What is Educational Travel? Educational Travel is a carefully planned combination of tours, site visits and hands-on learning opportunities, built around clear learning objectives. An educational tour is more than a vacation. It’s a tool for learning and success with fun and excitement built in. By walking in the footsteps of emperors, seeing the art that inspired a society and speaking a foreign language to communicate, students are engaging themselves and becoming life-long, self-directed learners.

Who are the key players?

Group Leaders – Teachers Who Travel for Free

Group leaders are typically teachers (though they don’t need to be), and as the name suggests they lead their group of travelers overseas. Group leaders choose an educational tour itinerary or work with their international program consultant to customize one. They recruit a group, prepare them for the trip, and while on tour, provide supervision, educational leadership and handle any necessary discipline. Understanding that this is a bit of work, group leaders travel free when they have a group of six or more student participants. Most companies (ACIS included) allow first-time group leaders to travel free with just five participants. Group leaders will also earn World Traveler Rewards points which they can redeem for extra rewards such as attending global conferences (free trips abroad without their students), cash rewards and more.

The word “guide” barely scratches the surface of all they do. ACIS Tour Managers are comedians, historians, and secret-agents all rolled into one. They have native knowledge of culture (even in the unique case they’re not), and they handle logistics like an engineer. They greet you at the airport and are with you 24/7 during your tour. They educate, inspire, ease your mind, solve your problems and leave a lasting impression on quite a few young minds along the way.

What do Students do on an Educational Journey?

Educational travel is about experiential learning. Students on an educational journey see and enrich their knowledge of places and works of art they’ve learned about in the classroom. EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (April 23, 2024) – N.C. Gov. Roy Cooper joined NASA Astronaut Christina Koch and Chancellor Harold L. Martin Sr. at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University to highlight North Carolina’s strong STEM public education programs and discuss how public education has supported their careers. Students from the award-winning N.C. A&T rocketry team and several departments including physics, chemistry, biology and others were in attendance to hear from Koch, the governor and Martin. Following the discussion, the group visited the drone bay and viewed demonstrations from the rocketry and engineering teams.

“North Carolina’s strong public schools are setting up our students for success and encouraging them to shoot for the stars to reach their full potential,” said Cooper. “We must invest in our public schools so they have the resources they need to prepare future astronauts, doctors and leaders. Astronaut Koch is a wonderful example of just how far you can go with a North Carolina public education – all the way to the moon!”

“My time in North Carolina sparked my passion for exploration and helped me set my own journey to becoming an astronaut,” said Koch. “A strong educational and extracurricular foundation is key to ensuring we have the right set of skills to accomplish big things in space and on Earth in the future.”

“We’re delighted to join with NASA Astronaut Christina Koch and Gov. Roy Cooper in drawing student attention to the exciting career possibilities in America’s space program,” said Martin. “Our long history with NASA and space exploration ranges from alumnus and astronaut Ronald McNair’s service in the space shuttle program to three current A&T students who were named this year as Astronaut Scholars. We firmly believe that North Carolina A&T will figure prominently in America’s space program and look forward to our students being even more inspired to apply to the space agency by today’s visit.”

At the event, Koch highlighted her journey from North Carolina public schools to exploring the final frontier of space. Koch grew up in Jacksonville, North Carolina, and attended North Carolina School of Science and Math in Durham, North Carolina, and White Oak High School in Jacksonville. She then attended North Carolina State University where she earned Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering and physics and a Master of Science in electrical engineering, as well as an honorary doctorate.

Koch was selected as a NASA astronaut in 2013 and served as a flight engineer on the International Space Station for three expeditions. She will be returning to space as Mission Specialist I of NASA’s Artemis II Mission. Artemis II is planned to launch September 2025 and will be the first mission to take humans to deep space in more than 50 years.

Cooper declared 2024 as the Year of Public Schools and is spending this year highlighting North Carolina’s strong public schools, teachers and staff across the state to show the positive impacts of a well-funded public education system on the state’s economy and communities. From career readiness to educating future astronauts, North Carolina public schools go above and beyond in preparing students for whatever comes next in their lives.

3D printers and other cutting-edge technology bring Biden official to Phoenix College

Don Graves, the U.S. deputy Commerce secretary, visited Phoenix College, where he was handed a 3D image of his face.

The image was created by Phoenix College students using state-of-the-art equipment purchased with a $4.2 million federal grant the college received in March 2023.

"Wow. That is stunning," Graves said, marveling at the 3D image, which students had created using a photograph pulled from the internet.

Graves was in Arizona to see firsthand how investments made possible by legislation passed by Congress and signed into law by President Joe Biden are having an impact in the community.

The visit by a high-ranking member of the Biden administration comes ahead of the 2024 election, in which Arizona is a key battleground state.

At Phoenix College, Graves visited a room filled with 3D printers purchased with money from the federal grant. Some of the printers were in the process of printing projects created by students.

Phoenix College received the grant as part of the Biden administration's efforts to help institutions that serve minority populations expand access to the internet and other technologies to prepare students for high-skill jobs, Graves said.

"It's providing them with the tools that they need, whether it's the hardware, but also the know-how ," Graves said. "What Phoenix College is doing with the more than $4 million that we've provided as part of the Connecting and Minority Communities program is all about making sure that people have that access, are able to take those hopes and those dreams and turn them into lives of dignity. "

Paul Ross, chief information officer at Phoenix College, said the grant has allowed the school to create an environment of innovation that allows students to have access to 3D printing and other advanced technologies.

"The environment we are creating with our students encourages the development of essential skills and prepares students to excel in a job market increasingly driven by technology," Ross said.

In the evolving job market, there are roles such as 3D printing specialists, AI engineers and IT specialists who have a broad and deep knowledge across diverse businesses, from home-based businesses to multinational companies, Ross said.

This shift underlines the critical role of technology, he said.

"As students grow more interconnected with the global landscape, they recognize the significance of mastering advanced technologies for successful leadership and innovation in their future careers," Ross said.

Phoenix College is one of four institutions in Arizona that received grants under the Biden administration's $268 million Connecting Minority Communities Pilot Program. The other three are the University of Arizona, which received $3 million; Dine College, which received $2.9 million; and Tohono O'odham Community College, which received $1.9 million.

Phoenix College President Kimberly Britt said the $4.2 million grant from the federal government is being used to fund a variety of programs, including partnering with local school districts to make sure all students have access to broadband internet to support their learning.

"This is something we realized post-pandemic, obviously, that there are just Wi-Fi deserts in the city," Britt said. "Because we think every child should have an opportunity to grow and learn, and technology shouldn't be a barrier."

The college also has distributed hundreds of laptops to students from underserved communities in information technology programs.

Access to the computers and other technology funded with the grant is helping close a digital divide, Britt said.

"No one should be left behind because of money, and so we're trying to create access to education for every student who walks through our doors," Britt said.
