We will gather around the campfire after dinner to sing Berber music under the sky in the desert camp, Where we will spend the night in Erg Chigaga . Then you have to wake up early to enjoy the mesmerizing sunrise, and after breakfast, at the end, you will go to Mhamid the last point in our 3-day Mhamid excursion.

Erg Chegaga is an expansive Sahara desert sand dune near M’hamid El Ghizlane on the Morocco desert tour. It is one of the only places in the world where you can experience such a large expanse of Sahara desert sand without interruption. At Erg Chegaga, you will find a unique, peaceful experience. The view of the endless desert stretches on for miles, and you can easily spend days taking in the tranquil atmosphere, with the chance to observe native wildlife – like Fennec foxes and the occasional gazelle – and spot constellations in the night sky.

It’s best to visit between December and March when temperatures are cooler and there is more opportunity to enjoy the desert. If you are interested in exploring the desert further, you can also check out the sand boarding and camel safaris that are available at Erg Chegaga.

• Day 1: M'hamid-Erg Chigaga: 2 hours

Departure around 10 or 11 a.m. From M’hamid (Berber village) to Erg Chegag a dunes . These dunes are far away from civilization with about 60 km of off-road, driven by 4×4 and passing different features of the Sublime desert, Erg, Reg, Hamada, and sacred Oases.

Lunch will be enjoyed in the oases in the Sublime desert, then, our off-road continues to Erg Chigaga, where you have the chance to experience camel riding and enjoy wildlife, Sandboarding, and enjoy an amazing experience, and watch the sunset over the big dunes of Erg in Morocco.

Your guide will assist you with that, and you directly pay the supplier in Erg Chigaga. They cost 60 Euros per quad an hour and 120 Euros per buggy per person for an hour.

What do I wear for the camel ride?

Be sure to wear full and loose clothes on your camel trekking tour, especially in the Sublime desert. If you want to wear shorts, long shorts are recommended, Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and comfortable shoes are also advised to make your camel trekking in Morocco more comfortable.

The 4×4 journey to Erg Chigaga takes you to one of the least explored sand dunes in Morocco. The off road drive will take you out of M’hamid (where the paved road ends) and into the wilderness of the Sahara desert.   

This is a full day round trip tour departing out of M’hamid. Erg Chigaga is located 60 km west of the M’hamid.

Well, the beautiful Erg Chigaga tour from Mhamid , starts around: 9 am with the dromedaries, then the first step for lunch, in the shade of the palm grove; Later drive by jeep around 15h for the Erg Chigaga , 2 hours of the track with a stop at the nomadic family to have tea ( nomadic whiskey). Later Arrive at the Moroccan dunes, Camel ride to watch the sunset, from the top of the highest, (30-minute walk to access). Then we return for tea. We had an amazing trip and it was all perfectly coordinated from start to end. We were picked up from our hotel in Marrakech by Brahim who took care of us and provided us with an amazing trip. The vehicle was comfortable (Land Cruiser Prado) and Brahim stopped at multiple scenic and cultural/historic sites along the journey including multiple Kasbah's, Berber villages, view of the Atlas Mountains and more. Brahim was more than happy to stop at any place we wanted to and would always be happy to help us with any photos. Erg Chebbi was awesome and the accommodation at the luxury tent at the campsite is incredible (included private toilet and shower with hot water). We enjoyed the experience of a camel ride to the camp site, sand boarding on the dunes and quad biking the next day which Brahim helped organise. The accommodation throughout the trip was great and very comfortable. We returned to Marrakech and were dropped of at our accommodation. My wife and I took the two day tour from Marrakesh to Mhamid and Erg Lihoudi camp. The tour was as advertised and described on their website. Pick up time was right on time and the driver personally picked us up from our Riad in Marrakesh, carrying our luggage. The drive through the Atlas, and then Anti Atlas, mountain range was amazing, allowing us to soak in the scenery on this amazing road. The landscape starts changing from urban, to cactus-filled hills, to mountainous and then desert! We had a nice and relaxing stop on the road for a lunch, and were treated to a mint tea in Mhamid just before we rode the camels to the camp site where we had our own tent (standard package). At the camp, we mingled with a few of the other guests while eating this delicious and super filling dinner. We chilled outside under a sky full of stars where I saw the milky way for the first time in my own eyes. The hosts played some traditional Berber music as we sat around a fire. Every moment was magical, offering us an amazing escape from New York city, and also from the hustle and bustle of Marrakesh! The sunrise the next morning was out of this world. After a delicious breakfast we got on our way back as Brahim picked us up again and started our journey back towards Marrakesh. Desert tour from marrakech to erg chegaga 3 days – itinerary:, 1st day: marrakech – agdez.

At 8.30 you will depart from your hotel or riad in Marrakech to cross the High Atlas Mountains .  Shortly after you descend from the highest point, a road leads off to the left heading for Kasbah Telouet.   Now in ruins, it used to belong to the “ Lords of the Atlas” , the Glaoui family. The two main parts have been exposed to the wind and the rain, having been abandoned and plundered.

Unfortunately, the whole Kasbah is now closed due to the damage caused by the earthquake that struck Morocco in September 2023. Nevertheless, it is still worth visiting the exterior with a local guide to discover its rich history.

Driving south, you follow along the beautiful  Ounila Valley with surprising rock and soil colours, little Berber villages and fields, plus more humble Kasbahs.  Almost at the end of the road, you reach Kasbah Aït ben Haddou , where you will probably have  lunch.

This Kasbah makes up one of Morocco’s nine  UNESCO World Heritage sites and is the most spoken about Kasbah in the country. The architectural style with its earthen constructions are perfectly adapted to the climatic conditions, in harmony with the natural and social environment. Probably originating in the 17th century, it is also famous as the backdrop to many Hollywood classical and Biblical films.

Having driven through Ouarzazate , we continue south over the Tizi-n-Tinfifte pass to Agdez . Descending from the pass you will immediately be struck by the view of the large number of palm trees in the oasis. This marks the start of the Dra’a Valley which produces a remarkable 44 varieties of dates.  The harvest begins in September and lasts a month or so.   Agdez is one of the best places to choose from this wide selection for the freshest and tastiest ones.

You will spend the night in a local guest house.

2nd day: Agdez – Chegaga Dunes

After breakfast, a visit to  Kasbah Tamnougalte , the oldest kasbah in the Dra’a Valley is on the timetable. Sill inhabited in parts, the Jewish quarter has been crumbling ever since the departure of its inhabitants to Israel – the last person left in 1963.

From here, we take the ancient caravan road. During the era of the caravans treks, this road was used to carry goods from sub-Saharan Africa and Morocco. The road passes between the mountains and the river, through many villages and gardens.  So you will gain a better idea of the current way of Berber life in the life-giving  oases.

Just before the police check-point in Tansikht , the driver can point out the dinosaur footprints in the rock right at the side of the road. A little further on, you arrive in  Tinsouline , from where you can drive about a kilometre  to the fascinating rock carvings of animals long extinct in Morocco. This is  Foum Chenna, some 4000 years old.

Zagora is the largest town before the Sahara and where you shall stop for lunch. In  Tamgroute,  the potteries  which are famous for their green glaze are well worth visiting.  This is also true of the ancient Quranic library with exquisite hand-written Arabic texts.

In the afternoon you continue the last stretch to M’hamid , the gate to the desert and the end of the asphalted road.  In the Erg Lihoudi dunes , you will stop for lunch, or alternatively in Kasbah Touareg in Ksar Bounou.

The  Erg Chegaga dunes (300m) involve 60km driving through the desert.  These dunes are far away from civilisation, far out in the real desert ……. and the silence and the expanse of the sand are extraordinary. Here you can take a camel ride .

You have dinner and spend the night at a luxury camp with private bathroom, king-sized beds, beautiful Moroccan furnishings.

3rd day: Erg Chegaga – Marrakech

After breakfast, you travel across another 90km of the desert with varying scenery. At the dry Lake Iriqui, you may well experience a mirage in the heat, and will also have an opportunity to look for small fossils.

Lunch may be in Foum Zguid , the first village after the desert. “Foum” means “mouth”; i.e “mouth/source” of the Zguid River.  The road north passes unusual amazing rock formations to the small town of Taznakht.   This small town is famous for its Berber carpets and rugs, where you can watch women working at their looms.  Lunch could alternatively be here.

From here we cross the High Atlas again, this time by a slightly different road. You reach Marrakech at the end of the afternoon, having had the best possible Saharan desert trip in all Morocco.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is the erg chegaga desert from marrakech.

The drive from Ouarzazate to Erg Chegaga dunes is about 530 KM (330 miles) – about a five hour drive each way. The journey to Erg Chegaga is broken up with an overnight stay in a guest house in Agdz on the first day.  There are also multiple stops at sites of interest, for walks, tea / coffee, and whenever desired or necessary. The return journey involves a full-day’s drive back to Marrakech.

Will our tent in the desert camps have a private bathroom and shower?

Absolutely! You spend the night in luxury desert tents equipped with a private bathroom and shower with running hot water.

Do the tents in the camps come with AC/ heating?

During the colder months from mid-December to late January, the nights can be cold, necessitating heating. Also, from June to early September, the Erg Chegaga desert experiences extremely high temperatures and most of the camps close down. So, we would recommend changing the destination to Merzouga instead. 

As only a few camps in Erg Chegaga are equipped with a reversible AC, please inform us in advance if you wish to have any of these amenities in your tent. This could mean an increase in the price!

Will there be electricity outlets inside our tent for charging phones and cameras?

Desert camps in Erg Chegaga are equipped with electricity outlets for charging phones, cameras, and other electronic devices, frequently in the form of USBs.

Is there Wi-Fi or internet connectivity available during the desert tour?

The accommodation in Agdz is equipped with Wi-Fi connections. However, there is no Wi-Fi access in the camps in Erg Chegaga because the signal strength is limited or intermittent due to the remote location. 

If staying connected is essential during your desert tour, you could consider obtaining a local SIM card available at the airport on arrival or bringing a portable Wi-Fi device.

What should I wear for the camel ride?

We suggest you opt for loose clothing to avoid chafing. Don’t forget essentials like a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and comfortable shoes.

How long is the camel ride in Erg Chegaga?

The standard camel ride lasts around 45 minutes to an hour. But, it can be tailored to accommodate your preference.

Can we skip the camel ride? If yes, then how do we get to the camp?

Erg Chegaga can only be reached in a 4×4, so the driver will be taking you to the camp in the car. Once you arrive, there is no need to take the camel ride if you do not wish.

Is sandboarding included?

Yes, you can do as much as you want – just ask the camp staff for a board!

Can I photograph local people while travelling in Morocco?

We feel that it is important to be mindful of the local customs and sensitivities regarding photography, especially in rural areas. Some people may feel uncomfortable or unwilling to be photographed either for cultural reasons or as a personal preference.

So we would like to advise you always to seek permission before taking any photos. While some may agree, others may decline or expect remuneration. Respecting their wishes will always be much appreciated.

Erg Chigaga consists of several ergs and it’s the largest golden sand sea in Morocco, located approximately 45 km from the small Berber oasis town of M’Hamid El Ghizlane in the province of Zagora, Morocco.

Erg Chegaga or Erg Chigaga could be an excellent destination for people who want to see the real Sahara desert when staying in Marrakech. Erg Chegaga is known for its high sand dunes and is located in the Souss-Massa-Draa region, about 45 km from the Berber town M’hamid and 98 km from the provincial town of Zagora. It is Morocco’s largest golden sand sea, winding along the horizon for approximately 35 km with a peak at 300m.

The journey from Marrakech takes about nine hours, however, it is only accessible by 4X4 or by camel because the road is unpaved once you pass the gate when approaching the city of M’hamid. M’hamid is a small administrative center and the last oasis in the Sahara desert. To the south lies a rock desert, Hammada du Draa. In M’hamid Wadi Draa disappears under the sand dunes.

If you come from Zagora you will pass first through Amazrou, Tamegroute, Tinfou dunes, and M’hamid. Since you are traveling via this caravans route, you can stop at Tamegroute, here you can visit the Zawia Nasri Library which was founded in the 17th century by Mohamed Bou Nasri, and enjoy all kinds of pottery.

Once you arrive in Mhamid, many guides are offering one-night stays in Erg Chegaga in a desert camp and camel treks. Do yourself a favor and enjoy a night in the middle of the dunes under the shine of a thousand stars.

Due to its difficult access, Erg Chegaga is not as crowded and touristic as Erg Chebbi in the Merzouga region, which makes it very interesting. It is considered to be more a romantic Erg . The golden sand dunes of Erg Chigaga are loved by photographers, artists, and adventurers for their perfect solitude and tranquility.

Day 1 Mhamid - Erg Chegaga

This short trip is a search for a new experience.

It is an adventure for travelers who do not have much time to visit the Sahara. Start is in Mhamid, gateway to the desert, destination is the famous dunes of Erg Chegaga.

The journey begins in the morning driving straight into the true, huge Sahara. First, we drive about 10 km along small dunes and tamarisk trees. The area changes into a different landscape with acacia trees (Hammada), then we reach a sacred oasis with a source of water that runs all year round. A good place for a break and to explore the oasis.

Later, we continue our way to Erg Chegaga for lunch. The rest of the day is yours since the dunes are just at your feet. A beautiful large group of dunes stretching over a length of 40 km and up to 300 m high. Enjoy this beautiful landscape on a 1 hour camel ride. Experience a new dimension of tranquility and serenity during the sunset on the high dunes of Erg Chegaga. In the evening we meet at the camp fire for dinner with traditional music. Day 2: Erg Chegaga - Mhamid

3rd Day: Erg-Chigaga dunes - Marrakech

We get up early in the quiet of the morning to see the sun slowly rise over the rolling dunes. Following an amazing breakfast and a relaxing shower, we set out to return to Marrakech. We loop back via Foum Zguid and across the magical stretch of Iraqi lakes, passing through more breathtaking scenery. I highly recommend this company, Aziz, and their team! He was very helpful and gave us all the information we needed. We did a Camel ride, and neither of us had ever been on a camelback so it was an experience in itself. We stopped at some interesting sites before stopping in for lunch. Our guide made some amazing tea. In the afternoon, Aziz picked us up from the east and came to see the sunset. The camp facilities are amazing - the tents were very comfortable and not cold at all at night. They gave us a very nice traditional meal for dinner.
