The 4000-passenger ship Liberty OTS' first drydock was in 2011. During the refit, the boat gained new features (introduced on Oasis OTS ) including a large stage shows, Royal Nursery, an outdoor movie screen, a cupcake bakery. New technology know-how was placed in the form of interactive HDTVs and digital deck plan systems, located throughout the Liberty to help guests navigate by using LCD touch-screens for customized directions, ship factoids and real-time updates.

Liberty OTS also boasts all the Freedom-class favorites, including popular onshore brands like Johnny Rockets and Ben and Jerry's, cruising's only ice rink, a rock-climbing wall, the novel "Promenade" concept and Boleros Latin lounge.

At the beginning of 2016 Royal Caribbean's cruise ship, Liberty of the Seas has undergone an extensive drydock revitalization. Get a behind-the-scenes look at the new features to be constructed, such as the Splashaway Bay waterpark, The Perfect Storm water slides, new restaurants and bar dining options.

Liberty Of The Seas Wiki

Liberty OTS is fleet's 2nd Freedom-Class liner, with sisterships Freedom  and  Independence . Liberty was built in 2007 by Aker Finnyards Shipyard (Turku, Finland). This shipyard was later acquired by STX Europe (a subsidiary of the South Korean multinational STX Corporation). Ship's godmother was Donnalea Madeley. She was elected from about 2500 female travel agents, who had shown fondness of social causes. Donnalea Madeley is from Ontario, and the first travel agent to win such a position (usually given to VIPs). The christening ceremony was held at PortMiami  on May 18, 2007.

The inaugural cruise (maiden voyage) was a 7-day Caribbean itinerary starting on May 19. Liberty OTS had some special pre-inaugural cruises before the liner arrived in Miami. The first was the Transatlantic crossing ( Southampton  to  NYC New ), the second - repositioning from NYC to Miami (visiting several US East Coast ports).

Like all newly refurbished RCI ships, Liberty offered the DreamWorks Experience (2011-2018). Liberty OTS is an "Art Nouveau'" decorated modern cruise liner. Passengers will be amazed by the mixing coloured light projections on broken or hanging canvasses created by the unique digital art celebrity Miguel Chevalier. All the rest is totally Royal Caribbean - the feature entertainment options with great shows, grand Vegas-style productions, the "ice-skating and rock-climbing", numerous themed bars and lounges, modern facilities to spend quality time on board.

Liberty OTS refurbishment 2016 review

During ship’s drydock 2016 refurbishment (January 10 - February 6), Royal Caribbean added a group of 3 waterslides on Deck 13 aft (near the Flowrider simulator). The Aqua Park (lido deck 11) has a new kids-only water playground area called “Splashaway Bay”.

Liberty OTS is the first Freedom-class RCI ship with waterslides. The first ever Royal Caribbean ship originally built with slides is  Harmony of the Seas  (launched 2016) with a total of 4 water slides.

The list of deck plan changes after the 2016 drydock refurbishment includes:

  • (On deck 2) 3 inside cabins were removed (numbers 2405, 2403, 2401).
  • (On deck 3) the Catacombs (218-seats Disco Nightclub, level 1) was replaced with 19 new interior cabins. Also here, 4 new interior cabins were added near the Art Gallery (starboard). Both lounges Bernini (portside) and Velasquez (starboard) were replaced with 10 new oceanview staterooms. Dining Room restaurant was renamed from Rembrandt to “Main Dining Room” (level 1).
  • (On deck 4) the Catacombs disco (level 2) was replaced by the Sabor Modern Mexican (restaurant). Also here, Dining Room restaurant was renamed from Michelangelo to “Main Dining Room” (level 2).
  • (On Promenade deck 5) the show lounge was renamed from “The Sphynx” to “Star Lounge”. Also here, the Champagne Bar (wine bar) was replaced by R-Bar. Dining Room restaurant was renamed from Botticelli to “Main Dining Room” (level 3). Cupcake Cupboard (bakery) was added.
  • (On deck 6) a new inside cabin was added forward (number 6137).
  • (On deck 7) 5 new inside cabins were added, 4 of which in the place of the Library (removed to deck 9).
  • (On deck 9) a new inside cabin was added forward (number 9237). Also here were added Library and Card Room, while the Concierge Club was removed.
  • (On Lido deck 11) the H2O Zone was replaced by the new Splashaway Bay (water park with slides). Also here, the Portofino restaurant was replaced by “Giovanni’s Table” (Italian restaurant).
  • (On Spa deck 12 forward) around the ShipShape Spa, new cabins were added in categories Q-Inside, Panoramic Oceanview (PF-Family Panoramic, P1-Larger, P2-Panoramic) and E2-Spa Balcony.
  • (On deck 13) Liberty Dunes (9-hole mini golf course with Golf Simulator) was replaced with the Perfect Storm waterslides (Cyclone, Typhoon). Also here, the Wipe Out! (20-seats burger bar) was replaced with the “Tidal Wave” slide (Boomerang-type). While the waterslide structure was ready after the ship’s refurbishment, its opening was re-scheduled for June 2016 due to some initial design flaws discovered after the slide’s installation. The design was altered by adding padding for the impact areas of the slide.
  • (On deck 14) both portside multipurpose rooms – Cloud Nine (24-seats) and Seven Hearts (33-seats) were replaced with Suite Lounge.
  • Internet speed was upgraded (to Voom).

During drydock 2016, a total of 89 new cruise cabins were added. Among those, 26 are Panoramic ocean views (with floor-ceiling windows facing forward) on deck 12.

Liberty Of The Seas refurbishment 2011 review

The list of deckplan changes after drydock 2011 included:

  • All cruise accommodations were renovated.
  • “DreamWorks Experience” (Walt Disney themed entertainment program) was implemented.
  • The Royal Caribbean’s signature Nursery was added on deck 12.
  • On Lido Deck 11 (in the main pool area) a huge movie screen (outdoor theatre) was installed.
  • Vintages (wine bar) was upgraded.
  • BRITTO Art Gallery was added on deck 3.

The Theatre Lounge's programming was upgraded with complimentary DreamWorks 3D movies and a new Broadway musical production (“Saturday Night Fever”).

Cruise lines changing itineraries as Hurricane Beryl charges through Caribbean

With ports on both sides of the state, Florida is a popular destination for those planning a cruise.

Those plans are being disrupted this week after Hurricane Beryl made landfall on Carriacou Island Monday as a powerful Category 4 storm with 150-mph winds.

➤  Track Hurricane Beryl

The hurricane has grown since then, and is now at Category 5 hurricane with 165-mph winds as it moves west across the Caribbean Sea . Life-threatening winds and storm surge are expected to impact Jamaica by Wednesday.

Here's what you should know if you're scheduled to take a cruise.

Cruisemapper shows few cruise ships in Caribbean as Hurricane Beryl continues westward path

There were a few cruise ships in the Caribbean Sea early Tuesday, with most only going as far south as Jamaica and most concentrated along the Mexican coast, according to cruisemapper.com.

➤ Interactive map : See the latest on cruise ship locations

A few ships were shown in Puerto Rico and the British Virgin Islands.

Most ships were concentrated around the Bahamas and off the east coast of Florida.

Beryl is expected to bring life-threatening winds and storm surge to Jamaica Wednesday as it moves quickly west across the Caribbean.

Royal Caribbean Blog announces changes to itineraries because of Hurricane Beryl

▶  Royal Caribbean had three ships in the southeastern Caribbean as of July 1 and announced it was changing cruise ship itineraries because of Hurricane Beryl, according to Royal Caribbean Blog.

Icon of the Seas, Wonder of the Seas, and Harmony of the Seas have all changed itineraries due to the hurricane, according to the website.

Royal Caribbean's newest and largest ship — Icon of the Seas — departed from Miami, June 29, days before Beryl hit the eastern Caribbean. The ship was scheduled to visit St. Maarten and St. Thomas, among other locations in the eastern Caribbean. Instead it will visit Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico. Cruisemapper.com showed the ship off Cozumel Tuesday morning.

Royal Caribbean notified passengers via email of the itinerary change intended to avoid strong winds and high waves on the sea.

Wonder of the Seas, which left Port Canaveral June 30, will skip two ports and call on Nassau, Bahamas, the blog announced. Tuesday morning, cruisemapper showed the ship between Key West and Cuba.

“We’re terribly sorry for the last-minute change caused by the weather, your safety is our top priority," the letter read.

"Please know, being onboard is one of the safest places because we are faster and can move out of the way of any inclement weather."

Norwegian Cruise Line changes stops to avoid eastern Caribbean

▶  Norwegian Cruise Line  altered nearly the entire itinerary for a week-long sailing on its Norwegian Breakaway ship that departed from Miami on Sunday. The line canceled stops in Honduras, Harvest Caye in Belize, and Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico, according to a letter sent to guests the line shared with USA TODAY. The ship will instead visit Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, St. Thomas, Tortola, and Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas instead.

“While we share your disappointment, these modifications were made with great consideration as your safety, and that of our crew, is always our number one priority,” the letter said.

The line similarly changed a week-long sailing aboard Norwegian Jade that left Port Canaveral on Saturday, replacing planned calls in Falmouth, Jamaica, Grand Cayman and Cozumel with San Juan, Puerto Rico, Tortola and Puerto Plata.

Fire breaks out on Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas, cruise ship loses power

what cruise line is liberty of the seas

A fire broke out on Royal Caribbean International’s Icon of the Seas cruise ship on Tuesday.

The ship also experienced a brief loss of power, according to Nathaniel Derrenbacher, a spokesperson for the line’s parent company, Royal Caribbean Group . The ship was docked in Costa Maya, Mexico, at the time.

There were no injuries and the small fire – which was isolated to a crew area – was quickly extinguished. The ship’s backup power was activated immediately, and the main power systems were restored.

Derrenbacher did not have additional information on where the fire occurred or how long the power outage lasted.

The vessel’s itinerary was not impacted. Icon, the biggest cruise ship in the world , is currently sailing a week-long Western Caribbean cruise that departed from Miami, Florida on Saturday, according to CruiseMapper . The ship is scheduled to visit Cozumel on Wednesday.

The news comes after a fire occurred in the exhaust funnel of Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Freedom ship in March, the second such fire on the vessel in less than two years.

A luxury Viking cruise ship helped scientists encounter the rarely-seen giant phantom jellyfish

  • Tourists aboard a submersible saw the rare giant phantom jellyfish during a Viking cruise.
  • Viking Octantis is a luxury ship that travels to Antarctica and often has researchers aboard.
  • Viking published its first scientific paper in 2023 based on the jellyfish encounters.

Insider Today

Not so long ago, giant phantom jellyfish were an extremely rare sight, with fewer than 130 known sightings. Then tourists aboard personal submersibles started spotting them near the Antarctic Peninsula.

The submersible rides were part of a Viking Expedition trip. Viking Octantis, a luxury cruise vessel, takes thousands of passengers each year through the icy waters of the Southern Ocean to glimpse penguins, seals, and other wildlife.

All the majestic scenery and cruise ship amenities come with a healthy dose of science and the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge Antarctic research . Trips start at $13,000 for a 13-day cruise.

Searching the deep seas for phantom jellyfish

While scientists started using personal submersibles with increasing frequency in the 1990s and 2000s, Antarctic waters are generally still difficult and expensive to get to. Hopping in one right from Viking's cruise ship makes things a little easier.

And it's novel enough that every trip might lead to something unexpected. "The exciting thing is we can go into the water and say there's a very real chance we might find something that is genuinely new ," Damon Stanwell-Smith, Viking's head of science and sustainability told Business Insider.

Viking's Octantis has two, six-passenger submersibles , which take guests down to depths of nearly 1,000 feet.

It was during three such trips in early 2022 that Viking tourists snapped pictures and took video of the giant phantom jellyfish. A year later, other guests had spotted a handful more, National Geographic reported .

Related stories

First described in 1910, the jellyfish has an umbrella-like body with four ribbony arms, which help trap prey and can grow to over 33 feet each.

Finding the jellyfish has proven difficult in the past, and many mysteries remain about its habits. While they're typically observed in deep water , all the Viking sightings were at less than 1,000 feet deep.

Based on the guests' jellyfish encounters, the ship's researchers published a scientific paper in 2023 in the peer-reviewed journal Polar Research discussing how submersibles can help lead to breakthroughs in Antarctica's under-studied waters .

An expedition ship built for luxury and discovery

In addition to hangers built for subs, the Octantis and its sister ship, Polaris, were designed for many other types of science. There are 380-square-foot laboratories with equipment sophisticated enough for environmental DNA testing .

Stanwell-Smit said this capability is cutting-edge for any research vessel, not a cruise ship. "This is incredibly novel," he said. It lets researchers genetically sequence biological samples right away instead of waiting months for another laboratory to do the work.

The cruise line's commitment to science attracts a certain kind of tourist, which Stanwell-Smith refers to as the "retired professor demographic."

The expedition ships cater to these educated, curious guests by letting them participate in research alongside the nine scientists on every voyage, whether to Antarctica or through the US's Great Lakes.

Guests can listen to expert lectures from the ships' resident wildlife naturalists or provide citizen scientist data about the birds they spot. Or they can get involved in what Stanwell-Smith calls "real science" by assisting on-board geochemists or oceanographers with research .

They can take a sample of phytoplankton, watch a weather balloon launch, or prepare a "bait popsicle" to help with a species-monitoring project.

Prepping the smelly bait is one of the expedition ships' most popular activities, Stanwell-Smith said. "There's a subset of our guests who want to roll up their sleeves, put a lab coat on, and just get really messy," he said.

For those who weren't experts before, Stanwell-Smith thinks the cruise will help them embrace the idea of loving what you know and protecting what you love.

"There is something very visceral about feeling you know something better by having actively done it rather than just watch somebody else or seen it on the screen," he said.

Plus, they might witness something completely new that gets written up in a scientific journal.

Watch: I went shark diving in the middle of Denver, Colorado. It was surreal to see the massive animals in my landlocked state.
