Travel Share, Travel Up, new features of WM

My first post, still on vacation... we went to the update "conversation" this week. There are some interesting new options - Travel Share, Travel Up, Panorama, but of course for 7,000 at $2.80/pt. I have a couple of questions - 1. Has anyone reviewed any of these new sites/options, thoughts? Travel Share - additional resort options for weekly cash payments and something about a week for 4,000 points, Travel Up - using points as cash to buy travel (rental car, hotel) Anyone else explored this? 2. I bought our 8,000 points as secondary points, which has some limitations, the buyup is offering to take all our points to the upgraded level. If I just buy more points on the secondary market, any drawbacks there? Why don't I just buy more points? Sorry, may need to be 2 posts, but I'll go with this. DH

So they want you to pay $19,000 for 7000 points. The few who have gotten travel up through a new $20,000 purchase have said that they might save a few hundred a year but that was about it. The reaction has been very underwhelming.  

A lot of owners feel Travel Share is a waste of money. Better off with RCI and II.  

I think the Salesperson was mixing Travelshare and RCI.

I only get involved when there is more money involved - LOL There was mention of an upgraded view into RCI (based on the buy up) as they were implying that there are 2 levels of RCI "access". It is possible they were speaking of RCI - there was mention of using it to get a week for 4,000 points on "hundreds of properties". So if I am hearing this correctly, if I add more Worldmark points by buying on the open market (which is how I have done most of our timeshares) I can do so, but some of the added access doesn't come with it (e.g., Travel Share) and our access is to the 90 Worldmark properties, unless we get into RCI - correct? Is worldmark travelshare worth it, travelshare rumors and misnomers.

“Hey Henri, I have been thinking of buying Travelshare through Worldmark by Wyndham and wondered if it’s worth paying 900% more over resale prices. What do you think?”

This week I received about 20 phone calls from people asking me this question. One client named Christine just left a two-hour sales presentation wondering if she and her husband had done the right thing by not purchasing Travelshare directly from the developer. Another couple did purchase 10,000 additional Travelshare credits for over $30,000 and called to find out what I thought.

If you are interested in Worldmark as a new owner or a current owner looking to upgrade, you have probably heard of Travelshare and wondered about the value of it. One of our clients was told at a sales presentation that unless they upgraded to Travelshare, VIP or Founders that they would be second class Worldmark owners. Another was told that they would no longer be able to stay at any new Worldmark resorts unless they purchased Travelshare (not true). There are countless Travelshare rumors and misnomers that one has a hard time knowing what is true or not. If you are in this camp, then I hope this article is helpful.

My Experience

First of all you need to know that I LOVE my Worldmark membership. I have been an owner for 20 years and book over 100,000 credits per year just for my family. I know, rough life :). I have vacationed at over 30 of the Worldmark by Wyndham resorts. In addition, I have exchanged my Worldmark credits into over 100 vacations through RCI and Interval International (II). By the way, ANY Worldmark owner (even without Travelshare) can exchange their Worldmark credits in RCI and II. Most people would say I’m an expert at using the Worldmark system and exchanging my credits.

What You Should Know

You also need to know something that is very important – I also own Travelshare. I purchased mine when it first came out in 2006. I purchased because I was told I would be able to use this Wyndham add-on to my Worldmark membership to travel to hundreds of additional places and be able to trade my credits for cruises, hotels, car rentals, airfare and other great merchandise. Maybe you’ve heard the same thing. Yet, with all the vacations I take, I have never booked even a single night with my Travelshare credits. You might think that out of the roughly 30,000 owners that have Travelshare that I would be one of the most active users of the program. Unfortunately, it’s not the case.

Why I haven’t Used the Travelshare Account I Spent so Much On

Well, first of all, of the 30 or so Wyndham resorts (not hundreds) that are available for Travelshare members, most of them have little or any inventory available. What most people don’t realize is that these resorts are owned by Wyndham owners who get first priority to book them. It’s only after all the best dates are taken that rooms are released for Worldmark by Wyndham Travelshare owners. I have never been able to find any good availability for myself, friends or family. Next, one of the biggest selling features about a Worldmark by Wyndham Travelshare membership is the ability to exchange your credits for cruises, hotels, car rentals, airfare and other merchandise. Every conversation this week included comments from people about these exciting opportunities. In each phone call, I listened and then asked this question, “What is the credit value assigned to these “benefits”? None of them had any idea. To me, this is the most important issue. If I’m going to trade my credits for something, I want to know what they are being valued at. Let’s take a step back and look at this financially. Every membership costs money to purchase. Plus every membership has yearly maintenance fees. You can see the current maintenance fee chart here . Just for example, let’s say that you have a 10,000 annual credit membership and are paying maintenance fees of $1,132.48. That means you are paying about 11.3 cents per credit in maintenance fees. Now when you exchange your Travelshare credits for cruises, hotels, car rentals, airfare and other merchandise how much are your credits monetized for? Well, from all my research and talking with clients the most we have seen is a value of 4.5 cents per credit. So, let’s say you want to trade your Travelshare credits for a flight that would cost $450 through any of the popular travel sites. If you call the Worldmark by Wyndham travel department, you will discover that they will charge you about 10,000 credits for $450 worth of “benefits”. Why would anyone do this? Why would you trade $1,132.48 worth of credits for $450 worth of flights? You have just lost about 70% of your value. For this reason, I would never exchange my credits for any Travelshare merchandise or other “benefits”. After I shared this train of thought with Lori she said, “I had never thought of it in those terms before.” Not only have I not been able to find any attractive Travelshare openings or thought it was a good value to exchange my credits for stuff, but there are three other reasons why I won’t be buying more Travelshare credits. The first is that Travelshare credits have fees IN ADDITION to the normal Worldmark maintenance fees. The next reason why I won’t be purchasing any more Travelshare credits is because Travelshare credits are not transferrable except to immediate family members. So if you ever want to sell your Travelshare membership to someone besides your closest family members, then the Travelshare feature is worth absolutely $0. Not only that, but the person who buys your membership can never have Travelshare on the credits you sold them. Most people are completely unaware of this aspect of Travelshare. One client I spoke with this week said to me, “You mean I paid $30,000 for Travelshare and the Travelshare part is worth absolutely $0 if I sold it to someone?” Yes, that’s correct. Can you imagine purchasing a car, house or other investment and not being able to sell it? Crazy. Lastly, Travelshare benefits can be changed or cancelled at any time. There is absolutely no guarantee that the program will continue.

Why It's Not Worth It

Is Travelshare worth paying about 900% more for than purchasing on the resale market? For me, it’s a resounding no. In fact, because of the almost impossible to find inventory, unfavorable exchange values for travel related items, extra dues, not being able to transfer it to non-family members and the chance it could change or be cancelled, I think that Travelshare is not worth anything at all. I really wish I had not purchased it. I am however very excited about the large Worldmark membership I own and will continue taking incredible vacations all over the world with my normal non-Travelshare Worldmark credits.  Recently, I vacationed in Seaside, Indio, Phoenix and Maui and I’m already excited for eight more weeks of resort living coming soon. She was told that by using this card that she would easily be able to pay all of her maintenance fees. Yet, what she was not told is that one must spend $5,000 just to receive $60 of cash rewards towards maintenance fees. With a 10,000 annual credit membership, Lori would need to spend over $60,000 to pay her maintenance fees on 10,000 annual credits. I have found this not to be a great value compared to many other cash rewards credit cards available today.

What’s different about a worldmark resale.

Many clients have asked, what is the difference between buying a WorldMark timeshare at a presentation and choosing to buy on the secondary resale market? WorldMark sells Annual Credits for about $2.00 per credit currently. On the resale market, you will be able pay somewhere around 30% of this figure , possibly even lower. Why is this?

At a presentation, it’s common for each attendee to receive a gift that is designed to entice them into sticking around long enough to hear a sales pitch. It’s estimated that it takes approximately 50-60% of the sales price of a retail timeshare to cover the marketing and sales costs incurred by the presentation model. An unfair side effect from this model is that the people who are pressured into the purchase, and buy without doing their homework, will pay all the expenses of the presentation model. These customers are forced to shoulder the expense of the gifts and other presentation costs that were given to the people that didn’t buy.

The benefit of buying affordably doesn’t only apply to your purchase. When buying resale, it’s also reasonable to expect that if you needed to sell, that you would forego taking the same huge loss in value that someone who purchased at a presentation would.

Travel-share

The travelshare program is a developer’s incentive membership that is designed to entice people to purchase at the presentation for a higher price than resale market value. As you can imagine, Wyndham has to offer some rebuttal to the question “Why would I pay 3x or more for a retail account, when I can buy an account from an existing owner?” The only thing they can really say is that if you buy resale, you will miss out on the travelshare program. So what are Travel-share’s benefits? What will paying 3 times more at a presentation be worth it’s feature? Read on to find out:

Fun Time Feature

The fun time feature is an extended Bonus Time program. All WorldMark ownerships, regardless of resale or retail, come with the regular bonus time program. Fun Time means:

Travelshare  – Rather than booking within 14 days, you can now book up to 25 days in advance, but it is more expensive at 6 cents per credit rather than 4.8 cents per credit and you are limited to 5 days per reservation.

Resale – We can offer One-Time-Use credits to supplement your account. Generally the credits will cost about 6-8 cents per credit, but you can book 13 months in advance, book full weeks and you can use as many weekends as you’d like.

Use of Credits for Airfare, Cruises and Car Rentals

Travelshare  – Wyndham will allow you to use any unused vacation credits toward other travel expenses, but the exchange rate is so unpreferrable, most owners will never elect to use these benefits. One example, is that a cruise averages 10,000-30,000 credits per person to book, which can be literally thousands of dollars of maintenance for a couple to go on a travelshare cruise. You are obligated to book through WorldMark and use their inventory.

Resale  – We will buy back any unused available credits at a higher rate than what WorldMark will offer and send you a check for the sale upon the transfer completing. We can then help you either use your free, included SFX Diamond Rewards memebership to book your dream cruise, or you can book with any other cruiseline, airline, use the check however you see fit.

Included RCI membership (included travelshare fees)

Travelshare  – Includes an RCI account that can be used to trade with other resorts. This memebership is not free, as you will have to pay a monthly travelshare fee. Wyndham owns RCI and has a vested interest into getting you to pay more for these benefits. Some owners will never use this trading feature, but still have to pay the fees involved and they are paid for the lifetime of the ownership, adding to maintenance liability.

Resale  – We will walk you through how to become an RCI member after your purchase. You will not pay any reoccurring costs to us or WorldMark to keep the membership active, but RCI does charge $89.00 per year to become a member, which works out to be cheaper than what the Travel-share dues will cost you.

Use of RCI affiliated resorts

Travelshare  – Wyndham offers access to affiliated resorts to those that purchase at full retail price.

Resale  – Access affiliated resorts and many more through your self-paid RCI membership.

Free Movie Rentals

Travelshare – Reatil accounts get this benefit on 20,000 Annual credits and above.

Resale – You would have to watch a few lifetimes of movie rentals to offset the price of paying full resale price for your ownership.

For instance, if a WorldMark Owner goes on five different WorldMark vacations over the year, they are covered on all their trips. If WorldMark credits are exchanged with an affiliate such as RCI, the Owner is covered for that trip as well. However, if the owner goes on a pleasure or business trip that is not booked through WorldMark or its affiliates, they are covered only for Roadside Assistance benefits (when 50 miles or more from home) and for Evacuation Medical Protection benefits (when 100 miles or more from home). The Travel Secure program is not intended to be a primary Medical expense policy, and does not take the place of medical or international travel insurance. • What is the price of WorldMark TravelSecure coverage? $59 USD per year.
• How does the owner receive verification of enrollment? The owner will receive the WorldMark TravelSecure documentation via e-mail or standard postal service in as little as two weeks after enrolling. Many services start the day following the owner's enrollment in the program.
• What is the WorldMark TravelSecure refund policy? Owners requesting cancellations from WorldMark TravelSecure are eligible to receive a full refund if the cancellation request is within 30 days of the enrollment date and no trips have been taken.
• What are the WorldMark TravelSecure contact numbers owners should use while on vacation? Call 1-866-816-2109, toll-free, within the United States or 603-328-1755, collect, from anywhere in the world.

WorldMark TravelSecure provides the following coverage to ensure your security and peace of mind*:

Travel Assistance Services

• Reservation assistance - WorldMark TravelSecure will provide assistance to re-book airline or car rental reservations.
• Pre-trip information - General information regarding inoculations, weather, travel, health, travel restrictions and special events for any destination worldwide.
• Translation and interpreters - Foreign language assistance provided over the phone, or up to one page submitted via fax. For example, if a doctor writes the owner a bill or prescription in Spanish, the owner can have it translated. Any costs for additional translation or interpreter assistance are the responsibility of the owner.
• Emergency cash advance assistance - In the event the owner loses their wallet and needs cash, WorldMark TravelSecure can arrange for money to be sent to the owner. The money and cost to conduct the transaction are billed to the owner.
• Replacement of lost traveling documents assistance - If the owner loses their traveling documents and cannot leave a country, WorldMark TravelSecure will help arrange for those documents to be replaced. Any costs are the responsibility of the owner.
• Emergency message forwarding assistance - If the owner is traveling and is unable to reach an employer, family member or traveling companion, WorldMark TravelSecure can forward a message via telephone to the intended party.
• Lost luggage assistance - WorldMark TravelSecure can assist in the tracking of luggage lost in transit.
• Legal referral - If an owner is on a covered trip and is arrested or having legal problems, WorldMark TravelSecure can arrange for an initial telephone consultation with an attorney without charge to the owner. If needed, the owner will be referred to an attorney in the appropriate geographic area. Fees and costs charged by the referred attorney will be the responsibility of the owner.

Medical Information & Assistance Services

• 24-hour nurse help line - WorldMark TravelSecure offers the services of a registered nurse to provide certain clinical assessment, education and general health information over the phone.
• Dispatch of medicine - When medically necessary, medicine can be dispatched when not locally available. Prior to shipment, the owner must guarantee the cost of medicine and shipping charges.
• Dispatch of physician or nurse - WorldMark TravelSecure can dispatch a physician or other health care professional to an owner's location to assist in determining the owner's medical condition and suitability to travel when necessary.
• Emergency medical evacuation - If an attending physician and an On Call International medical specialist agree that treatment is not available at the owner's hospital, WorldMark TravelSecure will arrange evacuation to the nearest hospital that can provide appropriate treatment. WorldMark TravelSecure will reserve the right to determine which hospital can provide that treatment. The cost of medical services will be paid by the traveler's own medical insurance. WorldMark TravelSecure will pay for the cost of transporting the owner, a cost typically not covered by most medical insurance policies. WorldMark TravelSecure will determine the method of transportation. The owner's family will be evacuated with the patient when appropriate, or WorldMark TravelSecure will assist the rest of the family in changing their return flight accordingly. There is a limit of $500,000 per policy and the owner must be traveling 100 miles or more away from home.
• Medical monitoring - The attending physician is responsible for delivering medical attention and making all medical decisions for the patient. The WorldMark TravelSecure program provides a United States-based doctor to monitor the hospitalized traveler's condition and the program can provide ongoing updates to the owner's family at their request. If needed, WorldMark TravelSecure may enlist the services of licensed consulting physicians, nurses and/ or other medical professionals with relevant areas of expertise to assist in monitoring the traveler's condition.
• Medical referrals - WorldMark TravelSecure will provide referrals to medical professionals in a given geographical area.
• Deposits and guarantees - In foreign countries, certain doctors and hospitals may require a deposit, advance or guaranteed payment before commencing treatment. In this event, WorldMark TravelSecure will assist by advancing these funds on behalf of the traveler to the medical provider. Any advances of funds on behalf of the traveler will be billed to traveler's credit card at the time of service.
• Return of minor children/Visit by family member - If a traveler is injured on a covered trip and there is a medical indication that the patient will be in the hospital for more than seven days, WorldMark TravelSecure can make and pay for all travel arrangements for minor children to be returned home, including a non-medical escort as needed. Additional and upon request, WorldMark TravelSecure can bring a person chosen by the injured traveler for a single visit to and from their bedside, if the owner was traveling alone. There is a limit of $2,500 per policy.
• Repatriation of deceased remains - In the event that a traveler dies while on a covered trip, their remains will be repatriated back to their home.
