Balos Beach (Balos Lagoon) | Guide + Tips | Crete

How to visit balos beach the definitive guide.

You want to visit Balos Beach  (sometimes also called Balos Lagoon) during your stay in Crete ?

Great idea!

Balos Beach and its magnificent turquoise lagoon is simply one of the most beautiful beaches in Crete.

In this guide, I will tell you everything you need to know to plan your visit: how to get to Balos Beach by car, by boat or with a guided tour as well as all my best tips for a perfect day.

You will see, with all my best tips and practical information , you will be able to organise your day at Balos Beach very easily!

So, let’s plan your visit to Balos Lagoon!

Balos Beach – One of the most beautiful beaches in Crete

1. boat trip to balos lagoon from kissamos, 2. day trip to balos lagoon from chania, 3. day trip to balos from rethymnon, 4. day trip to balos beach from heraklion, 5. private cruise to balos, 6. rent a boat to go to balos beach, going to balos beach by car, 1. swimming in balos beach, 2. visit balos on foot, 3. water activities in balos, where to eat in balos, what are the things to take when visiting balos lagoon, how long does it take to visit balos beach, falassarna beach, the botanical garden of crete, balos beach hotel, stay in kissamos and take the boat to balos, stay in chania, renting a boat in crete, how to go to balos beach, where is balos lagoon located in crete, when to go to balos, balos or elafonisi lagoon, you’re traveling to crete these articles will help you.

Balos beach is one of the top 3 most beautiful beaches on the island and is often ranked first.

Balos is located in the north-west of Crete , at the end of the Gramvoussa peninsula. If you are planning an itinerary in Crete , you must absolutely include this beach in your scheduled visits.

Once there, you will discover a lagoon divided in two by a sandbar and shallow translucent waters on either side.

In some places, the sand even has a slight pink colour (similar to Elafonissi beach , another very famous beach in Crete), which gives the place even more charm.

How to get to Balos Lagoon – The 6 options

To get to Balos Beach , you will mainly have the choice between going there by car or opting for a boat trip.

If you are in a hurry and just want to book your boat trip to Balos without reading the entire guide, I have selected here the 2 best cruises to go to Balos Lagoon. Just click on the orange links to book:

  • Cruise to Balos Lagoon from Kissamos : a day trip to Balos.
  • Chania to Balos: pick up by bus in front of your hotel in Chania + cruise from Kissamos to Balos.

I will now explain all the ways to reach Balos Lagoon.

Visit Balos Lagoon by boat

There are boat trips to Balos from several Cretan towns.

This is the most classic way to go to Balos Beach and the lagoon : choose a boat trip during the day.

But where do you take boat to Balos?

The boat leaves from Kissamos, a town located north-west of Crete , 38 km from Chania.  You can drive to the hotel and leave your car in the free car park at the port . You can also take the bus from Chania (departure from the bus station).

As part of this superb voyage, you will start along the coast before reaching the first stop of the day*: the Gramvoussa island. You will have about 2 hours to swim on the pretty beach and/or go up to the 16th century Venetian fortress.

The boat then leaves, and after about 20 minutes, reaches Balos where you will have the chance to spend the rest of the day swimming in the crystal clear waters. Deckchairs and parasols can also be rented at Balos beach for just €10 and €2.

You can also walk a little to Cape Tigani . To know the things to do in Balos, just read the rest of the article. 😊

In the late afternoon, the boat will take you back to the port of Kissamos.

*The order may be reversed: first Balos, then the stop at Gramvoussa.

To book your boat trip to Balos Beach by boat from Kissamos , just click on the button below:

  • Be sure to arrive at least 30/40 minutes before the cruise departure time. You should allow time for everyone to board the boat if you want it to leave on time. You can also choose the best seats!
  • The boat has a bar and a small restaurant but you still take your own picnic materials.
  • Sneakers are recommended to go up to the fortress of Gramvoussa.

Lagon de Balos

If you have not rented a car for your stay in Crete , you can also go to Balos through a trip from Chania.

The bus will pick you up directly from your hotel or at a meeting point nearby (you will receive an email with the exact location and time after your booking). It will then take you to Kissamos where you will take the boat to Balos.

The boat trip is exactly the same as the one I just told you about with a:

  • Stop on Gramvoussa island
  • A swimming stop in Balos Lagoon.

At the end of the day, the boat returns to Kissamos where you’ll have to wait for your bus to take you back to Chania. This is really the best way if you don’t want to bother with organisational issues, everything is taken care of from start to finish.

To book your trip from Chania to Balos Lagoon , just click on the button below:

Gramvoussa

Your 3rd option to visit Balos beach is to go on a day trip from Rethymnon .

It’s the same as from Chania, with a bus that will pick you up from your hotel in Rethymnon, takes you to Kissamos to take the boat and go to Balos Lagoon.

Click on the green button below to book your boat trip to Balos:

If you aren’t planning to stay in Chania during your tour in Crete , this organised trip is also available from Heraklion (even if it starts to be a little far away for the bus ride):

  • Departure from Heraklion by bus early in the morning
  • Arrival at Kissamos and boarding the boat
  • Stop at Gramvoussa
  • Swimming at Balos Beach
  • Return by boat and bus to Heraklion in the evening.

For those who want to visit Balos Lagoon without other tourists, I have the perfect boat trip for you: a private cruise!

For 4 hours , you and your family or group of friends (up to 5 people) will get the services of a captain who will take you to Balos and Gramvoussa in a semi-rigid inflatable boat.

Snacks and drinks are included in the fare.

Snorkelling equipment (mask, snorkel, flippers) is also provided.

This private boat trip to Balos starts from the port of Kissamos . Guests can choose between departure at 8:30 a.m. and a departure at 3:30 p.m.

In both cases, this let’s you have a much quieter time in Balos because the big boats arrive later in the morning and will already be gone if you choose the afternoon departure.

To book this half-day trip by boat to Balos Beach , just click on the button below:

If you’re looking for a more upscale private cruise, you must choose the private day trip in a sail boat.

The boat can accommodate up to 6 people and leaves Kissamos around 11:00am. After a 90 minute trip where you can gaze upon the coast, you will arrive at Balos Lagoon for a swim break.

You will then leave for Gramvoussa where you can also swim or climb up to the fortress.

The trip also includes an excellent lunch cooked on board and drinks.

If you have your boat licence , you can also rent a boat to go to Balos Lagoon.

It’s also a great idea if you want to visit Balos with family or friends and have a quiet time, deciding your own schedule and where you want to swim.

The easiest way is to rent a boat in Kissamos.

To rent a boat and spend a wonderful day in Balos Lagoon and its surroundsings, you should use Samboat . They simply have the most complete offer for boat rental!

eau turquoise lagon Balos

As I said a bit earlier, you can also get to Balos Lagoon by car.

From Chania , it takes about 90 minutes by car , but you should be aware of some specific points.

Entry to Balos by car is charged: €1 per person. To be paid to the guard in a shack on the right of the road, about 10 km before arriving in Balos.

From the shack, the road turns into a rather rugged track with many stones and large potholes.

That’s why no car rental company in theory allows you to take this track to Balos in a rental car. It will be made clear in your contract that you won’t be covered in case of damage and that if you break down, everything will be at your expense.

If you want to take this risk, you should know that if you drive slowly and leave enough space between the car in front (to avoid getting hit by breaking stones), you won’t need a 4*4 to cover the 8 km of track up to Balos (about a 25 minute drive).

This will become evident when you see the number (and types!) of rental cars that are in the car park! A gentleman will tell you where to park your car.

The car park at Balos is free and has a small snack bar and a paid toilet (€1).

From the car park, you can reach Balos Lagoon on foot via a path that goes down about 1.2 km and descends 150 metres (which you have to climb at the end of the day, which is a little harder 😅).

You must wear sneakers and not flip-flops.

If you are having problems climbing back up, a gentleman will offer you a horseback ride for the return trip.

You must reach Balos Beach by car before 11:00am as after the car park will be full.

Otherwise, you will have to park by the road, which is clearly less practical given its layout and which will greatly increase the walking time to reach the lagoon (the line of parked cars can stretch for miles in summer!).

The best view of Balos Lagoon when going down the path from the car is just before the gentleman who keeps the horses. This is where the most famous photographs of Balos are clicked!

The 3 Best Things to Do in Balos Lagoon

Now that you know how to get to Balos by boat or car, here’s what you can do once you get to the lagoon.

Since Balos Lagoon is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Crete, you must of course take the opportunity to swim!

It has everything to allow you to spend a heavenly day: fine sands, crystal clear turquoise waters at the ideal temperature, and the little fish to watch.

Between swims, you can relax on your deckchair under a parasol. In this regard, I would like to say that I was very surprised (favourably) by the price of the deckchairs/parasols at Balos beach: only € 10 for 2 for the day.

It’s a good change from the prices at the French Riviera where the beaches aren’t even as pretty as those in Balos!

You must also alternate swimming with small walks at Balos.

You just have to cross the sandbar to get to Cape Tigani. From there, you must take the path that leads to the small chapel , then for the bravest among you, continue on the same path to reach a sublime panoramic view overlooking the entire Balos Lagoon.

If you have chosen a boat trip and you have therefore arrived directly by sea, you must make the effort to cover part of the trail that goes up to the car park.

This is where you’ll have the best view of Balos Beach and the island of Gramvoussa.

Do you want to make the most of your visit to Balos Beach by trying some water activities ?

Well unfortunately, it won’t be possible , you won’t be able to do any water activities in Balos because the area is a protected natural site.

Tips and practical information for your visit to Balos

As I was saying, Balos is a Natura 2000listed site, so there are certain regulations that must be complied with to protect the flora and fauna . As such, most restaurant-type constructions are forbidden to preserve the place.

On Balos beach, there is only one snack bar offering sandwiches and drinks.

If you have taken the classic boat trip from Kissamos, you can eat directly on the boat.

At Balos car park you will also find a small snack bar.

The best option for eating in Balos is to have a standard picnic . It will be cheaper and certainly be better!

Here’s a the list of useful things to take when visiting Balos Lagoon:

  • Sunscreen – There is simply no shade on the beach. If you don’t want to spend the rest of your holiday in Crete tanned red, you know what to do.
  • Water – Of course, you can buy it on the boat or in the snack bars, but not at the same price as in any Cretan supermarket.
  • Sneakers – Necessary if you are arriving by car or if you want to reach the viewpoints of the lagoon.
  • Cash – To pay the entrance fee of €1 when arriving by road or if you want to go to the toilet (€1).

If you have taken the boat trip, consider 1 day in Balos because for all trips, the boat leaves in the middle of the morning and returns to the port of Kissamos in the late afternoon.

For those coming by car: between the return journey on the track, the descent (and the ascent!) on foot + time to enjoy (even if it is a minimum of one hour), plan a minimum of half a day.

If you can, reach Balos as soon as possible to avoid the crowd that arrives with the boats or in the late afternoon when everyone has left.

What are the things to do around Balos beach?

Here is my selection of the best places to visit near Balos beach.

Close to Balos (40 minutes by car), you must visit Falassarna beach .

It’s an excellent beach with translucent waters and pink sand on the water’s edge. A large part of the beach is private, with many Beach Clubs that offer deckchairs and parasols at reasonable prices.

You will easily find a parking space on the large car park or along the road.

Coming from Balos, on the road that goes down to Falassarna, you also have several taverns with a very nice view.

Falassarna beach Crete

On the road between Balos and Chania , you can make a small detour to visit the Botanical Garden of Crete.

A 2.5 km walk (around a 90-minute visit) will allow you to explore a wide variety of plants and fruit from all over Greece and the whole world. It is a really nice place where you can even admire the many peacocks walking freely in the park.

There is also a restaurant (which I recommend!), a bar and a shop selling local produce.

Entrance fee: € 6 with a small bottle of water offered per person, which is very nice!

Jardin botanique Crète

Chania is the closest major city to Balos Beach.

In Chania, you shouldn’t miss:

  • The Old Venetian Port and its piers lined with restaurants
  • The old town, very picturesque and full of shops
  • The Chania Maritime Museum, located on Fort Firkas
  • The covered market to soak up the local flavours.

For your visit to Chania , you must read my article right here: What are the best things to do in Chania?

So, what are you waiting for to book your boat trip in Crete? 😊

FAQ – I’ll answer your questions about Balos Beach

To get to Balos Lagoon, here is a summary of all the options :

  • Boat trip from Kissamos – The classic!
  • Chania to Balos trip (boat included!)
  • Trip from Rethymnon with cruise to Balos
  • Trip from Heraklion + boat to Balos Beach
  • 1/2 day private cruise
  • Private sailboat cruise in Balos – 1 day
  • Boat rental
  • By car via the 8 km track.

Balos Lagoon is located at the far north-west of Crete , at the end of the Gramvoussa peninsula.

To go from Chania to Balos , it takes about 90 minutes by car.

Balos Lagoon is accessible throughout the year by car.

Boat trips are only available from April 30 to October 30.  You won’t be able to visit Balos by boat in winter.

The best time to visit Balos Lagoon is during the months of May, June, September and October . You can swim, enjoy the beach and there are fewer people than in July and August.

For a visit to Balos in summer , you should expect crowds and the weather will be very hot. Going to Balos by boat will be a more pleasant option as it will avoid the hike to reach the car park in the sun. If you are coming by car, you should arrive as soon as possible to get parking space.

Are you choosing between a day at Balos or at Elafonissi ?

It’s not easy to choose between two of the most beautiful beaches in Crete! And I won’t be able to help you much because for me, you absolutely must visit both during your stay in Crete.

I’ll still give you my opinion to help you.

Balos Beach offers a heavenly landscape, less classic than Elafonisi and which you won’t find anywhere else. You can also take a nice boat trip to get there, which is not the case for Elafonisi.

Elafonisi is more easily accessible by car or bus (no track) and is much more developed : large car parks all around, restaurants. With children, for example, it is more practical than Balos.

And its pink sand gives it a lot of charm. In Elafonisi, you can also always find a quieter place to swim. In Balos, everyone is gathered in the same place on the sandbar.

The practical information to get to Elafonissi is in my article: Visit Elafonissi beach.

A visit to Balos Beach ended up being one of my favourite things I did in Crete. The scenery is even more beautiful than photos can depict. I’ve got everything you need to plan the perfect visit to Balos Bay and tons of photos in case you need more convincing.

Visiting Balos Beach Lagoon in Western Crete

I visited Balos as part of my road trip to Crete and visit to Athens and it ended up being a highlight of Greece for me. You can find all the technical information on how to best visit Balos Beach at the bottom of this post, but first let me tell you my experience and why you should visit Balos Beach

Waking Up Early for Balos Lagoon

It’s not very often I can say I’ve woken up at 4:30 AM and had a perfect day. In fact, I’m going to go on the record as saying it’s the only time it’s happened.

Rising before the sun is generally not my thing. But on this particular day, I was too excited to sleep. I had been looking forward to visiting Balos Beach before I even planned my trip to Crete. The views looked amazing and  I couldn’t wait to get there.

Sunrise over Kissamos Bay, Crete

Driving Gramvousa Peninsula

I chose to drive instead of taking the boat. Mostly because I already had a rental car and liked the freedom of being able to arrive and leave when I wanted to. It turned out to be the perfect decision for me.

While researching Crete, I had seen many accounts of the drive to Balos Beach being terrible. Many advised against driving, saying that it’s very possible to damage the underside of your car. After looking at some videos of the road I decided to risk it anyways.

A dirt road on the cliffside of Kissamos Bay, this road takes you to the parking lot for visiting Balos Bay Lagoon

On the dirt road up to the parking lot of Balos the sun just started to peak over the mountains. The only car on the road, the experience felt magical. Driving slowly, I put the window down and gazed over the water and sunrise.

A heard of goats look out over Kissamos Bay as the sun rises

I started to notice something, hundreds if not thousands of small insects flying up the mountain. It was bees. Making their morning commute to the wildflowers to bring back nectar and pollen to their hives. I couldn’t believe it. Up with the bees.

Of course, this is Greece so there were also small herds of goats dotting the mountainside as well.

A tree grows sideways on the shores of Kissamos Bay in Crete

Entrance to Balos Beach Parking Lot

The road itself wasn’t bad at all. It is narrow at some points and there are no guard rails so you do have to be mindful of how you drive. It took about 20-30 minutes to drive up because I did stop to take photos. Towards the top there is a gate. Now normally at this gate they collect a small fee for parking at Balos Beach so make sure you have change.

When I arrived at the gate it was locked. I wasn’t anticipating it so I got out to look if it was just an open and drive on and close behind you situation or a wait situation. While I investigated, a very disoriented man came out of the small building that is there. I’m pretty sure he was a goat herder and this poor man was so confused he came out in only his underpants and a shirt. He went to grab pants and then opened up the gate so I could drive through. My apologies to this Greek man for arriving so early.

Being the first person there, the parking lot was empty.

Hiking to Balos Beach

The sun had almost completely risen above the mountains but there were still long shadows creating really beautiful lighting over the landscape. Out of the car and on the short walk to the lookout points over Balos Beach the soil took on a red Martian-toned landscape with the glowing light of the sunrise. Am I romanticizing it a little bit? Possibly, but it truly felt like a special experience.

Women with back to camera hikes with backpack along a trail with mountains to get to Balos Beach

With time, more goats were awakening and charged past, eager to get to new grazing grounds. I arrived at the first lookout point over Balos Beach and was blown away. You know how sometimes you’ve seen plenty of photos and know what to expect but still end up impressed. This was that. It was way better than I was expecting.

Red stone stairs down to Balos Beach with a herd of goats and an impressive mountain in the background

The walk down didn’t take too long, about 30 minutes, but I realized I would not want to do this late in the day as there is no place to hide from the sun.

The beach itself has change rooms, a food stand, and some paid bathrooms as well. There are also lots of paid sun loungers if you are staying awhile.

Exploring the Pink Sand Beaches of Balos Lagoon

I wandered along the beach, looking for the fabled pink sand of Balos Beach. There isn’t much here, you do have better luck at Elafonisi Beach or nearby Falasarna Beach but there are still little pockets of pink sand along the waterline. The pink sand gets it colour from the crushed red shells of microorganisms found in the waters here. As tempting as it is, it’s important not to remove this sand from the beach as the pink sand is decreasing with increased tourism.

Red and pink sand made from crushed shells can be found on the beach at Balos Bay

The water here is unbelievably clear and beautiful shades of teal. I felt more like I was in the Rosario Islands of the Caribbean than Southern Europe. Balos Beach is one of the most beautiful sandy beaches in Europe .

Of course, a visit to the beach wouldn’t be complete without goats. They are a bit shy but they do graze alongside the beach.

A goat eats some grass on the beach with Balos Lagoon and cliffs behind it

By the time I was done exploring, I had spent about 2 hours at Balos Beach and tourists were just starting to arrive as I left.

Crystal clear water that is separating two white sand beaches with an island rising in the background

Hiking Up from Balos Beach

The walk up the mountain back to the car isn’t too bad but even by 8:30 AM the heat of the sun is starting to build. If you are planning to do this later in the day I recommend lots of water, a good sun hat and maybe a sun umbrella if you are particularly sensitive.

The parking lot was starting to fill up as I drove out. The drive down the mountain was only about 15 minutes but there was a steady stream of oncoming vehicles.

View of Balos Lagoon with loungers and umbrellas with Gramvousa Island in the background

Amazing Morning at Balos Beach Lagoon

This next part felt like a huge win. After being up for hours, I made it back to the hotel just in time to catch the tail end of breakfast and have a mini feast of Greek breakfast items like olive oil chocolate cake, Greek salad, and yogurt with honey. Cretan honey is a must try, I have to believe it is because the bees work so hard and commute up a mountain to get the best wildflowers.

Visiting Balos Beach was just the start of the perfect day because I still had an entire day to fill so I decided to head to Elafonisi Beach afterwards. I had planned them to be too separate days but I just was too excited to be in Crete so I ended up combining the day. If you’re more chill, you can easily spend most of the day relaxing on the beach at Balos and swimming in the waters there.

How to Get to Balos Beach

If you want to visit Balos Beach you have two main options: Drive to the parking lot above Balos Beach, or get a boat from Kissamos to Balos Beach and Gramvousa Island. Balos Beach is on the West side of Crete so the closest major city is Chania.

Driving to Balos Beach

If you prefer being in charge of your own schedule and are comfortable with narrow dirt roads, then you can drive to Balos Beach. One of the disadvantages is to beat the crowds, you do have to be up early. I would aim to be at Balos around 9-10 AM, but definitely before noon.

This is a good time to mention that I highly recommend purchasing the extra car insurance for your rental car in Crete. It’s the only place I’ve had to make use of it as my car was bumped in a parking lot at Kourtaliotiko Gorge. In Crete, I used DiscoverCars to find the best deal on a rental car and added on their extra insurance as well.

Driving up the dirt road to the Balos Beach parking lot took a bit longer than I expected, almost 30 minutes.

The directions you find on Google Maps to Balos Beach are accurate but I did find it tricky to spot the correct turnoff from the main highway to Balos Beach.

Taking a Boat Cruise to Balos Beach and Gramvousa Island

The boat cruise does have advantages over driving as it’s the only way you can also visit Gramvousa Island which has a Venetian Fortress you can hike to with views of Balos. The ferries to Balos Beach leave from Kissamos Port around 10:30 AM so you don’t have to wake up as early as if you were driving yourself. The ferry is about 1 hour each way.

If you have a rental car you can book this ferry boat tour that leaves from Kissamos. There are also sailing tours that leave from Kissamos. If you are exploring Crete without a rental car, there are tour options that include a bus from Chania , Heraklion , or Rethymno .

Where to Stay Near Balos Beach

I recommend staying outside of a major city while visiting Balos Beach and other nearby beaches. You save time on driving and accommodation options are a lot more affordable than in cities like Chania or Rethymon.

I stayed for three nights in the area and would have happily stayed longer. Look for hotels around Falasarna or Kissamos while visiting this part of Western Crete. Many hotels in this area are seasonally operated only as winter is not a popular travel season in Crete.

Casa D’Irene Deluxe Hotel – I stayed here. I highly recommend this hotel. The room I stayed in also had a kitchenette and there was free parking available. There was a small rooftop pool and the best breakfast spread I had in Crete. Super cozy, great location off of the main highway. Would happily stay here again!

Kaliviani Traditional Hotel – This is the place to stay if you want views of Falasarna Beach from your room. This is in an excellent location as it is right on the road to Falasarna Beach. Beautiful rooms and balconies to watch the sunrise from.

Nautilus Bay Hotel – Located in Kissamos, this is the place to stay if you want to be on the beach. While the beach can’t compete with Balos Beach, it’s still a great option if you want to wake up to the sounds of the sea. Beautiful rooms, a pool, and a great location.

Balos Beach on Western Crete is one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece and is well worth a visit. You can visit by hiking to the beach or by taking a ferry. The beach itself has pink sand and welcoming goats that roam the shoreside.

Glad you enjoyed the post about Balos Beach!

Lovely helpful information. My husband and I are visiting in a couple months and want to go to Balos beach. We are planning on renting a car but a there are mixed reviews out there about whether you need a 4 wheel drive car or not. Did you need a 4 wheel drive car or would an all wheel drive car work?

Hi Melanie, When I visited Balos Beach I just rented a regular rental car, it wasn’t 4 wheel drive. The road to Balos is a dirt road and there are stones but at the time that I went there weren’t any ruts and it was dry so it was fine to use a car to traverse it. There were some large stones but if you are driving carefully you can see them and go around. If you are concerned about driving it, rather than the increased cost of a 4wd for your entire rental period, it may be more economical to rent the car and just drive to where the boat for Balos departs from in Kissamos.

Without a doubt, Balos Beach and lagoon is a freakin’ dream!

This past year, when Dan (the wanderful husband) and I went on our honeymoon to Greece, we spent one week on the beautiful island of Crete and had the amazing opportunity to visit Balos Beach, experiencing it in all its glory.

Featuring sparkling turquoise-blue waters, unbelievable views of the surrounding coastline, luscious sandy shores, shallow waters perfect for relaxing in, and countless beach chairs that make sun-bathing easy.

This makes it one of Crete’s most popular beaches. Even more impressive, Balos Beach is often listed as one of the best beaches in the world.

YOUR GUIDE TO VISITING BALOS BEACH ON THE ISLAND OF CRETE

Where is balos beach located.

First things first: where the heck is Balos Beach located on the island of Crete?

With Crete being a rather large island (it takes like four to five hours to get across the entirety of it!), you might not even know where this gorgeous beach is.

Balos Beach is located on the upper lefthand corner of Crete, near the area of Kissamos. There are two peninsulas that jut north from the rest of the island. Balos Beach is perched at the very tippy top of the far left peninsula. I’ve included a handy Google map below that points to its exact location.

It’s also worth noting that Balos Beach is located near Imera Gramvousa, also known as Gramvousa Island. If you take the ferry to Balos Beach, you’ll find that it generally stops here on the way! There’s a nice little beach, as well as an old Venetian fortress (called Gramvoussa Fortress) that you can hike to.

How to Get to Balos Beach by Car

Personally, we rented a car through Kayak when visiting Crete and drove to Balos Beach from Chania. This ended up being around a 1 hour and 20 minute drive. We stopped in Kissamos along the way for lunch, as you’ll find out below that Balos Beach has nearly zero facilities.

No matter where you’re staying, you’re going to have to take the notoriously bump Balos Beach road. This is about a 3.5 mile (5.5 km) stretch of sandy, rocky road. Beware, this road is minimally maintained, has no barrier (and a scary ledge) and can be insanely packed during peak tourist season.

Also, on some stretches, it will feel as though the bottom of your car is being jostled off and that all of its parts are falling out.

My personal tip is to take it easy and go slow. You’ll get there eventually!

Note that you have to pay a sort of Balos Beach “toll” to get to the peninsula. This cost €1 per person and is paid at a small booth located at the beginning of the Balos Beach road.

Top Tip: Doublecheck Your Car Rental Agreement

If you are considering visiting Balos Beach and lagoon by rental car, I would highly recommend checking with your rental provider on whether or not this is allowed.

Many rental car companies in Chania or near Chania Airport do not allow renters to take their car rental to Balos Beach, as the road there is seriously bumpy, not to mention on the edge of a cliff.

We didn’t realize this until after arriving back to our hotel and re-reading the car rental agreement… oops. If we were caught (thankfully we weren’t!), this could have resulted in a €300 fine.

Additionally, your car will likely not be insured if you go on the road to Balos Beach, which is worth noting.

To get around this, you can rent a car that’s specifically for off-roading, such as a Jeep. Otherwise, you can do what we (unknowingly) did and just risk it! But this is up to you.

balos beach tour crete

How to Get to Balos Beach by Boat or Ferry

If you don’t have a car and want to visit Balos Beach, you have a few options.

✓ Take the ferry from Kissamos Port to Balos Beach (€30 roundtrip for passengers who are 13+)

✓ Go on an off-roading tour to Balos Beach ( like this one )

✓ Rent a charter boat to take you there on a private tour (ranges from €500-1,000 per group, depending on where you’re departing from)

✓ Join a boat group tour from your area (e.g. Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion)

If you are part of a larger group, I would definitely explore the option of renting a charter boat or going on a private tour. This not only makes visiting Balos Beach much easier but it can work out pretty cheap if split amongst several people.

You can also customize where you want to stop! For instance, if you see a beautiful, secluded beach off in the distance, you can ask your boat driver to take you there. How fun!

Here are a couple private tours to check out: private tour to Balos Beach from Chania or private RIB cruise to Balos Beach from Kissamos .

If you’re staying in Chania, such as the Old Town, you could also just walk around the port and find countless boating businesses offering day trips to Balos Beach!

The Unavoidable Hike to Balos Beach

If you drive to Balos Beach, you unfortunately have to then hike down to the actual beach. (Which sucks after that horrendous car ride, but hey, it’s all part of the adventure, right?)

The hike is around 1.7 miles (2.7 km) out and back, so a little less than one mile to the beach from the car park. You will probably even see some cute goats on your way there!

For this, I recommend wearing some good shoes… more on what you should wear to Balos Beach below!

balos beach tour crete

When You Should Visit Balos Beach

During peak tourist season, Balos Beach can get super busy ! Especially if you’re there when the ferries and all of their passengers are there. This means the beach will be packed with countless visitors.

(During the months of July and August, the ferry usually sells out — it has a capacity of around 1200 people!)

That said, you can work your schedule around the arrival and departure of the ferries, as this is how most Balos Beach visitors reach the area.

Personally, I would visit either early in the morning or later in the afternoon. Dan and I arrived at Balos Beach around 3 PM and it was perfect!

The ferry workers started rounding passengers up at around 4 to get them back on the boat and then it departed at 5 PM. This left the beach basically empty, aside from some that got to Balos Beach via car.

However, I would have actually really liked to experience the beach in the morning! I’m sure it was blissful with the morning sun, calm waters and desolate shores.

If you’re thinking of going in the morning, plan to arrive between 9 AM and 11 AM. The ferry from Kissamos gets there around 1 PM or 2 PM. When you arrive early, you can still have a pretty full day at Balos Beach–without the crowds!

What You Should Bring With You to Balos Beach

Because Balos Beach is quite remote, there are very minimal facilities and amenities there. This means no cafe, shop or proper toilets.

There are a couple W.C.s at the beach but their not anything to brag about… but in case you have to go, they are there! I think they may cost €1 to use but I’m not sure, as I didn’t use them.

During part of the year, you’ll also find a one or two small canteens selling bottles of water and some snack options at the beach. Additionally, there’s a small shop in the parking lot that sells food and drink options.

That’s about it, though! Not to mention, since there’s like one guy selling stuff, the prices are astronomically high… as they can easily get unprepared tourists to pay these ridiculous prices.

This is why I recommend bringing everything you need with you, including:

  • Lots (and lots) of drinkable water
  • Ample amounts of snacks
  • Snorkeling gear
  • Beach umbrella (if you’re prone to sunburns)
  • Lounge chairs (if you can carry them)

balos beach tour crete

What Should You Wear to Balos Beach?

If you’re taking the ferry to Balos Beach or a private boat tour, you can easily slip on a swimsuit, a sundress or shorts, some flip-flops and be just fine for the beach adventure.

However, if you’re like me and you plan to drive to Balos Beach, I would highly recommend wearing some proper shoes and comfortable clothing. While the hike is short, in the height of summer when the sun is beaming down, it can be exhausting .

Make yourself as comfortable as possible by wearing the right shoes and clothing. Personally, I wore my beloved Teva sandals and they were great for navigating the pebbly hiking trail, as well as the decline and incline to and from the beach.

Additionally, wear LOTS of sunscreen! The Greece sun is hot and spicy, and she can burn you quite easily if you have sensitive skin and are prone to sunburns.

Since Balos Beach is part of the sea, I would highly recommend getting a sea- and ocean-friendly sunscreen. You can find my personal sunscreen recommendations in this blog .

Other FAQs About Visiting Balos Beach

Where is the “pink” balos beach on crete.

While Balos Beach does have a few pinkish spots, you’re likely thinking of Elafonissi Beach, which is on the southwestern side of Crete.

Elafonissi Beach is known for its pink sands, sandy shores and crystal-clear blue waters. It’s definitely worth a visit but can be quite the drive to get to!

Is Balos Beach Worth It?

Ah, the golden question! Personally, I think Balos Beach is a little over-hyped BUT I really loved it. It’s truly stunning and like nothing I’ve ever seen before.

If you drive to Balos Beach and hike to the beach, your eyes are basically assaulted with the most beautiful views ever. Not to mention, on a good day, the waters are calm and clear, giving you the perfect opportunity to soak in the shallows and relax in the sun.

So, in my opinion, 100% worth it.

Does Balos Beach Have Umbrella?

Yes! Balos Beach has sunbeds and umbrellas that protect you from the strong Greece UV rays. You can typically rent one from about €15-30 per bed, depending on the time of year and how busy the beach is.

Note that if it’s windy–and Balos Beach can get very windy–the umbrellas might not be possible to put up.

Should I Visit Balos Beach From Chania?

When determining where to stay on Crete, I would definitely recommend Chania. Chania Old Town is absolutely gorgeous and it’s a super easy drive from Chania to Balos Beach.

Plus, there are an array of other things to do around Chania that you shouldn’t miss, like a vineyard and olive oil tour (I loved this one !), getting lost among the tiny streets of Chania’s Old Town, eating at all the delicious tavernas and exploring the gorgeous mountain range south of Chania.

What are Other Popular Beaches Near Balos Beach?

In addition to Balos Beach, you’ll find Falasarna Beach , the beaches around Kissamos , and the beaches along the west side of Crete are also popular among tourists and locals.

All in all, Balos Beach (and the entirety of Crete) is worth visiting. I loved every second of exploring this gorgeous Greek island and look forward to visiting again in the future!

A travellers guide to Balos Beach, Crete’s incredible beach (updated 2022)

Post updated 04-08-2020 | Crete is well-known for its white-sanded beaches and crystal clear Mediterranean sea, Balos Beach is no different. This guide contains everything to help you visit this paradisiac stretch of beach in the best possible way.

If you’re keen on uncovering Balos Beach, you’ll surely be welcomed by one of the most charming landscapes Crete has to offer.

Think exotic white-sanded beaches, shallow turquoise waters, and an incredibly picturesque backdrop, formed by Tigani and Gramvousa in the distance.

Although situated in the very northwest of Crete, between Kissamos and Gramvousa, Balos Beach feels like a tropical paradise in the midst of the Caribbean sea.

For that reason alone, it is considered one of the best beaches in the Mediterranean, and therefore an absolute must-see on any Crete trip.

If you’re preparing for a day trip to Balos Beach (which I think you should), look no further, this traveller guide includes everything you need to know, from how to get there, what to pack, and the best guided tours & boat trips – plus essential travel information.

A TRAVELLERS GUIDE TO BALOS BEACH, CRETE

Where is balos beach.

Balos Beach is a stunningly picturesque stretch of beach (arguably the best in Crete), situated in the very northwest of Crete, poised between Kissamos and Gramvousa.

Although Balos Beach is pretty remote, 191km of Heraklion, 116km of Rethymno, and 56km of Chania, it is clearly one of the favourite Crete beaches for travellers from all over the world.

HOW TO GET TO BALOS BEACH

Crete makes the perfect island for a banging road trip, and if you’re keen on exploring every corner of the island, renting a car is easily the best thing you could do.

If you’re planning to do so, you’ll have all the freedom to visit Balos Beach as early as possible – plus it’s significantly easier to explore other interesting places on Crete.

For car rental on Crete, I would recommend checking out Rentalcars.com . They offer excellent service, additional insurance, and a broad selection of cars, all at an affordable price.

The journey itself is pretty straightforward, as the roads on the island are in excellent condition. However, do keep in mind that the last 10 kilometres, starting at Kissamos, are off-road and bring you along a steep cliff edge.

If you drive slowly and conscious, it isn’t a big deal, yet it can be a bit challenging during the high season, when significantly more people visit Balos Beach by car.

That said, when planning to drive to Balos Beach with a rental car, check if you’re insurance is covering off-road driving. In most cases, this isn’t a problem, yet it’s better to be safe than sorry.

HOW TO HIKE TO BALOS BEACH

Once you reach the car park, and are ready to go, take a moderate 25-minute hike down, before arriving at the beach.

Along the way, you’ll pass several fascinating viewpoints, hordes of friendly-looking mountain goats, and a stall that offers donkey rides down to the beach.

If you’re following this blog a bit longer, you probably already know that I aim to travel in the most ethical way possible. For that reason, I would sincerely discourage using animals as form as transport.

We ourselves, did the hike at a slow pace, resulting in an excellent experience, with plenty of time to take some photos along the way, and I would highly encourage you to do the same!

Although the hike isn’t the most challenging, it is good to wear decent sneakers and bring extra drinking water (preferably a reusable water bottle ). Additionally, I would recommend bringing something to cover your head from the sizzling Mediterranean sun.

JOIN A BALOS BEACH TOUR

If a self-driving trip isn’t your cup of tea, that’s alright, there’s a great variety of guided tours available, including full-day trips, organized boat trips, and combinations of both.

Joining a guided tour comes without the hassle of driving off-road and saves you a short hike down – plus you won’t have to drive all the way back after an afternoon of swimming and relaxing.

On top of that, most tours include a visit to the charming island of Gramvousa, which makes the trip the absolute highlight of your time on Crete.

I saved you time by doing some proper research and made a list of the best Balos Beach tours.

The Balos Beach tours I recommend include:

From Heraklion: Full-Day Balos and Gramvousa Tour | A great 12-hour day trip to Balos Beach and Gramvousa.

Balos Beach and Gramvousa Day Tour from Chania | The absolute best option to visit Balos Beach from Chania.

SETTING FOOT ON BALOS BEACH

Following your journey, it is finally time to set foot on the incredibly appealing sands of Balos Beach, and trust me, arriving at the beach with no other being around is truly a mesmerizing experience.

Think exotic white sand, shallow turquoise waters, and stunningly beautiful scenery, with views of Tigani and Gramvousa in the distance.

Be prepared to be left in awe by the impressive colour palette of the water, and the pure beauty of the unique landscapes that surround you.

Other great beaches on crete.

Being the largest island in Greece, Crete comes with a coastline of approximately 1.046 km, resulting in a great variety of incredibly picturesque beaches, all with impressive clear turquoise water.

Some of my favourite Crete beaches include:

Elafonissi Beach | Named one of the world’s top 25 beaches by Tripadvisor in 2014, Elafonissi Beach is a charming beach that is well known for its pink sand. Located on the southwestern part of the island, Elafonissi was only known by locals not so long ago. At present, it is one of the absolute favourite Crete beaches to travellers and locals alike.

Where | Elafonissi Beach

Falassarna Beach | Situated at only a 20-minute drive of Kissamos, Falassarna Beach is a large stretch of fine-sanded beach, that is among the best beaches in Crete. Famous for its turquoise waters, this beach is perfect for an afternoon of relaxation. On top of that, it’s great if you’re into windsurfing.

Where | Falassarna Beach

Preveli Beach | Charmed by a river that flows directly into the sea, while also dividing the coastline, Preveli Beach is a small, yet incredible beach. The real draw though, it is significantly less busy than the aforementioned beaches, making it an excellent place to enjoy some alone time under the Mediterranean sun. Next to it, you’ll find the Preveli Monastery, which is more than worthy of your visit.

Things to do in Crete

WHERE TO STAY ON CRETE

Porto Veneziano Hotel | Close to the Venetian harbour of Chania but not in the busiest part of town. With a panorama view over the sea and harbour, excellent rooms and quality service this is one of the finest places in Chania.

Ammos suites | An aparthotel that has everything you need. The design of the room looks great and each room has a balcony or sun terrace. They have an outdoor swimming pool and the beach is within 10-meter walking distance. The town centre of Rethymnon is located within 800 meters.

Kalypso Cretan village resort & spa | If you come mainly to relax this place is amazing. Located between the mountains and directly at sea, this hotel provides the most stunning scenes. With facilities like an infinity pool, a private beach where you can dive and a spa this place will help you ease your body and mind. If you stay at Kalypso it would be wise to rent a car if you want to explore the island.

Abaton Island Resort & Spa | This is one of the finest looking resorts on the island. They offer luxurious guesthouses, suites and villas. The design is inspired by the surroundings and all accommodation options offer either an outdoor terrace, private pool or an outdoor hot tub.

Alternatively, use booking.com to find accommodations in Crete .

BEST TIME TO VISIT BALOS BEACH

If you’re after good weather, the summer months from July till early September will be your best bet. Do keep in mind that the prices are considerably higher, and expect way more travellers around.

In my opinion, the best time to visit Crete is during shoulder season, think May, June, September, and early October.

We visited Crete and Balos Beach in May, and had great weather throughout the entire trip – plus we had the advantage that the prices were slightly lower, as well as the fortune to escape the crowds.

BEST TIME OF THE DAY TO VISIT BALOS BEACH

Balos Beach is at its absolute best in the early morning, when the exotic white-sanded beach is not yet flooded with travellers and locals alike.

Alternatively, the afternoon is great for sunbathing, swimming, and relaxing, so make sure you bring a good book and some snacks.

Do bear in mind that it will be significantly busier than in the morning, as tourists from guided tours and boat trips will set foot on the coastline of Balos. The good news though, they often stay for a short amount of time, resulting in an almost empty beach afterwards.

SAFETY IN GREECE | TRAVEL INSURANCE

While Greece is totally safe for travellers, I always aim to enter a foreign country with my travel insurance sorted out, and I highly advise anyone else to do the same.

Where we prefer to assume that everything runs smoothly during our travels, the reality is often that something can go wrong at any given moment – when that happens, it is better to be safe than sorry.

We did a private tour, and both our guide and our driver were outstanding. We saw beautiful sites, visited multiple towns, and we were even able to visit an olive oil factory that was closed for the season, but opened for us to see their factory and taste/purchase olive oil to take home. Fabulous day! Read more Written February 23, 2024
  • Camper454214 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Magnificent tour My family and I booked a tour with Snami travel for a mythical tour of Crete. Our tour guide was Alex and we had Aristotle as our driver Our driver was very warm and friendly. He did not speak much English but there was always a smile on his face and he was always happy to help or invite us to have some of his raki. I spent 4 days in Crete and drank way too much raki. The interesting thing is the drivers home made raki was probably the best raki I’ve had. The smell is a lot stronger than it is. After each shot you feel a warmth but there is absolutely no hangover or headache! Alex is such an amazing story teller. He was very fun, engaging, and thoughtful throughout the whole trip. Our family composed of 9 individuals whom ages ranged from 22 months to 70 years old. He made sure that everyone was happy, engaged, and comfortable throughout the whole trip. We learned about about the North and west side of Crete on our first day. We enjoyed his guidance so much that I asked if I could book another tour with Alex and our driver. Alex did a custom tour for us for the southern part of Crete. After spending two full days with Alex and Aristotle, I learned so much about the culture of Crete that I would not be able to find elsewhere. Crete is a beautiful island that can itself be its own country. Its history and culture is so unique and rich. The strategic location of Crete made it a blessing and a curse for how much triumph and conquers there has been. You can appreciate its history through the taste of their food. They have traditionally Greek food (meats/seafood with lots of oregano and thyme) yet with Turkish influences (cloves). The uniqueness of their cheese (made with goat). The romantic and beautiful scenary. The crazy myths that can be told of every rock formation. The charm of having a church in the middle of a gorge on a mountain. A island where you have the Mediterranean and the African weather. You will only find this in Crete. Alex showed me all of this. You won’t regret booking with Snami and having them shown you true Cretan hospitality and beauty that you and I would not be able to find on our own. Thank you for the wonderful trip Read more Written January 16, 2024

I'd originally booked the tour with Alexander, but he was unexpectedly unavailable and arranged for Elisavet to cover for him. While I'm sorry we couldn't go with Alexander, we all absolutely adored Elizavet (and Stefano, her driver)! She met us on time at the cruise ship terminal and we boarded a comfortable min-bus for the drive along the coast and then up into the mountains to visit Kavallos and Lake Kourn. Then further up off the beaten path to the mountain top village of Agryoupoli, but first stopping by the ruins of a 9th century Byzantine church where we had a picnic of local cheese, olives, oranges, and wine, together with a toast in Cretan raki from a bottle with no label! Continuing on to Rethymno we had a walking tour of the city and then had a delicious lunch at a small taverna somewhere in a maze of streets. Grilled calamari along with greens, and a glass of Cretan white wine is a fine way to complete an excursion. A little more raki and we were back on the bus and on our way back to the ship, which we made with plenty of time to spare before sailing. The day was unbelievable. Great weather with a compatible group of cruisers, an outstanding guide and hostess who clearly loved her homeland of Crete and a great driver. I couldn't have asked for more. If you're on a cruise ship visiting Chania (or Heraklion) be sure to consider booking an excursion with Snami Travel. Should I ever be back there, I know I will be seeing where else they could take me. Skip the boring ship tours and check out Snami Travel. Read more Written December 26, 2023

  • merixg2019 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Not What We Expected The reviews of this were so good, and the photos so stunning, that we decided to splurge on this experience for one of our two full days in Crete. However, the beaches look nothing like the photos anymore - supposedly tourists have been collecting the pink sand (colored by local shells and coral) to take home with them, that it's barely colored at all now. Also, even in shoulder season, the beach was PACKED with people. There were no chairs available to rent, and we barely found a place to put out towels. Lots of other beach-goers were wading around in the water carrying all of their stuff with them. It ultimately didn't matter too much, because we only had about an hour to send at Elafonsi, which included the 15-minute trek from the parking lot down to the beack, and the 20-minute trek back up the hill. The rest of the day was spent in the car! We didn't realize it was at least 3.5 hrs each way, a lot of which was on mountain switch-backs. Our guide was very pleasant, the car was comfortable, and we learned a lot about Crete. But it was definitely not the luxurious and relaxing experience we thought we signed up for. The taverna we were taken to for lunch was in a beautiful mountain town, and we enjoyed our meal, though it felt relatively pricey, around 40 Euros per person. I share this info to make sure people considering it know the details. It might have been different for us if we had another day to spend in Crete. But this was our one "beach day" that we planned, and we did not get to relax in the sun and enjoy the aquamarine waters like we dreamed about, so for the incredibly hefty price tag that came with it, we were ultimately disappointed. Chania to Balos

Balos Beach is one of the best and most popular beaches in Crete. It is a unique natural wonder offering breathtaking views and amazing turquoise waters that you’ll instantly fall in love with.

It’s part of a protected area under Natura2000, aiming to preserve the natural flora and fauna of the lagoon. The beautiful landscape is created by the Gramvousa island in the background with a sandbar dividing the lagoon in two.

On one side you have shallow water, perfect for enjoying a walk and for young children to swim in. And on the other side you can go deeper, perfect for enjoying a swim.

Moreover, what makes Balos special is that here you’ll also find stretches of pink sand similar to the famous Elafonisi beach.

Visit Balos Lagoon by boat

1. boat trip to balos lagoon from kissamos.

Boat trip from Kissamos to Balos

The easiest and most cost-efficient way to visit Balos is by boat trip from Kissamos to Balos Lagoon .

Kissamos is a small seaside town, located 38 km from Chania. You can either drive here and leave your car at the port’s car park. Or you can take the bus from Chania to Kissamos in the morning from the main bus station.

The cruise leaves in the morning, sailing along the coast with beautiful panoramas along the way. The first stop is at Gramvousa island. Here you have two hours to swim and/or go up to the 16th century Venetian fortress.

You also have time to try some delicious Cretan food on board and enjoy some light snacks and drinks.

After that, the boat continues for another 20 minutes on the beautiful Mediterranean to reach Balos. Here you get to spend the rest of the day relaxing and swimming in the stunning turquoise waters of the lagoon. There’s sun loungers and umbrellas available for rent at the beach.

The boat then takes you back to Kissamos in the late afternoon, from where you can drive back or take the bus back to Chania.

Note: Make sure to arrive at Kissamos port at least 30/40 minutes before the scheduled departure time.

The bus ride from Rethymno to Kissamos offers some beautiful views along the way of the bay of Souda and a glimpse of Chania. Once at Kissamos, you’ll board the boat which will take you to Gramvousa island and later to Balos Lagoon , where you’ll have plenty of time to swim in the stunning waters and enjoy the views.

This is the best and most hassle-free way to visit Balos from Heraklion, without having to worry about the distance and added logistics.

This trip is quite similar to the one from Chania and Rethymno, and includes a pick up from your hotel in Heraklion and a drive to Kissamos by bus, followed by a cruise from Kissamos to Balos.

This is my best pick for a private trip, but if you prefer to have your transport from Chania or Rethymno included then you can also check out this trip .

This is a great option if you’re travelling with your family or friends, and want to have a more special experience and create some amazing memories on board your private yacht!

Benefits of booking a boat trip to Balos Beach

Boat trip in Crete

Boat trips to Balos are a great option for anyone looking for a full day boat cruise that includes stops at both the magnificent Gramvousa island where you can hike up to a castle and swim in the crystal clear waters at the Balos Lagoon.

There are numerous different day trip options depending on your preference and your budget, from group boat cruises to private sailing trips .

One of the main benefits of booking a boat trip is that you don’t have to worry about buying boat tickets at the port or driving on dirt roads to get to Balos.

Not to mention, that most of the boat trips to Balos have a restaurant on board the boat so you can enjoy a delicious Cretan lunch on your trip . This is a big plus as there’s no restaurants in Balos Beach, only a small snack bar selling a limited number of packed sandwiches.

Driving to Balos Beach

Can you drive to Balos beach? Yes driving to Balos is possible

You might be wondering, can you drive to Balos? The short answer is yes, you can certainly drive to Balos. However, you can’t drive with just any car and you need to be prepared if you decide to do the trip there.

The drive from Chania to Balos Lagoon takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes for 53 km. Most of the trip is on the main road and easy to drive along. However, the last 7 km are on a dirt road alongside a cliff, which required a lot more careful and slow driving (taking half an hour of the total drive).

If you are an experienced driver the road isn’t too difficult to navigate, provided you are careful and driving slowly. It gets more difficult if it’s in peak season and there’s more cars coming both ways.

Balos By Car from Chania

However, you also have to keep in mind that most car rental companies only allow driving to Balos if you’re renting a 4×4 car . If you’re renting a regular small car you’re most likely to have a clause that forbids driving to Balos, making you liable to a fine if they found out you drove there.

There are many people who disobey this rule but in my opinion it’s not worth risking the fine if you get caught driving there!

✨ Entrance fees: After you’ve driven most of the way, there is an entrance point where you pay €2 fee per person to enter Balos Lagoon . Shortly after you’ll find a big open space car park where you can leave your car. Make sure to come early if you’re visiting in peak season as spots get filled quickly!

Balos Lagoon Hike

Balos Beach hike from carpark

From the car park, it takes approximately a 30 minute hike down to Balos Beach . There’s a 300 metres decline down some well built stairs, and the views over the Balos Lagoon make the dirt road drive and the hike worth it.

Keep in mind that there’s no shade whatsoever the whole way down, so coming here early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday sun is recommended.

balos beach tour crete

Another benefit of renting a car and driving to Balos is that you get to spend as much time as you wish and don’t have to worry about boat schedules . Balos is a truly stunning place and once you arrive, you’ll probably never want to leave.

The hike back up definitely kicks your cardio back up but once again the views over the lagoon make it all worth it!

Facilities at Balos Beach

balos beach tour crete

As it’s a fairly remote beach, there aren’t that many facilities at Balos Lagoon . There are no shops and only a small stall restaurant, so come prepared with anything you need for the day.

Food & drinks at Balos Beach

There’s only one small snack bar on the beach open from mid-April until the end of October . Here they serve packaged sandwiches, soft drinks and some alcoholic beverages.

The options are very limited and sell out quickly. There were also no vegetarian options available when we visited. They’re fairly overpriced for what you get, so I’d definitely recommend you bring some packed lunch and snacks with you.

Bathroom facilities

There are two bathrooms close by to the restaurant a little bit uphill. They’re usually locked and you need to get the key from the restaurant and pay €1 to use them.

Umbrellas and sun loungers in Balos Lagoon

Balos beach umbrellas and sun loungers

There’s plenty of umbrellas and sun loungers for rent on the beach. However, in peak season those do tend to sell out quite quickly.

The cost for a full day rental of one umbrella and two sun loungers is €20 for first row and €10 for second row onwards. This is based on prices in October 2023 so these may differ depending on when you visit.

Your boat from Kissamos may also have umbrellas available for rent so it’s worth asking on board. These usually cost €7 for the umbrella plus €5 deposit that you get back when you return the umbrella to the boat.

What to bring for your trip to Balos Beach?

Girl at a beach in Crete. Best beaches in Chania

No matter if you’re driving to Balos, joining an organised tour or taking public transportation, here are the things you should prepare to make sure you’re ready for your trip to Balos!

➔ Snacks, packed lunch and water – there’s limited food available at Balos beach.

➔ Cash – only cash is being accepted for the sun loungers and at the snack bar. You’ll also need it to pay for the car park (if arriving by car) and for the toilet (€1).

➔ Swimwear – so you can enjoy swimming in the beautiful sea.

➔ Reef friendly sunscreen – don’t underestimate the strong Greek sun!

➔ Trainers – recommended if you’re arriving by car so you can hike down comfortably.

➔ Towels – there’s no towels available to rent at the beach so bring some to help you dry off after swimming in the turquoise waters.

➔ Hat – super important especially if you’re driving and hiking down to the beach in the peak summer months.

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth going to balos beach.

Balos is definitely one of the must visit beaches in Crete that is worth seeing at least once on your trip. What sets Balos apart from other beaches in Crete is its

Is Balos better than Elafonisi?

Pink sand Balos beach

Both Balos and Elafonisi have stunning crystal clear water and soft white sands with stunning landscapes in the background. They also both have stretches of pink sand, making them some of the most beautiful beaches in Crete.

One of the factors that makes Balos better than Elafonisi is that Balos has both a shallow beach area and a swimming beach area . So depending on what you’re looking for, you can do both.

At Elafonisi, you only really have a very long stretch of shallow water so it’s not ideal for swimming unless you go very far out from the beach.

So even though both beaches are absolutely beautiful, for me Balos was better as it was perfect both for swimming and chilling on the beach. And you also get the magnificent Gramvousa island in the background that makes Balos one of the best beaches in Crete .

However, they’re both definitely worth a visit so you can see and decide for yourself which one wins the Balos vs Elafonisi battle.

Can you swim at Balos Lagoon?

Day trip from Chania, best beaches in Chania

Yes, you can swim in Balos Lagoon. In fact, Balos is one of my favourite beaches in Crete for swimming . The water is mind-blowingly beautiful and combined with the mountains in the background it creates a truly mesmerising view.

Final thoughts

Whether you’re visiting Crete for a few days or a couple of weeks, Balos Lagoon should definitely be part of your itinerary. Balos is undoubtedly one of the best beaches in Crete and combined with a stunning boat ride to get there, it makes for the perfect day trip in Crete.

If you’re looking for a bit of peace and tranquillity away from the busy tourist towns, and love crystal clear warm water, then a trip to Balos Beach and Gramvousa should be high up on your ‘to do’ list.

Balos is known to be the most photographed beach in Crete and is famous for its crystal blue waters and it’s wild natural beauty. You can easily spend a full day here relaxing in the Cretan sun and wading the warm water with the little fish.

It’s not all about Balos Lagoon, as Gramvousa is another place that’s definitely worth visiting. Located a few miles north from Balos by boat, this remote island is famous for its Venetian fortress and turquoise blue water. There’s also an old shipwreck, which provides dramatic coastal scenery and is the perfect place to snorkel.

Now, that’s our short introduction to these remote but popular destinations, let’s dive right into the finer details to help you plan your own visit.

Balos Beach travel guide - Shows a beautiful turquoise lagoon

Why should I visit Balos Beach and Gramvousa?

As you may have read already, Balos Beach is widely regarded as being one of the best places to visit in Crete. Combine that with the lesser visited Gramvousa, and you’ll have a destination that’ll most likely be the highlight of your trip to Crete. Here are the highlights and exactly why you should visit:

  • Clear, crystal blue waters that are pleasantly warm for you to go for a swim, even in the cooler months.
  • Stunning natural scenery at Balos Lagoon. Long sandy beaches surrounded a central lagoon and it’s like nothing you’ll have ever seen before.
  • You’ll get to see the beautiful Venetian fortress in Gramvousa, which has stunning panoramic views of the island. It’s a bit of a trek, but completely worth it for those views.

How to get to Balos Beach and Gramvousa

There are two ways to get to Balos Beach – by car, or by boat. Each has its benefits (as we’ll share below), but if you want to explore Gramvousa, the only way to do so is by boat.

We personally opted for the boat option, as we found it the most convenient, but we also wanted to see the island of Gramvousa. After boarding the ferry from Kissamos port, it then took around 1 hour 30 minutes to get to our first stop, Balos Lagoon, and then another 20 minutes to get to Gramvousa.

We went with Cretan Daily Cruises and paid 20 euros per person. This is the main boat that travels to Balos Beach and Gramvousa, and it was extremely big, with a capacity of around 800 passengers. They had both a lower, middle and top deck with plenty of seating. The ferry had several restaurants and stalls that served hot and cold food, cold beverages, and snacks too.

Whilst this is the main and most cost effective boat trip for exploring Balos and Gramvousa, if you’d prefer less crowds, you may wish to opt for a smaller, private boat tour. This is a lot more expensive, but worth doing if you don’t mind the extra cost.

Here’s the itinerary of the Balos and Gramvousa boat tour we did:

  • Departs Kissamos Port at 10am – free parking is available at the port
  • Sails 1.5 hrs to Balos Beach
  • 2.5 hours to explore Balos and relax on the beach
  • Lunch on the boat (extra cost)
  • 10 minute boat trip to Gramvousa
  • 1 hour to explore Gramvousa beach, fortress and bay
  • 1 hr 20 min trip back to Kissamos port for disembarkation

Our top tips for the Balos Gramvousa cruise:

  • When we visited, the ferry was extremely busy, so we recommend arriving at least 30 minutes before the ferry departs, so you can get yourself a good seat.
  • As the boat arrives in each destination, make sure you’re one of the first in the queue to leave. You’ll be one of the first off the boat this way and can secure a sun lounger before they fill up. You’ll also avoid the large queues to disembark.
  • Head back to the boat at least half an hour before departing Balos. You’ll find that there’s a lot less queues for lunch.

Other boat tour options:

If you’re looking to visit both Balos Lagoon and Gramvousa on a boat tour, then you might want to consider some of the tour providers below. If you book an early boat tour, you’ll get to enjoy the stunning beach locations for a couple of hours before the crowds arrive from the ferry boat. For a more intimate Balos Beach and Gramvousa excursion, we recommend checking out Seaze the Day Boat Tours .

If you’re looking to splash out on a more unique and personal tour, then you can hire a boat for the day (with a skipper). This is a good option for a large group (of around 9 people). You can beat the crowds of people and be free to arrive and leave whenever you like!

Local boat tours visiting Balos Beach

The other way to get to Balos Beach is by car. You can hire a car or book a private transfer to drop you off and pick you up. The main benefit of hiring a car to visit Balos is that you can arrive as early as you wish or stay as late as you wish, ensuring that you skip the huge crowds that arrive from the daily ferry boat. Arrive before 11am or after 2pm in the afternoon for a quieter experience.

The downside of getting here by car is that you can only visit Balos Beach – Gramvousa is only accessible by boat. The road here also isn’t the best. Expect 2 miles of slow driving on a gravel path, in which car hire insurance doesn’t cover you for if any damage is caused to the car.

Many people opt to visit Balos by car and parking is available a short hike up from the beach. It’s affordable and gives you the freedom to arrive and depart as you please. Entry to the Balos road costs a couple of euros and is payable in cash only.

The top things to do at Balos Beach

Balos Beach is a beautiful collection of beaches that surrounds a central lagoon. As such a vast area to explore (or simply relax), here are the top things to do whilst you’re there.

Explore the lagoon

The highlight of any Balos Beach visit is wading and bathing in its shallow, crystal clear waters. Everyone has seen a beach, but not many beach areas have such a mesmerising lagoon alongside them. The water is just over a metre high at its deepest end and most of it is much shallower. Consequently, it heats up quick in the hot Greek sun and quickly becomes a warm temperature. Lie down and bathe, go for a walk and take some of your best holiday snaps!

Walking across Balos lagoon

Go for a swim

Turquoise waters like this are best enjoyed away from the shore! Pick a beach that catches your eye and go for a swim. The water is refreshingly cool.

Explore the area on foot

If you’re eager to explore, put on some water shoes and trek the whole area. You’ll find some excellent viewpoints, rocky areas that lead out into the ocean and plenty of different types of scenery. Venture away from the tourists for a quieter Balos experience.

Balos Lagoon and Beach from above

Relax on a sun lounger

Pull up a chair and umbrella as soon as you arrive and use it as your base for a few hours. It’s a more comfortable way of relaxing in the sun and you have shade when you need it. Alternatively, bring along a towel and simply lie on the sand.

Our Top tips for visiting Balos Lagoon:

  • If you’re renting a car and planning on driving to Balos Lagoon, note that you won’t be covered on the insurance in case something happens. Be sure to consider other options ahead of time to make sure you feel comfortable
  • If you do decide to drive there, you’ll need to park your car right at the top of the car park and will need to walk down to the lagoon, which will take around 30 minutes. Parking is free and the walk down is sharp but very scenic.
  • We highly recommend purchasing a pair of water shoes. The beach is quite rocky and can be quite sharp (like all the beaches in Crete), so a pair of these shoes is a must.
  • Sun lungers are available to rent at Balos Lagoon at a set (two sunbeds and a parasol) cost 15 euros for the day. If you’re looking to rent a lounger, be sure to arrive earlier in the morning to guarantee a bed.
  • There aren’t many places for you to buy food and drink at Balos, so make sure you bring plenty of water and snacks if you’re planning on staying for the day. If you’re travelling by ferry, you’ll be able to buy meals, drinks and snacks on the boat.

The top things to do in Gramvousa

Gramvousa is the perfect combination destination to Balos Beach and can only be accessed by boat. Whether you’re visiting via the ferry or a private tour, the scenery of Gramvousa Bay from the fortress above will blow you away. Here are some of the best things to do during your time here:

Hike up to Gramvousa Fortress

If you want to see the best views of Gramvousa, you’re going to have to take the steep uphill hike to Gramvousa Fortress, which will take you around 15 – 20 minutes depending on how fast you walk. The fortress was built on a mountain between 1579 and 1584, it’s recognised as being one of the most impressive castles on the whole island. It can’t be missed! Admire the stunning views from the top and snap away as you create some unforgettable moments with your lens.

Drone shot of Gramvousa fortress

Discover the Gramvousa Shipwreck

The landmark of the area, which is instantly noticeable as you arrive, is the rusty remains of a ship that capsized in the bay. A ship called Motorship Dimitrios P was marooned here in 1968 after encountering stormy weather and straying off course, and its remains have since corroded. Take some cool photos as you gaze at the wreck from the nearby rocks or jump into the water for a closer view.

An old shipwreck marooned on Gramvousa island

Snorkel in the bay

The enticing turquoise waters will be calling your name as soon as you arrive in Gramvousa. Jump off the small pier and enjoy swimming around discovering the local sea life. The highlight of all snorkelling at Gramvousa is seeing the shipwreck up close. Very cool!

Snorkelling in Gramvousa bay - Balos and Gramvousa travel guide

Relax on the beach

You might want to spend some time in the baking Cretan sun, and there’s plenty of opportunity to do this on the beach. You’ll certainly want some rest after hiking up to the fortress! Find a spot in the shade under the palm trees or relax on the sand. There aren’t any sun loungers here so we recommend bringing your own beach towels with you.

Relaxing on Gramvousa beach

Our top tips for visiting Gramvousa:

  • Be sure to bring appropriate footwear, especially if you’re planning on walking up to see the Venetian castle. The trail is very rocky and unstable in some areas. Switch your flip flops for trainers.
  • It can get quite busy in the summer months, especially with ferry and boat tours, so if you’re travelling alone, or even if you’re with a tour, try to get out early as possible for the best sunbathing and snorkelling spots.
  • Don’t forget to bring food with you, as there aren’t many snack options on the beach. You’ll find the occasional food and drink stall but it’s best to be prepared.

When’s the best time to visit Balos Beach?

As with a lot of tourist destinations, the summer months can get quite busy. If travelling between July and September, we recommend avoiding weekends and opting for weekdays instead. As Crete boasts warm temperatures until November time, visiting in May-June, or September-October is the perfect time to visit Balos Beach. You’ll avoid the large crowds and the long queues (not to mention you’ll have a pick of the bunch when it comes to finding a sun lounger!).

That being said, you’ll still want to arrive at a decent time, even if you do end up visiting out of the peak holiday season. If you take the boat tour, you’ll arrive at Balos around midday, and then 3pm at Gramvousa. However, if you drive, we recommend arriving around 10am before the crowds of boat tours start to flock in.

Balos Beach guide - Susie overlooking Gramvousa bay

How long shall I visit Balos Beach for?

If you’re joining an organised tour, or catching the ferry like we did, then you’ll be allocated a certain amount of time at Balos and Gramvousa. We spent 2.5 hours in Balos and then 1 hour in Gramvousa. It was plenty of time to explore the gorgeous destinations, as well as have enough time to lie in the sun.

If you’re looking to spend the full day at Balos, or Gramvousa, or even half a day at both, then this is possible through a private boat tour/hire, or by driving there yourself.

Balos Beach & Lagoon, Crete: Practical Tips for Your Trip

Famous Balos Beach is truly a gem and one of the best beaches on Crete Island . Turquoise water, white sand, and the picturesque island of Tigani make perfect scenery. Balos belongs among the most beautiful places in the whole Mediterranean. I bet you already know its photos (it will show up among the first pictures in Google for the word “Crete”). The beach itself makes a connection between the Tigani island and the mainland. Balos Beach and Lagoon are located at the northwestern corner of Crete in the Chania region .

Obsah / Table of Contents

Balos Beach and Lagoon

The best view of Balos Beach and Lagoon is from the upper viewpoint . You come across this viewpoint if you walk from the parking lot. In case you arrive by boat, we highly recommend doing a 15-20-minute hike up there. It is definitely worth it! You can see the whole Balos Lagoon from above as well as the beach connection of Tigani Island and Crete island. The water in the lagoon is amazingly turquoise and warm. The lagoon has approximately 450 – 500 meters in diameter and it is not deep at all which is perfect for families with children.

A better place for swimming is on the other side of the beach towards the north and Gramvousa island. Water outside of the lagoon is a little cooler and deeper. You might also find some pink sand spots on Balos. Sand has a pink color because of thousands of crushed shells. To see pink sand in much bigger concentration, visit another magnificent beach of Elafonisi, which is famous for its awesome pink sand.

Facilities at Balos Beach

You will find a beach bar, shower, toilets, and changing rooms during the season at Balos Beach. You can also hire sunbeds and beach umbrellas . Visitors arriving by boat have the opportunity to buy drinks or snacks on the boat as well. Remember – Greece use Euro as a currency .

Best time to visit Balos Beach

If you want to avoid tourist crowds, come early in the morning to enjoy at least a few quiet hours on the paradise beach of Balos. If you visit the place off-season or early/ very late in the season, you might be the only people in the area. There was hardly anyone during the 4th week of October.

On the other hand, if you enjoy the Greek Spirit and parties, come in season as Crete is one of the best Greek Islands to party .

Getting to Balos Beach

Balos by car.

Getting to Balos by car is quite adventurous, but it is an essential part of the Crete road trip . The last 8 km on the peninsula is just a dirt road with lots of rocks. Count at least 30 minutes for driving this section. There is a toll of €1 per person collected at the beginning of the road – be prepared for that and have cash with you! Also, keep in mind that the insurance of most of the rental companies doesn’t cover driving on a dirt road like this.

There is a free parking lot available at the end of the road. If it is full, park your car along the road. From here it is still about 1.5 km by walk. The path is stony and it will take you about 20-30 minutes to get to the beach. It is best to take some better shoes than flip flips, e.g. sandals because of this section. Wonderful views await you on the way. So don’t forget your camera or phone.

You can use the donkey taxi on the way back, towards the parking place.

Plan your trip

First, you will need a car. Compare prices of car rentals nearby and choose the best once for you.

Getting to Balos by car take can take a while, especially from further destinations. However, renting a car in Crete is a good way to get around. We have prepared a table of distances and times between individual cities and parking lot at Balos:

Rent a sunbed and umbrella if you want. Balos Lagoon. Crete, Greece

The meeting point is at Kissamos Harbor . There is also a free parking area available in case you arrive by car. As soon as you board, you will have an hour-long cruise towards Gramvousa Island (see below), where you spend approximately 2 hours. After that, it’s only 20 minutes cruise to Balos Beach and Lagoon . Free time on Balos is a little bit longer – 3 hours. Bar and toilets on the boat are available all the time. The whole trip in total takes about 7 hours.

Gramvousa Island

If you go to Balos by boat, you will also have the opportunity to explore nearby Gramvousa Island. Already on arrival, you can see the shipwreck of a 35-meter-long cargo boat. The boat carrying cement got stranded here in 1968 due to bad weather.

The island of Gramvousa is exceptional for its flora. There are 173 different plant species, including critically endangered Anthemis Glaberrima that grows only in the Greek islands.

The dominant landmark of the former pirate island of Gramvousa is the Venetian fortress from the 16th century. It was built 137 meters above sea level and you want to hike up. We definitely recommend better shoes than flip-flops. For those who aren’t interested in fortress exploration, there is a beautiful Gramvousa Beach. The water is shallow and clear, just be careful of rocks.

Balos Beach and Lagoon: The Ultimate Guide to Visiting Crete’s Most Famous Attractions

Balos-Greece-Crete-September-2021-03931

Balos Beach and Lagoon are some of the most popular places on the Greek island of Crete. The beach is considered one of the best in the world and has been featured in many lists as one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece, such as CN Traveler’s one. If you are planning a trip to Crete soon, let me give you all the details you need to visit Balos.

Why Visit Balos Beach and Lagoon, on Crete Island

Starring the list of most beautiful places in Greece, Balos allures many travelers to Crete that are yearning for its calm turquoise waters and picture-perfect landscape.

Though not the easiest place to reach on the island, the view of the beach and lagoon from the viewpoint has easily become one of the postcards of the island and should be part of any itinerary to Crete. On one side you’ll see the mirrored still waters of the lagoon reflecting the mountain and on the other side the pristine sea with many shades of blue welcoming visitors for a refreshing dip.

Where is Balos

Balos is located on the west side of Crete and it’s possible to reach it from the main cities of the island – Chania, Heraklion, and Rethymno.

Here are the approximate distances:

  • Chania: 32 miles
  • Rethymno: 70 miles
  • Heraklion: 118 miles

balos beach tour crete

Visiting Balos Beach from Heraklion or Rethymno would take from 2 to 4 hours. Since it would be a big and tiring drive and you would miss most of the day commuting, I wouldn’t recommend staying in any of them to visit Balos.

Because of this, the best city to stay in and visit Balos is Chania, where you can reach the beach in just about 1h30.

If you’re flying into Crete, the closest airport to Balos is the Chania one that receives international flights from other cities in Europe, such as London and Frankfurt, and the capital of Greece – Athens.

Additionally, Crete is also connected to Athens and other Cyclades islands (Santorini and Mykonos) by ferry with arrivals in either Heraklion or Chania.

Where to stay to visit Balos, Crete

With the distances mentioned above, the best hotels to stay at to visit Balos are in the towns nearby the beach itself, like Kissamos and Falassarna, or in Chania, where you’ll have access to restaurants, bars, and many other attractions.

It’s also important to have in mind that even staying in either Kissamos or Falassarna, there will still be around 30 minutes by car to Balos.

Balos Lagoon

HOTELS NEAR BALOS BEACH AND LAGOON

  • Balos Hotel – Balos is located 5 miles away from this hotel which is the perfect option if you don’t want to wake up super early to go to the beach. From here you’ll also be close to Falassarna and Elafonisi, two must-see beaches on Crete Island.
  • Maria Beach Hotel – Situated 9 miles from Balos Beach, right on the beach, by staying in this hotel you can also visit the nearby beaches and the center of Kissamos.
  • Casa D’Irene Deluxe Hotel – a gorgeous hotel in Falassarna, very close to the beach that could also be a good alternative to visit the beaches on the west side of Crete.

BEST HOTELS IN CHANIA

  • Domes Zeen Chania – for a seaside luxury experience, this is one of the best options. It has a picture-perfect pool, outdoor gym, beach service with chairs and umbrellas, it’s good for families, and is part of the Luxury Collection of hotels. Its sophisticated and comfortable rooms have Byredo amenities, and many have a private plunge pool.
  • Domes Noruz Chania – another seaside hotel with modern bright rooms featuring private pools. It’s the best option for couples since it’s adults-only and is also part of the Autograph Collection.
  • Porto Antico – a historic hotel built in 1659 and is located in the colorful Venetian Harbor of Chania. In this hotel, your rooms can come with views of the Old Town, the port, and the Pharos lighthouse.
  • Belmondo Hotel – also in the Venetian Harbor right where many restaurants and taverns are located and with stunning views of Chania’s Old Town.
  • Casa Delfino Hotel & Spa – placed in the heart of Chania’s picturesque old town, this authentic 17th-century Venetian mansion has a rooftop terrace overlooking the town and the Venetian Harbor.

Getting to Balos from Chania

There are two ways to get to Balos Beach and Lagoon from Chania. The first one is by boat, in either group tours or private tours, and the second one is by driving and hiking.

Boat tours to Balos usually stay around 2-3 hours at the beach, and also include a stop on the island of Imeri Gramvousa . Though you’ll be able to swim at the beach and lagoon, you won’t be able to have the epic views from above unless you hike for around 40 minutes up and down against the flow of tourists. Another inconvenience of the boat tou r to Balos is that it arrives at the beach around noon, when many other visitors who drove earlier in the day are already settled, and the place can be very crowded. If you’d like to know more about boat tours to Balos, check out the excursions offered at GetYourGuide or tours offered by Uncharted Escapes and Strata Tours .

Now if you prefer to drive yourself as I did, then you should plan on having an early start to your day. I’d recommend arriving in Balos before 10 am (preferably before 9 am), so consider the time since the drive from Chania to Balos takes around 1h30.

From Chania, you’ll have to drive towards Kissamos. Once you pass through Kissamos and the port of Kavonisi, you’ll reach the village of Kaliviani. After driving through the narrow roads of this small village, you’ll arrive at the dirt road that is the official entrance to the road to Balos. Here you’ll find an entrance post where visitors must pay a €1 fee per person to access the peninsula (cash only).

Balos Lagoon reflection

After the entrance post, you’ll start your journey along the dirt road which, despite many comments on the internet, isn’t as bad as it seems. If you go early in the day, you may only encounter a few other drivers and you might have to stop to let a few goats cross the street, but the road is wide enough to safely pass. This part of the drive should take around 30 to 40 minutes.

Balos Beach and Lagoon last part of the hike

Once you arrive at the parking lot, you’ll need to hike down to Balos (it takes roughly 30 minutes). The hike is easy, despite the irregular rocky path. After a few minutes, you’ll get to the viewpoint where you’ll have the most impressive panorama of the lagoon and the beach. Take some time to soak in the magnificent views before continuing towards the beach, where the last part of the hike you’ll have to walk over the white powdery sand. Then, you just need to relax and enjoy your time swimming in the ocean or cooling down in the lagoon.

Just have in mind that, later, you’ll have to hike in the opposite direction on your way to the car, which can be more challenging and exhausting.

Family in the waters of Balos beach

Facilities on Balos Beach and Lagoon

On Balos you’ll find beach chairs and umbrella rental service for around €15, depending on the season.

There’s one canteen selling beverages, but I would strongly recommend bringing snacks and plenty of water for the hike.

Also, there’s a bathroom facility where you have to pay a small fee to use.

Chairs and Umbrellas in Balos Beach

Best time to visit Balos Beach and Lagoon

Like many Greek beaches, the best time to visit Balos Beach is from May to early November. Please have in mind that July and August are very busy and hot months on Crete.

I visited Balos on a weekday in mid-September and had the best time without crowds and had perfect weather – I arrived around 8 am and left around 1 pm to see the nearby Falassarna Beach.

Swimmers in Balos Beach

Best tips for visiting Balos Beach and Lagoon

Be sure to pack enough water and a picnic with snacks and fruits.

Though the hike is ok, you may want to dress comfortably and bring comfortable shoes – either hiking sandals or sneakers (keep your flip flops on your backpack for the beach).

If going to Balos Beach and Lagoon seems too much for you, try the one-of-a-kind Elafonisi Beach that has easier access, or Falassarna Beach which has a big stretch of sand that can please everybody and is ideal for water sports.

Falassarna Beach is also one of the best beaches on Crete and is located approximately 12 miles from Balos. The beach is so vast that you can choose between lots of places to rent umbrellas and chairs. Also, there are a lot of water activities to do here such as windsurfing, paragliding, and other water sports. If you want to do as I did, spend your morning in Balos and your afternoon in Falassarna, where you can have lunch in a cute tavern overlooking the sea in Falassarna Town (I recommend Taverna Spilios ).

The Enigmatic Name: What does ‘Gramvousa’ mean?

The name ‘Gramvousa’ captivates with its enigmatic sound. Some theories suggest that it comes from the ancient Greek words that could imply ‘rugged mountains,’ a fitting description of the landscape that confronts you.

The Layers of Gramvousa’s History

The island’s illustrious past can be mapped back to ancient times. Gramvousa played an instrumental role during the Venetian occupation, evident from the imposing fortress that stands tall, narrating tales of yesteryears. It witnessed the transition from Venetian to Ottoman rule and became a refuge for revolutionaries during the Greek War of Independence.

Gramvousa’s past is a rich tapestry woven from threads of various historical periods. From the Venetian fortress, built in the 16th century which has witnessed pirate invasions and Ottoman rule, to serving as a stronghold during the Greek War of Independence; each layer of stone in the fortress seems to tell its own story.

Legends and Myths :

Folktales suggest that pirates hid their treasures in Gramvousa Island. While these are not historically documented, they add an element of mystique to the island.

What To Do on Gramvousa Island?

  • Archaeological Wonders : Discover remnants of ancient civilizations as you explore the island.
  • Bird-Watching : The island is a temporary home to migratory birds like the Eleonora’s falcon.

  • By Boat: For those not inclined to hike, boat services operate from Kissamos port. The boat ride from Kissamos to Balos is a journey of roughly an hour. The journey on the waves, with the cool sea breeze and the sight of the impending paradise, is an experience in itself.

Conservation: A Shared Responsibility

Gramvousa Island, Balos Lagoon Beach, Crete tours, VisitCrete excursions, Greek Island adventure

  • Footwear: The terrain can be challenging; sturdy footwear is a must.
  • Hydration: Carry enough water, especially if you’re planning to hike.
  • Camera : For capturing memories.

Balos map

That said, most people take the ferry from Kissamos to Balos. The beautiful trip offers the chance to spot dolphins. The ferry stops at the island of Imeri Gramvousa, where you can visit the old fortress as you make your way towards the beach.

Balos is featured on our top 10 beaches in Crete .

Balos Crete

An overview of the beach Those who drive to Balos will be met with a breath-taking view as they roll into the carpark. The carpark is located 1 km from the beach, but the entire walk down is absolutely stunning, and it’s easily one of the most photographed areas in all of Crete.

The beach can be found in the area between Gramvousa and Tigani. The large area is covered with the finest sand that sometimes shimmers pink because it’s mixed in with crushed corals and seashells. Between the sandbanks is a large area with shallow water, best described as a lagoon. The water has a beautiful, turquoise hue.

Sun loungers and parasols are available to rent, and the lagoon is equipped with showers and toilets. There are no lifeguards, but bathing in the lagoon is fairly safe. There are no waves and no undercurrents.

Balos beach Crete

In July and August, people tend to be packed like sardines in Balos. Those who arrive by car should arrive early, so they don’t miss out on the sun loungers and the last hours of relative calm before the ferries start running regularly.

Child-friendliness The shallow, calm water in the lagoon is perfect for families with children. It doesn’t get better than this. Those who arrive by car should keep in mind that the lagoon is a fair walk from the carpark.

Water sports There are no water sports in Balos, but those who like to stay active can enjoy a walk along the beach, taking in their unique surroundings.

Beachside restaurants Although the area is protected under Natura 2000 , a few beach bars have popped up along the lagoon, where guests can buy drinks, snacks, and ice cream.

Holiday destinations in the vicinity The nearest town is Kissamos, which is a “real” town with lots of local residents and normal shops. On the outskirts of town, you’ll find a selection of wonderful beachside hotels, such as Molos Bay, which regularly receives positive reviews from guests.

A little further out is the Chania coast, where you’ll find one holiday destination after the other. The town closest to Balos is  Kolymvari .

How to get to Balos Beach Crete

  • David Angel

At some point during your holidays in Crete, you’re probably going to want to know how to get to Balos beach Crete and lagoon. It is one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece and one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

You’ll see the pictures of it outside every travel agency between there and the capital of Crete, Heraklion. We’ve written all about  Balos Beach  in our post elsewhere on the site, and indeed nearby  Gramvousa Beach . This article is all about the Kissamos to Balos ferry, the way most visitors reach Balos Beach.

How to Get to Balos Beach Crete

The Balos beach ferry is one of the most popular boat trips in Crete. Balos travel can be time-consuming, particularly as you have to reach the departure point for the boat to Balos beach, Kissamos port, which is in the far west of Crete island.

You may well decide to book a Balos tour, or make tracks there yourself. Whatever you choose, you will end up in the same boat – literally.

You’ve seen the pictures of stunning Balos Bay, which also happens to be one of a small number of pink beaches in Crete . Now for the somewhat more prosaic business of getting there.

How to get to Balos  beach quick summary

Balos Beach Greece Image of Balos beach and lagoon, Crete

The Balos Beach boat runs daily from early May to late October – weather permitting

It runs from Kissamos Port, 2 km outside the town of Kissamos (which is also known to many Cretans as Kastelli)  – which is 38 km (24 miles) from the city of Chania

The service is operated by  Cretan Daily Cruises

Image of passengers enjoying the view from the Balos cruise

The ferry  Gramvousa  has a capacity of 1200 passengers – in July and August high season it is full almost every day

It is considerably quieter during the shoulder season – there were around 300 people when we travelled in mid-October

The Balos ferry usually departs between 1000 and 1100, arriving back in Kissamos around 1800

Image of passengers on board the ferry to Balos beach in Crete

The ferry to Balos beach costs 27 euros per adult and 13 euros per child

The journey takes around 50 minutes to Imeri Gramvousa Island – you have some time (90 minutes to 2 hours) there before returning to the boat

Once everyone is back on board, the journey to Balos takes a further 15 minutes

What is the Balos Beach boat Like ?

Balos Greece Image of the ferry to Balos moored at Gramvousa Island

It’s a large ferry boat, comparable to many that you would use to go Greek island hopping.

The boat has all the facilities you need – you can stock up on water, drinks or food on board, or have sandwiches and meals at the cafeteria on the main deck.

Image of the cafeteria on board the ferry to Balos beach Crete

There is seating inside and outside, with plenty of cover out on deck should you need it.

You can also rent beach gear including beach umbrellas. This is a good idea if you’re travelling in the summer peak season.

What is the journey to Balos Beach Crete like ?

Image of the Crete coast seen from the Kissamos to Balos Beach ferry

The journey is very scenic, as you have the coast of the rugged Rodopou peninsula on one side (starboard, or right) and the mountainous Balos peninsula on your left (port side).

What is Gramvvousa Beach like ?

Image of Gramvousa beach Crete Greece

In a word, breathtaking. The turquoise water is some of the most beautiful we’ve seen anywhere in the world – and that includes extensive recent travel in Western Australia and along the Andaman Sea.

Image of Gramvousa Castle and beach Crete Greece

The island also has a Venetian fortress high above on a clifftop overlooking the beach. If you want to see both Gramvousa Castle and the beach, you won’t have much time at either. We suggest heading straight up to the Castle, coming back down and relaxing on the beach for the rest of the time.

How far from the Balos beach does the boat anchor ?

It moors about a five-minute walk from the beach at Balos.

How to get to Balos Beach from Chania ?

Image of Balos Lagoon Crete Greece

There are two options – booking a  Balos Beach tour from Chania or making your own way to the port at Kissamos. You will then be on the Kissamos ferry to Balos.

There are no regular direct Chania boat trips to Balos. You can charter a boat with a crew of two for between 500 and 1200 euros, depending on the number of passengers.

Likewise, there are no boats from  Rethymno  – it’s the same process, just a longer journey to and from Kissamos.

Are there any other Balos cruises ?

Yes, but options are very limited. You can go on a Balos cruise from the small harbour at  Falassarna , but this service had ceased by early October when we visited.

Is there a bus to Balos Beach ?

Can  you get to balos beach by car .

Image of Balos bay from the path down from the car park

Yes, you can, it’s a dirt road that really should really only be accessed by off-road vehicles such as four wheel drives (4WD).   A dirt road runs along the east side of the Balos peninsula, finishing high up at the Balos Beach parking area. It’s a fairly steep downhill walk from there to beach level.

Remember that you’ll have to make the return trip uphill later – even in mid-October it can still be very hot. I saw a few people who weren’t up to the return hike, who had resorted to the so-called ‘donkey taxi’ up the hill. The sign said ‘donkey’, but the poor creatures burdened with this task were horses.  Suffice to say I was not impressed.

What about the road to Balos Beach ?

Image of the dirt road t Balos beach from the sea Crete Greece

It’s a dirt road that should really only be accessed by off-road vehicles such as four-wheel drives (4WD).

Some who drove it in October said that the surface was quite good, and that they had made the journey by 2-wheel drive hire car. They put this down to a long period of dry weather beforehand.

I’ve read other accounts saying that the road can get badly rutted, indeed corrugated in places.

We didn’t try to drive it, preferring to take the Balos boat trip instead.
