I have always wanted to see this queen live

' src=

she is not the queen of neo soul. It’s Jill Scott

' src=

Whitney is the queen of crack.

Nah Badu is the queen

Whitney was not on crack she is still Queen obviously

Neo soul artists Jaguar wright, Jill Scott, Lauren Hill, Amel Larrieux, Angie Stone , floetry, solonge . India irie, Ericka badu not the queen of neo soul. Jill Scott made it popular and wrote for Erica .

' src=

How did Jill Scott make it popular when artists like Erykah, D’Angelo and Maxwell were outselling before she even stepped on the scene? Baduizm outsold everything Jill ever did. No shade to her. Who Is Jill Scott Vol 1 is a classic but she isn’t the queen of neo soul.

D’Angelo and Maxwell are male for queen Erica music is not fully neo soul

' src=

Too many artists going on tour at once

' src=

It does seem that many artists are going out “on top” of each other. Consumers pockets are only so big, but I wish Badu, NE, Beyonce, Jill, and Janet success…

' src=

Wow there’s demand for an Erykah Badu arena tour? The woman had two good eras… Baduizm and The Bag Lady era. I couldn’t tell you what music she’s released since then….and that was the early 2000’s….

' src=

You have no idea what you’re talking about

' src=

Technically her last hit was “Window Seat” in 2010. She hasn’t released much since then. Erykah is very revered as one of the originators of the neo-soul genre. She’s still very relevant. Don’t forget that part.

' src=

She ain’t gon sho up for at least an hour. Sing 2-3 songs and she bounced. RUDE and non caring for her fans. I’m done.

Erykah Badu and Yasiin Bey

A holy union is hitting the road this summer, with Erykah Badu linking up with Yasiin Bey, a.k.a. Mos Def on a 25-city U.S tour.

The ‘Unfollow Me Tour’ kicks off on June 11th at San Antonio’s AT&T Center before continuing on to stops in Chicago, New York, Atlanta, and Los Angeles and then wrapping up on July 23 at the American Airlines Center in Badu’s hometown of Dallas, Texas.

Badu will also be performing at London’s All Points East festival this August, alongside Stormzy, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Jungle.

Tickets will officially go on sale this Thursday, April 20th at 2:22 p.m. local time via Ticketmaster, but fans can get exclusive access to pre-sale tickets by signing up for the AT&T Center’s All Access Newsletter.

Along with Badu and Bey, the tour announcement also promises “more extraordinary guests”

The “high priestess of neo-soul” has played a smattering of theater and festival dates in recent years but hasn’t launched a full fledge tour since 2018.

More recently, Badu reunited with The Roots on their new track “Misunderstood” featuring fellow Philadelphian Tierra Whack, and made a surprise appearance on BTS’ member RM’s song “Yun,” which opened his critically acclaimed solo effort Indigo .

And speaking of The Roots, former Black Star member Bey will appear on Black Thought’s forthcoming solo record, Streams of Thought Vol. 4 .

The MC shared that the track will “represent a seismic shift in the game,” and has apparently been sitting on the track for a few years.

Erykah Badu’s ‘Unfollow Me’ Tour Hits Chicago and Detroit This Weekend

Tacuma roeback, managing editor.

  • July 1, 2023

Chicago and Detroit hold a special place for Erykah Badu.

“I’m at home,” said the four-time Grammy-winning R&B and Soul artist about performing at those chocolate cities. “I feel like I’m five years old, and no matter what drawing I put up on the refrigerator of Chicago or Detroit, I’m going to be appreciated and encouraged.”

The July 4 holiday weekend is about to be a homecoming as Ms. Badu takes her “Unfollow Me” Tour to Chicago and Detroit on Saturday and Sunday.

Hip-hop artist yasiin bey is performing with her on the 25-city tour. Badu asked the revered Brooklyn emcee to join her because he was simply the right choice.

“There’s no other MC that I would come out with that can anoint the stage in the way I feel necessary this year than yasiin,” she said, “So, I convinced him to come out.”

In case you’re wondering, the tour name “Unfollow Me” acknowledges the “cancel culture” prevalent in today’s society. Still, it also carries a double meaning for Badu, who encourages individuals to unfollow her and pursue their life journeys.

Either way, concertgoers should expect a soulful and surrealist experience from one of our generation’s most accomplished R&B and Soul artists.

Erykah Badu ‘s Unfollow Me Tour with yasiin bey begins this weekend. The 25-city experience is set to hit most major cities including Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Detroit, and of course, her hometown of Dallas.

Ahead of the tour’s kick off, VIBE caught up with the neo-soul pioneer for a very chill Zoom chat to get some insight on the once-in-a-lifetime event. Tag-teaming with her Soulquarian brethren was an clear choice because she knew he could support her “in a really cool way, in a natural way.”

However, the phrase has a dual meaning for the singer.

“I also say unfollow me because I’m lost too,” adds the unapologetic free spirit. “We all on an individual journey, we’re finding our way. So following me wouldn’t really benefit you because you are on your journey. That’s your cup you’re drinking out, this is mine. And I want to encourage people to do that too, and it’s a reminder to myself.”

Without giving too much away, the show will be a bit of a mystery. Badu loves for fans “to feel tickled and surprised and whimsical and like they’re at a circus or something,” and she confessed they can expect the concert to be “a cosmic journey.”

The Unfollow Me Tour commences on Sunday, June 11 in San Antonio and will conclude on July 23 in Dallas.

When Fourth of July rolls around each year, one might think of family barbecues and fireworks. But what’s there to do for the other three days of the long weekend?

In Detroit, there’s a lot. From concerts to plays, poetry readings and fun at the park, here are a few happenings over the July 4 weekend.

Friday, June 30

Dot’s Home Live! Interactive Play at Andy Arts Center

Detroit Action, an organization dedicated to housing and economic justice, is hosting the interactive play, “Dot’s Home Live!” alongside Rise-Home Stories, PowerSwitch Action and Detroit-based theater company, A Host of People. The play is based on the mobile game, “Dot’s Home,” which focuses on the titular character as she navigates her grandmother’s choice to buy or sell her home in a neighborhood in Detroit and what that decision means for her and her family. There will be two performances: 7 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday at the Andy Arts Center, 3000 Fenkell Street.

Mic Check: Neo soul icon Erykah Badu celebrates career spanning over 25 years

Badu released her Grammy-winning debut album “Baduizm” in 1997.

Erykah Badu

It’s been nearly three decades since Erykah Badu came along and changed the sound of soul music with her 1997 debut album Baduizm .

The Dallas native blazed onto the scene with elegantly restrained vocals birthed in love, life and empowerment themes painted against a canvas of gorgeous and melodic jazz, soul and hip hop vibes.

I recently chatted with the high priestess of soul in the middle of her recent “Unfollow Me” tour, discussing her latest business venture, how she frames herself musically after nearly 30 years in the industry and more.

The following interview has been edited for clarity and length.

On the genesis and concept of the “Unfollow Me” tour:

Erykah Badu: The “Unfollow Me Tour” is a tongue in cheek way to invite my fans to the show. “Unfollow Me” is a Badu-ism for me. It should encourage you to follow your own path and bring forth your own gifts and own understanding. It’s jokey and a moment to reflect at the same time.

On her co-headlining tour with Yasiin Bey (the artist formerly known as Mos Def):

We have toured before. We have the same kind of energy and intent when performing. We are present in our performance and in our music as well. We share a sonic sound and a metronome. It feels natural, good and right.

On her affiliation with the loosely-based group of musical creatives known as the Soulquarians, who have been at the forefront of the progressive soul and conscious hip hop movements:

We’re still friends. We became friends because of musical similarities and because of our synergy sonically. Once you connect [with people] who vibrate in similar ways to you, it branches into other parts of your life. I have [familial] relationships with various [Soulquarian] members. Some of us lean on each other — being that shoulder for one another. Some of us send memes to make each other laugh, some of us only talk about music. Some of us are super competitive with one another in a brother or sister way. I’m so happy that those connections were made, even if there was never any music ever made. It’s a family.

Badu’s album remembrances through word association:

  • Worldwide Underground (2003) — Tour bus. We recorded the whole album on the tour bus. It was really a “worldwide underground.” Whoever wanted to get on the album in whatever city would get on it. Recording it was antics of the tour bus.
  • New Amerykah Part One and Two (2008, 2010 respectively) — Andre Harrell. I was at Electric Ladyland working on a body of music, about 30-40 songs, and I was trying to choose what goes where and pair it down to one album. Andre Harrell was there and said, “Why don’t you just make it part 1 and 2?”
  • Baduizm (1997) — Innocence. Youth. Possibility. Creative juices. All those things.
  • Mama’s Gun (2000) – Funk. Electric Lady Studio. Musicianship.

On her foray into the cannabis industry with the launch of her own line of products:

I always wanted to be part of the cannabis conversation and now I have this opportunity. I have a perfect partnership and released my first strain called “That Badu.” I took on the task of joining the cannabis conversation where women are concerned — women growers, users, doctors, spiritualists, scientists, dispensary owners, etc. — who use cannabis in their work. I’m happy to create products around this line that speaks to a woman’s needs.

On her consistent dialogue with women of color in her music:

I would say that your hair is fine, its beautiful. It’s yours. Not only is it beautiful, its antennae. It’s your source of connection with nature in its most natural form.

On where she sees herself in terms of her influence on music:

My best work is still inside of me. I’ve had fun and had the opportunity to create however I wanted to create, and stay in alignment with myself the whole time and not lose myself in the 25-year process. I find myself in the present.

On her personal mantra:

To each his own. That’s my philosophy. I don’t know what’s right for you. You don’t know what’s right for me. Leave other people’s b-tches alone. Unfollow me. I say it every morning.
