Welcome to Alaska

The heart-stopping excitement of a tidewater glacier calving into the sea... the quiet majesty of a bald eagle soaring in a cloudless sky... snow-clad mountains towering over deep blue rivers... forested landscapes and glistening fjords... a legacy of cultural traditions... accessible on adventures that invite you to experience them up close and unhurried all in one epic destination.

Denali national park, "alaska: call of the wild" ~ "grand alaska" ~ "wild alaska".

A flightseeing adventure around the southern side of Denali takes in all possible views on a flight over the vast Alaska wilderness, untouched by modern man. View incredible glaciers, peaks and valleys soaring above open alpine tundra and glacier-fed, braided rivers – with a possibility of spotting cascading icefalls and wildlife such as moose, bear, swans and the occasional wolf or coyote.

Lake Clark National Park and Preserve

"wild alaska".

Lake Clark National Park and Preserve is one of the best habitats in Alaska to see bears. The topography of the park attracts an abundance of wildlife – and when the salmon are running, the brown bears come to the shores of Crescent Lake to fish. From a vantage point on the lake, you'll have an opportunity to see them – and photograph them – up close as they fish and forage along the riverbanks.

One of my greatest pleasures is sharing the history of the great state of Alaska in folk songs and stories...

Steve Hites, "Alaska's Inside Passage"

Tracy Arm Fjord

"alaska's inside passage".

Ice calving, or the thunderous spectacle of ice breaking off from glaciers, is one of Alaska's natural wonders that is amazing to both watch and hear. Tracy Arm Fjord, approximately 50 miles southeast of Juneau, is about 30 miles long – and is home to some of Alaska's largest and most stunning glaciers. The scenery is breathtaking – waterfalls cascade, lush forests border the shores, and the ice glistens with myriad hues. Don't be surprised to find families of seals sunning themselves – and keep an eye open for orcas...

“Much better tour package than a cruise/tour I took a few years ago!!! Accommodations and excursions were excellent, food options great, and the benefits of a small group vs big cruise ship are priceless.”

“we had the best time on our adventure. everything was taken care of for us including all activities. we had a blast we had the best guide. by the time the trip was done, we felt like family.”, “aau created the most amazing trip for our family – accommodating our group of 26 our guides were friendly and highly knowledgeable. the schedule was jam packed with tours and adventures, we could have never organized such a trip. thanks again for the vacation of a lifetime”, —michael m., “we had an awesome time on our alaskan adventure excursion. traveling by large van was the way to go. we were able to see so much more of the backcountry of alaska than we would have on a cruise.”, “our first visit to alaska was a huge success. we did so much in 10 days and the memories created will last forever. the natural beauty of alaska is reason enough to visit but experiences like white-water rafting, ziplining, flightseeing, and glacier walks made this trip extra special.”, “we just finished a week-long tour through alaska with aau. it was our best vacation ever we appreciated the variety of activities and excursions that were arranged. taken together, they gave us an overall feel for the history, culture, and abundant natural beauty of the state.”, —carlton h., read more 5-star reviews, get the latest news & updates, book a relaxing alaskan retreat, please confirm you are a person..

Good morning

Good evening

"Alaska is one of the most impressive places on earth and it’s always a pleasure to watch our guests discover our incredible glaciers, fjords, mountains and people, gaining a deeper appreciation for our beautiful planet."

Travel Director

Cruise Prince William Sound Glacier

You won’t want to blink when we take you on a glacier and wildlife cruise around Prince William Sound. The towering ice cliffs of the Columbia Glaciers have carved giant blue icebergs into the bay, and you’ll have the chance to spot seals, otters, porpoises and sea lions as you sail around the glaciers.

Admire Alaska’s majestic highways

Home to some of the world’s most scenic highways, we’ll take you on an unforgettable drive when we travel Alaska. Catch sight of Mount Denali on the Denali Highway, see the snowy summits of the Alaska Range on the Richardson Highway, and journey into the clouds along the Top of the World Highway.

Take an iconic train journey through Alaska's wilderness

One of the best ways to discover Alaska is by train and our Alaska tours will take you winding through the wilderness on an iconic train journey aboard the Alaska Railroad. Relax in a deluxe dome railcar and keep your eyes peeled as you journey through the stunning valley landscapes.

Visit Denali National Park

Of all the things to do in Alaska, Denali National Park is one of the most memorable. This untamed wilderness is full of pinch-me moments, like hiking through remote landscapes, rafting the wild waters of the Nenana, discovering rare subarctic wildlife, and learning about the Alaskan natives who once lived in the park.

Enjoy a city tour of Anchorage

As the biggest city in Alaska, Anchorage is the perfect launch pad to your adventure through the state. But first, we’ll take you on an Anchorage tour to discover this buzzing city and learn more about Alaska’s native cultures. Be sure to check out all the city’s fantastic parks, markets and museums.

Our top 5 things to do in Alaska

From exploring the fjords and glaciers of the national parks, to driving the scenic highways, you’ll get to see the best of Alaska with our Alaska cruises and tours.

Wrangell St Elias Visitor Center

We’ll make a stop at the fantastic visitor center for Wrangell St. Elias National Park, the largest national park in the USA. Established in 1980, the park is part of a massive World Heritage Site and the visitor center is full of fascinating information on local history, maps, hiking trails, and local plants and animals.

Valdez Museum

We’ll dive into the unique heritage of Valdez with a visit to the Valdez Museum, where you'll discover the city’s role in the salmon canning, fur trading and mining eras. Some of the top sights are the saltwater aquariums with the marine life of Port Valdez, a restored 1907 Ahrens ‘Continental’ steam fire engine, and a turn-of-the-century saloon bar.

Alaska Native Heritage Center

The Alaska Native Heritage Center is one of the best Anchorage museums, and we’ll take you there to get a deeper insight into Alaska’s native cultures and traditions. You can learn native dances, observe the making of traditional arts, and tour full-size replicas of Alaska native buildings, all while surrounded by peaceful wilderness.

Best museums in Alaska

Our Alaska holidays show you the vibrant history and culture of the state through the best Alaska museums, from native cultural storytelling to tales of the Klondike Gold Rush.

Reindeer Dogs

If you’re looking for Alaskan street food, it doesn’t get much better than reindeer dogs. They’re like hot dogs, but made with reindeer sausage, and we’ll show you where to find them on street corners all over the cities. Add on your favorite toppings like onions, mustard and ketchup and you’ve got the perfect snack.

Black cod and salmon

Fish takes a starring role in Alaskan cuisine and we can see why, as you can often get it caught fresh just a few meters from your dinner plate. The most popular fish is salmon and you can try it baked, grilled, broiled or smoked, while black cod is another favorite, especially when it's marinated and grilled to perfection.

Akutaq (also known as Eskimo Ice Cream)

Akutaq is not your usual ice cream. This Native Alaskan dish was traditionally made with the whipped fat from hunted animals like seals, bears and reindeer, mixed with snow and wild berries, but more recent versions make it with vegetable shortening and berries. We’ll show you where to find this tasty dessert to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Best food in Alaska

From the famously fresh fish pulled from the water, to the Alaska-style hot dogs and ice cream, there is no shortage of tasty Alaskan foods to try.

What to pack for Alaska

People packing for a tour

Waterproof coat

Even if you travel Alaska during the warmer months from May to September, you’ll still encounter temperatures anywhere from below freezing to around mid 20°C (mid-70s F), so bring a coat to stay warm.

Hiking shoes

Alaska is packed with spectacular parks and hiking trails. Pack a comfortable pair of walking shoes to see all the sights, from the Denali mountains to the Dawson gold mines.

Reusable water bottle

Help keep Alaska beautiful by using a reusable water bottle to avoid adding to waste with disposable plastic bottles. Remember to leave no trace when you visit the pristine national parks.

With some of the world’s most phenomenal landscapes, you can’t visit Alaska without bringing a camera to capture all the beauty. Bring a few extra SD cards too so you never run out of space.

Alaska Adventure - 20 Days

Infinite Adventures is the very very best!!!! We typically do a long trip every year and this one was the best we have ever done. My wife and two kids absolutely loved it. Dave, Tory, Nat, and Ellie made it very easy to enjoy Alaska's great outdoors without us having to plan or find the best spots. They know all the little details that made it fun. Their sense of humor was also a huge plus. After a day hiking glaciers or bear watching the camp sight was always fun and dinners/food was always on point. Natalie and Ellie made best scrambled eggs ever. Tory and Dave made best Salmon dinner's (they deserve at least one Michelin star). The bus ride was also fun, comfortable with good conversation and great music (Nat, please more ABBA next time LOL). Also, the group travel angle was great fun as we got to meet and bond with people from all over the world. Really wonderful group of people. We will definitely be doing another trip in future with Infinite Adventures and highly recommend it to others.

Alaska Denali Expedition - 12 Days Tour

Alaska Denali Expedition - 12 Days

Natalie and Dave go above and beyond to create the best experience possible! If you want luxury and pampering don’t do it! If you are prepared for simple but delicious food, sleeping in a sometimes wet or cold tent that you put up and take down, washing dishes and helping to load unload the bus, squatting in the brush/going days without a shower, and experiencing a variety of personalities, this will be the most memorable trip you ever take! The whole experience was amazing and certainly a bucket list adventure I wouldn’t have wanted to do any other way! Go with an open mind, a great attitude and you will laugh and gape in awe the whole way! I highly recommend!

We had a wonderful time. The tour was well planned and well managed. The CEO was excellent ..good driver, good communicator, had good knowledge of the local attractions and made great recommendations for restaurants. The group we were with was also a very pleasant group which made the experience that much more enjoyable. That said, would have loved to see the accommodations updated.. most except the Denali cabins were old and "weathered".

4 day Alaska Seward Camping Adventure from Anchorage

Amazing experience with Bindlestiff Tours! WOW - so much daylight! Especially in June!! We were a party of 4 - mom, dad and kids (teenage) traveling from Minnesota. This was our first trip to Alaska - and one of the first ""group"" trips we did in this style with the kids. We enjoyed integrating our kids into this way of travel, along with other travelers, in such a beautiful nature settings. It was really a hit - our kids LOVED the guide (Joe) - he was young (20's) and energetic and kept them entertained, and they loved helping with daily tasks around camp. About the tour - really inclusive and packs a big punch for 4 days! The daylight into midnight was really wild - we are happy we listened to the great packing list Bindlestiff provided (telling us to bring eye masks) - they really help! This tour company is awesome. They know what they are doing, and we always felt prepared from day 1 meeting the group and guide. Tons of sites on this tour - but our favorite was hiking to the Harding Icefield on day 1. We had good weather and had a clear shot of EXIT glacier - and even hiked in a little bit of snow! A big thank you to our guide and Bindlestiff for the organization and effort that goes into these trips. We are thinking about coming back next year for the 11-day Interior AK tour - it looks great!

ALASKA - BEST TOUR EVER!! Sooooo much fun! From the beginning of booking - this was a great experience. Thank you, Bindlestiff and our guide - Marie, for a fantastic trip. Lots of organization goes behind these tours - and this company does a great job. SO many cool spots to see - definitely worth going to Alaska for a longer amount of time - if you can. We unfortunately didn't get to see Denali, she was hiding. But we saw Grizzly Bears! Super neat. The park bus ride was a great-included activity to this trip. Camping in McCarthy was fascinating and different than I expected. So remote and beautiful. Bring good quality gortex rain gear (artery'x) - and listen to the packing list they provide. I loved the commentary all throughout the tour - and interesting gold mining stories our guide told. Native history and exhibits are very well-preserved as well - which we learned about in each location. So great to see this state is really protecting its past, present and future - for travelers to learn about. Thank you Bindlestiff for a fantastic trip. We will certainly book with you again in the lower 48 next time!

Escorted & Package Tours in Alaska

Hundreds of thousands of visitors come to Alaska each year on escorted package tours, leaving virtually all their travel arrangements in the hands of a single company that takes responsibility for ushering them through the state for a single, lump-sum fee. Many others cut the apron strings and explore Alaska on their own, in the process discovering a more relaxed, spontaneous experience. Each approach has advantages and disadvantages, of course, and which way you choose to visit depends on how you value those pros and cons.

An escorted package tour provides security. You'll know in advance how much everything will cost, you don't have to worry about making hotel and ground-transportation reservations, you're guaranteed to see the highlights of each town you visit, and you'll have someone telling you what you're looking at. Often a package price saves money over traveling at the same level of comfort independently. If there are weather delays or other travel problems, it's the tour company's problem, not yours. Everything happens on schedule, and you never have to touch your baggage other than to unpack. If you sometimes feel like you're a member of a herd on an escorted tour, you'll also meet new people, a big advantage if you're traveling on your own. Many passengers on these trips are retired, over age 65.

If you're short on time, escorted package tours make the most of it, as they often travel at an exhausting pace. Passengers get up early and cover a lot of ground, with sights and activities scheduled solidly through the day. Stops last only long enough to get a taste of what the sight is about, not to dig in and learn about a place you're especially interested in. On an escorted trip, you'll meet few, if any, Alaska residents, since most tour companies hire college students from "Outside" (a term Alaskans use to refer to anyplace other than Alaska) to fill summer jobs. You'll stay in only the largest hotels and eat in the largest, tourist-oriented restaurants -- no small, quaint places loaded with local character. For visiting wilderness, such as Denali National Park, the quick and superficial approach can, in my opinion, spoil the whole point of going to a destination that's about an experience, not just seeing a particular object or place.

It's also possible for an independent traveler to obtain some of the predictability a package tour provides. You can reserve accommodations and activities and control your expenses by using a good travel agent experienced in Alaska travel. Some even offer fixed-price itineraries that allow you to travel on your own. But independent travelers never have the complete security of those on group tours. Once you're on the road, you'll be on your own to take care of the details, and weather delays and other cancellations can confound the best-laid plans. If you can't relax and enjoy a trip knowing unforeseen difficulties could happen, then an escorted package tour is the way to go.

Large Tour Companies

A single cruise-ship company, Carnival, dominates the Alaska package-tour market operating under various brands. The "vertically integrated" operations allow the company to take care of everything you do while in Alaska with tight quality control. Holland America and Princess, both owned by Carnival, developed independently as the primary competitors in Alaska and still offer different brands, although the quality level is similar and the facilities are often in direct competition. With either, you can buy tours as short as a couple of hours or sign up for your whole vacation. All can be booked directly or through any travel agent. Other cruise lines also offer land tours, but typically only for their own passengers. If you will cruise to Alaska and want to add an escorted land tour, check for deals with your own cruise line first.

Independent Travel Planning

With this guide, you can book everything yourself, but for a long trip, it can get quite complicated to keep track of all the dates and deposits. If you're using a trusted travel agency to make trip arrangements, our reviews can help you make informed decisions. Read through the book, make your selections, and approach the agent with as detailed a plan as possible, derived from your own research. Then let the agent make the bookings you have chosen. Most agents who don't specialize in Alaska are aware of only the biggest attractions and best-marketed companies. Another option is to use a travel agency or trip planner based in Alaska. They'll know much more about the place and can help you more in picking out what you want to do.

Unfortunately, there are cautions to be offered in using the agencies. They work on commission, which means they're being paid by the establishments you're buying from. A good agent will disregard the size of the commission and really look out for you, but we've encountered too many visitors on poorly planned itineraries not to advise caution. Some travel agents book visitors on trips to far-flung corners of the state in quick succession, so they wind up staying only briefly in expensive places and then zoom off somewhere else, all with little concern for the visitors' true interests. Your best defense is to do enough research that you can actively participate in the planning.

Here we've gathered the names of some agencies that book Alaska trips. Expect to pay booking fees and to have the agent collect commissions from the businesses you use. Our knowledge of these agencies is limited to contacting them as a journalist, so a mention here is no guarantee; however, all of these have been around for several years, and we remove agencies from the list when we receive justified complaints.

Note : This information was accurate when it was published, but can change without notice. Please be sure to confirm all rates and details directly with the companies in question before planning your trip.
