best bike trip places in kerala

Kerala is full of spectacular locations perfect for a long ride through nature. (Creative Commons)

It is well known that God’s Own Country, Kerala, is a favoured holiday destination for many from abroad and within India, especially for those from the neighbouring southern states.

People fly in to do the usual: A trip to Munnar-Thekkady to experience the tea- and spices-laden hills, the quaint Fort Kochi area and its Jew town and synagogue, the many pristine beaches, and the backwaters of Kumarakom and Alappuzha.

Given the spectacular, winding mountain roads, the quiet, almost sleepy roads meandering through the rural areas, as well as roads practically hugging the sea, we at South First wondered why no one ever opts to go biking in Kerala.

We have put together four great bike rides you can embark on from Kochi. None of them is more than six hours one way, and we believe this is the best way to explore the countryside and take in the many shades of green the state has on offer.

There are many places in Kochi that rent out bikes of all makes and models — by the hour, day, or even week. At very reasonable rates. A quick search on the net will give you several options.

So here are the four bike rides you can embark on from Kochi that will give you a flavour of Kerala.

1. Kochi to Munnar

This route promises you the best of both worlds. From the busy, colourful streets of Kochi to nature’s glories in Munnar, your ride will be full of exciting landscapes.

Munnar Bike Trip Kerala

A ride from Kochi to Munnar is all about the best of city life as well as nature. (Creative Commons)

“You can start by riding through the famous Fort Kochi, Jew Street, Marine Drive, and Kadamakkudy — and then begins the real ride into the lap of nature. The best route for this ride, in my opinion, is via NH85 as it has less traffic and hardly any road closures,” 32-year-old businessman Avinash Shankar from Kochi, who loves quick getaway trips on his prized Royal Enfield Meteor 350, tells South First.

“Once you get onto the NH85, you will leave the city behind and continue on a local two-way one and make your way through little villages surrounded by eye-popping green paddy fields. Even though I left pretty early in the morning, I still found several trucks and lorries crowding the roads as that is the main route to the Central Ghats and Tamil Nadu beyond that,” Shankar adds.

Your ride will start getting steeper approximately three hours from Kochi as the landscape starts turning hilly and in case it gets overwhelming, not to worry, the route has lots of little towns you can stop and take a breather.

About five hours into your ride from Kochi, you will enter Munnar and you can simply ride around the little hill station, soaking in all the tea plantations rising on both sides of the road and tumbling down the mountains beyond.

Distance: Approximately 130 km

Duration of ride: Approximately 4 to 5 hours.

2. And from Munnar to Thekkady

This route is a scenic one from the start right till the end. From the tea plantations of Munnar to the wildlife awesomeness of Thekkady, bikers are in for a picturesque treat.

Thekkady Bike Trip Kerala

Wildlife lovers are in for a treat on a ride to Thekkady. (Creative Commons)

This route is perfect for those who don’t mind detours and are cool with exploring the places on the way, as it is full of little villages, waterfalls, off-road tracks, and some stretches even have hairpin bends if you are confident enough about your biking skills.

You will also come across a beautiful valley leading to an impressive vertical cliff, and as you continue towards Thekkady, the scene changes from plantations to forests.

“While riding to Thekkady you will use NH185 and SH19. There are mainly two routes to reach your destination but the one I suggest is one which takes you through Chithirapuram, Anachal, Rajakkad, Karitode, Nedumkandam and finally, Thekaddy. The entire ride will take about three hours, depending on the weather conditions and traffic. You also better watch out for the narrow roads on the route, which can become a major nuisance during the monsoon season. Just keep riding slowly and fight your instinct to go full throttle!” Shankar tells South First.

Enroute Thekkady you will come across magnificent sights such as the Kolukkumalai Tea Estate, the Karadippara Viewpoint which will show you some of the most gorgeous sunsets, and the Sree Narayanapuram waterfalls, which is a lesser-known pitstop to many riders.

Distance: 91 km.

Duration of ride: Approximately 3 hours.

3. Kochi to Kappil Beach

When one thinks of beaches in Kerala, the name that pops up — after the internationally known Kovalam — is that of the beautiful Varkala beach, known for its fascinating stretch of golden sand, mostly sought by those who crave a holiday filled with solitude.

But what if I told you that just a bike ride ahead of Varkala was another charming little beach that not many people know about?

Kappil Beach is around 7-8 km away from the main town of Varkala, and the road to get there is perfect for bikers who see themselves as daredevils.

If you are heading from Kochi towards Kappil Beach, then get on NH66 and it’s a straight hour-and-a-half ride to Alappuzha. Or you can take a more scenic route, which is the spectacular coastline road through Chellanam-Andarakanazhy-Marari, which is mostly peppered with beaches, backwaters, and little villages, which make for amazing views as you ride.

From Alappuzha, Varkala is about 105 km and it’s pretty much a straight smooth road to Kollam. Once you reach Kollam beach, you can either continue on the highway or ride alongside the Arabian Sea, which will be a heavenly ride for any biker, with tall coconut trees bordering the narrow road on both sides, and the backwaters in the backdrop.

Kappil Beach Kerala

Locals prefer the solitude of Kappil Beach compared to the ‘touristy’ Vagamon. (Creative Commons)

And once you reach Varkala, Kappil Beach is just a short ride away.

“The road above the natural blending cliffs with the Arabian Sea in Varkala is not really suitable for bike rides as it is too narrow and way too crowded. However, sometimes, I go off-road through a non-tarred road on my way to Kappil beach and am treated to a magical view of the sea,” 22-year-old PR executive Vishal Matthias from Kochi tells South First.

“Riding on the beach road is a particularly awesome experience, with the beautiful Edava Narayana Lake on one side and the blue Arabian Sea on the other. Do not miss it at any cost!” Matthias adds.

Distance: Approximately 160 km

Duration of ride: Approximately 5-6 hours.

4. Kochi To Vagamon

The route from Kochi to Vagamon takes you through the Western Ghats and is picturesque in every way imaginable.

Vagamon Bike Trip Kerala

The Kottayam to Vagamon route will test bikers. (Creative Commons)

Vagamon is a perfect weekend destination from Kochi and if you have a bike, take NH85 and make your way through Muvattupuzha and on to Thodupuzha and drive on to Moolamattom and the Kanjar-Pullikanam road or the Koovappally road in Kanjar. Continue on the route and then ride to the Pullikkanam-Elappara road in Vagamon.

Watch out for the hairpin bends on the route, as even though they can be exhilarating, the steep turns are actually quite dangerous if you are not a skilled rider.

If you really want to enjoy a misty route, it’s best you set off early in the morning.

Of course, once you reach Vagamon, get ready for a whole world of off-road detours which will take you to lesser-known destinations you won’t really find online. What more could a true biker ask for?

Distance: Approximately 102 km.

Duration of ride : About 3-4 hours.

Of course, people, especially youngsters choose bike riding as the best option for enjoying the beauty of nature. Know the list of top destinations in kerala for bike riders, where you can go on a bike ride.

Kerala is situated on the tropical Malabar Coast of south-western India. It's impossible not to fall in love with this gorgeous Indian state. Kerala is blessed with a rich history that spans centuries and a host of different cultures. Just as impressive, it boasts a coastline characterized by long stretches of white-sand beaches rimmed by coconut plantations. Now wonder how would it be, going on a bike ride in Kerala? No imagination can meet up the real beauty of bike trips along such marvels of nature. Now here's a few suggestions to roll on two-wheels, taking you to the best places for bike rides in Kerala.

Best Destinations to go on a Bike Ride in Kerala

Wayanad – spice garden of south.

Starting with my personal favourite, Wayanad lies in between the mountains of the Western Ghats. Popularly known as the 'spice garden of South', this green paradise is a heaven to eyes. The weather here is always smoothing, making it a perfect getaway spot. Set up between the mountains, Wayanad is a trekker's delight. This place covers a variety of interests and attractions, from waterfalls to mountain biking. All this together sums for one of the perfect Kerala bike trips. Let's dig deeper and explore some attractions in and near Wayanad.

Wayanad

Chembra Peak

Chembra Peak in Wayanad lures the nature lovers, offering a breathtaking view and a heart-shaped lake to spend time with your loved ones. It's just a 35 kms ride from the green paradise. It offers exciting trekking activities attracting adventure enthusiasts. It takes almost 3 hours to reach the top point and enjoy the view the trail has got to offer. Climbing this peak would test your physical prowess. It's an altogether refreshing experience heading to this peak.

Chembra Peak in Wayanad

Meenmutty waterfalls

Meenmutty waterfalls offers a spectacular view to its three-stage falls dropping from about 300 metres. It can be reached via a 2 km trekking route which falls on the main road connecting Ooty and Wayanad. Not to miss, it is the largest waterfall in the Wayanad district.

Priyadarshini Tea Environs

Priyadarshini Tea Environs located at Pancharakolly is set at an altitude of 3000 ft. and is one such place in Kerala where you can enjoy mountain biking through the thick and thin roads. Lastly, don't miss out on exploring the villages of Wayanad. The experience ranges from enjoying native cuisines to the making of local tribal drumming instruments and handicrafts.

Priyadarshini Tea Evirons

Athirapally Waterfalls – Niagara of India

Situated in Athirapally of Thrissur district, Athirapally Waterfalls is the largest falls in Kerala. Also known as 'Niagara of India', it finds its origin in the upper reaches of Western Ghats. The lush green forests surrounding the falls are now home grounds to myriads of endangered and endemic species of flora and fauna. Asiatic Elephant, Tiger, Leopard, Bison, Lion-tailed Macaque, are few of the varieties of species that coexist in this picturesque forest.

Athirapally Waterfalls

Owing to the scenic beauty, Athirapally is one of the favourite locations of filmmakers. For tourists there's a view stand made especially to enjoy the waterfall view. For those who're energetic, adventure enthusiasts I personally recommend trekking all the way down to relish the mist of waterfalls. It's an impeccable place to visit in Kerala on a bike while reliving nature's beauty.

Vagamon – Scotland of Asia

Vagamon is a hill station in central Travancore, Katya district. Termed as 'Scotland of Asia', Vagamon at 1200 metres above sea level is a perfect summer holiday destination as the temperature is always cool and pleasant. The cool climate and luscious scenery complement each other perfectly. The pine forest, 4 kms away from Vagamon is the abode of photographers. The pine trees growing over the slopes of hills in large acres of land is a sight unlike any other. As a fact, the pulp of pine trees are used in making currency notes.

Vagamon

Vagamon thus is one of the lesser-known gems among the outsiders. Riding to this place is relishing and refreshing. I suggest visiting this place during the late September as that Is when the cool winters starts kicking in, making it the best bike ride spot in Kerala.

Valparai – Paradise of riders

Valparai, known as 'paradise of riders' in the biking community, is popular for the beautiful roads and scenic beauty it offers. If you want to ride through a road flanked by thick vegetation on either side, the Athirapally-Valparai route is just right on the spot. Nicely tarred roads, lush greenery, the anticipation of meeting wildlife at any turn, enchanting tea estates, rare tree species like Spathodea, etc., all makes riding to Valparai a biker's paradise in real life.

Valparai Ghat

November-December sets as ideal months for travelers as these months provide an ideal, smoothing climate to ride through. That's not all, Valparai is home to various attractions to head to for amazing eye-treats. Here are two places nearby which I would personally recommend to experience.

Tea Estate Garden

Tea Estate Garden in Valparai, not only makes a wonderful tourist attraction list but is also an important aspect of the area's economy. There are many Tea Estate Bungalows around to help you with accommodation. The whole experience is unique as living with the locals, interacting with them and learning about the whole process of making tea, our morning mandatory, makes this place as one of the best places to go on a bike trip in Kerala.

tea estate garden in Valparai

Monkey falls

Monkey falls is something you should not miss on as it's one of the most exciting Valparai attractions. It's a natural waterfall located approximately 30 kms from Pollachi and at a mere 6 kms distance from the Azhiyar Dam. What makes this place exciting enough is the picturesque view that it has got to offer and the cool and calm weather all-round the year.

Monkey falls

Munnar – Kashmir of South India

Munnar, Kerala's own Kashmir is a hill station at 5200 ft. above sea level. The mountains of Munnar extend itself to the Western Ghats. The name Munnar translates to three rivers referring to its location at the confluence of the Mudhirapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundaly rivers.

Munnar, Kerala

Most of the native flora and fauna has significantly disappeared due to the creation of plantations and deforestation. Several endemic and threatened species like the Nilgiri Tahr, the grizzled giant Squirrel, the Nilgiri wood Pigeon, Elephant, the Nilgiri Languor and the Neelakurinji, which flowers once in 12 years, are protected in the wildlife sanctuaries and national parks. Is that all in Munnar? A big No! Let me take you on a ride to a few of the stunning attractions/places in Munnar itself.

Mattupetty Dam

Mattupetty Dam is one of the major tourist attractions in Munnar. This water reservoir in Idukki district is located at a distance of 13 kms from the Kashmir of South India. Tucked away amidst towering hills and mountains, this dam serves as a main source of hydroelectricity in the region. An exotic range of flora and fauna thrives around it. If luck favours, you can easily spot Asiatic Elephants visiting the dam-site in search of food and water. Mattupetty Dam serves as a delightful place for birdwatching too.

Mattupetty Dam Reservoir

The echo point comes under one of the stunning places to visit in Munnar or even in Kerala as whole. Located around 15 kms away from the hill station, it is also known as one of the most mystical places in Munnar. Apart from the alluring beauty of the place,a natural phenomenon of echo formation is yet another hallmark of this spot. This place will surely hold you captive with its charm and the view it has got to offer. Note, do not forget to shout out and hear it back.

Echo Point Munnar

Meesapulimala

Meesapulimala, a splendid gift of the mighty Western Ghats, boasts of being the second highest peak in Southern India. Standing tall at 8661 ft. above sea level, this peak is right in between the Anamalai Hills and is 20 kms away from Munnar. A not-to-miss tourist place to visit in Kerala, It is a fact that the peak looks like a moustache and is often packed by trekkers and adventure seekers. It offers an 8 kms trekking trail which starts from the beautiful Rhodovalley, offering the trekkers to pass through its remarkable patches.

Meesapulimala

There's a lot more to Munnar but writing everything down here would make this blog never ending. Out of all my travel experiences, a bike ride in Munnar has been the best till date.

Varkala - The Pearl of the Arabian Sea

Varkala, a calm and peaceful homestead, lies on the outskirts of Trivandrum district. A beautiful beach, a 2000 year old Vishnu Temple and the Ashramam-Sivagiri Mutt are a few tourist attractions at a little distance from the Varkala beach. Janardhanaswamy Temple, one of the pilgrim spots in varkala a 2000 years ancient shrine stands on top of a tableland looking at the beach situated a short distance away.

The Varkala beach is popularly also known as Papanasam Beach, resting 10 kms away from Varkala, is famed for a natural spring, regarded as medicinal and curative properties. A dip in the holy waters at this beach is believed to purge the body of impurities and the soul of all sins. Now you understand why the name 'Papanasam'?

Varkala_Beach_3

Varkala offers many accommodation options for tourists and is growing to be a popular health resort with many Ayurvedic practices in and around. Do carry your "beach essentials" to enjoy the evening while chilling on a shack.

Here's a complete gist of my experience riding and exploring in Kerala. But there's one thing I cannot miss out on. All this wouldn't have been possible without the seamless bike renting option from Royal Brothers . My friend from Bengaluru introduced me to this beautiful organization which stands for its words of making mobility accessible to all. I rented a Royal Enfield Himalayan from Calicut and I was able to have my dream bike trip In Kerala. I really recommend renting from RB if you don't have a bike but love riding.

It helps you to meet and interact with people who share a common interest. There are plenty of bicycle clubs outside India, and the concept is also getting popular here as well. Cycling clubs arrange cycling trips to various locations which you can be a part of.

As you attend more and more cycling trips, you become aware of the benefits and challenges of these kinds of trips. Trips like this help you develop good bonding with your fellow travellers and excitingly discover unexplored paths. If you want to take a different path and make new friends on the way, then joining a cycling club can work on your favour. As you come across different people sharing their love to travel in bikes, you'll end up getting the much-needed encouragement to seek out for an adventure soon.

If you aren’t comfortable around strangers, you can plan a family or friends cycling tour. Try to look out for packaged tours in Kerala that offers biking tours besides regular tour packages as well.

A cycle trip to Kerala is a unique way to explore the state like never before. When you are with the right group and the right set of people, you can have unlimited fun, explore the beautiful places to see and create unforgettable memories. Whether you are celebrating your birthday, honeymoon, or just looking for a good time with your dear ones in Kerala, a bike trip can be your best choice.

Day 1 : Fort Kochi

Meet your trip leader at the hotel around 14:00hrs and head out to see Fort Kochi by bike and foot.

One of the foremost trading hubs on the western coast of India, Fort Kochi drew colonial interest with its aromatic spices. Along with traders from China, Portugal, Arabs, and Holland came a cocktail of religions, cultural practices, and diverse food. Kerala owes its cosmopolitan vibe to the traders who braved the seas to come to this land.

Fort Kochi is dotted with remnants of the past, which you can discover by bike and foot. Step out to see the Vasco Church, Basilica, Dutch Cemetery, Jew Town and the Paradesi Synagogue, and the famous Chinese fishing nets, which lie within a 2km radius.

In the evening, we convene over dinner tonight at a seaside restaurant known for seafood and Indian delicacies.

Itinerary Image

Day 2 : Thattekad

Our guide meets you at your hotel at 07:30hrs. This morning we start with a 2.5 hours shuttle bus to get out of traffic-clogged roads. We start cycling along the canal route to Thattekad. This first tryst with Kerala on the wheels will enthrall you. A scenic route, this smooth road along a canal is perfect to see birdlife and the verdant environs of real Kerala. Our destination is the outdoor camping facility- The Hornbill Camp.

We check into our snug and comfortable Swiss tents and get ready for an activity-packed day. Hornbill Camp offers Kayaking in the Periyar River, bird watching, and plantation walk around the property. The stay gives you a taste of the wilderness of Kerala along with all the comforts. The camp is situated in the environs of a tropical forest where you have nothing but birdsong for company!

Itinerary Image

Day 3 : Munnar

Today we ride into the countryside and follow the Periyar River. A scenic route, along a river, is perfect to see birdlife and the verdant environs of real Kerala. The gradual rising trail winds its way through rubber and pineapple plantations to the Idukki forest reserve. We continue our gradual climb towards our lunch stop at a local restaurant. After lunch, bike amongst enormous grass plants, and eucalyptus trees, and past alpine tea plantations in the rugged Munnar hills to your hotel.

Thattekadu-Munnar.PNG

Day 4 : Munnar

Munnar is a pleasant contrast to the beach-lined destinations or backwaters of Kerala. A hill station, which has been immortalized by movies, Munnar is great to cycle in. The routes are undulating and sometimes challenging, but you will find an equal amount of downhill slopes to bring relief to steep climbs.

We head out to Top Station, a viewpoint of great touristic eminence. The riding stretch to Top station is one of our favorite cycling routes in Kerala. As we ride all the way up to Top Station, you will be stunned by a brilliant view of the stacked mountains and deep valleys below. After this ride, you would have certainly earned yourself a hot crisp cup of tea.

Roll down the hills and we end the cycling near Mattupetty dam. A short transfer and we reach Munnar town. If you are interested in visiting markets, the Munnar market is good to explore.

Munnar TopStaiton.png

Day 5 : Thekkady

We bid adieu to Munnar and head towards the cardamom hills of Kerala, a small town of Kumily. We take in the spectacular views of tea-clad western ghat mountains, near Lockhart Gap. As you are riding, the 360 degrees view of the lush tea plantations will be forever etched in your mind. The smell of cardamom draws you quickly from the tea-lined mountains to the unmanicured mish-mash of cardamom plantations, interjected by pepper vines clinging to Tall trees.

Munnar-Thekkady.png

Day 6 : Thekkady

This morning we take a nature walk in Periyar National Park in search of mongooses, elephants and learn about the flora and fauna in Periyar Tiger Reserve. Later, we head to a garden of spices and learn about the spices from a local farmer.

Itinerary Image

Day 7 : Vagamon

This is going to be a beautiful ride – from the Cardamom Hills of Thekkady to the tea gardens of Vagamon, and that too, through the rubber plantations. A hilly ride, with both dips and steep climbs, but the cool weather helps you grapple with this challenging ride better.

Vagamon is an enchanting hill station where you can either relax or indulge in outdoor activities like paragliding, easy hikes, or exploring nature trails.

Thekkady-Allepey(Vagamon).PNG

Day 8 : Kumarakom

Start the day with an exhilarating downhill for about 15kms and see the landscape changing from tea plantations to rubber and spice plantations. The next stretch remains largely undulating with the last leg being completely flat and along the backwater and paddy fields. A wholesome day of riding with a variety of terrain.

The ride today takes us near to spectacular Vembanad Lake. After reaching here enjoy stunning vistas in all directions.

vagamon-Kumarakom.PNG

Day 9 : Alleppey

Today is planned as a semi-rest day. Enjoy stunning vistas in all directions. Small canals, country canoes, fishermen throwing nets into the water, a coconut climber climbing up the coconut tree, and women working in the rice fields, all come into the scene one after the other.

Our stay today is at a stunning Emerald Isle, a 150 years old ancestral Country House set in 9 acres of secluded grounds in the beautiful waterways and backwater of the Kuttanad region of Central Kerala.

Kumarakom-Allepey.PNG

Day 10 : Kochi

A classic ride along the Kochi coast with glimpses of unevenly spread backwaters accompanying you all the way. Cycling through small fishermen villages and lush coconut trees, we reach one serene end of the backwaters. Hop on to a kayak and immerse yourself in the beautiful backwater sceneries, while we row together through expansive stretches of backwaters.

A fantastic introduction to India

From our first day riding along the canals, to the hills and the plains, the trip was exactly what we wished for. Such a beautiful country, friendly people, and some challenging cycling kept us very happy. We were just so sad it had to all come to an end! We would wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone who enjoys exploring a new place. A fantastic introduction to India with a wonderful guide. Thank you!

Liam S from UK

wonderful time

A really wonderful time immersed in Kerala

Philip Hemsted from UK

Wonderful two week experience

Wonderful two week experience of Kerala backwaters and mountains. Biking 40-60km day, couple of days hiking and a day kayaking, with plenty of time to relax and explore. Great for wildlife. Highlights include watching sunrise from Western Ghats, nature walk in Periyar wildlife sanctuary, kayaking through backwaters. Additional visits to spice gardens, tea factory, boat builder and toddy restaurant made it feel more than a holiday and more of an education. Knowledgable guides and good minibus support made the daily routing comfortable. Cycling in Indian traffic does take some getting used to, especially frequent use of horns and buses running to a timetable. Our guide Dibin was very safety conscious and had no problems in traffic.

A thrilling bike ride through the scenic Athirappilly road

 alt=

Many tourist destinations in Kerala are yet to reopen after the COVID induced lockdown. The roads to these once-crowded places are mostly deserted these days. As a result, such routes with thin traffic offer a good opportunity for a hassle-free bike ride. For instance, a trip from Ernakulam to Athirappilly is a great experience as it takes bikers along one of the most scenic bike routes in the state.

From Ernakulam, start early in the morning, take the National Highway up to Chalakudy and deviate to the Athirappilly road, which is a winding rubberised stretch offering a thrilling ride. The road passes along picturesque scenery and as a bonus, the rising sun presents a charming view between the trees. On the right side of the road flows the Chalakudy River and on both banks is an oil palm plantation.

With entry to visitors banned at Athirappilly waterfalls, bikers would have to stop at a viewpoint nearby and enjoy the scene. Then you can start the return trip taking the Ezhattumugham route.

Head to the bridge across the Chalakudy river from where the surrounding landscape would look stunning. Local people can be seen fishing from rafts, as the river flows as a wide expanse. On the banks, the oil palms would come into view. This is an ideal spot for a dip in the river; however, keep away if there are crowds as the police could intervene.

Take the path through the government-owned oil palm plantation to Ezhattumugham. The stretch is narrow and if you are lucky, some wild elephants could be sighted. Ride slowly and enjoy the cool shade offered by the oil palms. Boards warning travellers not to stop can be seen at some spots.

This road is also parallel to the Chalakudy River, which appears different at various places. While at rocky spots, the water becomes frothy, in other areas it flows smoothly around small islands.

A visit to the hanging bridge of Thumboormuzhy Dam which is situated on this route should also be avoided in view of the pandemic. This semi-forested road stretches for five km and after a check-post, there are homestays offering accommodation for travellers. You are again in an inhabited area, but the path is still narrow and there are canals nearby.

The next point on this route is Malayattoor. Spend some time on the banks of a blue pond along the path; but another attraction, the Mahogany plantation, is yet to open. This stretch also has a forest feel. Ride along Kodanad and Perumbavoor, which offers views of the Periyar River also and take the road back to Ernakulam.

Things to note

best bike trip places in kerala

Avoid stepping into the river at all places. Also, keep off areas where crowds are noticed.

While riding, stick to the plantation road and do not venture into wooded regions.

Do not ride fast as the route is meant for people who love to enjoy the greenery and seek an escape from the urban rush.

Latin america, cycling kerala's backroads, about this cycle tour.

Kerala, a narrow Indian state sandwiched between the Arabian Sea and the mountainous Western Ghats, is known for its tropical greenery, backwaters, wildlife reserves, and tea and spice plantations. Along the way, you will be staying at beautiful heritage hotels, eco-lodges as well as a rice barge converted to a luxurious accommodation. We'll have our fill of ethnic and delicious food, seasoned by local spices. Then the climbing begins as we head up to areas known for its tea plantations and spice estates.

Four wildlife parks are visited on this tour, where we will most likely be able see a herd of elephants. We then head towards Kumarakom from where we spend a relaxing afternoon plying the backwaters on a houseboat, where we'll also spend the night. From here it is a flat ride back to Kochi with time to explore this fascinating historic town. Its location near the equator combined with the sea breezes and cooler temperatures in the highlands makes it perfect for bicycling and lives up to its tagline–God's Own Country.

This tour include a total ascent of 8,926 m and descent of 8,452 m.

Day 2 - Kochi - Thatekkad Ride 66km. +1,146m / -1,123m.

Cycling Kerala's Backroads tour was already the second tour with SpiceRoads and both were handled very professonally in terms of organisation and assistance along the trip. We have been cycling already many countries around the word and we would rate Kerala cycling trip as one of our top five trips! It was so beautiful, quiet roads, stunning landscape, friendliest people along the trip and great food. Not to forget, we had really nice boutique accommodations, with personalised service. I would like to point out Vanilla County Heritage Plantation, Tall Trees and House Tents in Thatekkad and Greenwoods Resort. Also the over-night boat ride was fantastic with beautiful rooms. All in all, an unforgettable trip and without a doubt highly recommended to other cyclists looking for new destinations.

"Spiceroads team was very helpful, before, during and after our trip. They did everything so we could enjoy our trip to the max."

A great way to see the country.

Activity Profile

What's included, what's excluded, trip profile.

The scenery is ever changing as we start cycling from the outskirts of Kochi and then climb the slopes of the Western Ghats, entering tea and spice country.

We ride 544 km in 10 days of riding, but this tour is entirely on paved roads, so the distances are not too strenuous. We designed the route to take in the best of Kerala’s culture, countryside, and wildlife, all while enjoying an active holiday. You’ll ride from sea level to an altitude of 9521 m, but this is over many days, and though there will be some steep climbs, the pace is easy. There’ll be some exhilarating descents, including one that’s 22 km long!

The trip is fully supported, and your guide’s expert knowledge of the area and terrain means that you always know what is coming up in terms of distance and difficulty. This makes a tremendous difference, as does the constant supply of cold drinks and fresh fruit.

Suitability: You can expect some climbs with steep gradients for the first five days of this trip, then some undulating terrain towards the end. There are three days of longer distances, but they include major descents. The hills can be tackled by those with a moderate amount of fitness; however, being physically fit will, of course, be a huge asset, but as the tour is fully supported, the van is always close at hand if needed.

Biking Conditions: This trip is on tarmac roads, and there is no technical riding involved. An air-conditioned support bus travels behind the group, so participants can cycle as much or as little as they like and still enjoy the same views as the rest of the group.

Day 1 Arrive in Kochi

We arrive in Kochi (formerly known as Cochin), a vibrant seaport town that is the perfect jumping off point for our exploration of Kerala. As the airport is more than an hour’s drive from the city centre, we stay near the airport, so we can ride straight from the hotel in the morning.

Day 2 Kochi - Thatekkad

After breakfast, we ride into the countryside, passing a temple, crossing the Periyar River, where, if we are lucky, we see elephants from a nearby camp bathing. We are on the slopes of the Western Ghats mountain range heading towards the Thatekkad Bird Sanctuary, home to rare birds like the crimson-throated barbet, black winged Kite, hornbill, ceylon frogmouth, rose-billed Roller, and blue-winged parakeet, to name but a few. We overnight in unique house tents that have peaceful views of the Periyar River.

best bike trip places in kerala

Day 3 Thatekkad - Munnar

Bird watchers will want to rise early to see how many bird species they can check off before breakfast. Riding from the hotel, we follow the Periyar River. The gradually rising trail winds its way through rubber and pineapple plantations to the Valara forest reserve, passing waterfalls along the way. We continue our gradual climb towards our lunch stop at a local restaurant. The afternoon is still up, as we climb a total of 1314 m into the hills, branching off onto an old estate road to our plantation bungalow nestled amongst cardamom estates, the main crop at this elevation. Those with energy to burn can explore the rest of the valley and then freewheel it back to the bungalow.

best bike trip places in kerala

Day 4 Munnar Hill Station

A 31-km morning climb of about 668 m in elevation takes us up to Munnar Hill Station. Located on the slopes of the Western Ghats at about 1,600 m above sea level, Munnar is situated at the confluence of three mountain streams -- Mudrapuzha, Nallathanni, and Kundala. There are lakes, reservoirs, forests, and several tea plantations carpeting the hillsides. After the hard work of climbing, we arrive in the early afternoon with enough free time, perhaps, to cycle 8 km to town if you want to take in the bazaar.

best bike trip places in kerala

Day 5 Munnar Loop to Top Station

Overlooking the town, Annamali peak at 1980 m is the highest mountain in Kerala and well worth the ride to Top Station (1,950 m) for the fine views over the town and neighbouring Tamil Nadu. The 681 m ascent is gradual with little traffic. The views are worth the effort. After lunch in a restaurant at the summit, there’s the reward of the downhill back!

best bike trip places in kerala

Day 6 Munnar - Periyar

Today's ride is stunning, as we ride out of Munnar on an undulating country road that takes us through small villages with wonderful views of reservoirs and streams to Kattapana town. After lunch, it's just a short ride to our tranquil resort set among a plantation of a wide varieties of spices, such as cardamom, pepper, clove, nutmeg, ginger, and cinnamon. We’ll take a guided walk around the grounds to learn about the various spices.

best bike trip places in kerala

Day 7 Periyar - Thekkady

It is an easy morning ride to Periyar National Park. Snuggled in the Western Ghats, it is one of the world's richest bio-diversity spots, a fascinating natural wildlife sanctuary with more than 40 tigers in residence and many elephant herds. We ride on small roads through deciduous forests and try to catch glimpses of some of the native animals on our way to our resort at the edge of the park. For those who like to shop, there are a few curio shops and art galleries in this hip little town.

best bike trip places in kerala

Day 8 Rest Day

For the free day, relax or go on one of trek or boat safaris to Periyar Park (please book in advance with your guide). Centred around a man-made reservoir, it is possible to see wildlife all year round at the park, although the best time is during the dry season, March to May, when herds of elephants come to the lake to graze by the shore. If you are very lucky, you may even see leopards or tigers coming down to quench their thirst. The park is rated as one of the best wildlife sanctuaries in India for wildlife photography and for bird and tiger watching.

Day 9 Thekkady - Mavady Estate

Riding from the hotel, we descend through cardamom and tea estates, stopping to visit the Connemara Tea Factory on the way to Kuttikanam, if tickets are available. This is a very picturesque road, and great views abound. We take a break from the saddle for a traditional lunch at Kuttikanam. After lunch, we continue our undulating ride out of the tea growing area, with a couple of challenging hills, along one of the most scenic roads in Kerala.

best bike trip places in kerala

Day 10 Mavady Estate- Kottayam

Probably the best ride of the trip, simply stunning views combined with a 22-km descent greet our ride. We travel through rubber and spice plantations as we head to Kottayam, known as the Syrian Christian heartland of Kerala. Here, grand churches dot the landscape, and we break for lunch at Palai to visit St. Thomas Church. Its whitewashed facade and distinct guild ceiling, pre-dates its Portuguese renovation. Relax at our luxury hotel on the shore of India’s second largest lake and enjoy the surroundings.

best bike trip places in kerala

Day 11 Vembanad Lake Cruise

The morning is free for relaxing and enjoying the lake view or for an optional visit to the nearby Kumarakom bird sanctuary. Mid-morning, we board our houseboat for a splendid backwater cruise. The houseboats, converted rice barges, come with a captain, cook and crew; we just sit back, sip long drinks, and watch the world go by.

Day 12 Alleppey - Fort Cochin

Mid-morning, we disembark at Alleppey, which is nicknamed the “Venice of the East” for its intricate canal network. Riding along the old canal road, we view some historic buildings and see why it remains the centre for Coir carpets, made from coconut husks, and prawn farming. Taking the beach road north, our ride ends at Fort Cochin and our boutique hotel.

best bike trip places in kerala

Day 13 Fort Cochin

You can choose an optional morning cycle ride around the back streets of old Cochin, taking in all the major sights of Fort Cochin and Jew Town, before ending at Chinese Fishing Nets, a stone’s throws from our hotel. With a rich background influenced by the Arabs, British, Chinese, Dutch, and Portuguese, there is much to explore by bike, from the bazaars and the old harbour area of the town to the Dutch Palace, Santa Cruz Basilica, Vasco House, or the synagogue, built in 1568 for the Jewish members of Cochin's trading communities, adorned with hand-painted tiles from China and elegant Belgian chandeliers. The afternoon is free to relax at the hotel, poke around the antique and curio shops, or, if you prefer museums, the Museum of Kerala History, Gallery of Contemporary Art, Hill Palace Museum, or Chaithram Art Gallery. And, of course, there are an abundance of shopping and eating opportunities. But save room for our farewell dinner.

Day 14 Departure

We go our separate ways for onward travel or to explore more of incredible India.

Disclaimer: The adventure cycling tours we operate often go beyond the beaten track, and the countries where we ride are not always predictable. Due to these reasons, it is occasionally necessary to reroute or update itineraries. Our guarantee is that we will not change a trip unless for safety or to improve it. Our listed hotels are always accurate at the time of writing, but should we have to change any hotel, it will always be for a similar or better one.

Nuts & Bolts

Because some people can't imagine going on a trip without their own beloved bicycle, we do not provide them as part of this tour. However, you can hire bikes locally for the price listed in the tour pricing section.

If you bring your own bike, please make sure it is in good mechanical order.

Bike Repairs

Basic spares and tools are carried by the guide and on the support vehicle, though we cannot guarantee having spares for every conceivable problem. Carrying a basic tool kit, a spare tube and a pump while riding is recommended.

Wearing a helmet is required on all our biking adventures and is non negotiable. If you do not wear a helmet you will not be allowed to cycle. Your tour leader is trained in first aid and emergency rescue, but to a large degree you must be responsible for your own safety while riding. It is therefore compulsory that you take out travel insurance that will cover you for a mountain biking tour.

You will be led by a local English-speaking guide and if the group is 9 people or more we will add another guide to the tour. All our guides are well informed in the history, culture and religions of the area where you are biking and are skilled at passing that knowledge on to you. Your guide is also medically trained and an experienced cyclist, able to handle most minor repairs en route.

The Nitty Gritty

Passports and visas.

There are no compulsory vaccinations although it is strongly recommended that you are vaccinated against Typhoid, and Hepatitis A and B. Tetanus and polio vaccinations should also be up to date at the time of travel. Please speak to your doctor/physician for the most recent information.

As India is such a large country, the climate and weather conditions vary across the vast region. However, the country is divided into six main climatic zones ranging from arid desert in the west, alpine tundra and glaciers in the north, and humid tropical in the southwest and the island territories.

We have tours in the following regions

Rajasthan: weather can be divided into four seasons - summer, monsoon, post-monsoon, and winter. Summer from April to June is the hottest season with temperatures ranging from 32C to 45C. Monsoon extends from July to September with a slight drop in temperature but plenty of rain. The post-monsoon period is from October to November where the lowest temperatures can reach as low as 18C. From December to March is the cold season and the best time to visit Rajasthan. Temperatures range from 15C-18C with little or no humidity.

Kerala: mostly has a tropical wet climate, which can be divided into three seasons. Summer is from February to May and is generally hot and humid. Monsoon season begins in June till around October or November. December to January holds the best weather for travel as it is cooler and the rains have subsided.

Leh/Ladakh has a cold desert like climate with somewhat extreme conditions. summers bring in harsh direct sunlight at such high altitudes while winters can get as cold as below freezing point. Lowest ever recorded was -23C. May to August is the best time for tourists to enjoy the weather and everything it has to offer.

Sikkim: has a very temperate climate with enjoyable 5 seasons. Depending on the location and altitude, the weather can vary. In Summer, the lowest temperatures reach 13C up to 28°C while in winter Temperature between 0C to 13C. The monsoon season hits around June to September.

Meals are included in the itinerary where B = breakfast, L = lunch, and D = dinner. Any special dietary requirements can also be catered for as well. Please let us know at the time of booking.

Keeping you completely hydrated is a job we take very seriously. Cold water and energy-restoring drinks are included in the tour price while riding. Soft drinks and other beverages during meals are not included. Beer and alcohol are available, but NOT included in the price.

Solo Travelers

SpiceRoads does not require you to pay a surcharge for traveling alone. We will arrange for you to share accommodation with another traveler of the same gender and if we can not match you up we will provide a single room at no extra charge. If you prefer not to share a single supplement is payable to guarantee your own room. The cost of the single supplement is listed above.

Extra Expenses

We recommend that you tuck away a few extra dollars a day for incidentals. Included entrance fees are those for the listed sites and national parks that are part of the itinerary. Any other site fees are not included.

The currency is the Indian rupee (Rs) and there are ATMs in major cities and most towns that take international cards. However, we suggest that you withdraw money at the airport at the start of your tour. During the tour, our guide will inform you of the ATM locations in different cities.

Hi y'all, just wanted to thank all of you for a fantastic adventure - we have come back inspired in so many ways. I'm not sure I can say anything more than has already been said but just to let you know we miss you already.

The trip still features large in our pub conversations. I think our friends may be getting a bit bored with it.

Kerala on a Bike: The Road to Self Discovery

Photo of Akhill N Menon

We all have that one close buddy we can turn to always, our go-to person. Mine was my granddad. He was over 70 years old when I celebrated my 22nd birthday. And to a nice mallu-kid turned spoiled-brat of the North like me, he said only one thing that day, "Don't forget your roots, buddy!" And it was three months before he left us all, due to that cancer that ate him from within, that he spoke at length to me about home, his or mine I was yet to figure out.

He and I played chess together, listened to new age artists and watched new movies together, had a mug of our favorite Sunday beer together, or even played the PlayStation 3 together! Born into a family where my parents moved out-of-town, and transferred as fast as the Delhi Metro being constructed, for me home was wherever granddad was!

I never felt the need to go any farther than five meters around his rocking chair, especially in his last three months, to know more and more about where I came from, where he came from, where we belonged to, and where he said his soul would return to-God's Own Country- Kerala .

My granddad passed away on a sudden unfortunate Sunday morning. His body lay in the middle of our living room in our 2-week old house in Bangalore , surrounded by relatives crying and sobbing in their best white clothes! And all that came to my mind was, "Hey, he's sleeping! Don't disturb my poor old buddy. He hates a crowd, so just leave him alone till he awakes from his deep slumber."

But heart of heart, as difficult as it was going to be accepting the bitter truth, he was, indeed, dead! Physically, he wasn't going to be around anymore, and I knew of nothing more that made sense in my world anymore! I wanted to get away. I wanted to be with him, lay in his lap like I did as a little boy and find that point of contentment and peace within. It was lost at the moment, he was lost and so was my world, and I had to find it all back!

So, I took the next bus from Bangalore to Kasaragoda, a town in northern Kerala and the birthplace of my granddad. At sunrise following that overnight journey, I was standing on the doorsteps of what was once home to my granddad as a kid. It was archaic and beautiful and stood the testimony of time, along with that old Bullet in the garage, the very bike my granddad often boasted about.

I took the bike and after a day of good servicing, it was up and running for the adventures that lay ahead! Tracking down my route to a simple North to South trail, I chose to pick out my stopover destinations according to my granddad's fables. However, what started out as a bike ride on a 50-year-old (might I say, well maintained) bike in search of my granddad's trails, went on to becoming a journey that led to discovering my path!

In the quest to find his lost essence, I rediscovered and re-established my identity; understood the need to connect to my roots; I came to terms with reality, accepted it, got my closure; and eventually, I understood where I came from, where he came from, where we belonged to, and that his soul was somewhere dormant within the spirits of myself- and I knew I was ready to fly, ready to carve my niche and I was confident I could- just like he had always been so confident about me. I now realized the true meaning of travelling that he once summoned me about. I think traveling is not just about discovering places, but all about rediscovering yourself. And, I haven't stopped since my first bike ride in the trails of God's Own Country, Kerala.

Athirappilly Water Falls

On one side, I could kneel to pray at the Lady of Dolors Basilica, Palayur Church and the Lourdes Cathedral, and on the other hand, I bowed down to offer prayers at the Cheraman Juma Masjid, Vadakumnathan Temple and Thiruvambadi Temple. The next morning, with a half-day stopover at the ancient pilgrim center of Guruvayoor, I headed off for a ride through the Athirapally & Vazhachal Waterfalls.

Eravikulam National Park Road

The highest peak of South India, Anamudi, tempted the adventurer in me, and called me towards its trekking trails. The rest of the day I took my camera around the famous Eravikulam National Park to click some of the most exotic flora and fauna of the region.

The next day began with the ride towards Mattupetty and its scenic lakes and masonry dam, which gave way to a luxurious indulgence in a boat ride. Pretty close to Munnar and Mattupetty were the evergreen forests encircling the Chinnakanal and Anayirangal dams and after a sumptuous early dinner, I rode through the night to the next destination on my map.

If you want to experience waking up to a sunrise on the backwaters of Kerala, this is definitely the right place to start. I could say from personal experience that granddad was born in paradise!

My journey began at an old ancestral house and the joy of riding my bike led me to ecstasy as I rode amidst the plush green layers of Kasaara trees passing lakes and rivulets and streams. I headed towards the Bekal Fort and enjoyed the rest of the sunset from its famous viewing point followed by a slow ride against the winds on the sands of Pallikere and Kappil Beach.

The day ended with a sumptuous Kerala temple feast at Ananthapura Lake Temple followed by a peaceful sleep in the dorm beds of Anandasaram. The next morning I was off to my next destination, a must-visit for all tea and spice lovers, Wayanad!

A trekker’s delight, Wayanad brought alive the aroma of spices, and the essence of tea and coffee together with some amazing bakeries during my bike ride. The wildlife sanctuaries were perfect spots for some alone time with the lens to satisfy the wildlife aficionado in me.

I trailed my rubber prints from the north, at Chethalayam Falls, riding all across the Sulthan Bathery region towards the southern and southeastern parts. Even though I had no plans of staying the night, my itinerary changed as I was lured by the steep climb and trekking gear that awaited me to conquer the Chembra Peak.

Arresting myself at a Kerala Tourism guest house on reaching the hilltop, I witnessed spectacular sights of the district from atop, making for an unforgettable experience. Trekking the Neelimal Rroute and rappelling in Meenmurthy waterfalls were the last things I did before retiring for the night. I woke up to a sunrise at the banks of the beautiful Banasura Sagar Dam.

Post breakfast and a stopover at a petrol pump, I headed off to see my late grandma’s place in Thrissur. With the past two days spent in the lap of greenery and serenity, I didn’t much enjoy the hustle-bustle that came from what had become a grand city in southern India, yet I was in awe of its technology parks and religious diversity!

As soon as I entered the Idukki district, the air seemed a little different, a little changed. While riding past the confluence of the three famous mountain streams, I could see subtle colonial influences in Munnar's every nook and corner. Its tea plantations, winding streets and cobbled lanes, and lush forest covers made it a perfect hill station.

Granddad used to say that Vagamon cannot be read about, but only experienced! And, experience it, I did. I rode up to the velvet greens and mountain breeze of Vagamon for a perfect Paragliding opportunity amidst the hills. As if the view wasn’t enough, my landing spot brought out an emotional reaction that even I hadn’t expected.

As I glided my way down, the winds carrying my flight brought back the essence of my granddad, of my ancestry, of my roots. I landed on a nice green hill spot, took off my shoes, and just closed my eyes, ready to be drowned in the essence of this beautiful landscape.

The next destination was a backwater symphony coming alive as I rode into the coastal city of Alappuzha. With the hills of the Western Ghats on one side, and the sea on the other, it was the best highway ride of my life! What my granddad often revered as Allepey (as it was formerly called), was true to its extravagant title “Venice of the East”.

Lapped into the straits of land surrounded by freshwater lagoons and the Arabian Sea, it’s a foodie’s delight too, with some mouth-watering seafood on offer. From Kayaking my way into its waters to just experiencing a night in a houseboat in the backwater lagoons, this spot added more to my adventures than I had expected.

Starting early in the morning from Alappuzha, I reached Varkala much in time for some late lunch. After a little fresh toddhy (the local liquor), and some rest, I set out to rediscover more panoramic views of Kerala in the dramatic edges of high, red limestone cliffs, which made Varkala a unique and unforgettable experience.

As advised by a few relatives I met up at Alappuzha, I headed off for a typical touristy indulgence in the Ayurvedic treatments. And might I add that they don’t just provide physical relaxation. For me, it was a mentally and emotionally rejuvenating experience too. Fresh, up and about, I was all saddled up for a sixty-kilometer ride to Kovalam, via the state capital Thiruvananthapuram.

What I always knew as Trivandrum, was not much of a high point of my trip. It’s skyscrapers and wildlife enclosures, however, were quite a recent addition to its otherwise serene semi-urbane landscape, and I had spent some (vaguely remembered) holidays with a few relatives in the city.

While nothing really excited me, except for the cultural, stone-carved wonder towering and visible from far, Shri Padmanabhaswamy Temple. But, the still standing community churches and temples and the small winding lanes that led to them awakened some repressed memories of my childhood, which I, as a kid, walked down, hand in hand with my granddad. The next morning I couldn’t wait to get my knick-knacks together and head straight to Kovalam.

Finally, I rested my bike on the bay of a rocky promontory. The beach, and its crescents painted on the canvas of the Arabian Sea waves. This calm retreat was a perfect end to my trip. From sunbathing at noon to Catamaran-cruising under the clear starlit sky, life didn’t seem to cease at a single wasted moment on this beach.

I had thought of staying for just a night, but the tapering end of my trip got extended to a weeklong yoga retreat, which I enjoyed as the waves hit the porch of my rented beach house. I could never get enough of my adventurous saga, yet I had to reconsider my pocket and start my journey back home.

However, I realized who I actually was during my journey of finding my granddad's essence; sitting on the very same bike that he had, about 50 years back, and lying back on the sands, close to the sea, I saw his reflection within me!
