The Coca-Cola Store in Las Vegas is a monumental homage to the iconic beverage brand. Located right on the Las Vegas Strip, this is where you can find all of your favorite Coca-Cola products, taste exotic Coke flavors from around the world, cuddle with a polar bear, and have a fun experience that’s great for the entire family.

The Las Vegas Coca Cola Store Experience

Hours spent exploring Las Vegas Blvd mean you’ll be more than ready for a refreshing visit at the Coca-Cola Store as soon you reach the giant Coke bottle at the Showcase Mall. From the moment you walk through the doors, the world outside disappears, and you’re transported to another realm at this immersive retail destination.

  • Custom Bottles at the Coca Cola Store

The Coca-Cola Store Las Vegas is different from most other entertaining experiences in the city. For starters, visiting the Coca-Cola store is free and fun, which is a great perk, especially for families with kids.

Of course, there are plenty of ways to spend money at the Coca-Cola Store Las Vegas, including impulse buying all of the irresistible Coca-Cola brand merchandise. Grab your favorite drink and discover one of the most unique and entertaining experiences for soda lovers in Las Vegas.

Meet the Coca Cola Polar Bear

meet the coca cola polar bear

All Coca-Cola lovers are familiar with the brand’s iconic polar bear mascot. Visitors at the Coca-Cola Store Las Vegas will have the chance to meet the Coca-Cola Polar Bear in person, give the furry creature a giant hug, shake its hand, and take a few pictures of your meeting with Coca-Cola’s hottest celebrity. If you have kids in your group, they will love meeting the Coca-Cola Polar Bear face to face.

The Coca Cola Fountain

the coca cola

On the second floor of the Coca-Cola Store, Las Vegas, is the famed Coca-Cola soda fountain. It’s here that you can explore your love of the Coca-Cola brand and relax with some true refreshment.

For many people, the fountain is their favorite part of the Coca-Cola Store, and with good reason. This is where you get to sip on all the different flavors of Coca-Cola brand drinks, including international beverages that you’ve probably never tasted before.

Tastes of the World

One of the most cool experiences at the Coca-Cola fountain is the Tastes of the World tray.

This worldly soda tasting experience consists of two trays, each lined with eight different sodas, for a total of 16 different tastes for you to try from all over the world. So much soda is way too much for one person to drink, so bring a few thirsty partners with you for the super fun tasting experience.

There’s a numbered key that tells you details like where the drink is from and what the flavor is. Some of the international flavors include the Beverly Soda from Italy, Sparletta Sparberry from Zimbabwe, Fanta Pineapple from Greece, and Lift Manzana from Mexico, along with a great selection of other flavored carbonated drinks on the World Tray.

So, let’s say you’re not really feeling adventurous enough to try all the exotic flavors from around the globe on the Taste of the World Tray. Don’t worry, there’s an option for you that’s just as delicious, along with being sweet and creamy too. While you’re visiting the second floor of the Coca Cola Store Las Vegas you can order up the third tray on the menu – the Float Tray.

The Float Tray is a selection of eight different flavored sodas, all topped with vanilla ice cream. Some flavors are traditional, like a root beer float, while others are more unique, like the Fanta Grape Float. Either way, they’re all tasty – especially when you’re craving something cool and sweet.

Merchandise & Gifts

Merchandise & Gifts

The Coca Cola Store Las Vegas is more than a place to enjoy a nice cool soda on a hot day. It’s also a place where you can shop till you drop, filling your bags with more Coca Cola product and accessories than you can possibly imagine. If there’s any place in the world to get Coke themed merchandise, it’s at this location in Las Vegas.

The retail space is expansive and features a complete line of Coca Cola merchandise, including cool mugs and glasses, shirts, polar bear plushies, Coca Cola Las Vegas memorabilia, and one of a kind collectibles and other stuff that you won’t find anywhere else during your visit to Sin City.

The retail merchandise area is a great place to explore, either by yourself or with friends and family.

Lots of Coca-Cola related items/merchandise and other brands that the company owns. There is a restaurant on the second floor that sells drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. We got the around the world tray, I highly recommend just splitting with your friends. We shared a tray with three people and we didn't finish any of the drinks. The around the world tray features 16 different coke flavors from all over the world. We all took turns taking small sips of the drinks. This was definitely a very fun experience to share with your friends and family. 100% not all the drinks would suit your taste, because we did not like most of it, but it was a unique experience to taste what other countries like. It was also fun to see what my friends liked and didn't like.

Security guard in the front was very friendly but the cashier and managers were kind of rude. I was at the register getting ready to pay and the cashier rung it up and said the total. I was paying by card and it said tap so I tapped. The cashier just stared at the screen for a while then called the manager. He said I tapped too early and the register opened which it shouldn't do if paying by card. My guess is he pressed cash instead of card but tried to blame me instead because he said the transaction went through as cash. The manager wasn't any better. She just asked if the charge had gone through on my credit card. I had no idea if it had since it just happened. They said they could recharge me and I could dispute with the bank if charged twice. Not the friendliest people.

I had to bring my coca-cola loving son here to try the 16 coca colas around the world (TASTES OF THE WORLD TRAY). First of all, the line was super long, it took about 30 minutes as there were only 3 employees working. Also, it was hard to find seating and pretty tight. Onto the sodas, they came in 2 trays: Tray 1: Stoney Tangawizi - Tanzania Stoney Tangawizi is a naturally flavored sparkling ginger beer beverage. Tangawizi means "ginger" in Swahili, where it is a traditional native herb. Fanta Strawberry - Panama Reminiscent of strawberry cream soda, Kist Strawberry is a sweet, sparkling beverage only available in Panama. Sprite Cucumber - Romania Sprite originally launched in 1961 and is now enjoyed in over 190 countries around the world. Sprite Cucumber from Romania has a crisp cucumber flavor, providing a refreshing twist on this classic lemon-lime beverage. Lift Apple - Indonesia A favorite in Central America, Lift Manzana, with its refreshing candy apple taste, was originally launched in 1995. Due to its popularity, there are now several other flavors of Lift available across Central America and Mexico. Mazoe Blackberry - Zimbabwe Available as a sweet blackberry flavored syrup in Africa, Mazoe Blackberry is diluted with water to make a beverage. Sparletta Sparberry - Zimbabwe This beverage, launched in 1955, tastes like raspberry cream soda and is available exclusively in several countries across central and southern Africa. Del Valle Jamaica & Nada - Mexico Jamaica & Nada (pronounced "ha-my-kah") is a refreshing, still beverage available in Mexico. It features a rich, ruby red color and the unique tart and floral flavors of hibiscus. Thums Up - India Featuring the taste of a strong cola with a spicy bite, Thums Up is the best-selling soft drink brand in India and the first beverage from that country to be available in Taste It! Because of its strong taste, Thums Up is often viewed as a mature, masculine drink with the "Taste of Thunder." Tray 2 Beverly - Italy Introduced in Italy in 1969, Beverly is a non-alcoholic aperitif that is typically consumed before meals. Because of its distinctive taste, it is one of our most popular, must-try drinks. Bonaqua Fruits Apple Pear - Germany First launched in Germany in 1988, Bonaqua gradually spread across the European market, where it is widely available today. Bonaqua Fruits Apple Pear is a lightly sweetened, sparkling beverage with a mild fruity taste. Fuse Tea Ice Tea Berries - Georgia FUSE Tea Ice Tea Berries is a fresh, contemporary fusion of black tea and fruit flavors. Aquarius Libre - Spain Aquarius Libre, with less than 5 calories in a 12 fl oz cup, is a still hydration beverage with added electrolytes and a pleasant lemon taste. Fanta Sour Plum - China Suan Mei Tang or Sour Plum Tea is a traditional Chinese beverage that has existed for over 1,000 years. Fanta Sour Plum has a savory, sweet and tart flavor that is considered by many to be the ultimate sparkling thirst quencher on a hot day. Fanta Kolita - Costa Rica Fanta Kolita, available exclusively in Costa Rica, is a sparkling beverage with a smooth blend of exotic, floral fruitiness. Its sweet and slightly tangy character may remind you of grenadine. Inca Kola - Peru Created in Peru in 1935, Inca Kola is a golden yellow sparkling beverage with a sweet, fruity taste that many compare to liquid bubblegum. Chefs often incorporate the beverage into signature Peruvian dishes through traditional gourmet cooking. Fanta Melon Frosty - Thailand With the taste of sweet melon, this refreshing sparkling beverage is beloved in Thailand's sunny, tropical climate. It was an okay experience, we didn't even finish all the drinks and liked only 3 of them. I wish they were colder or served over ice. Sorry, just my opinion.

Upstairs at the Coca-Cola store there's a café that serves drinks and has a taste of the world flight option. This is something I really recommend because it's pretty interesting at how different the popular tastes around the world for Coca-Cola are. It was really fun tasting all the different flavors even some of the ones that weren't so pleasant for my pallete. I personally didn't find any that were hard to swallow. However I could imagine that there were a few that would cause a person to grimace. I also heard that they rotate the flavors pretty often so it's definitely something that I can do every time I visit and have a different experience.. I like trying different things and this is a great opportunity for me

I previously had the Coca-Cola flight at the store in Orlando, but my friends wanted to try it, so we went to the one in Vegas! I definitely recommend this spot as something fun to do. The flight came with 16 samples of Coke products from various countries. I personally think the US has the best coke, but it was a fun experience being able to see what other countries' samples tasted like. I would also recommend splitting the flight as each sample is a couple of sips, so it'll definitely be enough for a few people! :) It was also very fairly priced for the experience.

Enjoyed and was truly impressed with this store. Plenty of memorabilia that is reasonably priced. In one of the floors they have a place where you Can sample various Coca Cola products. There is even a sale section with discounted merchandise. This place has a lot of foot traffic so be prepared to dodge crowds to navigate through the store.

Hi, We are glad that you had a memorable and enjoyable experience. We are glad that you loved the World of Coca-Cola's gift shop along with the Taste It! Exhibit. Please feel free to come back anytime. Thanks

Photo of Kathleen A.

As a tourist stop, this place has a lot of cool Coca Cola merchandise. Are the prices a little high? Yes but they have unique items. I was excited to get a small thermal mug in the shape of a Cherry Coca Cola. They also had the option to buy a different mystery items of the day at various prices which was fun! I am glad to be able to say I checked the international soda sampler off my bucket list. While I am happy I shared with a couple other people, I can definitely say that if you grew up with a certain flavor, it's hard to taste something with such different flavors. Or was not my favorite thing at the store. Customer service is great and the security guard was awesome.

$26 for the float and soda flight. I believe its $16-18 for just the one. If you're not a huge float person, just try the world wide flights then. The classic float and fanta was great, but the grape soda and sprite float were not yummy at all. The vanilla was great though! Staff was very kind letting us order before closing but the clean up was very adamant about finishing and getting out I highly recommend the world wide flight, the flavors were so unique and gave me a heads up on when to NOT get coca cola in some countries. The green one was my favorite!

This store is so amazing. Even if you aren't a fan of coke products, it is still worth a look around. We walked in yesterday, and they had this retro 1970s line of merch right in front. It was so stinkin' cute! They have all products coke makes. On the second floor, they have a drink stand that sells modified drinks. We bought the drinks from around the world tray. You get 16 little sample cups for 16 bucks. They place them on trays labeled and give you a paper where all the different sodas came from. This is so fun. I split it with my friend, but I could easily see a family split it. If you are a fan of the coca cola polar bear or Penguin, this store is for you.!

Hi Jenna! We love hearing from our guests, and we're glad that you really enjoyed your visit with us :)

Merch/brand stores aren't really thing, so I'm mainly reviewing on the coke flight. A pretty cool experience to try drinks from all over the world. Most of the drinks were interesting and some were big misses for my group. Still fun though. The float drinks were a bit disappointing in that we were also expecting unique drinks instead of just sprite and fanta, but they were still good to try. Overall a fine experience.

Coca Cola Store Las Vegas: Tasting & Shopping

There’s so much to do in Vegas, but one attraction that’s easy to fit in while you’re in town is a trip to the Coca-Cola Las Vegas store, a monument to the iconic soda that has practically become a symbol of America and Americana.

Inside, you’ll find a wide range of attractions, different Coke products to sample and all the merchandise you could ever dream of – and to give you an idea of what to expect, in this post, we tell you everything you need to know about Coca-Cola Las Vegas.

coca cola store las vegas

So what is the Coca-Cola Las Vegas store ? Well, for a start, it’s more than just somewhere to buy a bottle of “The Real Thing”.

Rather, it’s part store, part museum and part attraction – and it’s dedicated to Coca-Cola and everything related to it.

You’ll find plenty of quirky Coke-related memorabilia, all kinds of merchandise and gifts, lots of Insta-worthy photo ops – and of course, the opportunity to sample not just regular Coke but also a whole range of other versions you’ll probably never come across anywhere else.

And one of the best things about this fun attraction? It’s completely free for anyone to visit.

So now let’s have a look in more detail at some of the things you can expect to find there.

The Coca-Cola Fountain and Coca-Cola Samplers

The Coco-Cola Las Vegas store spans several levels, and up on Level 2, you’ll find one of the store’s most popular attractions – the Coco-Cola Fountain.

There, you’ll have the chance to sample a range of different Coke flavors and products you’ve probably never heard of, including special editions from around the world.

Tastes of the World

One of the most popular sample packs is the Tastes of the World tray, which gives you the opportunity to try a flight tray of several different versions of Coke that are produced in different countries but aren’t usually available in the States.

Tastes of the World

For example, some of the flavors on offer include Inca Kola from Peru, Stoney Tangawizi from Tanzania, Kinley Lemon from England, Smart Watermelon from China, Sunfill Mint from Djibouti, Ciel Aquarius from Mexico, Beverly from Italy and Mezzo Mix from Germany.

However, there are even more available besides just these, and they’re all equally intriguing. Each cup is accompanied by a card identifying it so you know what you’re drinking.

This is not like some pretentious wine tasting where you only get a tiny drop of each type either – rather, you should expect a good-sized portion of each, around 4oz per serving, so with a tray of 16, you’ll do extremely well to finish them all!

If the flight tray doesn’t interest you, another popular option is the Float Tray, a selection of eight different sodas like root beer or Fanta Grape, all served with a dollop of vanilla ice cream for an extra-creamy kick.

Bear in mind that the various flight tasting options aren’t free, so you’ll have to be prepared to pay if you want to try them. Depending on the option you choose, prices start from around $10.

Other Attractions

Most visitors to the Coke store sample at least one of the flight trays, but there are other attractions too.

You’ll see one of them before you even go inside the store – because it’s the world’s biggest Coke bottle that forms part of the store’s façade outside.

The bottle was created in the 1990s, and it now adorns the front of the store, advertising where to head for your fix of Coca-Cola and visible from right down the strip.

The Coke bottle is a popular landmark for photos with hundreds of tourists, and you’ll find another irresistible photo op inside when you meet the Coca-Cola Polar Bear, a life-sized version of Coca-Cola’s beloved emblem.

That’s not all, and there’s plenty more to check out when you get there – but we won’t say any more here because we don’t want to spoil the surprise!

Merchandise, Memorabilia and Souvenirs

coca cola Souvenirs 2

Apart from the attractions, the store offers an almost bewildering range of merchandise, including apparel, novelty giant bottles, glasses, mugs, accessories, collectables and so much more.

For example, do you want a mini branded Coca-Cola refrigerator? Well, you can buy one in the store. Or maybe you didn’t know you wanted a Coke-branded toaster – but you will when you see it on display!

Much of the merch also has “Las Vegas” written on it, giving you plenty of options for souvenirs to take back from your trip.

One quirky gift idea on offer is the chance to customize your own Coke bottles.

You get to choose the color of the bottles, and then you choose the writing – you can include up to 18 characters.

This way, you can take something unique back to give to someone when you get home – or perhaps you’d prefer to order a set of customized bottles for a party to add a touch of class and really impress your friends.

In short, if you love Coke and the Coca-Cola brand, you’ll have no shortage of stuff to spend your money on in the Coca-Cola Las Vegas store.

How Much Is Entry to The Coca-Cola Las Vegas Store?

Entrance to the Coca-Cola Las Vegas store is completely free.

Are the Coke Samplers Free?

No. Although you can go into the store for free, if you one to try one of the sampler packs, you’ll need to pay. Prices start at around $10.

Why Is Coke so Rare in Vegas?

Despite the presence of the Coca-Cola store on the Vegas Strip, most of the resorts have contracts with Pepsi, so this is the cola you’re most likely to find in Vegas.

Outside of the Coca-Cola store itself, McDonald’s is one of the only other places in town where you’ll be able to find Coke.

Is the Coca-Cola Store a Good Option for Families?

Yes! The Coca-Cola store is a perfect option for families for several reasons. First, there’s something for everyone, and kids will love taking their photo with the Coca-Cola Polar Bear or sampling a range of weird and wonderful Coke flavors.

And then, of course, it’s free to go in – so after spending all your cash on some of the more expensive attractions in Vegas, you’ll probably be relieved to give your wallet a break!

Is It Worth Visiting without Kids?

Of course! The Coca-Cola Las Vegas store is great fun for anyone, as long as you enjoy drinking Coke, want to see all the memorabilia and perhaps plan on taking a souvenir or two home with you after your trip.

Is There Parking Nearby?

If you need to drive to the Coke store, you can park in one of the nearby resorts such as MGM Grand . However, at MGM Grand, you will need to pay.

There are some other places on the Strip with free parking – for example, at SAHARA, The STRAT, The Venetian, Fashion Show Mall and Wynn – but some of these are a bit further away, so you’ll need to walk.

How Do You Reach Coca-Cola Las Vegas by Car?

Here are the directions for reaching Coca-Cola Las Vegas by car if you are driving yourself.

Try a Unique International Tasting Flight at Coca Cola Las Vegas

The Vegas Strip is one of our favorite spots in the world to take a weekend break be it to bar hop, see a show, have a golf break, or even just eat some delicious meals.

Unlike the world renowned buffets (and stellar Buffet of Buffet pass ) and restaurants from chefs of equal stature, our this food related experience is a bit more on the unique side- the Tastes of the World flight.

Sodas of the World at Coca Cola Las Vegas

Coke World Las Vegas tasting tray

Book Your Trip Today Flights | Hotels | Apartments | Rental Car | Cruises | Day Tours

Take a trip to the often-missed upstairs cafe in Coca Cola world, you can get a tray of 16 samples of local sodas found around the world from China, to Mauritius, to England, and back again.

For the price you might expect to receive thimble sized drinks; however, each portion is substantial (4 ounces, or ~1/3 of a can) and almost impossible to finish all of them.

Luckily the tasting tray is so varied in the selection that it is easy to pass on some of the weirder flavors, such as pine nut or a semi-sparkling selection from Italy. Others like the watermelon or apple from China were so sweet that they were reminiscent of a Jones Soda and downed in one quick gulp.

The corresponding sugar high is enough to get anyone through an entire day in Vegas without breaking the bank on a crazy expensive cocktail, energy drink, or fountain soda.

Taste of the World at Coca Cola Las Vegas

The entire list of soda's available at Coca-Cola world on the Taste of the World flight (from our visit at least) are as follows, and keep in mind there is also a Coca-Cola float tasting tray available for those wanting a bit more as well!

  • Inca Kola from Peru
  • Sunfill Blackcurrant from Mauritius
  • Stoney Tangawizi from Tanzania
  • Sparletta Sparberry from Zimbabwe
  • Vegitabeta from Japan
  • Simba Guarana from Paraguay
  • Smart Watermelon from China
  • Kinley Lemon from England
  • Krest Ginger Ale from Mozambique
  • Ciel Aquarius from Mexico
  • Bibo Kiwi Mango from South Africa
  • Bibo Pine Nut from South Africa
  • Sunfill Mint from Djibouti
  • Smart Apple from China
  • Beverly from Italy
  • Mezzo Mix from Germany

Coke Vegas Store

Whether you'll like all of them is one thing, but this Las Vegas tasting experience will be incredibly enjoyable for any group.  For that reason, the tastings at Coca Cola World makes one of our top Vegas experiences!

The ice cream challenge is the best! I highly recommend it but definitely with a group. Two people worked out perfectly as we ate as much as we wanted and weren’t too stuffed. Any bigger and the groups would be there for the novelty and not to indulge in a lot of ice cream

2 cool experiences in Vegas we didn’t know about!! We’ll definitely keep them in mind for our next visit to Sin City.

Excellent LV to-dos. I gave up cola a few years ago but not ice cream. I will have to try those exotic flavors.

Awesome! I’ve been wanting to try the ice cream challenge for years, but it’s daunting for one person alone. (I’m not THAT much of an ice cream fan.) Haven’t tried the Coke tasting in Vegas yet, but it sounds like Ice Station Cool at Disney World (which is free).

Why Vegas' Coca-Cola Store Is So Worth Its Weight In Bubbles

Vegas' Coca-Cola store is the official destination for soda lovers everywhere, from its tours to the custom merch found in its gift shop.

People visit Las Vegas to participate in thousands of unique activities and enjoy the city's most splendid attractions. From casinos, hikes, and museums to professional sports and excellent theater watching, Las Vegas has everything one can ever wish for. For instance, the city is home to the one of its kind Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. Moreover, people enjoy visiting The Venetian resort and entertainment complex, the Hoover Dam, the Peppermill, the Caesars Palace , and many more places in Las Vegas.

Additionally, The Fountains of Bellagio are one of the most unique landmarks distinguishing the city with their marvelous dancing waters that impress anyone watching them. However, there's one particular place that visitors to Las Vegas must head to: the Coca-Cola store in the city.

What Makes The Coca-Cola Store In Las Vegas Worth Visiting

Many families enjoy visiting the Coca-Cola store in Las Vegas. The place is located right on the Strip, down the street from the renowned Fountains of Bellagio, and next to M&M's World. Several reasons are behind the remarkable success of this Coca-Cola store. For instance, visitors have the chance to purchase any item with the Coca-Cola logo on it. T-shirts for men, women, and kids, kitchen items, soda-flavored chapsticks, and ball caps can all be found on the store's first floor.

Moreover, people have the chance to ride the escalator up to the second floor if they don't find what they're looking for downstairs. Here, they will enjoy looking at or buying Frisbees, volleyballs, puzzles, Christmas ornaments, and more. Anything visitors wish for, they can find at the Coca-Cola store in Las Vegas. However, if people visiting are not into Coca-Cola branded items, there are still many other things to do when hitting the unique shop. This includes enjoying a drink at the awesome Beverage Bar on the second floor. With two unique offerings available, one can never go there and not be satisfied.

Tastes of the World Tray

People taking this option at the Beverage Bar will have the chance to try 16 Coca-Cola products worldwide, including India, Tanzania, and Chile. The cost for this offering amounts to around $12. However, many people taking the Tastes of the World Tray option were making bizarre face gestures when trying Bjare Lingonberry, Stoney Tangawizi, or Smart Watermelon. Moreover, most of the people sitting on the "I'm done" counter had almost all 16 samples unfinished, which meant they lost their money for nothing. This is why it is recommended that they try the second unique offering below.

The Float Tray option at the Beverage Bar offers eight cups of different Coca-Cola products from America along with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The flavors available include the Coca-Cola Float, Sprite Float, Barq's Red Creme Float, Pibb Xtra Float, Cheery Coke Float, Barq's Root Beer Float, Fanta Grape Float, and Fanta Orange Float.

This Bear Is Worth Taking A Photo With At The Coca-Cola Store

The Coca-Cola tall polar bear is a famous character that has already been on TV. He is also available at the Coca-Cola store in Las Vegas, waiting for people to snap a shot with him. People who have their turn to take a photo with the polar bear must put down their bags and purses and stand in front of him. Moreover, people who have their camera with them can hand it to one of the employees, who will happily take a few shots for the visitors with the bear.

  • Information: After taking some photos with the polar bear, people get a card with a number on it. On the photo counter on the second floor, the grey backgrounds of the pictures will be modified and replaced by great colorful settings. The resulting photos will be unique. However, people will have to pay a price for the images and receive a free Christmas ornament with that purchase.

In the cover story of its Future Of Music issue, Rolling Stone said, “Funny, charming, and unapologetically raunchy, she’s the Puerto Rican star everyone wants to work with.” Young Miko was named Nuevo Artista Del Año ( New Artist Of The Year) at the recent Latin American Music Awards while “Classy 101,” her collaboration with FEID , took honors for Canción Global Latina del Año (Global Latin Song of the Year) and Mejor Colaboración – Urbano (Best Collaboration – Urban). Earlier this year, Young Miko received the Impact Award at the 2024 Billboard Women in Music Awards and was named Best New Artist (Latin Pop / Urban) at the 2024 iHeartRadio Music Awards.

Alex Hassilev, the singing, songwriting, guitar and banjo virtuoso who was the last surviving original member of 1960s folk trio the Limeliters, died of cancer April 21 at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank. He was 91.

Hassilev was the youngest member of the Limeliters, whose other original members were bassist and comic spokesman Lou Gottlieb (1923-1996) and star tenor Glenn Yarbrough (1930-2016). The band was second only to the Kingston Trio in its popularity during the peak years of the American urban folk music boom of the late 1950s and early ’60s.

After becoming a hit act at San Francisco’s fabled hungry i nightclub only two months after their formation in 1959, the Limeliters became an inescapable presence in mass media. They recorded 13 albums, appeared on television and toured as many as 310 days out of the year. Their most enduring album, “Through Children’s Eyes,” was popular among generations of children and their parents.

Hassilev’s powerful chops on banjo and guitar gave the group’s music much of its rhythmic drive, and his expertise in foreign languages — particularly in French, Portuguese and Russian — made it possible to add songs from outside American folk music to the group’s repertoire. Tall, debonair and handsome, Hassilev also was the sex symbol of the trio.

Dickey Betts of The Allman Brothers Band

Dickey Betts, guitarist and founding member of the Allman Brothers Band, dies 80

Dickey Betts, a founding member and guitarist for the Allman Brothers Band, died Thursday of cancer and COPD, his family announced. The musician was 80.

Hassilev was born in Paris on July 11, 1932, to Russian emigré parents Leonide and Tamara Hassilev. Like his colleagues in the Limeliters, he was an only child — and to one another the three musicians were probably the closest thing to brothers they ever had.

The Hassilevs were Jewish and left Paris for New York City in 1939 ahead of the Nazi occupation of France during World War II, and in Manhattan Leonide Hassilev continued his career as a civil engineer specializing in hydroelectric projects. Hassilev had showed early brilliance as a child, picking up new languages with ease and eventually speaking six fluently. When he came to America, he found that he was ahead of his classmates.

“I breezed through school, except that I was lousy at shop,” he said in one of the interviews that eventually resulted in my recent biography of the band’s core trio, “Makin’ a Joyful Noise: The Lives and Times of the (Slightly) Fabulous Limeliters.” “I was good at everything in those days because I had this tremendous background from my European days, where they teach at a higher level.”

Hassilev’s musical background was mainly in the classical field, although he knew some Russian folk songs that his parents brought over as well as some Brazilian and French songs. He said that he didn’t discover American folk music until his early 20s, when he was stationed in England after being drafted into the Army.

A chance listening to the Weavers’ recording of “Kisses Sweeter Than Wine” on the radio electrified him.

“I thought, goddamn, that’s the greatest thing I ever heard, and it made such an impression on me that it kindled my interest in American folk music,” he said during an interview in 1989. “At the time, I didn’t know any songs in English.”

The best songs from Taylor Swift’s ‘Tortured Poets Department’ double album

Taylor Swift released the 16-track “Tortured Poets Department” at the stroke of midnight on Friday — and surprised fans with 15 more songs two hours later. Here are the best songs from the double album.

April 19, 2024

Hassilev attended Harvard for a year but, dissatisfied with the Ivy League atmosphere, he transferred to the University of Chicago with the idea of going into the diplomatic corps. The lure of the theater eventually won out, and he enrolled at New York’s Neighborhood Playhouse, where he studied with Sanford Meisner and Martha Graham . Upon graduation, he looked for work as an actor while participating in the folk music scene in Greenwich Village, where he met Yarbrough at a party.

Eventually, Yarbrough asked Hassilev to join him as a co-owner and performer at an Aspen, Colo., nightclub called the Limelite, forming a trio with singer-actor Marilyn Child. The two men also sang together at a small club in Hollywood called the Cosmo Alley , and it was there in 1959 that Gottlieb — then trying to sell arrangements to the Kingston Trio — heard and liked their sound.

At first Gottlieb simply wanted them to help him make demo tapes for the Kingstons to learn songs, but Hassilev and Yarbrough countered with an offer to work up an act of their own. Gottlieb agreed and got hungry i owner Enrico Banducci to offer the new trio of Gottlieb, Hassilev and Yarbrough a gig there, sight unseen and unheard.

Banducci’s gamble paid off big-time. Within days after their opening, the Limeliters were selling out the club and were besieged with offers from major record companies eager to cash in on the folk boom. After making a modestly selling album for Elektra, the group signed with RCA Victor. Their first RCA album, “Tonight: In Person,” recorded live at the Ash Grove in Los Angeles, rose to No. 5 on the charts. Commercials for Folger’s coffee, L&M cigarettes, Ford Motor Co. and Coca-Cola followed, which irked folk purists but gave the group immense exposure.

The three Limeliters were an intelligent and volatile set of personalities armed with formidable debating skills, and they regularly argued about repertoire, money and even the clothes they wore onstage.

“They were breaking up every day they were in existence,” their then-manager Ken Kragen recalled. Their touring schedule increased the tensions, and a December 1962 plane crash near Provo, Utah — from which they were lucky to survive with only minor injuries — contributed to their first breakup. Yarbrough left the group in July 1963 to go solo; Hassilev and Gottlieb continued for two years as a recording act to fulfill their RCA Victor contract, with Ernie Sheldon replacing Yarbrough.

Uncertain as to what to do next, Hassilev tried a solo singing career but gave up after two unsuccessful albums and an aborted nightclub gig. He turned to acting, landing a prominent role as a Russian-speaking sailor in the Norman Jewison Cold War comedy “The Russians Are Coming the Russians Are Coming,” as well as a guest shot on TV’s “Get Smart.” He became interested in producing records, founding an early home recording studio that at its peak operated around the clock in his basement in West Hollywood, near the Sunset Strip.

His studio was one of the first to have a Moog synthesizer — well before the Beatles, the Monkees and other pop bands discovered the instrument. He and Mort Garson used the Moog to help create a moderate-sized hit album, “The Zodiac: Cosmic Sounds.” As a producer, Hassilev also managed to get Gottlieb and Yarbrough to record a period-pop-flavored Limeliters reunion album, “Time to Gather Seeds,” in 1968.

Eventually, Hassilev tired of running the studio and wound down his schedule. When the chance came to reunite the Limeliters as a part-time touring act in 1972, Hassilev, who now solely owned the rights to the group’s name, jumped at the chance. The old vocal chemistry was still there; the show drew highly positive reviews and big crowds. But the folk boom had long since deflated, and the Limeliters never could attract the same level of attention from record companies.

Eventually Yarbrough grew restless, leaving the trio in 1977 and returning in 1980, only to depart again after a few months of touring in which the old group tensions arose again. Hassilev, now thoroughly in charge, kept the Limeliters going, replacing Yarbrough with tenors Red Grammer in the 1980s and Rick Dougherty in the 1990s, experimenting with country music before doubling back to their folk base.

When Gottlieb died suddenly in 1996, Hassilev replaced him with Bill Zorn. That edition of the Limeliters lasted until 2002, when Hassilev developed bladder cancer and had to leave the road. When he recovered, a legal dispute blew apart that edition of the trio, but Hassilev kept the Limeliters going, teaming up with Andy Corwin and Mack Bailey.

Hassilev retired in 2006, leaving the leadership of the touring Limeliters to Corwin while still owning the group’s name. Under Corwin, the Limeliters, with various changes in personnel, remain active to this day.

In retirement, Hassilev moved from West Hollywood to North Hollywood, where he spent hours and hours editing and resequencing prospective albums of his work alone and with the trio, as well as doting upon his five dogs. Though increasingly physically immobile in his last decade, Hassilev remained sharp mentally, growing conservative in his politics and ready to debate his liberal friends. Even at 90, he could dominate a room with his bass-baritone voice and a warmth that could smooth over tension.

Hassilev’s survivors include his second wife, Gladys; his son from his first marriage to Ginger Stagner, David; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
