their professional lives are lousy and the poison’s bled into their personal lives. They get to the cabin and as he unloads his collection of suspicious tools, the camera lingers on a cabinet full of shotguns, and as she mills about the kitchen, the camera gets a lensful of butcher and bread knives. Why? No reason. Just the usual stuff you’d find in a cabin in the Norwegian forest where you might go hunting and then need to cut up the animal you killed.

Lars and Lisa drive each other nuts cooking and eating dinner, and before bed they play a game of Scrabble that only further sledgehammers the wedge between them. The next day, we follow Lars as he fetches the hammer from the basement and heads to the kitchen for two belts of booze, and the camera angle for this shot is canted, oh so very canted. He sneaks up behind Lisa and before he can ballpeen a hole in her skull she quickly turns around and tases him. It’s probably safe to say that marital counseling would be pointless at this stage of their relationship.

What Movies Will It Remind You Of?: The War of the Røsens ! (Yeah, I know, Røsen is Swedish, not Norwegian. Just give me this one!)

Performance Worth Watching: Rapace and Hennie are equally excellent at playing shitty people, pairing nicely like fava beans with a nice Chianti.

Memorable Dialogue: Lars gets in the nastiest dig ever (decontextualized to avoid a spoiler): “Maybe you’ll be satisfied now.”

Sex and Skin: None, but be warned, there are disturbing scenes of sexual assault.

Our Take: …Then again, Lars and Lisa do seem to finally be on the same page, homicidal though it may be, so loll that sweet and sticky caramel-flavored irony around in your mouth for a minute there. The revelation that they want to kill each other in the most literal fashion comes at the 21-minute mark of a 114-minute movie, so it’s not a spoiler to say things escalate from there, via a game of one-upspersonship that goes from cold to violent to utterly ruthless to extremely violent to repulsive to even more extremely violent to thoroughly complicated to flat-out gory as hell. And yes, other characters get involved, lest it get too repetitive. If you can hang with it through its demented twists and turns — no guarantees, love it or hate it, no deposit no return, mileage may vary, etc. — it’ll be to see what resolution Wirkola and co-screenwriters Nick Ball and John Niven came up with, and not because you root for any of these people, who are, at best, poor examples of the human species.

So I guess that means The Trip exists in the satire realm, where marital discord is depicted with immense exaggeration and grotesque homicidal impulses are rendered in rich, bloody reds. One wonders if Lars and Lisa find this elevation of confrontation therapeutic, going from passive-aggressive to insanely aggressive, dropping the sniper rifles for a knife fight, sometimes not at all in a metaphorical fashion. Wirkola occasionally crosses the line between bad taste (which is good; think John Waters) and tastelessness (which is bad; think R-rated Adam Sandler vehicles), spending the majority of the budget on burst blood vessels in eyes and viscous strings of various bodily fluids drooling from mouths and hamburgered knees and innards turned into out-ards — total gorebuckets, more splatter than two or three of those wussy middling slasher movies they make for eight-year-olds these days, he said, nudge wink grain of salt.

Anyway, the movie adheres to the cliche that all is fair in love and war. It’s amusing and irreverent, bleak and repulsive — and therefore an exercise in cognitive dissonance, I guess. It’s definitely conceived more in sickness than in health. For better or worse. ’Til death by disembowelment or shotgun do we part. I’m gonna stop there.

Our Call: STREAM IT. The Trip is far from great, and at its best, it’s barely good. But it inspires a few choking laughs, it’s challenging in its unpleasantness, and it’s likely to satisfy any iron stomachs who are up to the task.

The Trip (2021) ending explained – what danger is inside the cabin?

the ending of the Netflix film The Trip 2021

This article discusses the ending of the Netflix film The Trip (2021), so it will contain major spoilers.

Read the review.

The Trip is a Norwegian dark comedy thriller that tells the story of a married couple, Lisa (played by Noomi Rapace) and Lars (played by Aksel Hennie), who seem hell-bent on killing each other. Due to financial hardship, both parties plan on killing the other for life insurance during a trip in a cabin. But when it appears as though they may both kill each other, they learn that three escaped inmates have taken shelter in the cabin.

As a result, the three prisoners, Petter (Atle Antonsen), Dave (Christian Rubeck), and Roy (André Eriksen), take Lisa and Lars hostage. In a scene that possibly goes too far for a comedy, Dave threatens to rape Lars until Lisa states that she will provide the prisoners with money for their release. And after they accept, Petter, Dave, and Roy enjoy the luxury of the cabin whilst Lisa and Lars are left to reflect on their marriage.

Seemingly making amends, Lisa and Lars make a plan for freedom. Upon claiming to need the toilet, Lars knocks out Roy with a sock of billiard balls, which then sets off a chain of events that sees the three prisoners attempt to find Lisa and Lars. Upon Roy refinding them, Lars shoots Roy in the head.

Netflix film The Trip (2021) ending explained

There appears to help at hand when Lars’s father, Mikkel, appears at the cabin, and he shoots Dave in the leg. But lurking from behind is Petter, and he stabs Mikkel before he throws him on top of what appears to be a very sharp  lawnmower. With chaos breaking out, Lisa heads towards a boat whilst Dave looks for anything to tend to his leg wound. But he’s out of luck when Lars finds him first. Before Lars ponders on where to shoot Dave, Lars steals his sweater and kills him.

After Mikkel dies in a hammock, Lars chases after Lisa who is now trapped on the boat with Petter. Now instead of Lars vs Lisa, it’s Lars and Lisa vs Petter. They have a battle on their hands. Even the use of a fire extinguisher and a flare gun isn’t enough to kill Petter. However, Lars is eventually able to overpower Petter and pushes him into the boat’s engine, slicing his arms off.

“Sorry, but you no longer add value.” And with that, Lars and Lisa chuck Petter into the river and watch as he drowns. But when the rope tangles around Lar’s foot, Lisa is left with a choice. Save Lars or leave him to die. Ultimately, she saves him. (Quite the turnaround from how she felt at the beginning of the movie).

As The Trip concludes, Lars and Lisa are alive but broke. That is until the media take an interest in their story of survival. One thing leads to another, and they end up making a screenplay on their experience, making them millionaires. Although to save face, they change a few details, such as removing the moment that Lars licked Petter’s shoe.

This movie is an absolute classic! Not only is this story filled with beautiful landscapes, but it’s also quite moving. It’s based on a true story, so you’re for sure getting the real deal here. The plot follows a freshly divorced woman, Liz, as she embarks on a 9 month-long trip to find herself. The story kicks off in New York but Liz travels to Italy, India, and Bali on this self-discovery journey. It’s fast-paced (only about an hour and a half long) and filled with travel motivation. For anyone longing for a 2000’s rom-com after two emotional films, I’ve got you! This is such a feel-good type of movie that it’s perfect for anyone stuck at a boarding gate, bus terminal, or rainy day when camping ! The story follows the daughter of the President of The United States as she steps off on a European adventure to rebel against the constant security imposed on her. Pretty much everyone and their mother knows this is a great movie. This commercial success follows the ordeal of an Eastern European man stranded inside of New York’s John F. 18. The Mummy (1999)

This one is another classic! If you’re in the mood for an adventure comedy, this is what you need to watch. Out of all these travel movies, The Mummy has a very distinct vibe. Is a mix of romance, adventure, comedy, and terror that just ticks all the right boxes! It tells the story of an expedition of treasure-seeking explorers in the Sahara Desert. When they uncover an ancient tomb, they set free a  3,000-year-old mummy by accident. And I’ll let you find out the rest from there! Get ready to visit Egypt!

The Way Movie

19. The Way (2010)

The Way is visually stunning and emotionally touching. It tells the story of a man who goes to St. Jean Pied de Port, France to gather the remains of his deceased adult son. His son died in a storm while attempting to complete the Camino de Santiago (The Way of Saint James trail). There, he decides to embark on the pilgrimage himself to honor his son’s desires. It’s an emotional ride but a beautiful one!

The Bucket List Movie

20. The Bucket List (2007)

A travel movie with Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman is a film worth watching! This comedy-drama follows two men suffering from a terminal illness as they set out on a once-in-a-lifetime kind of road trip. On their journey, they will check off everything they need to from their bucket lists before actually “kicking the bucket”. Best Travel Movies On Netflix - On The Road

21. On The Road (2012)

Best Travel Movies On Netflix - Wild Oats

22. Wild Oats (2012)

This film is for those who want to watch movies that are a ton of fun! Wild Oats is a great movie capable of getting a laugh out of most of us. Best Travel Movies On Netflix - The Davinci Code

23. The Da Vinci Code (2006)

Everyone knows The Da Vinci Code in one way or another, right? Whether you’ve read the book or seen the film, this is a travel movie worth watching. The story follows symbologist Robert and cryptologist Sophie as they find themselves in the middle of a political and religious battle amid different believers. I don’t want to spoil anything else but this one is a must-watch!

Best Travel Movies On Netflix - Forgetting Sarah Marshall

24. Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008)

This is one of the best comedies/rom-coms of all time! Not only does it make everyone laugh and cringe a little, it’s also set in beautiful Hawaii. The Trip (Netflix) Film Review: The Darkest of Humor

Posted by Kelly Luchtman | Oct 18, 2021 | Spoiler Free Show Reviews | 0

The Trip (Netflix) Film Review: The Darkest of Humor

The Trip is not for everybody. It’s a Norwegian Netflix film about married couple Lars (Aksel Hennie) and Lisa (Noomi Rapace), a who secretly plan on using their woodsy weekend getaway to kill the other person and make it look like an accident. But when they get to the cabin, a bigger threat is waiting, and they’ll have to come together to beat it. The Trip is very funny, if you like dark humor that sometimes borders on inappropriate. It’s also absurdly violent. Like Tarantino violent. Or, I should say, Wirkola violent. Director Tommy Wirkola ( Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters ) is known for his bonkers gore movies. Case in point: Dead Snow about zombie Nazis in the Arctic who attack a group of student skiers. This film has a little more substance, and no zombies, but Wirkola’s polarizing gory style and extreme satire remain. The Trip is pure mindless entertainment, and I found it hilarious, if a bit long. There is a minor spoiler if you read on.

Lars and Lisa

Lars is a soap opera director who dreams of making movies. Lisa is a struggling actress whose most famous role was in a pharma commercial. They hate each other, and the contempt drips off their tongues all the way to the family cabin. When they arrive, they secretly prepare to murder each other. But their plans are interrupted when they realize three escaped prisoners are hiding in the cabin. Roy (André Eriksen) is a Neo-Nazi body builder who doesn’t know who Anne Frank is, Dave (Christian Rubeck) is smiley and dim, and Petter (Atle Antonsen) is smart and menacing. At first, Lars and Lisa are subdued, but they begin to fight back, and from there the violence escalates into spurting blood and guts. You’ll have to suspend disbelief around how many punches a man can take to the face and still stand and fight. And nobody pulls punches for Lisa. She gets knocked around as much as the men.  While every actor in the film commits to their odious or ridiculous characters, these roles are particularly meaty for drama actors Aksel Hennie and Noomi Rapace, because they get to display their comedic chops.

Our Take on The Trip

Is The Trip childish? Yep. Mean-spirited? For sure. Gratuitously violent? Oh yes. But it’s fun. Think The War of the Roses , but funnier and bloodier. You will definitely find yourself saying, “Oh man!” as you laugh, and “Ewwww!” toward the end. Surprisingly, the cast is full of heavy hitters. In addition to those mentioned above, Nils Ole Oftebro ( Mammon, Acquitted, Black Lake , etc) plays a small but crucial role. My only beef is that the film is too long. The battle between the prisoners and the couple is a bit drawn out, but I guess a movie like this is about the journey, not the destination.

11 Travel Movies on Netflix to Download for Your Next Flight

By Meredith Carey

Into the Wild 2007

Whether you're back at home between trips or prepping for a two-hour-plus flight, watching classic travel movies on Netflix can be one of the best ways to spirit yourself away to a new destination. It's a great time to do so, too: With the streaming options below, this might be the best collection of films on the platform yet—especially when it comes to documentaries. And as more and more airlines move their in-flight entertainment from seatback screens to mobile apps, you might as well download these ahead of your next flight, so you can watch what you'd like (and not Hitch for the 20th time).

Note that you'll have to head off of Netflix to see some of our other favorites that the streaming site has previously carried (like road trip classic Y Tu Mamá También , which is available to rent on Amazon, or Catch Me If You Can , available on Peacock). And once you've finished this list, don't worry, we have a whole other list of our favorite travel TV shows on Netflix —including most of the late Anthony Bourdain's work—to binge.

For now, here's a list of some of our favorite movies involving travel by land, air, and sea, that are available right now on Netflix.

All products featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. If you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Eat Pray Love Travel Movies

Eat Pray Love (2010)

Elizabeth Gilbert’s memoir of leaving her busy city life behind to seek new adventures in Italy, India, and Indonesia has charmed millions of readers. The film may not have the emotional heft of the book, but the scenery it provides more than makes up for it.

Roma Travel Movies

Roma (2018)

One of Netflix's first original travel movies, Alfonso Cuarón's beautiful tribute to his youth in Mexico City recreates a world many felt had been lost to time. And if you want to stay in Roma 's world after the credits roll, look no further than our guide to Mexico City Airbnbs that features a number of rentals that feel like they could have been been in the film .

My Octopus Teacher 2020

My Octopus Teacher (2020)

This Netflix original documentary—which won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature in 2021—follows filmmaker and freediver Craig Foster as he forges a friendship of sorts with a wild octopus that lives in a kelp forest off the coast of Simon's Town, an area outside of Cape Town more commonly known for its penguin-filled beaches. Follow Foster as he learns about the marine life in the area, and applies lessons he learns from the octopus, who he visits every day for a year, to his own life above sea level.

The Terminal 2004

The Terminal (2004)

While there are plenty of stories of travelers and refugees taking up a semi-permanent residence in an airport terminal, this version—where Tom Hanks plays a traveler who spends nine months in New York's JFK airport after arriving, only to find his passport is invalid and he can't return home—is completely fictional. Look for appearances by Stanley Tucci , Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Zoe Saldana, but don't look for recognizable JFK airport landmarks, as the terminal scenes were actually shot on a soundstage built into a hangar at L.A.'s Palmdale Regional Airport.

Casino Royale 2006

Casino Royale (2006)

Pick any of the 24 released Bond films and you'll watch the MI6 agent jetset from places like Dunn River Falls in Jamaica, in 1962's Dr. No, to Mexico City in the opening scene of Spectre . But we think Casino Royale has some of the best filming locations of them all—at least until No Time to Die hits theaters later this year—as it was filmed in Prague , the Bahamas, and Venice and Lake Como in Italy.

The Dawn Wall 2017

The Dawn Wall (2017)

Free Solo , the stress-inducing documentary that followed rock climber Alex Honnold as he scaled the 3,000-foot-tall El Capitan in Yosemite National Park without a rope, isn't on Netflix. (You'll have to go to Disney+ to watch it.) But The Dawn Wall is, and it'll give you a similar sense of adventure from the comfort of your couch or airplane seat. It follows Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson, the first climbers to attempt a free ascent of a section of El Capitan known as, you guessed it, the Dawn Wall. While they don't use equipment to aid their climbs, unlike Honnold they do use a harness and rope as a safety net.

Into the Wild 2007

Into the Wild (2007)

Based on a Jon Krakauer book by the same name, this Oscar-nominated movie follows Christopher McCandless (played by Emile Hirsch) as he hikes and hitchhikes all across North America, hitting California, North Dakota, Colorado, Utah, and many more U.S. states before ending up in Canada. But before you go planning a trip to see the bus that served as the real McCandless's home in the later parts of his life, know it's been relocated to the Museum of The North in Fairbanks, where it will be showcased soon in its own outdoor exhibit.

Chasing Coral (2017)

You may not be able to travel to see the Great Barrier Reef , the subject of this Netflix documentary, for much longer if we don't do something about climate change and ocean warming. The film uses high-tech camera equipment and time lapses to show the speed and scale of the deterioration of the coral, as it turns from colorful, vibrant ecosystems into a barren, lifeless wasteland. You'll feel truly gutted once the movie's over, but also a renewed drive to act. To learn more about the movie and hear firsthand about what it took to film, keep reading here .

Adrift 2018

Adrift (2018)

Another movie adaptation of a book—this time Red Sky in Mourning: A True Story of Love, Loss, and Survival at Sea by Tami Oldham Ashcraft— Adrift follows Tami (played by Shailene Woodley) as she sails with her beau Richard (played by Sam Claflin) from Tahiti to San Diego . The couple's path is intersected by a hurricane, setting them adrift and into survival mode. It's a harrowing, real life tale—but we won't give you any spoilers as to how it ends.

The Trader 2018

The Trader (2018)

If you're short on time, this documentary following the rural route of a traveling trader in the Republic of Georgia is perfect—it's just 23 minutes long. Despite its length, it packs a lot of emotion in, following Gela Kolochovi as he brings second-hand clothes, kid's toys, equipment and more to small towns in exchange for potatoes.

A Life on Our Planet

A Life on Our Planet (2020)

It couldn't be a list of travel movies without at least one appearance from Sir David Attenborough. And this one isn't the usual fare, turning the lens on the celebrated naturalist and beloved narrator himself. Over the course of the documentary, Attenborough reflects on his more than 90 years on earth so far, and his hopes for the protection of our planet and its residents big and small in the future. If you love the movie, be sure to check out his memoir by the same name, which delves deeper into the movie's message.

This Surreal Comedy With a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes Is a Total Mind Trip

The slapstick comedy already has the makings of a future cult classic.

The Big Picture

  • Original films are rare, but Hundreds of Beavers is a surreal comedy hit with great audience reception.
  • Director Mike Cheslik's low-budget film merges slapstick comedy with absurdity in a unique and entertaining way.
  • The success of Hundreds of Beavers at festivals and roadshows suggests a resurgence in surrealist comedy.

Based on the current trajectory of the entertainment industry, truly original film projects are only few and far between. Although there are a select few filmmakers like Christopher Nolan and Quentin Tarantino who can generate enthusiasm based on their names alone, it’s become increasingly difficult for up-and-coming filmmakers to gain exposure for projects that fit outside of typical genre norms. Finding the next Sam Raimi or Peter Jackson is difficult when the audience simply don’t have access to see their work. However, once in a while a film is able to come out of nowhere, and the slapstick comedy Hundreds of Beavers already has the makings of a future cult classic .

Written and directed by Mike Cheslik with a production budget of just over $150,000, Hundreds of Beavers is a labor of love geared toward a very specific audience. By merging slapstick comedy with creative creature designs and an action-packed “man versus nature” premise, Cheslik has made a film that is nearly impossible to describe. Despite its peculiar details, Hundreds of Beavers has become a critically acclaimed hit with a 95% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Hundreds of Beavers

What is ‘hundreds of beavers’ about.

Set in the mid-19th century, Hundreds of Beavers follows a lone applejack farmer as he attempts to survive amidst the forces of the wilderness . Jean Kayak ( Ryland Brickson Cole Tewe ) is not an incredibly social man, but he does occasionally like to invite members of his community over for celebratory events. In the aftermath of a particularly entertaining party, Kayak notices a beaver is stealing one of his applejack kegs, and presumably bringing it back to a family of animals. What begins as a slight indiscretion escalates quickly when Kayak wakes up to find that the beavers have destroyed his farm, leaving him alone in the chilly blizzard. He proceeds to fight a one-man war against the greedy creatures, aiming to both preserve the dignity of his farm and gain vengeance on those who destroyed it.

On a narrative level, Hundreds of Beavers succeeds by slowly escalating the absurdity of the situation . Kayak’s traps get increasingly ridiculous, and the film tracks the intense process he takes to conceive of his elaborate designs; watching the beavers slowly unravel his plans leads to some of the film’s biggest laughs. It’s a credit to Tewe’s physical comedy skills that the film is as entertaining as it is. While a few other unnamed characters appear to aid or barter with Kayak as he bids for his own survival , the majority of the film is centered on the applejack farmer’s growing animosity toward the beavers. Over the course of the film, it becomes increasingly easy to sympathize with Kayak as he pushes himself to his physical and emotional limits.

Hundreds of Beavers is a throwback to classical silent comedies , as it is shot in black-and-white and features obscured, gibberish dialogue. While Kayak has the same charisma of a silent film star like Charlie Chaplin or Buster Keaton , the animals are given anthropomorphic qualities, as they appear to be actors wearing suits. It’s obvious that realism was never a goal for Hundreds of Beavers , and the film succeeds by slowly getting weirder as it goes along; at one point, Kayak is put on trial by a court of beavers and attempts to escape using a rocket ship. No idea is too absurd, and it’s to the film’s credit that it manages to subvert expectations continuously.

‘Hundreds of Beavers’ Became a Word-of-Mouth Hit

An unfortunate fate of many independent films is that they tend to stay on the festival circuit for years without ever getting a widespread release. Even positively reviewed films can have a hard time reaching non-festival viewers if no distributor is willing to invest in its financial prospects. Thankfully, Hundreds of Beavers found the perfect place to make its debut, as the film had its premiere at Austin’s Fantastic Fest in 2022. Known for highlighting cult and idiosyncratic genre films , Fantastic Fest helps give a platform to under-the-radar independent projects.

Hundreds of Beavers earned rave reviews , with critics noting how singular Chesllik’s vision was; it’s impossible to describe his intentions as anything but sincere, as a film as odd as Hundreds of Beavers would seemingly have very little commercial prospects. Surprisingly, Hundreds of Beavers has found success through a series of roadshow appearances throughout the country . Instead of immediately going into limited release, the film has hit select markets in order to build positive buzz and get the word out about how much of a crowd-pleaser it is. While some films benefit from having simultaneous releases on video-on-demand service, Hundreds of Beavers is best seen in a theater with a crowd of genre fans who can all laugh and cringe at the absurdity at the same time.

‘Hundreds of Beavers’ Shows the Evolution of Surrealist Comedy

The success of Hundreds of Beavers is surprising, as surrealist comedies have become rarer within the last few decades . While films like Swiss Army Man and Beau is Afraid have incorporated elements of slapstick surrealism, they have the benefit of having a major independent studio like A24 behind them . With no movie stars or significant financial backers behind it, Hundreds of Beavers has had to succeed on merit alone; the positive reception seems to indicate that the surrealist comedy subgenre may be on the precipice of a comeback.

Comparing the film to other live-action projects feels almost counterintuitive, as stylistically, Hundreds of Beavers has a lot in common with classic animated shows like Tom and Jerry or the characters of Looney Tunes . While there’s a freedom to get surreal that animation allows for, the fact that Cheslik was able to pull off the absurdity of Hundreds of Beavers using practical effects is a stunning achievement. It signifies a great new filmmaker on the rise who can use his limited resources to his advantage.

Hundreds of Beavers is in theaters now.

Ready? It’s time to follow your nose and cut through the noise. Here’s everything you need to know about Demon Slayer season 4, AKA the Hashira Training arc. If you're still playing catch up before May, here’s our guide on how to watch Demon Slayer in order .

Demon Slayer season 4 release date confirmed

Demon Slayer

The Demon Slayer season 4 release date is May 12, 2024 . It will be streaming exclusively on Crunchyroll.

We can expect new Demon Slayer episodes to premiere weekly on Sundays moving forward.

A movie, titled 'To the Hashira Training', dropped in February 2024 in the US and UK for a limited time only. It gave fans a chance to see the first episode a few months early, bringing together Demon Slayer season 4's opening episode as well as the season 3 (Swordsmith Village) finale in one big-screen package.

To the Hashira Training: is Demon Slayer season 4 a movie?

Demon Slayer Hashira Training arc

Demon Slayer season 4 is not a movie . Instead, this 'To the Hashira Training' release follows the same path as the Swordsmith Village arc: the first episode of season 4 was bundled in with the finale of the previous season as a preview movie-of-sorts.

Titled To the Hashira Training, the new Demon Slayer 'movie' (we hesitate to call it a full feature-length adventure) specifically combines Swordsmith Village arc episode 11 with Demon Slayer season 4, episode 1.

That got a limited release in February and is now out of cinemas. Demon Slayer season 4, including an hour-long first episode, will release this May.

Demon Slayer season 4 story: which manga chapters is it adapting?

Demon Slayer

Demon Slayer season 4 will follow on from the end of the Swordsmith Village arc (chapters 98-127 of the manga) by adapting the Hashira Training arc (chapters 128-136) . If you’re following on in the bundled editions, that’s the latter half of Volume 15 and the first three chapters in Volume 16.

No spoilers here, but the source material does give us a taste of what to expect.

The book synopsis reads: "Tanjiro goes to see the Stone Hashira, Himejima, who intends to prepare him for the battles to come. The training to become a Hashira – a high-ranking member of the Demon Slayer Corps – is intense and demanding, and earning Himejima’s approval seems impossible, but Tanjiro won’t give up!"

In straightforward terms, expect Tanjiro to harness more of his powers with the help of various Hashira. The Stone Hashira, Water Hashira, Insect Hashira, Wind Hashira, and Snake Hashira have already been confirmed for the Hashira Training arc, with the 'To the Hashira Training' outlining the group's plans to train the Demon Slayer Corps with a series of well-honed regimens that cater to each Hashira's style.

The upcoming season should also revolve around the emergence of Nezuko’s new powers, namely that she can ‘conquer the sun’ and exist as a demon in the daylight. Series antagonist Muzan Kibutsuji, as shown in the Swordsmith Village finale, is aware of those developments and will be hot on her tail.

Looking further ahead, it also appears to be the last step before the very final anime storyline, dubbed the Final Battle/Infinity Castle arc.

Demon Slayer season 4 cast

Demon Slayer

Tanjiro (Natsuki Hanae), Zenitsu (Hiro Shimono), Inosuke (Yoshitsugu Matsuoka), and Nezuko (Akari Kitou) will all return to the Demon Slayer season 4 cast in the Hashira Training arc.

The Water Hashira Giyu Tomioka (Takahiro Sakurai), Serpent Hashira Obanai Iguro (Kenichi Suzumura), Insect Hashira Shinobu Kocho (Saori Hayami), Wind Hashira Sanemi Shinazugawa (Tomokazu Seki), Mist Hashira (Kengo Kawanshi), Love Hashira (Kana Hanazawa) and Stone Hashira Gyomei Himejima (Tomokazu Sugita) will each be a major presence as Tanjiro begins his training. The former Sound Hashira Tengen Uzui (Katsuyuki Konishi) will also return.

Demon Slayer season 4 trailer: new Hashira Training teaser

The most recent trailer for the Hashira Training season was released in March . While it only features footage from the first episode of the upcoming season, it does tease the upcoming arc. The Hashira will guide Tanjiro through to potentially being a Hashira-in-waiting, and they will train the next generation of Demon Slayer Corps against the surviving Twelve Kizuki/Upper Moons.

The first Demon Slayer season 4 trailer featured a quick recap of the arcs covered so far, plus the confirmed clutch of characters in the new arc. You can also see the new poster below, which highlights the Hashira involved in the titular training.

Demon Slayer

Demon Slayer season 4 episode count: how many episodes are in the Hashira Training arc?

Demon Slayer

The first season of Demon Slayer consisted of 26 episodes – but episode counts have been dwindling since then. The Mugen Train and Entertainment District arcs were seven and 11 episodes respectively, while Swordsmith Village was also 11 episodes.

Hashira Training, however, only has a small amount of source material to draw from. Without some serious padding, it’s unlikely to stack up to even Mugen Train’s truncated seven-episode run. While it’s been confirmed as a full season, we wouldn’t be surprised for it to be a short pit stop on the way to bigger things – a six-episode season (tops) would be our guess. But even something as short as two or three episodes could be realistic, especially given the one-hour premiere.

Where to watch Demon Slayer

Demon Slayer

The first three seasons of Demon Slayer are available to watch on Crunchyroll . The first three seasons are now also available on Netflix and Hulu in some regions.
