AER Travel Pack 2 Review: The Most Comfortable 40L Backpack Ever?

I’ve tested quite a few backpacks, and out of all the travel backpacks I have tested this year (and there have been many), few packs have got me as stoked as the new  Aer Travel Pack 2 .

When you review dozens of pieces of gear a year, it is easy to get bored with uninspiring product. What gets my gear wheels turning is innovation, creativity, and backpacker practicality— which is exactly what I found when I started looking deeper at Aer backpacks.

I actually had never heard of the San Fransisco based Aer company until quite recently, so when the opportunity arose to give the Travel Pack 2 a test run, of course, I jumped on it.

The whole  one-bag travel  movement is a full-swing at the moment and plenty of companies are trying to pump-out sexy carry-on travel bags to entice travelers and digital nomads to jump on board. Many companies are also failing and few are doing it right.

I’ll be honest with you from the get-go as I know your time is as valuable as mine: the Travel Pack 2 is one of the most impressive carry-on travel backpacks I have tested; this is one Aer bag that  needs  to be on your radar friends.

Below, I breakdown every inch of the Aer Travel Pack 2, covering important details like unique organizational features, weight, packability, toughness, best uses, fit/sizing, and everything else under the sun.

Ready to know more?  Excellent (in sinister Mr. Burns voice). Simpsons references aside, let’s now take a closer look at what makes this Aer backpack badass and get on with this AER Travel Pack 2 review…

PSSSTTT! – In 2023 the ever innovative people at AER released the Travel Pack 3. It’s fundamentally similar to the Travel Pack 2 but includes some kick ass enhancements.  Check out the AER Travel Pack 3 Review here instead.

Aer Travel Pack 2 Review: Key Features and Performance Breakdown

Aer travel pack 2 vs the competition.

aer travel pack 2 backpack

A few members of The Broke Backpacker staff including myself have been using the AER Travel Pack 2 as our everyday bag over the last year. In fact, AER packs are a real hit among the team.

Being the location independent people that we are, we can work from anywhere; so for me personally I spend a lot of time moving around the city (in normal years) in search of my next favorite cafe.

I don’t live in the city center, so I usually bring what I need with me for the entire day, including my camera equipment and gear for the climbing gym… that’s where the AER pack comes into it’s own!

Since I lived in Portland, Oregon recently and now on Madeira Island in Portugal, one never knows what the weather will do. I am always prepared for bad weather when I go out. On any given day I usually pack the following items:

  • 13-inch MacBook in a soft case.
  • Full-size notebook/planner
  • Phone and computer chargers
  • Fuji Film X-T3 camera + camera bag
  • Rock climbing shoes
  • Chalk bag (inside a plastic bag to avoid a mess)
  • Waterbottle
  • Rain jacket
  • Down jacket
  • Fleece layer
  • Travel towel (for the gym)
  • Bar of soap (I am a sweaty mess)
  • Book (in case I feel like slacking off instead of writing about backpacks)
  • Coffee thermos

If I were to go on a work trip for a few days, I would pack all of these things minus the climbing gear and plus a few extra clothes (at least an extra pair of clean underwear, right?). I might also combine the bag with a small travel purse on transit days to keep all my documents and passport close at hand.

So, how does the AER Travel Pack 2 perform as a backpack for a busy 21st-century human? Let’s find out…

aer backpack review

Interior Organization

Without practical internal features, a backpack is nothing. NOTHING I SAY! We have all heard our teachers in elementary school say “It doesn’t matter what you look like on the outside. It is what’s on the inside that counts.” When it comes to thinking about backpacks, the same philosophy applies…kids. The Travel Pack 2 does not leave much to be desired on the inside.

For a more detailed visual breakdown of the interior, check out our friend Aaron at Nomad Nation’s epic video review of the AER Travel Pack 2…

In fact, the Travel Pack 2 has so much going on internally that I have broken down this review into several sections dedicated to each of the three main compartments…

Laptop Compartment

The compartment on the AER bag is located just behind the back panel is the laptop compartment. As mentioned, I typically travel with my 13″ Macbook Pro. Storing larger laptops up to 15.6″ is no problem, (and if your laptop happens to be slightly bigger, it could probably fit as well).

Since I am constantly moving around, I find it really handy to have a compartment dedicated to laptop storage. Quick access is key. I don’t want to have to open up the backpack where all of my other stuff is just to get to my laptop.

aer backpack review

There are no straps or clips to secure the laptop from moving around in the Travel Pack 2. That said I never had an issue with my laptop shifting or bouncing about as the dedicated laptop pocket within the compartment keeps it in place just fine without straps.

If you have stuff packed into the other compartments as well, the bulge coming from the “main” pack area helps to hold everything in place.

Laptop Compartment Score: 4/5 stars

The Main Compartment

For all of your clothing/travel gear storage needs, it’s all about the main compartment. Opening like a clamshell, once fully unzipped, the AER backpack is able to lie completely flat, making packing super easy.

The clamshell opening also makes accessing your stuff super easy once you reach your destination.

aer backpack review

There are two zippered storage zones within the main compartment. The larger one is made from breathable mesh and is a good place to put chargers, non-bulky toiletries, a book, or even a small tablet.

The smaller zippered pocket is about half the size of the one above it. I found it to be slightly too small to pack any clothing into it, though you can fit a few pairs of socks or underwear if need be.

aer backpack review

It’s important to note that if you overpack the main compartment, you will find it difficult to pack anything bulky into the other two compartments.

Something that I have never seen on a travel backpack of this size before is the shoe compartment. The shoe storage zone is actually accessed from the outside of the pack, but it feeds into the main pack compartment. I love the idea, however, if you put anything other than flip flops inside the shoe compartment (like normal shoes), the shoe storage pouch takes up a lot of room inside the main compartment.

aer travel pack review

I tend to use the shoe storage pocket for putting soft things like a down jacket for quick access. Don’t expect to use the shoe pocket for hiking boots or any large footwear.

Main Compartment Score: 4/5

Front Storage Compartment

If you intend on working out of your Aer backpack, this is the zone to pay attention to. This compartment is loaded with almost too many pockets and places to put little bits and pieces. Seriously, if you don’t pay attention, you are liable to misplace something in here as I have already done.

There are six individual storage pockets, pen pockets, and one zippered pocket towards the top. One of the pockets is deep enough to fit file folders or even your laptop if you prefer for it to be in here. Chargers, notebooks, a tablet, planners, books, file folders (also could be put into the laptop compartment), a framed portrait of your grandma— all of that stuff can easily fit into this zone with more than enough space to spare.

aer backpack review

The key to getting the most out of the Travel Pack 2 is to not overpack any one section. As mentioned,  I found that when I loaded most of my gear into the main compartment it bulked out the entire pack to the point where I found it difficult to pack any large items into the other compartments (with the exception of my laptop).

For people with obsessive organizational issues like me, the Travel Pack 2 legitimately ticks each and every box— which is something I can rarely say about any backpack.

Granted, typically my go-to backpack for long term travel is a 70-liter trekking backpack because I also work as a trekking guide in Pakistan and always have half of the damn gear shop worth of stuff with me.

aer travel pack review

If you tend to travel light or are just looking for an awesome weekend travel bag for work or play, the Travel Pack 2 is probably the best backpack on the market right now to serve that purpose. In another life, if I didn’t normally travel with so much stuff for work, I could see myself cruising around South East Asia with this backpack.

Front Compartment Score: 5/5 stars

The Exterior

The outside of the Travel Pack 2 doesn’t have quite as much going on as the interior, but I think that’s a good thing. One backpack I reviewed recently had an insane amount of pockets on the outside of the backpack, and I wasn’t the biggest fan.

Of course, it is nice to be able to get to stuff quickly and easily. Having a ton of pockets on the outside allows one to do just that. However, if we are talking about a travel backpack then the security factor has to be a huge consideration before buying or using the bag. It doesn’t take a genius to guess what I’m about to say next. If you have a ton of stuff stashed in various pockets on the outside of the backpack, you suddenly become a target for predatory thieves and pickpockets.

Bearing all of that in mind, I appreciate the very strategic location of the exterior pockets found on the Travel pack 2. There are three individual storage pockets integrated into the exterior. The shoe compartment as previously mentioned, a large square pocket just above that, and a quick access smaller pocket found near the carry handle.

aer travel pack review

The smaller pocket is perfect for keeping your phone, wallet, passport, etc safe. With the backpack on your body, it would be difficult for someone to get to anything in there without you feeling it. Still, I would be

careful about keeping anything of significant value in the exterior pockets if you find yourself traveling in especially crowded areas like a rush-hour train, a shoulder to shoulder market bazaar or a massive sporting event.

aer travel pack review

Aer did not forget about including a water bottle pocket either which I greatly appreciate. All too often these fancy carry-on backpacks omit the water bottle pocket for some reason. Don’t they know we all need to drink on the go? I will say that the water bottle pocket looks like it was designed to fit small plastic bottles and not full-sized water bottles, which is a little disappointing.

A Nalgene will not fit into the water bottle pocket, nor will my favorite travel tool of all time, the Grayl GEOPRESS .

Exterior Score: 4/5 stars

Sizing and Fit

Depending on what type of loads you think you will be carrying, the Travel pack 2 can be easily adjusted and customized to suit your needs. I’d say if you plan on carrying more than 10 kgs on a trip, pay the extra money and buy the removable hip belt (sold separately). Having a hip belt will give you extra support and balance. It will also relieve your shoulders of the entire weight of the backpack.

The Travel Pack 2 is a unisex backpack and comfortably fits people of average height up to 6’6 (just a guess). Well-padded shoulder straps ensure that your carrying experience will be comfortable. The shoulder straps have actually been redesigned with more padding than the previous model had. Unless you are carrying bricks and barbells, the shoulder straps don’t dig into your body at all.

Likewise, the breathable mesh back panel is beefed up with padding in all the right places. I found myself always using the adjustable sternum straps as well to help keep the backpack from shifting around on my shoulders whilst walking about the city.

The good fit is aided by the internal frame sheet, which provides structure, support, and helps the Aer backpack maintain its shape long-term. The comfort levels are one of the reasons our team loves these AER backpacks.

aer travel pack review

I do find the sternum strap adjustment design to be a bit poor. It takes a bit of force to slide the strap up or down the nylon “track”. The benefit I see is the sternum strap will never slide out of position on its own, so maybe it’s a good thing to have it be a bit stiff to adjust.

Sizing and Fit Score: 5/5 stars

Carry Options

Don’t want to carry this Aer backpack like a backpack aye? Scoff.

Well, you have some options. One of the innovations Aer unleashed for the Travel pack 2 is the “pass-through” feature.

This allows the Travel pack 2 to essentially be fixed to a wheeled suitcase , perpendicular to the handle.

I was not able to test this feature because I do not own any wheeled luggage.

No judgment if you travel with a wheeled suitcase of course (ok, maybe a little bit)! I get it, they are convenient and they roll. Point being, there is the option to utilize the pass-through if need be.

There are two fixed carry handles. The main super padded handle is located just above the small quick-access pocket.

aer travel pack review

I have actually destroyed these sorts of handles on other backpacks over time; the result of having a super heavy backpack and pulling on the handle too aggressively or quickly.

The Travel pack 2 handle though is burly and I can say with a great deal of confidence that you’d be hard-pressed to break it, even if your pack weighed 60 pounds (which is highly unlikely anyway).

The smaller, less padded side handle found near the water bottle pocket on the left side of the pack allows for a briefcase-like carry if you’re into that.

aer travel pack review

Carry Score: 5/5 stars

Weight and Capacity

Quick Answer:

  • Weight : 3.7 lbs
  • Capacity : 33 liters

This Aer backpack isn’t the lightest option out there, but fully-featured backpacks are never going to be ultralight. I have a 60-liter backpack that weighs less. It’s worth noting that because the Travel Pack 2 is 33 liters, starting with a base weight of 3.7 lbs. isn’t so bad and won’t really be noticed.

The weight of the backpack is determined in part by the materials used. Since this isn’t a hiking backpack I’d take a heavier backpack base weight that can handle the certain abuse I will put it through over a lightweight backpack that I will pulverize into shreds in a year or two.

For a 33 liter backpack, one can really fit a TON of stuff inside. With a little bit of strategic packing, you can cram everything needed for a long-term trip if you have a somewhat minimalist mindset .

Toughness and Durability

As long as you don’t throw the Travel Pack 2 into a meat grinder or off of a thousand-foot cliff, it should last for 10-15 years at least. The 1680D Cordura ballistic nylon exterior (not waterproof) feels like it can take a beating without showing any signs of wear.

A few weeks is probably not a good gauge of long-term toughness, but after my short experience working and traveling with the backpack last month I am confident that the Travel pack 2 is a winner for the long haul. To be honest, I am yet to fully see just how durable this backpack is, though I will update this review in a year after it has seen several seasons of heavy use (and abuse).

aer backpack review

Aer did not skimp on the YKK zippers or buckles either. Usually, the first thing that goes on my other backpacks are the plastic buckles. I have a special talent for breaking them I am learning.

Plastic buckles can be damaged easier than you may think. If you accidentally slam one in a car door or if you drop a fully packed bag on a hard surface or floor, then, of course, the buckle can easily crack/break.

With a little care and common sense, it is pretty easy to avoid damaging the buckles and other parts of the backpack (I am also learning).

Toughness Score: 4/5 stars

As previously mentioned, the Travel Pack 2 is well equipped to keep your possessions safe. The limited (and strategic) amount of pockets found on the exterior of the pack make it so that most if not all of your important stuff can stay inside the pack. Sorry, sketchy thief dudes .

The zippers on all of the 3 main compartments can be locked for additional security. It’s probably overkill and slightly paranoid to lock all three compartments, but locking the one that has your laptop or other expensive electronics or the like isn’t a bad idea when traveling in crowded areas.

Realistically though, it would be pretty much impossible for anyone to straight-up steal your laptop out of your backpack whilst you are wearing it. They would have to be some pretty clever criminals to pull that off.

aer travel pack review

The laptop compartment rests directly against your back, so unless you are paralyzed/have no sensation of feeling in your back, ain’t nobody stealing your laptop.

For further security protection, the side compression straps and buckles add another layer of thief deterrent.

Personally, I never lock my backpack. My strategy is just to pay attention to my surroundings, keep alert, and crucially double-check that all of the backpack’s enclosures are 100% zipped shut. There are a lot of zippers and pockets to keep track of, but before setting off out into the world, take the time to double-check that all of the openings are properly secured and you should be fine.

Security Score: 5/5 stars

Aer Bag Aesthetics

This shouldn’t come as a surprise as this Aer backpack was designed in San Fransico: the Travel Pack 2 is sexy, sleek, and won’t make you look like a dirtbag hiker the way all of my other trail-dusted backpacks do if you’re concerned about those things. (I am not.)

Personally, the way a backpack looks is probably the least of my concerns. That said, aesthetics are important of course. Aesthetics with regard to the Travel Pack 2 are directly related to the design and features of the backpack. When packed full, the Travel Pack 2 does have a somewhat boxy, square shape.

My experience with the bag showed me that even when not packed totally full, the shape is still quite bulked out. I had several people ask me what all I was carrying in there when really I only had a few things with me.

Overall though, I dig the look of the Travel Pack 2 because it gives the perception of a simple, minimalist outer design, when—upon closer inspection— it’s clear that attention to visual detail was something Aer was clearly concerned with.

Aesthetics Score: 5/5 stars

What I Liked About the Aer Travel Pack 2

  • Excellent organizational features.
  • Well built and durable.
  • The laptop compartment is a stand-alone compartment.
  • The quick access outer pocket for storing passport, phone, power bank, etc.
  • All of the zippered pockets.
  • The idea of the shoe pocket.
  • Lots of potential for customization.
  • I prefer having 3 main compartments instead of just having one main pack belly.

What I Didn’t Like About the Aer Travel Pack 2

  • The shoe pocket feeds into the main pack area, taking up a lot of space.
  • No rain cover .
  • It doesn’t come with a hip belt.
  • The water bottle pocket is too small for many bottle shapes.
  • No straps for securing clothing within the main pack compartment.

In the land of carry-on travel backpacks, there are a few bags out there that can hold their own against the Travel Pack 2. The closest competitor is the 40-liter

The Nomatic Travel Bag is loaded with equally cool organizational features and storage options and goes for around $40 more than the Travel pack 2 (Nomatic Travel Bag costs $279.99). The key difference is that the Nomatic backpack is larger by 7 liters. If you are looking for a backpack that allows for more carrying capacity, the Nomatic Travel Bag could be for you.

The Ultimate Aer Backpack: Our Verdict on the Travel Pack 2

I don’t get to say this often so I am going to relish this moment: the Aer Travel Backpack 2 is one of the best backpacks in its class that you will find anywhere.

From its sleek exterior to the impressively organized interior sections, this Aer backpack has got everything one needs for general everyday use, weekend adventures, and minimalist international travel.

After testing the Travel Pack 2 for the better part of a year, there are a few features that stood out to me as being particularly awesome.

The three individual main compartments offer truly excellent organization options if you’re traveling with different kinds of stuff, IE a laptop, clothing, electronics, work supplies, notebooks, chargers, etc. Everything has its place, and I love that. Gone are the days of having to fit everything into one singular compartment.

Sure I wish the Travel Pack 2 had a larger water bottle pocket and the shoe compartment could use a redesign, but apart from that, the Travel Pack 2 remains one of the best travel-specific backpacks I have ever tested.

If you are looking for a travel backpack in the 30-40 liter range to serve your adventure and work needs, look no further friends. Keen to join the One Bag Travel movement? The Aer Travel Pack 2 is an excellent way to break in, period.

Well there you have it, hopefully, we’ve covered all your questions on this AER backpack review.

I bought the tomtoc Travel Backpack 40l about a month ago and have taken it on three three-day work trips as my only bag. It carried my MacBook 16, an iPad, cable bag, all my clothes, toiletries, and even my pour over coffee setup which includes a collapsible electric kettle. It’s a beast. 80 USD and I got it in a day. It definitely should be on your list of competitors.

Aer Travel Pack 3

Aer Travel Pack 3 Review

As 2022 wound down, for many of us, opportunities to travel arose with much greater frequency than they had over the past couple of years. For a great many of us that meant we needed new travel bags to schlep our stuff in style as we resumed our domestic and international wanderlust. Looking for something new to try this past year, Aer had notified us about their upcoming updates to the Travel Collection and it was the perfect opportunity to both resume travel and try out a new bag. As a softgoods company, Aer takes an iterative approach to their designs. Rooted typically in real-world user feedback, they strive to refine their silhouettes with each generation, without throwing out what’s worked in the past. That’s an aspect of Aer that I have always appreciated because it means they listen to their customers and are always striving to evolve their products in collaboration with their users.

The  Aer Travel Pack 3  (TP3 from here on) is the latest revision in this line and has seen a number of updates over the previous generation which we will get into later in this review, but the gist of it comes down to a more adjustable harness, a more flexible main compartment and of course, magnets. I’ve had the opportunity now to travel multiple times in the past year (primarily in road trip format) and over the past several months I’ve been utilizing the TP3 as my clothing and tech carry on these trips. Professionally speaking, I’m a designer; personally speaking, I’m a new dad, so my experience with the TP3 is informed by these realities. So without further delay, let’s dig in and take a look at what it’s been like to live with.

Who It Suits

Tech-focused travelers looking to live the one-bag life are going to be the primary audience. It would also suit anyone who needs sufficient space and organization for a lot of gear. Photographers would likely be able to configure this into a viable camera bag.

Who It Doesn’t

Anyone bothered by lots of built-in organization will likely be frustrated by the layout. If you want colors other than dark neutrals you are out of luck, unfortunately. If “sleek” and “tech” are not aesthetic terms you are drawn to, I would recommend looking elsewhere.

Aer Travel Pack 3

Aer’s design language is decidedly in the tech space, which is an aspect they’ve never really wavered from. Their typically clean lines and choice of materials lean heavily into that aesthetic, which is going to be a very personal decision as to whether or not that works for you and your tastes. For me, I tend to lean towards bags that follow more of a “heritage” look and feel so this isn’t my immediate cup of tea. Despite that, I can appreciate the look for what it is and I don’t find it garish or overly complicated. Exterior branding is fairly minimal which always gets bonus points in my book but gosh Aer bags just have an abundance of zippers and very jangly pulls on them, which I find to be a significantly distracting aspect. Fortunately, if it bothers you as it does me, this is super easy to remedy by either removing the tabs and pulls altogether and installing something custom or just making simpler paracord pulls in place of the Aer branded ones.

Aer Travel Pack 3

The TP3 is positively loaded with pockets throughout every compartment, some of which are very discreet and almost hidden which affords you tons of opportunity to stash items throughout the entire bag. In fact, when I first received the bag I swear I found a new hidden pocket every time I opened it! Fortunately, though, this multitude of pockets doesn’t wind up looking like a jumbled, confusing mess as they’re all pretty cleverly layered throughout the interior.

Aer Travel Pack 3

Aesthetically you have three different material choices to work with. One is a robust  1680D Ballistic Nylon  available in three distinct-yet-neutral colors which feature a neutral grey interior, the second is a  700D Cordura  and the third is a much more tech-forward  VX42 X-Pac  which features a bright orange liner. Each look is distinct without changing the lines or design of the pack in any significant manner.

Aer Travel Pack 3

Construction

Aer designs their bags from their studio in San Francisco but has them manufactured in China, and though people are quick to criticize products made outside of the United States, I’ve experienced several bags from Aer over the past few years and they’ve all been very well finished. The TP3 has not been an exception to the rule. As I mentioned I’ve been using this bag for several months now for travel applications, usually being tossed in and dragged out of the various compartments of my truck on road trips with no sign of real material degradation. The extent of “wear” that I’ve observed thus far has been in the manner of a loose thread here and there.

This is a great opportunity to bring up the fact that Aer feels very confident in their products and offers you a lifetime warranty at no extra cost. If your bag were to develop a fault, simply reach out to them and they will repair or replace the bag. While I haven’t had to utilize their warranty service myself, I appreciate knowing that it’s available to me.

Aer Travel Pack 3

Materials & Hardware

My sample is finished in black VX42 from Dimension Polyant with a vibrant orange ripstop nylon liner and YKK AquaGuard zippers throughout. The VX material saves a small amount of weight over the Ballistic Nylon variant at 3.9 lbs over 4.12 lbs and is only slightly heavier than the 700D Cordura option (3.89 lbs). All of the touchpoints feel like they’re of a high quality, for example, all plastic hardware is from Duraflex which is a reliable manufacturer that can be depended upon. I’m also particularly fond of the top and side handles which feel so plush and easy to grab onto (a must on a travel bag).

If you choose the Ballistic Nylon or 700D Cordura version you’re still getting all the same hardware and quality, just with a different material finish.

Aer Travel Pack 3

The first time you take the TP3 out of its packaging you’ll quickly come to realize that it is stacked with features for streamlined travel. For instance, I love that it lays flat and zips all the way open with its clamshell design to make packing the bag very comfortable and easy. The updated harness allows for better adjustability on a greater range of body types thanks to the reintroduction of the load lifters. I appreciate all of the options for carrying my essentials securely along with my clothing. The suspended laptop sleeve is very accessible and there’s still a lot of extra space for other items in that area of the bag should you need to carry a second laptop or other similarly sized items.

Aer Travel Pack 3

The external compression straps have been reconfigured over the previous generation to now not inhibit access to the main compartment at all, and they’ve shifted to magnetic buckles for these straps. This was a huge quality-of-life update which I am certain was based on customer feedback. I love that there is a semi-secret space to stash a small sling or day bag in the main interior so you can lighten up once you get to your destination. I often would toss the Day Sling 3 into this space when packing and it was really handy to have available once arriving at my destination when I most certainly didn’t still need a 35L pack. Speaking of hidden spaces, you’ll also find buried within a stash spot for an Apple AirTag (or similar tracking device) which is a welcome addition for peace of mind when you’re away from your bag.

Aer Travel Pack 3

Performance

Space & Access

The redesigned main compartment of the TP3 sees the removal of the previous shoe compartment of the last generation but this omission really optimizes carry capacity and access for packing. Now for context, I’m 6’2″ and broad-shouldered, so you can imagine my clothing is not at all small, yet despite this I was able to pack very comfortably into the space provided. Generally speaking, 35L packs can be a bit tight (for me) but my go-to Peak Design packing cubes fit easily in the main cavity while still leaving me full access to the rear laptop compartment and the front tech panel for things like my laptop, chargers, a plethora of cables and perhaps a book or two.

Aer Travel Pack 3

I do have to comment on the zippers once again though as there is an issue related to access due to them. The front and main compartment zipper paths are very close together and since each one has dual zippers (YKK #10 on the main compartment and #8 on the front), if they happen to be zipped closed on the same side, it becomes a jumbled nest of zipper pulls and I found myself frequently opening the wrong compartment when I wasn’t looking closely. This can be mitigated by intentionally making sure you close each compartment on opposing sides, but I found this small bit of extra cognitive load to use a bag to be slightly frustrating.

Aer Travel Pack 3

Anyone who knows me knows how relentlessly picky I am about bag fit and comfort, which stems from harnesses and back panels that often don’t work well for my tall and broad frame. I am completely pleased to report that the TP3 harness is perfectly comfortable even when fully loaded. The straps are wide enough and have sufficient padding to help distribute the load evenly on your shoulders. The inclusion of the load lifters also is a very welcome feature for me as it lets me dial in the fit of the bag exactly where I want it (I prefer the top of the pack to not pull away from my back). The back panel is comfortably padded, and though I don’t typically love mesh-style panels, this one is just fine.

Aer Travel Pack 3

A small but welcome comfort feature I’d also like to mention is the top and side grab handles. I found them to be pleasantly padded and perfectly placed on either side so that when I swing the bag off my shoulder, the side handle is exactly where my hand naturally would be in that motion and removing the pack becomes a very smooth and seamless motion. Lastly, and while I don’t have it with my pack, Aer does offer an optional padded hip belt that will attach to the bag if you want some additional weight-bearing support.

Aer Travel Pack 3

Weatherability

Now considering I spend the majority of my time in the state of California, it’s a known fact that I am unlikely to experience weather any more adverse than oppressive sunshine or persistent wildfires, so I sadly did not have any rainy days during my months of testing. However, we can extrapolate what we know about these materials and paint a very realistic expectation of how this bag will behave in wet conditions. VX42 is a highly weather-resistant material and based on my experience with it in other packs it will hold up remarkably well in the rain. To top it off, we have some very stout YKK AquaGuard zippers to seal off any openings so I feel very confident in saying that your contents are going to be just fine within the TP3 in most environments. However, if you need a bit more, Aer does offer an optional rainfly which can be deployed to fully cover the pack from the elements.

Aer Travel Pack 3

  • • Lots of clever pockets and hidden features
  • • Comfortable harness with load lifters for fine-tuning adjustments
  • • Improved compression that no longer obstructs front compartment
  • • Improved capacity in main compartment
  • • Nice grab handles throughout the pack

Not So Good

  • • Too bulky and complicated to be considered a daily carry
  • • Too many jangly zippers
  • • Some pockets become difficult to access when the bag is full

Aer Travel Pack 3

Aer is a brand I associate with slick designs and killer value and the Travel Pack 3 does not deviate from this formula. It is heavily feature-laden yet still sleek in its exterior appearance, available in three distinct material choices, comfortable, spacious, with a lifetime warranty, and all for under $300. We are in an era of carry where bags frequently break past that $300 barrier (in some cases, well past) so I find it refreshing that Aer is able to provide so much functionality in their bags and yet keep them at attainable price points. I really enjoyed my time with the Aer Travel Pack 3 and found it to be a worthwhile companion on the road despite some small complaints (no bag is perfect, after all). I think if the aesthetic suits your tastes, this is a great option in the 30L+ travel bag space.

What We Like: Shoe compartment, slim design.

What We Don’t: Small size, hipbelt sold separately.

A great addition to the Travel Backpack market, the AER Travel Pack 2 is a highly functional, though slightly smaller, travel pack for modern nomads. The various storage compartments for electronics, shoes, and other accessories are all well plotted out in the pack, and nothing seems out of place. Again, it is slightly smaller than the other packs on the list at 33l, but if you are highly organized this shouldn’t be a problem.

AER is another example of crowdfunding generated projects that have grown into innovative young companies. Beginning in 2014 with a bag that combined a gym bag and an office bag, they have expanded their collection to include one bag travel packs. Aiming to create simple, durable, and utilitarian packs, they have since begun selling everything from slings to totes and briefcases. Their addition to the travel backpack market with the Travel Pack 2 is a well organized and very attractive pack.

While the AER Travel Pack 2 only sits at a smaller 33l, it has some very great storage pockets that will keep you well organized as you fly through airports and trot the globe at unprecedented speeds. The main pocket opens flat to give great access to all of your cargo. Within this main compartment are two smaller zippered pockets for improved organization.

Best Travel Backpacks: AER Travel Pack 2 - Gear Hacker

On the bottom of the pack is a shoe compartment that will fit up to a men’s size 13 shoe or your dirty laundry from a week of travels. Along the top of the pack is a quick access pocket for items such as your passport or wallet. On the front of the pack is a thin slash pocket for documents or books, and along the side is a water bottle pocket that won’t fit a Nalgene but also zips away when not in use.

Best Travel Backpacks: AER Travel Pack 2 - Gear Hacker

On the top of the pack there is a zipper that opens halfway down and allows for access to small valuables. There are organization pockets within this pocket for a camera, pens, magazines, headphones, you name it! The organizational opportunities of the travel packs are always something that surprise me because I like to have everything in “its spot,” and the Travel Pack 2 seems to have a place for everything.

Best Travel Backpacks: AER Travel Pack 2 - Gear Hacker

On the back of the pack, there is a zippered pocket with room for a 15” laptop. The pocket has weather-resistant YKK zippers to help you feel a bit more comfortable putting your life’s work in your backpack, because who really understands the cloud?

Best Travel Backpacks: AER Travel Pack 2 - Gear Hacker

The backpanel of the Travel Pack 2 has stretch mesh for a layer of comfort. It has a vertical vent system to help with airflow. The shoulder straps are fairly thin and remind me more of an old school bag than of something you would want to wear for a long day of exploring a new city.

There are some loops that will allow for a hipbelt to be attached, but the hipbelt itself is sold separately, which is a negative for me.

Best Travel Backpacks: AER Travel Pack 2 - Gear Hacker

I would rather have the option of taking off the hipbelt to keep the pack looking more professional. As a friend once told me, “It’s better to look at it than to look for it.” There is a sternum strap on the shoulder straps, which helps to manage some of the load, but without the hipbelt, all of the weight will be on your shoulders and that can become tiring at the end of the day.

Along the valuables pocket and the main compartment are lockable YKK zippers. The laptop pocket does not have lockable pockets, but it does have toggles that could have a lock looped through them. It is not as secure as you would expect for a pocket that holds the most expensive item in the pack. The compression straps that run along the side of the pack when buckled cover the zippers, which, like in the Osprey Farpoint 40 , adds an additional level of security. These small features help with your sense of well being while traveling busy city streets.

Best Travel Backpacks: AER Travel Pack 2 - Gear Hacker

The pack itself is made with a 1680D Cordura ballistic nylon exterior, which is about as tough as it comes. The YKK zippers are burley, and they use Duraflex plastic hardware, which are also tough and reliable. The overall weight of the pack is a comfortable 3.7lbs, which is great for a small pack that is built like a tank.

The Bottom L ine

AER has developed a very modern and well-organized carry on travel bag. It is not as large as most packs and is missing an included hipbelt (though that can be purchased separately), but the organizational options are great and have room for expansion. With the size of the pack, you will never have to worry about not being able to use it as a carry on, which is always reassuring.

At a cost of $230, it is a bit more expensive than I would have liked for a pack of its size and functionality. The materials it uses are high quality, and the durability will likely be lifelong. A small investment in a great pack now is never a bad decision, especially if you are a digital nomad that has a home base but who travels on short and sweet business trips often. If that’s you, I think the AER Travel Pack 2 would be an excellent option for your lifestyle.

Review: Aer’s Travel Pack 3 Is a Globetrotter’s Backpack Done Right

' width=

By: Tim Huber Published: May 25, 2022

Roughly a decade ago, Allen Choi found himself needing a do-it-all daily use bag that could go straight from home to the office to the gym. Unsatisfied with the available bags on the market, Choi opted to design his own game-changing backpack that was launched through a Kickstarter campaign in 2014 — a project that would ultimately lead to the inception of the Aer brand. Since that time, Aer has steadily introduced an ever-growing and ever-evolving range of ultra-capable bags that are engineered from the ground up for specific uses.

One such item is the San Francisco label’s latest Travel Pack. Keeping in line with the company’s MO, this third-generation bag is highly calculated, crafted from a spare-no-expense array of materials, and loaded with features that were clearly born out of years of real-world experience and daily-field testing — both at home and abroad. And while there’s absolutely no denying the high-end nature or premium quality of the bag, it can still be difficult to judge whether or not the backpack’s features and construction justify its $249 MSRP. So, with this in mind, we’ve opted to explore the latest version of this purpose-built travel pack firsthand, putting its features and build quality to the test in this hands-on review of the Aer Travel Pack 3.

VIDEO REVIEW: AER TRAVEL PACK 3

To get a better idea of what kind of utility this bag offers, have a look at our Aer Travel Pack 3 video review .

Aer Travel Pack History

Three Generations Of Perfecting Travel Packs

Meticulously developed to be something of the ultimate travel bag, the original first-generation Aer Travel Pack first debuted in 2017. Also launched via a wildly successful crowdfunding campaign, this initial model would eventually be phased out in favor of the even more capable Travel Pack 2 in late 2018. Fast forward to 2022, and after hundreds — if not thousands — of feedback notes from the public, and tens of thousands of miles of international globetrotting, Aer has finally debuted the highly-anticipated successor to its second-gen model with the heavily-revised Travel Pack 3.

First Impressions

Surface-Level Observations

Right out of the box, Aer’s third-generation Travel Pack boasts a premium quality that the user can easily feel, looking even more attractive and well-built in person with its subtle waterproof zippers , ample reinforcements, blacked-out hardware, and ballistic-grade weaved construction. Aesthetically, the backpack sports an incredibly minimalistic design that’s made all the more impressive by how thoroughly utilitarian it manages to be.

And, while it’s abundantly clear that every element of this bag has been thoroughly considered and streamlined, with an inherent purpose behind each feature, its bevy of zipper tracks can be a little confusing at first — though this issue quickly goes away after becoming better acquainted with the bag over the first day or two of use/ownership.

Quality Constructions

Only The Best Materials

Like its predecessor, the Aer Travel Pack 3 features a shell that’s crafted from insanely-rugged 1,680-denier CORDURA . This bluesign-approved, ballistic-grade exterior has been matched by an array of equally premium components such as Duraflex hardware, Hypalon label tags, and waterproof YKK zippers equipped with Hypalon and custom Aer-branded pulls. The backpack’s main compartment has also been treated to a smooth ripstop liner while its dedicated electronics and tech compartments (i.e. the bag’s laptop sleeve and smartphone pocket) have been treated to thick padding trimmed in ultra-soft fleece linings. Sitting beneath a plush, breathable, foam-lined back panel is an internal frame sheet. This internal frame chassis system provides the bag with a semi-rigid structure, enabling it to stand up on its own when packed while also affording additional support.

aer travel canada

Third-Generation Design

Third Time's A Charm

Though the newest version of the Travel Pack looks remarkably similar to its first- and second-generation predecessors, the backpack has actually been bestowed with a slew of tweaks and updates that make for an even more capable travel bag. Hugely benefitting from ample customer feedback as well as Aer’s own field-testing, the Travel Pack 3 retains the previous gens’ Lay-flat main compartment, though loses its dedicated shoe compartment. Other revisions include an improved compression design, the addition of all-new load lifters that bolster comfort and fit, and a hidden smart tracker pocket for accommodating Apple AirTags, Tiles, or other smart tracking devices.

And, while it still measures 21.5” in length, the bag’s width has been shortened by half an inch (down to 13” from 13.5”) and its depth has increased by the same amount (going from the 8.5” to 9”). These revised dimensions also result in more volume, with the Travel Pack 3 boasting 35 liters of real estate versus the 2’s 33 liters. The gen-three is also slightly heavier, now tipping the scales at 4.2lbs — up from 3.7.

aer travel canada

External Design & Equipment

Minimalist Yet Complex

Despite its incredibly spartan exterior design, the outside of the Track Pack 3’s shell actually packs a surprising amount of attachment points and cleverly-integrated features. This includes a pair of D-rings supplemented by a series of loops on the backpack’s two shoulder straps, a luggage handle pass-through, an integrated zippered expandable water bottle sleeve, and a redesigned compression strap setup that sees the gen-two bag’s plastic buckles jettisoned in favor of FIDLOCK-style magnetic fasteners. This same magnetic coupling fastener is also used to secure the sternum strap that connects the two shoulder straps. There are also heavily-reinforced grab handles at the top of the bag and on either side, as well as an additional grab handle tucked into the back panel between its padding. Lastly, Aer also produces a removable hip belt with built-in zippered pockets — though this item is sold separately.

aer travel canada

Internal Storage & Organization

It's What's On The Inside That Counts

Aer’s Travel Pack 3 has been further streamlined for easy one-bag travel. Carry-on-friendly , this backpack features a luggage-style lay-flat main compartment that sits beneath a front secondary compartment that’s outfitted with a generous bevy of organizers, sleeves, and zippered compartments — both of which are secured via lockable waterproof zippers.

Also designed with ample versatility in mind, the third-gen Travel Pack sports a plethora of supplementary pockets and compartments such as a padded and suspended laptop sleeve that can simultaneously accommodate a smart tablet and a notebook of up to 16”, and a padded and fleece-lined easy-access smartphone pocket. Opposite the bag’s expandable water bottle pocket is yet another quick-access pocket, meant for storing passports, wallets, and other small essentials.

Final Thoughts On A Brilliant Pack

Overall, after the time we spent putting this bag through its paces, we went from liking Aer’s latest Travel Pack to loving it. While building on an already industry-leading design is admittedly a monumental task, Choi and the rest of the team over at Aer have managed to do exactly that. A wonderful blend of minimalist form meeting highly-utilitarian function, the newest iteration of this backpack boasts a myriad of incredibly intuitive features that were very clearly derived from real-world travel experience. And, while we honestly have absolutely no idea how Aer will do it, the continued evolution of this award-winning bag makes us extremely excited to eventually get our hands on the inevitable fourth generation of the Travel Pack.

Aer travel pack backpack review.

We do an in-depth and hands-on review of the Aer Travel Pack backpack.

Packing , Product Reviews

aer travel canada

We’ve been hearing a lot of good things about the new Aer Tavel Pack backpack so we wanted to do our own hands-on review of the Aer to see if it’s a good travel backpack.

UPDATE for 2023 : Aer has made some solid upgrades to their Travel Pack and replaced it with their new Travel Pack 3 — Read my Aer Travel Pack 3 Review for more details.

Aer Travel Pack: Quick Overview

The Aer is designed to be a “one bag” travel backpack — which basically means it’s meant for people who want to only travel with a single carry-on sized backpack (It’s small enough to fit the carry-on size requirements of all the budget airline). That means not having to pay checked bag fees, not worrying about lost luggage, and being able to zip through city streets with ease.

The Aer Travel Pack is 33L. It isn’t huge but it does hold a surprising amount of stuff (we’ll get to that later in the review). Basically, if you can pack light then this bag will work for you.

That said, if you’re a heavy packer then you might need a little more space (or strongly consider packing a lot less).

One thing we love about this bag is its looks. It’s sleek, streamlined, and it won’t stick out in an urban environment (we hate the look of crazy colored “hiking” bags). It does have a few straps that hang off the bag but they’re pretty minimal. And it’s actually rugged thanks to its heavy duty 1680D Cordura ballistic nylon exterior.

  • Length: 21.5″ (55 cm)
  • Width: 13.5″ (34 cm)
  • Depth: 8.5″ (22 cm)

The Aer Travel Pack costs $220 directly from the Aer Website .

Aer Travel Pack Review: Deep Dive

Alright, let’s get down & dirty with the Aer Travel Pack.

Size (How Much Stuff Can it Hold?)

Aer Travel Backpack Review - Size

The Aer is designed to fit the “one bag” travel style. It’s for people who don’t want to pay all those checked bags fees or be weighed down with a lot of stuff.

First, as you can see, this bag opens like a suitcase — which is ideal for travel.

The Aer is a 33L bag and it’s dimensions are Length: 21.5″ (55 cm), Width: 13.5″ (34 cm), Depth: 8.5″ (22 cm). It’s technically 2cm over the limit for the some of the more stingy budget European airlines… but don’t worry about that since they don’t actually measure bags that closely. Plus, the backpack doesn’t have a rigid structure so it can easily squish to fit whatever size required.

Aer Travel Pack Review - Packing Cubes

This bag can fit a good deal of stuff — especially if you pack smartly. We recommend using packing cubes as it helps you pack more and keep everything organized. Here are some more tips for packing a backpack .

That said, this is a bag designed to be carry-on compatible so you need to be smart about what you bring. It’s best if you can get by with a single pair of shoes (if you do need two pairs of shoes, the second pair should be small like the Nike’s in the photo).

If you’re traveling in the winter then you might have a little tougher of a time since you’ll have bulkier clothes but you should be alright.

Organization

The Aer has plenty of pockets and places to stash all your travel gear. We really like how there are a few well-placed exterior pockets — which is surprisingly rare in a lot of travel backpacks.

Main Compartment

Aer Travel Pack Backpack Review - Main Compartment

As you can see, the main compartment is a big open space — which offers plenty of room to cram all your stuff. On the flap, there is a small zippered pocket for odds-and-ends. There is a bit of padding that goes all along the edge of the backpack for extra protection.

Organization Pockets

aer backpack review - pockets

The front flap zips down to reveal a bunch of nice and handy pockets. There is a big zippered pouch, an area for documents, a velcro pocket, and a few other random spaces to keep your stuff organized. All these little compartments have a bit of padding sewed in — it adds a bit of bulk but not too bad.

Also, notice the water bottle pocket. It’s not huge but it will hold a skinnier bottle. This pocket does zip closed when not in use so that is a nice touch.

External Pockets

aer travel pack review - pockets

The front of the bag has two handy zippered pockets. The top can fit a small book, boarding passes, and other random things you might access while on the go. The bottom pocket is smaller and we’d use it to store your power brick or something like socks.

Aer review - top pocket

At the very top of the bag, there is another super handy pocket. This is great for phones, sunglasses, wallets and other things you need to access but it has the added benefit of keeping your stuff protected.

Laptop Compartment

aer review laptop

The Aer can fit up to a 15″ laptop. We love that is has a suspended laptop pocket — which keeps your laptop a few inches from the bottom of the bag so it doesn’t smash into the ground when you set it down. That said, you might want to still put your laptop in a protective sleeve.

The laptop pocket is pretty easy to access so you shouldn’t have any trouble getting your computer out during airport security.

Shoe Compartment

Aer backpack review - shoe compartment

At the bottom of the bag, there is a shoe compartment but the compartment/sleeve goes into the main part of the bag… so it takes up a ton of room when there are shoes in there. This seems like an odd design choice and we don’t see ourselves using it — especially on an extended trip. It could possibly fit sandals or maybe you could store some dirty clothes in there.

Comfort / Wearability

Aer Travel Pack Review - Straps

The Aer Travel Pack has a pretty good (but not amazing) suspension system so the shoulder straps/harness should keep you comfortable if you’re not wearing for long amounts of time. That said, this bag isn’t designed to hold a ton of weight so overloading this bag will result in shoulder strain/pain (another reason to pack light).

The actual straps have a decent amount of padding — it’s not the most we’ve seen but it gets the job done.

The shoulder straps do have load lifters on top of the straps so that’s a really nice feature. These allow the shoulder straps to better fit the curve of your shoulders and it keeps the backpack close to your back.

The back of the backpack does have some mesh padding and there is a vent in the middle to give a little airflow — both are nice features that add a little extra comfort. Again, it’s not a ton of padding but enough to get the job done.

You’ll notice that this bag does have a sternum strap but it does not have a hip belt. Personally, we don’t like hip belts Europe travel but some people do.

Build Quality

Aer Backpack Review - quality

The overall build quality of the Aer is super solid. The 1680D Cordura ballistic nylon material is thick and really tough. All the seams look solid and the stitching looks really good as well (the stitching is often really bad on cheap bags) The shoulder straps are reinforced. The zippers are all YKK (the gold standard of zippers) and the main zipper is super chunky (that’s a good thing). The zippers also have long pulls to make opening them up easy.

The bag also has nice compression straps to help you cinch down the bag so all your stuff doesn’t move around. All these extra straps and buckles make it a little less streamlined but it does add functionality.

Bottom line, you can throw this bag around and it will easily take the punishment.

But the super sturdiness of the bag means it’s a tad on the heavy side — it weighs in at 3.6lbs. For comparison, the Osprey Porter 46 (which is 10L bigger) is 3.4 LBS. However, the comparable Tortuga Outbreaker 35L weighs 4.7lbs.

aer pack hand straps

We love that the Aer has side and top handles. These come in super handy when you take your bag out of overhead bins, if you need to carry your bag through narrow aisles, or if you’re throwing your bag around.

This bag doesn’t claim to be water-resistant but should do a decent job during light rain. The main zipper isn’t water resistant — so that’s kind of a bummer (the two front pocket zippers are water resistant). This isn’t a deal breaker but it would have been a nice touch.

Personally, we really like the look of the Aer. It looks rugged/utilitarian while also being fairly sleek and streamlined. It’s a bit boxy but it definitely feels like it belongs in an urban setting and not out in in the wilderness. By the way, the bag comes in black or grey — both look great.

We also love how there is essentially no branding on the bag other than a tiny little tag on the side. We hate huge logos on our bags so Aer really nailed it here.

Overall Thoughts

We’re really digging the Aer Travel Pack. It’s smartly-designed, well-constructed, minimalist, and stylish bag that’s designed specifically for urban travel. It’s an excellent choice for someone who subscribes to the one-bag travel philosophy. It is a little on the heavy side but that’s because it’s made from super sturdy materials.

The Aer is one of the more expensive backpacks on the market but it’s certainly not the most expensive. It costs  $220 at the Aer Website so that might be a concern if you’re on a tight budget.

However, the gray colorway strays from the pack and is instead made with 900D Ecoya® eco-dyed polyester. We don’t have it on hand to vouch for the material in comparison, but 900D fabric is pretty up there in terms of durability, and Ecoya® is a solid eco-friendly fabric option if you like to make an effort to be sustainable whenever you can.

As expected, Aer stuck to subtle branding by using the same white-on-black logo tag we’ve seen on almost all of the bags of theirs we’ve tested . There’s also a little Aer etched into the zipper pull tabs, and it’s worth noting that those tabs didn’t clank together like they did for us on other Aer bags.

Aer Travel Sling 2 Logo

In terms of style, this bag is like if the Aer Tech Sling 2 and the Aer Day Sling 2 had a baby. It’s got the briefcase-esque look of the Tech Sling 2, but it sits more diagonally across the back and has external zipper storage similar to the Day Sling 2. We really enjoy the look of it on—it makes us feel like young and hungry business professionals.

Aer Travel Sling 2 Fit Notes

One of the biggest benefits of this sling is the multiple carrying options. You can wear it as a sling for maximum comfort over long distances, throw it over one shoulder if you’ll be taking it off a bunch (like on public transit or when going from your car to a nearby building), or grab the carry handle to move it quickly.

Wearing it as a full sling is the most secure, though we found that carrying it over one shoulder was still comfortable and gave off major “cool kid in school who only wears a single backpack strap even though it has two for a reason,” vibes. Except, because this sling is lightweight and the strap has a pretty thick and cushy mesh padding, we felt confident and cool carrying it as intended.

Aer Travel Sling 2 Pocket With Phone

The carry handle is convenient if we needed to move it over short distances, but there’s no place to secure the cross shoulder strap, so it just flaps around as you walk. This wasn’t a huge bother, though we do wish there was a better option for tucking away the super long adjustment strap.

This is one of our main gripes with this sling. We like the quick adjustability—simply pull the D-ring to loosen the strap and pull down on the extra material when you want to tighten it—but there’s a lot of strap to go around. There’s an elastic strap keeper to help manage the extra length, but we found it difficult to use on the go and often settled for moving the keeper as far down as possible to keep the leftover material out of the way.

Aer Travel Sling 2 | The length of this strap took some getting used to.

On the plus side, the buckle on the shoulder strap makes it easy to set it and forget it. If you don’t want to adjust the length of the strap every time you want to take the sling off, just clip and unclip yourself as needed.

Unlike the Aer Sling Bag 3 , the side this strap falls on is not adjustable with a clip. You can only wear it as a sling over your left shoulder or as a one-shoulder pack on your right, but because we found the swapping feature uncomfortable in the Sling Bag 3, this is more of a plus side than anything.

Aer Travel Sling 2 Zippers

All three outside zippers are YKK, and the outermost pocket features Aquaguard for added weather resistance. There are loops on either side of that front pocket as well, which act as attachment points for anything you may want to hang on the outside, like a collapsible water bottle .

However, if you prefer to keep everything inside of the pack, there’s plenty of space to organize your gear so that it’s close at hand when you need it.

Inside The Sling

Though its low-profile design doesn’t show it from the outside, this bag has oodles of storage and organization to get you through your day-to-day. When you want to get to your stuff, you can either take the pack off entirely or swing it around to your front while it’s still on to access any of the three zippered compartments.

We’ll start with the main compartment. There’s a padded laptop sleeve that fits up to a 16” laptop and a second sleeve for a tablet or notebook. A velcro strap is there to hold these things in place, but we found it sometimes got in the way when we were trying to load and unload our stuff quickly.

Aer Travel Sling 2 Packed With Gear

On the other side of this compartment is a range of pockets for organizing the rest of your gear, though we sometimes found the sizes a little too big. The large U-shaped pocket in the back holds the external quick-access pocket so that it doesn’t get in the way of the main compartment’s storage. In front of that is where the real magic happens.

Two pockets make up the width of the bag and are great for holding noise-canceling headphones, a tech pouch, or a small notebook. In front of that, there are two pen holders, a mesh pocket, and a zippered pocket to secure smaller items like eye drops and dental floss.

Unfortunately, packing smaller items into the outer pockets became difficult if the larger ones were too full. On the flip side, if the pockets weren’t full enough, smaller items would often fall out once we put the sling on because there was nothing to hold them in place.

Aer Travel Sling 2 With Bottle

We found that even when there was plenty of room left in the sling, we had a hard time packing round things like a water bottle or Tupperware container. Carrying a laptop significantly reduces the flexibility of the sling, so if it’s packed too full, it can be difficult to zip closed.

We can see this bag coming in handy for a digital nomad or someone who travels a lot for work. It easily attaches to rolling luggage and features enough organization to keep all of your gear in place while you hop from location to location. Though you can’t pack it out with all of the clothing you need for a long weekend, having a designated spot for all of your tech and small gear leaves more space in your suitcase.

Aer Travel Sling 2 With Passport

On the outside of the pack, two zippers make accessing gear easy. The smaller quick-access pocket is at the top of the bag near the handle and is great for holding things like your passport, boarding pass, or chapstick. It’s the closest zipper to you when you flip the bag around to your front, which makes it ideal for items you don’t want to be fumbling around for when you get to the front of the check-in line.

The large outer pocket fits oversized items you want to access often, like a thick wallet or keys. There’s a key clip to keep them from flying around in there, but it’s a little short to be able to use without detaching them, and we found that items we stuck in either of the two internal pockets stayed pretty secure without it.

Aer Travel Sling 2 With Keys

This front pocket is slightly larger than we ever needed, although it’s handy to have if the main compartment is packed tight. That being said, we struggled to get any of the compartments to cooperate if they were too full, so we don’t advise packing this sling out to capacity anyway.

Whether you travel for work or pleasure, the Aer Travel Sling 2 is a sleek way to get all of your gear from place to place in comfort and style. Though we wish it were a bit more versatile, and we found the low-profile fit limited its packability, it worked great as a daypack and provided more than enough internal organization to keep us efficient on the go.

This Aer backpack isn't the lightest option out there, but fully-featured backpacks are never going to be ultralight. I have a 60-liter backpack that weighs less.
