Travel insurance can be one of the most confusing parts of booking a trip. Since many credit cards already include travel insurance, the question of whether to buy airline insurance can make sense.

Why would you pay twice for the same benefits? But, that’s the thing: Not every type of credit card covers the same travel insurance perks.

You’ll want to check if the card you use to book a flight covers a cancellation , lost baggage or an abrupt change to your travel plans — perhaps due to a medical emergency. Being prepared can save you a lot of money in the long run.

This is especially true if you cannot take a trip, which would mean forfeiting the money you spent on nonrefundable flights and hotels.

If you want maximum protection, consider your credit card insurance with an airline’s policy like from American Airlines travel insurance.

Understanding the American Airlines insurance policies can protect you on your next trip with the carrier.

American Airlines trip insurance plans

voucher for aa travel insurance

American has plans for international and domestic trips you book with the carrier, and the services are administered by Allianz Global Assistance . You’ll see the offer when completing a flight reservation on the website.

When you qualify, the policy can refund part of an itinerary or the entire purchase based on any travel costs or emergency medical expenses in case of a disruption or delay. The promotional offer you receive when booking a ticket is based on the cost of your flight. It is valid for that trip only, unlike annual or multi-trip plans that you would buy from Allianz directly.

Often, you won’t see the trip insurance policy on your American reservation, as it's sold by a third party. But keep a record of the policy information.

What does American Airlines travel insurance cover?

When you buy American Airlines travel insurance, you will be eligible for coverage for various travel issues like delayed or lost bags, medical expenses during the trip or if you have to cancel the trip altogether.

Some features of travel insurance can vary depending on where you live, so be sure to read the fine print.

This is what the flight insurance from American Airlines covers:

Trip cancellation and trip interruption costs. If you paid for any nonrefundable expenses and have to cancel or change your trip due to reasons like illness or injury, you’ll receive a refund for those costs. This can be especially valuable for bucket-list trips like cruise or safari vacations where you spend a lot of money. Each U.S. state sets a limit for the refund amount, so be sure to review those details.

Emergency medical transportation. If you need to be airlifted or driven a long distance to the nearest appropriate hospital or urgent care center, this would be covered by insurance. This can be pretty expensive in some remote locations, and insurance can cover the cost of a helicopter airlift if needed. The American travel insurance benefit for emergency medical transportation is as much as $50,000.

Emergency medical and dental protection. While at the hospital or urgent care facility, you may need immediate care. American Airlines trip insurance would cover up to $10,000 in medical and dental expenses for an eligible occurrence.

Travel delay. This is a valuable benefit, one covered by many credit cards. If you encounter a trip delay of at least six consecutive hours, this insurance will provide meal and accommodation reimbursements. The maximum coverage limits vary by U.S. state. Airlines have their own policies in these situations, and if traveling from the European Union or on an E.U.-based carrier to Europe, you may also be covered for additional compensation.

Lost or damaged baggage. If your baggage is lost, damaged or stolen, American Airlines travel insurance reimburses you up to $500 for your personal items.

Baggage delay. This protection covers the contents of your bag if your baggage was delayed for more than 24 hours. You’ll want to keep eligible receipts of your purchase to submit a reimbursement claim, typically up to $100 per person.

24-hour assistance. This policy would provide you with direct access to someone who can assist you with any travel-related emergencies.

Rental car collision and damage. You would be eligible for primary coverage without a deductible.

What isn't covered by American Airlines travel insurance?

Remember that airlines like American receive a percentage of the sale of travel insurance, so they are eager to promote it. But not all circumstances are covered. This means it is important to review the exclusions.

These are some of the situations that wouldn't be eligible for reimbursement or assistance.

Losses due to government restrictions, travel advisories or warnings (For example: If the U.S. government issues a warning not to travel somewhere).

Losses due to known, foreseeable and expected events (like a hurricane where advance warnings are available).

Epidemics, natural disasters, pollution leading to flight disruption and war.

Preexisting medical conditions.

Pregnancy, fertility treatment and childbirth.

Health issues related to alcohol or drug use.

Injury during professional or amateur sports training.

The cost will vary depending on where you are going, often based on the total nonrefundable trip cost and the state where you reside.

To get a more detailed idea of an American Airlines travel insurance plan, an online form calculates your trip details to give an approximate cost. After purchasing it, you have 15 days to change your mind and request a refund as long as your trip hasn't started or you haven't filed a claim.

This travel protection plan offers insurance for just one trip itinerary unless you buy an annual plan. A single trip insurance plan otherwise does not cover additional trips or mishaps that happen before or after your flight journey. It comes with protections for lost bags or emergency medical assistance, which can be helpful — especially if you don’t use a credit card to pay for the trip that has its own insurance protections. Other benefits can include trip interruption or cancellation, emergency dental care, rental car insurance and baggage delay.

You can pay for this when you purchase a flight on American’s website or any time after you buy a ticket on the Allianz website.

American travel insurance plans come underwritten by Jefferson Insurance Company or BCS Insurance Company. They use AGA Service Company as the licensed producer. These plans are recommended and sold by Allianz Global Assistance, not American Airlines.

Yes, if canceled within 15 days of purchase and your trip has not begun. If you have filed a claim, then you would not be able to cancel.

You can pay for this when you purchase a flight on American’s website or

on the Allianz website.

Is American Airlines travel insurance worth it?

This will come down to your own personal risk tolerance, but with so many exclusions on the list, it may not be. That’s because you are already protected by your credit card in many instances.

If you use a card like The Platinum Card® from American Express or the Chase Sapphire Reserve® to pay for your trip, you may end up paying again on certain benefits when buying flight insurance from American.

Be sure to compare the benefits, as the amount of lost baggage or emergency medical coverage can be different for each credit card or airline.

Buying a nonrefundable flight ticket may be one of the top reasons to consider this flight insurance, but make sure that the exclusions don’t apply to you. Also, you will want to consider your finances if you are required to cover the cost of lost bags or flights.

If not, the small added cost of insurance could be decent protection in the long run if something were to go wrong during the journey.

AA Travel Insurance: Reviews, Voucher Code & Policy Information

AA logo next to a plane

AA Travel Insurance offers additional benefits to its AA members. Our two favourites are the excess waiver and new for old baggage. Don’t worry if you’re not a member, the policies rate highly with industry professionals and there are bonuses for everyone. Here’s a teaser, golf cover is standard in their policies! AA Travel Insurance Reviews

a letter and magnifying glass

Approximately 97% of customers read online reviews before they buy. That’s not just travel insurance, but across the board (that new ramen restaurant, snowboard, speakers etc).

Virtually every one of us does it and it can be really helpful, particularly those reviews that seem to answer our questions directly! Sometimes you have to take them with a pinch of salt though.

We found that the online reviews on AA are very mixed. On the one hand, reviews from industry professionals are really positive. On the other hand, customers paint quite a different picture! No matter how you view them, don’t forget to have your non-negotiable factors in mind when choosing travel insurance.

Let’s look at what some of the industry bodies say first.

Fairer Finance 2019 product ratings for AA Travel Insurance policies.

As you can see from the chart, Fairer Finance rates AA’s Silver and Gold policies very highly. However, the Bronze package only gets one star, meaning it is low in features and does not provide comprehensive cover.

Fairer Finance also collates data on customer reviews. Overall, AA Travel Insurance received 61% for its customer experience rating. This takes into account customer happiness, customer trust, complaints performance and transparency rating. This figure doesn’t sound overly impressive, but to put it in perspective, the top rating is 65% and the lowest is 36%. That puts AA right up there as a brand that customers trust.

  • Fairer Finance is an independent company that compares the quality of travel insurance policies. They score products out of one to five stars, based on features that are included as standard.
  • Defaqto is an independent financial information business. Its goal is to help consumers make better-informed decisions. They also rate travel insurance policies based on quality rather than price.

Again, AA’s Silver and Gold policies rated impressively, both getting the full five stars. The Bronze policy only received two stars though, implying that this policy has less to offer. The Silver policy is looking like great value for money at this stage, as it is cheaper than the Gold but also offers an excellent level of cover.

Now customer reviews. Like we mentioned before, customers who left reviews online weren’t exactly as satisfied.

Of the 253 customers who left a review on TrustPilot, 90% of customers gave AA Insurance one star (bad rating). Be aware though, this is not just for travel insurance but other AA Insurance products too and the majority were related to car insurance.

Review Centre has a section dedicated to AA Travel Insurance so gives us a more accurate depiction. There were 57 reviews and the average score was 1.7/5 stars.

Paid all my medical expenses without any quibbles. A happy customer Awful service, long telephone hold queues, no resolution. A disgruntled customer

Based on these customer reviews, it would seem the customer service may not be up to scratch. We think you should always weigh up the customer and industry professional reviews, along with the actual benefits of the policy. Before we get into the nitty-gritty details of the policy, we have made this comprehensive guide on how to select travel insurance, if you are new to this.

AA Travel Insurance Policy Types and Details

AA Travel Insurance offers the two standard travel insurance policy types:

  • Single Trip Insurance - when we ran a quote on the AA website, the maximum period of time it would allow for a single trip was 185 days. This is a decent period of time and plenty of time for most holidays. If you are backpacking through Asia for longer though, you will find other insurers who provide cover for more than double this length of time. LV (page coming soon) offers up to 366 days.
  • Annual Multi-trip Insurance - AA offers you 30, 44 or 61 consecutive days of cover to choose from if you’re after an annual policy. We love this flexibility as you only pay for what you need. Most insurers only offer one standard period.

Here’s a snapshot of the key features that come as standard. Like most travel insurance policies these days, AA Travel Insurance offers three levels of cover: Bronze, Silver and Gold. Bronze offers the least amount of protection and Gold is the most comprehensive.

An AA member is someone who has AA breakdown cover. To qualify for any member benefits listed, you must be a member at the time of purchasing your travel insurance policy.

As part of these standard policies, AA covers many sports and activities, but as always, check the fine print. For example, hiking/trekking is only covered up to 2,500 metres above sea level.

This would be more than adequate in most situations, but 514 mountains in the Alps alone are above 2,500 metres. To us mere mortals, the sheer thought of 2.5 kilometres into the clouds sounds terrifying (and a little crazy, sorry!). To those of you grinning away and recalling your last epic summit, this advice is for you. It’s safe to say that you are likely fitter than most of us, and will probably scale a mountain higher than 2,500 metres at some stage in your holiday.

Moral of the story - with any adventure sport, always check the fine print or call the insurer to confirm what is covered and find out any possible exclusions. After all, you don’t want to be stuck on the top of a mountain waiting to be airlifted, wondering how much this private, unplanned flight is going to set you back!

One sport you won’t have to worry about with AA Travel Insurance is golf cover. If you’re looking for cheap golf cover, AA covers golf as standard in their policies! It doesn’t get any better than that! This offer is for everyone and not just AA members. As always, be sure to check the limits are enough to cover your equipment first.

We know that baggage can be one of the trickiest travel insurance items around. Luckily, it’s not quite as difficult as trying to remember your combo lock code for your suitcase. Some insurers make you add it on as an extra, others have a high maximum payout on the premium but then will pay next to nothing for a single item! It can be a little confusing, we know. Here’s a summary of AA inclusions. Great news! You don’t have to pay extra as it’s included in all policies:

The single article limit under baggage is the maximum AA will pay for any one item, pair, or set of items.

As we mentioned, the single item limit included in baggage can be tricky. AA pays £225 - £400 for each item. If you’re a gadget lover, this probably won’t cover your laptop (heaven forbid it leaves your side). To give you an idea of the industry average, usually single item limits are between £150-£500. This puts AA smack bang in the middle.

If you want to insure high-tech, expensive gadgets, there are specialist insurers that offer higher single item limits so shop around if you need. If you’re just taking your flip-flops and books, you should be sweet and fully covered with AA.

AA Travel Insurance policies have reasonably low excesses and a special deal if you are an AA member (see below).

If you are an AA member and you take out a Silver or Gold level of cover, no excess will be charged if you make a claim under any of the policy sections.

Optional Extra - Winter Sports

Here are the benefits you will receive with AA if you choose to add winter sports onto your single trip or annual multi-trip policy:

*No excess will be charged in the event of a claim, regardless of the policy level held or your AA member status.

If you want more help on choosing winter sports cover, why not check out our guide on the best ski travel insurance 2019?

Policy Prices

In order to compare prices, we have done a comparison for an annual policy including Europe for a 35-year-old woman with no pre-existing medical conditions.

The prices displayed are correct as of July, 2019 and are for guidance purposes only. Once you perform a quote, the figures provided will be the most up-to-date. Based on our example, here are our recommendations around the different levels of cover:

  • Bronze - considering the industry professionals did not rate this highly for features, we feel this is a little overpriced. It is more expensive than the average Bronze policy on the market and will only provide you with limited cover.
  • Silver - this feels like a winner to us. With Fairer Finance rating it four stars and Defaqto scoring it five stars, you will get a very good level of cover and it comes in cheaper than the average Silver policy.
  • Gold - this is rated the absolute highest quality by industry professionals so you can rest assured you will have comprehensive cover. It is more expensive than others on the market though, so you may want to shop around if you need the absolute maximum level of protection.

AA Travel Insurance Cancellation

AA will provide a full refund of your premium if you meet all of the following requirements:

  • You contact AA Travel Insurance within 14 days of receiving your Policy Documents.
  • You have not made, and do not intend to make a claim.
  • No incident has occurred which may mean you need to make a claim.
  • You have not travelled.

Otherwise, no refund of your premium will be made. You can still cancel your policy after 14 days but you will not receive a refund.

The average travel insurance premium this week is about the same compared to last week.

Understanding Travel Insurance

Travel insurance plans can cover both domestic and international travel. It could protect against something as familiar as delayed baggage (experts estimate 85% of lost luggage is returned to its owner within 48 hours) or as complicated as trip cancellation.

The benefits and limitations of travel insurance vary based on the company and plan. Above all else, this insurance coverage offers peace of mind.

Some credit cards offer a limited amount of travel insurance annually. If you need clarification on what your credit card offers, contact your provider to verify. These plans are great for cancellations and interruptions but may not cover more costly losses associated with unexpected medical expenses or emergency evacuations.

Individual travel insurance plans include this and much more. Travel insurance protects travelers from the unexpected when away from home.

Average Cost of Travel Insurance by Destination

Some countries are naturally more expensive travel destinations due to higher flight and lodging costs, which could increase travel insurance costs. Travel insurance will generally cost 5% to 10% of your total trip price, according to SquareMouth.

Here's how the prices stack up:

Source: SquareMouth

How Far in Advance to Purchase Travel Insurance

According to an AAA travel survey , 88% of travelers say that reimbursement after a trip cancellation is the most valuable benefit of trip insurance.

According to data gathered by SquareMouth in the last six months, travelers tend to purchase trip cancellation travel insurance 53 days before their trip. Meanwhile, travelers without trip cancellation insurance will buy a policy approximately 16 days before their trip. Regardless of when you buy, cancellation protection can kick in to protect you against the unexpected.

Average Cost of Travel Insurance by Age

A traveler's age is a significant factor in determining the cost of travel insurance. The older a traveler is, the higher travel insurance premiums are. For instance, a senior traveler may need more insurance for health-related emergencies than a millennial.

When calculating your travel insurance premium, travel insurance providers consider the likelihood of a medical emergency.

Travel Insurance Rate Tips

How much does travel insurance typically cost.

Travel insurance rates through most providers fall between 4% and 8% of the total trip cost. Like the cost of flights, cruises, etc., rates may vary substantially based on the season, your original location, your destination, and other factors. This week, the average cost of a policy was close to $300.

How can I save money on travel insurance?

To save money on travel insurance, tailor your policy to your specific needs and avoid unnecessary extras. You should also shop around to compare quotes from multiple insurers. Opting for an annual plan if you're a frequent traveler, checking existing coverages from other insurance policies or credit card benefits, and choosing a policy with a higher deductible can significantly lower your premiums. Always read the fine print to understand your coverage fully, ensuring you don't pay for redundant or irrelevant features.

Where are the cheapest places to buy travel insurance?

To find affordable travel insurance, consider using online comparison websites like SquareMouth or InsureMyTrip to see rates from various providers. Other ways to save include purchasing directly from insurance companies, exploring package deals from travel agencies or airlines, utilizing included coverage from credit card benefits, and checking for discounts through membership organizations such as AAA or AARP.
