You won’t believe how much Wyndham Clark surpassed his all-time biggest payday with his win at Wells Fargo

Winning your first PGA Tour title is a priceless experience, as an emotional Wyndham Clark conveyed to CBS’ Amanda Renner behind the 18th green at Quail Hollow Club moments after claiming the Wells Fargo Championship by four shots over Xander Schauffele.

Clark needed 134 PGA Tour starts to grab win No. 1, and the backstory of him grieving after the death of his mother to breast cancer shortly after he started college along with the worry that this day might never actually come made it easy to feel good for the 29-year-old Colorado native.

“It’s been a long five years to get to this point on tour,” Clark said after a final-round 68. “I thought I would have had one earlier, but it’s well worth the wait.

“There’s so much that goes into this. There are so many times I wanted to cry and break clubs … and I did break the clubs sometimes in this journey. To get to this point is so sweet. It’s just amazing to finally do this. You know my mom is obviously not here. I wish she was, but I know she’s watching … just very grateful.”

Yet while winning your first PGA Tour title might be priceless, the reward for winning—especially in this day and age of designated events—is anything but. Clark’s triumph—one in which he saw his two-shot overnight lead slip away after seven holes only for him to rally with five birdies in his next seven holes to seize control—earned him a hefty $3.6 million prize money payout from the $20 million overall purse.

Just how career changing a payday is that? Well, how about you consider the fact that Clark’s total earnings on the PGA Tour in the 133 previous starts before this week were $7,405,024. In other words, Clark just claimed nearly 50 percent of his entire career winnings on tour in four days.

Even more intriguing is the size of the prize money payout compared to Clark’s previous biggest payday on tour. Earlier this year, Clark finished T-10 at the WM Phoenix Open, a designated event that earned him $485,000. Clark’s triumph on Sunday in Charlotte was thus nearly seven times larger than his previous best payday as a pro golfer.

Wyndham Clark earns 1st PGA Tour win at Wells Fargo Championship

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Wyndham Clark tried to pull his hat over his eyes with both hands as he struggled to hold back tears on the 18th green at Quail Hollow Club after winning his first PGA Tour event at the Wells Fargo Championship.

The long, agonizing wait that included days on tour when he wanted to "break some clubs" were over.

It was time to celebrate.

"I'm a little choked up," Clark said on the green. "It's been a long five years [on tour] to get to this point. I thought I would have won one earlier, but it is well worth the wait."

Clark shot 68 on Sunday for a four-shot victory over Xander Schauffele .

He finished the tournament at 19-under 265, the second-lowest score in relation to par in tournament history behind only three-time champion Rory McIlroy's 21-under 267 in 2015 when par for the course was 72.

Schauffele had accuracy issues with his driver Sunday and shot 70, finishing at 15 under.

Tyrrell Hatton and Harry English finished tied for third at 12 under, one shot better than Tommy Fleetwood and Adam Scott . Defending champion Max Homa shot 70 on Sunday and tied for ninth at 9-under 275.

"There are so many times that I wanted to cry and break clubs -- and I did break clubs at times -- in this journey," Clark said. "But to get to this point is so sweet. It is just amazing to finally do this."

"To go and put that round of 63 together [Saturday] and finish at 19 under is a fantastic effort," Hatton said. "Yeah, he deserves to be holding that trophy."

Clark's victory didn't come easy -- perhaps fitting for his career.

The world's 80th-ranked player opened the final round with a two-shot lead, surrendered it to Schauffele after seven holes and then stormed back to win after playing the final 11 holes in 4 under.

Despite never having won on tour before, there were signs that Clark was due. He'd finished in the top six in three of the past five tournaments he'd entered, including a third-place finish at the Zurich Classic last month.

He showed the poise of a champion after a rough start.

Clark pulled his tee shot left on No. 1 over the cart path, leaving him a difficult approach shot leading to a bogey. Schauffele pulled into the lead with birdies at Nos. 3 and 7 and it looked like Clark, who was struggling just to make birdie over the first six holes, might collapse under the pressure of trying to win his first tournament.

"My caddie [John Ellis] kept preaching to me that it's going to be challenging and get your mind wrapped around it," Clark said.

The momentum changed on the eighth hole.

Clark chipped to within 4 feet and rolled in a short birdie putt to pull back into a tie and then took the lead for good at the turn when Schauffele's par putt lipped out on No. 9.

Schauffele started struggling with his driver, missing four straight fairways. Clark kept the pressure on sinking birdie putts at No. 10 and 12 sandwiched in between a Schauffele bogey on No. 11, pushing the lead to four strokes with six holes left to play.

Clark matched Schauffele's birdies at the 14th and 15th holes to maintain a four-shot edge heading into the difficult closing three holes known as the Green Mile. From there, the only real drama was whether he'd break McIlroy's tournament record.

But Clark played the final three holes in 1 over, bogeying the 18th after finding a fairway bunker.

"I didn't hit it as well and didn't make as many putts as maybe I did the day before, but mentally I was super strong," Clark said. "I didn't start out great. I was kind of shaky. I think in years past I might have folded. But this time I stayed patient and hung in there and caught fire on the back nine."

Schauffele said he wished he could have put more pressure on Clark, but that he was just flat Sunday.

"I started leaking oil," Schauffele said.

Clark dedicated the win to his mother, who got him into golf and later died of breast cancer when he was 19 years old. He contemplated giving up the game after her death but didn't.

"I'm glad I stuck it out," Clark said.

McIlroy, playing for the first time since missing the cut at the Masters, played the final three rounds in 3-over par, including a 72 on Sunday to finish even par for the tournament.

He had nine top-10 finishes in 11 starts, including wins in 2010, 2015 and 2021 at Quail Hollow, but this was his worst outing since missing the cut 12 years ago.

McIlroy declined to speak to reporters after his final round.

Wyndham Clark has been declared the winner of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am after extensive wind and rain forced the PGA Tour to cancel the final day of play.

The 30-year-old American was six shots behind before hitting a course record 12-under-par 60 on Saturday to finish on 17 under, one ahead of Sweden's Ludvig Åberg.

Matthieu Pavon, the winner of last week's Farmers Insurance Open, claimed third place on 15 under, with Thomas Detry and Mark Hubbard a further shot back in tied-fourth.

World No 1 Scottie Scheffler, Justin Thomas, Jason Day and Tom Hoge finished four shots back in a share of fifth place.

Strong wind and rain had postponed the final round to Monday, but a statement from the PGA Tour late on Sunday said after consulting the Monterey County emergency authorities and out of an "abundance of caution" for spectators and players, there would be no further play.

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — It doesn’t faze Wyndham Clark that no player has won in his Masters debut since Fuzzy Zoeller 45 years ago.

“Stats like that are meant to be broken,” Clark said.

Of course, Clark is not your ordinary Masters newcomer.

He has the rare distinction of playing in his first Masters as the U.S. Open champion , not to mention being one of the hottest players on the PGA Tour.

Clark followed up two PGA Tour victories last year by winning at Pebble Beach in February and finishing second at the Arnold Palmer Invitational Pro-Am and The Players Championship, where he finished one shot behind world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler in a three-way tie.

Ranked fourth in the world, Clark enters this tournament with a 40-1 shot to win, according to FanDuel Sportsbook .

While Clark acknowledged that winning as a Masters rookie would be a tall task, he’s quick to add that few could have predicted he would win the U.S. Open last summer.

“So I like my chances,” he said.

Clark isn’t the only notable newcomer playing this week at Augusta National.

Ludvig Aberg of Sweden, ranked No. 9 in the world, is a popular pick despite never testing the slippery greens at Augusta National. He won a PGA Tour event as a rookie and had two wins in foursomes at the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome, helping the Europeans dominate .

Scottie Scheffler hits from the fairway on the 15th hole during the third round of the RBC Heritage golf tournament, Saturday, April 20, 2024, in Hilton Head Island, S.C. (AP Photo/Chris Carlson)

And don’t forget about Alabama sophomore Nick Dunlap, who stunned the golf world in January by becoming the first amateur to win a PGA Tour event in 33 years when he captured The American Express.

He’s since turned pro and is ready to cash in at the Masters.

If you’re looking for a sleeper, there’s also Dean Shipley, who received an automatic invitation to the Masters by finishing runner-up in the 2023 U.S. Amateur, where he lost to Dunlap 4 and 3.

“It’s a tricky balance because obviously I’m feeling all the first-time feelings that everyone’s feeling, but I’m also trying to be OK with all those things coming at me,” Aberg said of his Masters debut. “I guess all I’m trying to do is just embrace all the nerves and all the excitement that I feel, and at the same time know my capabilities and know that that’s probably going to be good enough to compete.”

All 20 newcomers have been given an opportunity to play practice rounds at Augusta National in the weeks leading up the tournament. Some even played a round or two here in college.

So it won’t be like they’re playing Amen Corner for the first time.

Clark has played 72 holes leading up to Thursday’s first round, so there is some familiarity with the undulations of the greens.

But he knows the course becomes a whole different beast this week.

“Come tournament week, just how firm and fast the greens are versus when you come here six, eight weeks ago and it’s nice and receptive,” Clark said. “That’s a little bit of a difference.”

Clark said he’s approaching this tournament just like any other — trying to have fun, while realizing he’s living his childhood dream of playing the Masters.

This was his favorite tournament to watch growing up.

His father attended in 2005, the year Tiger Woods made that remarkable chip in on the 16th hole en route to his fourth green jacket. Clark watched that at home on television, looking for his dad in the crowd.

Whether Clark or another newcomer can pull off a similar bit of magic amid the towering pines and flowering azaleas and win the Masters remains to be seen.

But he wouldn’t be shocked if it happens.

“If it’s not me this week it could be Ludvig or someone else that does it,” Clark said. “I think the guys that are playing professional golf now have gotten so good, and I don’t think we really listen to all of that. We just see the golf ball and put it where we want to put it and wherever the ball ends up, we go and hit it again and try to win a golf tournament.”

U.S. Open - Final Round, Wyndham Clark

Wyndham Clark is gearing up for what will be one of the biggest weeks of his life.

Clark is one of 89 men competing at Augusta National in the 88th Masters Tournament later this week. He will be looking for his second major championship in less than a year after capturing the U.S. Open last June.

Before arriving at Augusta, Clark joined SB Nation’s Playing Through for an interview and detailed a wide range of topics, including how his back is feeling, his involvement with SoFi and the TGL, as well as the evolution of his mental game.

Of course, he also provided keen insight into his approach to being a rookie at Augusta National. That has notoriously been a tough spot for anyone.

Clark’s Back Injury a “Just a Muscle Thing”

Clark was playing incredible golf a few weeks ago. He finished runner up to World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler in back-to-back weeks at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players, respectively.

He was heartbreakingly close to forcing a playoff in the latter. An unreal lip-out on 18 left Clark gutted .

Nevertheless, his game was in top form contending with the world’s best.

A day later, Clark injured his back heading into the Texas Children’s Houston Open. He did not play quite as well that weekend. Thankfully, the back injury does not appear as though it will impact him at The Masters .

“I don’t know if you have ever thrown your back out... I was in the gym. I didn’t have anything [wrong] going into the workout. Just out of nowhere it went out. It is just a muscle thing,” Clark said to Playing Through.

“It’s nothing career [threatening]... it sucked it happened Monday of a tournament week. But the great thing was, I was able to play. As the tournament went on, it got better and better.

Texas Children’s Houston Open - Round Three, Wyndham Clark

“As of right now, honestly, I don’t feel anything.”

That sentiment is furthered by his final round 4-under 68 in Houston. That is surely a relief for Clark and all golf fans.

Wyndham’s Role with TGL, SoFi

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s virtual golf league, TGL, is set to debut in January of 2025. It will be held at the SoFi Center on the Palm Beach State College campus.

SoFi is one of the world’s largest online banks, providing financial products including student loan refinancing, mortgages, personal loans, and banking through both mobile app and desktop interfaces.

They are also one of the key partners in helping develop the groundbreaking golf league.

Clark, while playing the Pebble Beach Pro-Am with SoFi CEO Anthony Noto, learned of shared goals and ideals through within the sport of golf. That led to a blossoming relationship landing him an ambassador role and his participation in the virtual golf league.

“We played the first two days together and had a great time. As we progressed through those two days, I really learned a lot about SoFi and what they value and how they go about their business.

“They approached me to help represent the brand and I felt comfortable doing that because of what I learned about the company upon doing my due diligence... I am really excited to be a part of the brand!”

AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am - Round Three, Wyndham Clark

He joins a couple other superstar athletes partnering with SoFi, namely Chargers QB Justin Herbert and Celtics SF Jayson Tatum.

“Me being an Oregon Duck and Justin Herbert is a Duck, and Tatum is an amazing basketball player. To be in that group is amazing and help golf growing so much,” Clark said excitedly.

Indeed, SoFi is doing their part helping the game of golf grow to a new, wider and more diverse audience.

The Masters: A Rookie Can Win

Clark is one of 17 rookies in this year’s Masters field.

That generally has not been a great place to be for professional golfers. Only three times in the history of the tournament has a first-timer won. The first two were the first two years of the event in 1934 and 1935.

The only other time was when Fuzzy Zoeller accomplished the feat in 1979.

Yet, Clark has no fear of being a newbie at Augusta National; because he isn’t.

“I think if I played it [Augusta National] cold turkey, I would be at a large disadvantage. But I have played it a total of four times prior to the week of Augusta,” said Clark.

He then made a great point that’s hard to argue as to why he has a shot this week.

“I feel like I have a high golf IQ. Typically we only get to see a golf course a couple times before we tee it up. At the U.S. Open, I only saw it one time before the week. I played nine holes, then nine holes [of practice], and then went and won the tournament.”

The 30-year-old rising star has the ultimate confidence that he can get it done once again.

Clark’s Cerebral Shift

If you have followed Wyndham Clark’s professional career, then you likely have noticed a massive shift.

Prior to 2023, the reigning U.S. Open champion struggled with consistency. He would follow up a solid tournament with a poor showing, a strong round with a subpar one, and even on the micro level, a birdie with a bogey.

That is an element Clark was quite candid about.

“That is something that I struggled the most with prior to this last year and a half. The bounce back ability and to handle the adversity... when you make bogeys or doubles, I used to follow those bogeys and doubles with more bogeys,” Clark admitted.

All of that changed last season.

“I started working with my sports psychologist and working on my self-talk. I created the mentality that it doesn’t matter what just happened, I know I can bounce right back and make birdie. That is something we specifically worked on.”

“If there is any stat that I look at and is a goal... the only result goal I focus on is that bounce back stat.”

The proof is in the pudding, too.

Clark was outside the top 100 in bounce back rate in 2022. He implemented the new strategies that were detailed in Netflix’s Full Swing Season 2 , and improved drastically.

Last year, the three-time PGA Tour winner finished the season in the top 10 in bounce back rate. He’s back at it again this year as well.

To put that into context, look no further than his play at the Arnold Palmer Invitational .

Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard - Final Round, Wyndham Clark

During the third round, he was chasing Scottie Scheffler and closed his front nine with a double bogey. The old Clark might have folded and bogeyed the next.

Instead, he went birdie, birdie, eagle to climb right back into contention.

He did the same thing on Sunday. After his second bogey of the day on four, he picked up two straight birdies on five and six. Ultimately, he finished just behind Scheffler in second.

This isn’t just a recent development either.

I spent Saturday and Sunday last June following Clark at the U.S. Open. Throughout the weekend, he was battling Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler, two fan favorites, atop the leaderboard. Clark easily outplayed them both to capture his first major championship and showed some real stones down the stretch to do so.

But it was the way that he carried himself that caught my eye. He appeared to have this serene sense of calm mixed with supreme confidence.

That confidence exuded itself as he later exclaimed his belief that he is in fact better than McIlroy .

Of course, most people will dismiss that notion. But in order to be the best, you need to believe you are the best. No fear. No mercy. Take no prisoners and win at all cost.

Those were all mental traits that I picked up from him at Los Angeles Country Club that weekend. If that mentality sounds familiar, that’s because it embodies the late, great Kobe Bryant and was coined the ‘Mamba Mentality.’

Obviously, Clark has a long way to go winning more majors to earn that level of distinction from golf fans. But this new Wyndham Clark we have seen the last 14 months exemplifies the same cerebral approach.

Don’t believe me, just look at the results. The proof, as I say, is in the pudding.

2024 RBC Heritage live stream, watch online, TV schedule, channel, tee times, radio, golf coverage

There is no rest for the weary with a signature event on tap this week on the pga tour.

rbc-heritage-signage-2023-g.jpg

Players make the short trip from Augusta, Georgia, to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, for this week's 2024 RBC Heritage. In total, 69 golfers will tee it up on Harbour Town Golf Links across the first two days as yet another signature event on the PGA Tour's playing calendar gets underway.

Unlike the Genesis Invitational or Arnold Palmer Invitational, the RBC Heritage will not feature a 36-hole cut, meaning the entirety of the field will be around for the weekend. That is music to the ears to those who missed out on the weekend action at the Masters, including the likes of Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Wyndham Clark and Brian Harman.

Spieth, the 2022 champion, looks to kickstart his season after a disappointing showing at Augusta National. He is no stranger to bouncing back at the RBC Heritage; he followed a missed cut at the year's first major championship with a win a week later in Hilton Head.

If Spieth is to return to the winner's circle, he will have to go through Scottie Scheffler. The world No. 1 remains in the field for now and aims to collect his fourth trophy in his last five tournaments. Fresh off slipping on his second green jacket, Scheffler has widened the gap between him and the rest of the world and shows no signs of slowing down.

Tommy Fleetwood, Collin Morikawa Xander Schauffele, Ludvig Åberg, Will Zalatoris and Max Homa were among those to perform well at the Masters, and they hope that translates to more of the same. Rory McIlroy, Patrick Cantlay and defending champion Matt Fitzpatrick will look for some form. In total, 26 of the top 30 players in the Official World Golf Rankings are set to play.
