The historic little town of St. Marys is located close to Topeka, where it welcomes day trippers to come and enjoy some great outdoor recreation. Things to Do on the Niangua River:

Your family can canoe, kayak, float in inner tubes, or raft down the Niangua River! This fun road trip near Lake of the Ozarks is great if your family loves the outdoors or is looking for an adventure. 

There are many fun campgrounds, cabins, & hotels in the area, so it will definitely make a fun weekend trip. Explore the many campsites & rentals available like the Floating R or NRO , which has free camping options available. Big Bear River Resort offers adorable cabins, canoes, camping & great fishing spots too!

Food on the Niangua River:

Depending on where you start your float trip, you can stop at The Gravel Bar & Grill at the Sand Springs Resort .

This restaurant is right off the river, so you can walk from your canoe. It has basic American food, offering something for everyone in your family. They also offer lodging at the resort, so if you are looking for a place to stay and rent your canoes, this might be the spot!

This day trip location is a little further away, so you may want to stay overnight – especially if you spend all day paddling on the river! These are just one of many great options:

> Tanganyika Wildlife Park

Tanganyika Wildlife Park is one of the most unique day trips from Kansas City. Not sure if it would be a day trip, since it is 3 hours, but could be a great weekend getaway in Kansas!  

It is a family-owned zoo with one of the largest animal collections in the state. There are over 40 exhibits, including several interactive stations for your kids to learn.

This is definitely a trip stop to add to your list.  

Tanganyika is the only place in the US where you can interact with ring-tail lemurs in their island habitat and feed Indian rhinos and pygmy hippos.

From most of the reviews that I read, it is a great place for younger kids —more animals in a smaller area to save their little legs (and grandparents too!)

There and back will be about 6 hours in total, so consider finding a place to stay for the night:

> Northwest Arkansas

Rogers, Fayetteville, Springdale

(3 hours, 15 minutes) If your family loves the outdoors, this is a great weekend getaway with your kids! 

Things to Do in NW Arkansas:

There are tons of great family things to do in Northwest Arkansas…not to mention the scenery! You can camp along the river, swim in the clear water, & have quality family time on your family’s vacation. Don’t forget to try canoeing while you are on the river!

There is the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks , Charlie & Willie George Park which features a fun spray park for the kids to cool off & TONS of great hiking. There are also unique things to do in NW Arkansas like, exploring the Dickson Street Bookshop or taking in a local museum.

You can visit the Museum of Native American History , Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art , or the Museum of Discovery – a fantastic kids’ activity! Last but certainly not least, you have to check out the Walmart Museum.

The Roaring River State Park is a great day trip from Kansas City when the weather is warm. You can also make it an overnight trip with camping if it’s a little further for you (Depending on what part of town you’re in) .

Things to Do in Roaring River:

There is so much nature to explore – it could fill your entire weekend! Trout fishing is obviously its biggest draw but there are great things to do and see for the whole family.  

The park is one of the premier trout fisheries in the nation and is stocked each night. There are also 7 trails that lead through the hills, including the Deer Leap trail that overlooks the fish hatchery. There are options to camp as well, including renting a cabin for the weekend.

> Eureka Springs, AR

(3 hours and 50 minutes)

Eureka Springs prides itself on its fabulous festivals. 

I personally love the St. Patrick’s Day celebration and have participated many times, but there are several more throughout the summer—just check to make sure they would be fun for the kids! It is the perfect place for a day or weekend trip from Kansas City!

Things to Do in Eureka Springs, AR:

The city itself is nestled in the Arkansas hills and has great hiking & outdoor adventures.

Check out Lake Leatherwood for hiking, fishing, canoeing & more outdoor activities.

Downtown Eureka Springs is also a great stop; filled with shopping, restaurants & historic character. There are tons of eccentric shops and art galleries to explore too. You can always find good music in many areas of the city, especially during Blues Weekend.

Best Food in Eureka Springs:

Parkside Pretzel & Snack Bar has everything pretzel – pretzel dogs, pretzel churros…use your imagination! Their reviews are stellar & also feature some healthy options. Eureka Springs Funnel Cake Factory also needs to be on your list. If you’re looking for more dinner food, check out the Rockin’ Pig Saloon for yummy ribs & burgers, or Emilio’s Italian Home Cooking . This delicious Italian spot is located inside an old house, with a more upscale feel.   

Plan on staying the night in either The Crescent or The Basin Park Hotel . Both have their share of ghost stories, but their true draw is how they pull you into the vintage feel of the city. I have stayed at both but I don’t think got an ounce of sleep because the lights were always on and I was constantly checking under the bed!

At nearly 4 hours away from the city, you’ll want to stop for a good night’s rest before you head back to KC. Here are some of the closest options:

> Rent a Cabin Near Kansas City

(1-3 hours depending on the cabin)

There are many nice cabins near Kansas City, as well as in the city limits. Whether you’re looking for a staycation or a weekend getaway in the woods, these cabins are always a great idea!

Find large cabins for multiple families, or small cabin sites perfect for a small family trip.

> Branson

(3 hours or less)

Branson is one of the best road trips from Kansas City, because of the windy roads and beautiful scenery. So, start planning a fun weekend getaway.

Things to do in Branson, MO:

There are so many things to do in and around Branson it is mind-blowing; shopping at outlets , dining, amusement parks, go-karts, bumper cars & boats, duck rides, museums, Table Rock State Park has ALL the fun a lake can provide & everything in between!

You could spend a day or two at Silver Dollar City alone. You can grab a coupon book for the outlets too!

Be sure to check out shows like The SIX , Silver Dollar City , and the MASSIVE go-kart tracks! Your family is sure to find kids activities everyone will love.

With Table Rock Lake nearby so you can cool off too. Visit  Table Rock State Park , which has fantastic camping, fishing, boating & great swimming areas! Best Food in Branson, MO:

On your drive down, stop at Lambert’s , “home of the throwed rolls” in Ozark, MO. It is home cooking at its finest…while they throw rolls at you to eat! Cakes & Cream is one of our family’s favorites. It is a 50’s diner with more desserts than you could imagine. You can get many old classics there.

For the best shakes & homemade pies in town, stop at Billy Bob’s Dairyland . They feature tasty treats as well as yummy burgers & other diner food. (They also have amazing service…)

Branson offers tons of hotels and resorts , but there are also some gems through Airbnb that offer more privacy for families. There are beautifully redone farmhouses , modern cabins and log cabins available too!

> Amana Colonies Weekend Trip

(4 hours, 29 minutes) While this is longer than the 3-hour trips from Kansas City, the Amana Colonies have something for everyone. Plus, if you are looking for a weekend trip, going further away from home may be fun!

Things to Do at Amana Colonies:

The colonies host events each weekend, from a dog speed racers competition to woodworking festivals, so there is always something to do.

They celebrate a rich heritage in arts and crafts and take visitors away from the hustle and bustle of busy life…check it out for your next weekend trip out of KC.

In fact, The Wurst Festival , a celebration of all things sausage , was named the Best New Event of 2015 by the Iowa Tourism Commission.

There are many places to stay camping, bed, and breakfasts, and hotels nearby.

Best Food in Amana Colonies:

If you like German-American food, try the Ox Yoke Inn for fresh, handmade food. The restaurant dates back to the 1940s, so there are definitely delicious reasons it is still in business. Or, head to the Ronneburg Restaurant for another take on German cooking. Both restaurants are highly rated.

Even though Topeka is our state capital, most people haven’t explored it even though it is one of the best day trips from Kansas City! With Topeka less than an hour from most places in KC, it is a cheap getaway from Kansas City.

Things to do in Topeka, KS:

You can even climb to the TOP of the state capitol building , which we definitely recommend during your day trip. Tour reservations are not needed for groups of 10 or smaller. The spiral staircase winds right up the middle of the capitol dome, so don’t look down!

Best Food in Topeka, KS :

Bobo’s Diner is a Topeka classic – handmade onion rings, fries & burgers! They were featured on Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives, so you know it’s delicious.

If Mexican is your fam’s jam, El Centenario makes homemade dishes every day. If the kiddos are all in on awesome grilled cheese sandwiches. and mom & dad like craft beer, The Wheel Barrel is a must. They’re located in the NOTO Arts District and are famous for their gourmet grilled cheese & selection of craft beers. You can’t go wrong with anything on your list. 

If you decide to make a weekend of it, there are some family-friendly spots to stay:

> Roadtrip to Des Moines, IA

(2.5 hours – 3 hours)

While Des Moines isn’t the most attractive city to visit, there are tons of things to do with kids in Des Moines. Plus, the drive is manageable for a weekend trip or getaway.

Explore Adventureland Themepark , which includes an outdoor waterpark, a theme park, and indoor pools. Or, your family can check out the Science Center of Iowa , where learning is brought to life.

Don’t miss Iowa’s wildest adventure at  Blank Park Zoo  or find fun things to do outside like Gray’s Lake Park, the Living History Farms , or the Iowa State Fairgrounds (if you can make the trip during the Iowa State Fair ).

There’s also the State Capitol Building you can tour and the downtown Des Moines farmer’s market – rated the 2nd best farmer’s market in America

There are fun kids’ activities here that make learning fun! There are also areas with tons of room to play, like Pappajohn Sculpture Park or the Des Moines Botanical Gardens . The sculpture park is a great place for kids to play while enjoying the artwork…plus it’s free!

You can also enjoy some yummy ice cream at Black Cat Ice Cream , just across the street from the sculpture park.

> Wichita, Kansas Day Trip

(3 hours, 20 minutes)

Things to do in Wichita, KS:

Wichita is home to the Museum of World Treasures , which has an extensive World War II collection as well as shrunken heads, dinosaurs, ancient Egyptians, and everything in between.

The Exploration Place , a science education center, is also filled with fun kids’ activities and things to do. Your kids will explore a variety of hands-on activities & exhibits…think of it as the Science City of Wichita. Check out the Exploration Place calendar of events to see what’s happening while you are there.  

There is also the Sedgwick County Zoo , the Botanical Gardens of Wichita , and the Cowtown Museum , which has FREE admission on Sundays from noon to 5 pm. Also, be sure to visit the Keeper of the Plains statue !

If you’re into history, this is a small town worth visiting. The Dalton Gang Hideout was the home of Eva Whipple, the sister of the Dalton Gang outlaw group. A hidden tunnel was discovered to hide the gang members.

It’s now considered a Kansas tourist attraction, where you can tour the home and the tunnel (reconstructed version). There is also a historical museum!

In addition to the history, there is a beautiful state park – Meade State Park . There is a 360-acre area filled with wildlife, as well as campsites and a lake.

You can camp or fish at the lake with your family to enjoy the great outdoors!

> St. Louis Road Trip

(3 to 3 and a half hours)

Depending on where you are road-tripping from in Kansas City, St. Louis isn’t that far. There are too many things to do with kids in St. Louis for just one day, so make a weekend road trip out of the day trip!

Things to Do in St. Louis:

You can explore the St. Louis Gateway Arch , World Bird Sanctuary , St. Louis Aquarium (the perfect place for kids), Magic House Children’s Museum , and many other kids’ activities. Take a stroll through the Missouri Botanical Gardens, which features a beautiful Japanese garden.

Crown Candy is definitely worth a visit. This is a century-old Soda Fountain restaurant that is a St. Louis classic. You will feel like you stepped back in time to 1913 as soon as you step in their doors.

After you try their candy, ice cream & delicious food…it’s game over. Their hearty BLT is stacked to the brim (overflowing really…) with yummy bacon! There are also some delicious donuts at O’Fashion Donuts . Head to The Hill and enjoy some great Italian food at the many restaurants located there.

> Roadtrip to Joplin

(2 hours, 30 minutes)

Things to Do in Joplin, MO:

There are tons of fun things to do in Joplin during your day trip from KC! You can visit a giant waterfall – Grand Falls , George Washington Carver National Monumen t , or walk around downtown Joplin . The Sunshine Lamp District is even named after Joplin’s booming mining days, so you’ll be trendy while walking through history!

There are cute stores to shop, yummy restaurants to try, & even an indoor adventure playground for the kiddos. You can also visit the winery if it’s more of an adult-only road trip! 

Best Food in Joplin:

If BBQ is your thing, you can’t miss Big R’s BBQ & Pies . The locals love this spot for its great BBQ and you can finish off with one of their great pies, so you don’t want to skip this spot!

The Red Onion Cafe is located in a 100-year-old building & highly rated across the board. They serve American food in a relaxed setting – be sure to try the Smoked Chicken Dip! 

> Columbia, MO

(2 hours, 10 minutes)  

Things to Do in Columbia, MO:  

At MU, you can visit the Museum of Art & Archaeology or the Francis Quadrangle , with giant pillars towering overhead. Or, check out the Columbia Art League in downtown Columbia.  Besides visiting The University of Missouri, there are other fun things to do with kids like nature parks.

If your family likes the outdoors, there are many great parks & hiking trails like Rock Bridge Memorial State Park , Finger Lakes State Park , Stephens Lake Beach & Park , or Capen Park .

Finger Lakes State Park is probably the most unique thing you can do, with trails for ATVs, motorbiking, & four-wheelers. There is also a lake where you can go scuba diving, swimming, fishing & non-motorized boating. You can rent kayaks & canoes at the park, so all you have to bring is your family!  

Also visit the Shelter Gardens , a 5-acre botanical garden that is perfect to take a stroll…  

Best Food in Columbia, MO:  

If you’re looking for healthy options, try the Main Squeeze Natural Foods Cafe , which is rated very highly.  If you’re in the mood for good-old deliciousness, try Just Jeff’s Street Food , they have two locations.

They supposedly have the best chili dogs in all of Columbia. Addison’s is also a yummy place to try. Their nachos are our favorite!  You can’t go wrong by stopping for a pizza at Shakespeare’s Pizza, a Columbia tradition since 1973 with 3 locations.

> Eagles Bluff Conservation Area

If you’re looking to get away from the city…this is the place for you. There are miles and miles of nature to be explored – the perfect place for a nature weekend getaway. Plus, the shorter drives make this one of our favorite day trips from Kansas City…  

There is the Katy Trail State Park , which provides trails to bike, hike, or even ride horses! You can also explore other regions of the conservation area with fishing, hiking trails, camping, bird watching & other fun outdoor activities. 

> Rock City

About 20 miles away from Salina, there are giant spherical rocks, formed when Kansas was under an ocean. There are over 200 rocks you can explore!   You have a couple of options.

1. Rock City is the larger of the 2 attractions, with close to 200 rock formations, but costs $3.

2. Mushroom Rock State Park , which is smaller, is free to the public. If your children love to run around or climb on things, this is a fun place to explore. Check out the website to see cool pictures of mushroom rocks !     

> Go on a Safari

Looking for more unique day trips from Kansas City? This safari is just minutes away from Springfield, MO. (See our Springfield Guide below). How about a wildlife excursion…it’s a drive-thru animal safari in the middle of Missouri! There are over 450 animals for your family to come to visit. 

While there is not a ton to do, the Safari is definitely a unique experience that makes it worth the day trip drive from Kansas City. Make it a short getaway with an overnight stay for the family all together!

> Atchison, KS

Because Amelia Earhart was born in Atchison, you can learn about her at the Amelia Earhart Museum , at her birthplace. Also, visit the Atchison County Historical Society Museum located in the historic 1880 Santa Fe Depot. Check out the Atchison Rail Museum .

If you want to enjoy the outdoors, hang out at Jackson Park or cross the Missouri River and visit the Lewis & Clark State Park . 

Where to eat:

Grab a sandwich at one of these yummy stops: Mr. G’s , JW Boy’s BBQ , or Willie’s Sports Pub . You can’t go wrong.

> Springfield, MO

Things to Do:

Shop the original, and one of the largest, Bass Pro Shops ! Explore the incredible caves of the Ozarks or go on a safari at The Wild Animal Safari in nearby Stafford, MO.

Find your favorite style of cashew chicken at one of these places on the official Cashew Chicken Trail.

Step back in time on Route 66 and grab a burger at Red’s Giant Hamburg or eat at a classic diner like Casper’s .

Six Awesome Day Trips: Kansas

Though Kansas is sometimes referred to as one of the “fly over states,” each of the travel regions has amazing points of interest and a wide range of outdoor activities for everyone to enjoy. For decades thousands of people migrated across the Sunflower State on the California, Oregon, and Santa Fe Trails. The famous Lewis & Clark Expedition, Pony Express Mail Service, and the Chisholm Trail are all part of Kansas’ captivating past. Today, a trip through Kansas will uncover its Native American roots, cowboy culture, European influences, aviation history, and, of course, the location of one of America’s most-loved movies— The Wizard of Oz. Our day trip recommendations start from Wichita and highlight some of the state’s amazing things to do.

Here are six great day trip destinations across the Sunflower State:

Abilene (Museums & Attractions)

Located 95 miles north of Wichita, Abilene is famous for being the hometown of the 34th President of the United States. This day trip takes you to the Eisenhower Presidential Library, Museum, and Boyhood Home . Begin your visit with the 23-minute orientation film and then explore the museum’s first floor, which includes 25,000-square-feet of new interactive exhibits. Before leaving the main building to see other sites on the 22-acre campus, reserve a time slot for a tour of Eisenhower’s Boyhood Home- sure to be one of the highlights of your day. For those of you taking a road trip through Kansas, Eisenhower’s 62-day road trip that was inspiration for the creation of the U.S. Interstate Highway System might peak your interest. If you have a little extra time, historic downtown Abilene is worth a stop, as well as the Dickinson County Heritage Center History Museum to ride on the oldest operational C.W. Parker Carousel in the country.

Dodge City (Tours & Experiences)

The famous wild west town of Dodge City , once nicknamed the “Queen of Cowtowns”, is located about 155 miles west of Wichita. Spend the day walking in the footsteps of Bat Masterson and Wyatt Earp and visit the historical sites, museums, and landmarks related to Dodge City’s Old West heritage. Our day trip recommendation is the Boot Hill Museum on the original site of Boot Hill Cemetery. The museum’s collection features over 60,000 historic items. While strolling along Front Street, have a cold sarsaparilla at the Long Branch Saloon and watch a performance by the World Famous Gunslingers. Extend your day trip into the evening and attend the nightly Long Branch Variety Show followed by a country style dinner served in the Occident Saloon.

Hutchinson (Museums & Attractions)

“Hutch” , located 55 miles northwest of Wichita, is home to a few of the best day trip attractions in Kansas. For aviation and space enthusiasts, the Cosmosphere (a Smithsonian-affiliate) is a must-see, with over 13,000 spaceflight artifacts. The collection is the largest combined collection of U.S. and Russian spaceflight artifacts in the world. The museum does an excellent job outlining significant space achievements through timelines, stories, and related exhibits. A few of the collection highlights include spacecraft from early manned U.S. space programs: the Mercury capsule Liberty Bell 7, the Gemini X, and the Apollo 13. It’s possible to spend an entire day at the Cosmosphere, but if you have time after you visit the museum, take a tour of Strataca, Kansas Underground Salt Museum . This is your chance to journey 650 feet below the surface into the dimly lit tunnels of a salt mine or board the Salt Mine Express and venture into a portion of the salt mine where everything was left exactly as it was over 50 years ago. Before leaving Hutchinson, the downtown area is worth a stop with dozens of unique shops, antique galleries, and cafés.

Lindsborg (Small Town Experience)

Nicknamed “Little Sweden, USA,” Lindsborg features a beautiful downtown lined with small retail shops, restaurants, coffee shops, and galleries. Our day trip to Lindsborg focuses on Swedish heritage: exploring the historic sites, unique museums, and charming downtown. Visit the Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery to see prints, drawings and watercolors by Swedish-born artist Sandzén. While looking for the perfect gift among the downtown shops and galleries, stop in Hemslöjd Swedish Gifts and watch the craftsmen and local folk artists at work. The gift shop overflows with traditional, unusual, and practical Swedish gifts, crafts, housewares, and more. Curb your appetite at the Swedish Crown Restaurant , a unique twist on traditional Swedish and American cuisine. Time your visit to Lindsborg with one of the many annual events and festivals. There are more than a dozen events to choose from— Våffeldagen (International Waffle Day) in the Spring and a series of events that take place during the Christmas in Lindsborg celebration are very popular.

Strong City  (The Outdoors)  

Located  about  80  miles  northeast  of  Wichita  is the  Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve , home to over 700 varieties of plants, 300 birds ,  and 80 mammals.  The preserve protects a small  portion  of the once vast tallgrass prairie ecosystem.  Today, v isitors can experience the wide-open prairie and the patches of forest by  driving the  15-mile  scenic  bison loop and hiking along  old gravel ranch roads and mowed paths .   From April to October guided prairie bus tours   leave from the  visitor center and  travel  through the historic ranch site,  across  the bison pasture, and to the prairie overlook area,  providing  information about the flora, fauna, and cultural history of the prairie .  

Wamego (Museums & Attractions)

The iconic   Oz Museum is located in downtown Wamego, about 150 miles north of Wichita. The museum has a collection that includes over 2,000 artifacts and is a tribute to all things “Oz.” Follow the yellow brick road and see comprehensive exhibits of the 4 main characters – Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion. There’s a lot to see and learn at this uniquely American museum and the magical world created by L. Frank Baum. Don’t forget your camera, great picture opportunities abound and the gift shop with unique items to remember your visit.

Kansas Off the Beaten Path

Kansas has a rich history for visitors to explore, including these many unusual and off-the-beaten-path attractions.

Historic Landmarks

Vieux (Vermillion) Crossing – Several westward-bound trails used by settlers once ran through northeastern Kansas. The historic toll bridge and homestead built by the Vieux family is gone, but the family cemetery remains. You can also find remnants of an ancient elm tree.

Route 66  –  The legendary route passed through Kansas for only 13 miles. However, Route 66 fanciers tend to agree this short stretch is one of the best-preserved on the entire highway.

Monument Rocks and Castle Rock   –  These ancient chalk bed formations rise starkly from the prairie of western Kansas. They have yielded fossil finds dating to the Cretaceous period, about 80 million years ago. Generations of nomadic Plains tribes and later-arriving Europeans used these formations as navigational landmarks. They are located on private land with dirt roads, but the owners have long allowed public access.

Weird and Curious

Big Brutus  –  In the 1960s coal was big business in Kansas. Big Brutus and its giant scoop (large enough to fill three railroad cars) played an important role in the industry. Now it is one of Kansas’ largest curiosities; it was too expensive to move.

Mushroom Rocks State Park – Kansas’ smallest state park (5 acres) is a peaceful and rarely visited spot on the prairie. It contains a number of mushroom-shaped concretions: sandstone and sedimentary rock held together by natural concrete.

Great Photo Ops

Post Rock Scenic Byway – Located just a few miles from the all-too-familiar boredom of I-70, the 18-mile route cuts through an area of limestone outcroppings past the sandstone bluffs of Lake Wilson. The Post Rock Scenic Byway was one of the finalists for the selection as one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas Geography.

Waterfalls at Chase State Fishing Lake – These waterfalls are so off-the-beaten-path that many locals don’t even know they exist.

Other interesting off-the-beaten-path places in Kansas include Big Basin, Rock City, Alcove Spring, a Dutch-style Windmill at Smith Center, Clements Stone Bridge, Pillsbury Crossing, the Cimarron National Grasslands and many other lesser-known places in Wichita.

Wichita is the largest city in the state of Kansas and sits at the junction of the area’s Little and Big Arkansas Rivers. Wichita’s history dates back to the mid-19th century. This city has an impressive blend of history and nature and caters to those who are on the hunt for an authentic cultural experience.

There are numerous unique landmarks, national parks, and contemporary museums in Wichita. With so many attractions within this vibrant city, many tourists miss out on what’s going on outside of Wichita. Getting out of the city for a day trip is not that hard; if you enjoy hitting the road with some great company and good music, then this one is for you.

1. Haysville

Haysville is a suburb of Wichita which is usually referred to as the Peach Capital of Kansas. Its historic district has quite the story to tell. Back in 1876, the first school was built in Haysville; in 1919, the Haysville State Bank was built. However, in May 1999, a tornado hit Haysville and damaged the structures in the area. The only thing that remained standing on the eastern side is the bank’s vault.

Here, you will find the “Rock Island” – a railroad that goes from Herington through Haysville and merges with the Union Pacific Railroad, Oklahoma-Kansa-Texas Railroad, and the Missouri Pacific Railroad.

2. Junction City

This city got its name from its strategic position at the confluence of the Republican and the Smoky Hill rivers. Junction City is surrounded by history, adventure, and has a bright future.

Junction City is an ethically-diversified community with friendly residents and offers plenty of rural and small-town pleasures. Generally, the town’s atmosphere is inviting, making it an ideal destination for a day trip from Wichita.

Originally named Junction City, it was later known as Millard City – from 3rd October 1855 – and later renamed Humboldt in 1857. A year later, the local farmers renamed it to Junction City and the city was fully incorporated in 1859.

On your day trip, drop by the Heritage Park to explore the Vietnam Memorial, the Civil War Arch, and the Law Enforcement Memorial.

3. Mushroom Rock State Park

This small state park is located in the Smoky Hills region and characterized by captivating rock formations that are known as ‘hoodoos.’

The rock formations resemble mushrooms; they came about as a result of uneven weathering and erosion. During the process, the hard mass that forms the capstone resisted the weathering, while the underlying soft rocks were eroded. Mushroom Rock State Park has been labeled one of the “Eight Wonders of Kansas.”

Native Americans not only used the rocks as landmarks but also as meeting places. This is evidenced by the graffiti on some of the rocks that date several generations back.

The five-acre park is managed by Kanopolis State Park and is the smallest park in Kansas.

4. Independence

This city is located in Montgomery County, Southeastern Kansas, and was named in commemoration of the Declaration of Independence. It’s located along the Verdigris River and covers an area of 20.07 square kilometers.

Independence is a delightful small downtown that has a rustic, rural charm. The town has a humid subtropical climate that is characterized by hot summers and chilly winters.

Before September 1869, Independence belonged to the Osage Indians and was originally named Cofax.

5. Cedar Point Mill

Drinkwater & Schriver Mill in Cedar Point stands by a stone dam in the Cottonwood River. The mill is a former sawmill and has been a landmark since 1857. The mill’s primary function was sawing lumber. Unfortunately, the wooden mill was washed away in a flood in 1871. A new mill was constructed that same year from hand-cut native limestone.

Today, both the river and mill are reminders of pioneer America. The mill is located in Cedar Point, a scenic city that covers a total area of 0.21 kilometers squared.

The mill is under the management of a Kansas non-profit corporation that is renovating it with the aim of maintaining it and saving it as a historical site to attract more visitors in the future.

6. Winfield

This city is situated along the Walnut River in Cowley County in South Central Kansas. Winfield is the most populous city in the county.

Winfield was founded in 1870. The city got its name from a reverend who promised to build a town church in exchange for the town’s naming rights. Winfield was incorporated as a city in 1873.

The Winfield area is well known for the manufacture of aircraft and aircraft parts. The city is home to the Southwest College and also renown for hosting the Walnut Valley Festival and the Winfield Country Roundup.

Emporia is 140 kilometers away from Wichita. It sits in the Flint Hills region of Lyon County, Kansas. The city was founded in 1857 and is located between Wichita and Topeka. In 1869, the first railroad was extended to Emporia.

This college town is home to the Flint Hills Technical College and the Emporia State University.

Emporia is a great place to go for a day trip from Wichita, thanks to numerous structures listed under the National Register of Historic Places. They include the Old Emporia Public Library, the Granada Theatre, the Finney House, the Mason House, and the Kress Building.

8. Monument Rocks National Natural Landmark

The Monument Rocks are also referred to as the Chalk Pyramids; they’re among the Eight Wonders of Kansas. They go up to a height of 21 meters and were among the first landmarks in the state to be designated as a natural landmark.

The rock formations are estimated to have been created more than 80 million years ago and include formations such as arches and buttes.

Monument Rocks National Natural Landmark lies on a private piece of land but the landowner is amenable to visitors – no special permission is required.

In one of the monuments, there is a huge gap – often referred to as the “keyhole” – which offers a perfect window to see the sun as it sets. Nearby, there is the Keystone Gallery, home to fossils, art, and other souvenirs that are for sale.

In addition to the area’s geology, Monument Rocks has cavities that offer a habitat for wildlife such as pigeons and falcons.

This city is located in Sedgwick County. Derby is the largest suburb of Wichita and was originally known as El Paso from 1903. The city name was officially changed to Derby in 1956.

Some highlights of a day trip to Derby are the Rock River Rapids and the Derby Historical Museum.

In the 1920’s, when the aviation industry started flourishing, an Air Force Base was established between Wichita and Derby. This was in order to meet the rising demand for more airplanes to be used in the Cold War. Most of the workers set up their homes in this town that remained largely rural until after WWII.

10. Andover

Andover was established in 1877. When Kansas was mapped, this territory was initially referred to as Minneha. This city was later renamed as Cloud City after Mr. Cloud, a railroad engineer.

On 7th June 1880, the town’s name was changed to Andover after the engineer had a misunderstanding with the area residents. They named the city after Andover, Massachusetts.

Andover is located in Butler County. The city has two parks – the Andover Park and the Andover Central Park – that you ought to explore on your day trip from Wichita.

11. El Dorado

The city of El Dorado is located along the Walnut River in Butler County, southern-central Kansas. The city’s name means “the golden one” in Spanish. The Spanish Empire used “El Hombre Dorado” to describe a mythical chief who covered himself with gold dust and then submerged himself in the Guatavita Lake, as part of an initiation rite.

El Dorado is headquarters of the Arkansas Oil and Gas Commission and is well known as being in the center of Southern Arkansas’ oil boom in the 1920’s. For this reason, it got the nickname “Arkansas Original Boomtown.”

12. Hutchinson

This city is located on the Arkansas River and is the largest in Reno County. The locals refer to it as Hutch. Since 1887, Hutchinson has been home to salt mines – it is for this reason that the city got its “Salt City” nickname.

The city of Hutchinson was founded in 1871 and is located 63 kilometers to the northwest of Wichita. The city’s nickname is “Temperance City” – that came about after the prohibition of alcohol in August 1872 by Clinton Hutchinson, the founder.

13. Arkansas City

This city is located at the point where Arkansas and Walnut Rivers meet. For the sake of brevity, the residents usually refer to the city as Ark City. This is for the purpose of minimizing confusion with the nearby state of Arkansas. These two names have, over the years, caused much confusion among the locals.

Arkansas City was established in the late 1860’s; the territory was initially referred to as “Nichonka” which means “place between the waters.”

Arkansas City is now home to the Arkansas River Path, which is a scenic walkway that allows you to see downtown Wichita as you take a stroll along the 3.6-mile path.

This city is located in Harvey County, 40 kilometers north of Wichita.

A highlight of the day trip to Newton City is the Kauffman Museum. This historical museum is dedicated to preserving information about the Mennonite settlement on the North American plains.

The museum is home to regional flora and fauna and a large collection of local historical artifacts. On the property, you will also find a restored farmhouse, a windmill, and a barn.

This city is located in Saline County, Kansas. Salina city is located in one of the largest wheat-producing areas in the world. The city is home to multiple colleges and remains a regional trade center for north-central Kansas.

Salina was founded in 1858 by the residents – led by lawyer and journalist, William Phillips – and became incorporated as a city in 1870. The town’s rapid growth can be attributed to the arrival of the Kansas Pacific Railway in 1867.

Wichita, Kansas’s largest city, offers terrific dining, shopping, cultural, and recreational activities. Every time I visit Wichita , the city opens more of its treasures , and I am always reluctant to depart. But an entire state awaits discovery beyond its largest city. 

Here are nine Kansas cities to explore. We enjoy them because of their attractions, dining, and character.

I’ve visited several of these communities on press trips. However, all opinions are my own.

1. Eat Your Way Along Kansas City’s Food Trails

The Kansas Turnpike runs from Wichita to Kansas City , Kansas, nicknamed KCK . The drive requires a bit under three hours. Make sure you arrive hungry because a parade of dining delights lies ahead. Kansas City is famous for its barbecue, and SLAP’s BBQ leads the parade. The restaurant’s name stands for Squeal Like A Pig. Come on Tuesdays for Burnt End Tacos. 

Save room for the KCK Taco Trail , nearly 50 taquerias serving every type of taco. Sign up to earn prizes. We loved El Camino Real , which continually turns the meat on a spit. A pineapple spins above the meat, adding flavor and moisture. They make fresh tortillas for every order.

Village West includes excellent shopping at Legends Outlets , where shops and food abound. Sports fans will enjoy Sporting KC games and races at Kansas Speedway . Stay in the Chateau Avalon’s themed suites.

Pro Tip : Some of the taco trail’s prizes come from Spicin Foods . The factory produces its signature lines, plus private-label products. Visit their outlet for deep discounts.

2. Explore Top-Notch Museums And The State Fair In Hutchinson

Hutchinson is only an hour northwest of Wichita on Highway 96, but the short drive will guide you to the heights of the cosmos and the depths of the earth.

The Cosmosphere started with a planetarium show in a Kansas State Fairgrounds building. From that small beginning, the museum has grown to include the most extensive combined collection of American and Soviet aircraft. It’s the only Midwestern museum to hold spacecraft from the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo space programs. Don’t miss the Justice Planetarium and movies in the digital dome theater. If you enjoy things that go boom, you’ll love Dr. Goddard’s Lab.

Explore the earth’s depths at Strataca , the Kansas Underground Salt Museum. You’ll never look at salt the same after Strataca. The hoist carries visitors 650 feet down into a salt mine, where the faint smell of salt surrounds visitors. Train rides convey guests around the mine. The 30-minute Dark Ride explains the mine’s safety challenges. The guides tell fascinating stories, and you can choose a free chunk of salt. My piece sits on my desk, and I often rub my fingers over it while writing.

UV&S stores numerous companies’ archives in the mine. Look for the movie display, where we saw the machine Dorothy from the movie Twister . Two hours later, we evaded tornadoes around Dodge City.

Pro Tip : In the summer, bring a jacket to lessen the shocking disparity between the mine’s temperature and the intense Kansas heat.

Every September, celebrate Kansas at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson.

Stop at Yoder Meats southeast of Hutchinson on Highway 96 for delicious meats, cheeses, baked goods, and pickles. At Carriage Crossing Restaurant , savor a hickory-smoked ham with sides, followed by a slice of their divine pies. 

3. Take The Road To Wamego, The Emerald City Of Oz

We grew up watching The Wizard of Oz on television each year. Relive the Oz experience in Wamego, two hours northeast of Wichita. The 9-mile Road to Oz starts at I-70’s Exit 328. In Wamego, find the unmistakable Oz Museum on the west side of Lincoln Ave. The movie runs continually in the museum’s theater, but the collections encompass the entire Oz universe. The Oz Museum is one of 11 Midwest museums that we recommend.

Totos TacOZ is next door. If your stomach is empty, eat the Bust My Buttons burrito. If you manage to eat it all, your buttons will burst. Those who aren’t so hungry should eat a Yellow Brick Burrito. Plan for leftovers. 

Enjoy a wine tasting at The Oz Winery , a block south of the museum. We recommend the Squished Witch, Can’t Find My Way Home, and Wicked Deeds.

Pro Tip : For the entire Oz experience, park on Ash Street, two blocks east of the museum. Eat lunch at The Friendship House , then walk the mural-covered Yellow Brick Road toward the museum. At the road’s west end, take a selfie at the gate.

4. Experience #6740Wonderful In Salina

Salina’s hashtag is #6740wonderful. Drive 1.5 hours north on Interstate 135 to experience Salina’s relaxed lifestyle. A mural on Ad Astra Books & Coffee House ’s north wall celebrates the city’s zip code. After taking a picture in front of the mural, drink Ad Astra’s coffee and buy a Kansas-themed book.

Head 20 minutes west to the Rolling Hills Wildlife Adventure . The attraction has two sections: the zoo and a museum. Your ticket includes both. Watch as the zoo’s animals roam in naturalistic habitats. In the museum, animatronic “humans” tell stories about climates and cultures from the Arctic to the tropics.

Pro Tip : Go to the zoo during the day’s best weather, when the animals are most likely to be outdoors. Visit the museum during uncomfortable weather. Wheelchairs and scooters are for rent, and your dogs can stay in air-conditioned kennels.

5. Ride To Concordia, The Orphan Train Town

At the turn of the last century, numerous children lived desperate lives in Eastern cities. The Children’s Aid Society and the New York Foundling Hospital decided to ship 250,000 children to better lives. Concordia , two hours north of Wichita on Highway 81, preserves their stories. The National Orphan Train Complex and the orphans’ sculptures solidify Concordia’s status as the Orphan Train Town. 

First, examine the 140-foot-long Whole Wall Mural on the Cloud County Museum Annex’s east wall. It’s the longest sculpted brick mural in the United States. See unusual kiddie ride animals inside. Before you leave, make an appointment to tour Camp Concordia.

The Orphan Train Complex tour begins in the former Union Pacific Depot. But the most evocative museum exhibit is a vintage passenger car, which takes visitors back in time. Children hoping for a better life have left their belongings on the train while they’re out meeting potential families. The objects in the car evoke the children’s longings and fears. If your ancestor was an orphan train rider, visit the research center.

The orphans weren’t the only fascinating people to enter Concordia by train. From 1943 to 1945, Camp Concordia held German prisoners of war. Three hundred buildings served 4,000 POWs. Building T-9 contains a small museum. 

Try the Hangover Burger with sour cream and chives fries at Easy G Sports Bar & Grill . Look for the section of the Cloud County Community College T-Birds basketball floor. Play Ms. Pac-Man while drinking a malt at Britt’s Fountain and Gifts .

Pro Tip : The World’s Largest Ball of Sisal Twine is an hour west of Concordia in Cawker City. Contact the caretaker, Linda Clover, to add a piece to the ball.

6. Take A Bite of Manhattan, The Little Apple

The home of Kansas State University, Manhattan , is two hours northeast of Wichita. For the best scenery, enter Manhattan via I-70’s Exit 316.

Dangle your feet from the rocks at Pillsbury Crossing Wildlife Area . At high water, Deep Creek Waterfall is about 60 feet wide and 5 feet tall. Drive through a low water crossing on Pillsbury Crossing Lane and park on the east side. 

Follow the short hiking trail or walk along Deep Creek. I hiked all over the falls with my trekking poles. Be cautious on the wet rocks, but the hint of danger adds exhilaration to the experience. Fish for channel catfish and spotted bass upstream and downstream of the crossing.

Hiking nearby Konza Prairie is my favorite thing to do in Manhattan; it’s one of the state’s best hikes . Download the Nature Trail guide, which includes all three loop trails’ maps. All hikers must exit the preserve before dusk. 

Prepare for occasional steep climbs, uneven footing, and narrow pathways. Bring trekking poles and water. The views make your effort worthwhile. Listen for bird calls and the wind rustling through the grasses. In the spring, wildflowers carpet the hills. Spring also brings cinnamon-colored bison calves.

Follow Pillsbury Drive into Manhattan and look for the boat ramp under the east edge of the Kansas River bridge. Float down the river in your kayak or canoe. Access points are 1.5 and 11.5 river miles east. Check water levels before you go.

Your hikes have taken you through the Flint Hills. Learn more about the region and its tall grasses at the Flint Hills Discovery Center . Treat your palate to wild boar at Wine Dive + Kitchen , then drink a Raspberry Townie beer at Manhattan Brewing Co .

The grounds, located in Harvey County, are open every day from dawn to dusk, or you can go during the week when the visitor center is open. Bring your bike or a picnic blanket and your favorite local snacks for time to reset and enjoy the region.

You could easily spend more than a day exploring all the city of  Hutchinson has to offer. The Cosmosphere space museum has the largest collection of U.S. and Russian space artifacts in the world, including rockets and spacesuits. You can descend 650 feet underground in 90 seconds to Strataca , an underground museum of preserved fossils, tunnels and the oldest living organism on Earth. Spend time outdoors at the Hutchinson Zoo or the Hedrick Exotic Animal Farm . And that only scratches the surface of places to eat, explore and enjoy.

If you choose to extend your day trip, Kanopolis is open for camping, giving you the opportunity to admire the wide-open starscape away from city lights.

Day Trips From Kansas City

In this guide, our Travel Times are estimated using Google Maps with Union Station, in Downtown Kansas City, as our starting point. Your Travel Time may vary depending on the day and time your choose to travel. Pay close attention to the states in this guide, as many towns have the same name in Missouri and Kansas. Make sure you aren’t heading to the wrong state!

Day Trips for History Buffs

1. atchison, kansas.

Distance:  50.9 miles

Travel Time: 1 hr

Atchison is the childhood home of Amelia Earhart, and she is still highly celebrated in the town. The Amelia Earhart Birthplace is the actual home where Amelia was born and raised. It sits on a bluff overlooking the Missouri River and tours detailing her life, accomplishments, and mysterious disappearance are available to the public. Every July, the town also hosts the Amelia Earhart Festival. 

If you have an interest in the paranormal, stop by Atchison’s Sallie House , reportedly one of the most haunted houses in America. Railroad junkies should make a quick stop in the Atchison Rail Museum where you can tour their collection of numerous antique rail cars and take a ride on the mini-train. 

During the summer months, Atchison has a sightseeing trolley that takes guests to all the top historical sites in town, and be sure to peruse the great collection at the Muchnic Art Gallery .

2. Carthage, Missouri

Distance:  141.7 miles

Travel Time: 2 hrs 12 mins

On the Missouri side of Kansas City, an excellent day trip getaway is the historic city of Carthage. Established in 1842, Carthage has been completely reconstructed after it was demolished in the Civil War. Now, the town has over 600 buildings that are on the National Register of Historic Places, and the old town charm is unbeatable. Stroll through historic Carthage Square and visit the Jasper County Courthouse, an absolutely stunning feat of architecture in the heart of Carthage. 

If you have an interest in Civil War history, then you probably know a bit about the battle of Carthage. It was the first full-scale battle of the American Civil War, and this area was truly torn apart by the conflict. Battle reenactments are pretty common at the Battle of Carthage State Historic Site and learn even more at the Battle of Carthage Civil War Museum . 

Carthage also happens to have an abundance of Maple trees. If you can, visit in the fall when their gorgeous colors are ablaze! 

3. Concordia, Kansas

Distance:  211.9 miles

Travel Time: 3 hrs

Concordia is pushing it for a day trip, we admit, but it is well worth the drive. The historical city is loaded with interesting sites for the history buff. Stop in the Cloud County Historical Museum for a brief history of the area. 

Then, head for the National Orphan Train Complex . The Orphan Train saga seems completely unimaginable today, but from 1824 through 1929, countless orphans and destitute adults were loaded aboard trains in the east and sent to the western frontier for a new life. The museum offers an interesting look at the history of the orphan railroad and the people who took the journey. It also has a fully-restored antique passenger car, The Legend, that serves as the education center for the museum. 

Last up, make sure to stop in the POW Camp Concordia . The little museum details the horrors of what WWII POWs went through during their stay in America. Knowledgeable tour guides will lead you through the complex and guard tower. It is an eye-opening experience for most Americans.

4. Independence, Missouri

Distance:  10.6 miles

Travel Time: 23 mins

Independence Missouri is home to the 33rd president, Harry S. Truman. It is also the location of the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library & Museum , the Truman Home, and the Truman Depot . Truman lived most of his life in Independence, and you will find his visage around every corner. 

Take one of the Pioneer tours offered in town, where a covered wagon will escort you to all the major sites, and then visit the best example of Second Empire architecture in the U.S. at the 1881 Vaile Mansion. The house is huge, gorgeous, and possibly haunted, so enter if you dare.

5. Leavenworth, Kansas

Distance:  33.8 miles

Travel Time: 42 mins

And … we’re back to Kansas. Leavenworth is another historic city just a short road trip from Kansas City. Start your day with the Carroll Mansion Museum and admire the stunning stained glass. The 1880s Victorian home is an absolute showstopper with its handcrafted woodwork and incredible antiques.

Then, take a ride on the earliest known American carousel. Carousels are a thing here, as they also have a whole museum devoted to them, the C.W. Parker Carousel Museum . You will learn more than you ever cared to know about the amusement park ride and see a vintage one from 1913. Leavenworth is a cute city with unique historical sites that you don’t see everywhere. 

6. Weston, Missouri

Distance:  33.6 miles

Weston is a great day trip from Kansas City for a little nostalgia and peace. Visit the Green Dirt Farm , where you will learn all about the process of making sheep cheese and milk products. Plan on staying for lunch, as you can’t beat the farm-to-table freshness of their meals. 

Weston is also home to the oldest distillery west of the Mississippi, the Holladay Distillery , home of McCormick Distilling Co. The distillery will give you an insider view of the process of making vodka and bourbon using limestone-filtered water from the region. If hard spirits aren’t your thing, then sample wines and meads, along with some tasty cheeses, at Pirtle Winery . 

Finish your night in the lively Irish Pub, O’Malley’s, established in 1842. It features live music and craft beers from local breweries! Lake of the Ozarks is an incredible day trip for nature lovers and families. There are so many things to do in and around the lake that you will definitely need more than one day trip. 

Of course, you could spend the day in the cool water of the reservoir, just swimming, boating, fishing, or kayaking. But, there is so much more on offer. If you have kids in tow, consider heading for Big Surf Waterpark and hopping in the 375,000-gallon wave pool . If you prefer a hike, then head for the 30 miles of hiking trails that surround the lake, or even better, hop a little further south down to Ha Ha Tonka State Park.

At Ha Ha Tonka, you have natural springs, caves, sinkholes, and a huge natural bridge to explore. Not to mention the park has its own castle, or at the least the ruins of one. The house was built by a prominent Kansas City businessman at the turn of the 20th century. It’s pretty awesome to stand in castle ruins and overlook the bluff to picturesque Lake of the Ozarks. It is especially beautiful during the fall months when the trees lining the bluff are bright yellow, orange, and red.  

9. Louisburg, Kansas

Louisburg is a small town around 40 miles south of Kansas City and is home to the Louisburg Cider Mill where you can learn everything you need to know about apple cider. It’s not just a mill though, it’s an entire adorable farm and village, including a general store where you can get some apple butter, and a pumpkin patch and corn maze. It’s a great stop for a warm day when you just want to be outside and enjoy nature’s bounty.

Next, move from the ground to the sky and visit Powell Observatory. The observatory was built in 1984 and now has one of the largest telescopes in a 5-state area, the Ruisinger Telescope. In addition to peering through the scope, the observatory also hosts public education nights on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of May-October. On these special nights, educational topics in the field of Astronomy are discussed by experts, and they are both interesting and educational!

Spend some time marveling at the exterior before you head inside to a world of giant T-rex, mammoths of the sea, and virtual reality space encounters. The museum is hands-on and a fun place for both adults and children. 

If you have any interest in rodeo, livestock, agriculture, ag-business, or horse shows, then head over to the American Royal Museum next. The museum is interactive and very educational. It is especially fun in October when rodeo and livestock competitions are happening. 

Art lovers head for the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art . The museum is on the campus of Johnson County Community College. At certain times of day, a ring of fire burns around the structure, making it even more magnificent!

The state park gets its name from the distinctive sandstone formations in the area—not only are these gorgeous natural attractions but they’re also historically significant, with centuries-old etchings done by pioneers and indigenous people visible on these mushroom rocks.

It’s fascinating to learn that the many large rock spheres that populate the park are from Kansas’s underwater days—you can imagine how many billions of years old this makes the 200-plus rocks in the area.

Some of the engravings, too, are even older than the Europeans’ arrival in North America.

Formerly the home of Eva Whipple, the gang’s sister, where the outlaws used to occasionally hide, Dalton Gang Hideout is a popular tourist attraction today and has been since it was thrown open to the public in 1940.

Visitors can enjoy tours of the house and a secret passageway that was discovered by its residents in 1892—after Whipple evacuated the house—leading from the main structure to the stable nearby.

Fans of the author will enjoy touring the Mark Twain Birthplace Historic Site, a living history museum, where you’ll also find preserved a two-room cabin that belonged to the author.

In the cabin are displayed several of his personal effects, such as first editions of some of his works and a prized manuscript of his masterpiece, “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”.

The Historic Site sits along the manmade Mark Twain Lake, so you can also just spend some time unwinding on the banks.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Two Kansas women who vanished as they tried to pick up children for a birthday party two weeks ago were killed over a custody dispute involving a group of anti-government Oklahomans calling themselves “God’s Misfits,” authorities said Monday.

Their vehicle was found March 30 along a rural Oklahoma highway with ample evidence of a bloody confrontation, setting off a multi-agency effort to secure the children’s safety while searching for the women and avoiding more violence.

Veronica Butler, 27, and Jilian Kelley, 39, of Hugoton, Kansas, had arranged with the grandmother of Butler’s two children to meet at a highway intersection on the morning of March 30 and pick up the 6- and 8-year-old.

“This case did not end the way we had hoped. It’s certainly been a tragedy for everyone involved,” Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation Director Aungela Spurlock said.

The four people arrested Saturday on charges of kidnapping and first-degree murder are the grandmother, Tifany Adams, 54; her boyfriend Tad Cullum, 43; Cora Twombly, 44; and her husband Cole Twombly, 50. All meet regularly with several others in a group they call “God’s Misfits,” their arrest affidavits said. Relatives of Tad Cullum and the Twomblys did not immediately return phone messages seeking comment. Tifany Adams’ stepmother, Elise Adams, said she had no information on the case.

Butler’s family found the vehicle just a few miles from the meet-up spot after the women missed the party in Kansas. It was a gruesome scene.

“Blood was found on the roadway and the edge of the roadway. Butler’s glasses were also found in the roadway south of the vehicle, near a broken hammer. A pistol magazine was found inside Kelley’s purse at the scene, but no pistol was found,” the affidavits said.

Investigators gathered evidence that the killings were planned, with Adams buying pre-paid “burner” cellphones to communicate and five stun guns at a nearby store. Her internet searches included asking about pain levels using the weapons, the affidavits said.

A teenage witness told authorities that Cora Twombly said that at one point, “the plan was to throw an anvil through Butler’s windshield while driving, making it look like an accident because anvils regularly fall off of work vehicles.”

The affidavits said Butler and Adams were in a “problematic custody battle.” Adams’ son was in a rehabilitation facility hours away in Oklahoma City, and Butler was allowed only supervised visits each Saturday. Kelley, the wife of a pastor in Hugoton, was Butler’s court-authorized choice to supervise visitations.

The Oklahoma Court of Civil Appeals had directed a trial judge in 2022 to give the children’s parents shared custody. The ruling described them as “very young and immature parents” who accused each other of “inappropriate behavior and choices,” but said “the children are nurtured and comforted by Mother” and ”happy and excited to be with Father.”

Butler’s request for more time with her children and unsupervised visitation was likely to be granted at a hearing in April, Butler’s attorney told investigators.

On March 23, with a court date looming, Adams bought the stun guns. On March 29, Cullum used heavy equipment to dig a hole in a pasture he rented, not far from the meet-up site, the affidavits said.

Authorities wouldn’t say at Monday’s news conference where the bodies were found, but the affidavits said some of the “burner phones” stopped transmitting that morning in the vicinity of the pasture, where “a hole had been dug and filled back in and then covered with hay.”

It wasn’t entirely clear where the children were during the search. Adams told investigators that she had left them in the care of another couple on March 29 and 30; the affidavits said that couple regularly hosted the “God’s Misfits” meetings.

Authorities said the affidavits weren’t unsealed until after the children’s safety was assured. “We were successful. No shots were fired and the children were kept out of harm’s way,” said District Attorney George Leach III.

The four people charged are being held without bond in the Texas County Jail pending court appearances Wednesday, said Texas County Court Clerk Renee Ellis. Court records don’t indicate whether any have an attorney speak on their behalf.

“I don’t know a thing about her business,” Elise Adams said when asked about Tifany Adams. “All I can tell you about her is she was a wonderful step-daughter to me.”

OSBI spokesman Hunter McKee said the bodies’ identities and causes of death are pending a medical examiner’s report.

“This case is tragic,” McKee said. “You have two people who are dead and four people who committed an absolutely brutal crime.”

The Maya Train Will Get You to All of Yucatán’s Best Spots. But Not Yet.

In December, the train began running on its first route through Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. On a five-day journey a few months later, the author encountered enthusiasm, and scheduling hiccups.

I stepped off the platform at the gleaming new Maxcanú train station, eager to see the magnificent Maya archaeological site of Uxmal. All I needed was a taxi to take me there, a trip of about 30 miles away.

There are no taxis, said the stationmaster, as we stood on the polished limestone floors of the high-ceilinged station, which was cool and breezy despite the brilliant late-morning sun outside. And I was the third person in two weeks to get off at Maxcanú expecting to reach Uxmal, he said.

I was midway through a five-day trip to explore the brand-new Maya Train and several of its destinations in the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico . Designed to run 965 miles (1,554 kilometers) around a loop of 34 stations when completed, the train will whisk passengers in cool comfort through colonial cities, archaeological sites, splashy resorts and tropical forests.

Now I was stunned. Wrangling a taxi has never been a problem in Mexico. But the drivers gathered in the main square of Maxcanú offered only beat-up vans that hopscotch through small towns, where I might or might not find a taxi to Uxmal. The next van was leaving in 45 minutes.

Yucatán’s layers of history have long held me spellbound. During earlier car trips, I have clambered up deserted Maya temples and palaces, stepped into the cool naves of massive 16th-century churches and visited restored haciendas, testaments of the ostentation — and hardship — of the peninsula’s 19th-century plantation economy. Traveling by train, I thought, would allow me to steep myself in more of that history.

But as I found in Maxcanú, a train won’t necessarily get you to where you want to go.

During my February trip, I traveled on the only route then available, an east-west leg that opened in December and runs from Cancún to Mérida, and then south through the port city of Campeche to the Maya site of Palenque (a short route between Cancún and Playa del Carmen opened last month, with three trains a day). I encountered scheduling confusion, unfinished stations and a dearth of trains — just two operating daily each way between Cancún and Campeche, and only one to Palenque. Overnight sleepers and special dining trains seem years away.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador considers the Maya Train his showcase development project, and wants to inaugurate the rest of the train before he leaves office on October 1. Based on my experience, that goal seems elusive.

A $29-billion route through the jungle

I started my journey in Cancún, where in the pre-dawn gloom the station hovered like a glowing spaceship. An attendant scanned the ticket I had bought online and a half-dozen more pointed me toward my tourist-class car, which was about a quarter full. I planned to go to Campeche, about 300 miles away, stopping once each day. At 120 kilometers (about 75 miles) an hour, the train covers the route in about six hours, the same as a car. (When construction is complete, the train’s speed should increase to 160 kilometers an hour.)

The car’s wide windows looked out at a wall of low jungle. The blue-green seats were comfortable and there was ample space between the rows. I bought a very good cappuccino at the snack bar, but declined the plastic-wrapped sandwiches. The rest of the merchandise was fruit cups, milk boxes and junk food.

The train will ultimately cost much more than the $29 billion budgeted so far, and it’s not the first time ambitious planners have alighted on the region. Cancún was once a tiny fishing village, selected half a century ago as a tourist hub. Last year 10 million international tourists flew into its airport, more than the airports of Mexico City, Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta combined.

But uncontrolled growth has stressed the Caribbean coast’s fragile environment. The Maya Train, scientists warn , will push those problems south, threatening the area’s water supply, its unique system of underground limestone caves and its vast nature reserves.

Mr. López Obrador has charged ahead, handing the train over to the military , and arguing that it will spread Cancún’s wealth and attract new visitors. Mexico received more than 42 million overseas tourists last year and they spent almost $31 billion .

Local governments see an opportunity. “The train will allow people to disperse throughout the peninsula,” said Michelle Fridman, the tourism secretary for Yucatán state, which promotes dozens of attractions far beyond highlights like Mérida and Chichén Itzá .

Now that the train is operating, transport companies will begin to connect stations with lesser-known sites nearby, she said.

It’s fair to ask whether the train is the most effective way to develop the peninsula’s tourism. Tour companies already run trips to many sites from major cities, which are well served by buses. Driving a rental car through most of the area is considered safe , according to U.S. State Department travel guidance .

Canceled trip.

It took two hours (and one time-zone change) to reach Valladolid, a colonial city of handsome streets and ancient churches, where I bought the rest of my tickets at the station. A tourist-class ticket from Cancún to Valladolid costs 472 pesos (around $28) for foreigners and 355 pesos (around $21) for Mexicans. First class, with wider seats, costs 755.50 pesos and 566.50 pesos, and discounts are available for older travelers and residents of the five states along the train’s route. (A first-class bus from downtown Cancún to Valladolid costs between 222 and 344 pesos, depending on the time of day, and takes half an hour longer.)

It was impossible to run the new Maya Train tracks into dense city centers and the Valladolid station, like the rest, was outside the urban core. A waiting bus took disembarking passengers downtown, a 15-minute ride for 35 pesos.

That day I toured Ek Balam , the site of a ninth-century Maya kingdom that is dominated by a 100-foot palace distinguished by a facade of carvings depicting winged warriors, stylized animal features and geometric patterns bordered by giant fangs. Admission to the site includes entry to the X-Canché cenote, one of thousands of limestone sinkholes that were sacred to the Maya.

Later that afternoon, I was wandering through the Museum of Ethnic Clothing, a private collection of traditional dress, embroidery and hats, when a WhatsApp message from the ticket office blinked on my phone. My train scheduled for the following day was canceled.

I decided to deal with the problem in the morning and enjoy the city. As I wandered past the antique shops and boutique hotels of the elegant Calzada de los Frailes, it was clear that Valladolid’s tourism, and the infrastructure to handle it, was well established. The Maya Train is simply an alternative way to reach a city that tourists discovered years ago.

‘We’re on the Tren Maya!’

In the morning, I found that my train had not been canceled, but the station for which I had a ticket, Tixkokob, was closed. I got off instead one stop earlier at Izamal, known for its ocher streets and the giant Franciscan convent of San Antonio de Padua, built atop the ruins of a pyramid.

During the 90-minute ride, I heard widespread enthusiasm among fellow travelers who expressed a willingness to give the train time to work out the kinks. “We’re an experiment,” said Oliva Escobedo Ochoa, 64, who was vacationing from her home in central Mexico.

Leticia Iliassich, 57, who is Mexican, was traveling with her Croatian husband along with relatives from Mexico and Croatia. They had initially been scheduled on an earlier train to Mérida that had been canceled. “We knew that it was a new project,” she said. “We don’t mind.”

The group had already sent a video to friends declaring, “We’re on the Tren Maya!”

At the Izamal station I hitched a 15-minute ride into the town center with a man who had asked me to take his photo alongside the train and his father. From there I negotiated a taxi to Hacienda San Lorenzo Aké, a working hacienda that still turns the fiber from an agave plant called henequén into coarse rope. Global demand for henequén, known as Yucatán’s “green gold,” brought fantastic wealth to the region in the mid-19th century, speckling the peninsula with more than 1,000 haciendas. ( Many are now sumptuous hotels.)

Where geometry, nature and the divine merge

It was during my third day that I found myself stuck in Maxcanú, after a 90-minute train ride from Izamal. The stationmaster, an army captain, offered me a ride to Uxmal, just as he had to the stranded tourists before me.

Eying Uxmal’s 4 p.m. final ticket sale, I accepted.

My situation made it clear just how distant the Maya Train’s promises are for tourists seeking to explore more of Yucatán. In time, that will change, said Ms. Fridman, the tourism secretary. “The idea is to have more hotels along the train line,” she said. “That will happen little by little.”

But Uxmal , among the most stunning of the Maya sites, made up for the inconvenience. Uxmal’s grand buildings are faced with intricate decorative masks as well as friezes in which geometry, nature and the divine merge. New plaques at each structure offer detailed information in English and Spanish, part of the government’s investment in improving displays at Maya sites for the train project.

Most tourists either take day trips by car or bus to Uxmal from Mérida or stay at one of three nearby hotels. As I finished dinner at my hotel, the dining room began to fill up: 47 Polish tourists had arrived.

Panama hats and a cramped van

My plan for the day was to go by taxi to Bécal, a town where Panama hats are woven in limestone caves to keep the fibers soft, and then pick up the afternoon train in nearby Calkiní for the port city of Campeche.

But I spent so much time watching the hat-making demonstration and then fitting my new hat and buying gifts that we set off with little time to reach the station. To my chagrin, I missed the train, the last one of the day.

On Calkiní’s central square, I found a van that was leaving for Campeche. Cost: 65 pesos. Time: about 1 hour and 20 minutes, similar to what I would have spent on the train. Of course, I was trapped in a cramped seat and had to listen to the driver’s choice of sentimental ballads, but I was dropped off in downtown Campeche, close to my hotel.

The next day, I toured the Museum of Maya Archaeology , an expertly curated collection that included haunting jade funeral masks, glyphs and delicate ceramic figures.

José Madrigal, 45, an engineer from Fremont, Calif., was trying to make Maya pottery interesting for his twin sons. The boys had just turned 5 and their birthday present had been a ride on the Maya Train. “They love trains,” Mr. Madrigal said. Then the family moved on, keeping up a brisk clip through the museum. They had another train to catch.

Should you take the train?

Yes, if you are traveling between larger stations. The train also offers a way to get to Palenque, which is harder to reach and has roads with security concerns. Travelers can stow bicycles on board.

To see train times, check the destinations on the website . You cannot buy tickets online more than a week in advance. But when you finally board, the ride is smooth — and the coffee is excellent.
