Wing Expands Drone Delivery Service in Dallas-Fort Worth

Wing , a drone delivery company and part of Alphabet, is broadening its service area in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, increasing accessibility for customers. Initially introduced to the region in 2022, the company collaborates with Walmart to offer swift drone delivery directly from stores to homes.

As of April 29, 2024, the service will be available from four Walmart locations: 9101 N Tarrant Parkway and 6401 NE Loop 820 in North Richland Hills, with the latter commencing operations on the same day; 8555 Preston Road in Frisco; and 801 W Main Street in Lewisville.

“We’ve been steadily expanding to additional stores ever since, as part of Walmart’s initiative to offer drone delivery to up to 75% of the DFW population,” said a Wing release. This expansion is part of a broader effort to provide innovative and efficient delivery solutions to a larger customer base.

Customers can place orders through the Wing Drone Delivery app, choosing from thousands of available items including groceries, snacks, and over-the-counter medicines. Orders are handled by Walmart employees who prepare and attach the packages to drones. These drones then deliver the items directly to a specified location on the customer’s property, using a tether system to lower packages safely.

The expansion of Wing’s drone delivery service aims to enhance the shopping experience by providing a fast, safe, and sustainable delivery option, reflecting the evolving landscape of logistics and customer service in the metroplex. Customers can check their delivery eligibility by entering their address on Wing’s dedicated webpage.

New Report Reveals Travel Companies Falling Behind Competitors On Cage-Free Eggs

A report from the Open Wing Alliance calls out Best Western, Millennium and Copthorne Hotels, Capella Hotel Group, and others for lack of cage-free transparency.

( New York, NY - February 19, 2024 ) — Today, the Open Wing Alliance (OWA) , a global coalition of 100 organizations in 72 countries on six continents, releases a new animal welfare report: Fair and Fowl: Global Travel Edition . The report examines ethical discrepancies within the hospitality sector, exposing companies that, despite pledging to source 100% cage-free eggs in their supply chains in recent years, are refusing to disclose progress on their commitments. The report highlights the importance of corporate transparency and holding companies accountable for the welfare of animals in their supply chains.

Among the hospitality laggards called out in the report are Best Western, Capella Hotel Group, and Millennium and Copthorne Hotels for refusing to provide public updates on their cage-free global pledges. As consumers increasingly prioritize ethical practices, these companies are facing a profit-threatening backlash for perceived deception on animal welfare claims from consumers.

“Pressure from both the public and investors to end cruel practices in animal agriculture has led to the implementation of cage-free egg policies worldwide,” says Hannah Surowinski, Global Corporate Relations Manager, the Open Wing Alliance. “Today’s tourists are seeking out more ethical travel experiences, and part of that includes expecting a higher standard of animal welfare this report calls out hospitality companies still refusing to report on their global and regional progress, calling into question their integrity and risking increased scrutiny and a loss of consumer trust due to a lack of accountability.”

As consumers demand ethical practices and corporate accountability, over 2,500 of the world’s largest corporations have committed to eradicating cages from their supply chains—nearly 1200 of those have already completed their cage-free transitions, including JetBlue and Motel One. “JetBlue has been proud to source 100% cage-free liquid and shell eggs since 2017, which is a result of working with business partners in our international network that share our value of high-quality ingredients and ethical business practices,” said Jayne O’Brien, JetBlue Head of Marketing and Loyalty. “Motel One is excited to partner with The Humane League on improving animal welfare. Across the group, we are proud to source 100 percent cage-free eggs, free-range at a minimum, for all of our products. In Germany, Austria, France and the Netherlands our eggs are 100% organic. We believe this is a crucial step towards a sustainable and ethical supply chain,” said Ann-Katrin Moitje, Purchasing Manager at Motel One. Natalie Elphicke, the MP for Dover, has defected to the Labour Party, it has just been announced.

She crossed the floor of the Commons shortly before Prime Minister's Questions began - the second Tory to do so in 10 days.

In a statement, she said "many things have changed" since she joined the Tories in 2019, and now "the modern Labour Party looks to the future".

Labour 'has changed out of all recognition'

She added: "When I was elected in 2019, the Conservative Party occupied the centre ground of British politics. The party was about building the future and making the most of the opportunities that lay ahead for our country. 

"Since then, many things have changed. The elected prime minister was ousted in a coup led by the unelected Rishi Sunak.

"Under Rishi Sunak, the Conservatives have become a byword for incompetence and division. 

"The centre ground has been abandoned and key pledges of the 2019 manifesto have been ditched."

She says Labour under Sir Keir Starmer has "changed out of all recognition" and its policies "can be trusted".

Ms Elphicke said she "carefully considered" the decision, adding: "We need to move on from the broken promises of Rishi Sunak’s tired and chaotic government."

It has been fewer than two years since Labour's shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves told Tory MP Natalie Elphicke to "f*** off" for criticising Marcus Rashford at the Euros.

Now they are colleagues.

Ms Elphicke crossed the floor of the House of Commons to join Labour ahead of Prime Minister's Questions, causing a stir on both sides of the House.

The Dover MP has long been critical of the Labour Party - especially on immigration - but she now says the party has "changed out of all recognition" and is trying to create "a Britain everyone can be a part of".

Me Elphicke added that the Conservatives "ousted" Boris Johnson in a "coup led by the unelected Rishi Sunak" - with the party now a "byword for incompetence and division".

So who is Natalie Elphicke, what are her policies, and why did she defect?

Kate Forbes being appointed Scotland's deputy first minister is an attempt from her new boss to "reset relations" within the SNP and the Scottish parliament, says our Scotland correspondent Connor Gillies .

John Swinney is putting his cabinet together after being formally sworn into the top job today, and Ms Forbes - who had been tipped to run against him in a leadership contest - is his number two ( see 13.35 post ).

Connor says she got almost half the vote in last year's leadership contest against the now former first minister Humza Yousaf.

"The party has been at odds ever since and there has not been a sense of togetherness, as John Swinney put it," adds Connor.

"The party has not been cohesive."

Connor says this looks like an "olive branch" to the more conservative wing of the SNP that Ms Forbes represents.

Mr Swinney became leader after Mr Yousaf fell out with the progressive Greens, who had been the SNP's coalition partners in government.

As we have reported, Natalie Elphicke today defected to the Labour Party in a move which appears to have shocked much of the Conservative bench.

The ex-Tory has already confirmed she will not run again for her seat in Dover at the next general election.

But Labour has now suggested that she could take on an unpaid role working on housing policy with Labour.

A spokesman for Sir Keir Starmer denied the ex-Tory MP was offered a peerage or job in return for her defection. 

"We have talked about her doing a role building on her experience in housing policy," the spokesman said.

It has also been re-confirmed that she will not stand for election in Dover, with Labour saying it will retain its existing candidate in her current seat.

A party spokesman said: "No, she isn't. We've already selected a Labour candidate in Dover and Deal - Mike Tapp."

Huw Merriman, the transport minister, has said he was "genuinely staggered" by Natalie Elphicke's decision to defect to the Labour party.

Mr Merriman told Sky News he was "really taken aback by Natalie's decision".

'I couldn't believe what I was seeing'

He said: "I think it's fair to say that she's always been on the right of our party, she's always been outspoken - particularly on immigration - and Labour's policies on immigration.

"She's written for the Daily Mail, the Express, and so for her to sit there with the Labour party just shows a real career, opportunist turn from her.

"But also that Labour don't seem to have a set of principles either.

"I was really, genuinely staggered by that.

"I couldn't believe what I was seeing."

Mr Merriman also said he is sorry for what moves like this do for politics, because "people will not trust politicians if we betray our principles when we look at the opinion polls".

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has urged Tory voters to follow defected MP Natalie Elphicke to his party.

Speaking in his parliamentary office, he said: "I'm delighted to welcome Natalie Elphicke to the Labour Party. 

"She's got a strong track record on issues such as housing, she's on the frontline when it comes to the crisis of small boats."

He says the Tory party "has changed" and "left the centre ground", and says his Labour has changed too to become "the party of the national interest, of country first, party second".

Asked if more Conservatives MPs could defect, he sidestepped the question.

He said: "I think there are very many Tory voters who genuinely feel that the party that they may have voted for - many, many times in some cases - is no longer the Tory party that they see.

"And I say to every Tory voter who feels that they want to be part of a national mission to change our country for the better that the project we've built here in this changed Labour Party is a project that I hope they would feel they could get behind."

John Swinney is forming his first cabinet after being confirmed as Scotland's new first minister.

He has chosen Kate Forbes as his deputy first minister.

As well as Ms Forbes, those seen entering Bute House for the cabinet appointments include Scottish wellbeing economy, energy and net zero secretary Mairi McAllan, transport secretary Fiona Hyslop, and health secretary Neil Gray. 

The Home Office has expelled a Russian defence attache as part of a series of measures against Moscow. 

James Cleverly said the measures come because of the "reckless and dangerous activities of the Russian government across Europe". 

"I can tell the House [of Commons] that we will expel the Russian defence attache who is an undeclared military intelligence officer," he said.

He then outlined other measures in the package. 

"We will remove diplomatic premises status from several Russian owned properties in the UK, including Seacocks House, a Russian owned-property in Sussex and the trade and defence section in Highgate, which we believe have been used for intelligence purposes. 

"And we are imposing new restrictions on Russian diplomatic visas, including capping the length of time Russian diplomats can spend in the UK."

Mr Cleverly ended with a strongly worded statement. 

"Our message to Russia is clear: Stop this illegal war. Withdraw your troops from Ukraine. Cease this malign activity."

Natalie Elphicke, who is standing down at the general election, has denied that she had been offered a peerage by Labour.

The former Tory MP for Dover defected to the opposition just before PMQs at lunchtime, but Labour has already selected a candidate for the seat when the election comes round.

She said: "What I've said that I will do and what I've been asked to do is to contribute in the area of housing, which has been a longstanding area of experience for me.

"It's absolutely vital that we build the homes the country needs because under Rishi Sunak we've seen housebuilding simply collapse in this last year.

"Going forward, it looks like it'll be another missed manifesto promise from the Conservatives - not 300,000 homes, but probably half of that number.

"So, I'm really pleased to be able to join the Labour Party, Labour has changed, and it will be building the homes our country needs."

Sir Keir Starmer has been photographed enjoying a cup of tea with former Conservative MP Natalie Elphicke, who has just defected to the Labour party.

Our deputy political editor Sam Coates says the defection of Conservative MP Natalie Elphicke to Labour is a "gutter punch".

He says this is a defection that was "absolutely not on the cards", adding: "There weren't any rumours."

Sam says this "will have hurt on a number of levels" for Rishi Sunak, because "when you look at Natalie Elphicke's career, you would have maybe even thought she was somebody who leaned a little more into the right of the party given her public pronouncements."

She had, for example, backed Liz Truss for Tory party leader.

"And yet here you have somebody who has chosen to endorse the Labour Party, and disavow the party that put her in parliament in the strongest possible terms."

Sam says that, clearly, feelings are strong within the Conservative party.

Opposed to the official response, he has heard another from a Conservative member.

 A comment said: "They really are taking the absolute... dregs."
